Speaker 3: little bit later on the show to talk about the

Speaker 3: morning this morning too, with the loss of the great

Speaker 3: Capitol High football coach Roger Jefferson. We're going to talk

Speaker 3: to welcome to the show now our good friend, doctor
• 2:18
Speaker 3: Casey Sachs of Bridge Valley Community and Technical College. Good morning,
• 2:21
Speaker 3: and welcome to the show.
• 2:23
Speaker 5: Good morning, Dave. Great to be with you today.
• 2:25
Speaker 3: Great to have you here. We've had you on twice
• 2:29
Speaker 3: a month for the last few years. I guess to
• 2:31
Speaker 3: talk about all the good things going on at Bridge Valley,
• 2:33
Speaker 3: but at little sad news this morning. Good news for you,
• 2:36
Speaker 3: sad news for us. You're gonna be leaving your post
• 2:40
  Speaker 3: at Bridge Valley.
• 2:41
Speaker 5: Hopefully good news for America. I'm going to the US
• 2:44
Speaker 5: Department of Education, all.
• 2:46
Speaker 3: Right, So you're gonna be leaving Bridge Valley. But as
• 2:49
Speaker 3: you said, I couldn't said any better myself. Good news
• 2:51
Speaker 3: for America because you're going corporate. You're going federal, I
• 2:54
Speaker 3: should say, not corporate, you're going to federal. Would did
• 2:57
Speaker 3: you come to Bridge Valley?
• 2:59
Speaker 5: So I've come to West Virginia twice to work in
• 3:02
Speaker 5: higher education. The first time was in twenty sixteen where
• 3:05
Speaker 5: I was with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission,
• 3:08
Speaker 5: and then I came back and they hired me at
• 3:10
Speaker 5: Bridge Valley as the president in twenty one.
• 3:12
Speaker 3: Okay, and what's You've done? So many great things you
• 3:16
Speaker 3: and your entire administration at Bridge Valley. What's the one
• 3:18
Speaker 3: or two things that you're probably most proud of?
• 3:22
Speaker 5: So I'm really proud of our nursing program. We have
• 3:25
Speaker 5: the best community college nursing program in the state. Our
• 3:29
Speaker 5: faculty are absolutely incredible. Our inclex pass rates are some
• 3:34
Speaker 5: of the highest that you see even when you compare
• 3:36
Speaker 5: us to four year colleges. We've got amazing business partnerships
• 3:40
Speaker 5: with both CMC and Thomas W. Thomas Hospital through that program.
• 3:44
Speaker 5: I'm really proud of the nursing program. I think the
• 3:47
Speaker 5: other is the Win Academy. It is such an incredible
• 3:49
Speaker 5: opportunity for high school students to earn an associate's degree
• 3:53
Speaker 5: while they're still in high school. There's nothing else like
• 3:55
Speaker 5: it in West Virginia, and it is really special and
• 3:58
Speaker 5: it's something that would be worth hidingplicating across the State, and.
• 4:01
Speaker 3: We're going to talk about the Win Academy coming up
• 4:03
Speaker 3: here momentarily, and then I'll just say one thing about you.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: You've been an absolute pleasure to work with. I mean,
• 4:10
Speaker 3: you're so great at what you do. You're a natural
• 4:13
Speaker 3: on the radio. And the area was certainly better in
• 4:17
Speaker 3: the school at the Academic Institution of Bridge Valley was
• 4:20
Speaker 3: certainly better for having you be a part of it.
• 4:23
Speaker 5: That's such high praise. Thank you very much, Dave. I
• 4:25
  Speaker 5: really appreciate it.
• 4:26
Speaker 3: And talk quickly about this new role what you're going
• 4:28
Speaker 3: to be doing. Then we'll move on to business.
• 4:30
Speaker 5: I'll be the chief financial Officer at the Department of Education.
• 4:33
Speaker 5: So it's really a large operational role there. Even with
• 4:38
Speaker 5: some of the layoffs that have happened, we still have
• 4:40
Speaker 5: two thousand employees at the US Department of Education, and
• 4:43
Speaker 5: so my portfolio will include things like finance obviously, but
• 4:49
Speaker 5: facilities and it and human resources and some of the
• 4:52
Speaker 5: really important functions that just help an organization that's that
• 4:55
Speaker 5: big do its job.
• 4:57
Speaker 3: So when is your last day Bridge Valley going to be?
• 5:00
  Speaker 5: March second?
• 5:01
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well, it's been a pleasure, as I said,
• 5:04
Speaker 3: having you on the show a couple times a month
• 5:06
Speaker 3: and getting to know you and to call your friend
• 5:08
Speaker 3: and all that muschy stuff you're supposed to say. So
• 5:11
  Speaker 3: we'll move on. How's that.
• 5:14
Speaker 5: I appreciate you too, Dave. Thank you very much. It's
• 5:17
Speaker 5: been such a pleasure.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: Let's talk about the Wyn Academy, which you just did.
• 5:20
Speaker 3: You've had some open house to get another one coming up?
• 5:23
Speaker 3: What tomorrow night? I think we do.
• 5:25
Speaker 5: Our next open house is tomorrow night at five point thirty.
• 5:27
Speaker 5: It's been building two thousand in the atrium and it
• 5:31
Speaker 5: should be I mean it's Our open houses are actually
• 5:34
Speaker 5: really fun. We have a lot of current students who
• 5:37
Speaker 5: give tours and who talk to families about what their
• 5:39
Speaker 5: experience has been like. If you're a high school student
• 5:43
Speaker 5: and you think, gosh, I'm really ready to get started
• 5:46
Speaker 5: with my career and to really take classes that apply
• 5:49
Speaker 5: to what it is that I want to do with
• 5:51
Speaker 5: my life, this is a great place for you. And
• 5:53
Speaker 5: if you're an adult who thinks, gosh, I have a
• 5:55
Speaker 5: high school student in my life and they might engage
• 5:58
Speaker 5: more with school. They really cared about it and felt
• 6:01
Speaker 5: like it was meaningful and could help them get a job,
• 6:04
Speaker 5: this is the right place for your high school student.
• 6:05
Speaker 5: We would just love to have you, and you should
• 6:07
Speaker 5: come to the open house tomorrow night at five thirty.
• 6:09
Speaker 3: And you're having this one tomorrow, and I what are
• 6:10
  Speaker 3: the others?
• 6:12
Speaker 5: So we have several open houses coming up that are
• 6:14
Speaker 5: for the college in general, if you are even if
• 6:18
Speaker 5: you're an adult. And I was just talking to our
• 6:20
Speaker 5: student government president. She's a little bit older than I am.
