- 0:39We are back in the book of Azorean, folklore recorded by LC
- 0:43Spicer eels. Today we're going to learn about
- 0:46a little Tom Thumb type of boy who helps his father become
- 0:48rich. And in the Second Story, we have
- 0:51a touch of The Little Mermaid mixed with.
- 0:54Or is she mataró? Visiting the ocean World.
- 0:57Okay, let's begin. Manuel little bean, the story of
- 1:02how he helped his father. Long ago, there lived, a man and
- 1:07his wife wed, no children. I wish I had a little boys at
- 1:11the man, I'd like a son of my own even if he were no larger
- 1:16than a little beans of the woman.
- 1:19Time passed in a son was born to this worthy couple.
- 1:22He was no larger than a little being and as the years went by,
- 1:25he never grew any bigger. His name was Manuel little bean.
- 1:30He caused his mother endless trouble by constantly getting
- 1:33lost. Sometimes she'd nearly step on
- 1:36him other times. He'd fall into the food and she
- 1:39would almost swallow him. One day, his mother couldn't
- 1:43find him Manuel, little being Manuel little bean.
- 1:48She called there was no answer. She went outside the house and
- 1:53called his name. Anxiously, there was no reply.
- 1:57She asked all the neighbors if they had seen their child, but
- 2:00there was nobody who had noticed him that day.
- 2:03His poor mother was nearly wild with anxiety.
- 2:06I'm afraid I'll never see the dear child again.
- 2:09She mourned. I'm sure I've either stepped on
- 2:11him or swallowed him. You've never stepped on him or
- 2:16swallowed him, yet comfort, her husband, however, he added
- 2:19anxiously. I can't see what has become of
- 2:22my manual. The truth of the matter was that
- 2:25manual little being had been swallowed by the goat.
- 2:28He was a most active youngster, in spite of a small size and he
- 2:32caused the Goethe terrible attack of indigestion.
- 2:35The goat did not know what was the matter and a tour around.
- 2:38So wildly and caused so much destruction that his master
- 2:41decided to kill him. I simply can't be bothered with
- 2:45that goat any longer? He said I have quite enough to
- 2:48worry about already with Manuel little being lost and my poor
- 2:51wife nearly sick with anxiety because of it.
- 2:55He never dreamed that, it was his son, who was making the goat
- 2:58go, so wild with misery when the goat was dead, he threw it out
- 3:02into the street. That night a wolf came and ate
- 3:06the goat, he swallowed the goat's stomach.
- 3:09So greedily the Manuel little bean had no time to escape
- 3:14However, he jumped about just as actively inside the wolf, as he
- 3:17had done with the goat had swallowed him.
- 3:21The wolf was just as uncomfortable as the goat had
- 3:23been. What is the matter with me?
- 3:26Thought the wolf never in my life have I had such a stomach
- 3:29ache I believe. I'm going to die.
- 3:32He ran away into the forest and crept into a cave to await his
- 3:35end inside. The cave was a robbers Den Three
- 3:38Robbers were there counting over the gold.
- 3:40They had just brought back when they saw the wolf.
- 3:43They were so frightened that they drop their bags of golden
- 3:45ran away as fast as they could leaving everything behind them.
- 3:50Manuel little bean guess that he was making the wolf sick.
- 3:53If I can only make him so ill that he will spit me up, said,
- 3:57Manuel to himself as he jumped about his liveliest.
- 4:00That is exactly what happened. The wolf spit, man, or a little
- 4:03bean out. It was decidedly dirty and
- 4:06unattractive, but he didn't mind in the least.
- 4:09He saw the quantities of gold in the robbers cave and his eyes
- 4:12Shone. If I can only find my way home
- 4:15and tell my father about it, he will become a rich man.
- 4:18He cried It was a long distance home and several times.
- 4:22He thought he had lost his way. Finally, however, he saw his own
- 4:26Mother's light in the window. He ran toward it as fast as he
- 4:29could run. Manuel little bean.
- 4:32What have you been doing? Cried his mother.
- 4:34When she saw him, where did you get so dirty?
- 4:37Come. Let me give you a bath.
- 4:38First thing, never mind about the bath mother said Manuel, I
- 4:43have more important things to attend to where is father His
- 4:47mother called her husband and they both forgot how dirty the
- 4:50child was when they heard his story.
- 4:53Let us hurry to the robbers cave.
- 4:54Father. He said we must get there before
- 4:56they return. What about the wolf asked?
- 4:59His mother, anxiously Manuel little bean laughed.
- 5:03The wolf doesn't have a stomachache now.
- 5:05He said he went home a long time ago.
- 5:08They went to the robbers cave and brought home the huge sacks
- 5:11full of gold. It was enough to make them live
- 5:13like Prince's for a lifetime. I have the best in cleverest,
- 5:17son, in the world said the father never in the world.
