- 1:00Speaker 3: Christo itself. Email us hello at Girls Gone Hallmark dot com. Megan,
- 1:06Speaker 3: I just have a thought, Yeah, if we ever move
- 1:10Speaker 3: away from Hallmark or add way more additional content outside
- 1:15Speaker 3: of Hallmark, would we change the opening to Just like,
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm Wendy and I'm a former hater In general, which
- 1:25Speaker 3: is kind of true.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That's actually true, though.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Don't you think you're the.
- 1:30Speaker 1: More like optimistic, sunny disposition of the two of us?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:35Speaker 3: I do, but but also because you're the realist, right,
- 1:41Speaker 3: But I mean I generally do like not like things.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Do we need to change our intro? No?
- 1:53Speaker 3: No, I mean I think it's who we are, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 3: I mean just looking down the road if there is ever,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you know, a pivot in our future where there's been
- 2:03Speaker 3: many pivots in the past. So you know, I'm just
- 2:08Speaker 3: I don't know, I hate I hate this persona like
- 2:12Speaker 3: I come off as a hater because we have talked
- 2:16Speaker 3: about how I hate Christmas and I hate kids, which
- 2:19Speaker 3: is not true, but like I do kind of have
- 2:21Speaker 3: like this reservation to most things.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's our podcast and we can do
- 2:26Speaker 1: whatever we want.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Right, This is right, This is right, And I gotta
- 2:30Speaker 3: tell you, I mean I did think I was going
- 2:32Speaker 3: to go into the Count of Monte Cristo with a
- 2:34Speaker 3: real like, not so great attitude. This show has me
- 2:38Speaker 3: in a choke hold, I know.
- 2:42Speaker 1: With all that said, if you are enjoying these reviews
- 2:45Speaker 1: for us, for Megan and Wendy, head on over to
- 2:47Speaker 1: our Patreon Patreon dot com slash Megan and Wendy, where
- 2:50Speaker 1: we publish four bonus episodes every month for the bargain
- 2:54Speaker 1: price of just five dollars a month. Can't even get
- 2:57Speaker 1: a full gallon of gas in the state of California
- 2:59Speaker 1: for that price. They are pop culture. They are product reviews,
- 3:05Speaker 1: nothing sponsored. They are talking about life and parenting, teenagers
- 3:09Speaker 1: and young adults and midlife and all of it. It's
- 3:14Speaker 1: a good time over there. Your first week is completely
- 3:16Speaker 1: free if you'd like to check it out.
- 3:19Speaker 3: And if I can add, if you like this episode,
- 3:23Speaker 3: I encourage you to share it with someone in your life,
- 3:27Speaker 3: because you know, we're just sitting there at the kitchen
- 3:29Speaker 3: table trying to do the damn thing, and so your
- 3:31Speaker 3: support is very appreciated.
- 3:34Speaker 2: That's right.
- 3:35Speaker 1: A couple quick notes about this episode. Joining the cast,
- 3:39Speaker 1: we have Michelle Riandino.
- 3:42Speaker 2: He plays Jacopo.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Michelle is an Italian actor and director with forty six
- 3:46Speaker 1: acting credits, mostly foreign projects, including an Italian Netflix series
- 3:51Speaker 1: called Fidelity.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Here's what a dummy I am. I'm like, oh, they
- 3:55Speaker 3: have Netflix in other countries, guys. I would consider myself smart,
- 4:04Speaker 3: but sometimes I'm a real freaking bonehead.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I mean, haven't you ever been served a Netflix show
- 4:10Speaker 1: and you open it.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Up and yes, I have?
- 4:13Speaker 1: You're right, it's like completely in German.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yes I have. God, I'm such a dummy. I'm such
- 4:20Speaker 2: a dummy. You're not.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I should be stuck in our own little world. Sometimes
- 4:26Speaker 1: that is true, that is true. We also have the
- 4:28Speaker 1: actor of Nicholas Farrel playing Morale. He was in episode
- 4:31Speaker 1: one as well. He has one hundred and sixty five
- 4:34Speaker 1: acting credits and he has appeared in projects like Hamlet
- 4:37Speaker 1: and The Iron Lady. Why don't we take a quick
- 4:41Speaker 1: little break and come right back with our first impressions
- 4:43Speaker 1: of this episode? Hey, Wendy, what was your first impression
- 4:55Speaker 1: of episode three of The Count of Monte Cristo New Money?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Who dis.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but I'm actually really here
- 5:06Speaker 3: for it. I'm so into the revenge part of it,
- 5:10Speaker 3: Like it feels so juicy to me.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I yeah, love it. This episode was really fun.
- 5:16Speaker 1: My first episode is Edmondante's has been out of prison
- 5:19Speaker 1: for what feels like forty five minutes and he has
- 5:21Speaker 1: stolen closed, found treasure, assumed a fake identity, hired us
- 5:24Speaker 1: by and saved a man's life while I'm over here struggling.
