- 0:01The character we exhibit today is a result of the past whether
- 0:06we start from the underlying habitual patterns of human
- 0:09nature or perhaps, even go back farther to the patterns of the
- 0:14vital animal nature. Much of this is actually built
- 0:18into the genetic framework of the being.
- 0:21But layered on top of this is the learn behaviors through
- 0:26socializing and through education and then comes life
- 0:30experience and the pressures exerted upon the Life by the
- 0:34conditions of the outer world and impacts and influences from
- 0:38the environmental Consciousness. All of which together creates
- 0:43the individual personality and character.
- 0:47As we recognize it today. While this is created by the
- 0:52souls specific need of experience of a certain type.
- 0:57The development and functioning of the external being is very
- 1:00much a product of these forces. This layered complexity is a
- 1:06primary reason. Why people believe that human
- 1:09nature or the basic character of the individual cannot be
- 1:14realistically changed to any great degree.
- 1:18We may add a veneer of culture or cultivation on the surface,
- 1:24but the underlying character remains what it was.
- 1:29SRI aurobindo in the mother. However, have shown a way that
- 1:32this Bedrock of character can indeed be changed.
- 1:36The process is painstaking, systematic and takes time taking
- 1:42the standpoint of the witness Consciousness.
- 1:44Observing the nature of the being, the purusa is able to
- 1:49disassociate from the outer nature.
- 1:52So that there is not an implicit acceptance of the framework that
- 1:56is in place. Then there's the For size of the
- 2:00steady, patient and persistent will to change.
- 2:05Following up on this specific, key reactions are observed and
- 2:10modified over time, there is an ancient legend about a Great
- 2:15Sage. Supposedly a doc oi highwomen or
- 2:20Thief at one point to escape detection.
- 2:25He pretended to be a renunciate, sage living in the forest and
- 2:31practicing meditation and other spiritual disciplines.
- 2:36He did this for so long that he lost all his motivation and urge
- 2:41to be a thief and transformed his nature into that of an
- 2:45enlightened. Why?
- 2:46So This may or may not be a historical fact but it does
- 2:53speak to something that we can relate to namely that awareness
- 2:58focused attention and consistent action can change one's life.
- 3:03In today's world, we see cases where individuals who have been
- 3:07extremely obese and out of shape decided to change their lives
- 3:13and took up a program of diet, exercise and positive
- 3:17affirmations, and succeeded in transforming, their body, their
- 3:21vital energy, and their mental focus.
- 3:25The mother observes quote. First of all, one must be
- 3:29conscious then control and by continuing the Mastery, one
- 3:34changes one's character. Changing the character as what
- 3:38comes last, one must control, bad habits.
- 3:42The old habits for a very long time, for them to drop off.
- 3:47And the character to change, we may take the example of someone
- 3:52who has frequent depressions. When things are not exactly as
- 3:56he would like them to be, he becomes depressed.
- 4:00So to begin with, he must become aware of his depression, not
- 4:04only of the depression, but of the causes of depression, why he
- 4:08gets depressed so easily, then once he has become conscious, he
- 4:14must Master the depressions. Must stop being depressed.
- 4:17Even when the cause of depression is there, he must
- 4:21Master his depression, stop it from coming.
- 4:24And finally, after this work has been done for a sufficiently
- 4:28long time. The nature loses the habit of
- 4:32having depressions and no longer reacts the same way, the Nature
- 4:37has changed in quote, reference SRI, aurobindo and the mother
