- 0:19Hello everybody, and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:22We've reached episode 13, which is often unlucky for some,
- 0:27perhaps some on this on this podcast, but we'll find out why
- 0:32later on. I am thankfully joined by Owen
- 0:37and Dean. Welcome fellas.
- 0:39Let's go to Owen. How you doing dressed in green
- 0:42for Ireland? Yeah, doing well.
- 0:43It's a lovely sunny day here in Ireland.
- 0:46Actually, ever since I've got back, I haven't seen the rain
- 0:49once. It's been like 1819°.
- 0:53It's actually cold, but everyone else says it's warm and.
- 0:56But no, it's been really good. Yeah.
- 0:57And for context, it's Sunday morning in Ireland, isn't it, as
- 1:01we record now? Sunday morning, yeah.
- 1:03We've moved heaven and earth to be able to record together.
- 1:08So thanks everyone for your flexibility.
- 1:11Dean, welcome to you, Episode 13.
- 1:13Thanks mate. Doing well.
- 1:15Yeah, Sunday, early afternoon our time or early evening.
- 1:19So yeah, we've been, we've been pretty blessed as well, probably
- 1:23this last week. It's been what, mid to high 20s?
- 1:26And yeah, dry it's been, we've had a pretty nice stretch of
- 1:30weather. So it sounds like they're doing
- 1:32well, enjoying that. Yeah, it's it has been unreal
- 1:35this past week or so, hasn't it? You get that like nice warm mid
- 1:38afternoon and then the fresh mornings and evenings.
- 1:41I just seen a photo before of Connor Dylan.
- 1:45You know the guy we spoke about from Ballarat, He was at the the
- 1:48Fussy in Melbourne this weekend wearing a big massive puffer
- 1:51jacket, big thick wooly gloves and a big thick wooly hat.
- 1:55And like, I just got back from the beach and I was like, shit,
- 1:57we're so lucky with the weather in Perth here.
- 2:00Yeah, that's been cracking. I remember last year as well
- 2:02when I was living in Melbourne and it got cold probably around
- 2:06this time like May and I would see the weather come up on the
- 2:09news and whilst it was like freezing in Melbourne it would
- 2:12still be mid 20s in Perth and I was like getting dead angry.
- 2:16Like how do they have such good weather?
- 2:17Doesn't make sense. Thankfully now I'm the
- 2:22beneficiary of it. So let's get crack.
- 2:26And then there is a little bit of running news.
- 2:28I think there was a Diamond League in dower.
- 2:31I think that was potentially Friday for Australian time.
- 2:35Anyway, there was a men's hate 800 meters of which the guy who
- 2:41I recognize most in this field was Bryce Hochul, who's AUS
- 2:45based athlete and he seems to do a lot of training with Hobbs
- 2:49Kessler. I kind of think of them as a bit
- 2:51of a duo. I don't really know why, I think
- 2:52they've done quite a bit of stuff on YouTube together.
- 2:55Maybe they like qualified for the first Olympics together and
- 2:58stuff like this. So that was won by a Botswana
- 3:02guy Masala in 14311. Rice Hoffel was second in one
- 3:094326 and the guy in 3rd was Kenya Mal from Kenya in a
- 3:14133.37. So they are some very quick
- 3:19times for an invested commas this early in the season for
- 3:22those those fellas to be won running 140 threes.
- 3:26And I think they alluded to it with the commentators did anyway
- 3:29about Bryce Hochul. They were saying he kind of
- 3:32hasn't really got a season going yet and they didn't know what to
- 3:35expect from him. So this was, I wouldn't
- 3:38necessarily say a breakthrough run, but he'll be looking to
- 3:42build on the back of this. And the commentators did
- 3:44actually say there was a $5000 prize bonus for if you break the
- 3:51meat record. Can't remember if, I don't think
- 3:54this one quite broke the meat record, but in the, in one of
- 3:58the women's races, where are we? It was, I think it was in the 8
- 4:02hundreds as well. Must have been the 1500s.
- 4:05In fact, the girl tied the meat record time and she was waiting
- 4:09for them to announce it because, you know, sometimes it gets
- 4:11rounded down by like 100th of a second or whatever.
- 4:15And then they announced it that she'd tied it and you see, you
- 4:18know, like give a little celebration.
- 4:19So she's buzzing with the bonus. It's it's tough to to get a meet
- 4:25record though, like because Diamond leagues, there's been of
- 4:28so many of them. I was wondering like does it
- 4:31relate solely to our Diamond League or would it be the
- 4:33entirety of Diamond League? Hopefully it's for each one.
- 4:36I mean it's a nice incentive but like you said the times are are
- 4:40fast. I think I was watching the
- 4:41commentary and they mentioned, but I've been going for because
- 4:44guitar was Doha was one of the first Diamond Leagues.
- 4:47Wasn't it's where it all began. I think they said.
- 4:50And was it was it 15 years ago maybe?
- 4:52Or there was some sort of there's A5 in the the reference
- 4:55to how long Diamond League had been around.
- 4:57But it's sort of it sounded like the birth of the Diamond League
- 5:00was yeah, was was in Doha, which is cool.
- 5:03And they've managed to to keep it going.
- 5:05Sort of we sort of just take it for granted that it's like the
- 5:07premier sort of series of athletics events across the
- 5:12year. But yeah, it obviously started
- 5:14somewhere and started there, which like you say, they're just
- 5:17super fast, which is good. It's sort of a nice contrast to
- 5:20the the races that we've just watched, you know, where they're
- 5:24all sort of big prize money and sort of sitting kick races.
- 5:27Whereas these are all well paced races and sort of the pacing of
- 5:31them sort of sets them up to run fast, albeit.
- 5:35Sorry, Ron. Oh, I was just going to say it's
- 5:36like what, 33° I think they were saying as well.
- 5:39So pretty hot, which would which made it difficult.
- 5:42I would imagine maybe 8-15 hundred meters is maybe be the
- 5:45cut off and then it would have been hard to run mate records
- 5:48when it's 33°. Yeah, I think you've seen that
- 5:51with the the 5K they those 3 paces and wave lights and within
- 5:57200 meters the paces and the wave lights that separate from
- 6:00the the main pack, they were just like now you just go and do
- 6:03your pace job and hopefully hit your splits.
- 6:05But we're not going with you and we'll just race each other back
- 6:07here. We'll get to that result in a
- 6:10minute. But have you with you saying
- 6:12that the the Diamond League started there maybe 1015 years
- 6:15ago? Have you ever been to Doha?
- 6:18Only, like for X many hours between layovers, you know,
- 6:22like, we went out very shortly, yeah.
- 6:25The the airports good, isn't it? It's correct.
- 6:27Yeah. Their business land is lovely.
- 6:29We actually went there a few years ago because I mean, it
- 6:33seems like one of those countries where they're a bit
- 6:35like Saudi. They're just getting as many
- 6:38sporting events as they can to kind of give it a good
- 6:40reputation, I guess without going into the politics too
- 6:43much. But if Diamond League's been
- 6:46there for that long, it must have been like almost one of the
- 6:48May May, one of the first sporting events that they got
- 6:52there, I guess. So I actually visited Dover the
- 6:55other year because not for the World Cup, but the F1.
- 6:59And my experience was that it's like this massive built up city,
- 7:04like similar to Dubai, but it just feels empty, like there's
- 7:08nobody there. So maybe over the next 10 or 15
- 7:11years, they'll become more commercialized, I guess, and
- 7:15people will visit more and tourism will take off and stuff
- 7:18like that. People maybe will emigrate there
- 7:20the way that they do to Dubai. But it just felt a bit dead when
- 7:23I was there. So God knows how it felt for
- 7:26some of these athletes going there like 10 years ago.
- 7:28Yeah, I would imagine it's sort of built a lot since then,
- 7:30particularly with the. They do very well with possible
- 7:34being pretty strong. Well yeah, you might see some
- 7:36more US based tourism there recently with old mate Trump's
- 7:40been buying some jets from them isn't he?
- 7:44To the 5K that we touched on. Then the men's 5K was taken out
- 7:48by Reynold Cherieth. Who, as per the commentators, I
- 7:52think he's 19 years old and it was only his second ever 5K.
- 7:56In second place was Dominic Lebarlu, who's now representing
- 8:00Switzerland, but I think the other year he ran on the Olympic
- 8:03refugee team. He's on athlete.
- 8:06So that just that was the winning time was 1316, Lebarlu
- 8:10second in 1317 and Beranu Belu also 1317.
- 8:16So that looks like it was a dead heat 1317.7 for those two.
- 8:21So I actually see in this race, it was, as I touched on before,
- 8:27slow from the start and it didn't really get going until
- 8:31maybe the last K or so. And the commentators were
- 8:34pointing out that there was various like 1500 meter
- 8:37specialists in here who this was going to suit.
