- 3:05don't want to stop you please continue? How's it going? Very well?
- 3:07Thank you? You're for lack of a better term, you're you're dripping,
- 3:12you're snotting around this morning, you're getting stuff all over Well, I think
- 3:15it's this spring. I don't believe it. I don't believe it. I
- 3:19don't know it's a change of seasons. But did it have to come on
- 3:22with a vengeance? Yeah, gosh, it wasn't prepared to get a lot
- 3:24of underwear. A lot of people, a lot of people are suffering right
- 3:29now with seasonal things and it's only going to get worse. Count me among
- 3:32them. And you know the cicadas are are they coming? This is seventeen
- 3:39years? This is this this cicada year. I heard him talking about that.
- 3:43I grew up with them in Baltimore. When I was growing up,
- 3:46they were everywhere. But there's something going on and I just heard like bits
- 3:50and pieces of it. And maybe I'll put our but I'll put the research.
- 3:55I would like the research, but there's I want to stay in the
- 3:59house. There's also something else going on in addition to the cicadas. There's
- 4:02another sort of an invasion of some sort that's happened. I just heard a
- 4:05bit, and this is how rumors get started. So I just heard bits
- 4:09and pieces about it the other day. And it's the first time, I
- 4:11cont two hundred years we've had these two things happen at the same time,
- 4:14cicadas and locust or something. Well, it was two hundred years ago.
- 4:18No, No, you were not responsible. How have you been other than
- 4:21suffering from seasonal allergies and well, I have a touch of vertigo, which
- 4:26is most interesting about that last time. Yes, and it's still with me,
- 4:30but it's getting better, and I'm going to see a wonderful physical therapist
- 4:34at the Generations and getting some help there. Okay, so there's not a
- 4:40lot to do for it. I going to say, what is the treatment?
- 4:42What do they do? The treatment is just to know which way to
- 4:45move and which way not to move. And it's only happening now when I
- 4:48sit up and when I lie down. I mean, what's the alternatives?
- 4:53Have you set up? You lie down. I mean, there are no
- 4:55alter they know what, they know what to call it, and it just
- 5:00happens, and a lot of people suffer from it, some too greater extents
- 5:04than myself. But it's actually eased up a little bit because I was walking
- 5:09around like foggy all day and somebody said, so, what's new. But
- 5:14it has cleared up, and I'm grateful for that lay off. The bourbon
- 5:16girl. Oh yes, because that oh rock gut So my doctor gave me
- 5:21something to take for dizzyness and it made me feel like I was drinking rock
- 5:26gut wine, not that I know what that take. How do we know
- 5:30what part of the Mediterranean diet is mad Dog part of her boons from.
- 5:32I think it's on the unpublished page. Like the dark Web, there is
- 5:38a dark Webran die. So spring is officially here. It came in a
- 5:43little after eleven o'clock tonight, Millie. What is your favorite season? All
- 5:47of them? Okay, truly, I really am a four season girl.
- 5:51Now when the snow gets up to my nostrils, that's a little bit too
- 5:56much, but I really am a four seasoned person. Yeah, I love
- 6:00it. I love every season And that might sound a little strange a lot
- 6:04of people. I grew up in it, I live in it, and
- 6:08I love it. And this time of year you could get all four seasons
- 6:12in one day. Yes, I mean, that's one of the great things
- 6:14about Away. I mean when we woke up Tuesday morning. Truly, I'm
- 6:17talking about long underwear. Not that I have any, but if I had
- 6:21some, I would have return it on Tuesday morning. Write this down,
- 6:25Ryan, We've got rot gut, rot, gut, wine and long underwear
- 6:30on the show today. This may be because a good comedian could do something
- 6:33wonderful with that. And you're talking to her. Yeah, do you And
- 6:38you don't sew either one of those at the Shape Shop rot gut No,
- 6:41No, not yet. Do you sell at the Shape Shop? What's new
- 6:43at the Shape Shop? Oh? Everything. We are making some of the
- 6:46most wonderful fresh meals. And I have to tell you, Dave, there's
- 6:49new research that's coming out every day in the fact that when we eat clean
- 6:56and we eat fresh, we are giving ourselves a gift. And it's not
- 7:00just about what we eat at the moment, but what it does in our
- 7:04bodies. Moving forward, there's going to be some research coming forward that in
- 7:11our lifetime, by cleaning up what we eat, we're going to be able
- 7:15to avoid some of the heeneous diseases such as Alzheimer's, or make it so
- 7:21much more palatable for the body to deal with. Because we are what we
- 7:28eat. And that's not a Millie Snyder ism. That happens to be a
- 7:31fact. And I can't emphasize it enough. What we do at Shape Shop
- 7:36is small in comparison to what we want people to do in their life.
