A volunteer at Britain’s National Archives, Michael Scurr, made a jaw-dropping discovery after 11 years of digging through 18th-century Navy records: a rare, early printing of the Declaration of Independence, found tucked inside papers from a captured American ship. Printed in Exeter, New Hampshire, just days after the original signing, this is one of only 11 known copies—and the only one outside the U.S. It was aboard the Continental Congress ship Dalton, whose crew, including a 19-year-old named Charles Hebert, were imprisoned after the vessel was seized off Portugal on Christmas Eve 1776…