• 6:23
Speaker 5: She's had a career already, she's come back to school
• 6:26
Speaker 5: to be a nurse. And when we were chatting, she said,
• 6:29
Speaker 5: you know, when I came back to school, I was
• 6:30
Speaker 5: a little worried because you think about college students as
• 6:34
Speaker 5: being right out of high school. And it's really important
• 6:37
Speaker 5: to remind everybody who's listening that our average student is
• 6:40
Speaker 5: thirty years old. And most of those thirty year olds, like,
• 6:44
Speaker 5: they've already had a job, they've already had sometimes a career,
• 6:47
Speaker 5: they've had children, they've had marriages, they've had divorces. I mean,
• 6:51
Speaker 5: they've had life happen to them. Yeah, And so even
• 6:55
  Speaker 5: if you're a person who's older than I am and
• 6:57
Speaker 5: you think, gosh, I want to go back to school,
• 7:00
Speaker 5: come back March thirty, first April seventh, April ninth, We
• 7:03
Speaker 5: have open houses all those days. You're also just welcome
• 7:06
Speaker 5: to come in. We would love to have you. But
• 7:08
Speaker 5: sometimes open houses feel a little bit easier for people,
• 7:11
Speaker 5: are more accessible. Not like you're just navigating it alone.
• 7:14
Speaker 5: You've got fifty of your friends who are also coming
• 7:17
Speaker 5: to check it out.
• 7:19
Speaker 3: Are you Are you good with me reading a text
• 7:22
Speaker 3: for you that was sent It's a question about Bridge Valley.
• 7:26
Speaker 3: Sure accurate sex for doctor Sachs. West Virginia seems to
• 7:30
Speaker 3: always follow other stints blueprints. What what's one successful project
• 7:34
Speaker 3: that you've had at Bridge Valley that you would pose
• 7:35
Speaker 3: as a model to the Department of Education.
• 7:39
Speaker 5: So actually I was speaking at a national conference, well
• 7:43
Speaker 5: an international conference recently about some of the cool things
• 7:47
Speaker 5: that we do at Bridge Valley. And one thing that
• 7:49
Speaker 5: the Department of Education has been interested in and that
• 7:52
Speaker 5: I actually got invited to the White House to speak about,
• 7:55
Speaker 5: is how we do shared services here that other states
• 7:58
Speaker 5: and other especially small colleges and rural communities are trying
• 8:02
Speaker 5: to figure out how do we share resources and it's
• 8:04
Speaker 5: something that we've done incredibly well at Bridge Valley. We
• 8:08
Speaker 5: share a financial aid director with two other schools. We
• 8:11
Speaker 5: share a chief information officer and it lead with another school.
• 8:16
Speaker 5: We're sharing a cybersecurity specialist with all of the other
• 8:19
Speaker 5: community colleges, and so we're really trying to find ways.
• 8:23
Speaker 5: Every time we have a vacancy, the presidents call each
• 8:26
Speaker 5: other and say, do you have somebody who could take
• 8:28
Speaker 5: on another school before we try and just fill that role.
• 8:31
Speaker 5: And the efficiency that comes with that and the really
• 8:34
Speaker 5: intentionality of the community colleges working together is a national
• 8:39
Speaker 5: model and really worth replicating in many other places.
• 8:42
Speaker 3: Talk with doctor Casey Saxebridge Valley, but they valanced show
• 8:45
Speaker 3: on five. Indieline brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants.

• 8:58
Speaker 3: Dot net. Helping you understand environment because what you don't
• 9:01
Speaker 3: know can hurt you one of the big buzzwords in
• 9:05
Speaker 3: the world of higher education. The last couple of years,
• 9:07
Speaker 3: doctor Sachs has been cybersecurity. Bridge Rowley just picked up
• 9:11
Speaker 3: a big grant for the cybersecurity program, right we did so.
• 9:15
Speaker 5: Our Chief Information officer, our CIO, recently received a fifty
• 9:20
Speaker 5: three thousand dollars grant. It's a state grant and it's
• 9:23
Speaker 5: through an organization called SISSA. They give out dollars to
• 9:27
Speaker 5: the state and then the state decides what state agencies
• 9:30
Speaker 5: are in need. And so we had written it gosh
• 9:32
Speaker 5: almost a year ago. So sometimes these things take a while,
• 9:36
Speaker 5: but it's they're really worth doing. It means we'll be
• 9:39
Speaker 5: able to We use a few different software platforms to
• 9:43
Speaker 5: help make sure traffic that comes in is safe. We
• 9:46
Speaker 5: use a few different tools to make sure we have
• 9:49
Speaker 5: multiple redundancies, so something that's important as you want a
• 9:53
Speaker 5: backup in more than one place just in case something
• 9:56
Speaker 5: to Heaven forbid, but in case something happens. So it's
• 9:59
Speaker 5: really coming up with what are our strategies around cybersecurity
• 10:03
Speaker 5: and then how do you implement them. And our college
• 10:06
Speaker 5: is unique that we actually have a five year strategic
• 10:09
Speaker 5: plan specifically around cybersecurity to think through what are our
• 10:13
Speaker 5: needs going to be over the next several years. And
• 10:16
Speaker 5: our board has been really proactive in thinking about how
• 10:19
Speaker 5: do we go after funds that are going to support
• 10:22
Speaker 5: those projects because we just really recognize that it will
• 10:25
Speaker 5: only increase in importance.
• 10:27
Speaker 3: You told me you had a video project you were
• 10:29
Speaker 3: working on. Talk about that.
• 10:30
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, so hopefully you saw it. I know I
• 10:34
Speaker 5: sent it to you.
• 10:35
Speaker 3: I did, but I want you to explain it to everybody.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: Okay. So there is a group called Stand Together that
• 10:42
Speaker 5: reached out to us, I don't know about six months
• 10:44
Speaker 5: ago and said, we are really interested in making the
• 10:47
Speaker 5: video to help amplify the good work that's happening at
• 10:50
Speaker 5: the Win Academy. So do you have a student who
• 10:52
Speaker 5: would be interested in being featured in the video, and
• 10:56
Speaker 5: we want to help tell your story. So they sent
• 10:58
Speaker 5: us out a whole videography team. They followed one of
• 11:02
Speaker 5: our students. They followed Caiden in the morning while he
• 11:04
Speaker 5: got ready for work, and then went to the hospital
• 11:07
Speaker 5: to go to work. And it turned out really great.
• 11:10
Speaker 5: Please check out the Bridge Valley Facebook page. It's posted there,
• 11:14
Speaker 5: It's posted on LinkedIn, It's on several several social platforms.
• 11:18
  Speaker 5: Now there's a YouTube channel, but I don't have that
• 11:21
Speaker 5: one memorized. But the video essentially follows Cayden and just
• 11:25
Speaker 5: talks about how incredible his journey has been, and that
• 11:29
Speaker 5: he's going to the Wind Academy, or that he went
• 11:31
Speaker 5: to the Wind Academy and he graduated and now he
• 11:34
Speaker 5: works at WVU Medicine Thomas Hospital, and we're just so
• 11:37
Speaker 5: proud of him and so proud of what he represents,
• 11:40
Speaker 5: but so proud of all of our students who are
• 11:42
Speaker 5: able to accomplish exactly the same thing. While he's special,
• 11:46
Speaker 5: they're they're all special, and they every single one of
• 11:49
Speaker 5: our students is capable of doing this and capable of
• 11:51
Speaker 5: getting a really great job in the community.
