Transcript
- 0:00Today we are continuing with a new book, Habakkuk, and this
- 0:06Habakkuk is a prophet to the nation of Judah.
- 0:10His time frame came right after the prior one that we did well,
- 0:14Obadiah. There is some question about
- 0:16whether that was longer ago or more recent for Obadiah, but
- 0:23anyway, this is the next one in the sequence of when he was when
- 0:29it was written. And this is about 605 BC, so
- 0:35thousands of years from today. But anyway, I will read what the
- 0:40study guide has as far as the introduction to the book, and
- 0:45then we will get started with a prayer after the introduction.
- 0:49So have you ever wanted to ask God if you're really in control?
- 0:55Why does evil so often win? If so, you'll identify with
- 1:00Habakkuk, who entered into a great debate with God.
- 1:06Now I'm thinking when I hear that, I mean, this is the
- 1:08question everybody asks. A lot of people are like, if God
- 1:14is good, why is there evil? That's a question that people
- 1:17have asked for thousands of years, and I've over time, I
- 1:22believe I understand why. And this book will get us
- 1:26through that as well. And the other thing that I
- 1:28thought of when I read this, who entered into a great debate with
- 1:31God, Job did that also. And again, it was because Job
- 1:37was experiencing evil things, and so he was questioning God
- 1:42because he felt like he didn't deserve it.
- 1:46And it turned out for Job's instance, that Job was actually
- 1:50being tested by God. And it was the spiritual battle
- 1:53that we're told about. It was Satan saying if I do
- 1:57these things to him, he will turn away from you.
- 2:00And God was saying he knew Job's heart and he knew he wouldn't,
- 2:04but he did allow Satan to do these things.
- 2:07And that's a reality that we need to accept, that God does
- 2:12allow us to be tested. And I don't know how often that
- 2:19happens. You know, sometimes when evil
- 2:22happens, it's a consequence. Sometimes it's a testing of our
- 2:25faith. But a testing of our faith is
- 2:28only to make us stronger in our relationship with God.
- 2:31It's when we have that decision, when we have to decide, are we
- 2:34going to reject God at this point or are we going to get
- 2:37closer to God? And I do think, I mean, I
- 2:41personally have experienced that and I didn't know what it was,
- 2:46but that's how I found out what it was by opening the Bible to
- 2:51the Book of Job exactly during the time I was experiencing it.
- 2:56So it was very interesting. A coincidence.
- 2:59Yeah. I don't think things are
- 3:00coincidences anymore, anyway. Continuing in the introduction,
- 3:04Habakkuk, whose name may mean wrestler, grappled with God
- 3:08about questions as relevant today as ever.
- 3:11How can a just God ignore injustice?
- 3:15Why does God allow the wicked to prosper?
- 3:19Can a good God use evil to accomplish his purposes?
- 3:23Habakkuk struggled to understand how God works, but in the end,
- 3:28he became convinced that he could trust God no matter how
- 3:32bleak or confusing the circumstances appeared to be.
- 3:37What was happening During this time?
- 3:39Sin was rampant in Judah. People were worshipping idols,
- 3:43sacrificing their children to Pagan gods, and ignoring God.
- 3:48The wicked king Jehoiakim not only refused to listen to God's
- 3:53prophets, but also burned their writings, arrested several of
- 3:58them, and even murdered one. Jehoiakim foolishly positioned
- 4:03Judah between two warring superpowers, the declining
- 4:08Assyrian Empire and the rising Babylonian Empire.
- 4:13The historical background to the book of Habakkuk is found in
- 4:17Second Kings chapter 23 through 24 and Second Chronicles chapter
- 4:2536. Most prophets spoke to the
- 4:29people of God. It says OK, this is what to look
- 4:32for in Habakkuk. Most prophets spoke to the
- 4:35people on God's behalf. Habakkuk wasn't unique that he
- 4:40spoke to God on behalf of the people.
- 4:44As you read, notice his complaint to God, God's
- 4:48unexpected and unwelcome answer, and the hope Habakkuk finally
- 4:54discovered. So this is going to be an
- 4:58interesting one. And there's a Latin, there's
- 5:01only three chapters in here. I don't know how far we will get
- 5:03in this because there's a lot of things that I will probably talk
- 5:05about, but we will see. Anyway, let's start with a
- 5:08prayer. Dear Lord, please be with us as
- 5:11we read through this. Please let the Holy Spirit give
- 5:14us wisdom, understanding and application.
