- 1:03Holly, and I'm a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 1:08I'm here today on the radio to share my story and I really hope
- 1:13that those are seeing somebody in this thing may relate what
- 1:18I'm talking about and. And if you do, and you've got a
- 1:21problem with alcohol, you know, Amcor, it's anonymous is always
- 1:24there as a solution, then yeah, I'll start my story by probably
- 1:31going back into into childhood, because that's where my drinking
- 1:36started. I think it was around year 7 to
- 1:41year eight kids bought alcohol to school and drink bottles and
- 1:47I tried it. It was behind the.
- 1:50To school down in a in a sort of like conservation area and
- 1:57living some trees and bring the whole and and they also had
- 2:02marijuana there and I tried some of that and I can't remember you
- 2:07know what happened that evening or the afternoon and yeah
- 2:15working stay and. Talking about what happened and
- 2:19stuff. But I I just felt terrible
- 2:21because they're they're paying here.
- 2:23They were teasing me, you know, about how I'd been, but I
- 2:26couldn't remember. But what did happen was I wanted
- 2:30to do it again and I started. It's very foggy in my memory.
- 2:37But year I I started just doing it like drinking and smoking
- 2:41weed every day. Almost every day.
- 2:45Yeah. And I know today that that's
- 2:47not. You know, quite normal behavior
- 2:50for a for a 12 year old. And I could have a lot of
- 2:54passionately and so like in fashion, I had the kids, she was
- 2:59an alcoholic. She didn't know at that touring.
- 3:02But yeah, I had to. I had to go down that path and
- 3:07my mum at the school tried to help me through those years.
- 3:12Unfortunately, I got in a lot of trouble at school just for.
- 3:16Bringing alcohol to school and things like that.
- 3:19And the school system didn't really know how to handle how to
- 3:24handle that. So they'd suspend me or expel me
- 3:28sort of thing, you know, to spend some time at home.
- 3:30And I'd be like, to a family. None of them drank, really.
- 3:35I had a drinking problem and certainly no drug problem.
- 3:39And I'd try and they'd say, like, why are you doing it?
- 3:43Why? You got to stop.
- 3:45You can't have that sort of thing.
- 3:46And it was like, I don't know, it was honestly like sort of
- 3:49baffled why I had to keep doing it.
- 3:53And I'd do anything to get alcohol and drugs right from
- 3:56that young age. And yeah, so my mum tried to
- 4:02help me a lot and I'd start promising that I wouldn't drink.
- 4:10And so I started what I know today, what I refer to as, like,
- 4:15you're swearing off alcohol, like where I promised that I
- 4:18wouldn't drink and I'd go a period of time, maybe four or
- 4:21five months, without alcohol or drugs.
- 4:25And that started right from age 1516.
- 4:30I started, you know, promising I wouldn't do it.
- 4:33So I knew I had a problem at that young age.
- 4:35And yeah, I tried. Doing things about it, but I
- 4:39didn't have the help of like the support of like a a or anything
- 4:42like that. But yeah, 1617 I swore off and I
- 4:46I did most of the year at school, got furry school.
- 4:51But what would happen is I'd start to notice other young
- 4:55people drinking at parties and things like that and they'd be
- 4:58like having a lot of fun and seeming to manage their alcohol
- 5:03and and stuff like that and one one would start up thinking.
- 5:06And it would be like, you're not, my mom would tell me you're
- 5:09not having any fun with their alcohol.
- 5:12You're boring. Your friends don't like you.
- 5:14You're not, you're not popular. You're not cool.
- 5:16A lot of negative thinking about myself, a lot of fearful
- 5:21thinking, like anxiety and things like that.
- 5:26And my mom would start telling me, oh, you know, maybe you
- 5:32should. Get away with it.
- 5:33So I mean maybe you could drink at this party this weekend and
- 5:36be all right, you know? And cause by that stage the the
- 5:41consequences of my drinking were pretty bad.
- 5:43Like friends wouldn't want to hang out with me anymore.
- 5:45My family were so like upset with me and the schools were
- 5:50like suspending me and things. So I'd be like oh maybe I could
- 5:54drink at this party and I'd go to and to and fro in my thinking
- 5:58like Oh no, I can't do that. Oh yes I can.
- 6:00No, I can't for about a week. Just thinking about drinking And
- 6:04eventually I'd drink on the weekend and it had started off
- 6:08again and I'd I'd drink, I'd drink all night other people's
- 6:12the alcohol. I'd I'd I'd become alive like
- 6:15I'd I'd feel great I'd feel euphoric.
- 6:18I'd dance and talk to people and just have a fun time and.
- 6:22Make all these connections with people like, you know,
- 6:25friendships and things, and have deep and meaningful
- 6:28conversations. And I thought it was amazing.