- 5:20Has there been a son who was such a joy and comfort to his
- 5:22parents at his mother? Manuel little bean was treated
- 5:26by everyone as politely as if he had been big.
- 5:30The end. Okay.
- 5:50And Story number two, the necklace of pearls, the story of
- 5:54a water nymph and an island lad. In a tiny Cottage on the Steep
- 5:59Rocky. Hillside of one of the islands
- 6:01of the Azores. They lived a poor woman and her
- 6:04only son whose name was Francisco.
- 6:08Every day, the boy went fishing in his little boat and every
- 6:11night, he brought home, fish for his mother to cook for their
- 6:14evening meal, and to carry into the market to sell.
- 6:18In this way, they lived very comfortably and they loved each
- 6:21other, so dearly that they were as happy as happy can be.
- 6:25Francisco with his Sunkissed skin, green eyes and thatch a
- 6:29black. Curly hair was the handsomest
- 6:31boy, in the whole Parish by the time he was 20 years old.
- 6:34There were many rich man's daughter who smiled upon Him.
- 6:38However, the lad thought only of his fishing boat and his mother
- 6:41and did not notice the smiles. One night, the moon was so
- 6:46bright that Francisco could not sleep.
- 6:49He awakened his mother who was dozing comfortably in her bed.
- 6:53I'm going fishing Mother, Dear. He said, as he kissed her, the
- 6:57Moonlight is calling me. His mother started up from her
- 7:01bed and Terror and amazement. Why am I boy?
- 7:04Do you do such a thing as this she asked.
- 7:06You have never been fishing in the night before some evil will
- 7:10surely befall. You don't worry about me.
- 7:13Dear Mother replied Francisco, laughing at her fears.
- 7:16I know how to take care of myself.
- 7:18It is as light as day, think of how many fish I'll bring back
- 7:21for you to sell in the market tomorrow.
- 7:24His mother shook her head anxiously, but with another
- 7:26loving kiss, the lad ran out into the bright Moonlight, he
- 7:30quickly launched his little fishing boat and was soon
- 7:32floating smoothly along on the Peaceful Waters of the bay,
- 7:35which gleamed like a silver pathway in the Moonlight.
- 7:39The soft are the gentle rocking of the little boat, in the face
- 7:42of the Moon upon, which his green eyes were fixed combined,
- 7:44to send sleep to his eyelids. Soon, he was nodding off in the
- 7:49little boat. A few moments later, he was fast
- 7:52asleep, the moon's Rays upon his curls, made them shine, as if
- 7:56they were indeed made of obsidian.
- 8:00Now, the village maidens, were not the only ones who had
- 8:02noticed Francisco's, green eyes and handsome, face, a water
- 8:06nymph who dwelt in the depths of the sea had often observed him.
- 8:11In the daytime, she was invisible to the eye of humans
- 8:14and so the lad had never seen her even though she often spent
- 8:17long hours near him never taking her eyes off his face.
- 8:22Here comes the beautiful youth in his little fishing boat,
- 8:25cried the nymph as she saw the Moonlight gleaming upon his
- 8:27shiny curls at last my wishes come true now at night, he'll be
- 8:32able to see me she, hastily arranged her own beautiful hair
- 8:36before, a little mirror. She carried some of the strands
- 8:39of the Priceless pearls, which decked out her lovely head were
- 8:41a trifle awry these in the necklaces of rare pearls, which
- 8:45hung about her pale throat surrounded, her with a gleam of
- 8:47soft light almost like the light of the Moon.
- 8:52As she approached a little boat. She said that Francisco was fast
- 8:54asleep. She swam in the direction of the
- 8:57lad with all possible speed. A wild Terror in her eyes.
- 9:02What Madness is this shaft? As she looked down upon his
- 9:05bowed head. This frail boat will drift upon
- 9:08the dangerous rocks and be dashed to Pieces.
- 9:10I'll take him to my home. My own Palace without waking
- 9:13him. Perhaps, when he sees how lovely
- 9:15it is, he'll even like me a little bit.
- 9:19Just for a moment she has at ated thinking, how far from home
- 9:22Francisco would be in the Palace of the mother of pearl in the
- 9:25depths of the sea. These rocks are really very
- 9:29dangerous. She said to herself as she
- 9:31gently drew his sleeping form into her arms.
- 9:35The next morning Francis goes empty fishing boat was found by
- 9:38the fishermen four hours. His mother had watched in vain
- 9:41for his return. When at last she heard that the
- 9:44empty boat had been found. She was nearly wild with grief.
- 9:48He was the best son, a mother could ever have.
- 9:51She moaned over again and again, how can I live without him?
- 9:56Indeed as the days and weeks went by, was increasingly
- 9:59difficult for the poor woman to live.
- 10:01She not only missed her boys, loving smile, but she also
- 10:04missed the fish. He caught so skillfully.