- 5:19We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So the prophecy that Habakkuk
- 5:25the prophet received here, it starts with Habakkuk's
- 5:29complaint. How long?
- 5:31How long, Lord, must I call for help?
- 5:35But you do not listen or cry out to you violence, but you do not
- 5:40save. Why do you make me look at
- 5:43injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
- 5:47Destruction and violence are before me.
- 5:49There is strife and conflict abounds.
- 5:52Therefore the law is paralyzed and justice never prevails.
- 5:56The wicked hem in the righteous so that justice is perverted.
- 6:01Here's the Lord's answer. Look at the nations and watch
- 6:05and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something
- 6:09in your days that you would not believe even if you were told.
- 6:16I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetus people
- 6:23who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwellings not their
- 6:28own. They are a feared and dreaded
- 6:31people. They are a law to themselves and
- 6:35promote their own honor. Their horses are swifter than
- 6:39leopards, fiercer than wolves. At dusk their cavalry gallops
- 6:44headlong. Their horsemen come from afar.
- 6:47They fly like an eagle swooping to devour.
- 6:52They all come intent on violence.
- 6:56Their hordes advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners
- 7:01like sand. They mock kings and scoff at
- 7:05rulers. They laugh at all fortified
- 7:08cities by building earthen ramps.
- 7:10They capture them. Then they sweep past like wind
- 7:15and go on. Guilty people whose own strength
- 7:19is their God. OK, I'm going to pause right
- 7:23here because this is something over the years that I've been
- 7:27studying the Bible and something that Bible scholars do say also,
- 7:32which I've found I not by many, but I found some that are saying
- 7:37this that are coming more and more.
- 7:39Is that so Babylon. So God is saying, whose own
- 7:44strength is their God, the one that they worship?
- 7:48Now Babylon is, I believe it is this spiritual entity and it may
- 7:57be a mixture of a multitude of evil things that people
- 8:01worshipped back then. And these spirits are eternal
- 8:05beings and they come in by, they are called by different names in
- 8:13different cultures. But if you look into them, you
- 8:17will see there are similarities, ancient Mesopotamia, Babylonian,
- 8:23they are names. We talked about this in prior
- 8:25chapters. There, there is a male entity
- 8:28that is called Marduk or Baal or I guess there's, there's
- 8:36multiple things. And, and I guess a Poly, I don't
- 8:40know, there's a, there's a lot of different entities that are
- 8:43referred to as the male side of things.
- 8:47And I do think it's, I do think it's Satan.
- 8:51And then there's a female side. And it's really interesting
- 8:56because the female side is referenced in a lot of different
- 9:01cultures too. And it's like the Ashtara Inana
- 9:06Ishtar. And if you look at the Queen of
- 9:10heaven, all of those entities where they could perhaps be
- 9:15different things, but the question to me is, are they
- 9:21really something different or is it Satan masquerading as an
- 9:25Angel of light? I we won't know the answer to
- 9:28that until God. You know, someday maybe we'll
- 9:32we'll know about it. But you get into the Book of
- 9:34Revelation and you read about the woman riding on the beast,
- 9:41and the beast is something that comes up out of the abyss.
- 9:44So it's something demonic and it had a past and it has a present
- 9:49and it has a future. So it's something eternal and
- 9:53it's different from the spirit of Babylon.
- 9:56And the Babylon spirit is mystery.
- 9:58Babylon is described as the prostitute, the mother of
- 10:03harlots, the, you know, the abomination.
- 10:05It's idolatry and and basically idolatry and sexual things.
- 10:12And, and it's interesting again that these names, Ishtar, Inana
- 10:18are often kind of androgynous type beings.
- 10:23And I believe that this same spirit is influencing our world
- 10:30today with this whole gender confusion that's happening
- 10:34across the world. And, and I believe it is that
- 10:38spirit of that ancient spirit of Babylon that is working in our
- 10:43world today. And whether it's another evil
- 10:47spirit that's in, you know, that's a an ally of Satan or if
- 10:54it's Satan himself masquerading as something.
- 10:57But these people who worship Babylon, didn't, you know, they
- 11:02had some sort of experience. It wasn't a figment of their
- 11:06imagination or this wouldn't have grown so big.
- 11:08So they were experiencing something.
- 11:11But what they didn't do is they didn't realize that it was evil.
- 11:15They were being deceived, just like today, people who buy into
- 11:19this gender fluidity are being deceived.
- 11:23And I believe it is this ancient spirit of Babylon.
- 11:26And God warns us, you know, to come out of her my people fleet
- 11:30because her sins pile up to the heavens.
