- 1:33Speaker 4: with Carl Lee for updates. And today's show is we're
- 1:40Speaker 4: gonna deal in the reclassification of some of the There's
- 1:46Speaker 4: been eleven high schools that has decided to reclassify and
- 1:53Speaker 4: after being after being reclassified. And I'm going to be
- 1:58Speaker 4: open and honest before before we start, because I think
- 2:02Speaker 4: Hollis is gonna know way more on this than than
- 2:05Speaker 4: than I do. But I'm gonna have probably stronger opinions
- 2:09Speaker 4: that may not necessarily align with the facts, possibly, but
- 2:13Speaker 4: just how I how I think about it and how
- 2:16Speaker 4: I view it. So I think if we have the
- 2:18Speaker 4: makings of having a good show and some good discussion.
- 2:22Speaker 4: So Hollis, well, let me just start out by saying,
- 2:26Speaker 4: just let me name some of the teams that have reclassified.
- 2:30Speaker 4: So you have Frankfurt, you have John Marshall, you have
- 2:33Speaker 4: oak Hill, you have Petersburg, you have Preston, you have Sissonsville,
- 2:37Speaker 4: you have Spring Valley, Saint Aubans, Saint Mary's, Tyler Consolidated,
- 2:42Speaker 4: and Wayne.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Yeah, and probably before we begin the discussion, we probably
- 2:47Speaker 5: need to like just give some backstory on kind of
- 2:50Speaker 5: the classification scenarios. So basically what the w V S
- 2:54Speaker 5: S A C.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Did.
- 2:55Speaker 5: They went from a three tier system, so we had
- 2:57Speaker 5: a single A, double A, triple A, and now we
- 3:00Speaker 5: opened up a quada and they moved certain teams based
- 3:05Speaker 5: off of formula to quaida. So basically, excuse me, not quade,
- 3:09Speaker 5: but they moved you up or down based off of formula.
- 3:12Speaker 5: So the formula is such, and I won't get into
- 3:15Speaker 5: too much detail, but the formula is basically how it's
- 3:19Speaker 5: comprised of what classification your specific school would be in
- 3:22Speaker 5: is based off eighty percent of your score is going
- 3:25Speaker 5: to be based off your enrollment numbers, ten percent of
- 3:28Speaker 5: your score is going to be based off of your
- 3:30Speaker 5: proximity to a city of ten thousand or more people,
- 3:33Speaker 5: and then the last ten percent is based off the
- 3:36Speaker 5: socio economics of either the school or the county that
- 3:39Speaker 5: you sit in. So based off those individual factors that
- 3:42Speaker 5: would determine whether you're going to be in class four A, three,
- 3:46Speaker 5: two or one A.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Okay, so let me ask this question because this is
- 3:52Speaker 4: what I remember of how that how you got the
- 3:57Speaker 4: triple A, double A, and single. It's at least in
- 4:01Speaker 4: my mind or in most folks mind that I've talked
- 4:04Speaker 4: to today about this. As you know, as we talked
- 4:07Speaker 4: about having as a discussion on the show, everybody was
- 4:11Speaker 4: pretty much set on the idea of it being based
- 4:16Speaker 4: on school enrollment.
- 4:18Speaker 5: That's from my understanding. The old system, the old metric
- 4:23Speaker 5: was strictly based off of your school enrollment.
- 4:25Speaker 4: And so I think how people are when when when
- 4:28Speaker 4: they're seeing this now like I've seen it, my first
- 4:33Speaker 4: thought process is enrollment and and and and and all
- 4:38Speaker 4: the metrics and all of the all of the things
- 4:40Speaker 4: that you spoke on, like, I don't know, and again
- 4:46Speaker 4: you know more of.
- 4:47Speaker 2: This than I do.
- 4:47Speaker 4: But I'm gonna I'm gonna fight for just the other
- 4:51Speaker 4: side of the people who like are like me, who
- 4:53Speaker 4: are like don't like the system as a whole. I
- 4:56Speaker 4: don't know if the if the metrics that you're putting
- 5:00Speaker 4: together necessarily.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Can because to.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Me, I'm looking at the teams who are winning, the
- 5:08Speaker 4: teams that are that are constantly at the top, and
- 5:13Speaker 4: to me, that's your that's your that's your four A class. Yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know, and then those teams that have been really
- 5:20Speaker 4: pretty good, maybe made playoffs and all that kind of stuff.
- 5:22Speaker 4: I think there and there, there's your triple A and
- 5:25Speaker 4: then there's your double A and single A.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think you you to me, I think it's it's.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Not as hard or doesn't have to be as complicated
- 5:34Speaker 4: and confusing to people as I don't care if it's
- 5:38Speaker 4: if you. If you, if you're in a league and
- 5:40Speaker 4: you're you're four four, four years into a league, five years,
- 5:44Speaker 4: whatever that number would be, and all five of those
- 5:48Speaker 4: years you've been in the top tier of that league.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You're probably where you need to be.
- 5:55Speaker 4: If you're at the bottom of that when in one
- 5:57Speaker 4: or two games, you're probably somewhere that you're But and
- 6:01Speaker 4: I know that there's going to be teams that have
- 6:03Speaker 4: to have that's gonna be at the bottom anyway, just
- 6:07Speaker 4: based on the conference, I.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Think what you're talking like, the system that you would
- 6:12Speaker 5: probably like to see implemented is basically what European soccer does.
- 6:17Speaker 5: So basically what they do they have about I mean,
- 6:19Speaker 5: they have about eighteen different types of league or levels
- 6:24Speaker 5: of leagues, and based off you're winning, that determines whether
- 6:28Speaker 5: you move up or down in that particular league. So
- 6:32Speaker 5: for example, if you're in the bottom league and you
- 6:35Speaker 5: win the championship in that bottom league, then you the
- 6:37Speaker 5: next year you move up. If you win it, you
- 6:40Speaker 5: move But I think the problem with that is that,
- 6:43Speaker 5: again I don't necessarily that's to me, that's not necessarily
- 6:47Speaker 5: a bad thing, but it almost becomes far as in
- 6:50Speaker 5: your initial formulation of those different tiers of leagues, it
- 6:57Speaker 5: becomes almost too subjective, a kind of who goes where.
- 7:00Speaker 5: And I think that you do need an objective metric
- 7:03Speaker 5: to say you're in you're in Triple A, you're in
- 7:05Speaker 5: Double A.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And how we get there. I would agree with you.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I would agree with you, and again to your point
- 7:12Speaker 4: what that metric is.
- 7:13Speaker 5: But let's just let's just look at like Spring Valley.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Who in Spring Valley was in that they got classified
- 7:19Speaker 5: as Triple A, excuse me, a four A and now
- 7:22Speaker 5: they got they did the appeal, and now they're reclassified
- 7:25Speaker 5: back to three A.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Okay, and they now the teams that they were playing
- 7:28Speaker 4: are going to are more than likely.
- 7:31Speaker 2: The teams that they were competing more like in the
- 7:32Speaker 2: four and the four. So the formula and here's a
- 7:36Speaker 2: team who my money who's going to be on them
- 7:38Speaker 2: to win that base? How could you not?
- 7:41Speaker 4: I mean, because you're talking about a team that has
- 7:43Speaker 4: been has had a shot at the state championship.
- 7:46Speaker 2: For three years, three years in a row. Yeah, and
- 7:50Speaker 2: they've been consistently good, consistently good.
- 7:53Speaker 4: And I think when you start looking at those teams
- 7:54Speaker 4: that have been consistently good, how do you how do
- 7:59Speaker 4: you keep them in Triple A and there's a quada?
- 8:02Speaker 4: How do you have them play down and and and
- 8:07Speaker 4: they've been playing the best teams in the in the.
- 8:12Speaker 2: In the state. How I mean, there's something wrong with that.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I mean, and I know that you've got to create
- 8:18Speaker 4: a way or you want to create a way that
- 8:21Speaker 4: seems justifiable or makes sense. But I don't know if
- 8:26Speaker 4: this is the I don't know. I don't I don't
- 8:29Speaker 4: know if this is working for me, and it don't.
- 8:32Speaker 4: And again, they don't care if it works for me
- 8:33Speaker 4: or not. They're gonna do it. But again, this was
- 8:35Speaker 4: a This was this passed because of an appeal. They
- 8:40Speaker 4: there were already people appealing this, already taking this because
- 8:44Speaker 4: they didn't like it. So so clearly I'm not the
- 8:48Speaker 4: only one who who doesn't like it.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think what mainly what they had a
- 8:52Speaker 5: problem with was like kind of again the metrics and
- 8:55Speaker 5: how it will determined what level they would play on it.
