- 0:34Speaker 1: hundred plays on NFL Network. Diehard Niners fan, also childhood
- 0:40Speaker 1: friend of Mike McDaniel. This is a really fun episode.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I think you guys are gonna love it. Please give
- 0:47Speaker 1: us a rating and a review. If you like the show,
- 0:51Speaker 1: enjoy it. Everybody Condo, Tom Data.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Go, We gotta go.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Thank go time joining me on today's program. This is
- 1:10Speaker 1: a fun one. You know, well, you don't know if
- 1:12Speaker 1: you're listening. I was about to say, you know, when
- 1:13Speaker 1: you do comedy festivals, But what a stupid thing to
- 1:17Speaker 1: say to people who aren't comedians. When you do comedy
- 1:20Speaker 1: festivals as a comedian, you get a chance to see
- 1:23Speaker 1: people you haven't seen in one hundred years, and it's
- 1:26Speaker 1: it turns into this unique bond, Like that's how I
- 1:30Speaker 1: feel on this show. It's Dan Soder. Yeah, every time
- 1:33Speaker 1: I see you, I get so excited. Yeah, almost like
- 1:37Speaker 1: I want to wrap my arms around you and not
- 1:39Speaker 1: let you leave. So this I don't know how this
- 1:41Speaker 1: episode's gonna go, but it's nice to see you. Man.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It's gonna go the distance, and it's great seeing you
- 1:46Speaker 2: because it is comedy becomes adult summer camp, so your
- 1:50Speaker 2: friends you only see at summer camp. You know, comics
- 1:53Speaker 2: are on the road every weekend, but in different cities.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So when you are when you happen to be in
- 1:56Speaker 2: a city with another comic that you're friends with, that's incredible.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And then the second thing is comedy festivals, where you're like,
- 2:03Speaker 2: we have so much to talk about.
- 2:05Speaker 1: What's happening?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, A lot of times you just picked back up
- 2:08Speaker 2: from when you saw each other last. So when you
- 2:10Speaker 2: reached out to me and you were like, hey, do
- 2:12Speaker 2: you want to come talk about the forty nine ers,
- 2:14Speaker 2: which A I always do and B you're like, dude,
- 2:17Speaker 2: come on my podcast, I was like, one hundred percent
- 2:18Speaker 2: I would love to do that. A meeting of two worlds.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and our main goal here, like I will do
- 2:23Speaker 1: my best not to unravel this thing into a two
- 2:26Speaker 1: hour you know, mutual ted talk. Let's start. Let's start
- 2:30Speaker 1: Niners here, because you are you're a die hard, lifelong
- 2:34Speaker 1: Niners fan.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, first piece of clothing I was put in was
- 2:37Speaker 2: a forty nine Ers onesie.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And it's just that's my question because you grew up
- 2:40Speaker 1: in Colorado.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Well, I was born in Hartford. My dad, my parents,
- 2:44Speaker 2: my dad specifically is from the Bay Area. My mom
- 2:47Speaker 2: is from Fresno. They met in San Francisco and were
- 2:51Speaker 2: married there and lived there for years. And then my
- 2:53Speaker 2: mom worked for ETNA and she got transferred to Hartford,
- 2:57Speaker 2: Connecticut because that's where their home office is. That's where
- 3:00Speaker 2: I was born. And then my mom got her her
- 3:03Speaker 2: whole family is from originally from Colorado, and she's an
- 3:07Speaker 2: opportunity to go be transferred to Denver and she was like, oh, Dan,
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'll have cousins and stuff like that around. So we
- 3:13Speaker 2: moved to Denver when I was five, but I was
- 3:18Speaker 2: locked in as a forty nine Ers fan. There was
- 3:20Speaker 2: like I was born in eighty three, so I missed
- 3:22Speaker 2: the eighty one Super Bowl. But I you know, you're
- 3:25Speaker 2: born in the eighties to the forty nine ers, you're
- 3:27Speaker 2: a forty nine Er fan. There's just yeah, And then
- 3:29Speaker 2: it went through. You know, I was always a forty
- 3:32Speaker 2: nine Ers fan. But the thing that really makes it
- 3:34Speaker 2: set in stone is and you know this, and every
- 3:37Speaker 2: NFL team fan knows this, except maybe a young Patriots fan.
- 3:42Speaker 2: The lean years are what make you a diehard fan,
- 3:46Speaker 2: the least years where you know, after Eddie de Barbolo
- 3:50Speaker 2: Junior had to sell the team to the York family,
- 3:52Speaker 2: his sister and her husband.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Pause right there, Let's take a moment and do something
- 3:57Speaker 1: that I never get to do with anyone. Let's and
- 3:59Speaker 1: I know there's some stuff at the end there that
- 4:01Speaker 1: I'm not I don't need to like get it. But
- 4:04Speaker 1: like Eddie de Bartolo Junior is the pre eminent example
- 4:09Speaker 1: of good. Like the way that guy he introduced giving
- 4:12Speaker 1: players their own rooms, like all that, Like the way
- 4:15Speaker 1: he treated players.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I could argue greatest stoner in the history of the NFL.
- 4:19Speaker 2: He I yeah, he bought the team. He's from Youngstown, Ohio.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Bought the team for a million dollars from his dad,
- 4:27Speaker 2: and then that was nineteen seventy eight. I believe he
- 4:31Speaker 2: bought the team nineteen seventy nine. He brings in Bill Walsh,
- 4:34Speaker 2: they draft Joe Montana. By nineteen eighty one, their Super
- 4:37Speaker 2: Bowl champions, and then they go on a run until
- 4:40Speaker 2: he honestly he sold the team, I believe in Like
- 4:43Speaker 2: I might be wrong about the actual year, but it
- 4:45Speaker 2: was around two three and the forty nine ers were
- 4:50Speaker 2: winning a division every year, almost every year, and almost
- 4:54Speaker 2: every year in the NFC Championship game. So it was
- 4:56Speaker 2: a question of you know, you go from Bill Walsh
- 4:59Speaker 2: to George Seffert, you stay good. But then you go
- 5:02Speaker 2: George Seffert to Mooch to Steve Mariucci and you stay good.
- 5:07Speaker 2: It's like, well, that's that's ownership. That's just keeping a culture.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And the thing that I love about Adea Bartolow Junior,
- 5:14Speaker 2: every single player, I think it's every single player from
- 5:18Speaker 2: his tenure as owner that's became a Hall of Famer,
- 5:21Speaker 2: has had him and duck them into the Hall of Fame.
- 5:24Speaker 2: That's nuts.
- 5:25Speaker 1: That's the crazy thing. And what a lot of people
- 5:27Speaker 1: don't know is, and I'm not saying it was his
- 5:30Speaker 1: personal Yoda, but when Robert Kraft was buying the Patriots.
- 5:34Speaker 1: He went to Di Bartolow and was like, like, so
- 5:37Speaker 1: this this way of treating players, like to Bartolo, the
- 5:40Speaker 1: whole thing, standing in the hallway, greeting the players after
- 5:43Speaker 1: the game, knowing their families, spending this different sort of time,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I think makes you want to play for him exactly.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And he just built this culture. But it's interesting that
- 5:52Speaker 1: you grew up like you were real little when they
- 5:56Speaker 1: were on that amazing run. So you probably have a
- 5:59Speaker 1: couple memories. Yeah, But then like there's that core moment
- 6:03Speaker 1: of sports fandom, you know, like thirteen to eighteen where
- 6:07Speaker 1: the world is different.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But again still fine. Forty nine Ers wonted. The last
- 6:12Speaker 2: time the forty nine Ers won in Super Bowl, I
- 6:14Speaker 2: was eleven. It was nineteen ninety four in Okay. Yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 2: it was the seventy fifth anniversary season. We beat the
- 6:19Speaker 2: Chargers in the Super Bowl, and then the next year
- 6:23Speaker 2: NFC Championship lose to the Cowboys in ninety five, and
- 6:26Speaker 2: then we go through the Green Bay Brett Farv the
- 6:30Speaker 2: early Brett fav years, which you guys saw them turn around.
- 6:33Speaker 2: When Holmgren, again a former forty nine Er guy, goes
- 6:37Speaker 2: Coast yep and turns the West Coast offense with Brett Farvre.
- 6:40Speaker 2: So then I hate the Packers from ninety six to
- 6:43Speaker 2: ninety nine, but we get the we get the taroll
- 6:46Speaker 2: Owens catch, we get like you know, there's still moments.
- 6:50Speaker 2: The last great moment I remember of the forty nine
- 6:54Speaker 2: Ers being like the old like when they were running
- 6:57Speaker 2: on fumes of gas, which a lot of people don't remember.