- 11:33And there is this ancient entity that I believe is spiritual and
- 11:39this is the God of the Babylonians.
- 11:42And I, you look at who was the God of the Babylonians and it
- 11:44was Marduk. And, and there's, like I said,
- 11:47these names. Look into it.
- 11:49So this, you know, why would God say that?
- 11:53They think it's a God, but it's not.
- 11:55It's an evil entity. So God is answering this.
- 12:00God is clarifying this. And this book was written back
- 12:03in 600 BC. So we have information that we
- 12:07should be using today to realize that what Paul says is true.
- 12:13We battle not against flesh and blood, but against these
- 12:16principalities in the, in the spirits in the heavenly, the
- 12:21spirits of darkness in the heavenly realms.
- 12:23And they do have access to the heavenly realms.
- 12:27But at a certain point, which I don't believe has happened yet,
- 12:31they are cast down because in the Book of Revelation it talks
- 12:34about the dragon who is Satan. You know, his tail sweeps out
- 12:40several of the stars and the stars are representative of
- 12:43angels and sweeps them to the earth with them.
- 12:47They were cast out and there's a period of 3 1/2 years before
- 12:51Jesus returns because it says like woe to the earth because
- 12:54Satan has been cast down and his wrath is coming upon the earth.
- 12:59And that period is 3 1/2 years that this happens, which we are
- 13:05not in. This is going to be like a time
- 13:06period that has never been before and never will again.
- 13:11It's going to be a severe time. So it's a short duration of time
- 13:18compared to eternity, but it'll probably feel like forever for
- 13:21those experiencing it. Anyway, I don't want to get too
- 13:25far into all of that. Let's go back into Scripture
- 13:28again. So Habakkuk has another
- 13:30complaint. He said, Lord, are you not from
- 13:33everlasting? My God, my holy 1, you will
- 13:37never die. You, Lord, have appointed them
- 13:40to execute judgement. You, my rock, have ordained them
- 13:45to punish. Your eyes are too pure to look
- 13:49on evil. You cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
- 13:53Why then, do you tolerate the treacherous?
- 13:57Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more
- 14:01righteous than themselves? You have made people like fish
- 14:06in the sea, like creatures that have no ruler.
- 14:11The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks.
- 14:15He catches them in his net, he gathers them up in his dragnet.
- 14:20And so he rejoices in his and is glad.
- 14:24Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his
- 14:30dragnet. For by his net he lives in
- 14:36luxury and enjoys the choices food.
- 14:40Is he to keep on emptying his net, destroying nations without
- 14:46mercy. So this made me think about the
- 14:51love of the love of money is the root of all evil.
- 14:57Money isn't evil. Money is a tool, but the love of
- 15:03it is what is what gets our priorities out of alignment.
- 15:11And that's what Babylon, if you pay attention to what Babylon
- 15:15does, not necessarily the ancient city, but there's a
- 15:19spirit behind the city. And it says in Revelation the,
- 15:24the mystery Babylon, it, it made wealth for all these people and
- 15:31it does, it does get destroyed. And but it it was behind those
- 15:37who made the merchants rich. And, and so we have to look at
- 15:41this, think about like Hollywood, think about musicians
- 15:45who there are many of them who are, I think Beyoncé even says
- 15:50something takes over her in her music and she's has some very
- 15:57evil things that she does in her music and she's very misguided.
- 16:03So I mean, we should pray for people who are under this
- 16:06deception, who are under the the spell of the spirit of Babylon.
- 16:11And but it does clearly say about how it is connected with
- 16:16with luxury. Even here in Habakkuk's
- 16:19complaint, he's talking about, you know, there's a there's a
- 16:23connection with luxury. Now, God is not against money,
- 16:27but it's the stewardship. It's what we do with our money
- 16:32that God does care about. Does money become our God?
- 16:37Does money, Do we do anything to become more wealthy, to acquire
- 16:42more things? Is that what our focus is?
- 16:45Or do we use the resource, the treasure that God gives and God
- 16:50blesses people with it sometimes as well?
- 16:53Do we use that for the benefit of others?
- 16:56Are we using it the way God would want us to use it?
- 17:00Or are we using it for our own purposes?
