  [rock music] Tony jammin' already.
• 0:24
Love it. [laughs] Hey, welcome everybody to Full Spectrum Cycling. This is show 263. Hey, Matt Groening. Oh [laughs] Matt Groening? He's right there. Oh, Gates. Matt Gates. Gates. That's it. Yeah, see- That fucker...
• 0:36
no, Matt Groening would be your, uh- Whatever the hell that douchebag's name is... be your Simpson guy, dude. All right. We're in the studio today here. Who? Yeah, who are you? Kevin McCarthy? Right.
• 0:44
He just got the job today. Podcast M-A-T-E. Nice. Like hour, like an hour ago. [laughs] We got JK over there. Hello. On top of all the news. Dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee.
• 0:52
We got, uh, we- we'll talk about the Green Belt later. We got Ton- [laughs] We got Tony. Space in between us, so... We got Cory Baumann. We're back. River West, River West 24's own, uh, bonus checkpoint manager. Manager.
• 1:05
Is that what we decided it was? That's right, manager. All right. That's straight from Jeremy Brett. Yeah. And, uh, in the peanut gallery today we got Ken Keene running away, 'cause I think he got a phone call.
• 1:15
[laughs] And, uh, and we have Carol. Carol. Carol is, is observing if she ever wants to be part of this dumb fuckery that we do here, uh, every single Tuesday. Please do be part of our dumb fuckery.
• 1:29
[laughs] Boy, I don't know. What's going on? Anybody got anything right off the bat? JK? Well, Cory's here. I mean, that kind of has something on the bat. Yeah. [laughs] I know. What's up, brother?
• 1:38
Other than he asked me out of the race- How was your week?... so you can go to some All-Star game. Oh, it's, uh, it's been awesome. Future plans, recorded an album over the weekend. Right on. 10 new songs. Um,
• 1:49
I knocked out almost everything on the first take. Nice. I saw, I saw that you had a wicked nice drum kit for BandLab. Oh my God, the, the drums were incredible.
• 1:57
Shane Hostetler, if anybody's ever gets the chance to work with him- The pictures look pretty cool... it's phenomenal. He's got a great ear for, for music. He's an incredible drummer. He's got really nice drums.
• 2:07
Better than you? Pfft, I don't believe that. He's phenomenal. I don't believe that for a second. Played drums in Call Me Lightning, and, uh- Oh, okay. Well, maybe he is, then... Panagra. [laughs] Just kidding, man.
• 2:19
Some, some other, like Tinteretto, but yeah. So once you, once you record an album like you did this past weekend, how long to master it and to get it actually in people's, uh, hands?
• 2:28
So for the most part we're, we're like halfway through everything. They've gotta go back. We have to reschedule, 'cause they've got a...
• 2:37
We kinda just ran out of time based on ours, but we've got, they've gotta do a little bit of cleanup, the guitars do, and then we gotta do vocals. Then there's like a, a little bit of a in between before mixing. Um,
• 2:50
Shane likes to have, and this is a really great idea, like just have your chance for like to forget everything you did so you can come in and just like experience everything kind of new. Cool.
• 2:58
So that you can be like, "Okay, yeah, this sounds good. Raise this up, bring this down," whatever.
• 3:03
And then, uh, and then it goes to mastering, and then from there it goes to recording, or to, sorry, the shipping to get pressed, and, um, that is a wild card.
• 3:15
[laughs] Speaking of, speaking of pressing, look what's on the, uh, turntable. Oh, yeah? That looks like a Future Plans to me. All right. I think that's one of your, uh- Yeah, that's-...
• 3:23
one of your, one of your press tests... will it, will it also be of some funky said colors? Um, I don't think so. They look like poop. Well, then screw it. I don't want it. We, uh... So
• 3:34
it's funny, because we talked, the- Those are gorgeous... the, the guy who put it out was like, "Hey, we can do black vinyl and it'll be this much. Or for a little bit cheaper you can get mystery."
• 3:44
And he goes, "And I usually get like a really cool blue or a great orange or whatever." We're like, "Yeah, let's go for it." And we got like three different colors of brown. [laughs] That's okay, though.
• 3:55
One, one of them was more of like a purple-ish, black-ish, kind of like smoke that w- but there was only like 10 of them, so we all kept those.