- 8:59Speaker 5: And just and just to give clarity, Saint Auban's Spring Valley,
- 9:03Speaker 5: John Marshall, Preston County, ok Hill they moved from quade
- 9:07Speaker 5: back to Triple A, Centonville, Wayne County, Frankwort they dropped
- 9:12Speaker 5: from Triple A back to double A. Petersburg, Saint Mary
- 9:16Speaker 5: Tyler consolidated. They moved from double A to single A
- 9:21Speaker 5: based off the appeal. So those are the schools. Those
- 9:24Speaker 5: are the eleven schools that have made the appeal and
- 9:27Speaker 5: reclassified into essentially lower I.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Thought when I was looking at some of this, I
- 9:31Speaker 4: thought that all the teams, all the teams went down
- 9:38Speaker 4: a level. They all went down a level.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Okay, and and I'm how already moved up. Okay, see
- 9:45Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 9:46Speaker 4: So to me, that's like that that doesn't look on
- 9:50Speaker 4: its face, it doesn't look And.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Let's and let's talk about why do you think they
- 9:57Speaker 5: added I mean, what wis?
- 9:58Speaker 2: I mean?
- 9:59Speaker 5: Because from I read they I think what they wanted
- 10:02Speaker 5: to do is create more parody create more competition, to
- 10:06Speaker 5: create additional champions because obviously if you have a new
- 10:10Speaker 5: quait a level you have, you're gonna have champions throughout
- 10:13Speaker 5: you know, all the sports. So I think the reasoning
- 10:16Speaker 5: was was to say, hey, it's gonna create more parody
- 10:18Speaker 5: and go and create more competition. Do you think that's
- 10:21Speaker 5: Do you buy that? Is that good enough reason?
- 10:23Speaker 2: What? Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna go to basketball. Who
- 10:26Speaker 2: that they've had they were the polypus last.
- 10:29Speaker 4: For Yeah, that's that was kind of where this to me,
- 10:32Speaker 4: I think where this came from. I think there's a
- 10:35Speaker 4: difference though here because a small mistake putting a team
- 10:41Speaker 4: that might not be able to compete in football is
- 10:46Speaker 4: different than it is in basketball. How so, I physically
- 10:50Speaker 4: I think that way, like like you you can't you
- 10:54Speaker 4: can't get wrong. You know, a a double A team
- 10:59Speaker 4: moving up Triple A just because of the metrics fit
- 11:03Speaker 4: and that team is not.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Not physically.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Able to even understand what what that one level up is,
- 11:13Speaker 4: And all of a suddenly your first game you're playing
- 11:15Speaker 4: a championship team that may have been in that level,
- 11:20Speaker 4: A championship team you're moving up and you weren't even
- 11:23Speaker 4: a championship team in your division A lower division and
- 11:27Speaker 4: now you're playing this team.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Yeah, because I think with basketball, to your point, basketball
- 11:32Speaker 5: you're one player away. If you got one guy, yes
- 11:34Speaker 5: you got that can make the difference as opposed to football.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Even if you have that guy still may not make
- 11:39Speaker 5: the difference if you don't have the numbers in the physicality.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Right, And I and and so I think that more
- 11:46Speaker 4: than just looking at a system a process of justification
- 11:53Speaker 4: based off of this school or this school, or where
- 11:56Speaker 4: who they're close to or where they're not close to,
- 11:58Speaker 4: what they're not close to, I don't necessarily have I
- 12:03Speaker 4: don't know if that that means much.
- 12:06Speaker 5: And even with the metrics, like cause, like I said,
- 12:09Speaker 5: like and just to repeat it, you got eighty percent
- 12:12Speaker 5: of you where you determine where you're going to play
- 12:14Speaker 5: at is based off your enrollment, ten percent based off
- 12:17Speaker 5: the proximity to a city of ten thousand more people,
- 12:19Speaker 5: and then the last ten percent is based off socio
- 12:22Speaker 5: economic status of either the school or county. And that
- 12:25Speaker 5: that to me, how do you I don't even know
- 12:30Speaker 5: how you accurately measure all that and then not take
- 12:33Speaker 5: into account the movement that's going on, right, So if
- 12:37Speaker 5: you get a plethora of transfers.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Doesn't that shift the balance of all this anyway? Yeah?
- 12:42Speaker 2: I think so too.
- 12:44Speaker 4: And again when you start talking about, you know, the
- 12:48Speaker 4: economical piece or side to this, well, okay, so if
- 12:55Speaker 4: you look at Capital, where are you? You know, where
- 12:58Speaker 4: are you gonna put them? Where are what are they
- 13:01Speaker 4: close to? You know, what is the social economics of
- 13:04Speaker 4: their community? That that that you're drawing from. You may
- 13:08Speaker 4: be drawing from that community, but you're drawing some absolutely
- 13:12Speaker 4: fantastic athletes.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Is there? Is there? What do you what do you
- 13:18Speaker 2: say to that? What? I mean? What what's that reality
- 13:22Speaker 2: of where you are?
- 13:24Speaker 4: And no matter what you're close to, no matter what
- 13:28Speaker 4: the community has or doesn't have, there are a whole
- 13:31Speaker 4: host of communities that are small black communities that will
- 13:36Speaker 4: produce a ton of nice, pretty good athletes that doesn't
- 13:42Speaker 4: fit in any of these metrics.
- 13:44Speaker 5: And just for just for comparison, like we look at
- 13:47Speaker 5: like a Capital High who got a score of fifty
- 13:50Speaker 5: eight point eight versus Morgantown who got a score of
- 13:54Speaker 5: ninety four point six, and they both be playing in
- 13:57Speaker 5: the Quada level. So well it shows you just kind
- 14:01Speaker 5: of how wide ranging just based off their own metric
- 14:05Speaker 5: as far as you know the scores within a particular division.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Okay, so I'm confused on how that score could be
- 14:14Speaker 4: not generally but just you have that different score, but
- 14:18Speaker 4: you have them in the same league.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's what I'm saying.
- 14:23Speaker 5: So I think if you look at based off what
- 14:25Speaker 5: I'm looking at, like I said, the highest school in
- 14:27Speaker 5: West Virginia as far as the top score would be
- 14:29Speaker 5: Morgantown at a ninety four point six. You had a
- 14:33Speaker 5: musclm as a ninety four point three, and then the
- 14:35Speaker 5: last team in the quade would would be South Charleston,
- 14:40Speaker 5: which would have a score of fifty four point one.
- 14:44Speaker 5: So again those are pretty wide ranging scores. Again, how
- 14:47Speaker 5: these are calculated is still a bit of a mystery
- 14:50Speaker 5: to me. But just based off the information that they gave,
- 14:52Speaker 5: this is what we're working with.
- 14:53Speaker 4: See, this is why, like I don't know if sports
- 14:59Speaker 4: can can be talked about, figured it out, push out
- 15:07Speaker 4: a rule regulation in a room of individuals who who
- 15:15Speaker 4: like the who liked the metrics right, and the metrics
- 15:18Speaker 4: look good to them. I think you I think you
- 15:20Speaker 4: need somebody who's you need individuals who've been in the sport,
- 15:25Speaker 4: because there's because in that no one has taken any account.
- 15:30Speaker 4: There's no metric for safety. This team hadn't won twenty
- 15:37Speaker 4: games in twenty years, okay, And but the metrics fit
- 15:42Speaker 4: and where are they They're they're triple A. They went
- 15:45Speaker 4: from double A to triple A or or triple AD
- 15:48Speaker 4: four A And what are you putting those kids in?
- 15:54Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 15:55Speaker 5: And it's funny you said that about just because I
- 15:58Speaker 5: was listening to something today and it talked about like baseball,
- 16:01Speaker 5: and essentially what it's said is that the metric nerds
- 16:07Speaker 5: have taken the fun out of the game because basically
- 16:11Speaker 5: everything is based off of kind of what the metrics
- 16:13Speaker 5: and the numbers say, has opposed to what's good for
- 16:17Speaker 5: the entertainment value of it. So I think that not
- 16:20Speaker 5: to compare this to that, but I think what we're
- 16:22Speaker 5: seeing in some iterations, even at the high school level,
- 16:26Speaker 5: we're looking at people who are crunching numbers has opposed
- 16:29Speaker 5: to thinking about like maybe the game holistically, you know
- 16:32Speaker 5: what I mean.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Yes, I do, And I think I think you have
- 16:38Speaker 4: to kind of be you know, if this was going
- 16:41Speaker 4: to go on then you should have had coaches.