- 17:06And that's something I think all of us need to reflect on,
- 17:09especially in the US where we have, you know, we have a a
- 17:15wealthy nation. And I believe we have a wealthy
- 17:18nation because it was established with God as the
- 17:23foundation. And I believe that we still have
- 17:28people who respect God and worship God within the United
- 17:34States. And I believe that if the people
- 17:38come together and pray and and repent, then we can maybe remain
- 17:44as the United States. But if we don't have repentance,
- 17:50I believe that very similar to what happened to God's own city
- 17:56of Jerusalem, where he will reign from, He let the
- 18:00Babylonians conquer it. And I think that's where we are
- 18:03today. If you look at what's happening,
- 18:06there is a religious group that wants to conquer and hates the
- 18:11United States. They actually call the United
- 18:15States the Big Satan, and they call Israel Little Satan.
- 18:21And their goal is to conquer all.
- 18:26And in fact, their Mahdi is the description of what the Mahdi
- 18:32does matches the description of the Bible of what the Antichrist
- 18:36does. And we need to be aware of that
- 18:40because I can see this happening right now.
- 18:43You just have to look in the news of what's happening in the
- 18:45world and you will see this. And something that I want to
- 18:49mention now since I touched on that topic was that the the last
- 18:53book of the Bible was written in 90 AD.
- 18:57And within the Bible it says if an Angel or any other entity
- 19:04comes and tells you a gospel different than what has been
- 19:08preached to you, let them be accursed.
- 19:11So any revelation of something new and different than what's in
- 19:20the Bible has a warning attached to it that it is something from
- 19:26the evil 1. And so any religion that came up
- 19:31after 90 AD that doesn't use the Bible as the the basis of truth,
- 19:38that is deception. And we have to be careful about
- 19:42it because if we are truly close to the time of Jesus's return,
- 19:49he will be separating the believers and the unbelievers.
- 19:55And anyway, I won't get so much on to that.
- 20:01But let's get back to this. Let's see how far we are in
- 20:04time. We have 20 minutes, so I'm going
- 20:07to. Go over the questions and
- 20:10answers from the study guide and and may wrap this up.
- 20:13I don't want to make these too long because people won't listen
- 20:15that long. So let's go.
- 20:17What was prophecy? The Hebrew word for this word is
- 20:21related to a Hebrew verb meaning to lift or carry and is possibly
- 20:27to be understood as either lifting up one's voice or
- 20:29carrying a burden. Such Old Testament prophecies
- 20:33often contained a message of doom.
- 20:36That's why people didn't like it, because it wasn't positive
- 20:38news. Was God ignoring Habakkuk's
- 20:41prayers? Habakkuk may have prayed as long
- 20:44as 12 years for justice without any response.
- 20:48During his wait, Habakkuk learned something about God's
- 20:53timing. God wasn't ignoring His prayer,
- 20:56but was answering it by working behind the scenes where Habakkuk
- 21:00could not see his actions. What should we do when God seems
- 21:04to ignore us? We should persevere in our faith
- 21:08and keep talking to God. We may argue, plead, and reason
- 21:12with God, but we must also listen, reflect, and seek wisdom
- 21:18about His ways. Sometimes we are simply
- 21:21uninformed about what God is doing.
- 21:24In time, if we persevere, we will be amazed at what He has
- 21:28done and be utterly amazed centuries later.
- 21:34The apostle Paul quoted Habakkuk to support his point that God
- 21:38will judge, judge those who reject Jesus in Acts chapter 13
- 21:44verse 41. So I think I had that chapter
- 21:53mentioned here. I don't know.
- 21:55Oh yeah, Acts 1341, He says this verse says, look, you scoffers
- 22:02wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your
- 22:06days that you would never believe even if someone told
- 22:10you. So that's where Paul is quoting
- 22:14and he was talking. Maybe I should read about what
- 22:19Paul was talking about in here, because that is I think I will.
- 22:29So from starting with Acts 13, verse 13, I'm going to read
- 22:37through that on down to the end, I guess.
- 22:41From Pathos, Paul and his companions sailed to Purga in
- 22:46Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.
- 22:50From Purga, they went to Pisidion, Antioch.
- 22:54On the Sabbath, they entered the synagogue and sat down.
- 22:58After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of
- 23:02the synagogue sent word to them saying, Brothers, if you have a
- 23:05word of exhortation for the people, please speak.
- 23:09Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said, Fellow
- 23:12Israel, Israelites, and you Gentiles who worship God, listen
- 23:17to me. The God of the people of Israel
- 23:22chose our ancestors. He made the people prosper
- 23:27during their stay in Egypt. With mighty power, He led them
- 23:31out of that country for about 40 years.
- 23:35He endured their conduct in the wilderness.
- 23:38And He overthrew 7 nations in Canaan, giving their land to His
- 23:46people as their inheritance. I'm going to pause here for a
- 23:49minute. He overthrew 7 nations.
