- 0:00Good morning , market enthusiasts !
- 0:02I am your host , Sunny Side Sam , and you are listening to Spy Trader .
- 0:08It is 6 am on Saturday , March 14th , 2026 , out here on the Pacific coast , and while most of the world is still rubbing the sleep from their eyes , we are diving deep into the numbers to see how your portfolio can wake up on the right side of the bed .
- 0:24We have had a very interesting week ending March 13th , and if I had to describe it in two words , it would be restrained volatility .
- 0:33The broad market , which many of you track through the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust , or the SPY , wrapped up the week down about 1.2 percent .
- 0:43Our friends over in the tech sector had it a bit tougher , with the Invesco QQQ Trust sliding 2.1 percent .
- 0:51This coolingoff period comes after a really hot start to 2026 .
- 0:56The big story was the February CPI report released on March 10th .
- 1:01Inflation clocked in at 2.6 percent , which is just a smidge higher than the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent target .
- 1:09This has everyone realizing that the last mile of fighting inflation is the toughest .
- 1:14In company news , we saw some real movers .
- 1:18Apple announced Project Titan II , which is their big pivot into autonomous home robotics using Siri .
- 1:25That news actually helped the stock rise 2 percent , even while other tech giants were struggling .
- 1:31Eli Lilly also grabbed headlines as their nextgen metabolic drugs got the green light from the FDA for sleep apnea , helping the Healthcare sector stay resilient .
- 1:41On the flip side , things were a bit bumpy for the semiconductor stars like NVIDIA and Broadcom .
- 1:48Investors are starting to ask for the receipts , moving away from just buying hardware and looking for actual software results .
- 1:56Meanwhile , big banks like JPMorgan Chase are smiling because interest rates are staying higher for longer , which actually helped the Financials sector climb 0.7 percent this week .
- 2:08Now , let’s get into the nittygritty of why this is happening .
- 2:12We have entered what I like to call the ShowMe Phase .
- 2:16For the last couple of years , everyone was buying into the promise of AI .
- 2:20Now , in March 2026 , the market is saying , alright , show us the earnings .
- 2:26Because inflation is being a bit sticky , the Fed isn't in a hurry to cut rates , which pushed the 10year Treasury yield near 4.3 percent .
- 2:36This makes things hard for real estate , with the Vanguard Real Estate ETF , or VNQ , dropping 2.4 percent this week because it is hard to compete with those government bond yields .
- 2:48So , what is a Spy Trader to do ?
- 2:51First , for your core growth , do not panic about the tech dip .
- 2:55If you feel too heavy in chip stocks , consider rotating some of those gains into the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , known as XLK .
- 3:04It gives you a broader base including software giants like Microsoft .
- 3:09I also recommend maintaining a core position in the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , or VTI , to catch the recovery of midcap stocks once rates eventually settle .
- 3:20For those of you looking for stability , it is time to look at bonds again .
- 3:24With yields rising , the iShares Core U.S.
- 3:27Aggregate Bond ETF , or AGG , is looking very attractive for lockedin income .
- 3:34If you are feeling a bit more adventurous and think rates will drop later this year , the iShares 20 plus Year Treasury Bond ETF , or TLT , has some great upside potential , though you should expect some zigzags along the way .
- 3:49I also think a little insurance is a good idea .
- 3:52Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have pushed gold to new highs of 2,450 dollars an ounce .
- 4:00Allocating about 5 percent of your portfolio to SPDR Gold Shares , or GLD , can act as a great hedge .
- 4:08You might also look at the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , as a safe harbor .
- 4:15Companies like UnitedHealth Group are great because they offer stable dividends and do not care as much about the economic cycle .
- 4:23Finally , do not forget the rest of the world .
- 4:27U.S.
- 4:27stocks are getting a bit pricey , so take a look at the Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF , or VEA .
- 4:34Markets in Europe and Japan are trading at a big discount compared to the S&P 500 right now .
- 4:40To wrap it up : Hold your SPY , buy the dip in XLK software , accumulate some BND for those yields , and maybe avoid real estate like VNQ until the interest rate picture clears up .
- 4:53That is all for this morning's update .
- 4:56Stay frosty , stay friendly , and I will see you back here in a few hours .
- 5:01Happy trading !