- 5:28Speaker 2: To respond to a text message.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Okay, did we not talk about this in the last episode.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yes, he came out of prison with a plan. That
- 5:39Speaker 2: escaped with a plan.
- 5:40Speaker 1: How I towing in?
- 5:41Speaker 3: So he was thinking about he did feel refreshed on
- 5:45Speaker 3: his prison vacation.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He was ready to go. It was making that mental
- 5:49Speaker 1: to do list on.
- 5:50Speaker 2: His flhe yep, yep, yeah, totally.
- 5:54Speaker 3: He was on his laptop going on, I wish I
- 5:56Speaker 3: could get away from these people so I can.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Go in and we'd ruin some lives.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It's time to be productive after fifteen years in a
- 6:05Speaker 1: dungeon scraping.
- 6:07Speaker 2: My way through a cement walll.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Stone, I guess, because I don't know if cement even
- 6:13Speaker 3: like No, it was Stone, Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Definitely wasn't like a cement machine pulling up to the island.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Are you picturing when I'm picturing the rolling?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yes? I am, Yes, I am. What did you like
- 6:28Speaker 2: about this episode?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Like I said in the opening, I love that we
- 6:33Speaker 3: get like the revenge turns on, like we are in it,
- 6:38Speaker 3: like we are we're doing this now.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I loved it. I loved it so much. I love that.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's I mean, obviously we don't know the plan other
- 6:49Speaker 3: than like he's out to get some people. But it
- 6:53Speaker 3: was kind of interesting because, like he gets back, he
- 6:56Speaker 3: realizes his father's dead, He realizes or is told that
- 7:00Speaker 3: Mercedes is off in Paris married to someone else, Like
- 7:04Speaker 3: his entire life is gone.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I don't know what he expected. Did he expect to
- 7:09Speaker 2: come back and.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Find Mercedes like burning the midnight oil for him? That's
- 7:14Speaker 3: not the right term, but.
- 7:15Speaker 1: You know, yeah, she kept a light on for him, right,
- 7:19Speaker 1: That's that's what I was looking for.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yes, like he was.
- 7:22Speaker 3: She was waiting for him all these years, Like, I mean,
- 7:25Speaker 3: come on, like, well, but I guess he didn't realize
- 7:28Speaker 3: that they thought he was dead. So you know, just
- 7:32Speaker 3: a lot of like realization that happens for him all
- 7:34Speaker 3: at once.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yes, for him, of course.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But it's it's such a great question because they show
- 7:41Speaker 1: him yearning and having memories of her throughout his time
- 7:44Speaker 1: in prison, and and he he remembers her as she was,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and for him, he doesn't know what has changed, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: nothing has changed for him all he's he's been in prison,
- 7:56Speaker 1: so he can't imagine a world in which she's not
- 8:00Speaker 1: still in it apparently, and again, this is not twenty
- 8:03Speaker 1: twenty six prison, where you know there's electronic communication or
- 8:07Speaker 1: even the postal system, so it doesn't have any of
- 8:11Speaker 1: this information, right right.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I also say, like with the revenge stuff.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I I do find it morally questionable on my part
- 8:27Speaker 4: that I find it so entertaining, But I also think
- 8:30Speaker 4: there's like.
- 8:31Speaker 3: A little seed inside of me that operates from a
- 8:35Speaker 3: place of revenge, which I don't feel great about admitting.
- 8:39Speaker 3: But I'm human and flawed, so I think I find
- 8:45Speaker 3: it very entertaining to see him move forward with all this,
- 8:51Speaker 3: all these plans.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's absolutely entertaining.
- 8:54Speaker 1: But also I think for me there's a part of
- 8:57Speaker 1: it that feels like, no, that is due to them.
- 9:01Speaker 1: They behaved badly, they should be punished. Now I have
- 9:04Speaker 1: absolutely no idea the ways in which he is going
- 9:07Speaker 1: to punish these people, and that I really can't wait
- 9:09Speaker 1: to see what.
- 9:09Speaker 2: It's going to be.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Because at the end of the episode, Yakapo's like, why
- 9:13Speaker 1: don't I just kill him?
- 9:14Speaker 2: And He's like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 9:16Speaker 1: They need to pay in the ways in which I suffered.
- 9:20Speaker 1: That's worse, I know, I know, but I'm like man.