• 4:03
And then I've got the other four that are for- So those are gonna be worth major money down the road... for special- Yeah, for very special VIP people.
• 4:10
So, like, that's probably just the stuff they didn't use in, in a good, a consistent color run. A big run, apparently. They just put it all in the hopper and go, "Here you go." Yeah, apparently. Yeah.
• 4:19
[laughs] The color didn't- Wait- The color didn't test well at the c- uh, Crayola factory, right? You, you had all those weird colored bottles. Oh, right, right, right. Yeah. Uh, water bottles. Who was that?
• 4:28
That was from, uh, Velocity. Velocity would suddenly just produce a bunch of- So, yeah, so-... just crazy colored bottles... what those came from is when they were changing the color, they don't clean the mold.
• 4:38
They just keep running it until it goes from- [laughs] So there's 50 of them that would be weird colored... right.
• 4:42
Yeah, it goes from like orange, and then it's orange-ish blue, and then whatever, whatever, whatever till it's blue. And then blue. [laughs] So yeah, they, they do.
• 4:49
And they sell them for like 50 cents apiece or something just to, instead of spending all the time to clean the mold, they just run it until it is clean. [laughs] That's kind of genius. Yeah. I like that.
• 5:00
That's kind of genius. Everybody wins. That said, I'm not a big Velocity water bottle cage fan. I'm- But they do hold the bottle, I guess, and they are cheap if you get the mystery- Do they hold a can of beer?...
• 5:11
the mystery beard. Uh... Let's see. That's all I'm concerned about. They hold a, they hold a water bottle. Maybe a can of beer and a koozie. There you go. That's all I need. Maybe. Silo. Silo. Silo.
• 5:22
Uh- Get it shook up real nice. Yeah. All right. So Cory's actually here in official capacity today as, uh, River West 24 bonus checkpoint manager and archivist, I believe. It's true.
• 5:33
Uh, one of the, the checkpoints, for those who are listening, if, who have participated in the 24, uh, I'm gonna give it away. It is the River West 24 Museum. If you've got anything to donate,
• 5:48
uh, keep an eye on our River West 24 social media.
• 5:52
Drop off, uh, it, they might, they might be closing it by the time this comes out, but I'm hoping that they're gonna do one more shot depending on how much stuff that they get.
• 6:02
But you can drop it off at the Jazz Gallery, so keep your eye open for that. I know that I donated a bunch of stuff. Uh, I know that other organizers have dropped things off.
• 6:11
And, uh, but there's a, there's a lot of more, like, individual, you know, teams always put together shirts, and- Mm-hmm... you know- So-... you get a- My onesie? Like Richard Gere's. Yeah, your onesie. Your onesie.
• 6:23
[laughs] Not doing it. It's a romper. It's not a onesie. You get, I mean, and everything, and in this- It's a men's romper. It's a romper... it is a jaunty romper is what, what's, uh- And it's not like a donation.
• 6:32
It's a, it's a loan. Yeah. You'll get it back in August. So Jazz Gallery- Oh, well, I might do it then... if you're a Mil- Yeah, you'll get it back at the end of August...
• 6:37
if you're a Milwaukee person, you may not even know where Jazz Gallery is. No separation anxiety, right? It's on Center and Wheel or Bremen? No, Center and Wheel. Wheel. So is right. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yes. Right on.
• 6:50
Yeah, right. Across the street from the vendor that sells stripper gear. It's a very sexy store if that's what you're saying. Yeah. Right. Yep. I was looking for goldfish sho- [laughs]...
• 6:58
with a goldfish in the heel shoe the other day. Yeah, those are nice. And did you find them? No. Oh. I didn't go in there either though, 'cause I'm afeard. I'm afeard of going in there. I, I'm not going in there.
• 7:05
[laughs] By appointment only, which if- There- I always say- [laughs] That just gives an extra layer. [laughs] That sure does. Yeah. Yeah. It's like... Yes, I wanna go to the sexual store by appointment only. Only.
• 7:15
There's one on- [laughs] There's one out on, on the way to my mom's house, too. It's somewhere out on, I don't know, Beloit or something. But it's not like a tool shed where you can get toys for fun.