- 6:32And then the next day I'd wake up and it'd be like at a party
- 6:35or something like that. I'd wake up and I'd feel
- 6:37terrible if I wouldn't know what was wrong.
- 6:39And then I'd be in the bedroom just waking up and I'd hear
- 6:42everybody outside and I'd be like, Oh no, I'm going to face
- 6:45them and and I'd just feel that dread in myself and I'd just
- 6:50want to get drunk. High again, straight away.
- 6:54And that would set me off for like a Bender or a spray of
- 6:58drinking and drugging for a couple of weeks and it'd all
- 7:00happen again and get in trouble. And yeah, so that was what it
- 7:05was like in the younger years, but what happened as I went to
- 7:10university after school And so, you know, getting to more
- 7:15serious, like intimate relationships and.
- 7:18And my friends started to, you know, get good jobs and, you
- 7:22know, maybe go for a year of travel or whatever they were
- 7:25doing with their lives. My drinking and drugging
- 7:29progressed, so I just wanted to keep that party going.
- 7:32And I found nightclubs and, you know, a lot of fun.
- 7:38There was a lot of fun times, but unfortunately it caused me a
- 7:41lot of chaos as well because I failed at uni.
- 7:45I wasn't reliable. To do my work at any end, my
- 7:51intimate relationships would they'd always want to try and
- 7:54stop me from partying so much so they tried to help me and yeah,
- 8:00family members were sort of getting to their end of their
- 8:03tether with me. They were just so frustrated and
- 8:05didn't know how to help me. I had a few DUI incidents where
- 8:10I had a car accident, drunk and rode off a car and.
- 8:16You end up in the hospital and things like that.
- 8:18That was signed off and in the early 20s and yeah, so I'm like
- 8:22what I explained earlier with the swearing off.
- 8:25I try that again, you know it swear off for a couple of months
- 8:28and do well at uni, do well at everything.
- 8:31But inevitably, that thinking would come back to my mind that
- 8:35told me that a drink or a drug was a good idea and.
- 8:41And I'd have, I'd be forced to pick up.
- 8:43It was like a force in me. Like it it was, I couldn't not
- 8:47do it. It was, you know, utter and out
- 8:50of pair pair that made me want a drinking drug.
- 8:53And there was no stopping it. Like nothing.
- 8:55No one could talk me out of it. No one could, you know, try to
- 8:59make sense, talk sense to me or anything like that.
- 9:01It was just it was me. I wanted to do it and I'd
- 9:05contact old contacts and, you know, go out drinking with
- 9:08anyone that wanted to drink. The way I like to drink.
- 9:12And yeah, I caused a lot of damage.
- 9:14I couldn't see it at the time, but I heard a lot of people.
- 9:17You know, I remember one friend, about 24, she was getting
- 9:20married. I was meant to be like helpful
- 9:23at the wedding by being like an usher and stuff.
- 9:26And I totally You cause havoc on a hens weekend.
- 9:32And then the wedding, just being sorry out of it that I wasn't
- 9:35making sense and yeah, 'cause her a lot of friends.
- 9:37She had to end the friendship after that.
- 9:40'Cause her a lot of pain. And I was devastated.
- 9:43You know, when I found out she was going to end the friendship,
- 9:46I couldn't believe it. And yeah, I just felt sick in my
- 9:50stomach about how I'd be. And I know that I had a lot of
- 9:53shame around my drinking, like feeling terrible for how I
- 9:56treated her. But I just knew I couldn't,
- 9:59couldn't change it. I couldn't stop it.
- 10:01And I wound up in my first rehab at age 25 after a couple of
- 10:04weeks in the hospital in the mental health ward.
- 10:09And yeah, we end up in my first rehab.
- 10:11I gave it a fair crack. I got to a year without alcohol
- 10:16and drugs, and then that thinking came back again.
- 10:22So that was at age 25. I had a couple of more benders
- 10:26at age 26 and 27, but by this time, the benders would last
- 10:30months like they would last six months.
- 10:33And then the last one lasted 8 months where I was literally out
- 10:36of it 24/7 for that time. I picked up harder drugs as well
- 10:41in that time and really went very low with the illness.
- 10:45I was not functioning well at all.
- 10:49And yeah, that wound me up in a a.
- 10:52This time what happened was I was in a hospital sobering up in
- 10:57the mental health ward. I was locked up, actually.
- 10:59I was detained against my will and they found out I was
- 11:03pregnant in there and it was a massive awakening.
- 11:07I was just like, what? What What the Like I didn't know
- 11:11what I was going to do. I didn't have the word in a a.
- 11:15It's a 12 step program and I didn't have the first step is we
- 11:19admitted we were Payless over alcohol and our lives had become
- 11:22unmanageable. I didn't know that I was like
- 11:26use that word, Payless, but I knew I was stuffed because.
- 11:30I could not stop drinking and drugging cow.