- 6:59Speaker 2: This was in the playoffs. The forty nine Ers came
- 7:04Speaker 2: back with Jeff Garcia against the New York Giants. We
- 7:07Speaker 2: were down like seventeen.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Is this the taroll Owens crying moment?
- 7:11Speaker 2: No, that was the Packers. That was that was That
- 7:13Speaker 2: was the Packers. Yeah, okay, that was a wild card
- 7:16Speaker 2: game against the Packers in ninety eight. That was still
- 7:18Speaker 2: Steve Young. But later turn of the century, Oh, I
- 7:21Speaker 2: think it's two. The forty might be one. Two. The
- 7:24Speaker 2: forty nine Ers beat the Giants on this massive comeback
- 7:28Speaker 2: win in the playoffs, and then that was it. We
- 7:30Speaker 2: lost to somebody, and then it was like, I think
- 7:32Speaker 2: we lost to the Rams. Were the greatest show on turf.
- 7:34Speaker 2: And then it got real dark, and then it got
- 7:36Speaker 2: real bad. It got I got it got.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Real, but not for that long all of a sudden.
- 7:42Speaker 2: That I disagree. I disagree. Your eight years is a
- 7:46Speaker 2: long time.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Stop, dude, I will not do this with you. Well,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I will not do this with you.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Here's the analogy I always make growing up a forty
- 7:54Speaker 2: nine Ers fan in the eighties and nineties foot NFL wise,
- 7:58Speaker 2: I grew up riches and then we found out my
- 8:02Speaker 2: dad had been a part of a Ponzi scheme, and
- 8:04Speaker 2: we lost everything for eight years. I mean we lost everything,
- 8:08Speaker 2: We lost the house, we had to go live with family.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And then you get this like business idea that your
- 8:16Speaker 2: dad invests in that gets you money again, and you
- 8:18Speaker 2: got horriball and you've got three seasons of going. You
- 8:21Speaker 2: go to a super Bowl, you go to three NFC
- 8:23Speaker 2: Championship games, and you're like, we're back on top, baby,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and then you find out that was a Ponzi scheme,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and then you lose it for three more years and
- 8:31Speaker 2: you're like, what's going on? And then Kyle Shanahan was like,
- 8:34Speaker 2: all right, I'm gonna put your family, you know, And
- 8:36Speaker 2: then now we're back in the mix where you're kind
- 8:38Speaker 2: of like you don't trust the wealth but it's nice
- 8:40Speaker 2: to be back.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, it must be really hard to have
- 8:44Speaker 1: been rich a bunch of different times. Right, thirty years.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And I realized I'm talking to a Vikings fan after
- 8:51Speaker 2: you guys went ow and four in the Super Bowl
- 8:52Speaker 2: in the seventies and eighties and they haven't been back since.
- 8:56Speaker 2: If the forty nine Ers win a Super Bowl this year,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it will be one of those things where I'm like,
- 9:02Speaker 2: I am I can rest. Yeah, I would cheer for
- 9:05Speaker 2: the Vikings. I'll tell you the four teams I would
- 9:07Speaker 2: cheer for, which surprisingly they just beat us. I would
- 9:10Speaker 2: cheer for the Browns. Sure, I would cheer for the Vikings.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Sure I would cheer for the Lions. And then, of course,
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean, I'm gonna cheer for him regardless of the Miami Dolphins,
- 9:19Speaker 2: because of Mike McDaniel.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I can't budge off of how I'm feeling watching you
- 9:25Speaker 1: describe your hardship, and it's interesting. But you're right, But
- 9:32Speaker 1: it's like to watch one of the things. When I
- 9:34Speaker 1: was thinking about this episode, I wanted to I had
- 9:37Speaker 1: written down. I was like, I should ask him how
- 9:40Speaker 1: great it feels to have Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But just then listening to you say that, I want
- 9:46Speaker 1: to set your apartment on fire. So but it is,
- 9:52Speaker 1: it is wild you there's those rare moments. I felt it.
- 9:56Speaker 1: In ninety eight, Oh my.
- 9:58Speaker 2: God, your guys's team was the best team in the NFL.
- 10:03Speaker 2: And you know I told you about growing up in Colorado.
- 10:07Speaker 2: My uncle, my dad's half brother, had Bronco season tickets
- 10:12Speaker 2: and he had no one to go with. And I'm
- 10:14Speaker 2: a massive NFL fan, so I would go to these
- 10:17Speaker 2: Bronco games and it kind of got me a little
- 10:21Speaker 2: bit for a while to be like, oh, I like
- 10:23Speaker 2: the Broncos. It's fun watching John Elway. And then when
- 10:26Speaker 2: Mike Shanahan came over from the Niners he was ro
- 10:29Speaker 2: coordinator and left after that Super Bowl and came to
- 10:32Speaker 2: the Broncos, I had more of an ind of like, okay,
- 10:35Speaker 2: go Broncos. But I was at the nineteen ninety eight
- 10:41Speaker 2: AFC Championship game my uncle, and I'll tell you right now,
- 10:48Speaker 2: when you guys lost to the Falcons, there was a
- 10:51Speaker 2: and I mean this in anyone that was at Mile
- 10:54Speaker 2: High Stadium will tell you this. There was a collective
- 10:58Speaker 2: sigh of like, okay, if the if the Broncos win today,
- 11:03Speaker 2: they'll win the Super Bowl. Like there was that like, oh,
- 11:07Speaker 2: if everyone knew in Mile High Stadium that the Vikings
- 11:10Speaker 2: were the best team in the NFL. The nineteen ninety
- 11:12Speaker 2: eight Vikings were the best team that year.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And I feel like right now your your team is
- 11:18Speaker 1: living in one of those moments I don't want to
- 11:19Speaker 1: put I don't know where your superstitions lie. I don't
- 11:22Speaker 1: want to put a lot.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I mean recently, it's yeah, it's been so hard. Last
- 11:26Speaker 2: season's NFC Championship game was so heartbreaking that you're like,
- 11:29Speaker 2: I don't even know if superstitions are real anymore. Now
- 11:31Speaker 2: it's just like I'm like a war torn guy where
- 11:33Speaker 2: I'm just like, yeah, bring it whatever brother is.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And I can't. I can't believe I'm gonna give this
- 11:38Speaker 1: to you, but I believe it in my heart it
- 11:40Speaker 1: will be. If you guys do win the Super Bowl
- 11:43Speaker 1: this year, that journey not for all of them. I'm
- 11:46Speaker 1: investing in you, my friend, who I care about. Sure
- 11:49Speaker 1: that that personal journey of eleven years old when we
- 11:53Speaker 1: won our last one and then getting too experience because
- 11:57Speaker 1: I think every sports fan I know, oh, it's not possible.
- 12:01Speaker 1: The world isn't magic. I think every die hard sports
- 12:04Speaker 1: fan should get to experience their team winning a title
- 12:09Speaker 1: when they're in their youth and a title when they're
- 12:12Speaker 1: an adult. That would be sports world perfection to experience that.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Now, you gotta understand. When I moved to Denver, there
- 12:22Speaker 2: was a lot going on my family. My dad ended
- 12:24Speaker 2: up moving back to San Francisco. My mom raised me
- 12:26Speaker 2: in Denver. When I was ten years old, I made
- 12:29Speaker 2: the choice to become a Denver Nuggets fan. I was like,
- 12:32Speaker 2: you know what. The Golden State Warriors were our team
- 12:35Speaker 2: I did. They traded away Tim Hardaway. I didn't like that.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I didn't run. I didn't like run. Tmcbing broken up,
- 12:41Speaker 2: so I was like, you know what, I love the
- 12:42Speaker 2: new They just switched the logo of the Nuggets to
- 12:45Speaker 2: the Mountain. Yes, we had Matumbo, we had Lafonzo Ellis.
- 12:49Speaker 2: There was like a lot of people and I was like,
- 12:51Speaker 2: I'm going to choose the Denver Nuggets because I don't
- 12:54Speaker 2: have any other Denver teams. I didn't like the Rockies.
- 12:57Speaker 2: They're in the same division as the San Francisco Giants,
- 12:59Speaker 2: So I was like, I'm love the Nuggets one of
- 13:02Speaker 2: the most painful decisions I've made, because then I watched
- 13:06Speaker 2: the Nuggets be mid and terrible for so many years,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and then I watched the Warriors explode. And you have
- 13:14Speaker 2: to understand my dad's family. My grandmother specifically stayed a
- 13:17Speaker 2: Warriors fan. Everyone loved the Dubs. You would be in
- 13:20Speaker 2: the Bay Area and everyone's like, oh, the Warriors, They're unbelievable.