- 7:43You know, I now added I now have two Mediterranean groups. I teach
- 7:47a group on Tuesday, pardon me, on Thursday morning at nine point fifteen,
- 7:53and on Saturday morning at nine o'clock. And we chose Saturday because a
- 7:58lot of people for this reason and the other can't get in on a Thursday,
- 8:03so there's an option for Saturday. But in addition to and it's not
- 8:09just weight loss, but it's learning how to take care of yourself and all
- 8:13the people that you hold dear in your life. Because if we understand that
- 8:18the beauty of a meal is not just to hurry up and put it together
- 8:22so everybody's happy, Let's make it devoid of chemicals and preservatives. Because that's
- 8:28stuff that our body doesn't know how to handle, and it creates havoc inside.
- 8:35And the researcher, especially around dementia and Alzheimer's, is going to shock
- 8:41us as we continue to learn more and more about it. We need the
- 8:48gift of bringing it into our lives and eating as healthy as we can,
- 8:52not depriving ourselves at any level. My God, with Mediterranean you eat better
- 8:58than you've ever eaten. But people are afraid of the word diet. And
- 9:01of course right now we're living in a revolution of people losing weight with medication,
- 9:07and I am very worried about it. There was a great big show
- 9:11on Tuesday night. It was on television. Oprah Winfrey was the hostess.
- 9:20And I think a lot of people are going to keep doing it, but
- 9:24we don't know the downsides. We don't know what's going to happen later on.
- 9:28Where was Oprah on? The whole thing is pro she's a user of
- 9:33the injection, because Oprah is one of those people merely as you well know,
- 9:35going back to the nineteen eighties, at the height of her popularity,
- 9:39you know, she was a larger person and then she became like nothing.
- 9:43I remember and then she was kind of up and then down, and then
- 9:46she eventually came out and just said, look, be happy with who you
- 9:50are and whatever that is for you. But I'm like you, you know,
- 9:58I don't always do the healthiest things in the world. I'll be the
- 10:00first to admit it, But I just I don't this whole thing with medication.
- 10:03I'm a believer in the fewer medications that you take them. I second
- 10:07that most the better. And I see people that are of all age groups,
- 10:13not just older folks, I mean of all age groups, people you
- 10:16know younger than I am, that are you know, starting their day with
- 10:18a diet of ten to fifteen different types of pills. And there's no way
- 10:22that that can be good for you, because what are you going to?
- 10:26Where is your education happening? If you're just injecting something or taking a supply
- 10:33of pills, you're not doing anything to make the changes. And as a
- 10:37former franchise owner of weight Watchers, I can tell you I believe I've seen
- 10:43them all and they don't have a pretty story to tell. As we get
- 10:48to the end of that line, I hope it's going to be different this
- 10:50time. I believe in helping people the most positive way. But I don't
- 10:56see any positivity coming out. People want to quick fix, and that's just
- 10:58too, that's just who we are. Like I got that since last Tuesday.
