- 0:01There's a kind of exhaustion that comes from when you've
- 0:04actually succeeded. Many of us have hit milestones,
- 0:08checked boxes, and built exactly what we set out to build, only
- 0:13to find ourselves sitting in a space that feels surprisingly
- 0:18thin. It's at Nagging Disconnect where
- 0:21your life is pretty full but still feels unaligned in your
- 0:25soul. If you've ever felt that the
- 0:29fullness is still not complete or losing the flavor of your
- 0:32actual purpose, you're not alone.
- 0:36In fact, it's easy to get stuck in the comfort of Good Enough.
- 0:42I spent a lot of time thinking about why Good Enough is such a
- 0:47dangerous place for many of us to live.
- 0:51It's safe, It's protected, it's energy saving mode where we can
- 0:56keep the engine running without ever having to really challenge
- 1:00the design. We're capable people, we can
- 1:05make things work, but there can be a massive difference between
- 1:09what we built and what we're actually built for.
- 1:14Think about the way something is seasoned before it has any real
- 1:18depth, layers or character. It's just there.
- 1:24It's functional, but unrefined. It's missing the depth that only
- 1:29comes when it's met with intentionality that's
- 1:32specifically designed to change its nature.
- 1:36In the world of whiskey, distillation is the process of
- 1:40using heat to separate the essence from what doesn't
- 1:43belong. In our own lives, that same
- 1:47process helps us refine our raw effort into our true calling.
- 1:53It's not about doing more. It's about looking at that space
- 1:57in between, the moment we realize our good enough success
- 2:03isn't feeding our soul and the uncomfortable fire that actually
- 2:08makes that alignment possible. Most of us have figured out how
- 2:16to exist, how to show up, and how to make a life.
- 2:21We found a rhythm that works, a way to take our talent and our
- 2:25effort and turn it into a life that is, by most accounts,
- 2:30thriving. We meet the demands, we hit the
- 2:34marks. There's output.
- 2:38For leaders, this often looks like the title on the door, the
- 2:42weight of the responsibility you carry and the respect that's
- 2:46been earned over time. You're trusted, relied on, and
- 2:51the results around you are evidence of the years you've
- 2:54invested. For everyone else, it looks like
- 2:58a full, productive life. You built something you're proud
- 3:02of, you're providing. You can see the fruit of your
- 3:06labor, and none of that is accidental.
- 3:10But even inside a life that works, there can be an awareness
- 3:14for something that is missing just enough to notice, a sense
- 3:20that while everything functions, it doesn't quite resonate.
- 3:26That good enough has stopped feeling good.
- 3:30It's the realization that you've built a life that holds
- 3:33together, but you haven't yet stepped into the life that you
- 3:37were built for. In the distillation process,
- 3:42grain, water and yeast are heated until they rise as bad as
- 3:47vapor, then cooled and captured. What comes off the still is
- 3:52clear, honest, complete. In the industry is called white
- 3:59dog. You might know us as moonshine.
- 4:03It's the raw UN aged spirit fresh off the still.
- 4:06It's technically finished. It represents a successful
- 4:10completion of the distillation process, but the flavor is a
- 4:14little thin, and while it's technically whiskey, it isn't
- 4:20what the spirit was meant to become.
- 4:22It's success before significance.
- 4:27When you think of whiskey, you don't think of a clear liquid.
- 4:31You picture that amber glow, clear and warm.
- 4:35It's the color of the sunset caught in a glass.
- 4:39Sitting with a whiskey like that, you aren't just tasting
- 4:43the ingredients that were used to make it.
- 4:45Instead, you're tasting the earth, the oak, and the vanilla.
- 4:50It has depth. The difference between that
- 4:54clear moonshine and the finished world class whiskey isn't just a
- 4:59label, it's a transformation. All whiskey starts out the same
- 5:04way, thin and clear. But the difference between
- 5:09purpose and significance in a whiskey doesn't happen in the
- 5:12still. It happens in the barrel in the
- 5:18distillery. The still is a place of effort
- 5:21and production. It's where the raw ingredients
- 5:24are processed into a spirit that is technically finished.
- 5:28But the barrel is a place of surrender and time.
- 5:33It's where the spirit stops moving and starts maturing.
- 5:37It's where the clear, sharp liquid finally meets the element
- 5:41that will give it its color, its character, and it's very soul.
- 5:48This isn't the heat that creates a spirit.
- 5:51That work is already done in the still.
- 5:54This is the fire that prepares the container to hold what comes
- 5:58next. To get that rich amber color, or
- 6:02the vanilla, caramel and other flavors, the barrel in which the
- 6:06whiskey is stored has to be charred by fire, burnt inside.
- 6:13This charming process turns the inside of the barrel that is
- 6:16touching the whiskey black and caramelized.
- 6:20The results of this fire and the heat is what allows the whiskey
- 6:24to become what it's meant to be, rich, layered, and full of
- 6:30character. In the same way, the same fire
- 6:34that transforms the barrel is what transforms us.
- 6:39The fire represents those high heat moments in our lives, the
- 6:44pressures, the pivots, and the seasons.
- 6:47Where the heat feels like it might be too much for many of
- 6:51us, our instinct is to avoid the burn.
- 6:55We think that if we feel the heat, we must be doing something
- 6:58wrong. But here's the distinction.
- 7:03It's the fire that allows the seasons to actually change us.
- 7:09When that flame hits the oak barrel, it triggers a process
- 7:12called caramelization. The heat literally breaks down
- 7:16the bitter starches in the wood and turns them into sweet
- 7:20sugars. This is where the flavor comes
- 7:23from. The fire also creates a layer of
- 7:26charcoal that acts as a filter, pulling out the harshness and
- 7:31the sting of the raw spirit. The heat isn't there to destroy
- 7:37us. It's there to commerlize our
- 7:39character. It's the bridge that allows the
- 7:42seasons of our lives to finally turn our good enough success
- 7:47into an amber legacy. It's the bridge between what
- 7:52we've built and what we're actually built for.