- 13:23Speaker 2: They're never gonna lose, and they would always kind of
- 13:25Speaker 2: beat up on the Nuggets, and I was like, damn,
- 13:27Speaker 2: But the Nuggets winning the championship this year felt so
- 13:31Speaker 2: surreal because you were like, I never thought it was
- 13:33Speaker 2: gonna happen. That being said, I do believe if the
- 13:36Speaker 2: forty nine ers won the Super Bowl, I would become
- 13:40Speaker 2: very emotional. I think I think that would I I
- 13:46Speaker 2: was happy when the Nuggets won. I do believe when
- 13:49Speaker 2: you have your team, like your team, you can have
- 13:53Speaker 2: several teams in a city you like, but you always
- 13:56Speaker 2: have one that you're like, it's your favorite child. Yeah,
- 13:58Speaker 2: and you're like, this is this means the world to me.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Twenty nineteen to get into Mike McDaniel, I was very
- 14:06Speaker 2: lucky when Kyle Shanahan took when Kyle Shanahan took the
- 14:09Speaker 2: head coaching job after losing to the Patriots in the
- 14:12Speaker 2: Super Bowl with the Atlanta Falcons. When the forty nine
- 14:15Speaker 2: Ers named John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan head coach GM,
- 14:18Speaker 2: I was like, great. Then I get the text from McDaniel.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I'm a forty nine er. I was like, this is unbelievable.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel, head coach of the Dolphins, is a I
- 14:28Speaker 1: would say, childhood friend, lifelong friend. You described it how
- 14:32Speaker 1: you want.
- 14:33Speaker 2: He described it in a way that I never that
- 14:35Speaker 2: I was really touched by. When I went to a
- 14:37Speaker 2: practice in Miami, this training camp, he introduced me to
- 14:41Speaker 2: one of the coaches is his oldest friend. And I
- 14:44Speaker 2: was like, oh, man, that's so nice. I was like,
- 14:46Speaker 2: that's great. It made me feel old as hell, but
- 14:48Speaker 2: it also was like, yeah, that's so nice.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Are sweet?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he's one of my and he is. He's one
- 14:53Speaker 2: of my oldest friends that I have and I grew
- 14:58Speaker 2: up you know he If you know the story of
- 15:00Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel, him and his mom lived in Greeley, Colorado,
- 15:04Speaker 2: where the Broncos had training camp. He met he lost
- 15:07Speaker 2: a hat at practice because he used to go get interviews.
- 15:10Speaker 2: A man that worked for the Broncos organization went and
- 15:13Speaker 2: bought him the same hat as a Charlotte Hornet's hat
- 15:16Speaker 2: at the mall and then gave it to him. He
- 15:19Speaker 2: went home told his mom about it. His mom wanted
- 15:22Speaker 2: to meet the guy. They met, They hit it off,
- 15:25Speaker 2: They dated, got married. Gary, his stepfather, who worked for
- 15:29Speaker 2: the Broncos, moved Mike and his mom down to They
- 15:33Speaker 2: lived in unincorporated Arapo County aka Centennial. I lived in Aurora,
- 15:38Speaker 2: which is it's the same, and they Mike and I
- 15:42Speaker 2: became friends in seventh grade and became very close in
- 15:44Speaker 2: seventh and eighth and ninth grade, and then have remained
- 15:48Speaker 2: friends till now. You know, well, And.
- 15:51Speaker 1: The wild thing about it is, and I know you've
- 15:53Speaker 1: said this to me before, is you guys as because
- 15:56Speaker 1: when you're that age, you're like twelve thirteen, you're like,
- 15:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna be a I'm gonna be a comedian, I'm
- 16:01Speaker 1: gonna be a football coach, and everybody okay, and then
- 16:05Speaker 1: you are, well, you know.
- 16:06Speaker 2: What's funny is that it's like when you make when
- 16:09Speaker 2: you make statements like that as a kid, you have
- 16:11Speaker 2: to be willing for it to not fall exactly what
- 16:15Speaker 2: it was, because I believe what it was was he
- 16:18Speaker 2: was going to play in the NFL. I was going
- 16:21Speaker 2: to be the biggest comedian in the world. And you're like,
- 16:25Speaker 2: then you scale those down to size and you go like,
- 16:28Speaker 2: what about great head coach and successful, great career comedian.
- 16:34Speaker 2: You know, you're like, let's bring those down a notch.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Let's just chill out on Because when you're in seventh grade,
- 16:38Speaker 2: you're like, I'm going to be the president and also
- 16:41Speaker 2: be the heavyweight champ of the WWE. And then you're like,
- 16:44Speaker 2: chill out, dog, why don't you become a VP of
- 16:47Speaker 2: Merrill Lynch and do pretty well?
- 16:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm what I I'm gonna wind up running the
- 16:51Speaker 1: wrestling event at the VFW. That's how it lands for you.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Know, I got a backyard match where a guy's gonna
- 16:56Speaker 2: get set on fire. That's where I'm gonna be.
- 17:00Speaker 1: The thing that I noticed a lot about because I've
- 17:02Speaker 1: kind of existed in this world at ESPN and here, Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 1: you run into a lot of athletes who would love
- 17:07Speaker 1: to be stand up comedians, and you run into a
- 17:10Speaker 1: lot of stand up comedians are like, I feel like
- 17:12Speaker 1: I would just be really good at being an athlete,
- 17:14Speaker 1: Like is there do you guys have that that shared
- 17:17Speaker 1: like back and forth like loving and kind of living
- 17:21Speaker 1: through each other a little bit.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Oh? Absolutely, one hundred percent. One hundred percent.
- 17:24Speaker 1: He's so funny.
- 17:25Speaker 2: He's he's so funny. And what's what's crazy is in
- 17:27Speaker 2: the offseason he like loves stand up comedy, Like he
- 17:30Speaker 2: like loves it, Like I'll send him I sent him
- 17:32Speaker 2: Joe Lists Special on YouTube, like I'll send him people
- 17:36Speaker 2: that maybe I'm like, oh, I think you would love
- 17:38Speaker 2: this dude, you know, and he'll be like because he's
- 17:40Speaker 2: up at two forty five. Yeah, and he busts his
- 17:44Speaker 2: hump the whole time. But I know there's times where
- 17:47Speaker 2: he's like he texted me before we went out. We
- 17:50Speaker 2: went down to Miami last year for the Browns game,
- 17:53Speaker 2: and I get a text from him at like four
- 17:56Speaker 2: in the morning. He's like, Hey, you're HBO special is
- 17:58Speaker 2: playing right now. I'm watching it, and You're like you
- 18:02Speaker 2: aren't you prepping for the Browns?
- 18:03Speaker 1: You know, ready for this?
- 18:05Speaker 2: Yeah. He's like, well, I've seen the special. I just
- 18:07Speaker 2: there's a couple of bits I want to see and
- 18:09Speaker 2: then I'm gonna go back and you're like, oh, that's awesome,
- 18:11Speaker 2: And there's what he's done for me is I don't know.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I knew. I knew I was an athletic by the
- 18:15Speaker 2: time I hit high school. But what I did realize
- 18:18Speaker 2: with Mike was like I view football sometimes through the
- 18:21Speaker 2: lens of like what what he's explained to me. It
- 18:25Speaker 2: gets interesting in different ways. It's not just like the
- 18:28Speaker 2: collective like let's go team, everybody's everybody's great and everybody
- 18:33Speaker 2: on that side's bad. You just kind of realize all
- 18:35Speaker 2: the intrapersonal relationships and like who's been affected by who
- 18:39Speaker 2: and and how like, you know, he did a fun
- 18:42Speaker 2: thing for the forty nine ers. I don't know if
- 18:44Speaker 2: I'm speaking out of school on this, but I love
- 18:46Speaker 2: that he did this. One season with the forty nine ers.
- 18:49Speaker 2: He told me he would take a play from the
- 18:52Speaker 2: team they were playing the next week, and he would
- 18:55Speaker 2: run it once in a game so that when they
- 18:58Speaker 2: were watching film, they'd be like, is that our play?
- 19:01Speaker 2: He would just do that to mess with them, just
- 19:05Speaker 2: strictly to mess with them. He'd be like, we're gonna
- 19:06Speaker 2: run it once and then you know that was it,
- 19:09Speaker 2: and that's it's so funny. That's him being so funny
- 19:13Speaker 2: through like his you know what he does, but he is.
