- 0:01There's a season many of us eventually reach when the more
- 0:06we experience life in leadership, the easier it
- 0:09becomes to drift away from who we really are.
- 0:13Not because we're trying to fake it, but because if we're not
- 0:17intentional, we drift. We start absorbing the
- 0:21expectations around us. We become shaped by momentum
- 0:26instead of meaning. We stay where we are or slowly
- 0:30slide into versions of ourselves that don't reflect who we're
- 0:34becoming. And that raises a different kind
- 0:38of question. How do we grow into a truer
- 0:41version of ourselves, even when we feel the pressure to let the
- 0:45world reshape us? How do we step into the next
- 0:50season of leadership and life in a way that adds depth without
- 0:55drifting into someone else's identity?
- 0:58That's where the whiskey world gives us a mirror.
- 1:02When a distiller tries to create something more unique and
- 1:05meaningful, they don't start over.
- 1:08They don't rewrite the recipe. They take what's already been
- 1:12aging, what's already true, and they give it a new experience.
- 1:18They move that whiskey into another barrel, one that
- 1:21previously held something like Sherry, port wine or rum, so the
- 1:26spirit can pick up new notes without losing the core of what
- 1:30it is. This is called cask finishing.
- 1:34And here's the really important part.
- 1:37Not every whiskey gets that treatment.
- 1:40Finishing is intentional. It's selective, a choice to add
- 1:45depth, not a default next step. A great finish brings out what's
- 1:52already inside the spirit. A heavy-handed one tries to turn
- 1:56it into something it was never meant to be.
- 2:00And we all feel that same tension.
- 2:03Some influences deepen US, revealing notes that had been
- 2:06within us all along. Others pull us off center, not
- 2:12because they're wrong, but because they're not ours.
- 2:17This episode is right between authenticity and adaptation,
- 2:22between who we've been and who we're becoming.
- 2:26It's about choosing the influences, environments, and
- 2:29voices that will help us grow into who we are, not less in
- 2:36whiskey and in leadership. The right cask doesn't change
- 2:41your identity, it reveals it. If what I said in the opening
- 2:51hit something in you, that subtle awareness that you've
- 2:54been shaped more by your expectations, environments and
- 2:58momentum than by your own intention, then welcome.
- 3:03You're in good company. This experience becomes almost
- 3:07universal as we move through life, especially as we approach
- 3:12midlife. It's not a crisis, but more of a
- 3:16turning point, a moment where questions shift from achievement
- 3:21to meaning. It's a season where we start
- 3:23asking what's next. What matters now is the future.
- 3:29I'm stepping into the 1 I actually want, and we begin to
- 3:36sense that the next chapter isn't about adding more, it's
- 3:40about becoming more true. And that's where the whiskey
- 3:44metaphor begins to help us frame what's happening inside of us.
- 3:50So let's talk about what cask finishing is, because the
- 3:54metaphor matters. A cask finish happens when a
- 3:58whiskey that's already matured is transferred into a second
- 4:02barrel. A barrel that previously held
- 4:05Sherry, port wine, rum, or some other spirit.
- 4:10What many people don't realize is that those barrels still hold
- 4:14traces of what came before. The wood is soaked with flavors,
- 4:19sugar, and remnants of its past life.
- 4:23And when the mature whiskey enters that second cask, it
- 4:27absorbs some of those leftover notes.
- 4:30Not enough to change its identity, but enough to deepen
- 4:34it. That's influence, and real
- 4:38influence always leaves a trace. Books, podcasts, mentors,
- 4:45leaders we admire, work environments, even the voices we
- 4:49scroll past daily. All of these soak into the wood
- 4:53that's around us, and without noticing, we absorb them.
- 5:00Some influences bring out who we are.
- 5:03Others bury pieces of us we didn't mean to lose.
- 5:08And that brings us to the first barrel, the place where
- 5:11everything begins. Every leader begins in a first
- 5:16barrel. Your wiring, your story, your
- 5:20faith, your early experiences, your values and convictions,
- 5:26your unique way of seeing the world.
- 5:30That first barrel gives you depth and identity.
- 5:34It's your foundation. It's the source of your
- 5:37leadership flavor. But the longer we lead and the
- 5:41longer we live, the more influences we encounter, both
- 5:46intentional and unintentional. Some come from people who speak
- 5:51into US, others come from the environments we simply drift
- 5:55into, and many come from expectations that we absorb
- 6:00without even realizing it. Influence is rarely loud.
- 6:06It's rarely dramatic. Dramatic.
- 6:09It's usually subtle and cumulative.
- 6:13If we're not intentional, we drift away from our center, not
- 6:18because something knocked us off track, but because we never
- 6:21chose the influences shaping us. Leadership has a current, and if
- 6:28we don't anchor ourselves, the current chooses our direction
- 6:31for us and for me. That realization came through
- 6:37what became my halftime moment. Everything changed when someone
- 6:43handed me a book called Halftime by Bob Buford.
- 6:48I didn't expect much from reading yet another book, but
- 6:51once I read it, it literally stopped me in my tracks.
- 6:56Bob wasn't talking about ambition.