- 16:45Speaker 2: In the room to.
- 16:47Speaker 4: To have conversations and say hey, I like this, No,
- 16:50Speaker 4: I don't like this. Yes, it's going to be a
- 16:52Speaker 4: big discussion, it's going to be in probably some argument
- 16:55Speaker 4: going on.
- 16:56Speaker 2: But you need these people who know the game.
- 17:01Speaker 4: And I'm not saying that somebody up there doesn't necessarily
- 17:04Speaker 4: didn't play high.
- 17:05Speaker 2: School football or basketball or whatever.
- 17:08Speaker 4: But I'm not even really sure why we even why
- 17:14Speaker 4: we even tried.
- 17:15Speaker 2: To go here.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Okay, but so let me ask you that do you
- 17:18Speaker 5: think this is even needed? Do you think we need classifications?
- 17:21Speaker 2: I don't. Do you think we need maybe less more?
- 17:24Speaker 2: What I would? I think the three.
- 17:26Speaker 4: I think the three classes are plenty because we're not
- 17:30Speaker 4: a for we're not a for a school. We don't
- 17:34Speaker 4: have a for a school. And if it is, it's
- 17:37Speaker 4: it's probably not here in the valley.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:39Speaker 5: And again when you take when you take Saint Albust
- 17:43Speaker 5: Spring Valley, John Marshall, Preston Oak Hill, when you take
- 17:46Speaker 5: them out of the for the Quada classification, I think
- 17:50Speaker 5: that brings Quaide to just under Like, I think you
- 17:54Speaker 5: have about twenty schools in there now, and I think
- 17:56Speaker 5: what they were talking about. So basically, I don't know
- 18:00Speaker 5: if it's going to be twelve or sixteen teams make
- 18:02Speaker 5: the playoffs out of that twenty so basically over half
- 18:06Speaker 5: the schools in the division, even if it's twelve, are
- 18:08Speaker 5: going to make the playoffs.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Well, okay, so let's be honest. Okay, let me be honest. Okay,
- 18:14Speaker 4: that's is that just money?
- 18:17Speaker 2: That's just what I'm saying, that's money.
- 18:20Speaker 5: As a coach, Like I said, if you're coaching the
- 18:22Speaker 5: South Charles Capitol, then maybe I got to win four
- 18:25Speaker 5: games or three games, yes, and I can get it again.
- 18:28Speaker 2: But but do I really want to go in with
- 18:31Speaker 2: four games? I don't personally, you know what I'm saying.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Like anybody who's been a sports person, I can't help
- 18:40Speaker 4: but think that you would cringe if you said a
- 18:42Speaker 4: team that won four games and let's say you played
- 18:47Speaker 4: twelve and you and you you you won four games
- 18:51Speaker 4: or and now you and you make the playoffs. I
- 18:55Speaker 4: don't think any athlete says that they think that's okay.
- 18:59Speaker 5: Yeah, because now your face with the team is probably
- 19:01Speaker 5: gone undefeated. Yes, like I said, and if if you
- 19:05Speaker 5: look at just based off it, we're just looking at
- 19:07Speaker 5: the numbers like they are. If you're looking at the
- 19:09Speaker 5: school with a score of like fifty four versus school
- 19:11Speaker 5: of ninety four, then we're looking at Yeah, when.
- 19:14Speaker 4: You go when you start setting up the playoffs, one
- 19:18Speaker 4: usually one is gonna go against the bottom guy.
- 19:21Speaker 5: And and when that bottom person shouldn't even be there
- 19:23Speaker 5: maybe in the first place.
- 19:25Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 19:26Speaker 4: That's that's the fact in the that and that, and
- 19:29Speaker 4: that's the risk that you're taking from a from a
- 19:32Speaker 4: safety standpoint, and it's not worth It's it's just truly
- 19:36Speaker 4: isn't worth and it's not worth the money. And nor
- 19:40Speaker 4: is it because what's gonna happen is you're gonna get
- 19:42Speaker 4: more kids, even more kids interested in transferring because there's
- 19:47Speaker 4: a whole host of those teams. Yes, because there's gonna
- 19:50Speaker 4: be a whole host of teams that you're not gonna
- 19:51Speaker 4: be that that's not gonna be good, that's not gonna
- 19:54Speaker 4: have a winning record. So now, what what are those
- 19:56Speaker 4: kids gonna do? What are those parents gonna do? They're
- 19:58Speaker 4: gonna send those kids to one of those teams that
- 20:01Speaker 4: are pretty good because they think that they want their
- 20:04Speaker 4: king to be on that side of it. So I
- 20:07Speaker 4: mean I think you're adding everything that's already negative to
- 20:11Speaker 4: the sport.
- 20:13Speaker 2: You're adding it and putting more risks forward.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I don't know's it's a tricky thing.
- 20:21Speaker 5: And like I said, I'm not sure that this is
- 20:24Speaker 5: going to be a good thing. I'm not sure it's
- 20:26Speaker 5: going to be a bad thing. Like I said, I
- 20:28Speaker 5: just don't know, particularly when you talk about the quadity,
- 20:31Speaker 5: I'm not sure. Just I don't know if it creates
- 20:33Speaker 5: more parody, Like I'm just not really sure about it.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Well, and again because of the fact that if if
- 20:37Speaker 4: I remember hearing you right this for this for sure
- 20:42Speaker 4: this season they're going to be playing the same in
- 20:44Speaker 4: the same conferences anyway.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Regardless of being double A, triple A, single A. Also
- 20:49Speaker 2: the compt I didn't really I didn't know that part. Yeah. See,
- 20:53Speaker 2: so I understood that are going to maintain. Yes, eventually, yeah,
- 20:58Speaker 2: they'll change. They'll change it next.
- 21:00Speaker 5: The year after this, husband, So you can have a
- 21:02Speaker 5: triple A double A school absolutely in the same.
- 21:05Speaker 4: And you're playing that's kind of weird if I understood it, right.
- 21:09Speaker 5: So, but even to that point, so looking at it
- 21:11Speaker 5: from the other side, if I am like, let's say,
- 21:14Speaker 5: of Martinsburg. If I am, you know, a higher tier
- 21:17Speaker 5: school who has a good football program, and then in
- 21:20Speaker 5: my own conference, let's say I have to play three
- 21:23Speaker 5: or four double A schools that just happen to be
- 21:25Speaker 5: in the same conference, then I'm that's going to affect
- 21:28Speaker 5: my point totals moving forward.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So I can't afford to drop any of those games.
- 21:31Speaker 5: No, even if we were once competitors and kind of
- 21:34Speaker 5: on a football field standpoint, on the same level.
- 21:37Speaker 2: And so now think about this.
- 21:40Speaker 4: If you're scheduling yourself and you've got like some some games,
- 21:44Speaker 4: you're trying to schedule the out of conference games where
- 21:48Speaker 4: you're going you're going to You're going to a hopefully
- 21:51Speaker 4: A two A or somebody below you.
- 21:54Speaker 2: So you have a chance to win one of those games, Well,
- 21:57Speaker 2: what do you mean if you're the four A. Yeh,
- 21:59Speaker 2: that's but that's the thing.
- 22:00Speaker 5: You can't afford to do that because I mean, they
- 22:02Speaker 5: changed the system last year in which the points are
- 22:05Speaker 5: not going to be as damaging, but still you can't.
- 22:07Speaker 5: I don't think you would want to afford if you're
- 22:09Speaker 5: if you're the team that's gonna win only three, four
- 22:11Speaker 5: or five, maybe five games, you can't afford to have
- 22:14Speaker 5: those wins strict against lower levels and.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Seeing I don't like and and again I don't like
- 22:18Speaker 4: the idea of score being anywhere in the.
- 22:25Speaker 2: In the measurements. But you gotta have a metric.
- 22:27Speaker 5: I know, I get it, but I think that's the tiebreakers.
- 22:30Speaker 5: I don't know if that's like a prime.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Because what that because you're promoting a team.
- 22:34Speaker 4: You're promoting a team who's sees on this on his
- 22:38Speaker 4: schedule that we got that particular team and you got
- 22:42Speaker 4: to run and I'm gonna have to We're gonna have
- 22:43Speaker 4: to run it up because we know what this team
- 22:46Speaker 4: is gonna do.
- 22:47Speaker 2: And so now you got to run it up.
- 22:48Speaker 5: But you but that's the nature to be. I don't
- 22:50Speaker 5: know how you get around that. Like I said, I
- 22:52Speaker 5: just I don't know. And again, not to criticize anybody,
- 22:57Speaker 5: I know, these are difficult jobs. You gotta make tough decisions.