• 7:26
It's more like a, a, a store for gears that you can perform in. [laughs] I don't wanna go to... Well, I do go to the toy shed. I don't know. We're not gonna talk about that.
• 7:34
[laughs] Um, well- Molly don't listen to this show... so, uh, the, the, uh, the Riverwest 24 Museum will have- 17 years... propaganda. Speaking of propaganda, did anybody see my shirt? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Horrible.
• 7:51
The Horrible City. [laughs] I swear to God he came out- The Milwaukee flag... with this thing, like, 12 hours after- Yeah. Sold out, yeah... 12 hours after the, the t- the, the thing, it, he had the shirts already out.
• 8:04
Yeah. Ready to go. Good for him. So he made a screen. That's called entrepreneurial shit. He made a screen. He screened some shirts, and then he put them up, and people were like, "Yeah, I'll take some of those."
• 8:14
That's a great shirt. Yeah. Oh, the week is almost over. I would get one. [laughs] I'd get one, too. I, at some point- Except for I'd have to wear- I would have to wear it to work...
• 8:22
I'd have to wear it to work, and then people would be like, "You gotta take your shirt off." Yep. I'm like, "Do you really wanna see this naked?" [laughs] Well, you- I'll do it, but do you wanna see this naked?
• 8:28
You can't wear a shirt, so it's any kind of- No. It's not political. No political m- statements at all. It's not political. It's not political at all. What are you talking about?
• 8:36
It's a horrible- You can read between the lines... it's a horrible city. Yeah. [laughs] I didn't really- Oh, my God. I'm really just starting to think Riverwest is a horrible neighborhood. But oh- Oh...
• 8:44
we're not gonna get into that right now. Does Riverwest have a logo? Maybe it should. It... I don't know. No? Horrible Riverwest shirt? I... right down the pike. Horrible neighborhood. Cool.
• 8:55
Uh, other bonus checkpoint, uh, news? We've got 40, well, 48 total. The tattoo is, is back in swing. We've got a house, thank you. How much, how much is the tattoo this year? I'm assuming it's 48.
• 9:13
I believe that's what it's been in the past few years. It was 60 last year. Oh, well, then maybe it's 60. Yeah. I don't know. [laughs] I don't, I don't book anything. I just...
• 9:21
Here you go, and- Yep, go in there and- Yeah... set that up. Yeah, I just, I just make sure that they've got a house, and that I find a couple volunteers, and then they- A house with power? Yeah.
• 9:30
That's w- that was my dilemma when they did it at my house. And they just run it however they run it. If it's 60, it's 60. I... when it first started, it was 24. I know. And then it was 48. I, I have them all.
• 9:40
Now it's 60. You do, too? I do, too. It was kind of fun. I still randomly run into people and be like, "Hey, where'd you get that tattoo?" Oh, yeah. We were talking about that on the last one.
• 9:50
They're like, "Uh, some abandoned house." I'm like, "No." You was talking about not getting one this year. I don't think I'm gonna get it this year. You're, you're a stick in the mud this year.
• 9:58
I am a stick in the mud this year. Yeah. I'm really down with the- Yeah, Tony Berger, Riverwest hater. Yeah, I'm- I am down with the 53212 right now. You know what? That should've, that should've been your team name.
• 10:07
Yeah. To- Tony the Hater. That could've been that. W- what, uh, what is our team name this year? Oh, I have them all. Um, they're all over- Oh, Carol's Eyeball and Tony's Leg. Yeah. [laughs] There's some there.
• 10:21
There's some there. There's some there. There's some back here. So what's the official number now? 13 is the current number? Tattoos? Yeah. Uh, 16? 15. I think this year it'll be 15. 15. This year will be 15, but...
• 10:35
So okay, so you have 14. Yeah. I have 14 of them. Yeah. Guess how many I have again? Zero. Zero. You're correct. Uno. [laughs] There it is. My house. [laughs] That was a scabs year. I love it.
• 10:45
And then, um, we've got a, a ton more... Like, the first years that people rode, if, if you won, you know, like your, your team busted its ass for 24 hours, you would, like, split a six-pack and get, like- I did then.
• 10:58
Yeah. And, and then it'd, you know, maybe, like, a- Ice trophy. Yeah, you get a six-pack... pound of coffee from Colectivo. Or I'm sorry- Yeah, and that'd be it... pound of cloc- coffee from- From Fuel... Altera.