- 10:07There was a little for the poor woman to eat if she had any
- 10:09appetite for food. Why don't you go to the wise man
- 10:12of the sea and tell him? Your troubles asked one of the
- 10:14neighbors Francisco's, mother knew that it was a long and
- 10:18difficult journey to reach the wise man of the sea.
- 10:21She decided, however, it would be worth the effort just to gaze
- 10:24into his Wise Eyes. He knew so much.
- 10:27Perhaps he would know how to say something to comfort her and her
- 10:29great sorrow and loneliness, She had Shrugged her shoulders when
- 10:34her neighbor had spoken of it, but she could not get the idea
- 10:37out of her mind. She knew that she would never
- 10:40rest in peace until she made this journey.
- 10:43Accordingly, she launched Francis goes fishing boat and
- 10:46thanks to the smooth Seas. Reached a little Rocky island in
- 10:49the midst. The sea were the wise man of the
- 10:51sea lived. his tall form was outlined above the cliff even as
- 10:56she tied, her little boat, He was very tall far taller than
- 11:00anybody she had ever seen and is Snow, White Beard, fell to his
- 11:03feet. He was clothed in fish scales,
- 11:06which gleamed in the sunlight, well, little mother.
- 11:10Or can I do for you today? He asked she came up the path to
- 11:14the sum of The Rock. The eyes of the wise man of the
- 11:17sea were very kind, as well as full of great wisdom
- 11:21Francisco's, mother forgot to be afraid of him as she expected to
- 11:24be. She told him the story of her
- 11:26lost, son. The wise, man, listen carefully
- 11:30to her words and then he said good mother.
- 11:33I'm glad to tell you that I know where your friend Cisco is, he
- 11:37is in the power of a water. Nymph was carried him away to
- 11:40her castle of mother-of-pearl. In the depths of the sea,
- 11:44princess goes, mother felt tears of joy, while up in her eyes.
- 11:48Is my boy happy there. And is he?
- 11:50Well, she asked eagerly. He is entirely well and happy
- 11:56the water nymph, gave him a potion which has made him forget
- 11:59his past life entirely. I'm glad you told me that said,
- 12:03the boy's mother. I was just wondering how my dear
- 12:06lad could be happy. While he was causing me so much
- 12:08sorrow, he has always been the best in kind of son with which a
- 12:12mother was ever blessed. The wise man of the sea started
- 12:16to say something, but the woman interrupted as a new thought
- 12:19fluent, remind tell me she cried, is there?
- 12:23No other way of getting him back with all your wisdom?
- 12:26Can't you think of some way to make him once more?
- 12:28Remember the mother who loves him the little home, which we
- 12:31have passed so many happy days together.
- 12:34Do you not know some means of breaking the power which this
- 12:36water nymph has over him? The wise man looked out across
- 12:40the sea and silence for at least a minute and a half.
- 12:44You thought hard Francisco's, mother watched him with eager
- 12:48eyes? She could hardly wait for his
- 12:50answer. At last.
- 12:52These were the words which fell from his lips, you have shed
- 12:56many tears. Go to Amman.
- 12:58But tears are still to flow. If you were to bring back your
- 13:00son, oh must, I suffer more hard, the heartbroken mother.
- 13:05It seems that I've already lived a lifetime since my dear lad
- 13:08kissed me in the Moonlight, I have endeared all that I can
- 13:11bear. The wise man smiled gently, as
- 13:14he raised his hand. Listen my child, he said your
- 13:18tears must be shed upon the bosom of the waters.
- 13:22If perchance, one of them should fall upon your son's heart there
- 13:25in the Palace of the water nymph, in the depths of the sea,
- 13:28the power over filter will be broken.
- 13:31I'll shed, whole oceans of Tears if I can break the power of that
- 13:34water, nymph and bring back my friend.
- 13:36Cisco said his mother. The fact is that she began to
- 13:39shed tears, then in there even before she had.
- 13:41Thank the wise man of the sea for what he had told her.
- 13:46Now, it happened that Francisco had grown to love the beautiful
- 13:48palace of mother-of-pearl in the depths of the sea, he never
- 13:52tired of all its beauty about the palace that were lovely,
- 13:55Gardens filled with flowers made of precious gems, each Tiny.
- 13:59But of, that Garden was worth a king's Ransom.
- 14:01So rich with ADD rules that composed it The water nymph
- 14:06often gathered her arms full of these rare blossoms and wove
- 14:09them into a Garland to Crown Francisco's.
- 14:11Glassy curls, he never had a thought of the old life at home
- 14:15with his mother. So completely had the nymphs
- 14:17concoction done, its work. There was always a big fish
- 14:21swimming about in the palace on its back.
- 14:23There was a cushion of sea green satin embroidered with lovely
- 14:26pearls. This is your riding horse, so
- 14:29the water nymph to Francisco. The first day, he had seen it.