• 11:54
Speaker 3: As I said, doctor Sachs, a bittersweet you leaving, but
• 11:56
Speaker 3: I know you're going to do great things, uh in
• 11:59
Speaker 3: your in your new role. We wish you the best.
• 12:02
Speaker 3: We get a pleasure to get to know you and
• 12:05
Speaker 3: talk about all the good things at Bridge Valley, and
• 12:06
Speaker 3: I'm I'm sure of it that our relationship here at
• 12:09
Speaker 3: the Statonwood Bridge Valley will continue. So we wish you
• 12:11
Speaker 3: the best and your future endeavors, and don't forget about us.
• 12:14
Speaker 5: Okay, But I never could thank you so much, David.
• 12:17
Speaker 3: It's such a pleasure, all right. Doctor Casey Sachs, a
• 12:19
Speaker 3: Bridge Valley who will be leaving at Bridge Valley again

Speaker 3: relationship with Jesse Jackson coming up a little bit later
• 12:53
Speaker 3: on in the show. Also here in the Kanawa Valley,
• 12:56
Speaker 3: the world of sports lost a true legend with the
• 12:58
Speaker 3: pasting of Roger Jefferson. We are going to speak with
• 13:00
Speaker 3: some folks from our building that new coach Jefferson very well,
• 13:06
Speaker 3: Fred Pursinger and Dale Cooper who actually played for coach Jefferson.
• 13:09
Speaker 3: That's coming up a little bit later on. We'll take
• 13:11
Speaker 3: a break and come back after This on the Voice

• 13:30
Speaker 6: Dick Durbin. Now Durbin has a new scheme. He's doing
• 13:34
Speaker 6: the dirty work to benefit corporate mega stores. Durbin's bill
• 13:37
Speaker 6: could cut corners on your credit card security, putting your
• 13:40
Speaker 6: personal data at risk. Big chain retailers and warehouse stores
• 13:45
Speaker 6: want to inflate their profits, and Liberal Dick Durbin would
• 13:48
Speaker 6: help them do it. Tell senators say no to the

Speaker 7: about what we do is pretty unique. In Jarrett Construction,
• 14:08
Speaker 7: fake care. They're really really good people. Good people do
• 14:10
Speaker 7: the right thing, and their very skilled. They have all
• 14:13
Speaker 7: the qualities that make up just a perfect construction partner,
• 14:16
Speaker 7: and they just build us a phenomenal building, right.
• 14:18
Speaker 8: On time, right on budget.

  Speaker 8: Good morning.
• 16:03
Speaker 3: Record that that'll be my greeting every morning. Also, we
• 16:06
Speaker 3: had Danny Twilley with us, and this, Danny, here's your title,
• 16:11
Speaker 3: Assistant vice president Economic and Community Development of the brad
• 16:14
Speaker 3: and the Leish Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative. That's a mouthful,
• 16:18
Speaker 3: is that on a business card? And just care around
• 16:20
Speaker 3: poster paper. We appreciate you being here. Thanks today as well.
• 16:25
Speaker 3: Now there is going to be and I'll let you
• 16:26
Speaker 3: guys just kind of jump in here. There is going
• 16:28
Speaker 3: to be an outdoor Economic summit held, talk about it
• 16:32
Speaker 3: and then we'll break it down specifically.
• 16:34
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 16:34
Speaker 11: So, starting this evening all the way through Thursday, we're
• 16:38
Speaker 11: hosting the first annual West Virginia Outdoor Economy Summit, where
• 16:42
Speaker 11: we're bringing uh, you know, anywhere from tourism, economic development,
• 16:47
Speaker 11: nonprofit leaders, land managers, all those who care and love
• 16:51
Speaker 11: the great outdoors of West Virginia. We're bringing them all
• 16:53
Speaker 11: together here for the next few days to kind of
• 16:56
Speaker 11: uh celebrate, elevate, and collaborate.
• 17:00
Speaker 3: That's a lot of aiding there. I like the alliteration there.
• 17:05
Speaker 3: So what's what's your guys role in this with the
• 17:08
Speaker 3: with the CVB and the Alliance and so on and
• 17:10
  Speaker 3: so forth.
• 17:10
Speaker 12: Sure, well, we were just so excited about the summit.
• 17:13
Speaker 12: It's really shows off the best of West Virginia because
• 17:16
Speaker 12: you were were taking the outdoor economy and finding new
• 17:20
Speaker 12: opportunities for the state and existing opportunities, and so the
• 17:23
Speaker 12: Alliance collaborated with Danny and OEDC to help put this on.
• 17:29
  Speaker 12: I mean, it's it's his show. But we're just really
• 17:32
Speaker 12: proud to be a part of it, especially with Susie's
• 17:34
Speaker 12: work in the Upper Canal Valley. We thought this would
• 17:36
Speaker 12: be a great thing to highlight at the beginning of
• 17:39
Speaker 12: a week before the summit, and we're thankful you had
• 17:41
  Speaker 12: us on today.
• 17:42
Speaker 3: And I mean the whole world of the outdoors. I
• 17:45
Speaker 3: mean West Virginia is an outdoor space as state. I mean,
• 17:48
Speaker 3: people come from all over America, but a lot of
• 17:50
Speaker 3: times West Virginians we forget what we have in our
• 17:54
Speaker 3: own backyard, no pun intended. And I'm not hoping that
• 17:56
Speaker 3: this is something that will come out of this summit.
• 17:58
Speaker 3: Today's people here will realize we have here.
• 18:01
Speaker 11: Yeah, I think that's one of the most important things. Right,
• 18:03
Speaker 11: you know, we know that our outdoors attracts people from
• 18:06
Speaker 11: you know, around the country and around the world.
• 18:08
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 18:08
Speaker 11: Secretary Ruby has done a great job over nine billion
• 18:11
Speaker 11: dollars in tourism spending. But we also need to make
• 18:14
Speaker 11: sure that our citizens can make sure that they have
• 18:17
Speaker 11: access to the great outdoors and recognize it is one
• 18:19
Speaker 11: of the critical components for our history and it integrates
• 18:23
Speaker 11: into our quality of life that we have here in
• 18:25
Speaker 11: West Virginia and as you said, sometimes because it's so
• 18:28
Speaker 11: close to us and we're so used to it, we
• 18:30
Speaker 11: sometimes forget how special it is. But it is truly
• 18:33
Speaker 11: some of the best outdoor recreation in the country. We
• 18:36
Speaker 11: have some of the highest density of basically whitewater rivers
• 18:40
Speaker 11: in the entire country, out more than North Carolina and
• 18:43
Speaker 11: more than Civic Northwest. From a mid Atlantic East close
• 18:47
Speaker 11: climbing standpoint, we have some of the highest concentration some
• 18:50
Speaker 11: of the best rock climbing in the entire East East
• 18:53
Speaker 11: coast and the country we can compete in. We have
• 18:56
Speaker 11: some great access to trails, from our rail trails, to
• 18:59
Speaker 11: our water trails, to our mountain bike trails, to some
• 19:01
Speaker 11: of our scenic overlooks. So we really do. And let's
• 19:04
Speaker 11: not forget about the Hatfield McCoy and what they've done
• 19:07
Speaker 11: and the great work that they've done down there and
• 19:10
Speaker 11: particularly in the southern part of the state. And then
• 19:12
Speaker 11: you throw in our wonderful rivers for fishing. We really
• 19:15
Speaker 11: do have it all right here in West Virginia.