- 9:26Speaker 1: There is a little part of me that's like, he's
- 9:29Speaker 1: kind of Dexter's the wrong analogy, but like doing bad
- 9:33Speaker 1: for the sake of good, yes, punishing bad people.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm kind of okay with it now.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I may change my tune when I see what he's
- 9:42Speaker 1: got planned. You got that seed in you two, don't
- 9:47Speaker 1: tell me otherwise. I just want to see the bad
- 9:49Speaker 1: people suffer me too. But here's what I what I
- 9:54Speaker 1: love is the people that are on his side. I
- 9:59Speaker 1: think what is leaning me towards, like I'm team Dantes
- 10:03Speaker 1: here team count is he's good to the people who
- 10:07Speaker 1: are good to him. He saves Yakapoe's life and you're
- 10:12Speaker 1: not really sure where that's going, and you can see
- 10:13Speaker 1: them sailing away, and he's real torn. He's like, I
- 10:15Speaker 1: got to get to this island, but the man's got
- 10:19Speaker 1: a gun, so I have to take him home. He
- 10:20Speaker 1: steals the boat, but then he makes good on that,
- 10:23Speaker 1: like he more then makes up for the fact that
- 10:27Speaker 1: he steals their little boat, right, like, sends them all
- 10:30Speaker 1: money and to buy the boat, and money for a home,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and money just money to travel with. And then when
- 10:37Speaker 1: he's first escaped, he breaks into that farmhouse and he
- 10:40Speaker 1: steals some clothes and a pair of scissors, it seems like,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and he sends Yakapo back with a giant pile of
- 10:47Speaker 1: money to make.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Up for that.
- 10:49Speaker 1: He's more than compensating these people for what he may
- 10:55Speaker 1: have taken from them. Right, So I'm like, I like him,
- 10:58Speaker 1: Like he's putting good into the world world. I know
- 11:00Speaker 1: he's going to do bad right now. I'm like, he's trying.
- 11:05Speaker 3: To be an example. Okay, So I have so many questions.
- 11:09Speaker 3: This is so interesting. I think Edmund is a product
- 11:13Speaker 3: of circumstance. Right, we meet him.
- 11:16Speaker 2: He's like this.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I think he's like supposed to be nineteen. He's very young,
- 11:20Speaker 3: right yeah, And he's a good guy, and so we're
- 11:23Speaker 3: rooting for him because we know he's a good, innocent man.
- 11:27Speaker 3: He only turns bad because of the way he's wronged, right, yes,
- 11:32Speaker 3: And so we're grappling with like we know, at his
- 11:37Speaker 3: core he's a good man and he's only in acting
- 11:41Speaker 3: revenge on people because of what has been done to him.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So it's all justified.
- 11:46Speaker 3: But is there a bigger conversation here about people being born?
- 11:53Speaker 2: Kind of?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Are we born innocent? Are we born evil, Like, is
- 11:57Speaker 3: there something bad in everybody, but we are taught to
- 12:00Speaker 3: be morally good?
- 12:02Speaker 2: Do you see what I'm throwing down here? Or is
- 12:03Speaker 2: this ide?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Doog?
- 12:05Speaker 5: No?
- 12:05Speaker 1: I do see what you're throwing down. I think it's
- 12:08Speaker 1: a hard question to answer, because up until circumstances were
- 12:12Speaker 1: what they were, we had no reason to believe Edmund
- 12:15Speaker 1: was anything but a net good in the world.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:19Speaker 1: He was good to his father, he was loving to Mercedes,
- 12:22Speaker 1: he was a hard worker. He had all of these
- 12:24Speaker 1: things going for him. And even when he is first
- 12:28Speaker 1: arrested and taken in and questioned by Villefort, he's answering
- 12:32Speaker 1: very honestly. It's clear that he's a good person and
- 12:35Speaker 1: he just doesn't understand what's happening to him. So it's
- 12:38Speaker 1: impossible to separate what has happened to him and wonder
- 12:43Speaker 1: who he would.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Have been otherwise. Correct, I find it super compelling. I
- 12:49Speaker 2: do too.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah, So I guess to your point, like he had
- 12:53Speaker 1: that goodness in him, and perhaps he can't help but
- 12:57Speaker 1: act on that in the circumstances in which it's warranted. Right,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I don't know, Like, I love seeing the good side
- 13:05Speaker 1: of it. And even when he goes to Cadarousse at
- 13:09Speaker 1: the inn. Yes, it's one of my favorite scenes. First
- 13:12Speaker 1: of all, it's the only funny scene, like when when
- 13:15Speaker 1: he gives Caterous the money and his voice cracks like
- 13:18Speaker 1: he's shocked by it.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Real funny.
- 13:20Speaker 1: That was one of those scenes where he kind of
- 13:22Speaker 1: had Cadarousse by the balls, so to speak, like when
- 13:25Speaker 1: he Carous is like, I didn't I didn't do this,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah, but you knew about it.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And didn't do anything about it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And yeah, Cadarousse again behaved in his own self interest
- 13:35Speaker 1: because he was afraid what would happen to him if
- 13:38Speaker 1: he had tried to stop them, or if he had
- 13:39Speaker 1: gone to the authorities, or if he had told people.
- 13:41Speaker 2: What was going on.