- 8:39And they were going to see like kind of who had the strongest
- 8:41finish. And there was actually Cooper T
- 8:44who was in the field who's been running at the the Grand Slam
- 8:47meets already this season. So he's potentially a bit sharp
- 8:50than some of the others, but rather than that work to his
- 8:54benefit, I think it was more so a hindrance because he looked
- 8:57tired. And as soon as the pace did get
- 9:00going, although it was slow, he just wasn't able to move with
- 9:03it. And a pack of like 8910 moved
- 9:06forward and could say it was like one of two or three maybe
- 9:10that just went off the back and couldn't go with it.
- 9:13So wasn't a successful run for him.
- 9:15But yeah, the last lap was a bit ferocious in this chariot.
- 9:19He absolutely took off down the final 100 meters straight.
- 9:23Like, you know how fast some of these guys can finish in a 5K
- 9:27race in that last 400 meters anyway.
- 9:29And then to see this fella put like what what looked like 5 or
- 9:3310 meters into the others over the last 50 meters, it's just
- 9:37like, Jesus Christ, that is like a deadly kick.
- 9:40Yeah, it's pretty. They just never went with the
- 9:42places to begin with. They they sort of had three
- 9:44pacemakers set it going at meet record pace, which was I think
- 9:47like 1251 and just no one went with it, which, yeah, I mean, 13
- 9:53teens is not slow. But like you say, it's sort of a
- 9:56different, you know, 2 seconds of lap.
- 9:58It's quite a bit. But yeah, it's still made for it
- 10:01was still a good race, wasn't it?
- 10:03No, no $5000 bonus for them fellas.
- 10:06But I'm sure that maybe it was a collective agreement before the
- 10:09start even like pacemakers, like thanks for putting your hand up,
- 10:14but you aren't really going to be required from us tonight.
- 10:16Do as a guy. Yeah, normally like one person
- 10:19goes with the pace, don't they? Normally you see like one sort
- 10:22of have a bit of a go, but yeah, the whole group, I think
- 10:24everyone sort of because wasn't the the steeplechaser in there
- 10:29as well? The Ethiopian steeplechaser, I
- 10:32think he was in there sort of he took sort of some of the pace
- 10:35early. But yeah, but no one was really
- 10:38sort of wanting to take up the racing just because I think it's
- 10:40just pretty hot and like you say, early in the season, you
- 10:43know, I'm sort of back in their fitness in so.
- 10:46But yeah, still, still a good race.
- 10:48There was that Indian guy Gulvey.
- 10:51He tried to close the gap at one point.
- 10:53Didn't he? Yeah, it lasted about what, 600
- 10:56meters maybe, if that. And he, yeah, he closed by about
- 10:595 meters. He hardly got got off the front
- 11:01of the pack really, did he? Yeah, that's must have been a
- 11:05tough back off of the race after that little injection from him
- 11:09mentally as much as physically because you just be thinking, oh
- 11:12fuck the air when the group comes swallows you back off like
- 11:15a lap later. From a distance perspective,
- 11:18that was always the men's results.
- 11:20Then from the women's results, there was 1500 meters won by
- 11:25Nelly chef chair from Kenya in four O 5 flat.
- 11:30Another Kenyan athlete second did your rate in 406.27 and the
- 11:35British girl, I didn't actually see this race because now I've
- 11:37just seen that Gemma Riki was there that would have I would
- 11:40have noticed that, but she was third in four O 7.33.
- 11:44I don't know exactly how those times correlate to the world
- 11:49championship standard is are they any close to the Tokyo
- 11:53qualifier there? So the women's standard for the
- 11:561500 meters is 4 O 150. So they're yeah, they're a good
- 12:03456 seconds off it. Yeah.
- 12:05So I think that concludes the results from the Doha Diamond
- 12:08League. We do have the Manchester 10K,
- 12:14which is unfortunately has not happened as of time of
- 12:17recording. It's going to be in a couple of
- 12:19hours. And I know that Brett Robinson
- 12:22as well as I think Izzy Bat, Doyle and potentially, well,
- 12:26obviously lots of others, but they're the two that springs to
- 12:29mind. They're going to be running
- 12:30there. So we'll be keeping a keen eye
- 12:32on that. Is there anyone else there that
- 12:34you guys know of? No, I just know those two.
- 12:36I did hear Brett saying that he his goal will be to try and run
- 12:39a PB or well definitely run a PB and break 28 minutes for the
- 12:44first time. I think maybe he said 2808 or
- 12:47something. 2812 is his current PB so I wonder if he's has even
- 12:53a fleeting thought about taking that 10K record that Sam
- 12:57Clifford just ran the other week.
- 12:58I mean, it's a, it's a big gap. Based on that.
- 13:01Isn't it? Yeah, yeah.
- 13:02Yeah, you wouldn't think so, but if he runs under 28 you'd have
- 13:07to be pretty happy, wouldn't you?
- 13:08Given how he about ran in Maragami and sort of been a bit
- 13:12interrupted since then. It seems like he's done some
- 13:15good training since he pulled out of London.
- 13:19Yeah, since he's pulled out the race and then his pacing job
- 13:22seems to go pretty well, so it's definitely heading in the right
- 13:25direction again. Be interesting to see what you
- 13:28can put down. And then you think maybe easy,
- 13:31do you think easy maybe shoots for is it the auto standard?
- 13:34Is it 3030 or 30? I think 3030 isn't it for Tokyo.
- 13:39I assume that. 3020. 3020 OK, you're shivers.
- 13:43Oh, that's fast. Yeah, and well, equally, the
- 13:47men's time is 27 flat, so it's just ridiculous standards,
- 13:50aren't they? But yeah, what did is he run in
- 13:52Japan the other week 3030? What do you think, 3044?
- 13:5644, yeah. So it might be a bit, a bit too
- 13:59big of a gap to bridge. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:02Be interesting to see if she can back it up and do it in
- 14:05Manchester because she's only travelled.
- 14:09When did she got there? Last week maybe.
- 14:10So potentially still a little bit getting over it, but no
- 14:14better way to get out of your system than to smack a 10K.
- 14:18So there was also another meet in Tokyo, in Japan, the Seiko
- 14:22Golden Grand Prix, and there were a few Australians in
- 14:26action. I'm just trying to the safer the
- 14:28results now because I think it might because it's only just
- 14:31happened. But they're they're coming up
- 14:33largely in Japanese. But I've got the Rose.
- 14:36Davis won the women's 3K in 843, which is pretty damn fast from a
- 14:42Kenyan athlete called Helen Laboon.
- 14:46And then the Japanese athlete inferred and the rest of the
- 14:49field was Japanese. To be fair, there was a men's 3K
- 14:54which was also won by Australian in Jude Thomas in 739 and the
- 14:58Ethiopian athlete in second Gamma in 740 and Irish athlete
- 15:04Brian Faye in 3rd 741. So we've seen a clip of the end
- 15:09of that, both of those, the men's and the women's three KS
- 15:11actually, and it seemed like Rose Davis had it wrapped up
- 15:15before the kind of finishing straight.
- 15:18She looked like she was by herself a little bit.
- 15:20But Jude Thomas came into the last hundred with a couple of
- 15:22guys and he was just strong enough to extend away from them.
- 15:26So what was the he ran something the other week and it was
- 15:30Diamond League, wasn't it in China perhaps, And we were
- 15:32saying it wasn't his greatest run.
- 15:34So I'm good to see him back on track there.
- 15:36There was also a women's 1500 which again was won by an
- 15:41Australian in Georgia Griffith in four O 1.1, which if we refer
- 15:45back to the entry standards for Tokyo, she's she's nailed it by
- 15:504/10 of a second. I'm not sure whether she already
- 15:52had it or not, but that's an an outstanding run because she's
- 15:56won by 5 seconds to a Japanese athlete in second and then Sarah
- 16:01Billings in 3rd in four O 6. And we know kind of what sort of
- 16:06form and shape that Sarah's in at the minute based on a 800 the
- 16:09other week. So outstanding room from Georgia
- 16:12there. Cool to see Aussies winning
- 16:14abroad and everyone sort of peaking for nationals.
- 16:17You're sort of carrying that forward, that form forward, are
- 16:20you? Yeah, it's, it's so good that
- 16:22Australians are able to go over to Japan and race so often
- 16:25because it seems like there's almost a bit of a brother and
- 16:28sister relationship going on between the two countries in
- 16:31terms of athletics, with all the Japanese guys coming over
- 16:35seemingly for the Launceston half Marathon.
- 16:38And they go, they go to Gold Coast as well, a few of them,
- 16:41don't they? Yeah, Yeah.
- 16:42It's a big Japanese contingent that come over for those races.
- 16:47And I think it times well, the Gold Coast Marathon Festival
- 16:51being in July when it's pretty grossly hot in Tokyo.
- 16:56So it's sort of whereas it's our middle of our winter, it's sort
- 16:58of times well similar and even for Launceston like Launceston's
- 17:02cracking weather and it's just as it's starting to heat up in
- 17:05in Japan, so. Yeah, it's literally flip of
- 17:07what we would do and train through summer and then go to
- 17:11Fukuoku or Osaka to benefit from the the cold.