- 23:00Speaker 5: I'm just not sure when we talked about this for
- 23:02Speaker 5: a thing, I'm not sure it was just well thought out.
- 23:06Speaker 5: I'm not sure. And again they tried to use the
- 23:08Speaker 5: metrics other than enrollment. They try to add different things in,
- 23:11Speaker 5: but was there a.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Purpose we I mean was there was there an actual purpose.
- 23:15Speaker 5: I think I think the purpose that they stated was
- 23:17Speaker 5: like to create competitive balance, create parody, to create more champions,
- 23:21Speaker 5: to create more playoff teams, so and again and and
- 23:24Speaker 5: I understand that, but I like, to your point, you
- 23:29Speaker 5: just you just can't factor in the in the in
- 23:31Speaker 5: the metric. That can't be like the only thing to consider, right,
- 23:35Speaker 5: because even the metrics, even though they tried to do
- 23:37Speaker 5: other things, like I said, they factored in enrollment, economic status,
- 23:41Speaker 5: they factored in location, but they didn't factor past wins
- 23:45Speaker 5: and in strength of your previous five years as a
- 23:49Speaker 5: football program. So it's like, and I think that too.
- 23:51Speaker 5: I think that's maybe you factor that in as well.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And and again, And my point then is.
- 24:00Speaker 4: You gotta gotta you gotta think about not just the
- 24:03Speaker 4: metrics that you create or that you think work, but
- 24:07Speaker 4: you got to create a metric that's talking about the
- 24:10Speaker 4: actual physicality of the game and who's who's going against who.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Yeah, because the fact of the matter is, like I said,
- 24:17Speaker 5: if you have a school like Spring Valley, who was
- 24:20Speaker 5: dominated Triple A, who's been a very very good team
- 24:24Speaker 5: the last probably ten to fifteen years, who's been consistently
- 24:29Speaker 5: in the playoffs.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Who's been in a championship game after championship game.
- 24:32Speaker 5: I mean, they're going to a division where they're gonna
- 24:35Speaker 5: play like again, no offense to anybody, but they'll play
- 24:38Speaker 5: schools who have not even dominated in the triple and
- 24:41Speaker 5: single A.
- 24:42Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 24:43Speaker 5: So I said, I don't know if that was considered.
- 24:46Speaker 5: And like I said, I don't know if this formula
- 24:47Speaker 5: was well thought out.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Well, we need to take a we need to take
- 24:52Speaker 4: a quick break.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We'll be right back.

- 26:16Speaker 4: we're gonna I'm gonna we're gonna move away a little
- 26:18Speaker 4: bit from from that battle and maybe more to a
- 26:25Speaker 4: more pleasant value or topic. Watching the Olympics. I'm not
- 26:34Speaker 4: sure for you. And I've watched the Olympics. I thoroughly
- 26:39Speaker 4: enjoy watching the Olympics. I'm not sure if I've ever
- 26:44Speaker 4: enjoyed the Olympics any more this year than I have
- 26:50Speaker 4: any other time. And I don't. And and again I
- 26:54Speaker 4: know we we did some winning and we're gonna talk
- 26:56Speaker 4: about that our our biggest moments and stuff of what
- 26:58Speaker 4: we liked. But what was it that made this particular
- 27:04Speaker 4: Olympic so so exciting, so interesting.
- 27:11Speaker 2: It's funny said that, because I was thinking that exact
- 27:14Speaker 2: same thing.
- 27:14Speaker 5: This was like out of my ear. And I've watched
- 27:18Speaker 5: Olympics my whole life. I watched every single Olympics. I've
- 27:21Speaker 5: never missed an Olympic at least, you know, obviously can't
- 27:24Speaker 5: watch everything. But this was This Olympics was the funnest,
- 27:29Speaker 5: most engaging, most spectacular sporting event that I've seen in years.
- 27:33Speaker 5: And I think maybe it had to do with, uh,
- 27:36Speaker 5: you know, the previous Olympics you had COVID and it
- 27:39Speaker 5: just wasn't even mid luster. Yeah, because I mean you're
- 27:42Speaker 5: talking about track and field events with seventy thousand people
- 27:45Speaker 5: in the stands, You're talking about the swimming events with
- 27:48Speaker 5: you know, forty fifty thousand, the gymnastic events filled to capacity,
- 27:52Speaker 5: you know, and I think they did an excellent job,
- 27:55Speaker 5: you know, with Snoop Dogg and kind of the celebrity
- 27:58Speaker 5: around it, and I think you know it and in
- 28:00Speaker 5: Paris and it just was the vibe of it was
- 28:02Speaker 5: just awesome.
- 28:03Speaker 2: And in addition on it.
- 28:04Speaker 5: On top of all that, just the athletic performances crazy,
- 28:08Speaker 5: the various sports from you know, all the way from
- 28:11Speaker 5: gymnass the track to volleyball to table tennis. It was
- 28:16Speaker 5: just anything short but spectacular. I thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics.
- 28:20Speaker 4: I have and I echo your words, and but I
- 28:25Speaker 4: still can't. I can't put my finger. I don't care
- 28:30Speaker 4: my finger in it because like I'm coming home and
- 28:32Speaker 4: I'm you know, and I'm like, shoot, I know I
- 28:35Speaker 4: missed all day, all right, and I'm watching it repeat.
- 28:37Speaker 2: I'm trying to social media. I'm trying to catch it.
- 28:40Speaker 4: I'm trying to catch the repeat, you know, whatever's going
- 28:43Speaker 4: on at night and then whatever is a repeat, because
- 28:47Speaker 4: I want to see it. And it wasn't like and
- 28:50Speaker 4: it wasn't even like a situation where I was like thinking,
- 28:53Speaker 4: I want to see you know, I'll just catch it.
- 28:56Speaker 2: I can catch a rerun or but I wanted.
- 28:59Speaker 4: To try to catch it as live as I possibly
- 29:01Speaker 4: that's catches in it because I don't want anybody to
- 29:04Speaker 4: have I don't want anybody to say, hey, did you
- 29:06Speaker 4: see that right, because now I'm like, oh, shoot, I
- 29:08Speaker 4: didn't didn't get a chance.
- 29:10Speaker 2: And then you know, track and field is to me
- 29:16Speaker 2: one of the greatest.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Sports that that gets that get it, that gets very
- 29:23Speaker 4: little national attention.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Here they need an event every year. I think so too.
- 29:28Speaker 5: They needed like they need because I because I've made
- 29:31Speaker 5: a post like I can't wait for the World Championships,
- 29:33Speaker 5: I want to watch the Diamond League like I'm all in,
- 29:36Speaker 5: like it's it's truly like it was truly spectacular.
- 29:39Speaker 4: And someone bouts like, like she makes you watch gymnastics
- 29:44Speaker 4: whether or not you you like it, you you know
- 29:48Speaker 4: or or you were male female, like you're watching it
- 29:52Speaker 4: because like she's so spectacular. And then and and well,
- 29:57Speaker 4: let me ask this question, because it's just popped in
- 29:58Speaker 4: my head. So is is it because they situations like her?
- 30:03Speaker 4: Some of these folks are going to be gone or
- 30:05Speaker 4: they may not come back.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Did you know?
- 30:07Speaker 4: Did you did you feel like you knew more people's omics?
- 30:11Speaker 5: And that's actually that's actually a great point because with
- 30:14Speaker 5: someone's about she this is probably gonna be her last Olympics.
- 30:17Speaker 5: With Lebron James, probably Dina Tarassi, this is their last element. Kaylee,
- 30:21Speaker 5: Kaylee Leadecki. The distance of yeah, this could be her
- 30:26Speaker 5: last Olympics. So I think that it was a lot
- 30:29Speaker 5: of build up, and you were familiar with a lot
- 30:31Speaker 5: of faces. This wasn't like a new crop of athletes
- 30:33Speaker 5: per se. Even the track and fields of Shakars, the
- 30:37Speaker 5: brother with the Hunted, we knew all the faces, we
- 30:40Speaker 5: knew all the names. So maybe that added to this
- 30:43Speaker 5: the excitement of the events. Yeah, so you you would,
- 30:47Speaker 5: you would brought up like, what, what were some of
- 30:50Speaker 5: my highlights of it?
- 30:53Speaker 2: My number one?
- 30:56Speaker 4: My number one was Steph Curry. Steph Curry, No one, Yes,
- 31:00Speaker 4: because here's the thing. You see him, you see him
- 31:05Speaker 4: in the NBA. You know he's gonna kill some threes, right,
- 31:10Speaker 4: But there was something about the closest of that game
- 31:15Speaker 4: that it made it feel like it was okay. This
- 31:18Speaker 4: was like maybe just an NBA championship game, and it's
- 31:22Speaker 4: it's game seven, okay, and and everybody's going out to play.