- 13:43Speaker 1: And so Catters doesn't really have a choice, Like he's
- 13:45Speaker 1: standing there with a gun to his head for all
- 13:47Speaker 1: intents and purposes. He does not have to go above
- 13:51Speaker 1: and beyond and give him all of that money to
- 13:53Speaker 1: get him to do his bidding. Yeah, well, and now
- 13:58Speaker 1: it makes me wonder like it goes back to again
- 14:00Speaker 1: to moral character when we talk about Cadarousse, because, like
- 14:03Speaker 1: you said, Caterousse didn't want to put himself out on
- 14:06Speaker 1: the line because he was worried what would happen to him.
- 14:10Speaker 1: So in that moment he decides, well, okay, I'm gonna
- 14:13Speaker 1: Unfortunately that sucks what happened to Edmund, but I'm good,
- 14:18Speaker 1: right who throws the letter in the fire? Catarousse did,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and then Morel goes and gets it out.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Yeah, because it wasn't act not Morel danglars Yeah, uh yeah,
- 14:29Speaker 3: yeah yeah. So I mean Cadarousse did does try to
- 14:33Speaker 3: stop what's in motion, but he he knew what happened.
- 14:39Speaker 3: He knows what happens to Edmund, and like he could
- 14:42Speaker 3: have told somebody, but he did not correct. So it
- 14:47Speaker 3: I mean, it just goes back to these are deeper
- 14:50Speaker 3: questions that I think about, like would I say something
- 14:53Speaker 3: to potentially put myself, you know, in the line of
- 14:57Speaker 3: fire to save somebody else or to stand up for
- 15:00Speaker 3: somebody else like I would hope I would, But would
- 15:03Speaker 3: I if I feared, you know, retribution, and it's my
- 15:07Speaker 3: own life.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm not sure that I would have either.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I mean, this is kind of a lawless place a
- 15:13Speaker 1: little bit in the sense that you can't even trust
- 15:16Speaker 1: the people who are in charge of upholding the law
- 15:19Speaker 1: right and so to me, would I have gone farther
- 15:22Speaker 1: than Caderous did? Like you said, I don't know that
- 15:24Speaker 1: I would have either.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I mean, he stood.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Up to these men and then when they go above him,
- 15:31Speaker 1: that's where it ends. But yeah, clearly did fear for
- 15:34Speaker 1: his own.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Life, right.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I have a lot of other likes that we saw.
- 15:39Speaker 3: We might have to just like rewind. Yeah, for sure,
- 15:42Speaker 3: things we've already talked about. But Edmund's confession to the priest.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I thought this was really interesting because he frames it
- 15:50Speaker 3: as justice and not revenge. So I feel like there
- 15:55Speaker 3: is a line that he's clinging onto that he sees
- 15:58Speaker 3: himself as a good man, like he's not he's not
- 16:01Speaker 3: a bad dude, Like that's.
- 16:03Speaker 2: How he sees himself. I thought it was.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Really interesting when he goes on to say because the
- 16:09Speaker 3: priest tells him, like, you know, God is the ultimate judge, right, essentially,
- 16:15Speaker 3: I don't remember the exact line. Edmund responds, he said,
- 16:18Speaker 3: if God won't do it, I will, And I was like, yikes,
- 16:22Speaker 3: like what are we getting ourselves into? Like is he
- 16:26Speaker 3: going to kill these people? And you said earlier that
- 16:30Speaker 3: he he had mentioned like they need, like his revenge
- 16:33Speaker 3: needs to be like as equally as bad and maybe
- 16:36Speaker 3: death is the easy way out. So I don't know
- 16:38Speaker 3: what he's going to do exactly, just makes me excited
- 16:42Speaker 3: to watch. Also, to me, what I thought was interesting
- 16:45Speaker 3: if I think of Edmund from episode one even episode.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Two, like we've gone through this whole.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Identity shift with him, right, good guy in episode one,
- 16:55Speaker 3: hopeless but hopeful in episode two, and now we are
- 16:58Speaker 3: really moving into like a completely different character of Edmund.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yeah this is the baddie and yeah, yeah, he has
- 17:08Speaker 3: gone from good guy too like scary guy to me.
- 17:11Speaker 3: But I'm holding on too, like this nugget of like
- 17:15Speaker 3: he like you said, like he's doing bad for good.
- 17:18Speaker 3: So that's what I'm holding on too.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I think there's part of me that wants to believe
- 17:22Speaker 1: that because I don't see myself as a person who's
- 17:24Speaker 1: typically like into the bad boy of it all, but
- 17:27Speaker 1: he certainly is. Oh just wait, he's certainly leaning bad boy.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And when he's like call me the Count of Monte Cristo.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, I've.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I love the introduction of Jacopo, But also.
- 17:47Speaker 3: I'm questioning Edmund's decision here because the dude he just
- 17:53Speaker 3: met this guy, right, Like.