- 17:13Well and marigami like we did, but they just do it their way
- 17:16and come to Australia when it's cold.
- 17:19Yeah. So that rounds us off with the
- 17:20results then. So I think we'll get into
- 17:22training weeks and what's been going on and then the lives of
- 17:26Ryan, Owen and Dean. I think we best start with Dean
- 17:30because you definitely have had the strongest week from a
- 17:33running perspective. So do you want to take us away?
- 17:35Yeah, sure. So Monday just my 2 sort of easy
- 17:41runs to and from work. Tuesday I ran easy into the
- 17:47office and then ran to to the track.
- 17:50So this is my first track session back and we had the
- 17:54session of a four lap build into and then a jog lap and then it
- 18:00was 4 or 5 by 8. The reps the IT was 800 meters
- 18:06at VO2 with a 62nd rest and then like a hard 400, so quicker than
- 18:11your 800 metre pace and then two minutes before your next set
- 18:15static recovery. So you guys might remember
- 18:18because we sort of at front runner just cycle through
- 18:20similar workouts, you know, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
- 18:23So yeah, so I just remembered the four lap build.
- 18:25I think we went from 70 sixes down to 70 seconds.
- 18:30So yeah, 7670470270 and that didn't feel too bad.
- 18:36My ITB on my left leg was still a bit sore, but otherwise I
- 18:41think my legs were sort of starting to feel reasonably
- 18:43decent, like post the marathon. And then they felt the more in
- 18:47the eight hundreds and we're sort of hitting about 2:16 for
- 18:51the 8 hundreds and then about 64 seconds for the four hundreds.
- 18:58But yeah, because we hadn't, I don't know how many weeks it's
- 19:00been since I've done a full like a proper track session.
- 19:03It could be like maybe 5 weeks perhaps.
- 19:06I did struggle a bit. So I got through 4 reps I nearly
- 19:10stopped at one point because my leg was pretty sore.
- 19:12But but yeah, I managed to get through it.
- 19:14Was puffing and panting by the end of it.
- 19:17Did four sets. And yeah, found it recently
- 19:19difficult just because we haven't done some for a while.
- 19:21But yeah, happy I got ticked off the session.
- 19:24Yeah, you'll feel so much better for doing that when you come to
- 19:27this week's session now. It's almost like literally just
- 19:30the first one, isn't it? Yeah, the first, Yeah, exactly.
- 19:34Yeah, you forget. Yeah, those higher intensity
- 19:37sessions you haven't done, We haven't done much at that
- 19:39intensity for a while. So it takes a bit of getting
- 19:41used to again, but. So I'm guessing you spent 0
- 19:45seconds on the front of any of those reps or did you lead any?
- 19:48Yeah, exactly. I just sat in there was a good
- 19:50group, the sort of the Toms were there and gosh, we had quite a
- 19:55few at different at different times.
- 19:57But yeah, I didn't take it to Max was there who's who's sort
- 20:01of recently joined our group who I think he's run like 14 flat or
- 20:05thereabouts for 5K. So he took a few reps.
- 20:09Yeah, it's a good, good mix of us, Kieran and and others.
- 20:12So, Oh yeah, I didn't take a turn.
- 20:14I just ticked it off, particularly in the four
- 20:15hundreds. I sort of, yeah, I was not keen
- 20:18to sort of push any of that. Yeah, very wise.
- 20:20And then Wednesday ref sort of said if I can try and make my
- 20:24second run closer to 60 minutes and 40 minutes.
- 20:29So I ran 40 minutes, burst up, and then I've tried to do 60
- 20:32minutes. I think I maybe ran just under
- 20:34it in the afternoon I was feeling a bit tired but
- 20:37otherwise legs felt okay. Yeah, you weren't too smashed
- 20:40off. No, not terrible.
- 20:42No, to be honest, like I expected to feel worse than what
- 20:44I did, which is good. Then Thursday I had three in the
- 20:50morning, I sort of ran to Lake Munga SO5KS or so.
- 20:54And then I did 3 by 8 minutes at a heart rate of around aiming
- 20:58for like 165 the minute jog in between.
- 21:02And then and that was sort of like the sub threshold more
- 21:07morning session and then went to work and then like jogged to the
- 21:10office and then that afternoon did the regular threshold
- 21:14session. So it's sort of the first time
- 21:15I've attempted, like to call it, say, threshold sessions in a
- 21:18day. And so we had, yeah.
- 21:20So I jogged back to Manga for more laps and we had 6 by 30
- 21:25seconds on off, 2 by 6 minutes at threshold, and then 6
- 21:29minutes, you know, 6 minutes of those 30 seconds on off.
- 21:32So yeah, my legs felt like tired in that second threshold
- 21:35workout. Like they just felt, yeah, just
- 21:39like they've had the, like they just felt a bit fatigued, you
- 21:41know, like you're a bit fatigued.
- 21:43But aerobically everything felt fine.
- 21:45And again, I sort of sat in for most of it, the Tomswood setting
- 21:48tempo, which was nice, apart from the threshold.
- 21:51I think the threshold pace they wanted to hit was a bit slower
- 21:53than they were hitting 315 and Max and I wanted to hit around
- 21:583:10. So we're a bit ahead on the six
- 22:00minute reps, but then they, the other guys caught back up when
- 22:03we're doing the set 30 seconds on off.
- 22:05But yeah, got through that by the time I jogged home, I think
- 22:09it was like 36 KS for the day. So that was a big day, yeah.
- 22:13And the first time I've sort of attempted 2 sort of threshold
- 22:15sessions in a day, which I don't know, I've seemingly survived
- 22:19until now at least. So and then Saturday.
- 22:23Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Did you on Tuesday?
- 22:27Did you jog to the office in the morning?
- 22:30Yeah. Did you say shit?
- 22:31So that's a double on Tuesday into well trying to do 100
- 22:36minutes on Wednesday into double threshold Thursday.
- 22:39That's are you feeling tired on Friday, off that or?
- 22:42Yeah, that's all right. And Dean, on that Thursday, like
- 22:50in the future, ideally, would you like to take your lactates
- 22:53or? Yeah, yeah, I got some more
- 22:57strips from home, gave them to wrap on Saturday.
- 23:00So I think he said, all being well, he'll join us on the bike
- 23:03on Thursday and do some testing. Yeah.
- 23:05So try and get a bit dotted. That was particularly like crazy
- 23:09the Thursday. I think it was intentionally
- 23:10like, like for example, say the heart rate, if I'm running a
- 23:14marathon effort, I'll sit my heart rate like low one 70s.
- 23:19Whereas these reps were like, I think I averaged like 164 or
- 23:22something, you know, so like 10 beats sort of below marathon
- 23:26effort. I think.
- 23:26I think I averaged like maybe 325 to 327 pace for the for the
- 23:318 minutes in the morning. So they felt very aerobic, very
- 23:35controlled, like not much harder than sort of steady pace really,
- 23:40which I think was important as so as to not, you know, wreck
- 23:44myself, which was fun, to be honest.
- 23:47It was a cracking morning, Thursday morning and doing and
- 23:50doing work at that. Yeah.
- 23:51You just feel more fatigued than.
- 23:54And even on the Thursday night, I was conscious not to go too
- 23:57hard. So, yeah, so sort of it's more
- 24:00just the aggregate of work rather than the intensity, which
- 24:03I think I prefer. I think it's far less risky, I
- 24:06think for me when I'm overreaching, particularly in
- 24:09those Thursday sessions and Saturday sessions, you know,
- 24:12rather than just backing them off a bit and running them at a
- 24:15slightly lower intensity and doing more of it.
- 24:18I think I get fitter than if I'm just rinsing myself.
- 24:21Like happy to do it once a week on a Tuesday when the intervals
- 24:25are short. But yeah, so we'll, we'll see
- 24:27how this goes, but I think this all going well might be a might
- 24:31be a thing going forward. Betty that felt good rolling
- 24:33into work with the with the session in the bag.
- 24:36Yeah. Well, yeah, kind of.
- 24:38Yeah, a lot of time, but. You also know there's still a
- 24:41session to come. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:45I think I'll be happy once I've, if I've, if I've done a few,
- 24:48I'll I'll feel better. Like once it sort of becomes a
- 24:50bit, you know, of a regular thing, I'll be happy.
- 24:53But yeah, I certainly felt on Friday, I felt legs felt a bit
- 24:56tired, sort of just two easy 40 minute runs.
- 24:59But they felt you could feel yesterday and even Saturday
- 25:02morning, like I ran that a bit easier.
- 25:06It was a 30 minute Gilly tempo around Kings Park and then the
- 25:09three by 20 seconds sort of accelerations uphill up the
- 25:14green mile and then 40 seconds down, 40 seconds up the green
- 25:18mile, 80 seconds down. And that 30 minute tempo, I,
- 25:23yeah, I sort of didn't go too hard on that.