- 6:59He was talking about purpose. Not about reinvention, but about
- 7:04alignment. He put language around attention
- 7:08that I had been carrying. Is what I'm doing still aligned
- 7:13with who I'm becoming? That book didn't ignite a
- 7:18crisis, but it did reveal a calling, and it reshaped my
- 7:23company. Ibrand Before reading halftime,
- 7:28ibrand was the place where I used my skills and experience to
- 7:31build strategy, strengthen brands, and solve tough
- 7:35marketing problems. But half time maybe realize
- 7:39something deeper. The real work wasn't in the
- 7:43marketing, it was in the alignment, the purpose, the
- 7:47clarity, the transformation that happens when a leader reconnects
- 7:52with who they truly are and leads their organization from
- 7:56that place. It moved ibrand from me being a
- 8:00fractional CMO and marketing strategist to being a clarity
- 8:05and alignment partner. One that helps leaders
- 8:09articulate their purpose, align their teams, build a strategy
- 8:14that reflects who they truly are as an organization and as
- 8:18individuals. And crafted clarity grew out of
- 8:23that same shift. Not reinvention, revelation.
- 8:29I was being poured into a new cask that brought forward notes
- 8:33that were already inside of me the whole time.
- 8:37And once I saw that, the metaphor of influence and
- 8:41identity became impossible to ignore.
- 8:46Some influences expand US and make us feel more grounded, more
- 8:51aligned, and more ourselves. A leader who speaks truth at the
- 8:57right moment. A conversation that helps us
- 9:00articulate something that we've been carrying.
- 9:04An experience that reveals a hidden strength or conviction.
- 9:08These influences don't rewrite us, but they do reveal us.
- 9:14These are the right casks, the ones that add depth without
- 9:18changing who we are, and they often arrive quietly, but their
- 9:24impact is unmistakable. But there are influences that
- 9:30leave us restless and settled and unanchored, not because
- 9:36they're bad influence, but because they're not ours.
- 9:40These influences keep us drifting, always searching for
- 9:44clarity instead of settling into purpose.
- 9:48They lead us to imitate instead of integrate, to react instead
- 9:53of discern, to perform instead of become.
- 9:59This is the danger of pouring into the wrong cask.
- 10:03It overwrites instead of enhances and discerning.
- 10:07The difference is where maturity begins.
- 10:12Distillers just don't find an empty cask and use it.
- 10:16They choose the cask, that next level of refinement, based on
- 10:21three things. The first is identity, strength.
- 10:26The whiskey has to be strong enough on its own to hold the
- 10:29influence of the second cast without being overwhelmed.
- 10:35They look for the complementary profile.
- 10:39The second cast has to match the character of the spirit, a
- 10:43relationship, not a randomness, and the third thing they look
- 10:48for is intentional expression. They know the story that they
- 10:53want the whiskey to tell before choosing the environment that
- 10:57will help them reveal it. Leaders move into new seasons in
- 11:03the same way. They seek clarity before
- 11:07influence, environments that complement, not compete, and
- 11:13purpose that guides the direction.
- 11:17Intentionality isn't optional, it's everything.
- 11:23And that leads us to an important question.
- 11:27Do we always need a second cask? Well, the answer is no.
- 11:34You don't always need a new cask.
- 11:38Some seasons are about resting in what was already revealed,
- 11:42letting depth develop, letting clarity settle.
- 11:47Jumping from influence to influence doesn't give us
- 11:49growth, it can actually keep us wandering.
- 11:54Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stay in the
- 11:57environment that is quietly shaping you instead of chasing
- 12:01the next one. Depth takes time and influence
- 12:07takes intention. So as we sit with all of that,
- 12:14let me ask you or let me leave you with a few tasting notes
- 12:20from this conversation. In whiskey, tasting notes
- 12:27capture the essence of the poor. Here are my tasting notes from
- 12:31today's conversation. The essential truth that you can
- 12:35take with you. Drift is subtle, So know the
- 12:41environment that you're aging in.
- 12:45Where you rest shapes you. And sometimes the most important
- 12:49work happens in the quiet, patient seasons before you're
- 12:53ready to move into a new cask. Identity comes before
- 13:00environment. Know your first barrel.
- 13:04It shapes everything. Your foundation shapes every
- 13:08season that follows, and when your core is steady, every new
- 13:13influence has a place to land without overwhelming who you
- 13:17really are. Choose influences that deepen,
- 13:24not distort. Your next cask should reveal
- 13:28you, not rewrite you. The right environments bring
- 13:32forward notes that were already inside of you, and the wrong
- 13:36ones pull you away from the flavor that you are always meant
- 13:39to carry. And the last tasting note is
- 13:44growth is refinement, not reinvention.
- 13:49You don't need a new self, you need the right conditions.
- 13:54True depth doesn't come from constant change, but from the
- 13:58intentional transformation. And when the timing is right,
- 14:03the next cask only enhances what maturity has already begun.
- 14:10The next season of your life doesn't require reinvention.
- 14:15It requires intention. The right influences the right
- 14:19environments, and the right tasks.
- 14:24In whiskey, in leadership, and in life, the right task won't
- 14:29change who you are. It reveals you.
- 14:34It deepens you. It brings forward what's been
- 14:37inside of you the whole time. Remember, clarity isn't found,
- 14:47it's crafted. Thanks for listening to Crafted