- 19:17Speaker 2: People ask all the time, They're like, is that really
- 19:18Speaker 2: who he is? I'm like, dude, that is him and
- 19:20Speaker 2: those press conferences and him on the sidelines when he's
- 19:22Speaker 2: miked up, that's one hundred percent Mike.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I have Ben Leeber played for the Chargers and the
- 19:27Speaker 1: Vikings made a very large mistake by befriending me. We've
- 19:34Speaker 1: gotten very close and so the same thing where you
- 19:36Speaker 1: just learn more about the behind the scenes aspects and
- 19:40Speaker 1: the on the field stuff where you're like, oh, like
- 19:42Speaker 1: you go, don't check it down. He's like, what are
- 19:44Speaker 1: you talking about? You're an idiot. That's not how football works.
- 19:48Speaker 1: So you learn all this different stuff.
- 19:51Speaker 2: I remember the first conversation having that with Mike. My
- 19:53Speaker 2: friend Chad Harder and I go to all the games.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Chad and I grew up with Mike friends in high school,
- 19:58Speaker 2: and Chad and I were living together in Tucson. This
- 20:01Speaker 2: is after I graduated from U of A. I was
- 20:03Speaker 2: still doing stand up. He was punting at the University
- 20:05Speaker 2: of Northern Colorado and it came down to Tucson to
- 20:09Speaker 2: stay in shape for audition, for auditions. For it.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Let's go with aud audition.
- 20:17Speaker 2: He had a football audition. That's such a lame showbiz terms.
- 20:22Speaker 1: But hey, damn, will you come help me with my lines?
- 20:24Speaker 2: I need to dude. He kicked the punt one time.
- 20:27Speaker 2: You know how punters can make it go over or
- 20:29Speaker 2: they can make it drop. So I didn't know they
- 20:33Speaker 2: could do that. And I was helping him with one
- 20:35Speaker 2: of his auditions, but he punted the ball and we
- 20:39Speaker 2: were just at like this high school football field in Tucson,
- 20:42Speaker 2: and I'm like I put a cigarette down to catch it,
- 20:45Speaker 2: and h dude, the ball. The ball went up and
- 20:50Speaker 2: then came down right on my face. I mean, just
- 20:53Speaker 2: zero down. And we're like, well, that's it for the day.
- 20:56Speaker 2: We're not going to run lines anymore. You just busted
- 20:58Speaker 2: my face.
- 21:00Speaker 1: When I was working at ESPN and we were like
- 21:02Speaker 1: I desperately wanted the Vikings to just built a new facility,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and I was just like I just need to just
- 21:07Speaker 1: get me in the building, just get me. I can't
- 21:09Speaker 1: remember what I pitched some dumb shit, Like hey, what
- 21:12Speaker 1: if I did? They were like, we get it, we
- 21:16Speaker 1: love you, just go do it. And so one of
- 21:19Speaker 1: the things I did is it is basically letting me
- 21:21Speaker 1: loose in the facility. Was they put me in pads
- 21:23Speaker 1: and I was going to catch a punt, dude. I
- 21:25Speaker 1: from that moment on, I was like whatever, somebody could
- 21:29Speaker 1: not even catch the ball, and like it's it's a
- 21:32Speaker 1: very difficult task. It is a terrifying task. I don't terrify.
- 21:36Speaker 2: But I remember McDaniel called us. He was in Houston
- 21:41Speaker 2: with Kubiak okay, and we were like asking him who
- 21:46Speaker 2: are they going to draft? It was like Vince Young,
- 21:48Speaker 2: Mattliner at Jay Cutler, it was that draft, Reggie Bush.
- 21:51Speaker 2: It was like unbelievable. And we were like there were
- 21:53Speaker 2: the number one pick. We're like, who are you guys
- 21:55Speaker 2: gonna take? Who are you gonna take? This was day
- 21:58Speaker 2: of the draft. The draft is already in. Apparently they
- 22:00Speaker 2: had already like they knew they had already contacted him.
- 22:02Speaker 2: But McDaniel was like Mario Williams and we were like who.
- 22:08Speaker 2: He's like Mario Williams from NCI State and we're like,
- 22:11Speaker 2: who is that guy? Why would you do that? We
- 22:13Speaker 2: were like calling him out, being like that's stupid. You
- 22:15Speaker 2: should draft Bush, you should draft Vince Young or whatever. Yeah, well,
- 22:20Speaker 2: it was just the way his mind was. He was like, well,
- 22:21Speaker 2: Kubiak explained it to us, when you're playing Peyton Manning
- 22:24Speaker 2: twice a year, you need someone that's going to get
- 22:26Speaker 2: in his face and disrupt him from destroying your team.
- 22:28Speaker 2: And you're like, okay, So now when people make draft decisions,
- 22:33Speaker 2: I'm like, well, they clearly know something. They're clear they're
- 22:36Speaker 2: not just doing it to be like this will piss
- 22:38Speaker 2: the fan base off. They're like drafting for a reason.
- 22:40Speaker 2: But I remember him telling us that that was like
- 22:42Speaker 2: the first moment of us learning from him of like, oh, okay,
- 22:46Speaker 2: you like, you guys know way more than we did.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And he was like, you just want to keep it
- 22:50Speaker 2: to that. And that's always how it's been where it's like,
- 22:54Speaker 2: that's not my business. But man, I love I love
- 22:57Speaker 2: hearing him talk about it, and whenever I see him,
- 23:01Speaker 2: you know, during the season or offseason, it's always interesting
- 23:03Speaker 2: to hear him talk his business.
- 23:05Speaker 1: And I think you're I think you deserve a fair
- 23:09Speaker 1: amount of credit for the amount of chill with which
- 23:12Speaker 1: you've handled yourself because I've seen pictures and I would
- 23:16Speaker 1: have known if somebody, like if something had gone awry,
- 23:18Speaker 1: and like, let me tell you this. My best friend
- 23:21Speaker 1: from childhood runs a restaurant inside a hotel that you've
- 23:27Speaker 1: never heard of, and whenever I go there, I act
- 23:31Speaker 1: unruly like I He's like this, sigh, you can't come
- 23:35Speaker 1: to my job. He's like, you can't just walk in
- 23:37Speaker 1: the kitchen. The fact that you have maintained your composure
- 23:42Speaker 1: on the field, like I've seen you on the field
- 23:44Speaker 1: of the sideline of Dolphins games before the game and
- 23:47Speaker 1: you have it together, and I believe you deserve a
- 23:50Speaker 1: lot of credit for that.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I mean, it's just I'm it genuinely is one of
- 23:53Speaker 2: those things where no matter what happens, it's it's still
- 23:57Speaker 2: surreal to this day. And the best part is he's
- 24:00Speaker 2: just warming up. Like the best part is he's.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Just like, that's what I was gonna get at is
- 24:05Speaker 1: and we'll get back to let's get back to Niners
- 24:07Speaker 1: I got but we also have to talk about I
- 24:08Speaker 1: believe you were at the Broncos game, weren't you.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I was at seventy I was at seventy
- 24:13Speaker 2: to twenty.
- 24:14Speaker 1: So we're gonna discuss that, and that's a part of
- 24:16Speaker 1: this question here. Like it's hard to even put it
- 24:19Speaker 1: into words, but he's this culmination of everything that's been
- 24:24Speaker 1: happening in the league, like the the modern offenses and
- 24:28Speaker 1: the way with which these young head coaches are changing
- 24:30Speaker 1: the game. It's like he came around and I'm trying
- 24:34Speaker 1: to explain, like you explain it in a in a
- 24:37Speaker 1: stand up way. Right, you have a bunch of people
- 24:40Speaker 1: doing a certain thing, and all of a sudden, one
- 24:41Speaker 1: guy You're like, oh, none of us could do it.
- 24:43Speaker 1: It's he's the like, yeah, it's Jimmy Parto's crowd work, right, Yeah,
- 24:48Speaker 1: it's He's He's just doing this thing that I think
- 24:51Speaker 1: five years from now, ten years from now, you're gonna
- 24:53Speaker 1: be like, this dude changed the entire league. Like he's
- 24:56Speaker 1: running plays his old boss is running the next week,
- 25:00Speaker 1: he's like pulling schemes out and then the best coaches
- 25:03Speaker 1: in the league are like, what's up, Okay, we'll do that.
- 25:05Speaker 2: He actually showed me that. He actually showed me that.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I went down to the to the Dolphins Broncos game.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Katie and I went down there a little early because
- 25:12Speaker 2: Katie was doing Levatard and then we were gonna hang out.