- 25:26And I didn't feel like I, I had a heat, to be honest.
- 25:28Like I was just tired. I got it done.
- 25:31You know, it was sort of a big, big week or a fairly big week.
- 25:34And then today I had 30 minutes easy, 60 minutes steady, 15
- 25:37minutes easy. Which, yeah, I've just done a
- 25:41few hours ago. What does that come out as
- 25:43distance wise? Just over 160 KS, yeah.
- 25:47For the for today as well though the Sunday.
- 25:50Run. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:51It was like 134 going into today, I think.
- 25:55So nice 26 this morning. Yeah, very good.
- 25:58Well, I'm keen to see how you get on with this double
- 26:00threshold stuff because it's, it's, it's got the the FOMO
- 26:04juices pumping for sure. Yeah, look, I'll either be fit
- 26:08or injured or the other. There's there's no more room in
- 26:13the injured club, mate. Yeah, look fun.
- 26:19Fun to try though. I've really enjoyed it so
- 26:21hopefully it's hopefully it can become a regular thing like I
- 26:25did enjoy it from just doing 2 easy jobs on a Wednesday rather
- 26:28than a steady run and doing this is something different on a
- 26:31Thursday morning was fun. Would you in the future when you
- 26:34say about doing the lactate as well, would you measure both
- 26:37sessions? Ideally, yeah, yeah.
- 26:40Because I think the tendency, in particular on the Thursday night
- 26:42when there's a group is, you know, everyone sort of can get
- 26:45carried away a little bit. So it would be good to measure
- 26:49them to make sure we sort of know what is the upper limit.
- 26:52It's probably even more so on the Thursday night because
- 26:55that's when we tend to go too fast, if anything.
- 26:58Whereas the Thursday morning at the minute, the way it's been
- 27:00prescribed is very conservative. So the problem is my lactate
- 27:05might be a bit low and might have to go harder on a Thursday
- 27:08morning, but we'll see. Have you, you, I guess you
- 27:10probably haven't had time yet, but it might be interesting to
- 27:12look back on this week and kind of work out how much intensity
- 27:16you've done in terms of minutes versus like a typical 160 K
- 27:21week, like whether you actually got more from it that way.
- 27:24Yeah, definitely. I mean, yeah, I mean, it's
- 27:26probably just yeah, like even like say Thursday was like an
- 27:29hour of, you know, of intervals. Like that's a lot like an hour
- 27:34of because it's 3028 minutes in the morning and 28 minutes now,
- 27:3726 minutes in the morning and 28 minutes in the afternoon.
- 27:40It was a lot. And then 40 minutes on Saturday
- 27:42and maybe 15 to 20 minutes on Tuesday.
- 27:45It's quite a bit. And then an hour of Zone 2
- 27:47stuff. It's like it's a lot for the for
- 27:49a week. Do you do any static stretching
- 27:51and stuff at home or not? No, I should probably need to.
- 27:55When I do my gym routine, I find like everything gets really
- 27:58activated. Like if I'm good with that, you
- 27:59know, like I have like a 20 minute gym routine.
- 28:02If I'm good with that, everything feels pretty, pretty
- 28:05good. So as long as I do that a few
- 28:07times a week, not that I have the last few weeks, then I
- 28:09always find yeah, my ability wise feel not too bad.
- 28:13Sort of incorporate some movements.
- 28:15Flick that through to me. Yeah, I'll send.
- 28:18I'll send. Yeah, I'll send.
- 28:20It's from RAF, so I'll send it to him.
- 28:22RAF. OK.
- 28:23But yeah, yeah, it's pretty good.
- 28:24Yeah, good week, good week. Things are on the up.
- 28:27So that's one week of like not much, just recovery.
- 28:31Then last week was the kind of first week trying some normal
- 28:35training again. And then this week is like a
- 28:37full normal week. So I think, yeah, you're pretty
- 28:40much back in the flow now, aren't you?
- 28:42Yeah, all been well. Touch wood.
- 28:43And no eyes, no thoughts around HBF next weekend.
- 28:50No, I think maybe, maybe we'll see.
- 28:55We'll see. See how this started, see how
- 28:57the first half of this week goes.
- 28:59Is it? Is it sold out?
- 29:00It's. Sold out?
- 29:01Yeah, but I don't know. Yeah, maybe see if I can sneak
- 29:05in, but we'll see. Do you have a, do you have a
- 29:07history there? Have you won it a couple of
- 29:10times? I finished second a few times I
- 29:12think, but I've never raced the half.
- 29:15I sort of, for whatever reason, I've always had other goals in
- 29:18and around that time, at least the past few years anyway.
- 29:21Raced it last year but other than that I don't think I'd
- 29:24raced it for the past few years. Finished second last year.
- 29:27Yeah, to who? Luke, it's always hard that 12
- 29:32K, you're sort of running into a, you're running into the half
- 29:35marathon field. So you're just zigging and
- 29:38zagging your way through through that would be nice if they
- 29:40somehow separated the back half of that.
- 29:42They've got so much freeway and road, like they close a heap of
- 29:45roads. You could sort of just funnel
- 29:48people and split them because it just gets really messy to be
- 29:52honest. It's not super fun.
- 29:54I was gutted at first when I made my travel arrangements to
- 29:58fly on Friday, knowing that I would be missing the run on
- 30:02Sunday, but obviously with how it's turned out I wouldn't have
- 30:05been doing it anyway, so that kind of softens the blow a
- 30:07little bit. Yeah, it's a good, it's a good
- 30:10event. I'd love to do the half, to be
- 30:11honest. I think the half can be is quite
- 30:13fast and a nice course and you get the first thing in the
- 30:17morning, you know, you're running into as it's daylight
- 30:19and beautiful time of year. You know, as we're talking about
- 30:22that seasonal change, like it's absolutely cracking.
- 30:25So yeah, good one to do. OK, watch this space then.
- 30:29And how about yourself, Ryan? How's your your your week?
- 30:32Yeah, myself was interesting. So I guess started the week with
- 30:38still waiting for these MRI results and kind of not really
- 30:43knowing where I was at, but the the pain was manageable enough
- 30:46to to run here and there. So I thought I'm just going to
- 30:49keep jogging until these results come through and see what's what
- 30:53then. So I think on Monday night I
- 30:55just done half an hour and then on Tuesday I got home from work
- 30:59and I had every intention of going to track and then just
- 31:04couldn't motivate myself to get there.
- 31:05And I was like, oh, I'm still waiting for these results.
- 31:07Like although the pain feels like it's OK now to go and do a
- 31:11session. Like there's literally no point
- 31:13if don't know something comes back and then it tells me like
- 31:16you can't run or whatever could potentially just be making
- 31:18something worse. So I thought, OK, I'll just hold
- 31:21on. And then I think Wednesday maybe
- 31:25I got them back and I'll read out what it says because it's
- 31:30quite scientific. But then there is a conclusion
- 31:33at the end. So it says abnormal signal
- 31:35intensity seen affecting the medial insertional part of
- 31:39plantar fascia in the form of, I won't go on with that, mild
- 31:44plantar fascia thickening 5 to 6 mills, which is seen in fuse
- 31:48form and involves the proximal portion and extends to the
- 31:51calcaneal insertion. Conclusion findings are
- 31:55suggestive of an insertional plantar fasciitis for clinical
- 31:59correlation. I mean, in summary, it's
- 32:01planter, which is like kind of what I already knew or at least
- 32:05already thought. But I guess it's nice to just
- 32:08see it in black and white and be like, OK, like you can't really
- 32:11ignore that now. Just actually address it
- 32:14properly. I mean the annoying thing is
- 32:16I've tried to address it properly by getting that
- 32:19shockwave treatment. When was that?
- 32:22Probably like 2 months ago but seemingly didn't do anything.
- 32:25Maybe that's just because I was still clinging on to training
- 32:28and trying to do some sessions and around it so I need to
- 32:33follow up with the physio to get like a rehab plan and stuff.
- 32:37But from my own research, it seems like if you've kind of
- 32:40exhausted the shockwave therapy and it's been ongoing for a
- 32:45number of months, which it has since November really, but
- 32:49gradually got worse, then the only thing to do is to give it a
- 32:52prolonged D load. I think I have spoke to the
- 32:56physio through RAF and he's saying potentially he doesn't
- 33:00think the results are that bad, but I'll have to see what he
- 33:04says. Because in my mind I'm just
- 33:06like, I'd rather just press the hard reset button now and get it
- 33:09over and done with. So that I know fully in two to
- 33:12four weeks, wherever it may be, it'll be resolved and hopefully
- 33:16won't be coming back. Rather than like trying to run
- 33:19here and there and seeing how it goes.
- 33:21And then I'm just reached the point where I'm like, whenever,
- 33:24let's just bury it properly. Do you find I'm certain shoes
- 33:28aggravate it more than others or no?