• 11:08
Or Altera, okay. Yeah. Sold, sold the name, but not the, uh- And then, uh-... the business... well, the one year where, that we won, the
• 11:17
bag said Colectivo, but it was a sticker, and if you peeled it off, it said Altera [laughs] behind it. Yeah, that was funny. It was right before they sold out to Hershey? Ne- yeah, Nestle or Hershey or somebody. Nestle?
• 11:29
Maybe Nestle, yeah, when Colectivo, when, when those guys became billionaires instead of millionaires, so. I think if you go to Atlanta and go to some hotel that's all hoity-toity, you get Altera- Yeah...
• 11:39
like- Commercial, like-... pods-... commercial pods... to put in, to put in your coffee pot. [laughs] Fuck you guys. Sorry. So, um- Hey, are you against people making money or what?
• 11:48
Uh- And you know what other thing that grinds my gears? Not making money. [laughs] I ever tell you the- Skynet? You ever wonder why a guy'd wanna go ahead and change the name of his company from Altera to Colectivo?
• 11:59
[laughs] I wonder about that all the time. Oh, that's a deep dig. That's a- [laughs] Andy Rooney, a deep pull. [laughs] I loved Andy Rooney. He was the best part of watching 60 Minutes.
• 12:09
[laughs] In fact, he was the only reason- That's true... to watch 60 Minutes ever Yeah, Charles Grodin wasn't bad either. Cool. All right, Cory. [laughs] So 48 bonus checkpoints is 96 laps if you do them all.
• 12:20
That's correct. Right? So- Wow, that's a lot of laps... I don't remember last- Wait, we're not doing the spinner anymore? No. They got rid of that years ago. I thought so. Okay. Too controversial.
• 12:29
Well, that- How about random numbers? It was so random because it didn't, wasn't actually accurate. [laughs] It- How about how many laps did you do?
• 12:35
There were certain numbers that never actually came up because it was so poorly designed. Two... Yeah. All right. It did hit negative one. Uh, we got zero for one that went to cost. You remember that?
• 12:45
No, but I believe it. Pe- people- Well, that was a long ways off the beaten path to go to cost. Yeah, to go all the way to cost, and then they spun it at the end, and it was zero. There were a lot of really...
• 12:54
Especially the dude that ran. Molly sat him down at the next checkpoint and is like, "You need to sit here, have a bunch of water. Maybe let's find you some food." Oh, that guy. Yeah, yeah.
• 13:05
'Cause this guy was, like, ready to go out hard. Yeah, I remember that year. It's like, you need- That guy was running. Yeah, he was- [laughs] So- Now wait, but, I have to say this. My chiropractor, Dr.
• 13:15
Steven, is probably gonna listen to this show. He's also talking about running the River West 24 this year. Ride a fucking bike, dude. He's talking about running? Like, actual- He's a, he's a, a, a ultra runner.
• 13:28
Why do people run? It's so bad for you. Because someone stole their bike. [laughs] He's not the guy that, he's not the guy you hassle on the Locust Street bridge, is it? No, no, I love...
• 13:35
Oh, God, I'd like to kick that guy in the ass. I thought that was your former chiropractor. No, Dr. Steven's a great guy, and he- Well, I just thought that would've been awesome. Yeah. Yeah. No, he, he- [laughs]...
• 13:44
he, he just completed a 100-mile race on foot. Like, someone stole your bike. It took him, like, four hours? Yeah, or something like that, or 24. [laughs] My body is not designed for that impact. So, so my, my 40...
• 13:57
So the, the math with the 48 and the 96, right? It's two points per checkpoint. Yep, yep. So what is it gonna take actually doing laps-wise to be competitive?
• 14:07
Again, it's not a competition, but to be recognized as the person that did the most laps actually riding your bike. I would think, so in the past, I know there was teams that could knock out 100 laps.
• 14:19
So I think if you're somewhere in that 50 to 60 range, you're probably in pretty good shape. Right. So, 'cause- I don't know the, how, because I don't, like, race anymore, I don't even know how competitive things get.
• 14:32
You know, they've knocked out the A squad, where everybody shares one bike. That's gone. Yep, that was fun. That was the best. Um, and then- We won that in 2013 championships. We won that. Yeah.