• 19:18
Speaker 3: Now, who are you hoping or who's going to be
• 19:20
Speaker 3: coming to this summits at the Coliseum.
• 19:22
Speaker 11: Yeah, like I said, we will have people from this
• 19:26
Speaker 11: you know, various cvbs will have economic development professionals, will
• 19:30
Speaker 11: have land managers, will have other nonprofit leaders. It is
• 19:33
Speaker 11: a really incredible mix of people. And I think I
• 19:37
Speaker 11: can say here is I'm so excited that we have
• 19:40
Speaker 11: sold out the first conference with over three hundred and
• 19:43
Speaker 11: fifty people coming to attend's.
• 19:46
Speaker 3: And that's what makes people at your groups like yours
• 19:49
Speaker 3: happy is when he said people coming in.
• 19:51
Speaker 12: Right, right, And really it's turning those challenges into opportunities
• 19:55
Speaker 12: what we did with a send and the OEDC and Danny,
• 19:59
Speaker 12: the and County are are great partners in this, but
• 20:03
Speaker 12: it's it's attracting people to our outdoor space, Appalachian Outlaw Trails,
• 20:08
Speaker 12: SUSI has done a ton of work in the Upper
• 20:10
Speaker 12: Canal Valley. Just wanted to mention them too. I think
• 20:12
  Speaker 12: they'll be there.
• 20:13
Speaker 3: Right, they will their sponsor yeah as well, and you
• 20:16
Speaker 3: mentioned the ASSINN program. You're with the a SIN program
• 20:19
Speaker 3: as well. Right, Absolutely to talk about that. Explain for
• 20:21
Speaker 3: those it's because it's kind of been you know, it's
• 20:23
Speaker 3: in the news really big. I haven't heard a lot
• 20:25
Speaker 3: about it in a while, So explain how that's going
• 20:27
Speaker 3: and what exactly it is Yeah.
• 20:29
Speaker 11: So one of the things that we recognize is that
• 20:31
Speaker 11: population loss and brain train is one of the biggest
• 20:34
Speaker 11: challenges facing West Virginia. And so we with the support
• 20:37
Speaker 11: of WVU and brad Nelle Smith through the Winged Wing Foundation,
• 20:42
Speaker 11: and the State of West Virginia, we all came together,
• 20:44
Speaker 11: and particularly here in Charleston with the Charleston Area Alliance
• 20:47
Speaker 11: and so many of our great partners came together and said,
• 20:49
Speaker 11: how do we take a challenge and turn it into
• 20:52
Speaker 11: an opportunity. So what we do is we utilize community
• 20:56
Speaker 11: purpose and the outdoors. So we look for people who
• 20:59
Speaker 11: want to build be part of a community and build community.
• 21:02
Speaker 11: We want people who want to come here and help
• 21:04
Speaker 11: make us better. And then we utilize the outdoors to
• 21:06
Speaker 11: attract people here and then retain people here through a
• 21:09
Speaker 11: program called First Descent, which is helping keep our graduating
• 21:13
Speaker 11: students from WVU and Marshall in the state of West
• 21:16
Speaker 11: Virginia when they graduate, and in doing so it helped
• 21:19
Speaker 11: can help reverse that population loss in that brain drain.
• 21:22
Speaker 11: And so the program is just we've had over seventy
• 21:26
Speaker 11: eight thousand applications for the program.
• 21:28
Speaker 3: Seventy eight thousand seventy eight seventy eight thousand. I just
• 21:32
Speaker 3: want to make sure everybody took that into seventy eight thousand.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: Of thelation of Charleston.
• 21:37
Speaker 3: Yeah more, Yeah, seventy eight thousand people have said, this
• 21:41
Speaker 3: is where I want to be.
• 21:42
Speaker 12: We got some big announcements coming up soon for the
• 21:44
  Speaker 12: Charleston area too.
• 21:46
  Speaker 3: It's amazing.
• 21:47
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 21:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, when can we expec those announcements. You don't have
• 21:51
Speaker 3: to tell us now, but can in the coming weeks,
• 21:52
Speaker 3: the coming way, in the coming weeks. All right, So
• 21:56
Speaker 3: let's get back to the summit again. Go over the hours,
• 21:59
Speaker 3: the time times. Yeah.
• 22:01
Speaker 11: So we'll be kicking off tonight around six o'clock for
• 22:04
Speaker 11: just a kind of a award ceremony.
• 22:07
  Speaker 8: Welcome.
• 22:07
Speaker 11: Tomorrow morning at eight thirty, we'll be kicking off and
• 22:11
Speaker 11: it'll go all the way through five. We'll have a
• 22:13
Speaker 11: great celebration at the Capital Market tomorrow and then with
• 22:17
Speaker 11: our partners, the Nature Conservancy, we're doing a day at
• 22:21
Speaker 11: the Capital on Thursday as well. And I'd be remiss
• 22:25
Speaker 11: if I didn't just say to every single one of
• 22:27
Speaker 11: our sponsors, thanks for believing in us, thanks for investing
• 22:30
Speaker 11: in us, and thanks for your support.
• 22:31
Speaker 3: And again I didn't understand that you guys are going
• 22:34
Speaker 3: to be at the capital, as you just said. So
• 22:35
Speaker 3: I'll be excigning because you get legislature in town, you
• 22:37
Speaker 3: get to you get to educate them, just like you're
• 22:39
Speaker 3: educating the listeners. They've got the great things going on here.
• 22:42
Speaker 3: Is there a spot online, website, social media that you
• 22:45
Speaker 3: got that people can learn more about this?
• 22:47
Speaker 11: Yeah, West Virginia Outdoor Economy Summit. Just take a look.
• 22:51
Speaker 11: Type it into Google and it will pop right up.
• 22:54
Speaker 11: You should be the very first one. The team's worked
• 22:56
Speaker 11: really hard to make sure that it shows up first.
• 22:59
Speaker 3: And while we've got you two here, Mara and Susie. Uh,
• 23:02
Speaker 3: What's what's going on with the Alliance these days? Anything
• 23:04
Speaker 3: that you want to push besides this?
• 23:06
  Speaker 12: First of all, a send that's that's a big project.
• 23:09
Speaker 12: Our lift center is under construction. We just picked the
• 23:12
Speaker 12: colors for the metal skin and roof on Friday. Susie's
• 23:18
Speaker 12: got a lot going on in the outdoor economy, wrapping
• 23:21
Speaker 12: up an ARC grant right now.