- 33:31Yeah, when I wear my brogues for the office, they're awful
- 33:34because it's just like that concrete block directly under
- 33:37your heel, isn't it? And then like the the wrap
- 33:40around support at the back is nothing but like a thin piece of
- 33:43leather. So maybe I'll have to get a
- 33:45doctor's note and start coming into work in a pair of carbon
- 33:48plated shoes, some foam on them. That's one way to tell the
- 33:53office you run, isn't it? But in terms of running shoes, I
- 34:01can't, I haven't really been able to put my finger on it, I
- 34:03don't think, because it's just seems to be on and off, on and
- 34:07off. So I don't know.
- 34:08Because yeah, well, it seems to be how it is at the minute is I
- 34:12can run, let's say today I'll run today it's fine.
- 34:15Then tomorrow it'll be sore so I don't run.
- 34:18And then the day after the pain kind of goes away to the point
- 34:21where I'm able to run again. But that's just not going to be
- 34:24able to like be beneficial going forwards like long term.
- 34:28It's just like the recovery period is too is too long and
- 34:32it's not allowing that planter to actually get rid of all the
- 34:36inflammation and stuff because it's just constantly loading it.
- 34:40So that's why is that. Where your mind croaks us.
- 34:43Yeah, I think he keeps talking. It's what he keeps talking
- 34:45about. And he is also talking about his
- 34:47Achilles, which I've been keeping an eye on.
- 34:50It doesn't hair, but the whole area just generally seems to be.
- 34:54It's not massively swollen, but it's just inflamed.
- 34:56It's angry. So I think the there's something
- 35:00in the planter that is like causing the Achilles a bit of
- 35:03discomfort, or maybe the Achilles has to work more
- 35:05because the planter can't. So I just don't really want to
- 35:09take any risks with it in trying to like run through it because
- 35:12I'm just fed up with trying to manage it.
- 35:15And what shoes? What shoes do you wear in your
- 35:18like daily running? So I've got a pair of New
- 35:22Balance eight 80s, which, and now they seem all right.
- 35:26Oh my, the jogging shoes. Now I've always wore the
- 35:30Invincibles, which they didn't sell anymore.
- 35:34Are you thinking something a bit stiffer, Owen?
- 35:36What would you? I think it's to do with like the
- 35:38heel to toe drop and like the larger heel to toe drop offloads
- 35:44the pressure, yeah, on your calf or something like that.
- 35:47I'm not too sure. That's why people put in like
- 35:49heel pitches and stuff don't. They Yeah, yeah.
- 35:52Umm. But like if it's angry at the
- 35:55moment, it might just need time and but like, that's what I
- 35:59think that's yeah, the heel to toe drop.
- 36:01You need like a bigger heel to toe drop which could be worth a
- 36:03go. Yeah, I think those healing sets
- 36:06are one of the go TOS, like to try and help it, as well as a
- 36:11shit ton of cough strengthening, which is the tough part.
- 36:15But well, it's not tough. It's tough like to motivate
- 36:18yourself to do those exercises. But when you're injured, it's
- 36:21not, is it? Like when you're injured, then
- 36:23you have a rehab plan and you know that that's what you need
- 36:25to do to get better. It's easy to do it.
- 36:27It's hard to do it when when you're not injured and to like
- 36:30kind of keep it, keep on top of it.
- 36:33But hopefully this is the lesson to say we need to just embed an
- 36:36actual strength routine, even if it's minimal.
- 36:39Well, when you are uninjured, just for injury prevention
- 36:42rather than actual rehab purposes.
- 36:45So on Thursday, I very gratefully went and collected a
- 36:51time trial bike from one of the front front runner members.
- 36:55Joe. It's quite, it's quite weird
- 36:57really, because the bike seemingly is a very good bike.
- 37:00So if you triathletes in the group as well, like, I mean, if
- 37:03it's got two wheels to me, then it's a bike.
- 37:05Like I don't really know if it's a good bike, a bad bike.
- 37:08I know what amount bikers and what Rd. bikers, but that's
- 37:10about as far as my knowledge goes.
- 37:12But a few of these triathletes know all the INS and outs and
- 37:16Adam seeing it straight away who was down at Munga and so was RAF
- 37:20and they were both like that's a good bit of kit.
- 37:23Where did you get that from? And obviously Joe's kindly lent
- 37:27me to cycle on and she says that she doesn't know where it came
- 37:31from. Someone's given it to her at
- 37:33some point for an injury and then it's just kind of been
- 37:35passed around and it's almost like this unknown anonymous
- 37:39bike, which is seemingly very expensive.
- 37:43So I've put a few KS on to that in the back half of the week.
- 37:47I won't tell you how long a road for or what, OK Square, but I've
- 37:53done about an hour and a half or an hour and 50 in each day.
- 37:57And yeah, it's interesting because I'm, I'm conscious of my
- 38:01straw uploads. I need to really go out on the
- 38:03way to find out how you privatize some of these things
- 38:06and just make it only visible to you because I don't know how
- 38:10bike rides correlate to runs. So like obviously if you see a
- 38:145K then based on however, what the time was, you can look at
- 38:18that and go, well, that's quick or that's slow or that's good
- 38:21though, that's bad. I don't know what these rides
- 38:23mean, but I know I've got a few triathlete to follow me and I'm
- 38:27worried that they're looking at these rides thinking you
- 38:30absolute little boy, like what are you doing pedaling round on
- 38:33this thing? So there was on I think it was
- 38:39Friday night. My when I put my watch onto a
- 38:43road by the settings, what in the watch, because I've never
- 38:46used it to ride before, seemed to split every 5K.
- 38:50So I noticed after like 10K when it split again I was like oh
- 38:54maybe I'll give one like 5K segment a bit of a push and see
- 38:58like how fast I can ride for 5K. How fast?
- 39:01Did you get? So I'm chasing 5K PBS on the
- 39:05bike. I think it was, it was nine, it
- 39:10was 9 minutes something. But this is what I'm I'm very
- 39:15intrigued about because these triathletes are probably looking
- 39:18at like fucking hell. I ride that for like 3 hours
- 39:20mate. Just give it a rest.
- 39:23Yeah. What's that like 35 KS an hour
- 39:25or something? Is that what would it work out
- 39:28today? Yeah, well, one of my mates at
- 39:30home did message me is like, oh, the scene, you've just done 27
- 39:35KS an hour for like over an hour there.
- 39:37It's a good ride that, but I know that the triathletes from
- 39:42Front Runner aren't looking at it in that light.
- 39:45Resolved. Downhills.
- 39:49Are I got onto a few of the hills today because it went out,
- 39:51went onto the coast and the I also rode into the headwind and
- 39:55it's been fun up until today, but that was a bit tough today I
- 39:59got onto an A pedestrian only path in.
- 40:03Is it Maylands? Yeah.
- 40:05And fuck, this was Saturday morning, so all like the dog
- 40:08walkers and the kids and the families were out.
- 40:10And I realized pretty quickly that there was no bikes here.
- 40:14So I was literally like peddling like that fast to give it enough
- 40:18speed so that I wouldn't topple over, just to like try and get
- 40:21myself off this pedestrian path. And within 20 meters 6 people
- 40:27told me it's a pedestrian only path and they were taking great
- 40:30pride in telling me as well. And I was like, oh, get me off
- 40:33this bloody path. So.
- 40:35It's been an interesting week. Quite sobering, huh?
- 40:40Yeah, seeing things from a different lens, boys.
- 40:43It's making me more weldy. That's it.
- 40:46You'll be a duat, like yeah. For when you can run, yeah,
- 40:48maybe. Yeah RAF, watch, watch your
- 40:51bloody records mate. So enough bike chat anyway Owen,
- 40:57tell us about some cross training chat.
- 40:59There's a lot of Viking and bike training as well.
- 41:01At the moment it's just stationary bike though.
- 41:06No, I've actually had some progress in the last week.
- 41:09So on when I got back home, I went to my physio and we
- 41:14couldn't really put our finger on the issue and he's like, dry
- 41:17needling might help. So then I went to another physio
- 41:20for dry needling and that was just last Tuesday and I was
- 41:24telling him where the issues were and he like, knew exactly.
- 41:29He like, could tell me where I was, feeling other pains and
- 41:33all. And I was like, Oh my God, yeah.
- 41:35And it turns out it was one second my tibialis posterior.
- 41:44And so I found the issue. I got needles in it and it
- 41:48totally released it. Like Tuesday, it's like the it's
- 41:51like the front of your. Yeah, yeah, that muscle at the
- 41:54front of your. So yeah, like I get needles.
- 42:00I got 2 here like you're. In the air again here, yeah.
- 42:04And yeah. You would consider shin splints.
- 42:07Basically, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah and got 2 nails in there
- 42:11and then like I went for a jog an hour later, pain free, done
- 42:1420 minute jog pain free totally. And then Wednesday, yeah, took
- 42:20it easy. And Thursday I jogged in the
- 42:24morning and I could faintly, faintly feel it.