- 11:03Yeah, and everybody wants a quick fix and they say, well,
- 11:05what are you doing? And again this is the it's not that new because
- 11:09you know, oh what twenty twenty five, as you said, you've seen
- 11:13it all twenty five, thirty years ago, it was we're gonna do this
- 11:16diet, and we're gonna do it. We're gonna we're gonna eat grapefruit,
- 11:20you know, for for you know, seven seven days out of the week,
- 11:22three meals a day, and see how that works out for you.
- 11:24Whatever. That when she was nineteen and caused an ulcerated stomach ye because if
- 11:28six grapefruits were good, she had ten. You know, everybody wants to
- 11:31do it a little bit better than what the rules are. So what's the
- 11:33average? Okay, I want to talk about Mediterranean diet. Give me an
- 11:37average, and I know everybody's different, everybody has likes and displaces. Give
- 11:41me an average day if I if I were doing the Mediterranean plan, give
- 11:46me lunch, breakfast, and dinner, what would I have on my plate?
- 11:50Well, I would I would start off with for breakfast, a poached
- 11:54egg on whole grain toast, a couple pieces of fruit, maybe some yogurt
- 11:58to go with that. Of course, everybody has to have their blessed cup
- 12:01of coffee if they're a coffee drinker, and that can be one egg or
- 12:05two and you can poach them, you can do them, you know,
- 12:09any way you want. That's just a good substantial breakfast. For lunch,
- 12:13you could have a piece of a baked salmon, a beautiful salad sprinkled with
- 12:18some feti, cheese, maybe lettuce, tomato, the things that you like
- 12:20to eat with that. If you want to have a whole grain with that,
- 12:24you can, and there's some great whole grain breads out there. One
- 12:28slice. And for dinner you might want to, you know, we don't
- 12:33want to overdo the fish, but how about chicken and a baked potato with
- 12:37one or two vegetables, maybe not the vegetables, and a salad. And
- 12:41then for dessert, let's have a baked apple with sugar free whip topping,
- 12:46or chocolate pudding with sugar free whip topping. And that's just a typical day.
- 12:52Typical day, okay, and you teach all of this stuff. That's
- 12:56the thing about if you want to learn about it. Each I sit in
- 12:58the meeting room and I watch people just loving what's happening to them. I
- 13:03have one lady who comes and she says, I've never felt better. Why
- 13:09Because she's not including some of the chemicals that's in the processed food in her
- 13:16body. She feels better, She has more energy. And what's better than
- 13:22that being able to get up and do because you are what you eat,
- 13:26and if you're eating better, you feel better. Now. It doesn't happen
- 13:30dramatically. It doesn't happen like from two o'clock in the afternoon till four.
- 13:33But let's do it for a couple of days. Let's get a good couple
- 13:37of weeks under our belt, and let's talk about how good you feel.
- 13:41Your blood pressure improves, your overall in, your overall stamina increases, and
- 13:48those are things we can't put a dollar value to. Oh, well,
- 13:52that's what it costs me. Where is the health store? Because I want
- 13:54to go to it. You know, there is no place where you can
- 13:58go and buy your health. We need to provide it for ourselfs all right,
- 14:03before we let you go, don't go yet. I got to tell
- 14:05you a couple of things. All right, Well, go ahead April first,
- 14:07April fools Day, it's coming soon. I believe it's a Monday.
- 14:11You need to check your calendar. On April Fool's Day, April first,
- 14:16Shape Shop will celebrate Monday. It is, thank goodness, we will celebrate
- 14:22our forty eighth year of having Shape Shop. Most of them were at Patrick's
- 14:26Streep and now we're at seven oh six Central Avenue. And on that day,
- 14:31from the minute we open until we close, everybody who comes in is
- 14:35going to have a free ice cream gun, all right, and that could
- 14:39be sugar free or it can it's allay April First. You can come in
- 14:43early, then come back later, Okay, come back with with the disguise
- 14:46on, yeah, or whatever. So that's one thing. What's the second
- 14:52thing. The second thing is why I wanted to make a point to tell
- 14:54you that I have a second Saturday morning Mediterranean group. But we are making
- 15:01fresh, clean, fabulous food and we want people to avail themselves muffins without
- 15:07real sugar, pastries without real sugar, and sugar's not our friend. Now,
- 15:13some people don't like when I say that because they have one nerve left
- 15:18and I'm standing on it. Got it. But the truth of the matter
- 15:20is sugar tastes good in your mouth. But don't take my word for it.