• 14:41
My BMX team took third place in that one year.
• 14:44
Well, they- And then, um, and then now that they've split it up, there's, you know, the convoy and Perfect Strangers and tandem, and then, is there still, um, male- It's not them. It's us, dude. What's the old guy one?
• 14:56
Male, male and, uh- Female solo... is there solo? Yeah. Is there solo? The solo seems like- And is there still male and female solo? I don't know. I think so. I would think so. Yeah. I think so.
• 15:04
There's geriatric, too, which we're gonna qualify for in... Well, you already qualify. So do you. We seem to be, like, subdivisions- Not... Is it-... in solo when I signed up Yeah...
• 15:11
I was just like, "I gotta- Oh, I do qualify. Cool... I got solo." Cool. Yeah, but, but so does Ken, but, and, and so does Carol. I know. And so, so- We can all do it... JK doesn't. You don't qualify yet, do you? No.
• 15:21
What? You're 52? One. One? One. Well, but what goofs our team up is, like, Damien and Pedro on those guys. Right. So we have to just- Young folks... yeah, we just have to get a team of old folks- Yeah...
• 15:32
and it'll be awesome. So my intention is the same as damn last year, Achilles tendon, uh, contingent. Damn. [laughs] Uh, an hour, uh, a lap an hour. Yeah. For 24 hours. So I should get 24. Mm-hmm. That's my aspiration.
• 15:49
And then do all of the checkpoints? Um, no, that's my one goal is the lap part. I'm looking at you and looking at you and looking at you- The last year we-... and looking at you and looking at you...
• 15:58
the, the bonus checkpoints, if they fall in, they will fall in, and I'm sure they will. But they make up. Last, the last year I participated, I did all... I think at the time it was still 24 bonuses.
• 16:07
I did all 24 bonuses, rode 24 laps. Okay. And at, like, 4:30, I was on my BMX bike. Oh, oh. At 4:30, I was like, "My knees are shot. I'm done." Yeah, that's it. I was like, "Well, I go past 24." Yeah. "I could get 25."
• 16:19
No. "Who cares?" Yeah. "I can sit on this bench and drink." There's a better story to it. [laughs] It seems like a lot more fun. Yeah. Did you use a 20 inch? And safer. You use a 20-inch BMX, right? I use my 20-inch BMX.
• 16:27
Did you- Yeah, there's 24, yeah, there's no 24 inch of the Terror. [laughs] [laughs] There should be, though, 'cause it's kinda hand in hand. Did you have the- Although now it'd be 36...
• 16:36
did you have the, did you have the seat- Oh, 36-beamers... did you have the seat up so you could sit, or were you standing the entire time? I, I had it, no, I had it up enough so that I could sit comfortably.
• 16:43
Was it angled back like that, so you- No... slipped off the back and fell- No... on your back wheel like a lot of BMX seats? No. What's that all about?
• 16:49
When we, when we were- That's not why you have your seat like that... I, I raised it up. I fixed it so I could sit down for those, you know- [laughs]... so I could, like, pop a pill or something. 'Cause you're smart.
• 16:58
Yeah. Was, uh, was Handsome Bob ever on your team? No. What? He was a, he was on our team, so- Are you talking about Elquest? Yeah. Yeah. Handsome Bob.
• 17:06
No, we, we asked him to be on, and, um, and he was all ready to be, and then he had to wear a helmet, and he was like, "Fuck this. I don't wear a helmet. Rah, rah, rah." Yeah, right.
• 17:15
And then, and then- Oh, I thought he got booted off- And so he-... for not wearing a helmet. Yeah, he spent- 'Cause he did the year before... permanently banned from not wearing a helmet. Right.
• 17:21
And then he's like, "I'm just gonna ride around. I'm gonna throw tacks everywhere and hope people just pop their tires." [laughs] You be you, douche. But, uh, he never did, but yeah, he- The funny-... funny guy...
• 17:33
he talks a lot... the funnier part of it. He talks a lot. He's a- Is he vegan? He doesn't act that much. Yeah, that's why his bones snap like nobody's business. Right, right.
• 17:39
Man, holy cow, the guy breaks a elbow a week or something sometimes. [laughs] Ken, Ken, Ken's nodding his head over there.
