- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So I'm sure this happens to you all the time.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: But and it happens to me enough.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: I'm walking down the street, just walking down the street, minding my own business.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And then one of our super fans tracks me down.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Alexis, I met her today.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: She's like one of our big fans, you know, bigger than normal.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Like super fan.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: But but she recognized her voice.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she just, yeah, I guess.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and and then I find out really she's a super fan of Satchel's pizza, because she's she lived in Gainesville.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: And then um and all she wanted to talk about was like satchel, satchel, satchel.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And and I was, and you know, how well do you know Satchel?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And I was trying to, you know, give her everything I knew, and I was like, Do you know his backstory?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And she was like, No, I don't, but I'd really like to know.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: And I tried to tell her a little bit, and then I realized that I don't really have all the information about like your jobs before, you know, how did you get from do you feel like you did you at that time you it became clear that you did not know me as well as you thought you knew me?
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Is that what happened?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: No, because I know you on a deeper level, but I don't know you on like like I know parts of stories, right?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, like yeah, like and and so part of and maybe the stories that I'm telling are more like fantastical and magical than they really were, you know.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I hope so.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Well, like I think I you know, I said, you know, he used to live, he used to live like on the roof of a pizza store.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: She's like, what?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I think I have that right.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And so so I guess she was like, I want to know.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: So let's just do it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Like, give me the six-minute version of your interesting backstory pre-Satchels Pizza.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And I don't mean I was an eight-year-old boy and I learned how to like as an adult, and and you can bounce through the the not interesting parts, but when it gets to like you know, living on a rooftop, um, that's interesting.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And we so your fans want to know, so go.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Um well, and this is for Alexis.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: It is, yeah.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Well, you see, this is like one of the worst questions you could ever ask me.
- 2:46unknown: Right.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Because I have spent the last 24 years answering this question.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, now you're breaking up.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Every student now you're breaking up.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Every US student.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: All right, hold on.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: So you spent the last what 20 24 years answering this question to every journalism student going through uh, you know, a class.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So I don't know what that means.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: That means it's interesting.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: That means it's interesting for for people.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: So then, so it's just like it's just like uh, what do I how do you answer it?
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Um uh I don't know.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I went to college, then I got a then I got a job at a newspaper, then I did newspaper, had a newspaper out for five years, and I did I delivered newspapers in the snow.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Um, and then that's when I got my first um that's when I got my first chef's knife.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean like what you like help us out here.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: You've now now you've only got four minutes.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Do do just do the quick version.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Well, what's the story about the what's the story that give me the correction on you lived on a roof in a pizza store?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Like what's that?
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that's a better question, easier to answer.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Um I worked at a place where I met Caroline.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: I met Caroline at Leonardo's Pizza in uh downtown, uh kind of like you know, right by campus at the University of Florida for 40 years, right?
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: This pizza place, Leonardo's Pizza.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: So I was uh working there and I met Caroline, who there's a little coffee shop, she was working there, and I'm making pizzas, and then I got involved with uh decorating the dining room, right?
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm building booths, I'm building little stained glass windows uh between tables and hanging lights and decorating, and then um something happened where I got I had traveled, and when I got back, I had I had I didn't my vehicle, I had sold it.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I later bought it back, but I didn't have anywhere to live, so I went to work at the pizza place again, and I and I I they had a flat roof, so I could just go up through the attic onto the roof and sleep on the air conditioner vents with a with a uh sleeping bag, you know.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: And uh and then I ran and then I ran tools up there, electricity, and I started using it as my shop, and I started making uh making furniture.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: And I would I would ray I would put a hole in a piece of plywood and I would put a rope on it, and I would pull it up to the roof, and then I would build something, and then I would lower it down with a rope until the owner caught me pulling a piece of plywood up on the roof, and he uh said I shouldn't that was a liability.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: So he didn't know you were on sleeping on the roof, or he didn't know that you were building things on the roof.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Uh he didn't know I was building things on the roof.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Ah, yeah.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: How long was that?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: How long did you do that?
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Did I live on the roof?
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, probably just, I mean, it was probably like a month of regular living on a roof, and then the next month I got into like turning it into my free shop.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but it it it it worked out good.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Like I, you know, it was fine at the time.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I just figured I bought my van back and I don't know.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I I think I don't know what I did about building things, but I kind of probably moved on to something else.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: And then you lived in the van?
- 6:39unknown: Yeah.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Uh I lived in the van quite a bit, yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: For years.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Uh what did you learn about?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Give us give us your life lessons about about living on the roof and then living in a van.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Like what what did you take from that that made you who you are now?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Life lesson for our for for Alexis.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Uh man, you're asking a tough one.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Like, I think you just are who you are, you know.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: And you do what you do.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know that I'm I I learned something.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: You know, I just follow my dreams, man.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Follow your dreams.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: That's a good one.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Follow my dreams.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And were you were you ever like, man, I live on a roof?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Like, were you ever judging yourself for living on a roof, or are you like, nope, this is the most obvious thing that I should be doing, and I'm absolutely on my path.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, totally.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: It's that.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: It's right because you know, I mean, everything I was doing was in the name of art and like creativity and passion and romance and you know, poetry, and you know, I I as an artist, you want to feel and express everything, and so you're con doing whatever you have to do, and that doesn't look like a job necessarily, you know.