- 15:24Ask somebody who is a bonafide and knowledgeable person around nutrition. The Mediterranean
- 15:31concept is not new. It's been around a long time. It came to
- 15:37our shores in nineteen ninety three, and we're benefiting now if we put it
- 15:41into work. But people have been eating it well before that. People of
- 15:45that leneage just when it became popular, but there's people of that that's their
- 15:50ancestral background. They've been eating that stuff. I made a statement to someone
- 15:52and said, I think Jesus ate the Mediterranean way. I mean, what
- 15:56supermarket did he go to? He had to eat fresh food. Yeah,
- 16:00and there were no preservatives back in that time. And life is a gift.
- 16:07Let's treasure it. Let's take better care of ourselves. Yeah, I'm
- 16:10passionate about it because I believe in what I'm telling you. Bottle them on
- 16:14social media and the address is seven zero six Central Avenue. We're just a
- 16:19block and a half west of five Corners and we have new traffic lights at
- 16:25five corners. Oh they're so big, it's wonderful. But we're up the
- 16:27street from those big tracks and I plan on being there on April first too.
- 16:32Please, you can have sugar free or you can have low sugar.
- 16:34You'll have to decide between now and then. All right, sounds good?

- 19:22is executive vice president and Chief Development Officer for the WVU Foundation. BJ,
- 19:26good morning, welcome to the show. Hey, good morning, Dave,
- 19:30thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. I know it's early
- 19:33on and I also know the BJ that it's an online event, so I'm
- 19:36not sure how tracking goes until it's all over, but any indication as to
- 19:40how things are going so far? I was just checkond day where about eight
- 19:44hundred ninety one thousand dollars already, So we're off to a great start.
- 19:48That is awesome. That is awesome. And so it's an online event.
- 19:51When did it officially start? Like at what time? Does it just midnight?
- 19:55Or when did it divisially kick in. Yeah, started at midnight,
- 19:57and we'll go through technically to go through three am, so we can be
- 20:02sure to capture everybody on the West coast. Oh, I didn't think about
- 20:06that, because I mean there's WVU folks everywhere. That's the thing. We
- 20:10are everywhere, all over the country and around the world. So that's what
- 20:14makes online so easy. People you know, don't have to worry about sending
- 20:17a check. They could just go online and support the cause that's most important
- 20:21to them. And this is the seventh straight year for this BJ, Is
- 20:25that right. It is the seventh. We started in twenty seventeen, and
- 20:30we've raised, not including the eight ninety four just told you about, we've
- 20:34raised about sixty six million dollars from twenty eight thousand gifts over the course of
- 20:38the program. Yeah. I was looking at some of your numbers when I
- 20:41was prepared for the show. Over sixty six million dollars has been raised since
- 20:47you started the thing. As you mentioned, I mean, that's a lot
- 20:48of money. BJ, It is a lot of money. And you know,
- 20:52it's become this day, it's become just a really fun day for the
- 20:56entire institution. And I think that it builds a lot of energy around you
- 21:00know, the entire entity of WVU, but also just among our donors who
- 21:04really kind of have fun with the day. And you know, I like
- 21:08to say that. You know, we're a large land grant institution with an
- 21:12academic, medical center and branch campuses, and I believe there's virtually something for
- 21:18every philanthropic interest folks might have at a place like WVU. And I want
- 21:22to get into that. What exactly does the money go toward. I mean,
- 21:25I know there's so many different things BJ, but give me, give
- 21:27me just a few examples. Sure, well, you know we're always from
- 21:33the academic side of the shop and student life side of the shop. We're
- 21:36always talking about scholarship support because we know that scholarships will always be critically important
- 21:41to the institution. But when we look beyond our traditional academic programs, we
- 21:47also have our athletics program, our hospital system, again, our branch campuses.