- 31:28Speaker 4: And the guy who shows up, the guy who shows up,
- 31:33Speaker 4: and he shows up not just showing up like a
- 31:36Speaker 4: layup or steal or you know, which are all good stuff, right,
- 31:41Speaker 4: but it was his patent threes. And I'm talking about
- 31:44Speaker 4: d who takes that shot in that critical moment. I mean,
- 31:49Speaker 4: think about the reality of taking a shot like that
- 31:54Speaker 4: in the moment where you know it could go either way.
- 31:57Speaker 4: I mean, that's confidence, man, and you can't I beat that.
- 32:00Speaker 4: You know what.
- 32:02Speaker 5: I was down on basketball this year, like I didn't
- 32:05Speaker 5: really understand. I just women's and the men's because, like
- 32:09Speaker 5: I said to me, there was very little parody. Obviously,
- 32:12Speaker 5: both championship games were good, so once you got to
- 32:15Speaker 5: the to the one that count it was good. I
- 32:17Speaker 5: can't then I watched it the whole game. But just
- 32:20Speaker 5: like I wanted to like see for that sport, I
- 32:22Speaker 5: want to see the new guys. I want to see
- 32:24Speaker 5: the new ladies. I want to see the new faces
- 32:27Speaker 5: in that sport to go against the world.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Like to watch the women.
- 32:31Speaker 5: I mean, bro, they ain't lost the game since the
- 32:33Speaker 5: nineties down there, you know what I mean in international competition.
- 32:37Speaker 5: So to me, it just wasn't it was just but
- 32:41Speaker 5: but the last two games, but they're.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Going against I mean, the same things happening on the
- 32:46Speaker 4: other side, but nobody else is dominant as us.
- 32:51Speaker 2: And I will say another thing, You think that okay,
- 32:55Speaker 2: because the games were close, they ended up becoming the
- 32:57Speaker 2: championship games.
- 32:58Speaker 4: The championship games were there is some move there is
- 33:02Speaker 4: some movement for other countries to have a shot at us.
- 33:07Speaker 5: But and I'll say this, and yes, and that's what
- 33:10Speaker 5: I want. I want the parody. And I think another
- 33:13Speaker 5: thing that's to me, that's kind of lost its luster
- 33:16Speaker 5: when you talk about the basketball specifically, because a lot
- 33:20Speaker 5: of the European players are in the NBA. Yes, so
- 33:24Speaker 5: we know those guys were back in the day when
- 33:26Speaker 5: you're looking at Yugoslavia and Serbia, you know these cats,
- 33:29Speaker 5: you know spread and then you watch it and you
- 33:30Speaker 5: see this great Cedric Sibonis. You see you see these
- 33:34Speaker 5: great that's I say, Cedric h I forget a brother's
- 33:37Speaker 5: name played for Portland, but you see these great players
- 33:40Speaker 5: across the water that you never heard of. So there
- 33:43Speaker 5: was a little mystery with that where now it's kind of.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Like, I'll give you that because to me, I'm thinking,
- 33:50Speaker 4: if you're playing in the NBA, yeah, you're good, but then.
- 33:54Speaker 2: You're good, you're good enough you could you're supposed to
- 33:56Speaker 2: compete with them.
- 33:57Speaker 4: So would you be okay? So, so is it possible
- 34:01Speaker 4: even could they compete at the collegiate level. So let's
- 34:06Speaker 4: say if you went collegiate athletes.
- 34:08Speaker 5: The problem with the collegiate athletes and I like that idea,
- 34:11Speaker 5: but the only problem is that you don't have the
- 34:13Speaker 5: guys who are staying three in four years in basketball
- 34:15Speaker 5: no more so that sounds like a good idea. What
- 34:18Speaker 5: I what I like to see is common competition be
- 34:21Speaker 5: you think the competition would be, we would get whooked,
- 34:24Speaker 5: we wouldn't be bronze medal game.
- 34:27Speaker 4: And are you saying that because those particular guys who
- 34:30Speaker 4: that will eventually be to the NBA, those guys are
- 34:33Speaker 4: going to be those players, because you would have NBA
- 34:36Speaker 4: players that play for sir By in Spain and France
- 34:38Speaker 4: and all that like Wimby, right, imagine winby going against.
- 34:43Speaker 2: If you can't be in the NBA. Are you saying
- 34:45Speaker 2: like making back for it's no professionals, it's no professionals.
- 34:49Speaker 5: That to me, that would be funner because we because
- 34:52Speaker 5: and here's what I'm saying, it would be funner because
- 34:55Speaker 5: you would have a point of discovery. So we're like
- 34:57Speaker 5: discovering this person on this international stage. Like the sister
- 35:01Speaker 5: from that played for France. She was she got cut
- 35:04Speaker 5: by the w n B A she goes a year
- 35:05Speaker 5: from play and now she playing for France and she
- 35:07Speaker 5: balled out, so we knew her, but we really know her.
- 35:10Speaker 5: And now that she's playing for France, it's like a
- 35:12Speaker 5: point of discovery, like, oh, now she's probably get signed
- 35:15Speaker 5: back to the NBA.
- 35:17Speaker 2: So I don't so there's no discovery.
- 35:18Speaker 5: We know all the guys, and I'm saying, like I'm
- 35:21Speaker 5: not saying bring it back to college, because i think
- 35:22Speaker 5: we're past that, but I'm saying, let the young NBA
- 35:25Speaker 5: guys go, let them get built up.
- 35:27Speaker 4: But if you go to the college, it's I mean
- 35:31Speaker 4: because when you when you look at the NBA, like
- 35:34Speaker 4: the track guys, I guess there's no real professional track.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Not not because they because they're shotting after colleges. Yes, yes, yes, so.
- 35:46Speaker 4: I'm thinking like collegiate would be different.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's just you don't have you don't have
- 35:53Speaker 5: enough because basketball guys are spread out now because like
- 35:56Speaker 5: the talent from high school, you got some that's going
- 35:59Speaker 5: to college, you got something that's going G League, you
- 36:01Speaker 5: got some that's going here or something that's going it's
- 36:03Speaker 5: too spread out now where it's not that concentration of
- 36:06Speaker 5: talent where we could just pull we know these are
- 36:08Speaker 5: the best players. I think it's the point like the
- 36:10Speaker 5: like the basketball tournament that happens in the summer. It's
- 36:13Speaker 5: fun because a lot of these guys we knew at
- 36:16Speaker 5: one point, but kind of you know, they they've been
- 36:19Speaker 5: on their basketball journey somewhere else and some of these
- 36:21Speaker 5: guys were were just discovering. So it's fun to discover it.
- 36:24Speaker 5: So I don't think I think that's been lost with
- 36:27Speaker 5: USA basketball.
- 36:28Speaker 2: So if Steph Curry was anybody other than Steph Curry
- 36:31Speaker 2: and he hit those threads and was like, who is
- 36:34Speaker 2: this guy, we were like we were birth a new star.
- 36:36Speaker 5: But Steph Curry's stardom can't get any more started because
- 36:40Speaker 5: everybody watched, right, So I think, and that's your number one,
- 36:45Speaker 5: and I'll give you my number. My number one was
- 36:50Speaker 5: it's tight too, man. These were all tight. But I
- 36:54Speaker 5: would say I would have to say China. They won
- 36:57Speaker 5: eight gold medals in every single they go. They had
- 37:01Speaker 5: to go meddle all the diving events, so the platform
- 37:05Speaker 5: the synchronized the springboard men's women's they got golden every
- 37:11Speaker 5: single diving And to watch these diving events, because I'm
- 37:14Speaker 5: a that's probably One of my favorite Olympic sports is
- 37:17Speaker 5: the diving.
- 37:18Speaker 2: It was fun, nomenal. You're jumping, like I think we
- 37:22Speaker 2: talked about it.
- 37:23Speaker 5: Twenty meters, thirty miles an hour, going down and twisting
- 37:28Speaker 5: and turning, no splash, and they purely dominated. And again,
- 37:33Speaker 5: you know, to my point, I guess I'm contradicting myself
- 37:35Speaker 5: a little because they seem to dominate this event in
- 37:38Speaker 5: every Olympics. But again, we don't see that. I don't
- 37:41Speaker 5: see this but every four years, I don't watch it.