- 42:27So I'm back to that physio. Thursday evening again, got the
- 42:30needles, flushed it out. And then then Friday morning I
- 42:36jogged and Saturday morning I jogged.
- 42:38So back-to-back two days. And yeah, felt good.
- 42:42So I think we found it. Go on.
- 42:45That's awesome. Yeah, yes, I think I found the
- 42:49issue and and apparently like I was doing trying to do a load of
- 42:54calf raises to like strengthen the cast and all that, but
- 42:57apparently that aggravates it a lot.
- 43:00So I'd like doing a lot more isometric stuff.
- 43:03But yeah, on Thursday I also had food poisoning.
- 43:07So I was literally just bad bound all day.
- 43:09I was so ill. And then this morning at.
- 43:12Work for two weeks and already on the set.
- 43:15I know I felt so bad. I just, I've done a cycle
- 43:18session Wednesday morning and then we didn't work after and I
- 43:21just didn't feel right in the cycle session and then in work I
- 43:25was just getting worse and worse.
- 43:26So I asked, could I go home on Wednesday evening?
- 43:30I literally just lay on the floor in a ball.
- 43:33I was in agony. My belly was a nuts and then
- 43:38like my muscles like aching and now I would feel sorry for
- 43:43myself as well. So probably wasn't that bad.
- 43:45But yeah, I thought, I thought my world was ending.
- 43:49And then yeah, Thursday was a bit right off as well.
- 43:52So basically like beyond the few poisoning, I'm back jogging and
- 43:59and yeah, done 80 minutes on the bike this morning.
- 44:02But the plan now is to like run three days in a row next week,
- 44:06take a day off, do four days in a row and then I'll probably be
- 44:11back in doing bigger like So I think I've like got a 40 minute
- 44:16jog tomorrow and then it goes 3035 day off.
- 44:20Then I'll have like a 403550 or something like that.
- 44:25And so Yep, slowly getting back to the the running is.
- 44:29This increasing. You go there.
- 44:31Yes. And I was just going to ask, So
- 44:33basically increasing like load, running load, but you will look
- 44:36to sounds like you're still maintaining some intensity on
- 44:40cross training. So you'll still try to sort of
- 44:42keep that quality without loading the legs up, but just as
- 44:46your legs sort of as you reintroduce running in and
- 44:49around it. Yeah.
- 44:50So basically now I'm doing a lot more error so I'll I'll still
- 44:53cross train, but I'll add the running in on top of it because
- 44:56like the bike takes nothing. So I'm basically just peddling
- 44:59like mad on the bike to try and get the intensity in and and
- 45:03hopefully then I'll be able to do some more sessions.
- 45:05So it's just been so long. I feel like I've been out for
- 45:08like a year, but. How's your heart rate on your
- 45:13jugs? My job, my hair has been 140.
- 45:16I thought it'd be well worse to be honest, but like even when
- 45:20I've been injured, like I've been constantly cross training
- 45:22and doing something like I've never had a period where I've
- 45:25done nothing. So hopefully I'll get it back
- 45:28pretty quick and I just need a hope and pray that this actually
- 45:33fixes it is the issue and like the last thing I want is another
- 45:37issue it. Sounds very promising though.
- 45:39Yeah, hopefully now and I'll be doing less cycling.
- 45:43And is that being the the kind of the training being managed by
- 45:47your Irish coach? Yeah, Yeah.
- 45:49So back with Irish coach now. And so it's going to be a little
- 45:52bit different. I think I'll be looking at that
- 45:54sort of double threshold approach.
- 45:57I'll invest in one of them lactate pro thingies, my bobbies
- 46:01and. Yeah, I've got I've had some
- 46:03feedback on that as in, as in because the device I've got, so
- 46:08I've got it's called a Lactate Pro 2.
- 46:10I think the issue is it takes a fairly small blood sample and
- 46:14there's another type of device, I'll find out the name that
- 46:17requires a slightly larger sample.
- 46:20And so it can often read more accurately more of the time,
- 46:24like particularly in Perth, you know, like over summer when
- 46:26you're getting so sweaty so often you're getting inaccurate
- 46:30readings or it's harder to get an accurate reading.
- 46:33You can just tell. You can tell when the reading's
- 46:35just not close to what you anticipate the rating to be that
- 46:38it sort of hasn't read well. So I'll find out what the the
- 46:41other device that was suggested to me, Kenji sort of said, hey,
- 46:45you should try this device instead, particularly if you're
- 46:48getting inaccurate rating. So I'll find out what the 1 is.
- 46:51Yeah, send that my way. Yeah, like I don't need to be
- 46:55peaking until like winter. So like Chris around Christmas
- 46:59time, late November. So I've got loads of time to get
- 47:02that. Is that for cross country?
- 47:04Yeah, cross country, Yeah, and. I'll be curious to know what you
- 47:07and your Irish coach agree together in terms of with your
- 47:10double threshold, because I suspect it'll be you guys will
- 47:13look to do things fairly conservatively in terms of like
- 47:16lower, lower intensity to say some of the sessions we're
- 47:19doing. Would would you agree like
- 47:21around that some of that threshold running?
- 47:23Probably, yeah. And again, like it's, I'll just
- 47:26try it out for a little while. And because again, it's it's
- 47:29safer. Like you've less of that like
- 47:31really high intensity stuff and you just add, sprinkle, add in
- 47:35near the end when you're coming to the race.
- 47:36So look, yeah, still early guys. I'm still super unfit.
- 47:40So yeah, that's the plan. Cool.
- 47:42Yeah, I love it. It will be.
- 47:44I know we we still need to get RAF on and I'm so bloody annoyed
- 47:49that myself that we haven't, but it's just more so like fear of
- 47:52the technology and like actually getting Raft to log on.
- 47:56Like it would be so much easier to do it in person.
- 47:58But then again, we don't know how to set this thing up in
- 48:01person, do we? But I'm leaning towards like,
- 48:04it'd be so good for you and your Irish coach to chat on here as
- 48:08well to see like the different perspective.
- 48:10But then again, like, would the Aussie listeners be able to
- 48:13understand anything between? Two, he's very well articulated.
- 48:18He'll be all right. Yeah.
- 48:20If they can understand me, they'll understand him.
- 48:22What what is his background? Was he He used to run himself I.
- 48:25Don't know if he ran much, but he's like the highest level
- 48:29coach in Ireland. Like he's got that like degree
- 48:32or coaching certificate or whatever that is.
- 48:35And so like he knows his stuff but and he used to coach,
- 48:39there's an Irish marathon runner called She part, she was Fenulla
- 48:43McCormick. Then she got married so now
- 48:44she's Fenulla Britain and she's represented Ireland in like 5
- 48:47Olympics. She dominated the Euro Cross
- 48:51that many times, didn't she? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:53So when she was younger, he coached her.
- 48:56So like, he sort of knows stuff. And so no, yeah, I'll be
- 49:00interested to give it a go and see what happens.
- 49:02Cool. Yeah, good stuff.
- 49:03So we had the good, bad and a good week and on a positive.
- 49:08Good sandwich. Let's bring that analogy back up
- 49:13again. I almost got in trouble last
- 49:16time with the genders involved. So YouTube Diaries then?
- 49:24Has anyone got a channel that they wish to talk about this
- 49:27week? And I'll do one, but just a
- 49:32quick little shout out and round to Japan.
- 49:35I'm halfway through his most recent video.
- 49:37It's like an hour and it's him being sick in Copenhagen.
- 49:42And it's actually, it's actually nuts.
- 49:44So give that one a watch. Yeah, yeah, he's inside.
- 49:50The story was, I mean, can you laugh about it?
- 49:53Hopefully is he okay? Because otherwise he can't.
- 49:56In the video it's worse, like he literally so much worse in the
- 50:00video. Yeah, yeah, what happened?
- 50:01Like he's nearly crying and stuff.
- 50:03No, it's actually really, really good this week is he's a British
- 50:08YouTuber. I tell you, he's arguably or the
- 50:12most biggest infamy like running YouTube.
- 50:15Ben is running. So he most recently ran London
- 50:21Marathon. But a lot of this stuff is just
- 50:23your general like shoe. Like he does a lot of shoes.
- 50:26He gets sent so, so many pairs of shoes.
- 50:29I wish I was him, but he yeah, his PBS are he ran 66 mid in
- 50:36Copenhagen just before in London in the marathon, he's run 220
- 50:43low 224 was it, and 5K he's around 1430 high.
- 50:49And so yeah, he's a pretty, pretty good runner, but his
- 50:52content is just so good and he posts pretty frequently as well.
- 50:56And so and. He seems like, he seems like
- 50:58quite a, it's like quite nice, quite a likable, isn't he?
- 51:02He's very like upbeat with his running and seems like quite a
- 51:07nice person, doesn't he? So he feels very endearing.