- 7:58We can't control when the fire shows up in leadership.
- 8:02That fire might arrive as a strategic shift that unsettles
- 8:06your confidence. For others, it could look like a
- 8:09season of silence or the realization that the life you've
- 8:13been spending years building no longer fits the person you've
- 8:17become. Our instinct in these moments is
- 8:21to escape the burn, but significance is calling us to do
- 8:26something different. So there's a legendary story
- 8:31from 1910 at the Old Forester Distillery.
- 8:36They had a massive VAT of mature finished whiskey that was ready
- 8:40to be bottled. Success was sitting right there.
- 8:44But then a fire broke out on the bottling line.
- 8:48The manager was stuck with finished whiskey and nowhere for
- 8:52it to go. So he made a decision that
- 8:55defied the good enough logic of the time.
- 9:00He pumped that finished whiskey back into a second set of new,
- 9:04charred oak barrels. He essentially forced the
- 9:08whiskey to encounter the fire in the wood for a second time by
- 9:13pumping that finished liquid into brand new, heavily charred
- 9:17barrels. He wasn't just storing it.
- 9:20He restarted the transformation. The whiskey had already finished
- 9:25its first season, and it was successful, but the
- 9:29circumstances forced it back into a fresh container that had
- 9:33been prepared by a new fire. That season lasted far longer
- 9:38than anyone wanted, but when they finally fixed the line and
- 9:42tasted the liquid, they realized that the accident had created
- 9:47something that the original process never could.
- 9:52The whiskey was richer, darker, more complex.
- 9:58The whiskey wasn't just saved, it was double oaked.
- 10:04But here's the thing about a barrel.
- 10:06To do its job, it has to be permeable.
- 10:10If you put that white dog spirit into a barrel that has been
- 10:14lined with plastic or sealed with wax, you could let it sit
- 10:18for 50 years and it would never change.
- 10:22It would stay thin for the spirit to become amber.
- 10:27It has to be able to breathe into the wood.
- 10:30The wood has to open up. Many of us have spent years
- 10:36perfecting our seal. We've created a version of
- 10:39ourselves that's impermeable. We've built a container of
- 10:44having the answers and maintaining the image.
- 10:48We think the seal is what protects our success, but in
- 10:52reality, the seal is what prevents our significance.
- 10:58When you're impermeable, nothing gets in.
- 11:02Not new wisdom, not deep connection, and certainly not
- 11:07soul level alignment. You can sit in the barrel of a
- 11:12great career for decades, but if you've sealed yourself off from
- 11:16the heat, you'll come out exactly as thin as you went in.
- 11:22And this is where the metaphor shifts.
- 11:24Because whiskey doesn't have a choice.
- 11:27The barrel doesn't choose to be charred.
- 11:31But you and I, we do. We have the we have to be
- 11:36willing to allow the char to change us towards significance.
- 11:41The fire of your current season is trying to break that seal.
- 11:45It's trying to create pores in your character.
- 11:49It's trying to make you permeable so that the seasons of
- 11:52your life can finally get inside and do their work.
- 11:59And remember, the char isn't just about adding flavor.
- 12:03It's also about subtraction. In the barrel, that layer of
- 12:08carbon acts as a literal filter. It traps the chemical impurities
- 12:13that give the raw spirit its harsh and metallic sting.
- 12:18In our lives, the result of the fire is a work of subtraction.
- 12:24When we stay present in the heat, the char starts to trap
- 12:28the impurities of our doing. The ego, the need for
- 12:32validation, the obsession with efficiency.
- 12:36It leaves those things behind. In the wood, the sting is gone.
- 12:42The sharpness has been traded for depth.
- 12:46And that's a choice. Only a person who is willing to
- 12:48be charred can make you move from being a product of your
- 12:53effort to a manifestation of your significance.
- 12:59If your season is lasting longer than you planned, what if it's
- 13:03just a second charring? If you've ever gone to a whiskey
- 13:09tasting, you know you take notes on what you've tasted and what
- 13:12you want to remember. Here are my tasting notes from
- 13:17this conversation. First, success isn't the finish
- 13:21line, it's the raw material. The moonshine state is a win,
- 13:28but it's not the destination. It's just a moment.
- 13:31The spirit is finally ready for the transformation of the
- 13:35barrel. Second, the fire is an
- 13:39invitation, not a punishment. The fire is.
- 13:44The fire is what breaks down the bitterness of our doing, so the
- 13:48sweetness of our being can finally surface.
- 13:53And 3rd significance is found in the char.
- 13:57It's the charring that makes us permeable and allows the seasons
- 14:00of our lives to actually leave a mark.
- 14:04If we don't let the fire change us, the aging won't matter.
- 14:11Many of us are living in that clear, sharp state, successfully
- 14:15distilled, but still seeking significance and wondering why
- 14:19it feels so thin. The path from success to
- 14:23significance isn't found by distilling harder.
- 14:27It's found when we stop avoiding the fire and start leaning into
- 14:31the char. It's a moment we allow our
- 14:34character to be caramelized by the very pressures we've been
- 14:37trying to escape. If this episode resonated with
- 14:43you and you like to sit with these ideas a bit longer, I
- 14:47prepared a set of tasting notes and reflections for this
- 14:50conversation. These are to help you examine
- 14:53your own successes and navigate thefireofyourcurrentseasonyoucanfindthose@craftedclarity.net/tasting