- 14:32If you should ever get tired of the palace and find life here, a
- 14:35bit monotonous, just Mount his horse and write about for a
- 14:38little. The water nymph had chicken out
- 14:40her long Massey Tresses so that they covered as much as possible
- 14:43of the fishtail. She had instead of feet She was
- 14:47very sensitive about the fact that she had no feet upon which
- 14:50to wear the pretty little slippers.
- 14:51Like those of the maiden, she had seen so often, as they
- 14:54called out the gay, greetings to the handsome fisher lad.
- 14:58Francisco had smiled into her eyes.
- 15:00How absurd? He cried to think of such a
- 15:03thing as getting tired of this wonderful place.
- 15:07In fact, the days had slipped by all too fast for the happy
- 15:10youth. Then it suddenly happened one
- 15:12day. While the water nymph was asleep
- 15:14that he thought of his mother, the little house, which had been
- 15:17his home for more than 20 years and the fishing boat, which was
- 15:20his pride and joy. The moonlit night when he had
- 15:23gaily kissed, his mother's cheek and gone away, never to return.
- 15:28Do not stop to waking the sleeping nymph, he said no word
- 15:31to the Servants of the palace, he thought only of the fish with
- 15:34the cushion of the sea green satin embroidered with rare
- 15:37pearls. Quick.
- 15:40He cried to it, take me home as fast as you can.
- 15:43My mother's heart is breaking. She has shed so many tears for
- 15:46me. I know that by this time, she
- 15:48might be entirely blind. In another hour, Francisco was
- 15:52safe at home with his mother's arms around him, she had shed,
- 15:56so many tears that her eyes were swollen, almost shut, but they
- 15:59were not close, so completely that they could not shine with
- 16:02the Great Joy. Once more felt in her heart,
- 16:05Promise me. One thing she said to him, give
- 16:08me your word that you'll never go fishing.
- 16:09Again, I don't trust that water nymph even in the daytime.
- 16:14Accordingly Francisco gave up being a fisherman and became a
- 16:17hunter to make his spirits. He gathered all the young
- 16:20saplings which grow on the hillside, even down to the edge
- 16:22of the water. He had grown still more handsome
- 16:25while he lived in the Palace of the mother of pearl in the
- 16:27depths of the sea, and there were twice as many pretty
- 16:30maidens. Cast smiling glances in his
- 16:32directions. It was the daughter of the rich,
- 16:36man of the village. What?
- 16:37Last one, the heart of Francisco when he went to wooing.
- 16:41However, he had no gift take except for the birds.
- 16:43He had killed with his own hand. The rich man, laughed at him.
- 16:47These were his words. When my daughter marries, it
- 16:51shall only be to a youth. Who can bring a rich gifts?
- 16:55Francisco went away with a sad heart and sat upon the rocks at
- 16:58the edge of the sea gazing out over the water with.
- 17:00I so full of tears that they saw nothing.
- 17:04The water nymph was not far away from the shores of those days.
- 17:07She was always seeking for a glimpse of the jet black head,
- 17:10which she had so often crowned with flowers.
- 17:14Or join. Now at the sight of him was
- 17:15buried by her sorrow. When she saw that, his heart was
- 17:17full of Woe. She at once knew the cause of
- 17:20his grief. The next morning, when Francisco
- 17:24went to get wood to make a new spear, he found a necklace of
- 17:27Priceless. Pearls lying on the shore.
- 17:29It was a gift of the water nymph, but since his heart had
- 17:32been touched by his mother's tears, it entirely forgotten her
- 17:37he took the gift to the maid, he loved and never thought to give
- 17:40her the end. I thought the first story was
- 18:13kind of cute while still a bit gory.
- 18:16It made me think about the little bean getting bounced
- 18:18around in the goat. In the wolf, I felt a bit bad
- 18:21for the goat and the Wolf especially the goat that wasn't
- 18:24even eaten. It was just thrown out in the
- 18:25street. Still it was cool that the
- 18:28little guy got his pops so rich. And in the second story, I'm
- 18:32glad Francisco was able to Wed the person he wanted to.
- 18:35I tweaked the story just a little bit, but left the pot
- 18:38alone. It was all about blond hair,
- 18:40blue eyes, blond hair, blue eyes, blond hair, blue eyes so I
- 18:43changed some stuff around and also the boys age in the story
- 18:47was 14. I was like ooh, let's not get
- 18:51into 14 year olds, let's make him 20, I can imagine the water
- 18:54nymphs longing for the handsome man, while at the same time,
- 18:57pull of his mother's love. Also had an effect on him.
- 19:00My mom had Waited for a long time, just for me to be home and
- 19:03now I'm just waiting for my wife to join me in Michigan.
- 19:06Editor's note? I am currently recording this