• 17:46
[laughs] He's just got, he's got m- just absolute gems that come out of- Yeah, he, he's, he's colorful. Oh, I haven't seen him in a while. But he's not grumpy. He's hilarious. Here, JK, g- get a drink.
• 17:55
I'm, give me a minute. [glass clinks] 'Cause we're, we, we've got up there now. Oh, yeah. Top of the hill, everybody. Uh, JK picked our beer of the day, which I forgot it's as good as it is. [laughs] Hell yeah.
• 18:09
This is- I didn't realize it was-... this folks-... the Green Belt Green Belt... is Green Belt- It's totally drinkable... Premium American Lager. It just-... rebranded it or re- There's such a large sign-...
• 18:18
labeled it... for Grain Belt in Minneapolis. Okay. It's, like, humongous. It's right by the river, and it's, it's a very large sign. "Brewed in the heart of America's Grain Belt." Yeah. It's damn good.
• 18:29
Since the 1893 timeframe. It's shockingly- Yeah... drinkable. [laughs] I mean- Yeah. And they have the, uh- It might be at my house during the Riverwest 24.
• 18:38
Not exactly sure where New Ulm is, but is that in the Minneapolis area, or is it...? No, it's not. The one big sign was right in Minneapolis. Yeah. Uh- I remember when we went there for, uh...
• 18:47
What the hell did we go there for? Some Fatbike.com thing. Yeah, there was something going on at, uh, One Up- Yeah... Studio or the- Freewheel. Freewheel... Freewheel. Fre- Freewheel Bike Club. Freewheel Bike.
• 18:58
That was right on that, uh- Uh, when-... Madison Trails Hey, speaking of Fatbike.com-... dirt road... guess what? The new version of the site is actually working now. Hmm. It was down for, mm, probably...
• 19:11
It, I mean, it worked kind of, but the back end didn't really work, so I had to spend about, I don't know, 40 hours fixing it. Uh-oh. That's what seven years lack of maintenance will get you. Ah, it does happen.
• 19:23
And when you suck all the money out of it and don't do any maintenance, that makes you a schmuck. Gomez. [laughs] Naughty. And that's why he's not allowed to play on the site anymore.
• 19:37
[laughs] Are you not supposed to be drinking on this? I guess not. I don't know. Let me- [laughs] I'll read. Um, you can drink on whatever you- "Should avoid prolonged- [laughs]...
• 19:48
or excessive exposure to direct and/or artificial sunlight." Hmm. "May cause drowsiness." Uh, that's usually a good thing. "Do not operate a vehicle- While he's reading the-... or vessel"...
• 20:01
hey, while he's reading the thing, I, I wanna j- did you notice, JK, that Buttermint in Shorewood is closing? Yes, I just ran across that. Is that- 'Cause it's terrible... is that something that affects you at all? No.
• 20:11

The Ca- The, before Klein sued them... Ca- Is that, is that a good-... Cannondale... is 200 a good price on that? That's a really good price for that. I think it's on the low end, actually. Yeah. 1,200. Really?
• 28:04
Well, then maybe I should change that number. I just, so I'm looking at the frame, which- [laughs]... which- It's a really short head tube I was just- Well, he's taking it when he turned it in...
• 28:13
but when he said it was, he's long in the torso, I looked at him like, "Okay, I can see that being a long torso bike." Yeah, but his, there's only that much seat tube sticking out. Right.
• 28:20

• 29:35
It is so gorgeous. [laughs] And I'm betting it's- Just gorgeous... super light. It's just lovely. It's lovely to look at. It is a lovely lass. Isn't it? Mm-hmm. I mean, you know, titanium is light, and that's great.
• 29:47
But it's- But it's also got such a, such a wonderful springy quality when you use it and ride it. It's incredible. It's raw elephant. [laughs] Yeah. Right? That's a good naming.
• 29:57
[laughs] Is that, is that the bikepacking site? Yeah. That's where I found the link, but yeah. Uh, they, they do a good job of covering all sorts of good stuff we don't ever get around to.

• 31:04
100 people get in there. Could've. That's $1,000 right there. $1,000. Yeah, I know. I know how math works, man. 12 bucks at the door. I don't, though. More than 10- That's 1,200.