- 23:53I'm wondering, I remember in the Book of Revelation when it talks
- 23:57about the beast and there are 7 heads on the beast, I wonder if
- 24:03these nations are being led by certain principalities or
- 24:08spirits of those areas and this is God's ultimate.
- 24:13You know, they keep coming back. Spirits are eternal, and so
- 24:18they're actually coming back again, but it's interesting that
- 24:20there were seven nations. I just noticed this as I'm
- 24:23reading it right now in Canaan. Giving their land to the his
- 24:27people as their inheritance, continuing on and from Acts.
- 24:31All this took about 450 years. After this, God gave them judges
- 24:38until the time of Samuel the prophet.
- 24:41Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son
- 24:45of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled 40 years.
- 24:50Again, this 40 is like this period of time.
- 24:53It's like a period of time of testing.
- 24:56After removing Saul, he made David their king.
- 24:59God testified concerning him. I have found David son of Jesse,
- 25:05a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him
- 25:09to do. So David was obedient to God
- 25:13from this man's descendants. God has brought to Israel the
- 25:17Savior Jesus, as he promised before the coming of Jesus John,
- 25:24repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.
- 25:30As John was completing his work, he said, Who do you suppose I
- 25:35am? I am not the one you were
- 25:37looking for, but there is one coming after me whose sandals I
- 25:42am not worthy to untie. Fellow children of Abraham and
- 25:47you, God fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of
- 25:53salvation has been sent. The people of Jerusalem and
- 25:56their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him
- 26:01they fulfilled the words of the prophet that are read every
- 26:06Sabbath. Though they found no proper
- 26:09ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him
- 26:12executed. When they had carried out all
- 26:16that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and
- 26:20laid him in a tomb. But God praised him from the
- 26:24dead, and for many days he was seen by those who travelled with
- 26:29him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to
- 26:34our people. We tell you the good news.
- 26:37What God promised our ancestors, He has fulfilled for us their
- 26:42children by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second
- 26:46Psalm. You are my Son.
- 26:50Today I have become your Father. God raised him from the dead so
- 26:57that he will never be subject to decay.
- 27:01As God has said, I will give you the holy and sure blessings
- 27:07promised to David. It is also stated elsewhere, you
- 27:12will not let your Holy one see decay, and that's written in
- 27:16Psalms 16 verse 10. Now when David had served God's
- 27:21purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep.
- 27:25He was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.
- 27:30So the Bible talks about falling asleep and that's what it just
- 27:35always when people die, it's not a permanent death because
- 27:39there's going to be a resurrection that happens.
- 27:41The first resurrection is when Jesus returns.
- 27:44The second resurrection is all of those who rejected Christ,
- 27:48and that will occur 1000 years later according to the Book of
- 27:52Revelation. That's when the dead who
- 27:54rejected Christ, who rejected God, will be raised up from the
- 28:01dead and will be judged. Final judgement so every single
- 28:06person, this is something we should all know.
- 28:10We all were created to be eternal beings.
- 28:15The question is, are we rejecting God or we surrendering
- 28:19to God? Do we identify God as our Lord?
- 28:25Like he said here about David was obedient to him.
- 28:30Are we willing to live by God's laws?
- 28:34That shows God we love him. It doesn't get us into heaven.
- 28:38It just shows God that we love him, that we are obedient, that
- 28:42we respect his laws. That's what obeying the commands
- 28:48that God has given is to God. Jesus is the one who made.
- 28:53He is the Savior. He's the one who made it
- 28:55possible. We can't ignore Jesus and expect
- 28:59to be in God's Kingdom. God's, you know, just as it says
- 29:04in Acts 13, verse 33, you are my son today.
- 29:09I have become your father. And he said another time when
- 29:14Jesus was baptized, he said, this is my son.
- 29:20You know, some whom I'm, I don't know, I can't remember the
- 29:24verses, the actual, actual words, but he was very proud and
- 29:32you know, really, you know, it made, you know, verbally said
- 29:39this, Gosh, I need to look that up.
- 29:41This is my son who I am. I don't know if it's like proud
- 29:44of or something, but he exalted Jesus basically.
- 29:51So going back to the book of Acts, but the one whom God
- 29:55raised from the dead did not see decay.
- 29:58Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that though that
- 30:01through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.
- 30:06That's what Jesus sacrifice did on the cross.
- 30:09It gave us the ability to have our sins forgiven and the
- 30:15ability to receive the Holy Spirit.