- 25:15Speaker 2: But we got in Thursday and McDaniel's you know, wife,
- 25:18Speaker 2: Katie was She was like, well, why don't you guys
- 25:20Speaker 2: come over and watch the game? It was forty nine
- 25:22Speaker 2: Ers Giants, and so I wore my Niner stuff over there,
- 25:25Speaker 2: and it was it was like, you know, McDaniel was like, oh,
- 25:29Speaker 2: cool shirt, and you're like, yeah, I still love him.
- 25:32Speaker 2: I was like, I know you, but you left. Katie
- 25:34Speaker 2: even said that, she goes, he's the one that left.
- 25:36Speaker 2: You should you shouldn't feel bad. But what was interesting
- 25:39Speaker 2: was like seeing kind of him watch his old team
- 25:44Speaker 2: and assess certain things that maybe that me or you
- 25:50Speaker 2: would never pick up on on a team. But what
- 25:52Speaker 2: I really realized was is that, like he's a culmination
- 25:56Speaker 2: of your You absolutely nailed it where the NFL is going.
- 26:00Speaker 2: But I think a lot of credit has to go
- 26:04Speaker 2: not only to Kyle Shanahan, but to Mike Shanahan. Yes,
- 26:07Speaker 2: I think Mike Shanahan coached in a way where he
- 26:11Speaker 2: let his assistance, He let his coordinators have their own personality,
- 26:18Speaker 2: be themselves. They didn't have to be this like exact
- 26:22Speaker 2: replica of what a coach should be. And I think
- 26:26Speaker 2: that paid off of because when you look back to
- 26:28Speaker 2: those those Washington coaches, that Washington coaching.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Still that that staff is dominating the league.
- 26:34Speaker 2: It's insane. You got Kyle, you have Mike, you have
- 26:37Speaker 2: Matt lafleur, you have.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Our guy, Kevin O'Connell.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Kevin O'Connell McVeigh. There's like guys where you're just like, oh, well,
- 26:46Speaker 2: that clearly all that's like when you know, and this
- 26:48Speaker 2: is this will link back to comedy, when you see
- 26:50Speaker 2: a group. We always talk about the Boston group that
- 26:53Speaker 2: came up to New York in the nineties. That was
- 26:55Speaker 2: Bill Bird, Dane Cook, Patrise O'Neill, Bobby Kelly, Al del
- 26:59Speaker 2: Benny and all those guys, and you're like, oh, well,
- 27:01Speaker 2: that made sense because they come in these like groups.
- 27:04Speaker 2: And I think it happens in groups, and I think
- 27:07Speaker 2: people have been talking about it for years now, especially
- 27:10Speaker 2: with McVeagh and Shanahan and the success they've had, and
- 27:13Speaker 2: then Lafleur in the success he was having in Green Bay.
- 27:16Speaker 2: And it was interesting because I was kind of sitting
- 27:19Speaker 2: back being like McDaniel's coming. You can give of all
- 27:24Speaker 2: the credit you want, but I know, the second McDaniel
- 27:27Speaker 2: gets a shot, he's coming. That guy has been ready
- 27:30Speaker 2: for this, that guy has helped out so much, and
- 27:34Speaker 2: in San Francisco, which I obviously loved, but it just
- 27:38Speaker 2: was a matter of time. It was a matter of
- 27:40Speaker 2: time before he got his chance. And to see him
- 27:44Speaker 2: last year do well and kind of turn around to
- 27:49Speaker 2: and make Miami, you know, a threat in the AFC East.
- 27:53Speaker 2: And then when I got to go down there in
- 27:55Speaker 2: the off season when I was at the Daniel Beach
- 27:57Speaker 2: improv and they were in training camp and I went.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I got to see him before practice and talk to
- 28:02Speaker 2: him after practice, and I asked him. I was just like,
- 28:04Speaker 2: how you feeling. He's like, I'm comfortable, And I was like,
- 28:07Speaker 2: that's going to mean that's going to mean so much
- 28:10Speaker 2: because McDaniel, you know, like a good comic, McDaniel knows
- 28:17Speaker 2: where do, what he needs to improve and how to
- 28:20Speaker 2: improve it. And I think when they went and got
- 28:22Speaker 2: Vic Fangio, a former forty nine er decordinator, former Bronco
- 28:26Speaker 2: head coach, to kind of control the defense, I think
- 28:29Speaker 2: it has kind of made McDaniel go into sicico mode
- 28:32Speaker 2: where he's like, now I can run all these crazy
- 28:34Speaker 2: plays and I can put all these people in and
- 28:37Speaker 2: you know he's also Italian. The thing that's overlooked about
- 28:40Speaker 2: McDaniel that no one talks about is how insane of
- 28:43Speaker 2: a talent evaluator he is. Because now everyone's talking about
- 28:47Speaker 2: a chain and you're like, yeah, he's been doing that
- 28:50Speaker 2: for years. He did it in Washington, he did it
- 28:53Speaker 2: in Atlanta, he did it in San Francisco, and now
- 28:55Speaker 2: he's doing it in Miami where he knows kind of
- 28:58Speaker 2: what he needs out of a play or Raheem Moster
- 29:01Speaker 2: killing It is one of my favorite things because after
- 29:04Speaker 2: the NFC Championship game in twenty nineteen at McDaniel, I
- 29:08Speaker 2: went which I got to go do and got to
- 29:10Speaker 2: go on the field with him after they beat the Packers.
- 29:12Speaker 2: It was unbelievable. We were at his house and I
- 29:15Speaker 2: was asking him about Raheem Moster because I saw him
- 29:17Speaker 2: have a moment with Mostert down on the field, and
- 29:20Speaker 2: I was like, what did you tell him? And he
- 29:22Speaker 2: was like, I just told him. I always knew this
- 29:24Speaker 2: is who he was. I always knew this is what
- 29:27Speaker 2: he was capable of, and I just wanted to give
- 29:29Speaker 2: him credit for how hard he worked knowing that he
- 29:32Speaker 2: knew that and saw it out, because there was just
- 29:34Speaker 2: this really emotional moment and you were like, that is insane.
- 29:37Speaker 2: But then McDaniel tells me, He's like, I've wanted Mostert
- 29:40Speaker 2: since he was an undrafted free agent and when I
- 29:42Speaker 2: was in Atlanta. He's like, I've been trying to get
- 29:43Speaker 2: Mostert on my squad since the Falcons, and then now
- 29:47Speaker 2: he here, he is in Miami, and you know, you kind.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Of have got eleven touchdowns.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but you got Moster, you got a chan and
- 29:53Speaker 2: Jeff Wilson Junior, another guy that McDaniel saw in San Francisco.
- 29:58Speaker 2: If McDaniel and I aren't friends, there'd probably be a
- 30:02Speaker 2: part of me that's a little upset because when he
- 30:03Speaker 2: left San Francisco, he knew who to take. Yeah, he
- 30:06Speaker 2: knew who to bring with him to build up this team,
- 30:09Speaker 2: and it was like so cool to see it. I'm
- 30:12Speaker 2: so proud of the guy, and I'm very excited for
- 30:15Speaker 2: the Sunday night football game against the Eagles because after
- 30:19Speaker 2: they broke brock Perty's elbow, I've just wanted revenge on
- 30:22Speaker 2: the Eagles by any means.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Necessary, even if it comes via your friend coaching the Dolphins.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Hey, dude, sometimes you got to have a friend beat
- 30:30Speaker 2: up your bully.
- 30:30Speaker 1: If you can't, you got to get it where you
- 30:32Speaker 1: can get it.
- 30:32Speaker 2: And you know what, December third is a while away,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but I'm excited for December third, Niners at Eagles.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I think he's the king of maximizing what's available. Like
- 30:42Speaker 1: it's like he looks at what's available to him, the resources.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It's like all that crazy shit he did with Trent
- 30:47Speaker 1: Williams pulling Trent Williams out, and people don't realize that
- 30:50Speaker 1: was him. That was him. And so watching what he's
- 30:54Speaker 1: doing down there with the guys he has, it's just
- 30:57Speaker 1: it's just incredible.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I'll give you the example of the playoff game last
- 31:01Speaker 2: year Dolphins at Bills. He had Skyler Thompson and we
- 31:06Speaker 2: stayed Chad and I stayed at the hotel connected to him,
- 31:09Speaker 2: you know, And he came in and messed with us
- 31:12Speaker 2: before he went to the stadium, and I was like,
- 31:14Speaker 2: how you feeling, and he goes, I'm gonna be honest.