- 17:54Speaker 2: He is a criminal.
- 17:56Speaker 3: He is a criminal, Like, why are you trusting this guy?
- 17:58Speaker 3: Like I'm like, my heck up, I'm like.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Ah, don't try.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Just because you've been wrongly accused, you shouldn't assume that
- 18:07Speaker 3: other criminals are also wrongly accused. Yeah, yeah, And he's
- 18:13Speaker 3: putting too much trust in this guy.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Well, I think he's putting too much trust in everybody.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Like he puts a lot of trust in Cadarousse to
- 18:19Speaker 1: carry out his plans.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Uh huh.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And once Cadarousse is gone, Look again, this is the
- 18:26Speaker 1: nineteenth century we're dealing with.
- 18:28Speaker 2: He doesn't have quick access to him.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Like, if Cadarousse decides to take that money and run,
- 18:33Speaker 1: he may never see him again. Right, which, by the way,
- 18:36Speaker 1: I looked up five hundred francs equivalent to twenty twenty
- 18:40Speaker 1: six money. It's like, yeah, eighty five to one hundred
- 18:43Speaker 1: thousand American dollars. Oh wow, he gave him a chunk
- 18:46Speaker 1: of change. Wow, yeah wow.
- 18:51Speaker 2: But back to Yakapo.
- 18:53Speaker 3: The Yakapo character for me feels a little unhinged, Like
- 18:58Speaker 3: I'm worried, right, I'm worried that he's not trustworthy, except
- 19:04Speaker 3: when we get that scene at the end when he
- 19:06Speaker 3: makes amends to the people he stole from, when he
- 19:08Speaker 3: gives them back money.
- 19:10Speaker 2: I was like, okay, okay, okay, he's a good.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Guy because he could have just taken that money for himself,
- 19:15Speaker 1: like he had no reason to take it back to
- 19:17Speaker 1: that farmhouse that or he didn't have to go and
- 19:20Speaker 1: apologize for what he had done. Yeah, but I mean
- 19:24Speaker 1: you're talking about Yakapo's a good guy or Edmund is
- 19:26Speaker 1: a good guy. Yakamo. Yakapo's not the guy who stole
- 19:30Speaker 1: from them.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Yes he is.
- 19:32Speaker 1: No, he's not he Edmund stole from them. That's the
- 19:35Speaker 1: farmhouse that Edmund went to immediately after escaping and stole
- 19:40Speaker 1: clothes from them. Oh, and then he Yakapo is the
- 19:45Speaker 1: messenger there.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Okay, well this explains a lot then and you will
- 19:51Speaker 3: hear it in my wishes.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Okay, that explains a lot.
- 19:54Speaker 3: I thought Yakapo had stolen from that family and he
- 19:58Speaker 3: was making amends, and then the I was like, oh,
- 20:01Speaker 3: he is a good guy. He has a good heart,
- 20:04Speaker 3: he's not a terrible criminal. And then that makes him trustworthy.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, do you see?
- 20:10Speaker 3: Uh?
- 20:11Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying, see, And that scene was
- 20:13Speaker 1: one of the ones that led me to believe that
- 20:17Speaker 1: Dantees is a net good because he is trying to
- 20:22Speaker 1: operate in the world. He's only trying to bring harm
- 20:26Speaker 1: among people who have harmed him, right, and trying to
- 20:28Speaker 1: make up for the harms that he got it.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well now I'm back on like e
- 20:34Speaker 3: I don't know if we should trust Yakapo.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Well, I hear you, and I don't know if we
- 20:38Speaker 1: should trust Yakapo either. But the way Yakapo starts to
- 20:41Speaker 1: behave once he's in Edmund's service, he certainly behaves in
- 20:46Speaker 1: a way that I do trust him.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Like his behavior, I'm leaning towards trusting him.
- 20:52Speaker 1: He's not he seems to be on Edmund's side, And
- 20:56Speaker 1: there's part of me that really likes this like team
- 20:59Speaker 1: building up it all like he's going to bring all
- 21:01Speaker 1: of these people over and this is going to be
- 21:03Speaker 1: like he has these friends.
- 21:05Speaker 2: The way I.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Felt so good when he met Abby, who also potentially
- 21:09Speaker 1: had done some wrong to land himself in prison, I
- 21:13Speaker 1: don't know.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I just am like, oh, let's let's.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Build this team of Avengers.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I gotta tell you that I just googled does yakapo
- 21:20Speaker 3: ever double cross?
- 21:21Speaker 2: No, don't tell me the answer. I won't tell you that.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I won't tell you the answer.
- 21:25Speaker 3: But I can't I have to spoil it for myself
- 21:29Speaker 3: because I'm like, I can't.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Don't worry, I googled before after episode one, do Mercedes
- 21:37Speaker 1: and Edmund end up together?