- 51:10So it's sort of, you sort of want him to do well, don't you
- 51:14want to see? Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 51:16Yeah, yeah. And he's sort of relatable in a
- 51:18way as well, because yeah, he's no, even though he gets so much
- 51:22free stuff and he's basically a professional athlete, he's.
- 51:26We didn't start out like that way with his YouTube channel,
- 51:29you know, sort of only come into that.
- 51:31And I think now it seems very far more common with a lot of
- 51:35these like emerging, you know, athletes and sub elite athletes
- 51:39that have a good following. They can sort of get into a lot
- 51:41of races. I think he's been like a bit
- 51:43better supported with some races as well, which is a byproduct of
- 51:47his YouTube following, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:51He did a series over in in Kenya and things like that, didn't he?
- 51:55He sort of, he's done some training camps and so before.
- 51:58His Copenhagen half marathon, he'd done a stint in Kenya and
- 52:03he pulled up. He'd done really, really well.
- 52:05So he'd done it again for, for London.
- 52:09But yeah, I don't know, I think the heat got home in London or
- 52:13something like that. He.
- 52:14I. Think he went out.
- 52:15He went out too too hard though. Too hard.
- 52:17And he went out pretty. Yeah, he went out.
- 52:20He split something that was pretty ambitious based on his
- 52:23half time. He's coached by that Victor
- 52:25Smags guy. He's just like Swedish, he's
- 52:30sort of an influencer as well, but he's sponsored by on.
- 52:33He's got that like mad mustache and but yeah, he's again, the
- 52:37big double threshold sort of guy.
- 52:38So actually Ben is running threshold work as well now.
- 52:43But yeah, no, no, super loads of content.
- 52:45So he's got a catalog of YouTube videos.
- 52:48Yeah, he's one of the the OG rum fluoencers if you like, I think,
- 52:52isn't he? Yeah, yeah, Doing it for a
- 52:54while. Him versus Nick Bester as the
- 52:57the top running influencer in the UK.
- 53:00Anyway, Yeah, good stuff. Thanks, Owen.
- 53:02Double trouble then, unless Dean, did you have any channels
- 53:06that you want to talk about this week or you're going to save
- 53:08them? Yeah, and I should keep keep
- 53:11some up my sleeve. That's fair.
- 53:15Double trouble. Are you going to say something?
- 53:18I was just going to mention, did you say easy release to 1/3
- 53:21video? So.
- 53:22Oh yeah, created some cadence, Yeah.
- 53:24Is that from the ASICS meet in Tokyo?
- 53:27No, no. So I think got that far, yet it
- 53:29was the the three tag. So it's good like from.
- 53:32Maritaining a catalog. It's from the American 3K in
- 53:34like 3 weeks or something like. That yeah, yeah.
- 53:36Yeah, there's it's hard now because I used to have like same
- 53:40with the podcasts, you'd have almost a routine of like how
- 53:43you'd get through them in a week, like which ones you'd go
- 53:46to 1st and you second one, your third one, whatever.
- 53:48And then maybe like on a way you had more going on in life
- 53:52outside of just bloody consumer running content.
- 53:55You would miss a podcast or two. And that was the same with
- 53:58YouTube. And you would have like you two
- 54:00or three, four channels that you would watch and you wouldn't
- 54:03miss anything. But now there's like so many
- 54:06keep popping up, it's hard to stay consistent and watch them
- 54:09all. But it's it's good being spoiled
- 54:12for. Choices.
- 54:15I've actually, I've actually gone down a rabbit hole of of
- 54:18Pokémon Youtubers like the Teds. Like I haven't a clue about
- 54:26Pokémon but I love watching them like go to like these big when.
- 54:31They pull a red card. And no, no, even they like the
- 54:34cards are already pulled, but they like get them like graded
- 54:37and all and like, I haven't a clue and some of them are crazy
- 54:40money. But yeah, that's what I like
- 54:43watching. Lately I've been down that
- 54:46rabbit hole. I was down that rabbit hole
- 54:48during COVID because in COVID there was not as much to content
- 54:51to sort of consume or things to do.
- 54:54And so that's when I think poker one started shooting off again
- 54:56because I think people are at home dusting off their
- 54:58collections. They're working out how much
- 55:00cards were worth. Yeah.
- 55:01But yeah, they, they go to those shows and they try and complete
- 55:04sets like, you know, like collectors.
- 55:06They try and complete set, like do challenges and trade cards
- 55:09up. And yeah, I don't know, very
- 55:11wholesome activity as well. Like kids get into it and stuff.
- 55:13It's quite nice. Yeah, that sounds like.
- 55:16Wormhole. That's something people will
- 55:19keep close to the chest, isn't it?
- 55:21But then I I reckon there's like more people than you would
- 55:24imagine are actually into that kind of thing.
- 55:26And if you somehow got onto the subject and one person was brave
- 55:30enough to say well I like Yugioh or whatever, then shit opens up
- 55:34a kind of worms. There's a embarrassed, there's
- 55:38this guy, his names like Leonhart or something like that,
- 55:41like Lionheart. He's a poker, he's Pokémon mad,
- 55:45he's a lawyer. And now I think he's just
- 55:47because he's Pokémon collection maybe grew or whatever.
- 55:49I think he just creates content. But there's this video of him
- 55:52unwrapping Pokémon cards in his like local library and he pulls
- 55:56this card and you should see his reaction like it's genuine, but
- 55:59it's just, it's an absolute cracker and he's just falling to
- 56:02the floor celebrating like this card and he can't yell because
- 56:05he's in a library and it's some YouTube gold.
- 56:11I don't think we'll put it in the show notes, but.
- 56:16That's like, did you ever play Ultimate Team on FIFA?
- 56:19Did you ever play FIFA and you'd be able to open packs on
- 56:23Ultimate Team? And if you got like a walkout
- 56:25and stuff, People used to do videos opening them didn't they?
- 56:30Rabbit hole there. But good times.
- 56:33Double Trouble shit I was going to say about because I was, I
- 56:37was struggling because I haven't really been running or thinking
- 56:40too much about running. I didn't really have anything
- 56:42that had been annoying me. But one thing I have been
- 56:45conscious of is my cycling activities just taking up
- 56:49people's feeds on Strava. So like I said, I need to get on
- 56:52top of the privacy settings because the double trouble is
- 56:55potentially people. I mean, when the shoe's on the
- 56:58other foot and I'm running all the time and I'm fit, I don't
- 57:01really want to be seeing people's unless it's the
- 57:03triathletes who are doing my now have a new found admiration of
- 57:08like these 100K rides and three hour rides and stuff, then
- 57:12they're fair enough. I'll accept that.
- 57:15But my little shitty 20K rides and 30 K rides.
- 57:19They just don't need to be clogging up the the feed on the
- 57:22daily, do they? I I went dark on Strava because
- 57:26like, I feel like when you're injured and you're not running,
- 57:29the last thing, it's probably the wrong way to do it.
- 57:31But like the last thing you want to see is how other people are
- 57:33doing because like you get jealous and they're improving
- 57:37and it's just not good for the head.
- 57:39But like I was reading your man. Who's the Ryan Hall?
- 57:43His book? And he was saying that like you
- 57:46shouldn't compare yourself to others.
- 57:48Pardon. Run the mall you're in is that.
- 57:50What? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 57:52You shouldn't be comparing yourself to others like you.
- 57:55You literally should only compare yourself to yourself.
- 57:58And so I can totally see where you're coming from.
- 58:01Ryan and I went there for the last 8 to 10 weeks on Strava.
- 58:05And it was really just when I started running there during the
- 58:07week, I actually opened it up again and like, I turned off
- 58:10notifications. I literally just removed the app
- 58:13from the home screen because I just didn't want to know about
- 58:16it. And but yeah, after like, going
- 58:19through that book, like, that's the only reason I would have
- 58:22went off travels because I just do not want to see what other
- 58:25people are doing. Like, just concentrate on
- 58:26myself. But at the end of the day, like,
- 58:29you're only against yourself. So I can see where you're coming
- 58:32from. As a side note, I love that
- 58:34book. I think you had it's like 26
- 58:36chapters for the 26 miles of the marathon.
- 58:38And he sort of talks a bit about his evolution as a runner, like
- 58:42when he's young, like racing guys in workouts just wanting to
- 58:45beat everyone. And then as he's getting older,
- 58:48what matters for him in races is like less about the outcome, but
- 58:54but more about like how he sort of best can express his fitness
- 58:58in a like best, you know, get the most out of his own
- 59:00performance. And I don't know, I just yeah,
- 59:03it was pretty. It was a cool book.
- 59:05And then talked about, because he always had that famous quote
- 59:08wasn't attached to him about trained by God because he sort
- 59:11of didn't have a coach. He was sort of self coached and
- 59:13very religious. And so you're sort of never sure
- 59:15what that meant. But it sort of makes more sense
- 59:17after you sort of listen to his sort of journey through running
- 59:20and that period of time where he was sort of self coached.