• 23:23
Speaker 2: We are doing a lot of planning in the Eppercinal Valley, Trails,
• 23:27
Speaker 2: riverfront development, business development. It's been pretty exciting and we're
• 23:32
Speaker 2: hoping to pull together like a progress report at the
• 23:34
Speaker 2: end of this, so it couldn't be happy to come
• 23:36
  Speaker 2: back on.
• 23:36
Speaker 3: Absolutely, you know you're always WelCom I mean, we talk
• 23:39
Speaker 3: to you a lot about window decorating and so during
• 23:41
Speaker 3: Christmas and is going to kick off again? And when
• 23:45
Speaker 3: does that kick off?
• 23:46
Speaker 2: We're going to open up registration within probably the next week.
• 23:49
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, And I think with the winter that
• 23:51
Speaker 3: we've had, I think everybody is thinking about outdoors. Yes,
• 23:55
Speaker 3: outdoors that is not involving risking your life walking to
• 23:58
Speaker 3: your mailbox. You know that's I think everybody wants to
• 24:00
Speaker 3: get outdoors. So guys, I appreciate everybody being here. Danny

• 28:12
  Speaker 8: Oh yeah.
• 28:12

• 28:18
Speaker 3: Jesse Jackson, the Reverend doctor Jesse Jackson. We're gonna spend

• 28:24
Speaker 3: a little bit later on. One of the first things I
• 28:26
Speaker 3: saw I got up this morning, Danny, and I turned
• 28:29
Speaker 3: on the television and I saw where it was coming
• 28:31
Speaker 3: across the screen, and then got my phone with the
• 28:34
Speaker 3: social media and the first thing, because you know, phones
• 28:36
Speaker 3: know what you're thinking. The first thing, the first thing
• 28:39
Speaker 3: I saw was a picture of you that you posted
• 28:41
Speaker 3: of you and Bliet Jesse Jackson.
• 28:44
Speaker 8: That was two thousand and four. Okay, I've been mayor
• 28:48
Speaker 8: a year. That was during the regatta, and somebody asked
• 28:54
Speaker 8: me if I would squire him around. It may have
• 29:00
Speaker 8: been the trades Unions. I can't remember who it was
• 29:04
Speaker 8: that's who sponsored his trip here. And were you mayor
• 29:08
  Speaker 8: at that time?
• 29:09
Speaker 3: Yes, okay, you're maya.
• 29:10
Speaker 8: And we I've been mayor by the year and we
• 29:15
Speaker 8: we hung hung together with him and his group, and
• 29:21
Speaker 8: I can tell you a few stories. You know, what
• 29:25
Speaker 8: do they call those things you get? Elephant ears? Yeah,
• 29:29
Speaker 8: he ate two of them really, and his people the pastries. Yeah,
• 29:33
Speaker 8: his people around around him pulled at me, said.
• 29:37
Speaker 3: Get him away from everybody's got to have handlers.
• 29:40
Speaker 8: Well, they were trying to get him not to eat
• 29:43
Speaker 8: so much, and I think he didn't want to eat
• 29:45
Speaker 8: so much. But but he walked through the crowd and
• 29:52
Speaker 8: we walked down through the uh down down the road
• 29:59
Speaker 8: down to where the where the shown bomb stages.
• 30:04
  Speaker 10: Now.
• 30:04
Speaker 8: We walked down that road. There was some real big
• 30:08
Speaker 8: heavy guy that was laying It looked like he was
• 30:12
Speaker 8: laying drunk, and he was laying down. He had his
• 30:15
Speaker 8: arm hanging over the steps and everything. Jesse's got the
• 30:19
Speaker 8: biggest shick out of that. You know, he laughed, but
• 30:23
Speaker 8: not enough to offer him one of his elephant ears. Right, No,
• 30:26
Speaker 8: but he watched the fireworks. Now, the one thing you
• 30:30
Speaker 8: need to realize about Jesse Jackson is you can ask
• 30:37
Speaker 8: him about your family, about his family. He's not going
• 30:41
Speaker 8: to ask you about yours. I mean, well, Jesse's for Jetsey.
• 30:47
Speaker 8: He talked about himself. He's he was. He drew a
• 30:52
Speaker 8: lot of attention, and a lot of people thought it
• 30:57
Speaker 8: was kind of neat to see him and just wall
• 31:00
Speaker 8: come around saying hello. Despite all the stories about what
• 31:04
Speaker 8: he did when he was young as a waiter, nobody's
• 31:07
Speaker 8: going to tell me he didn't like white people. Because
• 31:11
Speaker 8: the next day he was with all those union folks
• 31:15
Speaker 8: and they were going to a rallying. He was trying
• 31:17
Speaker 8: to get me to come, and I wouldn't. I would
• 31:20
  Speaker 8: I wouldn't come.
• 31:20
Speaker 3: Was he a pretty nice guy though? Oh?
• 31:22
Speaker 8: Very much? Okay, yeah, very much.
• 31:24
Speaker 3: Glad to hear that, because they always say you know that,
• 31:27
Speaker 3: every every and here's the thing, and I've met a
• 31:29
Speaker 3: lot of celebrities of my time as of you. Sometimes
• 31:32
Speaker 3: people say, well, this guy or this person, they were
• 31:34
Speaker 3: a terrible person, they were rude. Whatever. You got to
• 31:36
Speaker 3: remember that when you encounter people you only see him
• 31:39
Speaker 3: on one day, Yeah, and you don't know what's going
• 31:42
Speaker 3: on in their personal life or their business or their
• 31:43
Speaker 3: family or whatever. It maybe has them in a foul mood.
• 31:45
Speaker 3: But the majority of the VIPs that I've met over
• 31:50
Speaker 3: the years, political athletes, singers, actors, whatever, majority of him
• 31:53
Speaker 3: have been pretty cool people. And I talked to some
• 31:56
Speaker 3: people that knew Reverend jack not like they were best
• 32:00
Speaker 3: friends or anything, but but they all said he was
• 32:02
Speaker 3: such a pretty nice guy behind the scenes.
• 32:04
Speaker 8: You never met Paul Anka.
• 32:06
Speaker 3: No, I've never met Paul Anka.
• 32:07
Speaker 8: I'm glad I didn't. He played up at uh Waterford
• 32:13
Speaker 8: up at Chester and he was nice to the to
• 32:17
Speaker 8: the crowd, but to the people that worked there, he
• 32:21
  Speaker 8: was completely nasty.
• 32:23
Speaker 3: There are a lot of stories, yeah like that. There
• 32:25
Speaker 3: are a lot of stories.
• 32:28
Speaker 8: In eighty eight, when I was sheriff, Reverend Jackson was
• 32:35
Speaker 8: running for president and they gave him double secret service and.
• 32:41
Speaker 3: He ran twice. He ran eighty eight and eighty eight, okay,
• 32:44
Speaker 3: and he was up.
