Discover How Seals Stop Leaks in Engines and Machines
A seal sits between two parts that need to move or hold pressure without letting fluid or gas escape. When the machine heats up the metal grows, when it cools it shrinks, and vibration opens the gap for an instant. The seal either stays pressed against the surface or keeps a tiny controlled gap so the leak stays small. Soft rubber seals squeeze to fill the space; hard metal seals ride on a thin film or labyrinth path. The same idea keeps oil inside a gearbox, fuel inside a rocket engine, and cabin air inside a jet.