- 30:18The Holy Spirit comes through Jesus.
- 30:21Jesus requests the Holy Spirit from the Father and gives it to
- 30:24whomever he wants. That's why Jesus is the way, the
- 30:26truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except
- 30:29through Him. So we cannot reject Jesus.
- 30:32We cannot reject Jesus as the Son of God and expect to be in
- 30:37God's Kingdom because we need the Holy Spirit.
- 30:41Jesus said in John chapter 3 that unless you are born again,
- 30:45born of the Spirit, you cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.
- 30:50So we need the Holy Spirit within us, and that's what Jesus
- 30:54will do. So if we reject or deny Jesus,
- 30:56we don't get the Holy Spirit. So Jesus is very crucial to us
- 31:01being in the Kingdom and we have to remember we are eternal.
- 31:05So God says if you seek me you will find me.
- 31:09So if you have questions about all this, start seeking God,
- 31:12start praying to God, pray to the Father and ask the Father to
- 31:16reveal the Son. Because a lot of people believe
- 31:20in God the Father, but they are not sure about Jesus.
- 31:24So ask God the Father to reveal truth about the Son.
- 31:30And like it says in Scripture, if you seek me you will find me.
- 31:33So God will do it. I believe that continuing in
- 31:37scripture through him referring to Jesus, everyone who believes
- 31:42is set free from every sin. A justification you were not
- 31:48able to obtain under the law of Moses.
- 31:51See, our actions can't do it. We can't get into God's Kingdom.
- 31:56Jesus is the way. Take care.
- 32:00What the prophets have said does not happen to you.
- 32:04And that's where Paul says this. Look, you scoffers, wonder and
- 32:10perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you
- 32:14would never believe even if someone told you.
- 32:19As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the
- 32:21people invited them to speak further about these things On
- 32:24the next Sabbath, When the congregation was dismissed, many
- 32:28of the Jews and devout and and devout converts to Judaism
- 32:34followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them
- 32:38to continue in the grace of God. On the next Sabbath, almost the
- 32:44whole city gathered to hear the word of God.
- 32:49So I will stop there. Actually, I'll just continue on
- 32:54so there's only a few more verses.
- 32:57When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy.
- 33:01They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse
- 33:06on him. This is like how evil works.
- 33:09As soon as you know, people are about to be set free through
- 33:13Jesus, but then evil comes and just heaps abuse.
- 33:18And and I can tell you like my own story that happened to me
- 33:23where when I started seeking bad things started happening to me.
- 33:26And that's where I was pleading kind of like guess like Habakkuk
- 33:30like to God, like why, you know, I'm doing all of this now.
- 33:33Why is this happening? And God answered my prayers
- 33:37where by me opening the Bible to the book of Job, I was being
- 33:42tested and I didn't know, I didn't know about the spiritual
- 33:46realm. I didn't know about the battle
- 33:48between the, you know, darkness and light.
- 33:51I didn't know all that stuff. And so God revealed those things
- 33:56to me when I started seeking him, when I was pleading with
- 33:59him. Like, why is this?
- 34:00Like I had, I wanted to be good, I wanted to be a better person.
- 34:05That's what I was seeking, but I didn't understand, and God
- 34:10revealed those things to me, going back to Acts.
- 34:13For this is what the Lord has commanded us.
- 34:16I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring
- 34:20salvation to the ends of the earth.
- 34:23When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the
- 34:26word of the Lord and all who were appointed for eternal life
- 34:30believed the word of the Lord spread through the whole region.
- 34:34But the Jewish leaders incited the God fearing women of high
- 34:39standing and the leading men of the city.
- 34:42They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and
- 34:48expelled them from the region. Now you have to think about
- 34:51this. Why?
- 34:53Why would somebody do this? Like why would they persecute if
- 34:59this is being offered to people and it's the gift of salvation
- 35:02and it's the entry into God's Kingdom and it's it says why it
- 35:09was jealous because the Jewish people, it was jealousy.
- 35:12The Jewish people had a certain way that they were teaching.
- 35:15This was different than what they had been teaching.
- 35:20They were rejecting it. They rejected Jesus.
- 35:24And so that's that's a part of actually being humble.
- 35:27Like people can reject Jesus and be forgiven.
- 35:31It says that in the Bible, they can reject the Son of man and be
- 35:36forgiven when they come in repentance.
- 35:39They can't be forgiven of the rejection of the Holy Spirit,
- 35:42though the Spirit of God, but they can be forgiven because
- 35:48people, you know, come against these kinds of things.