- 11:33I'd been doing it since age 12 to now.
- 11:35I was now 27. I was pregnant and I was going
- 11:38to cause a lot of harm to that child.
- 11:39I knew that and I was desperate. I said an earnest prayer, like
- 11:45an honest prayer and I was like I need some help, you know,
- 11:48please help me with this. And my mom did everything to get
- 11:53me into another rehab and it was an IEA based rehab.
- 11:56They took you to a a everyday. I spend two months there.
- 12:00And I just had some serious you know working out my life to do
- 12:04and getting things back on track and a lot of therapy and going
- 12:07to a A everyday and I'm so grateful for that experience of
- 12:12going to A A everyday I started to hear things and I wanted the
- 12:18help luck. I was so smashed with this
- 12:21illness like my ego was destroyed of how low I went luck
- 12:25and nobody wanted me around in the end of become homeless and.
- 12:29Yeah, just using, just wanting that party to continue.
- 12:33And and I was, I found myself at this rehab and I was going to a
- 12:37A every day and they said like some things.
- 12:40And my mind was like, wow, I understand what you're saying.
- 12:44Finally, things were making sense and I was starting to hear
- 12:47things that made sense to me and that I remember going to a
- 12:51meeting and this lady was saying.
- 12:54It's the first drink that does the damage.
- 12:56If you go back in your own story, you'll see as well that
- 12:59the first drink sets off like a compulsion to keep drinking all
- 13:04night. You won't remember that's called
- 13:07a blackout, where you blacked out.
- 13:09And then the next day you'll feel so terrible, you'll shame
- 13:13and remorse and you'll want to do it again.
- 13:15And I was like, wow, I looked back into my own story and I was
- 13:18like, every time. I've had a Bender, like, and
- 13:22I've destroyed everything. I have had taken that first
- 13:25drink and it set me up to continue drinking.
- 13:28Even if I didn't have any more alcohol, I'd get it.
- 13:30I'd get it from friends or like, you know, steal it or whatever
- 13:34it was, do anything to get more. And then the next day it it was
- 13:38like a a cycle. It would go, I'd go again
- 13:41because I'd be feeling so terrible about myself.
- 13:44And yeah, so I heard that Lady say that and I was like, OK, so.
- 13:50I do have to stay away from the first drink, and that brought up
- 13:55a lot of, you know, just Oh no, I'm not going to be able to
- 14:01drink again. But honestly, I'd I was at that
- 14:05point where I knew it was all or nothing with the alcohol.
- 14:08I had to, I had to leave it and put it aside.
- 14:11I had to choose abstinence because I'd tried controlling it
- 14:15before, You know, just saying to myself, well, I'll have 6 drinks
- 14:18or whatever it was. So I was willing to to try
- 14:22abstinence. So I started in this rehab.
- 14:24I was obviously not drinking and drugging.
- 14:27I started the journey of abstinence from E alcohol and
- 14:30that's what a A is about. We don't drink and but we're
- 14:35happy about it because what happens is I started to hear
- 14:40more things in a A which was get a sponsor and do the 12 steps.
- 14:44And I was like OK. I haven't tried that before.
- 14:48I'm going to listen. A lot of people are saying that
- 14:50and it's helped them. So I I went on that journey and
- 14:55it's a beautiful journey where someone explains it to you, the
- 14:57sponsor explains it to the sponsee how to go through and
- 15:01take the 12 steps. And I've done that slowly over
- 15:04the last 8 1/2 years. I'm now 8 1/2 years coming up to
- 15:079 years clean and sober. And it's an absolute miracle.
- 15:12You know, in those early days I had to get to a meeting of our
- 15:15colleagues Anonymous every day. And because it was so temptation
- 15:23was so close, you know, to to drink and drugs or I was
- 15:26pregnant with my son and I I wasn't able to work because I
- 15:30was pregnant and I was going to be having a baby soon.
- 15:34So I I worked on recovery. That was my full time job, you
- 15:39know, And that is a job in itself.
- 15:41In this took a lot out of me getting clean and sober.
- 15:45I finished up at the rehab and I moved into my root accommodation
- 15:49and I went to the the meetings every day and people were so
- 15:53kind to me, like, you know, I had a lot of shame around how I
- 15:58had full and pregnant and things like that.
- 16:01And I was crying at the meetings of the Athletics Anonymous.
- 16:03Every day or every couple of days I'd be crying and people
- 16:07were so kind and they didn't shame me and they didn't judge
- 16:10me and they accepted me for who I was.
- 16:12And that was the real start of me being.
- 16:15Allowed to be honest about my problem, which was the alcohol
- 16:19and drugs and how much I would take alcohol and drugs and how
- 16:22to hide it from people and steal and lie and all the harmful
- 16:25things I'd done to people. I was honest about all that
- 16:28stuff and people didn't judge me.