- 21:38Speaker 3: So?
- 21:39Speaker 2: Oh, don't tell me that either, I won't. So can
- 21:43Speaker 2: I tell you.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Some some moments that I liked in this episode?
- 21:46Speaker 2: Sure?
- 21:47Speaker 1: I like the first time he sees himself in a mirror,
- 21:50Speaker 1: likely the first time and obviously the first time in
- 21:52Speaker 1: fifteen years. It's the silent moment shocking. I liked that
- 21:57Speaker 1: kind of reminds us of what we're dealing with you. Similarly,
- 22:01Speaker 1: when he discovers his own grave, like this wave of
- 22:06Speaker 1: crashing realizations he has so at the beginning of this episode,
- 22:10Speaker 1: seeing himself learning that his father has passed, learning that
- 22:14Speaker 1: he was presumed dead, and not just dead, but dead
- 22:17Speaker 1: by his own hand, and then learning that Mercedes is married.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I have a question for you.
- 22:23Speaker 1: He seems shocked by who Mercedes is married to, baffled
- 22:28Speaker 1: even I thought it seemed so obvious that Fernand was
- 22:32Speaker 1: like so into Mercedes and so jealous of Edmund.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Maybe Edmund didn't realize it in that first episode.
- 22:40Speaker 2: He must not have. Yeah, I don't know. But Fernand
- 22:44Speaker 2: the way for Nan.
- 22:45Speaker 1: He's like, ough, hi, Edmund, right, you can go across,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and he dances with Mercedes.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I don't know. I was shocked by his shock.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Maybe he was shocked because he was like, what Mercedes.
- 23:00Speaker 2: He's never showed any interest in that dude.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Perhaps perhaps that's a good one.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Finally, a scene that I loved but was hard to
- 23:10Speaker 1: watch when we see Morel cocking the gun. Yeah, likely
- 23:14Speaker 1: to take his own life, just as Yakapo delivers the
- 23:17Speaker 1: purse to his daughter.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Paying off all of his debts.
- 23:22Speaker 1: And again this is another argument in the Edmund is
- 23:25Speaker 1: a good guy call him like he Morel was good
- 23:28Speaker 1: to him and the money that Morel gave him for
- 23:32Speaker 1: a wedding gift was the money that his father lived
- 23:35Speaker 1: on for years. And then Dantes saves him secretly. I
- 23:41Speaker 1: mean that the scene when the daughter walks in, I
- 23:43Speaker 1: was so afraid of what was going to happen. I
- 23:47Speaker 1: thought that was great at the time about all the shooting.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Of that great scene. I have two more likes. My
- 23:55Speaker 3: first one is when they're in Marseille again Marseille.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yes right, yes, Wendy, I just take the question mark
- 24:04Speaker 2: off the end of it. I can't anyway.
- 24:06Speaker 3: It feels so risky because Edmund's walking around his old life, like, look,
- 24:12Speaker 3: I know he's been gone for a long time. And
- 24:14Speaker 3: then yes, people also think he's dead. But are you
- 24:18Speaker 3: just a little bit afraid that you're going to be
- 24:20Speaker 3: recognized just a little bit, yes, Like the man is
- 24:23Speaker 3: in restaurants, I know, going about his business.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'm like, I passed his father's old home.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like, this is so risky. The other thing
- 24:35Speaker 3: that I really liked man the cinematography and this show
- 24:40Speaker 3: is so good. When Edmund's looking for the treasure and
- 24:44Speaker 3: he finally finds it and he's standing on like this
- 24:48Speaker 3: sweeping cliff side these beautiful shots, it is giving like
- 24:52Speaker 3: I'm the king of.
- 24:53Speaker 2: The world, you know a little bit. But I loved it.
- 24:56Speaker 2: It was beautiful.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Also, we're not doing digit see that, which is a
- 25:00Speaker 3: segment that we usually do in our Hallmark movies, but
- 25:02Speaker 3: there is one I have to point out when he
- 25:05Speaker 3: finds the treasure was it not giving Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 25:10Speaker 2: One thousand percent. Yes, like the ride at Disneyland one.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Thousand percent and the movie quite frankly, I was like
- 25:18Speaker 1: the Sun Shining Man, Yeah totally, and he like lifts
- 25:22Speaker 1: it up and there's just piles of gold. Yes, yes, yeah,
- 25:25Speaker 1: Well let's talk wishes.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Well here is my whole buffoonery question of it all.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I was, I'm like, how did Edmund get new clothes
- 25:37Speaker 3: and get cleaned up so quickly? Well, apparently he sold
- 25:40Speaker 3: it from that farm. Yeah, he didn't remember.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Did they just like did they brush over that?
- 25:45Speaker 1: Or he goes into the farm, takes clothes, looks out
- 25:49Speaker 1: the windows, like whose house did you think he was in?