- 31:18Speaker 2: The first half of the week, I was like a
- 31:20Speaker 2: little filled with anxiety and panic because I have my
- 31:23Speaker 2: third string quarterback against arguably the best team in the AFC,
- 31:28Speaker 2: and then it just clicked, Oh man, this is fun,
- 31:31Speaker 2: this is fun. And then they go down seventeen, they
- 31:34Speaker 2: come back, they almost beat the Bills in Buffalo with
- 31:38Speaker 2: a third string quarterback, and it was like watching him
- 31:42Speaker 2: and his attitude has helped me with comedy, just be like,
- 31:48Speaker 2: oh yeah. Sometimes you got to realize, like this is
- 31:50Speaker 2: all fun. We're all playing with house money, and sometimes
- 31:54Speaker 2: you forget that if you have a job you love,
- 31:56Speaker 2: sometimes you get so down and out about tiny things
- 32:00Speaker 2: that you forget the big picture and you're like, oh,
- 32:01Speaker 2: this is great, this is unbelievable.
- 32:03Speaker 1: It's it's absolutely because you I find that all the time.
- 32:06Speaker 1: We're like, oh my god, the flight or the show,
- 32:08Speaker 1: like whatever it is, dog or dog.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Shit in Rochester, that's where I'm going this weekend, and
- 32:13Speaker 2: I'm like, no one's gonna show up. And then you
- 32:15Speaker 2: go You're like, oh, this this is the best job.
- 32:17Speaker 1: In the world. I get to go, I get to
- 32:18Speaker 1: go have fun.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I get to go be a silly boy for five
- 32:21Speaker 2: shows and pay rent. Like that's fine, I'm fine with.
- 32:25Speaker 1: That this weekend. Here's here's the problem this. I warned
- 32:28Speaker 1: everybody there was a reason I put a warning on
- 32:31Speaker 1: the front of this show is because I knew what
- 32:34Speaker 1: we were capable of. So let's talk. Let's talk Niners Vikings.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Uh.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I want to talk a little bit about your current team,
- 32:40Speaker 1: but the one moment I have to ask you about, Yeah,
- 32:44Speaker 1: because in those dark years, you know, in the Abyss,
- 32:49Speaker 1: when you were right. I think it was right before.
- 32:51Speaker 1: And I know a lot of people I know Huntsberger
- 32:53Speaker 1: and other people are like, they talk about the Singletary
- 32:57Speaker 1: years as though they were years they spent a lot
- 33:00Speaker 1: on a mountain.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Can't win with them, can't win with them? I love it, dude, Singletary.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Singletary does not get enough credit for his talent evaluation.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah, for building the roster that Harbaugh ran.
- 33:13Speaker 2: With him and Mike Nolan mm hmm. Not my future
- 33:17Speaker 2: father in law, but the former head coach of the
- 33:20Speaker 2: forty nine ers went out and got pieces that Harball
- 33:26Speaker 2: was able to come in and kind of with Vic Fangio,
- 33:29Speaker 2: put in a pile and go like Oh Navarro, Bowman,
- 33:31Speaker 2: Patrick Willis, Dante Whitner, all these guys that could go.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Justin Smith getting him from the Bengals, drafting a young
- 33:41Speaker 2: Alden Smith, getting all these guys that you were like,
- 33:44Speaker 2: oh my god, oh my god, we're winning. Like it
- 33:47Speaker 2: wasn't like like Kyle Shanahan, it was zero to eight.
- 33:50Speaker 2: First season, you put in Jimmy G. He rips five. Okay,
- 33:54Speaker 2: Jimmy G's the real deal. Let's give him a huge contract,
- 33:57Speaker 2: and that kind of built that was able to carry them.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Moment with Harbaugh, it was literally he came in and
- 34:03Speaker 2: we started winning and no one expected it. Yeah, all
- 34:07Speaker 2: of a sudden, Frank Gore is running well with under
- 34:10Speaker 2: Greg Roman's offense and Alex Smith is a game manager
- 34:13Speaker 2: and he's doing really well, but this defense is just
- 34:17Speaker 2: killing people and just shutting people down. That was like,
- 34:21Speaker 2: oh my god, we're oh my god, oh my god,
- 34:23Speaker 2: we're back. Week one. The first game Harbaugh one was
- 34:26Speaker 2: against the Seahawks, who had just kind of had us
- 34:29Speaker 2: for like since since the divisions had been realigned. It
- 34:33Speaker 2: was just like the Seahawks had had our number. And
- 34:35Speaker 2: then you just come in and you beat Pete Carroll
- 34:37Speaker 2: for the first and you're like, all right, let's go.
- 34:39Speaker 2: And it was just that kind of thing. It must
- 34:41Speaker 2: have felt the same way you guys did when you
- 34:43Speaker 2: got Farv.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And so now let's bring all worlds together. Yeah, because
- 34:48Speaker 1: right before you guys went on that run and built
- 34:51Speaker 1: we had it is what we felt like because we
- 34:52Speaker 1: had Adrian Peterson. We had we had gotten Steve Hutchison,
- 34:56Speaker 1: probably the most underrated sign in maybe the last three
- 35:00Speaker 1: forty years in the NFL. We put a Hall of
- 35:02Speaker 1: Famer at left guard. You have this unbelievable defense that
- 35:05Speaker 1: doesn't allow anyone to get a hundred years.
- 35:07Speaker 2: By the way, you guys took him from Seattle.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Yes, sir, we helped you out of the.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Reason Sean Alexander fell off.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yes, that's right, and so and then you stacked Farv
- 35:16Speaker 1: on top of it. But everybody kind of forgets that.
- 35:18Speaker 1: The first couple games of the far season we won,
- 35:22Speaker 1: we were playing okay, but it just didn't look right.
- 35:26Speaker 1: And no matter how many people want to deny it,
- 35:28Speaker 1: there were people that were like, is this the right decision?
- 35:31Speaker 1: And then you came to Minnesota.
- 35:34Speaker 2: I got I remember that game and it was a
- 35:36Speaker 2: it was a fight, and it was like, okay, we're
- 35:39Speaker 2: in it. I remember it because it was before Sunday ticket.
- 35:43Speaker 2: I was at a bar and I was still drinking
- 35:46Speaker 2: and Farve hit your tight end in the back of
- 35:49Speaker 2: the end zone.
- 35:50Speaker 1: It wasn't even a tight end. It was it was
- 35:53Speaker 1: Greg greg Lewis. No, it was a guy that we'd
- 35:56Speaker 1: we had signed I think that week Greg Lewis. It
- 35:59Speaker 1: was far Greg Lewis, and it was it was You're right,
- 36:03Speaker 1: it was back of the end zone. It was toe touch.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I remember being in the bar being like, that wasn't
- 36:07Speaker 2: a catch. I remember screaming that at the TV, being like,
- 36:10Speaker 2: that's not No.
- 36:10Speaker 1: One thought it was a catch. No, Like we all
- 36:12Speaker 1: got excited, but we're like, well, here comes the replay
- 36:15Speaker 1: to ruin it.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Oh my god. I remember that run and then I
- 36:18Speaker 2: think you guys were the favorite against the Saints, right.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Don't want to do it. I'd like to move on.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I just wanted to talk about the happiness that was
- 36:29Speaker 1: that moment.
- 36:29Speaker 2: It was one of the greatest MC Championship games of
- 36:31Speaker 2: all time. I'm sorry, it just was. It was like
- 36:34Speaker 2: no dog in the fight. I watched that game at
- 36:37Speaker 2: a bar with Joe List and Nate Bargetzi and we
- 36:40Speaker 2: sat there watching it and Nate this is how it
- 36:44Speaker 2: always worked back in the day, when we were all
- 36:45Speaker 2: out drinking. I would sit in the middle, and inevitably
- 36:49Speaker 2: Nate would find a point and Joe would find a
- 36:51Speaker 2: point and they would argue about it and I would
- 36:54Speaker 2: have to sit there like a referee and break it up.
- 36:57Speaker 2: But I remember, I think it was I think it
- 37:00Speaker 2: was Nate that was like, this is the greatest NYC
- 37:02Speaker 2: Championship game of all time. And then it just started
- 37:05Speaker 2: a conversation where you know.
- 37:06Speaker 1: We never feel that way here because of the pain
- 37:08Speaker 1: associated with it, But if you're able to step away
- 37:10Speaker 1: from it and you go all these turnovers, all this
- 37:13Speaker 1: crazy back and forth, they drive, they drive down. I've
- 37:17Speaker 1: said this on the show before. When Farv through that
- 37:20Speaker 1: that pass to Sidney Rice on the last drive and
- 37:22Speaker 1: he took it off the field, I made you're not
- 37:25Speaker 1: gonna understand this with your lineage. But I had this
- 37:30Speaker 1: moment where I literally in my head, I didn't verbalize it.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I was like, we're going to the super Bowl, yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 1: and and then to get to twelve minute.
