- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, guys, here we are, last break of the day.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Thank you, as always, Steve Harvey Nation, for riding with
- 0:06Speaker 1: us every single morning.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Junior, do you have a question for Mr. Harvey?
- 0:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I do, Unc, and I just want to get
- 0:13Speaker 1: your take on it and see how you feel about.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Life, Unc.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Do you ever think about, Unc, if you would do
- 0:19Speaker 1: anything differently in your life? When you look over your life,
- 0:22Speaker 1: do you think there's something you would do differently?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well... Look, man, I know that's not, you don't get do-overs.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I understand that. And I do understand that everything happens
- 0:33Speaker 2: to you in the exact order that it has to
- 0:37Speaker 2: happen in order for you to be who you are today,
- 0:40Speaker 2: the good and the bad. Now, I have learned recently
- 0:46Speaker 2: in my life that all those losses I took were
- 0:50Speaker 2: not losses. All those L's I took, none of them
- 0:53Speaker 2: were L's. They were lessons. that I needed in order
- 0:59Speaker 2: to think and feel the way I do today. You know, listen, man,
- 1:08Speaker 2: of course, as a human being, there are some things
- 1:12Speaker 2: if I play my life back, had I known what
- 1:15Speaker 2: I know now back then, of course, I would have
- 1:18Speaker 2: made a series of different decisions. But at the time,
- 1:23Speaker 2: I was making decisions based on the tools and the
- 1:27Speaker 2: capacity that I had. So what I'm saying to young
- 1:31Speaker 2: people out here today is stop beating yourself up about
- 1:35Speaker 2: the decision you made five, ten years ago when you
- 1:40Speaker 2: had the capacity of a younger person. You had the
- 1:44Speaker 2: tools of a younger person. Of course, knowing what you
- 1:48Speaker 2: know now. You would of course do it differently. But
- 1:53Speaker 2: that's not the case. That's just not how it's worked.
- 1:57Speaker 2: You're not allowed. You're not allowed to have the future
- 2:04Speaker 2: when you make your present decisions. You're not allowed that.
- 2:08Speaker 2: You don't get to know all the consequences as you
- 2:14Speaker 2: make decisions. You don't get that luxury. You don't get
- 2:18Speaker 2: the luxury of seeing all the ramifications of a decision
- 2:23Speaker 2: you make today. You don't get that luxury. Nobody does.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You don't get the foresight and you can't feel the
- 2:33Speaker 2: full reckoning of a decision you make as a young person.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You know, they say experience is priceless. It's a shame
- 2:41Speaker 2: you have to pay for it with your youth. It
- 2:44Speaker 2: just costs you your youth to get experience, man. And
- 2:48Speaker 2: it really is that way for everybody. So if I
- 2:53Speaker 2: could say something to young people, I would say to
- 2:57Speaker 2: a young person, look, man, stop beating yourself up because
- 3:04Speaker 2: you got it wrong. You are supposed to get it
- 3:08Speaker 2: wrong because you got to get it wrong to learn
- 3:11Speaker 2: how to get it right. See, if you don't ever
- 3:15Speaker 2: take the game-winning shot, then you'll never know what it's
- 3:20Speaker 2: like for the ball to go in and win the game.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And you'll also never know what it's like to miss
- 3:28Speaker 2: and lose the game. And both of those lessons have
- 3:32Speaker 2: to be learned. But what is the more valuable lesson?
- 3:36Speaker 2: It is when you miss the game winning shot. How
- 3:40Speaker 2: do you get the nerve to shoot it again? How
- 3:44Speaker 2: do you get people to rely on you to throw
- 3:47Speaker 2: you the ball where you can shoot it again? How
- 3:49Speaker 2: do you muster the mental capacity to get over the loss?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Because that's what you're going to need to know how
- 3:56Speaker 2: to do. You ever heard anybody say, man, I had
- 3:59Speaker 2: to get over that wind. It took me a long
- 4:02Speaker 2: time to get over that wind. You ever heard anybody
- 4:04Speaker 2: say that? No.
- 4:05Speaker 1: No.
- 4:05Speaker 2: But you know what you hear people say all the time?
- 4:08Speaker 2: It took me a long time to get over that loss, man.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I paid for that one. The lesson is in the loss.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You get a reward for winning, but that reward only
- 4:20Speaker 2: lasts a little time. How many times have people, how
- 4:26Speaker 2: many times you had to really understand this one right
- 4:29Speaker 2: here as to what have you done for me lately?
- 4:33Speaker 2: You can't really understand that what have you done for
- 4:35Speaker 2: me lately till you get some kids. Then you really
- 4:39Speaker 2: understand what have you done for me lately. Because kids
- 4:42Speaker 2: have short-term memory. See, kids just want and want and
- 4:47Speaker 2: want and need and need and need and they just
- 4:49Speaker 2: come up to you. They forget what all you did
- 4:52Speaker 2: to get them there. Here they come in with their
- 4:54Speaker 2: new problem and they lay it at your feet and
- 4:56Speaker 2: then when you say no or you got a problem
- 4:58Speaker 2: dealing with or it's taking you long to put it together,
- 5:00Speaker 2: they don't even know what it takes for you to
- 5:04Speaker 2: put it together. They don't have no idea, man, what
- 5:09Speaker 2: you've done to put this thing together. They just come
- 5:12Speaker 2: in there with the request because they don't know what's
- 5:15Speaker 2: behind the request. They don't know the effort. They don't
- 5:17Speaker 2: know the sacrifice. They don't know the work, the energy
- 5:21Speaker 2: that you put in. You know, man, and they just
- 5:24Speaker 2: keep coming with it. And it's a what have you
- 5:26Speaker 2: done for me lately? Man, you know how many times
- 5:30Speaker 2: I've had so many people, man, I come to you,
- 5:34Speaker 2: I can't get in. I got grown men, grown men
- 5:38Speaker 2: who are not my children, who blame me for their shortcomings.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I'm not responsible for your demise. I didn't help him
- 5:48Speaker 2: become successful, so now I'm the reason for his downfall. What? Bro,
- 5:54Speaker 2: how can that be? Man, so yeah. jr i look
- 5:58Speaker 2: back on my life with a whole lot but i'm
- 6:02Speaker 2: grateful for all the mistakes i made i'm grateful through
- 6:05Speaker 2: god's grace and mercy that he allowed me to get
- 6:08Speaker 2: up and pick myself up from every stupid decision i
- 6:12Speaker 2: ever made to become who i am today and i
- 6:16Speaker 2: don't care what you feel about me no more i
- 6:21Speaker 2: don't The closer I get to 70, the better I
- 6:24Speaker 2: feel about it. Y'all have a great day today. Talk
- 6:27Speaker 2: to God. He would love to hear from you.