- 37:43Speaker 5: You know, you might watch it, catch it on ESPNU,
- 37:46Speaker 5: the collegiate diving, but it's not something you're watching often
- 37:49Speaker 5: for me to see that just and again, it's so
- 37:54Speaker 5: phenomenal that they gotta they gotta judge you on the
- 37:57Speaker 5: most tiki tech things, you know what I mean, quite
- 38:00Speaker 5: going straight after fifty flips.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and it's splash and it's flash.
- 38:05Speaker 4: That's the crazy thing to me is like, man, I'm
- 38:08Speaker 4: probably gonna hit belly up, belly up cannonball, right, yes, because.
- 38:12Speaker 2: There's just no way.
- 38:14Speaker 7: So all right, so number two, my number two, no
- 38:18Speaker 7: allows one hundred meters and and and not just that
- 38:23Speaker 7: he woned.
- 38:24Speaker 4: That was but the fact that they all want yeah,
- 38:29Speaker 4: they I mean, like you had like eight people within
- 38:32Speaker 4: inches of winning.
- 38:34Speaker 2: That was crazy.
- 38:35Speaker 7: And the idea and we've had this conversation that Colonel
- 38:40Speaker 7: Lewis would have been last in this heat in the
- 38:45Speaker 7: advancement of the hunter and the advancement of speed is
- 38:49Speaker 7: crazy to me.
- 38:52Speaker 4: And I and I'm not and it really and I
- 38:55Speaker 4: don't even know necessarily if I'm going to say first, second,
- 38:57Speaker 4: third or whatever, but I'm just saying that was the
- 39:00Speaker 4: one hundred meters.
- 39:01Speaker 2: To me was like, because that's that's the race. That's
- 39:05Speaker 2: the race, right, that and the two hundred and four
- 39:07Speaker 2: hundred are great racists, but the hundreds the fastest man
- 39:10Speaker 2: in the world.
- 39:10Speaker 4: Right, And so you had literally eight people at the
- 39:15Speaker 4: long at the line that all all beat Carl.
- 39:20Speaker 5: Lewis, right, And it was like, because we were trying
- 39:24Speaker 5: to look, I didn't even know who won't, like because
- 39:26Speaker 5: I'm looking at it and had to kind of look
- 39:29Speaker 5: at it a few times because I'm not sure, Like
- 39:30Speaker 5: I'm like, did he winded?
- 39:31Speaker 2: He winded? They winded? Who won this? Because they were
- 39:34Speaker 2: literally all right there?
- 39:36Speaker 5: And like I said, see, that's the type of stuff
- 39:37Speaker 5: that like we I remember like from this Olympics, the
- 39:40Speaker 5: fifteen hundred where fighting strapping on one hundred, right, that's
- 39:43Speaker 5: what I want to see. I mean, it's fun to
- 39:45Speaker 5: see Hussein boat. It's fun to see him, no doubt,
- 39:49Speaker 5: but I like this to look like, yeah, you can't help,
- 39:51Speaker 5: but loved the idea of that, of the of the competition.
- 39:55Speaker 2: It's like all that.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And because when I look when you look at the
- 39:58Speaker 4: still picture that as a dude to if you're looking
- 40:02Speaker 4: at the picture making right his foot his full over
- 40:05Speaker 4: the line, I'm like he won, because I say, I'm like,
- 40:08Speaker 4: he won this race.
- 40:09Speaker 5: But then then I then I learned it's your Torsell.
- 40:13Speaker 5: So it's like stuff like that, like when you're discovering
- 40:15Speaker 5: and we're watching it like we know we watched.
- 40:18Speaker 2: It, like we know, but we don't don't. Yeah, like
- 40:20Speaker 2: we had no idea that was That's how they measured that.
- 40:23Speaker 2: And that's what I'm saying.
- 40:24Speaker 5: That's what I love about the I want to see
- 40:26Speaker 5: because again the thing you love about it, this is
- 40:29Speaker 5: every four years, so you got nine seconds in this
- 40:34Speaker 5: maybe maybe at this point maybe so you got nine
- 40:38Speaker 5: sex it's all you got and this is it And.
- 40:42Speaker 4: I don't even know, like if people can actually really understand,
- 40:46Speaker 4: like because a lot of people may not even know
- 40:49Speaker 4: the name Carl Lewis.
- 40:50Speaker 2: But this was like the number one one hundred yards sprinter,
- 40:55Speaker 2: like and and and with Carl Lewis.
- 40:58Speaker 5: Not only the sprint events, he did the law you
- 41:00Speaker 5: talking about superior supreme athlete. Yeah, thirty nine whatever it was,
- 41:05Speaker 5: won the long jump. Yes, yes, you know in his
- 41:08Speaker 5: last Olympics you're talking about a walk off and a
- 41:11Speaker 5: guy and.
- 41:12Speaker 2: You're talking about he wouldn't he'd have been eighth, eighth
- 41:17Speaker 2: or ninth. If he was in the group, he would
- 41:20Speaker 2: have been ninth.
- 41:22Speaker 4: And and that's that's the that's the amazing reality of
- 41:26Speaker 4: how these athletes are so special. And it's and it's
- 41:31Speaker 4: why I made the comment a week or so ago
- 41:34Speaker 4: about like these are different athletes than been playing football.
- 41:38Speaker 2: You know, these are different athletes than just playing basketball.
- 41:42Speaker 4: These athletes because you don't have basketball, Like you got basketball.
- 41:45Speaker 2: You can play basketball all the time, right, You're gonna
- 41:48Speaker 2: go play football all the time. You're training football.
- 41:51Speaker 4: These you're running one hundred this like you you you
- 41:55Speaker 4: spend in four years for nine seconds.
- 41:58Speaker 5: Yeah, man, that's what said. I love it, so all right,
- 42:01Speaker 5: My number two is I'm hoping I'm gonna get this
- 42:05Speaker 5: system name right. Her name is Safon Hassan. She is
- 42:09Speaker 5: a middle distance runner from Dutch Netherland, Netherlands.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Let me say this.
- 42:15Speaker 5: She wins the gold medal in the marathon, so that's
- 42:20Speaker 5: twenty six miles. She wins the bronze medal in the
- 42:24Speaker 5: ten thousand meter, that's six point one two miles. She
- 42:28Speaker 5: wants the she wins the bronze medal in the five
- 42:31Speaker 5: thousand meter, that's a five k. She won three medals,
- 42:36Speaker 5: three distant races in a two week span. Brouh, that's
- 42:43Speaker 5: that's that's first of all saying and and and the
- 42:46Speaker 5: and the marathon was the last race.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Yeah, see I would have been wanting to put that
- 42:51Speaker 2: that marathon in front. Can I can?
- 42:55Speaker 4: I can make it up on the on the back
- 42:57Speaker 4: end of it. But but yeah, that kind of that
- 43:00Speaker 4: kind of running at that kind of distance to train,
- 43:06Speaker 4: I can't even imagine the training. I'm assuming training for
- 43:10Speaker 4: the for the marathon can't do anything but help you
- 43:15Speaker 4: with the others, with the other But there is in.
- 43:17Speaker 2: The shorter distances though, there is more of a quicker.
- 43:22Speaker 4: Speed it's a quicker speed and maybe even even a
- 43:25Speaker 4: sprint towards the end.
- 43:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and you're running these and they're running these marathons
- 43:30Speaker 5: now sub like three three hours and for the women
- 43:33Speaker 5: just maybe over three hours. And if you look at particularly,
- 43:37Speaker 5: like if you're looking at these races, these individuals, these
- 43:40Speaker 5: aren't trots. No, they got good open up sprint, knees up,
- 43:45Speaker 5: these are good pace races. So like when I saw that,
- 43:50Speaker 5: I just couldn't because I'm like, because first of all,
- 43:52Speaker 5: it's funny because I'm watching the marathon. I'm a nerd,
- 43:54Speaker 5: Like I watched the marathons too. I'm watching the marathon.
- 43:57Speaker 5: I was like, she had the blue and the orange
- 43:59Speaker 5: unifor It's like, is that the same person that was
- 44:02Speaker 5: in the now I was like, that can't be the
- 44:05Speaker 5: same person that you ain't doing that. You can't run
- 44:07Speaker 5: off three of those. And then it come to find
- 44:09Speaker 5: out she won three medals three distant races, and I
- 44:12Speaker 5: just think that's just a feat. To me, that's just
- 44:15Speaker 5: almost incomprehensible, and with that amount of pressure and that
- 44:19Speaker 5: amount of time to be able to do that.