- 21:52You know, there are there are like fifty three hundred sons at the
- 21:56WU Foundation, So there's there's real every potential use. But I will say,
- 22:03to summarize, Scott wish to support supporting our hospital system, supporting our
- 22:07athletics programs are kind of our over our highest priorities. And we also think
- 22:11about our arts. Right, we have our college, your creative arts.

- 22:33I want to talk about the WVU of twenty twenty four. You know,
- 22:37no doubt the college landscape has changed over the years with the advent of online
- 22:41learning and such, but still obviously by the numbers that you've been able to
- 22:47put up in this what's already started to day, going back to twenty seventeen,
- 22:51there's still a lot of people that believe in the mission of West Virginia
- 22:56University and that's not changed much over the years. No, but it really
- 23:00has not. And I think, you know, people think about our graduates
- 23:03or just friends in the institution. I think that folks understand that change is
- 23:11a constant in the world that we live in, and you know, institution
- 23:15go through changes, and people are really loyal to the institution. I believe
- 23:18it's largely because of our you know, very specific land grant mission of servicing
- 23:26the citizens of the state of West Virginia, and of course we go beyond
- 23:30West Virginia, but that certainly is a critical part of who we are,
- 23:33and we have extension agents in every county. You know, we are very
- 23:37much a part of this state, and I think people rally around that.
- 23:41Dave, Yeah, exactly. So give us all the information forgiving for this
- 23:45day of giving. Sure, so if you want to go online and make
- 23:48donations that day of Giving dot w v U dot e d U, and
- 23:56that will take folks right to the site, all right. And if you
- 23:59didn't care mat you out, a simple Google search will get you there.
- 24:02So you did a great job on the social media. I was looking at
- 24:04it last night. You know, you've got a lot of information available up
- 24:07there as well. BJ. Best of luck, we have you on every
- 24:11year to talk about it. Certainly worthwhile calls. I appreciate you taking time
- 24:14out of your schedule to be here. Thanks a lot. Hey, great,
- 24:17great Dave, Thanks for having me always good to talk to you.
- 24:18All right again, BJ Davison again the executive vice president and chief Development Officer
- 24:23for the WVU Foundation. Day of Giving again kicked off early, kicks off
- 24:27at Midnight's going to go to about three eight. I love when Bj said
- 24:30we go to at least three am because we want to get the West coast
- 24:33people as well. So just go to that website he listen, or just
- 24:36Google search or fight it on social media. And again the money race goes
- 24:38to a lot of different things. At West Virginia University, Bigley Pickley Wiggley

- 25:02off to a victory. Go Herd, says the textra. You know,
- 25:03I had Rusty Web on the show yesterday, and Rusty was here to talk
- 25:07about the opioid developments out of Cavill County. But obviously Rusty, as the
- 25:11textra pointed out on the show yesterday, Attorney Rusty Webb is a big,
- 25:14big supporter of women's athletics, and it really is great knowing that the find
- 25:19that the NCAA Tournament is going on, the women's tournament, and we have
- 25:23both WVU and Marshall taking part in that. Now I mentioned if WVU wins
- 25:29their opening game, then they get to face Caitlyn Clark, who Here's what
- 25:33I'm not a to be honest with you. I don't follow college basketballs maybe
- 25:37as closely as I do other sports, but I will say, if you
- 25:41want to know who Caitlyn Clark is, combine Michael Jordan, Lebron James,
- 25:47and any other great players that you can name, and that's who Caitlin Clark
- 25:51is. Well, that's who West Virginia is going to get if they win
- 25:52that opening game. But going back to the Herd again, they play Friday
- 25:56afternoon and the team is leaving to go to Blacksburg today. According to this
- 26:00texture, big rally going on at the Henderson Center at two forty five that
- 26:03days to come out and cheer them off to victory, says says a Texter,