- 25:52Speaker 2: I had no idea.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Yeah, no idea. Are you like looking out at them
- 25:56Speaker 1: working in the farm?
- 25:57Speaker 3: Oh see, I totally I totally missed it. I watched
- 26:01Speaker 3: this episode twice too.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I mean, it's not clear where he is, but he's
- 26:05Speaker 1: got to be stealing them from someone. I don't know,
- 26:07Speaker 1: he doesn't have a home.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I need that like montage scene, you know where he's
- 26:12Speaker 2: like you need a voiceover?
- 26:15Speaker 1: Oh, I mean you needed like a shower in a shave, Yeah,
- 26:19Speaker 1: and get ready to hey cutting his hair, Like, did
- 26:22Speaker 1: did they show him cutting his hair? No, they just
- 26:24Speaker 1: show him taking the scissors from the house. Oh okay,
- 26:27Speaker 1: all right.
- 26:28Speaker 3: And then my other only wish is and I touched
- 26:30Speaker 3: on it briefly, is that he is being too trusting
- 26:33Speaker 3: of people too quickly.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:35Speaker 1: I agree, he's telling too many people what he's.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Doing for sure.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I'm technically telling him what he's.
- 26:41Speaker 2: He's definitely controlling a soon.
- 26:43Speaker 1: To me, it feels like he's assuming that the money
- 26:45Speaker 1: will be enough of a control.
- 26:47Speaker 3: And perhaps it is mmmm interesting where he's gonna be
- 26:53Speaker 3: seen as like a man with power because he has
- 26:56Speaker 3: all this wealth, and then therefore people will fall in
- 26:59Speaker 3: line with him.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Perhaps power is powerful.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Well, speaking of buffoonery, Look, he calls himself Sinbad, right,
- 27:07Speaker 1: he tells Yakawa. He's like, my name is Sinbad. Sinbad
- 27:10Speaker 1: is a from the legend of the Arabian Knights who
- 27:14Speaker 1: had a lot of treasure.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:15Speaker 1: But I'm like, man, this is a I don't know
- 27:19Speaker 1: that he could read. He certainly wasn't educated, right, Like
- 27:22Speaker 1: Abby does a lot of educating of him in prison.
- 27:27Speaker 1: And I was like, is this like an oral tradition?
- 27:29Speaker 1: That he was told, like did they tell kids the
- 27:31Speaker 1: story of Sinbad the Sailor? Like I this is my
- 27:35Speaker 1: twenty twenty six brain. Can't wrap my head around the
- 27:38Speaker 1: way in which stories were passed down, Like how did
- 27:41Speaker 1: he certainly didn't have like the Book of the Arabian
- 27:44Speaker 1: Nights sitting on his nights, you know what I mean.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I'm just trying to understand how he came to have
- 27:49Speaker 1: that knowledge. The other thing is you talked about the treasure?
- 27:54Speaker 2: Where's he keeping it all? Good question?
- 27:58Speaker 1: When I saw him come upon all that treasure, I
- 28:01Speaker 1: was like, first of all, how's it going to get
- 28:03Speaker 1: it off that island? He's going to haul it all
- 28:04Speaker 1: down to his tiny little sailboat. Second of all, I
- 28:08Speaker 1: hope the novel has more to say because or maybe
- 28:11Speaker 1: people are like, it doesn't matter. Stop getting caught up
- 28:16Speaker 1: in things that do not matter.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Megan, Yeah, these are questions I stick with me though, too.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Sure I think you are valid in bringing them up.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I have some discussion questions. Are you ready, please?
- 28:32Speaker 2: If someone had.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Wronged you ten plus years ago, do you even remember
- 28:38Speaker 3: enough details to execute this level of revenge?
- 28:41Speaker 5: Uh?
- 28:43Speaker 3: Probably this sort of significant wronging, right?
- 28:49Speaker 1: I mean, they stole fifteen years of his life from him.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he done.
- 28:53Speaker 1: He was not forge to eat maggots. The love of
- 28:56Speaker 1: his life moved on, his father died. Yeah, he was
- 28:59Speaker 1: falsely in prison. I mean, look, I remember girls that
- 29:02Speaker 1: are mean to me in high school. So yeah, I'm
- 29:06Speaker 1: just gonna be like, do you remember that person that
- 29:07Speaker 1: cut you off on the four or five freeway?
- 29:09Speaker 3: Probably not, but yeah, girls who wronged you in high school?
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah? But are you executing this level of revenge on them?
- 29:16Speaker 3: Oh?
- 29:16Speaker 1: I'm just thinking if I if I see them on Facebook,
- 29:19Speaker 1: I'm rolling my eyes and thinking she was not nice.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Except that's not the wording I'm using. Got it, got it?