- 16:29And that was so healing, you know?
- 16:34Yeah. So it's been an incredible
- 16:36journey of sobriety, now that. Great relationships with my
- 16:40siblings. My mum has been a journey with
- 16:43my relationship with my mum, but it's a lot better, you know, We
- 16:46get along today. She helps me with my son and she
- 16:49looks after him and stuff and she's.
- 16:51I'm so grateful for her sticking by me.
- 16:55I would have never have got sober without my mum, you know,
- 16:58getting me into that rehab and being there for me and my
- 17:01siblings and they did everything to try and help me.
- 17:05And still today they're there. And you know, even just last
- 17:08weekend, you know, it was my my son's 8th birthday.
- 17:12We had a big party and all my siblings were there enjoying my
- 17:16son and and yet such a miracle to be like that because yeah,
- 17:22part of my story is dysfunctional family as well,
- 17:25coming from that background where there was abuse and
- 17:27trauma. And so I've had to navigate all
- 17:30of that in recovery. I've had to face what I was
- 17:33running from, you know, with the alcohol and the drugs.
- 17:35I was running from myself and from the pain inside me and just
- 17:40trying to block it out, just trying to null it out.
- 17:43I'm just trying to cope with life, you know?
- 17:46And yeah, you know, I don't have to do that to myself today.
- 17:50I can be Corran to myself and I can do what's right for me,
- 17:54which is AAI have to keep doing AA.
- 17:57And people think, why do you do it when you're 8 1/2 years
- 17:59sober? You know, you think.
- 18:01You'd be fine now to just go about life and things like that.
- 18:06And what's got taught to me is the 12th step.
- 18:09So part of me staying sober today is trying to help other
- 18:13Alcoholics to mean to get sober and to maintain their sobriety.
- 18:17And that helps me to, you know, continue on this journey.
- 18:21And it's a beautiful thing, you know, like just like people were
- 18:24there for me. They gave me their to Worm and
- 18:26helped me to get sober. I can now do that for other
- 18:29women. That come into a A and help
- 18:32sponsor them to help them get sober.
- 18:34And it's a real, like an amazing thing in my life.
- 18:38It gives me a lot of joy to see people get sober.
- 18:42But that's not all my life is about, you know, I'm a sober
- 18:45mother. My son's ever seen me drink and
- 18:47drug. He's had a lot of stability.
- 18:49He's had a great childhood. You know, he's had a great
- 18:51school. We've got great friends and
- 18:53stuff. He's got hobbies and he's into
- 18:56like a couple of like extracurricular activities and
- 18:58stuff. There is no way I'd be able to
- 19:01do that without a A Yeah, I've had lots of adventures.
- 19:06I've had to build up hobbies in recovery because my already
- 19:08hobby was drinking and drugging like I thought I liked my sport
- 19:12and stuff as a young child, but over the time drinking took
- 19:15everything away. So you know, I've built that
- 19:18back up. I love hiking, camping, you
- 19:21know, I've done a big kayaking trip, a couple of them where
- 19:24I've kayaked down the moan bridge for 6-6 nights.
- 19:28Where you camp out of the kayak and stuff.
- 19:30Just had some amazing experiences sober and that lie
- 19:34that my thinking would always tell me.
- 19:35You're not having any fun without alcohol.
- 19:38You know you're not having any fun, people don't like you.
- 19:41Things like that. That my mind would always tell
- 19:42me. I know it's not true today.
- 19:45It's not reality, You know, people do like me and I can have
- 19:49fun sober. Yeah, So it's incredible to be.
- 19:54A member. Yeah, collects Anonymous And to
- 19:56be on this path, you know, I know I can go all around the
- 19:59world, like if I go on a holiday or going to stay, I can find a
- 20:03meeting and I can go there and I'll be welcomed.
- 20:05And you know, have people that understand me.
- 20:08And I know you know that because of my where I've been with
- 20:14addiction, I can understand others that have been to those
- 20:17lows as well and can can help where others can't.
- 20:21And that's what Alcoholics Anonymous is about.
- 20:23You know, Alcoholics helping Alcoholics.
- 20:25We're not paid or they're sort of like fate, like professionals
- 20:30or anything like that. It's all one alcoholic helping
- 20:32another. And and yeah, I'm just super
- 20:36grateful for that. It's not easy getting sober.
- 20:41It's a challenge. It's one of the hardest things
- 20:43I've ever had to do. But I would not change it for
- 20:46the world. You know, I don't want to go
- 20:47back to drinking and drugging. There's nothing left in that
- 20:50life for me. I have to maintain this, you
- 20:55know, sobriety. And I do that by going to a A.
- 20:57So yeah, if you've been listening, there's meetings in
- 21:01your local area. And I just thank you for
- 21:03listening to me, sharing my story.
- 21:07Thank you. We.