- 59:23And yeah, I don't know. Really really cool book.
- 59:26He's so religious, I had no idea how religious he was.
- 59:29He always quotes the valuable versus in the book.
- 59:34Not very good. You know, Matt Fox used to go on
- 59:37about a podcast that Ryan Hall was on and I was never able to
- 59:40find it of either used listen to it.
- 59:42Yeah, yeah. I'll share it.
- 59:44Will you take it out? Yeah, yeah, He was on Matt.
- 59:48He interviewed him on Sweat Elite in a short form, but
- 59:50there's a much longer podcast that he was on.
- 59:54Yeah, I'll find it. I forget the name.
- 59:56I forget the name off the top about who the podcast
- 59:59interviewer was, but quite a famous podcast interviewer.
- 1:00:01It goes for like two or three hours.
- 1:00:02Very good. Just whilst we're on the subject
- 1:00:05of Matt Fox, did you ever think on the back of Ballarat, like
- 1:00:09remember he was potentially going to be there and stuff?
- 1:00:12Wasn't he like in amongst everything that went on at the
- 1:00:15front of the race and whatever, how fun would it have been to
- 1:00:17have Matt Fox all involved in that as well?
- 1:00:20It's a shame. Yeah, it's all those sliding
- 1:00:22door moments, but yeah, it's sliding door moments in life.
- 1:00:25But yeah, it would have been cool if he was there.
- 1:00:27Do we actually know 100% what is the issue or like not?
- 1:00:32Anything since, because I actually went back on to the the
- 1:00:35letter run feed for it like last week or so and and there haven't
- 1:00:40been many more comments since like that official announcement
- 1:00:43or whatever. So God knows that's.
- 1:00:46Scary. Apparently his Strava has been
- 1:00:48deleted now or like and his personal Instagram or something.
- 1:00:51That's what the feed was saying anyway.
- 1:00:53But like sweat elite coaching Academy, every now and then it
- 1:00:55will repost like one of the athletes tags it and it reposts
- 1:00:59it but that's literally it. And going back to the double
- 1:01:02trouble, I, I think it depends massively as well about your,
- 1:01:08your mindset when you you're saying no and about like going
- 1:01:12dark on straw and all that because you don't want to see
- 1:01:14stuff from whatever. And that is entirely like
- 1:01:17correct. But then I've seen both sides of
- 1:01:21it. Like just in this past week
- 1:01:22alone, you'll see like an unbelievable session from
- 1:01:25someone who you might compare yourself to or like a race
- 1:01:28result from someone. And it can make you think one of
- 1:01:32two ways, either like be demotivated by it and be like,
- 1:01:35fuck's sake, or be motivated, motivated by it and help like
- 1:01:40kind of get that mojo back or whatever.
- 1:01:42And it purely depends on on your mindset in that exact moment
- 1:01:47when you like see that. And, and what I'm saying is
- 1:01:49like, I've had two examples this week where one's went one way
- 1:01:53and one's went the other way. So I guess it's just being
- 1:01:56mindful and conscious that like, you're going to feel differently
- 1:01:59about it in different moments, and as long as eventually you're
- 1:02:03well-intentioned enough to get back on track and you're
- 1:02:05motivated to sort yourself out, then things will come good,
- 1:02:09hopefully. There's nothing wrong with a
- 1:02:10little detox. Like we're so invested in the
- 1:02:13sport that like when you take a little detox, you come back more
- 1:02:16hungry. Yeah, it's hard when you're when
- 1:02:19you missed a host though. Yes.
- 1:02:21You can't detox too much. You're in the middle of.
- 1:02:26It yeah, it's good though because that's accountability in
- 1:02:28itself you can't completely switch off or disengage totally.
- 1:02:31And Rafts checking in on me, I think he knows maybe I'm needing
- 1:02:36a bit of a poke in the right direction the time.
- 1:02:39So it's good. Accountability comes from
- 1:02:41different directions and then ultimately you know deep down
- 1:02:44yourself what you need to be doing.
- 1:02:46So it's just being reminded of it sometimes.
- 1:02:48Like if you did, we could always like do Pokémon next week.
- 1:02:53I could take their hands. Let's start a spin off channel.
- 1:02:59Yeah, if there's any keen Pokémon followers then maybe
- 1:03:02we'll set up Patreon and Pokémon will be the subject A.
- 1:03:06Little side quest. Road to God?
- 1:03:10What's like a made-up place in Pokémon world or something?
- 1:03:14I don't even know. Well, yeah, true.
- 1:03:23We don't have any listener questions because the the
- 1:03:25episode kind of came impromptu that we all jumped on together
- 1:03:30and recorded this, didn't it? But whilst we're on that
- 1:03:33subject, again, as of next week also will be in the UK, so well
- 1:03:38for a short period, well six, 5-6 weeks.
- 1:03:41So hopefully we'll keep this Sunday evening slot, then
- 1:03:46recording. It's kind of going to work well
- 1:03:48for us all, isn't it? Because I won't be able to do
- 1:03:50Mondays with work and stuff. In the middle, like it's 1:00 in
- 1:03:54the middle of the day. I mean normally.
- 1:03:56Of course, but thinking ahead to next Sunday, Liverpool are going
- 1:04:01to be lifting the Premier League trophy in the afternoon, so
- 1:04:06Sunday morning again would be good.
- 1:04:07Sounds good. Sounds good to me.
- 1:04:10Anyone got anything major that's going to be happening in the
- 1:04:14next 7 days? May have a double, a double
- 1:04:17threshold, or a HBF run that'll that'll be my one or the other,
- 1:04:22maybe both. Oh, did you?
- 1:04:24Did you see whether how Moose got on a thingy?
- 1:04:27What's it called? No Great Ocean Road.
- 1:04:30Yeah, Great Ocean Road. Yeah, no.
- 1:04:32It's came to me a couple of times today to go go and check
- 1:04:35the result, but I haven't actually got to do it.
- 1:04:38I have to go check that out. Was it the half he run?
- 1:04:41Yeah, I think so. I wonder would the results be
- 1:04:44all? You get $1500 for the win there.
- 1:04:47Not bad payday. Not in the mass part of the
- 1:04:50world. But I think they were saying is
- 1:04:52it Andre Werin has won it a few times in the past few years.
- 1:04:55So it's not it's not an easy payday.
- 1:04:57Yeah, no, I can't find these results, no.
- 1:05:01Anything major coming up for you this week, Aaron, besides just
- 1:05:04hopefully getting back to some more normal training?
- 1:05:08And this week, no, literally just working and a little bit
- 1:05:13more running now. Returning from your sick
- 1:05:16absence. So did you do that on Friday?
- 1:05:18I I went back to work on Friday. Yeah, I would mind when I was
- 1:05:22working with them before. Like I never, like, I actually
- 1:05:25rarely get sick. And I just felt so bad.
- 1:05:28Like you're only back to work a week and you're calling in sick.
- 1:05:32I'm like, oh shit, this isn't like the best start.
- 1:05:36Go on. I've I've just got Mr. Strava.
- 1:05:40There's no result. It's titled Great Ocean Road
- 1:05:42half with the description felt smooth until I didn't, then I
- 1:05:46didn't. So perhaps it didn't go
- 1:05:48amazingly, but I mean, I still got the.
- 1:05:52One but. And the Brooks half marathon?
- 1:05:55Oh no. Sebastian Asher won in 70.
- 1:05:59Andre wearing 71. Julian Spence was one. 234.
- 1:06:05Five sixth in 77. Fair enough.
- 1:06:08Yeah, well, on Friday I've got a big travel day flying back to
- 1:06:12the UK So Dean, make sure you send that podcast through
- 1:06:15because I'm. I'm like a squirrel gathering
- 1:06:18all my nuts for the offline prolonged fucking travel.
- 1:06:23And potentially, Ryan Hall's book could could be a shout as
- 1:06:26well. Ryan.
- 1:06:26Who are you flying, Ryan? I was gonna say his audio book
- 1:06:29is pretty good. Oh yeah, there you go, flying
- 1:06:32with Qatar. Oh nice, you'll be treated.
- 1:06:35They are pretty good to be fair. I've used them before.
- 1:06:37It's it's not a bad time either. It leaves Perth at 10:45 PM.
- 1:06:43Yeah, I think I took something like that.
- 1:06:45Yeah, with time difference, you're back in Manchester midday
- 1:06:48Saturday, so it's it's ideal. It's just on my on that night
- 1:06:52flight, there was a baby roaring, as we said in daughter
- 1:06:55podcast roaring. You're crying.
- 1:06:56So yeah, I didn't get much sleep on the ball, but you're a bit
- 1:06:59luckier. Kids, man.
- 1:07:03Speaking of. Your best.
- 1:07:05Yeah. Yeah, right.
- 1:07:07All right. Cheers.
- 1:07:08Nice pleasure. All right, good luck.