- 44:22Speaker 4: And I want to touch that first challenge that you
- 44:26Speaker 4: put on her when you start talking when you start
- 44:30Speaker 4: talking about being the pressure of running a race, that distance,
- 44:42Speaker 4: the confidence in which you have to have to know
- 44:46Speaker 4: that you can you can finish it?
- 44:48Speaker 5: Is that confidence or delusion? Because I know I can't.
- 44:55Speaker 5: You know, I may be able to do like the
- 44:57Speaker 5: one of them, but you can't have it. I can't
- 44:59Speaker 5: do them in a two week period and you training
- 45:04Speaker 5: on top of it. You still got a little workout
- 45:05Speaker 5: in between.
- 45:06Speaker 2: All mard what must that training? What must her training be? Like?
- 45:11Speaker 4: That's what I don't I would like, I don't know
- 45:14Speaker 4: because you know, you know, you guys when we were
- 45:17Speaker 4: doing the you know the four the four four fours,
- 45:20Speaker 4: you know, training for football, right, Like, so you running
- 45:25Speaker 4: quarter two hundred and a one hundred and you're and
- 45:29Speaker 4: you've been over.
- 45:30Speaker 2: At the end of that, but you're ready for the season. Yeah,
- 45:35Speaker 2: how is she? How is she? Like?
- 45:39Speaker 4: She's running like Olympic times, Olympic times in training.
- 45:47Speaker 2: At some point, she's gotta she's got to actually run
- 45:49Speaker 2: that marathon. She got to test it, she's got to
- 45:51Speaker 2: test it, so she she already now knows that she
- 45:54Speaker 2: can get there. And the crazy thing about that is, gosh,
- 45:58Speaker 2: what all did you put in before the first time.
- 46:01Speaker 2: You said, well, you know what, I'm gonna test this
- 46:03Speaker 2: one today.
- 46:03Speaker 5: And I like as you said that, because we're not
- 46:05Speaker 5: taught again, we're not talking about somebody who's trying out
- 46:08Speaker 5: there doing all this in two weeks. I think we
- 46:11Speaker 5: probably could do that, or somebody could probably do that.
- 46:14Speaker 5: But you're running Olympic times, you're running, you're competing and
- 46:18Speaker 5: these and what people don't understand. I think people got
- 46:21Speaker 5: a better picture of now when you have these distance
- 46:24Speaker 5: and middle distance races. These are highly competitive races. These
- 46:28Speaker 5: aren't something where you just kind of tried. Now you
- 46:30Speaker 5: just kind of coast your way into getting the gap
- 46:33Speaker 5: between you and other competitors.
- 46:34Speaker 4: If if there's any question about that, watch when they
- 46:38Speaker 4: come across the finish Watch when they come what do
- 46:40Speaker 4: they do?
- 46:41Speaker 3: Man?
- 46:41Speaker 2: They fall out like they are about to die.
- 46:44Speaker 4: And so to me, I'm looking at that and I
- 46:47Speaker 4: might thinking, man, the work that they must have put
- 46:51Speaker 4: in to do that, and then knowing that that's how
- 46:55Speaker 4: you're gonna feel at the end, like you know you're
- 46:58Speaker 4: gonna be laid out on the track.
- 47:01Speaker 5: I feel like you were about to die, right And
- 47:03Speaker 5: it's like I said, when I when I saw that,
- 47:05Speaker 5: like I said, and for whatever reason, I watched all
- 47:07Speaker 5: three of her race. I watched the ten to five
- 47:10Speaker 5: and I watched the marathon, and I was just amazed
- 47:13Speaker 5: by that was she the.
- 47:14Speaker 2: One that came back? Was that the was that did
- 47:17Speaker 2: she come back? She was trailing for a minute and
- 47:20Speaker 2: then again she that was her. She in the five
- 47:23Speaker 2: thousand minutes.
- 47:24Speaker 5: She didn't get the gold, but she was kind of
- 47:26Speaker 5: she was in the back and then she she pulled
- 47:28Speaker 5: up and then she ended up getting the bronze medal
- 47:30Speaker 5: in that, like I said, even at like I said,
- 47:32Speaker 5: you got three medals and an Olympic in three distance races.
- 47:37Speaker 2: It was phenomenal.
- 47:38Speaker 4: All right, well I'm gonna jump on the third one. Okay,
- 47:41Speaker 4: Simoon Bobs, Okay, you can you can't, you can't. You
- 47:46Speaker 4: can't argue with that. She is the most gold medals I.
- 47:51Speaker 5: Think of anybody, any gymnasts, gymnastymnas.
- 47:57Speaker 4: Okay, Now I'm watching her because I remember her, you know,
- 48:02Speaker 4: I you know, I remember seeing her before and I
- 48:04Speaker 4: remember how good she was. That drew me to the
- 48:08Speaker 4: gymnastics piece and Hollis Man like her routines were like
- 48:14Speaker 4: like crazy and you know, and like a couple of
- 48:16Speaker 4: times she stepped off the map, which I thought was
- 48:18Speaker 4: was kind of crazy because everything else she did.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Was like like locked in, like her landings and stuff
- 48:26Speaker 2: like that. So it was it was kind of crazy
- 48:28Speaker 2: to me. But it's still still if.
- 48:31Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken, that she had the most she's had ten,
- 48:34Speaker 4: ten total, Lisa, and she and she was banged up
- 48:38Speaker 4: this Olympics.
- 48:39Speaker 2: She was hurt. Yes, if you watch, if you she
- 48:41Speaker 2: was wrapped up.
- 48:41Speaker 4: She was pretty much hurt this whole Olympics, and still
- 48:44Speaker 4: pulled it out and talked and they talked too about her,
- 48:47Speaker 4: you know with emotionally, you know, she had she had
- 48:51Speaker 4: some things and yet you can come out there and
- 48:56Speaker 4: you can, like I watch her like when.
- 48:57Speaker 2: They when they have the camera on her, it looks
- 49:00Speaker 2: like she's not happy that the camera's on her. It's
- 49:03Speaker 2: kind of like, you know, it comes with it, and
- 49:05Speaker 2: she's kind of just living in it.
- 49:07Speaker 4: But she never really showed me, like, you know, like
- 49:11Speaker 4: any kind of like arrogance about her her work now right,
- 49:16Speaker 4: you know, And she just seemed to be all part team,
- 49:20Speaker 4: you know everything.
- 49:21Speaker 2: That's the part I like because I think she willed
- 49:24Speaker 2: that team.
- 49:25Speaker 5: I think, you know what I'm saying, I think really
- 49:27Speaker 5: like if you look at it, because if you look
- 49:30Speaker 5: if you paid attention to gymnastics, it was it was
- 49:33Speaker 5: a struggle for just everybody who was competing. I think
- 49:35Speaker 5: they were all gassed out after team competition, once they
- 49:38Speaker 5: got to individuals, everybody was banged up, everybody's It was
- 49:41Speaker 5: a lot of pressure on everybody. I'm saying all countries,
- 49:45Speaker 5: and I think Samono's bios she really willed that team
- 49:48Speaker 5: to to you know, ascend to where they got to.
- 49:52Speaker 5: So I think she had that added pressure on her
- 49:54Speaker 5: where she was really the superstar because if you look
- 49:56Speaker 5: at it, honestly, she was a superstar of the Olympics,
- 50:00Speaker 5: the one everybody everybody knew, everybody was coming to. You
- 50:03Speaker 5: had the Tom Brady's, all the supercars, all the snoops,
- 50:06Speaker 5: you had everybody coming to see her her, you know
- 50:09Speaker 5: what I mean. So it was a lot of pressure,
- 50:10Speaker 5: even in spite of all the physical elements that.
- 50:13Speaker 2: She was facing. Yeah, and and to to be able
- 50:16Speaker 2: to be that leader of a team, yeah, you.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Know like I felt like she Yeah, I think I
- 50:23Speaker 4: felt like she she made everybody comfortable. Yes, I think
- 50:30Speaker 4: she made everybody comfortable and and and and believing that
- 50:33Speaker 4: they can do whatever is out there that you're supposed
- 50:36Speaker 4: to do, whatever the whatever the the if it was
- 50:40Speaker 4: it was like she was that she was that oversight
- 50:44Speaker 4: of that comfort. Just go out there and just do
- 50:46Speaker 4: your best and you're gonna be fine. I said, that's
- 50:48Speaker 4: a really really good point because.
- 50:49Speaker 2: She had to overcome that with you know, stepping off
- 50:52Speaker 2: the mat and that kind of thing. She had all that,
- 50:55Speaker 2: all that she had to deal with that, and she did,
- 50:58Speaker 2: and she did.