- 35:51And God understands that. And God is forgiving.
- 35:55He's merciful. And so if people have rejected
- 35:58Jesus in the past, when they, you know, come to know the truth
- 36:04and say, oh, I'm so sorry God for doing this.
- 36:07God Forgives. So it doesn't matter what
- 36:10religion people are. And when they come to know
- 36:14Jesus, if they don't reject him and they feel bad about
- 36:17rejecting him in the past, God Forgives.
- 36:22So continuing on. So they shook the dust off their
- 36:24feet as a warning to them, and they went to Iconium.
- 36:28And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy
- 36:33Spirit. So they were doing the work that
- 36:36Jesus asked them to do and they were filled with joy.
- 36:41Just think about that. They were just rejected, but
- 36:44they had joy. They were filled with the Holy
- 36:47Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit to enter
- 36:51the Kingdom of God and the Holy Spirit Spirit brings all sorts
- 36:55of things. You can read Galatians chapter 5
- 36:58and see that that's part of it, the fruit of the Spirit.
- 37:03So if you you want to know if you have the Spirit, read
- 37:07Galatians chapter 5 because that'll tell you what your life
- 37:11will become like if you have the Holy Spirit or if you are still
- 37:17being guided by the flesh. And there's interesting that a
- 37:21verse came up recently that that we are, we consist of a spirit
- 37:31and a soul and a body. And I was really confused by
- 37:37what's the difference between a spirit and our soul and they are
- 37:43different. So the spirit is our connection
- 37:46to God, the soul is our being. Like in other scripture it says
- 37:50what good is it to gain the whole world but forfeit your
- 37:55soul? So we can be very successful in
- 37:58this world and obtain things. But the most important thing is
- 38:06where is our soul destined? That's the question we need to
- 38:10ask ourselves. That's what we need to get
- 38:13straightened out. In Romans chapter 8, verses 6
- 38:17through 9, it says the mind governed by the flesh is death,
- 38:23but the mind governed by the spirit is life and peace.
- 38:28So again, if you go to Galatians chapter 5, you will see the mind
- 38:31governed by the flesh and what those actions are, and you will
- 38:36see the mind governed by the Spirit, led by the Spirit.
- 38:40So in verse 7, in Romans chapter 8, it says the mind governed by
- 38:45the flesh is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law,
- 38:52nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of
- 38:57the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the
- 39:02realm of the flesh, but are in the realm of the Spirit, if
- 39:07indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.
- 39:12And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not
- 39:17belong to Christ. So this is again reinforcing
- 39:23that we need the Holy Spirit. There's a connection between
- 39:27having the Holy Spirit and having life or having the Holy
- 39:31Spirit or not having the Holy Spirit and experiencing death
- 39:36and death is really like darkness is the separation from
- 39:41God. It's it's eternal torment.
- 39:45If you study it more in the Bible of what that actually
- 39:47means. So it it's a time to really look
- 39:55at ourselves In Matthew 16, verse 26 and and Mark chapter 8
- 40:02verse 36, it says that what good is it for someone to gain the
- 40:06whole world yet forfeit their soul.
- 40:08And Matthew says, what good is it for someone to gain the whole
- 40:11world yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in
- 40:16exchange for their soul? We're going to be placed
- 40:21somewhere and our. Decision about whether we will,
- 40:28you know, surrender to God. Basically let God be the Lord of
- 40:32our life. Let the Holy Spirit lead us.
- 40:34If we don't let the Holy Spirit lead us, we're destined for
- 40:38darkness. So anyway that I think that oh,
- 40:45actually I didn't complete all of the questions and answers
- 40:48because we got started on Acts chapter 13.
- 40:51So I'll continue on. Why would God include ruthless
- 40:55and impetus Babylonians in this plan?
- 40:58Because God is sovereign, He can use all things, even great evil,
- 41:02intentionally done by people to work out His loving purposes for
- 41:06the world. Calamities that come our way or
- 41:10that we ourselves cause are providentially woven into God's
- 41:15plan. Who were the Babylonians?
- 41:19Babylonia was a nation northwest of the Persian Gulf in modern
- 41:23Iraq. The Babylonians rose to power
- 41:26between 6:12 and six O 5 BC, conquering both the Assyrian and
- 41:30the Egyptian empires in the process.
- 41:34They were ruthless in their quest for power.
- 41:36Still, as bad as they were, God used them to correct Judah.