• 32:45
Speaker 8: The airport and he had double secret service. Protection cost
• 32:53
Speaker 8: forty grand a day. Michael Dicaccas turned down protection. He
• 33:01
Speaker 8: didn't have any So when he came here, he got
• 33:04
Speaker 8: us State police didn't want him. The city didn't have
• 33:08
Speaker 8: the jurisdiction, so he got the sheriff's department. So one
• 33:12
Speaker 8: day on that on my Facebook, if I outlive him,
• 33:17
Speaker 8: I've got pictures all put up myself and Governor Michael
• 33:22
Speaker 8: Ducaucus because we were with him, and he actually wasn't
• 33:28
Speaker 8: down in the coal mines.
• 33:29
  Speaker 3: I remember that.
• 33:30
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 33:31
  Speaker 5: So, but.
• 33:35
Speaker 8: Reverend Jackson was a really nice guy and he liked people.
• 33:41
Speaker 8: And Willie Nelson was there.
• 33:45
  Speaker 3: I remember. I wasn't in Charleston, but I do remember
• 33:47
  Speaker 3: this now.
• 33:48
Speaker 8: The one thing. Two things I remember about him, Willie, Yeah,
• 33:52
Speaker 8: I just listen to him talk. I didn't talk to him.
• 33:55
Speaker 8: He likes ethanol and he hates Republicans.
• 34:00
Speaker 3: He's very liberal. Yeah, very liberal. I'm going to tell
• 34:03
Speaker 3: some stories a little bit later today. Danny on Metro
• 34:05
Speaker 3: News Midday. When Jesse Jackson was campaigning for president, he
• 34:10
Speaker 3: came for a rally in Logan and I was in
• 34:12
Speaker 3: I was in junior high then. That's how you know
• 34:14
Speaker 3: you're old when you call it junior high, not middle school.
• 34:16
Speaker 3: I was in Logan East Junior High in nineteen eighty four,
• 34:20
Speaker 3: when he was running for president the primary and he
• 34:22
Speaker 3: came to he spent the night in Logan and at
• 34:25
Speaker 3: a place called Mudfork. And I'm going to tell the
• 34:29
Speaker 3: story later today on Metro News Midday. How monumental that
• 34:33
Speaker 3: that was for Jesse Jackson to spend the night in Mudfork.
• 34:37
Speaker 3: I don't want to spoil it, but on the show
• 34:39
Speaker 3: later today, we're going to have on Metro News Miday,
• 34:42
Speaker 3: We're going to talk to Matthew Watts about his memories
• 34:46
Speaker 3: of Jesse Jackson. But I'm also going to talk to
• 34:49
Speaker 3: and he's a frequent guest of the show, Burke Allen,
• 34:51
Speaker 3: who is the guy that got me into all, you know,
• 34:54
Speaker 3: the radio business whatever. Burke's on the show from time
• 34:56
Speaker 3: to time. Burke was a high school order for the
• 35:01
Speaker 3: Here's How Logan High newspaper. It was called Here's That
• 35:04
Speaker 3: still it's called Here's How. And he got an interview
• 35:07
Speaker 3: with Jesse Jackson was junior in high school and he
• 35:09
Speaker 3: got to set down one on one interview with Jesse Jackson,
• 35:12
Speaker 3: which was picked up by the New York Times.
• 35:15
Speaker 8: I can see him doing that, yeah, And I can
• 35:18
Speaker 8: see him some young person walking up to him with
• 35:22
Speaker 8: a pen pen and pad and their wind or just
• 35:26
Speaker 8: a pen and pad? Do you mind a fascis some questions?
• 35:29
Speaker 8: I bet he'd sit right down.
• 35:30
  Speaker 10: He did.
• 35:31
Speaker 3: He actually chose and Burkell tell the story. He actually
• 35:34
Speaker 3: chose Burke over a lot of other people that wanted
• 35:35
Speaker 3: interviews because he thought he liked the the neatness of
• 35:38
Speaker 3: that of just talking to a I guess what have
• 35:40
Speaker 3: been a high school junior at the time.
• 35:42
Speaker 8: When he was he was involved with doctor King and
• 35:48
Speaker 8: he was on the stoop yep of at the Lorraine
• 35:51
Speaker 8: Motel when doctor King was shot in the neck and
• 35:56
Speaker 8: he and oh, I don't know Abernathy and maybe was
• 36:00
Speaker 8: Andrew Young, I don't know who it was. And they
• 36:02
Speaker 8: were pointing where it came from.
• 36:05
Speaker 3: I've seen that, Yeah, very iconic picture.
• 36:07
Speaker 8: They were appointing. They were pointing at where it you know,
• 36:11
Speaker 8: where it came from.
• 36:13
  Speaker 9: And he.
• 36:19
Speaker 8: He was considered I mean, I read everything and get
• 36:23
Speaker 8: my hands on in and when I was in the service,
• 36:26
Speaker 8: that's all I did. And he was considered a little
• 36:29
Speaker 8: bit of a lightweight. He ran for mayor against uh
• 36:34
Speaker 8: mayor Daily in Chicago, and that didn't go over very well.
• 36:39
Speaker 8: And then all of a sudden he just started surging,
• 36:43
Speaker 8: and I think it really manifested itself when he ran
• 36:52
Speaker 8: for president in eighty four. I think it really is
• 36:55
Speaker 8: when things really kicked in for him.
• 36:57
Speaker 3: He had a lot of health issues and it was
• 36:59
Speaker 3: a neurological disease. Is I guess what the official cause
• 37:02
Speaker 3: of death. He's been out of the public eye for
• 37:03
Speaker 3: some time, and I know his offspring and his people
• 37:06
Speaker 3: in his organization continuing to do a lot of his
• 37:09
Speaker 3: work and stuff, but he was just I guess, you know,
• 37:13
Speaker 3: my memories as a younger person, well relatively speaking of
• 37:17
Speaker 3: Jesse Jackson, was it seemed like at one point, whenever
• 37:20
Speaker 3: there was a hot button, and I'm I'm just being
• 37:23
Speaker 3: truthful here, Danny, when there was a hot button, you know,
• 37:26
Speaker 3: issue pretending to race, that you would we would see,
• 37:30
Speaker 3: not always together, but you'd see Jesse Jackson and Al
• 37:33
Speaker 3: Sharpton there. Al Sharpton continues to do some of that,
• 37:36
Speaker 3: although with his health issues and his age, not as
• 37:38
Speaker 3: much as he as he used to. But Jesse was
• 37:40
Speaker 3: always he was always there. I just remember Jesse Jackson
• 37:43
Speaker 3: being on television a whole lot when I was a
• 37:45
Speaker 3: kid growing up in the seventies and eighties, and I don't.
• 37:48
Speaker 8: I don't watch him as NBC too much, so I don't.
• 37:52
Speaker 8: I think he's Sharpton still got to show there.
• 37:55
Speaker 3: I think he does.
• 37:55
Speaker 8: Yeah, he came here when there was a less a
• 38:00
Speaker 8: rate down in Mingo County or somewhere, and of this
• 38:07
Speaker 8: young black girl who the prosecutor down there told me,
• 38:14
Speaker 8: if they hadn't played guilty, I had no case. But
• 38:18
Speaker 8: he got him to plead guilty. He had no case.