- 50:59Speaker 5: Like I said, it was phenomenal. But my number three
- 51:02Speaker 5: is Sidney McLaughlin and I hope my getting a sister's
- 51:05Speaker 5: name right. She's four hundred. Like I've never seen anybody
- 51:11Speaker 5: just totally dominate like this. I mean, and again we
- 51:16Speaker 5: like I said mentioned before, like I like to see
- 51:18Speaker 5: the competition, I like to see the type the tight racist,
- 51:22Speaker 5: but to have pure domination and an event that I
- 51:27Speaker 5: think with in my eyes and I don't have experience,
- 51:31Speaker 5: but I would say it's probably one of the hardest
- 51:33Speaker 5: track events as far as the sprint division is concerned.
- 51:37Speaker 5: She has the four hundred meter hurdles. She ran it
- 51:40Speaker 5: in fifty one and then she comes back on the
- 51:44Speaker 5: four by four. Her split of her four hundred was
- 51:48Speaker 5: forty seven seconds, and they got I think that was
- 51:53Speaker 5: the Olympic in the world record that they broke into
- 51:55Speaker 5: four x four of the women's Yes. So I just
- 51:58Speaker 5: couldn't believe at the e in which she made that look,
- 52:02Speaker 5: particularly like I said, that four hundred meter hurdle, she
- 52:05Speaker 5: made it looks like child's play, like she was just running.
- 52:09Speaker 4: Wasn't that didn't they say that she ran She ran
- 52:12Speaker 4: the hurdles as fast as people run the just the
- 52:15Speaker 4: straight four hundred, just.
- 52:16Speaker 5: To straight four hundred, Like I said, it was fifty
- 52:17Speaker 5: one seconds. It was literally as fast as some good
- 52:22Speaker 5: runners are running up real good real good runners are
- 52:24Speaker 5: running at four hundred.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean she and I think maybe.
- 52:28Speaker 5: She kind of probably, I mean she probably could have
- 52:30Speaker 5: knocked the second or two off of it, not to
- 52:32Speaker 5: say she was jogging, but it was such a distance
- 52:35Speaker 5: by like those last couple of hurdles, that it wasn't
- 52:37Speaker 5: even a competition at that point. And like I said,
- 52:39Speaker 5: I like this. I know I contradicted myself. I like
- 52:41Speaker 5: to see the titans and the closeness of the races.
- 52:44Speaker 5: But I think when you're watching somebody truly special, truly gifted,
- 52:48Speaker 5: I think she is an absolute superstar. I like everything
- 52:52Speaker 5: she stands for, and just to see that level of
- 52:56Speaker 5: domination was just insanity to me.
- 52:59Speaker 4: Is there now that the Olympics are gone, right, is
- 53:04Speaker 4: there anything to actually now replace it? Like, can you
- 53:08Speaker 4: can you just make a switch to football season now
- 53:12Speaker 4: and be comfortable in the idea of watching football or
- 53:18Speaker 4: is it something that you feel like you're gonna miss
- 53:20Speaker 4: because to me, I'm not a huge sports guy now,
- 53:26Speaker 4: you know, even though that's this is the whole show,
- 53:29Speaker 4: but the Olympics.
- 53:31Speaker 2: But the Olympics, I'm gonna miss them, you know, I'm
- 53:37Speaker 2: let me say it this way. I'm missing them already.
- 53:39Speaker 5: I definitely do. I think to me, like, like, I'm
- 53:42Speaker 5: a sports guy. I like watching sports, but I don't
- 53:45Speaker 5: watch a bunch of TV anymore, and that sports is
- 53:48Speaker 5: the one thing I watch on TV. So to have
- 53:50Speaker 5: just a variety of that high level sports that you
- 53:53Speaker 5: can recognize a name or to or get to know
- 53:55Speaker 5: a nambor too, is definitely gonna be missed. But I
- 53:58Speaker 5: think going into football season, like even like what we
- 54:01Speaker 5: previously talked about the classification switches here locally in West Virginia.
- 54:06Speaker 2: But I'm excited to see all that. See.
- 54:07Speaker 4: That's the frustrating piece to me is we we we
- 54:10Speaker 4: we sports, and I don't know if it's just here,
- 54:15Speaker 4: but sports, we're getting these things that that are messing
- 54:20Speaker 4: up the game. To me, I feel like I feel
- 54:22Speaker 4: like they get in the way of the actual game.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Somebody somebody with a suit and tie or dressed shirt
- 54:29Speaker 4: on calculator, you know, yeah, and and they're sitting there
- 54:32Speaker 4: and they're and and and they're motivating or trying to
- 54:37Speaker 4: motivate what should be happening in the game around the game.
- 54:40Speaker 2: And that's got me. That's that that's turned me off
- 54:44Speaker 2: so much. And I understand what you're saying.
- 54:46Speaker 5: And I think, to me, the most agreedious, egregious of
- 54:50Speaker 5: culprits of doing that is the NFL.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 54:53Speaker 5: I think they tinker almost to a fault. And I
- 54:57Speaker 5: think that's kind of gotten in the way of or
- 55:00Speaker 5: sort of trickle down to you know, when we're talking
- 55:03Speaker 5: about college and everything else like that. I think there
- 55:06Speaker 5: is too much tinkering that happens with athletics, particularly football.
- 55:11Speaker 5: It's unnecessary tinkering, But I am excited to see kind
- 55:15Speaker 5: of what's gonna be the fallout of I think even
- 55:18Speaker 5: last year when you're looking at all the transfers and
- 55:20Speaker 5: everything we talked about then it was it was pretty
- 55:22Speaker 5: excited to see kind of how this school is going
- 55:25Speaker 5: to match up against this school and what's what's what's
- 55:27Speaker 5: this player going to be like, and how this is
- 55:29Speaker 5: going to go. So I think, you know, just kind
- 55:32Speaker 5: of the newness that is the ever changing landscape of
- 55:36Speaker 5: football where there's college high schol to the NFL.
- 55:39Speaker 2: It's going to be exciting to watch this ship.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'm gonna give a little shout out Dwayne
- 55:44Speaker 4: Harris hoping that his knee as well and that he
- 55:48Speaker 4: can get back get back to his ability, because I really,
- 55:53Speaker 4: really really.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Think that's that.
- 55:56Speaker 4: I think he's a he's an athlete that that I
- 55:59Speaker 4: would love to see, you know, you to get better.
- 56:03Speaker 2: And we got a bunch of Kerry Martin's at NC State,
- 56:08Speaker 2: So it's gonna be fun. I posted I posted on
- 56:10Speaker 2: Facebook the other day that.
- 56:13Speaker 4: Bosley, somebody, I'm thinking you you might want to turn
- 56:16Speaker 4: the television on and watch it.
- 56:19Speaker 2: You may be watching somebody who's gonna be playing on Sunday.
- 56:22Speaker 4: I think you are, you know, and it's interesting to me,
- 56:26Speaker 4: and this is maybe another show we are actually because
- 56:31Speaker 4: of social media. I think we are turning out more
- 56:35Speaker 4: athletes because and the reason why I say social media
- 56:37Speaker 4: because I don't think we do it well enough in
- 56:39Speaker 4: the paper.
- 56:40Speaker 2: I don't think we've ever done it. You know, we
- 56:42Speaker 2: just have never promoted these athletes. And he doesn't have
- 56:44Speaker 2: to reach. Yeah, it just doesn't have to reach anymore.
- 56:46Speaker 4: So now that it's on social media, we're we're people
- 56:50Speaker 4: are hearing about these young athletes and I'm just hoping
- 56:54Speaker 4: that that drives them. And like I said, man, I
- 56:57Speaker 4: I really I think he's got some serious opportunity to
- 57:00Speaker 4: be on Sunday.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Man, I think we're gonna have a couple. And
- 57:04Speaker 2: that's like I said.
- 57:04Speaker 5: Even watching the Kid for the Bears, yeah, you know
- 57:09Speaker 5: they play this Shepherd, I think to me, that's just awesome.
- 57:12Speaker 5: Got a quarterback from the state that's playing yeah NFL. Yeah,
- 57:16Speaker 5: that's you know, and that's it, and that is it.
- 57:19Speaker 4: That is a position to really, I mean, you can't
- 57:23Speaker 4: fake you can't fake quarterback, you know. So all right,
- 57:28Speaker 4: well we'll give another shout out to Frank Walker. We
- 57:32Speaker 4: appreciate your services and support and Hollis you got anything
- 57:36Speaker 4: to close us out with?
- 57:37Speaker 5: Or no, that's it man, I'm, like I said, just
- 57:39Speaker 5: looking forward to this next football season coming up.