- 41:41In 586 BC they conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the temple,
- 41:45and took people into captivity. Can people be appointed by God
- 41:52without being aware of it? Certainly many of us has have
- 41:56been surprised to learn that God chose us for a specific task,
- 42:00our mission. Often we see God's work in us
- 42:03long after the fact. We must be open to being
- 42:07commissioned by God to do His work in the world.
- 42:11God has a purpose each and every one of us, and when we let the
- 42:15Holy Spirit lead us, we start to enter into that purpose.
- 42:20Why would God use wicked people to do His own work?
- 42:24God is sovereign over all things, even the wicked.
- 42:28He was sovereign over the Babylonians, even though they
- 42:30did not know Him, and He used them for His purposes in the
- 42:34world. Still they were responsible for
- 42:37what they did. The Babylonians were ordained to
- 42:41punish. Judah eventually became so
- 42:44greedy for violence and destruction that God turned that
- 42:47very destruction against them. Why would anyone worship a net?
- 42:53The net symbolized power. A fisherman used a net to
- 42:56encircle an area so no fish could escape.
- 42:59Since no nation could escape the Babylonians, some ancient
- 43:03artwork pictures their enemies captured in fishnets.
- 43:07The proud Babylonians worshipped their own strength, military
- 43:12power became one of their gods. And that's the end of the
- 43:17questions. Well, no, there's one more.
- 43:19So does God use evil to do good? When Habakkuk asked God to end
- 43:25the corruption in Judah, he didn't expect God to do it using
- 43:28such severe discipline. True, King Jehoiakim and his
- 43:33cronies had grown wealthy by injustice and extortion, even
- 43:39enslaving their own people and arrogantly burning the writings
- 43:44of Jeremiah, another prophet who pleaded for justice.
- 43:47But if Judah was bad, the Babylonians were worse.
- 43:50Their Chariots and horsemen trampled defenders.
- 43:53Their armies laid siege and starved cities into submission.
- 43:59Their soldiers raped their victims, even torturing pregnant
- 44:04women and infants. I want to pause here because
- 44:07what happened on October 7th, 2023 matches this description.
- 44:14And if my theory is correct about the Babylonian Spirit
- 44:19guiding people and deceiving people, then the Babylonian
- 44:24spirit was alive and active in Hamas and this is exactly what
- 44:32they did. You can, you can find this stuff
- 44:34out like they are finding infant formula that was not given to
- 44:40the people of Gaza and was put into warehouses by Hamas.
- 44:47It was kept away from people, so people who were not receiving
- 44:52the goods that were sent to them by other nations.
- 44:54There's a lot of evil here. The soldiers, the people that
- 44:59you know, broke through the fence on October 7th, 2023.
- 45:04They did rape their victims and they tortured pregnant women and
- 45:09infants. There is one account, I mean,
- 45:12they videoed this stuff too, so it, it's, you know, I guess
- 45:16verifiable. They even put a baby in an oven
- 45:21and baked a live baby in front of the mother.
- 45:24That's one of the things. There was another account of a
- 45:28soldier actually cutting open, you know, womb and now.
- 45:38So this is exactly what it said that Babylon did.
- 45:44Now this army of destruction was coming towards Judah.
- 45:47This was God's justice. So again, I really think that
- 45:51Hamas is the spirit of the Babylonians.
- 45:54Eventually, God enlarged Habakkuk's vision.
- 45:57Habakkuk saw that God is in control even when it appears He
- 46:02is not. God directs peace people and
- 46:05nations, often without their knowledge, for his good
- 46:08purposes. When evil comes, it may be God's
- 46:12judgement on people's sins. But God's severe judgement, like
- 46:17a surgeon's scalpel, works not to hurt but to heal.
- 46:23Similarly, people may intend to harm us and appear to succeed,
- 46:28but God may intend for good to accomplish his sovereign
- 46:33purposes. Ultimately, God does what he
- 46:36commands us to do. Do not be overcome by evil, but
- 46:42overcome evil with good. That's from Romans chapter 12
- 46:47verse 21. So we just finished chapter 1 of
- 46:50Habakkuk and our next time we will go into chapter 2.
- 46:55It's just there's so much in here that applies to us today
- 46:59and points of reflection. So if this was helpful to you,
- 47:04please subscribe and please share this with other people.
- 47:08It's so important for us to stay in the Word.
- 47:11There's so much horrible stuff that we see in the news today,
- 47:14and we need to keep grounded in Scripture.
- 47:17We need to keep our eyes focused on Christ and get through all of
- 47:22this. So please join me every day as I
- 47:25try to get in the Bible.