- 37:38Speaker 2: I just I'm gonna tell you right now. I had
- 37:40Speaker 2: that same exact feeling when my beautiful fiance got me
- 37:44Speaker 2: tickets to the twenty nineteen Super Bowl forty nine Ers
- 37:47Speaker 2: Chiefs Oh we were up by ten. I really was, like,
- 37:51Speaker 2: I think McDaniel's about to win a super Bowl. By
- 37:54Speaker 2: the way, just for future reference, I will never in
- 37:57Speaker 2: my life say McDaniel's gonna win a Super Bowl until
- 38:03Speaker 2: there is zero on the clock and they are lifting
- 38:06Speaker 2: him up because twice now sigh, twice Falcons versus the
- 38:11Speaker 2: Patriots in the first half. At the halftime, I go, cool,
- 38:15Speaker 2: McDaniel's gonna get a ring. Patriots came back, Chiefs Niners.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I'm not saying. So You're never hearing that out of
- 38:24Speaker 2: me until it happens, and until I know the game
- 38:27Speaker 2: is over and the confetti is until he is in
- 38:30Speaker 2: a shower of confetti, will I that's the next time
- 38:34Speaker 2: I will say that.
- 38:34Speaker 1: That's welcome to the psyche of a Vikings fan. Oh
- 38:37Speaker 1: my god, that is That is how we live all
- 38:39Speaker 1: the time and forever.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I mean, especially with ninety eight and then yeah, the
- 38:44Speaker 2: nine NFC Championship game.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't, I don't. We can talk about well,
- 38:49Speaker 1: we'll just keep moving. Let's talk about we were at
- 38:52Speaker 1: Montreal together.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, twenty eleven.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Let's talk about if we're at Montreal together. And I
- 38:59Speaker 1: I like you said to me, like someday I'm gonna
- 39:01Speaker 1: be the voice of the NFL Network's top one hundred
- 39:03Speaker 1: players that have been like, hey, guys, you know Dan
- 39:06Speaker 1: is insane.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Yeah, he's out of my mind.
- 39:09Speaker 1: That's insane.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. I owed all to former NFL Films
- 39:14Speaker 2: producer Paul Manusky. I probably butchered his last name, but
- 39:17Speaker 2: I just know him as Paul he is. He no
- 39:19Speaker 2: longer works in NFL films, which is a crime. It
- 39:22Speaker 2: truly is a crime, because he was one of the
- 39:24Speaker 2: best producers I've ever worked with on anything. And he
- 39:28Speaker 2: was a fan of the Bonfire on Sirius XM, which
- 39:31Speaker 2: is still Monday through Thursday five to seven pm with
- 39:33Speaker 2: Big Jafferson and Robert Kelly. I'll still plug the show.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Serious Serious XM Faction Talk one oh three. He was like, hey, Man,
- 39:42Speaker 2: would you have any interest in doing some like voiceover
- 39:44Speaker 2: for NFL films? And I was like, that's all I've
- 39:46Speaker 2: ever wanted to do. I would love to do that.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Besides comedy, all I've ever wanted to do was those
- 39:50Speaker 2: recap videos where you're like and the forty nine ers
- 39:53Speaker 2: knew that that they would be different from the rest,
- 39:57Speaker 2: and he said, listen, we're doing NF Top one hundred
- 40:01Speaker 2: for NFL Films. It's gonna be on NFL network, which
- 40:03Speaker 2: you want to do it? And I was like, yeah, dude,
- 40:05Speaker 2: that sounds so good. He's like, well, we got Wendell
- 40:08Speaker 2: Pierce from the Wire doing like the longer stuff, but
- 40:11Speaker 2: we need someone that's like intermitted, like in between those.
- 40:15Speaker 2: We need you. And I was like, sign me up.
- 40:17Speaker 2: And I've been doing it for seven seasons now. Yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 2: What's crazy is now I find out the list and
- 40:25Speaker 2: I tell McDaniel how many dolphins got on it. Now
- 40:28Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm going to tell you who's on it
- 40:29Speaker 2: and where they're at so you can tell them because
- 40:31Speaker 2: so they'll know before. But my friend Chad Hard, who
- 40:34Speaker 2: I brought up, was sitting at home watching it. This
- 40:38Speaker 2: is like twenty and sixteen, twenty seventeen, and there's a
- 40:41Speaker 2: clip where I talk about the Davonte Freeman and this
- 40:44Speaker 2: is when he was with the Falcons, and I go like,
- 40:47Speaker 2: number thirty two's Davonte Freeman, whose ability to get away
- 40:51Speaker 2: from the and then it cuts to McDaniel coaching up
- 40:55Speaker 2: Davonta Freeman on the Falcons and Chad sent me and mcdanie,
- 41:00Speaker 2: you know the clip and he's like, it goes from
- 41:02Speaker 2: SODA's voice over to you coaching. He was like, I
- 41:05Speaker 2: was freaking out in my house and You're like, yeah,
- 41:07Speaker 2: that's awesome. That's like the coolest one.
- 41:09Speaker 1: That's like, that's the pinnacle moment.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the moment where you're like, that's insane
- 41:13Speaker 2: that one of our buddies is at home and he
- 41:15Speaker 2: hears me do the voiceover into a clip of McDaniel coaching,
- 41:18Speaker 2: and you're like, come on, dude, come.
- 41:20Speaker 1: On, let's talk. Let's and well, you got to get off.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I know you got to get off here, but let's
- 41:24Speaker 1: close with your lovely fiance. Yes, who I care about
- 41:31Speaker 1: A great deal.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I mean you guys, but you guys came through the
- 41:33Speaker 2: mud together doing Snapchat sports. I know about your guys'
- 41:37Speaker 2: time and the suck at ESPN.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I always thought I was a hard worker, and I
- 41:41Speaker 1: remember the first day at ESPN, I did the night show.
- 41:45Speaker 1: She did the morning show, and I walked in from
- 41:47Speaker 1: essentially my shift, and she was sitting like show long
- 41:53Speaker 1: put out. Her show had gone out hours ago. She
- 41:55Speaker 1: was sitting on the floor of a mutual friend, the
- 41:59Speaker 1: incredible Steve Bray band.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I love Steve Brayband and shout out Ashley Brayband
- 42:04Speaker 2: and Ashley.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Both of them were Ashley, both of them incredibly skilled
- 42:08Speaker 1: at ESPN.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Ashley was ended up being Katie's producer on Always Late
- 42:13Speaker 2: and Steve is now with the WWE.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Which is, yeah, that's a big win for you. And
- 42:19Speaker 1: so the I remember she was sitting on the floor
- 42:22Speaker 1: like just ripping ideas, and I, you know, it was
- 42:25Speaker 1: like when you walk into a green room and you
- 42:27Speaker 1: see like and I always knew she was talented and
- 42:30Speaker 1: I was a fan of hers, and I was excited
- 42:32Speaker 1: to meet her. But you know when you walk into
- 42:34Speaker 1: a green room and you're like, oh, is Chappelle in
- 42:37Speaker 1: there just working on his bits before the show, and
- 42:39Speaker 1: you're like, god, damn it. You're like, I am gonna
- 42:41Speaker 1: have to work, dude. She's so good.
- 42:45Speaker 2: I opened for Ali Wong at the Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas,
- 42:49Speaker 2: And this is right after Baby Cobra came out, and
- 42:51Speaker 2: I've known ally for a while and I opened for
- 42:54Speaker 2: Ali and she rips it like absolutely destroys. And then
- 42:58Speaker 2: after the show, I'm like, oh, you want to hang out?
- 43:00Speaker 2: And she just goes and listens to the show and
- 43:02Speaker 2: tries to add tags to the bits because she was
- 43:05Speaker 2: doing a second show and I was like, yeah, I don't.
- 43:08Speaker 2: I don't work hard. I don't work hard at all.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And you know what's funny is Katie's That is absolutely
- 43:13Speaker 2: Katie's personality. She is one of the hardest workers I know,
- 43:16Speaker 2: Like she is like a She's got like the mindset
- 43:19Speaker 2: of a hunting dog where you're like, give her a
- 43:21Speaker 2: smell and she'll just she'll just go after it. Like
- 43:25Speaker 2: she's on Celebrity Jeopardy right now. She just advanced to
- 43:28Speaker 2: the semifinal.