• 38:21
Speaker 8: And Malik Shabaz came here. You know, Oh, he trashed
• 38:25
Speaker 8: me big time. What do you say, Oh, I can't
• 38:34
Speaker 8: remember Jerry. At one time, Jerry had posted on Facebook
• 38:39
Speaker 8: it was but he really trashed me. And he didn't
• 38:44
Speaker 8: have any reason to because the first thing, it wasn't
• 38:47
Speaker 8: in this county and I didn't know anything about it.
• 38:50
Speaker 8: And then the young then Sharpton came down and he
• 38:57
Speaker 8: spoke over at first Baptist and to rally for the
• 39:02
Speaker 8: young lady, and he gave them some money and her
• 39:08
Speaker 8: mother took it, took the money and bought dope with it.
• 39:12
Speaker 8: And the girl called back to my office a few
• 39:15
Speaker 8: months later or wanting us to do something for it,
• 39:17
Speaker 8: and we were we couldn't help.
• 39:19
  Speaker 9: Her, and.
• 39:22
Speaker 8: But Malicia Boz really maligu Zu Lusha Baz. I remember
• 39:30
Speaker 8: when he ran for city council and he got beat
• 39:33
Speaker 8: by a white gay Republican, all of which he hates.
• 39:40
Speaker 8: You know, he's amped out all three of those. And
• 39:45
Speaker 8: but he spent a lot of time strutting around here,
• 39:48
Speaker 8: and he did it in this studio. Hoppy was was
• 39:55
Speaker 8: he and Hoppy got into arguments.
• 39:58
Speaker 3: So what do you think the old We're all legacy
• 40:01
Speaker 3: Jesse Jackson will be? Because, as I said, he's been
• 40:04
Speaker 3: out of the public eye for some time because of
• 40:06
Speaker 3: his health issues. But what do you think that legacy
• 40:09
Speaker 3: of Jesse Jackson will be, Denny?
• 40:11
Speaker 8: I think it'll be a blend of SCLC trying to
• 40:16
Speaker 8: get people in movie theaters in the South when they
• 40:20
Speaker 8: when they they couldn't get in. There's actually a video
• 40:24
Speaker 8: of him trying to buy movie tickets in a movie
• 40:27
Speaker 8: theater for a whole line of black folks and they
• 40:31
Speaker 8: wouldn't let him in. Hey, well, I mean he's just
• 40:34
Speaker 8: sitting there talking to the guy, why why won't you
• 40:37
Speaker 8: We have money here? Our money's good. We'd like to
• 40:40
Speaker 8: see the movie. I think that obviously it would be
• 40:43
Speaker 8: in civil rights and can Operation Push, which probably did
• 40:51
Speaker 8: more in the neighborhood in Chicago than it did anywhere else.
• 40:58
Speaker 8: And Chicago needs help, and I think I think that
• 41:05
Speaker 8: would be the legacy.
• 41:07
  Speaker 9: Dan.

Speaker 4: ever shared a studio with Dale Cooper.
• 45:39
Speaker 3: You're talking about football star extraordinary, but Roger Jefferson. Yeah,
• 45:43
  Speaker 3: that's that's obviously a joke, but it is a honor
• 45:45
Speaker 3: to uh to a star that I wasn't play.
• 45:49
Speaker 8: So there you go.
• 45:50
Speaker 18: I have the unique, UH, I have the unique perspective
• 45:52
Speaker 18: of having observed coach Jail on the sidelines for years,
• 45:56
Speaker 18: you know, instead of from the field.
• 45:57
Speaker 3: So yeah, that's I guess that's my perspective on it.
• 45:59
  Speaker 8: Eight.
• 46:00
Speaker 3: Bred talk about the first time you met Roger Jefferson.
• 46:04
Speaker 4: The first time I did. Of course, I think most
• 46:06
Speaker 4: people know. I did Beckley football and basketball for a
• 46:08
Speaker 4: long time, and during those years that Roger was the
• 46:12
Speaker 4: head coach at Capitol, that was my first association with him.
• 46:17
Speaker 4: He became the head coach back in nineteen eighty nine
• 46:20
Speaker 4: and was only there for eight seasons, but every year
• 46:23
Speaker 4: Beckley would play Capital. So the one thing you always
• 46:26
Speaker 4: knew about Roger Jefferson he was going to have his
• 46:28
Speaker 4: teams prepared and they were going to be mean in
• 46:33
Speaker 4: a good way, in a football way. One of his idols,
• 46:36
Speaker 4: and you probably know this, one of his idols, Lee
• 46:38
Speaker 4: On McCoy. Leon McCoy was one of the greatest coaches ever.
• 46:43
Speaker 4: But I put Roger Jefferson certainly in Well for only
• 46:46
Speaker 4: eight seasons, but I still was putting definitely in the
• 46:49
Speaker 4: top ten of high school football coaches in the state.
• 46:51
Speaker 4: You know, Roger, Roger was mostly a wrestling guy. You know,
• 46:55
Speaker 4: he did play football at Marshall, but he was he's
• 46:58
Speaker 4: in fact, he was inducted in to the National Wrestling
• 47:02
Speaker 4: Hall of Fame, So I mean he was. But Roger
• 47:05
Speaker 4: was the kind of guy that, as I was telling
• 47:07
Speaker 4: you earlier this morning, Dave, no matter where I would
• 47:10
Speaker 4: see Roger after he left Capital, after he retired, he
• 47:13
Speaker 4: would always stop and say, Hey, Fred, how's it going man.
• 47:16
Speaker 4: You know, off the field, he was as genuine as
• 47:20
Speaker 4: anyone I've ever known. On the field, he just wanted
• 47:23
Speaker 4: to beat you, and his teams were good. He won
• 47:26
Speaker 4: three state championships during those eight seasons. Ninety five was
• 47:30
Speaker 4: his last one. That he quit in ninety six after
• 47:32
Speaker 4: the ninety six season. But yeah, and Dale, you were around.
• 47:36
Speaker 18: Him, you know, Yeah, Honestly, there's a lot of things
• 47:39
Speaker 18: about Roger that although although I wasn't a top one
• 47:43
Speaker 18: player at all, but what you said about playing hard
• 47:48
Speaker 18: and mean but in a good way is it is
• 47:50
Speaker 18: because there's a difference between and I've played under some
• 47:52
Speaker 18: different coaches on different things, and there's a difference between
• 47:54
Speaker 18: coaches that tell you to get out there and hurt somebody.
• 47:57
Speaker 18: Get out there and you want to make it their
• 47:59
Speaker 18: worst day. You know, you have guys that motivate you
• 48:01
Speaker 18: that way. Jefferson's was much more internalized on that. He
• 48:05
Speaker 18: wanted you to work very hard and he wanted you
• 48:07
Speaker 18: to be as best as you could possibly be within
• 48:10
Speaker 18: the confines of his system. His system was not complicated.