- 29:26Speaker 3: If you found a treasure, any treasure, but it's certainly
- 29:30Speaker 3: a treasure this big that he's found. Are you becoming
- 29:34Speaker 3: a better person or are you also launching a full revenge?
- 29:38Speaker 1: You know, I don't have the kind of events in
- 29:41Speaker 1: my life that would lead me to want to exact
- 29:43Speaker 1: revenge on people. I would like to think I would
- 29:46Speaker 1: become a better person, a better person who who lives
- 29:50Speaker 1: a slightly grander life, like I would want to do
- 29:52Speaker 1: good with it, and I would quite frankly, let's be honest,
- 29:54Speaker 1: anybody who's like I'd give it all the way you're lying,
- 29:56Speaker 1: You'd enjoy some of it. You would upburst, you would
- 29:59Speaker 1: upgrade your quality of life while also doing good with it.
- 30:03Speaker 2: I think so too. I think so too.
- 30:05Speaker 3: But now I'm really stuck in the muck about like
- 30:08Speaker 3: him pulling this big treasure chress behind him through the
- 30:11Speaker 3: streets of Marseilles so he can uh.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I needed to see him climbing down those rocks with
- 30:15Speaker 1: all that treasure.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I have taken days. Why did he do that? I
- 30:18Speaker 2: know exactly exactly.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Okay, my final question is if you're in the mindset
- 30:25Speaker 3: of Edmund, do you do you think he actually believes
- 30:31Speaker 3: this is about justice? Or is that what he's telling
- 30:33Speaker 3: himself so he can live with his decisions.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Well, I don't think he thinks like I'm Batman and
- 30:41Speaker 1: I'm bringing these people to justice. I think he thinks
- 30:46Speaker 1: they hurt me and I am going to hurt them.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I think justice. I mean, does he use He.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Might use that word, but I think his point is
- 30:55Speaker 1: they deserve to suffer, and not they deserve to suffer
- 30:58Speaker 1: in the eyes of the law, but they deserve to
- 31:00Speaker 1: suffer in a way that I feel measures up to
- 31:02Speaker 1: the way that they forced me to suffer.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you think that's like a human instinct?
- 31:08Speaker 3: I don't, do you Well, I already admitted that I
- 31:11Speaker 3: have like a small seed of revenge that lives inside
- 31:13Speaker 3: of me. But I don't see if myself ever like
- 31:17Speaker 3: plotting a full scale, no tortuous revenge plot on people
- 31:22Speaker 3: who wronged me. So I think maybe it could be.
- 31:28Speaker 1: When I think about something like this happening, like if
- 31:30Speaker 1: I were Edmund, to me, the greater good would be like, oh, look,
- 31:35Speaker 1: I think I'm less interested in the revenge piece of it,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and oh and like, oh I have treasure, and now
- 31:40Speaker 1: my life's going to be amazing.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yes, but amazing with people who.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Don't exist anymore in your life. Yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 1: But the thing is, for me, the revenge doesn't get
- 31:53Speaker 1: them back.
- 31:53Speaker 2: But we don't know. Maybe the revenge does get them back.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Maybe right, Maybe it's the revenge that gets them back.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Though the revenge punishes the people who put you there.
- 32:05Speaker 2: But ultimately, is he trying to get Mercedes back?
- 32:07Speaker 3: And I don't know if that's what happens in this story,
- 32:10Speaker 3: like do they end up back together or not? So
- 32:13Speaker 3: is the revenge a vehicle to get Mercedes back.
- 32:17Speaker 2: It doesn't feel like that to me.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Yeah, to me in a story like this, I mean,
- 32:22Speaker 1: I'm very interested in the revenge piece of it, but
- 32:24Speaker 1: I am so much more drawn to the happy ending
- 32:27Speaker 1: of it all, are you?
- 32:29Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 32:30Speaker 1: I am. I'm really more interested in Like in any book,
- 32:34Speaker 1: I'm like, show me them on the other side of this,
- 32:36Speaker 1: show me the ways in which and when I read
- 32:40Speaker 1: a book that doesn't have a happy ending, which of
- 32:42Speaker 1: course is a lot of books, I'm so frustrated sometimes
- 32:45Speaker 1: by the reality of it, and I'm like, no, show
- 32:48Speaker 1: me the ways in which this all worked out for
- 32:50Speaker 1: the better and everyone got what they needed.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I'm worried you might be disappointed with the end of this. Oh,
- 32:56Speaker 2: I know this is not a romance.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I read romance novels, romance novels or Guaranteed Happily ever after,
- 33:01Speaker 1: I'm aware that this is not a romance novel. I
- 33:05Speaker 1: do think there's going to be some satisfaction in the storytelling, though.
- 33:09Speaker 1: You don't set out to tell a revenge story and
- 33:11Speaker 1: not exact some revenge. Yeah, yeah, he is the hero.
- 33:15Speaker 2: In our story. Yeah, got it.