- 43:29Speaker 1: She is Rosie Perez. I know you, I know you,
- 43:31Speaker 1: I know you said that, But like anybody who's seen
- 43:33Speaker 1: herund there, You're like, what is happening? How is she
- 43:36Speaker 1: this good at it?
- 43:37Speaker 2: And I'm telling you right now, if you're in the
- 43:38Speaker 2: semifinals of Celebrity Jeopardy, get ready because I watch her
- 43:41Speaker 2: study and I'm like, You're gonna body, everybody. She's just
- 43:46Speaker 2: like her. Katie's Jeopardy training montage is clubber Lang and
- 43:50Speaker 2: Rocky three, where like all the other celebrities are at like,
- 43:54Speaker 2: you know, like a golden gym, like barely they're like, oh,
- 43:57Speaker 2: I love this, and then Katy's like, em, she's just
- 44:01Speaker 2: doing pull ups just like nails. It's wild. I'm watching
- 44:04Speaker 2: your study. I'm like, she's gonna body everybody in this
- 44:07Speaker 2: Celebrity Jeopardy semifinal coming up.
- 44:09Speaker 1: It's a weird spot for you, because I know, the
- 44:12Speaker 1: thing that is cool about my house is I'm the
- 44:15Speaker 1: funniest guy in it, undisputedly.
- 44:17Speaker 2: There's been moments where she says stuff where I go like,
- 44:19Speaker 2: you know, that's like a full bit, right, and she's like, oh.
- 44:23Speaker 1: It's wild. We did this thing where she like it
- 44:28Speaker 1: was we were doing fake brackets. Yeah, right, fake brackets
- 44:31Speaker 1: for March Madness, and you know, we walked in to
- 44:36Speaker 1: start filming and it was one of those things where
- 44:38Speaker 1: everyone every response she had and everything she said, I
- 44:42Speaker 1: was like, should I be a comic? Is that what
- 44:44Speaker 1: I should do with my life? Yeah, I'd probably be
- 44:47Speaker 1: a teacher from now on. She was so funny.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Oh she's hilarious, and it's it's like one of the
- 44:53Speaker 2: greatest things is finding someone like her to be in
- 44:56Speaker 2: love with. That I'm just like, oh, you're the you.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Just every day she makes me laugh and away room
- 45:00Speaker 2: I'm like, this is the best. This just rules, this
- 45:03Speaker 2: is and also you'll enjoy this because you know her
- 45:06Speaker 2: one final McDaniel story. I knew he was leaving the
- 45:10Speaker 2: Niners right through him and his wife. I kind of
- 45:13Speaker 2: knew that they were going to explore him being a
- 45:15Speaker 2: head coach. And he was in the kitchen and Katie goes,
- 45:19Speaker 2: I go, I think McDaniel's leaving the Niners, and she goes, oh,
- 45:23Speaker 2: that's so awesome. Just don't end up in the AFC
- 45:25Speaker 2: East because she's a Pats fan. And I was like, yeah, yeah.
- 45:29Speaker 2: And then he got hired by the Dolphins and Katie goes,
- 45:31Speaker 2: no Dolphins stuff, no Dolphin stuff in this house, and
- 45:34Speaker 2: I was like, all right. And so i've over the
- 45:36Speaker 2: past two seasons, I've able to begin in three items
- 45:39Speaker 2: of merch. I have a T shirt, a sweatshirt, and
- 45:41Speaker 2: I just ordered a new sweatshirt because it's really cool.
- 45:44Speaker 2: But at the we were talking about the Broncos Dolphins game.
- 45:49Speaker 2: That felt so good to watch because I remember when
- 45:52Speaker 2: McDaniel knew he was going to leave the forty nine ers,
- 45:54Speaker 2: the Broncos wanted nothing to do with him, no interview,
- 45:58Speaker 2: and he was a ball boy there. He was like,
- 46:00Speaker 2: it made the most sense for h him to go
- 46:02Speaker 2: back and turn that organization around, and they didn't. And
- 46:05Speaker 2: then he hung seventy seventy and then he took a knee.
- 46:10Speaker 2: He still showed grace even though he had the knife
- 46:14Speaker 2: at their throat and he removed it. I love it.
- 46:18Speaker 2: I love it. I told my clup line after the game,
- 46:21Speaker 2: I wrote, Broncos, that's gonna be the best breakfast they've
- 46:24Speaker 2: ever had in their lives. Then they put the gun
- 46:26Speaker 2: to the to the liquor store guy said, I was like,
- 46:29Speaker 2: that's gonna be the best breakfast. You just save them,
- 46:32Speaker 2: you know, advanced Joseph, that's gonna be the best breakfast
- 46:34Speaker 2: of his life. But yeah, it's insane. It's like, but
- 46:38Speaker 2: forty nine ers Vikings, I know we got to go.
- 46:41Speaker 2: I love Kirk Cousins. I love him. I know how
- 46:45Speaker 2: good he is because of how much McDaniel and shanahan
- 46:48Speaker 2: have talked about him and his time in Washington and
- 46:51Speaker 2: how much they enjoyed coaching him, and how great he is.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Like there's always that rumor that Cousins that shanahan or
- 46:58Speaker 2: McDaniel are gonna go for cousins. I think that's a
- 47:01Speaker 2: sign that you got a keeper right there, when you're like, oh,
- 47:03Speaker 2: this guy stays even killed. Even with your record right now,
- 47:08Speaker 2: I don't you guys are still a threat. You're still
- 47:10Speaker 2: a threat. I think there's a lot of parts of
- 47:12Speaker 2: the Vikings team that's like have been building over years,
- 47:15Speaker 2: and I think similar to the Lions, I think the
- 47:18Speaker 2: Vikings are kind of that upnext mentality. I think the
- 47:21Speaker 2: Bears are in disarray. I think the Packers are. They
- 47:24Speaker 2: have to do that reset like they did after.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Cut them down, cut him down, and.
- 47:29Speaker 2: It's like that Monday night football game is gonna It's
- 47:32Speaker 2: gonna be interesting to see how the forty nine ers
- 47:33Speaker 2: respond after losing to the Browns and how comfortable the
- 47:37Speaker 2: Vikings are just in general, playing a very good team,
- 47:42Speaker 2: playing a very solid team.
- 47:45Speaker 1: It's going to be It's always some fans want, you know,
- 47:49Speaker 1: stack w's that's the point. Get the best, get the
- 47:52Speaker 1: best you know place you can in the postseason, then
- 47:54Speaker 1: see what happens. But I always love the moments when
- 47:57Speaker 1: you get to see where your current version of your
- 47:59Speaker 1: team team stacks up against the best team or one
- 48:02Speaker 1: of the best teams in the league. It's one of
- 48:04Speaker 1: those moments. So I think it's gonna be really fun.
- 48:07Speaker 2: And I think this is like, this is the part
- 48:09Speaker 2: of having a good team that should make you nervous,
- 48:12Speaker 2: but it's also kind of a cool thing where you're like, yeah, man,
- 48:15Speaker 2: they're coming for it every Vikings an Vikings are going
- 48:18Speaker 2: to show up and really try to take the Niners
- 48:20Speaker 2: out because the Niners, I mean, I saw what it
- 48:22Speaker 2: did for the Browns. They've had a whole week of like,
- 48:25Speaker 2: we beat the Niners, and you're like, so it meant
- 48:27Speaker 2: it means a lot for teams to beat the forty
- 48:29Speaker 2: nine ers right now. So I'm just hoping that doesn't.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Happen last thing we do. I know you're gonna hate it.
- 48:34Speaker 1: I need a score prediction.
- 48:36Speaker 2: I love you, and I want you to know that
- 48:38Speaker 2: before I say this, I love you.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Okay.
- 48:42Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be thirty one fourteen forty nine ers.
- 48:46Speaker 1: That's interesting. I also love you, and I did think
- 48:50Speaker 1: the Vikings defense would show up a little better than
- 48:52Speaker 1: you're thinking, because I thought it would be Niners fourteen,
- 48:55Speaker 1: Vikings one hundred and thirty eight. Dan, It's nice to
- 49:00Speaker 1: have you, buddy, I'm saying.
- 49:01Speaker 2: It will be close. It will be close till the
- 49:03Speaker 2: third quarter, and then the forty nine ers will find
- 49:04Speaker 2: a way to pull away. That's that's what I think totally.
- 49:07Speaker 1: I don't care about that at all. It's my show.
- 49:09Speaker 1: The show's over.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Thanks, Buddy, Sigh, you rule, dude. I'll talk to soon,
- 49:14Speaker 2: Letter Bud.