• 48:14
Speaker 18: He called the counter trade the Redskins countertrade that he ran.
• 48:17
Speaker 18: It was he called it joker, So it was Joker left,
• 48:19
Speaker 18: Joker right. That was ninety percent of the playbook. There
• 48:22
Speaker 18: was not no cher he ran other than that. You'd
• 48:24
Speaker 18: have a dive off of the center one way or
• 48:26
Speaker 18: the other if you needed the short yardage. You might
• 48:28
Speaker 18: have a couple of misdirection play but the bread and
• 48:29
Speaker 18: butter of that playbook was Joker left Joker right, and
• 48:33
Speaker 18: you practiced it, and he would give you oculades and
• 48:35
Speaker 18: practice if you did well. If you didn't, then you
• 48:38
Speaker 18: got called on it. And there was things from a
• 48:40
Speaker 18: discipline standpoint that I don't even know where football and
• 48:43
Speaker 18: coaches is today. But like the running the gassers at
• 48:46
Speaker 18: the end of the of practice until you're basically throwing up,
• 48:49
Speaker 18: and frankly, for us beggar guys, he would highlight us
• 48:53
Speaker 18: and we would have to do certain athletic feats, and
• 48:56
Speaker 18: if we failed doing that, that would mean that everybody
• 48:58
Speaker 18: would have to run like he would kind of put us.
• 49:00
Speaker 18: And I think that today that maybe that would be
• 49:02
Speaker 18: frowned upon a little bit. But you know what, it
• 49:04
Speaker 18: was done from such a perspective that it didn't feel
• 49:06
Speaker 18: like anything except for trying to be better at what
• 49:08
Speaker 18: you were doing. And I never felt that there was
• 49:11
Speaker 18: anything other than that there. And although I was not
• 49:13
Speaker 18: a good football player, I felt like playing on that
• 49:15
Speaker 18: team for as many years as I did. Really, I mean,
• 49:18
Speaker 18: my desire for loving defensive football and running the football
• 49:22
Speaker 18: comes from my time at Capitol.
• 49:24
Speaker 4: And while he kept his offenses day as dall As
• 49:27
Speaker 4: saying simples, his bread and butter was his defense, and
• 49:31
Speaker 4: his defense particularly he played that middle linebacker and one
• 49:35
Speaker 4: of the plays I know that he used against Beckley
• 49:38
Speaker 4: was first play on defense. The middle linebacker jumped off
• 49:44
Speaker 4: off sides and hit the at the time he could
• 49:47
Speaker 4: play over the center. He would hit that center. I
• 49:50
Speaker 4: remember hitting Beckley center when you're knocking him five yards back,
• 49:54
Speaker 4: and the guy that was doing color for me, he said, oh,
• 49:57
Speaker 4: that was a mistake, and I said, no, no, not
• 49:59
Speaker 4: a mistake. He just set the tone because he wanted
• 50:02
Speaker 4: you to play tough.
• 50:03
Speaker 18: If I'm not mistaken, Fred, you would probably know this
• 50:06
Speaker 18: better than me from an observer standpoint. But I think
• 50:07
Speaker 18: he did the same thing with Todd Robinson. Robins Tod Robinson,
• 50:11
Speaker 18: but he would blow up that center sometimes drop offside,
• 50:14
Speaker 18: and he was the strongest, fastest guy on the field,
• 50:16
Speaker 18: and he would send shivers down your spine.
• 50:18
Speaker 4: One of the better linebackers in high school. I can
• 50:20
Speaker 4: never remember Todd Robinson. He put Buckley center well five yards.
• 50:25
Speaker 3: Behind the lines in the concession stands.
• 50:28
Speaker 4: Time to go home.
• 50:29
Speaker 3: That's what you know. I was talking to Speedy Bevans
• 50:31
Speaker 3: earlier in the morning, and Speedy and I were talking
• 50:34
Speaker 3: about Roger Jefferson, and he was talking about as a broadcaster,
• 50:38
Speaker 3: when Speedy and the late Bob Weisner would come up
• 50:40
Speaker 3: to call Logan and Capital games. He said, you know
• 50:43
Speaker 3: that about how how gracious that the coach was to them.
• 50:49
Speaker 3: But as Speedy said in that speedy style. He said, well,
• 50:51
Speaker 3: you know, you don't have a lot of stress when
• 50:52
Speaker 3: you're up fifty to nothing at the half, as they
• 50:54
Speaker 3: normally were over Logan, you know, back in the day.
• 50:57
Speaker 3: So you know you're gonna be in a better mood
• 50:59
Speaker 3: about But he talked about it wasn't alone though, Well yeah,
• 51:02
Speaker 3: but you but but he that goes along kind of
• 51:04
Speaker 3: Fred with what you said about how just generally And
• 51:07
Speaker 3: I didn't know the gentleman at all, just knew what
• 51:08
Speaker 3: I read what I heard on the radio that what
• 51:11
Speaker 3: a genuine, just a good person he was.
• 51:13
  Speaker 15: He was.
• 51:14
Speaker 4: He was indeed, uh love his wife Carol, these two daughters,
• 51:17
Speaker 4: had three grandchildren. I mean, just one of those guys
• 51:21
Speaker 4: that you know you didn't like him because he wasn't
• 51:24
Speaker 4: your head coach, you know, right, I mean he and
• 51:27
Speaker 4: you know, I think for just eight seasons is all
• 51:29
Speaker 4: he was there at Capitol.
• 51:30
Speaker 3: What do you do after he retired? What did you do, Premier?
• 51:32
Speaker 3: What kept him? The lost track? I lost track?
• 51:35
Speaker 4: Yeah, sure I would see him, you know, like I said,
• 51:38
Speaker 4: State tournament and basketball, I would see him, But I
• 51:41
Speaker 4: lost track after football, and like you know, I kept
• 51:43
Speaker 4: on him. I was at Backley still six years after
• 51:46
Speaker 4: that after he left.
• 51:47
Speaker 3: So, guys, I appreciate both of you for jumping in
• 51:51
Speaker 3: here today. Fred the voice of high school sports in
• 51:53
Speaker 3: West Virginia and longtime Capitol high standout. He was standing
• 51:58
Speaker 3: standing out by the bench. But hey, like I said,
• 52:01
Speaker 3: you played the game. I didn't. So you were hey
• 52:04
Speaker 3: one up on me. You were a member of the team,
• 52:05
Speaker 3: and he made you feel that way. That's right, That's
• 52:07
Speaker 3: all that matters. And uh, and you took a lot
• 52:09
Speaker 3: of lessons from when I'm when I'm gathered. You took
• 52:12
Speaker 3: a lot of lessons that have absolutely nothing to do
• 52:13
Speaker 3: with football that you use today. But Anthony and I
• 52:16
Speaker 3: are not going to run Gasser just so you know,
• 52:20
Speaker 3: all right, Brad Persinger and Nadel could appreciate you both
• 52:23
Speaker 3: being here. Coming up on the show tomorrow, Millie Snyder