- 26:07And again, best will luck to West Virginia Universities women's basketball team as
- 26:11well as Marshall's basketball team as well and the University of Charleston. They're men's

- 29:15I want to bring this up. It's partly personal here. I've been
- 29:18asked to take part in an event tonight, and quite frankly, I don't
- 29:22know what to expect. And for someone who has been in the public eye
- 29:26or public year for the last thirty six years, I can't say that about
- 29:30a lot of different events. The event is part of festival in conjunction with
- 29:33the Western Indio Public Broadcasting Folks, and they do this once a month or
- 29:37so. It's called Three Things, and they've asked myself and a couple of
- 29:40others to get on stage and talk about ourselves. Our topic is, as
- 29:45you may guess, three things. Subjects are my first, my favorite,
- 29:48and my future. It's pretty simple, I guess. It starts at seven
- 29:52at the John Old Dickinson Family Homeowners Education and Community Center on Court Straet eight
- 29:56fifteen Court Street downtown Charleston towards open to six point thirty. Again, it
- 30:00begins at seven tickets or ten dollars. In addition to probably broadcasting the festival,
- 30:03the Glothalaty Foundation in the University of Charleston, Taylor Books and United Bank
- 30:07also and its sponsored. Two other folks are involved on stage, Darrell Miller,
- 30:11who is the founder and CEO of the Keep Your Faith Corporation, and
- 30:15Jennifer Keener, who is a social worker. So it should be a lot
- 30:18of fun. And I've got some information posted about it on my social media
- 30:22pages. And I'll say this. As I was preparing my bio for Jeff
- 30:26Shirley, who's the guy that puts this whole thing together, a couple of
- 30:29weeks ago, I had to email them a bunch of stuff about me.
- 30:30I realized all the stuff I do, and I thought, well, no
- 30:33wonder, I'm always tired, you know here and the other jobs I do
- 30:38and what I do on the other radio stations and ability whatever. But I
- 30:42have a good time with it. So again, it's not boring. It's
- 30:45never never boring to me me. So if you get a chance, come
- 30:48out check it out. I'm looking forward to it tonight three things. I'll
- 30:52let you know how it goes tomorrow morning. Fred Albert for the American Federation
- 30:55of Teachers Here, Fred, Good morning, How are you, buddy?
- 30:56Good morning, Dave. I'm doing well. How are you doing? Are
- 31:00you familiar with this three things thing that they wrote me into. I've heard
- 31:02it before and I'm sorry I have to miss it tonight. I have choir
- 31:04practice at my church. I was singing the church choir at christ Church,
- 31:08United Methodist, and I have choir practice or else I would come and see
- 31:14you divulte your three things, first, favorite and future. Oh my,
- 31:18so it's got more pretty heavy. It's got more f's than my high school
- 31:22report card. So but speaking of it, was speaking of letter grades,
- 31:27and we're gonna get into some specifics. I have you here today as a
- 31:32teacher. What's your letter grade on the last legs of obsession? Overall?
- 31:36Now know you got a grave on the curve and you can say, well,
- 31:37this is good and that's bad. But I've asked several people uh to
- 31:41give me. If you had to give an overall letter grade, Fred,
- 31:45what would it be? I think maybe a C minus. Okay, that's
- 31:48higher than some people gave it so C minus. Yeah, how did you
- 31:52arrive at the c MIN. I'll on the spot there. But one of
- 31:55the things that we always are encouraged by we have you turned that microphone over
- 32:00showed a little bit there. We got a pay raise for our teachers and
- 32:04service personnel, for public employees and for our state troopers. So that was
- 32:09a good thing. The other thing that we didn't get, and I know
- 32:15it's bear some controversy, is we have been asking for quite a few years
- 32:21now for some help with pei A and with student discipline in our schools,
- 32:28and that was Senator Grady. Of course, you know, did try and
- 32:34did address that that bill didn't pass. Why do you think it didn't pass
- 32:38for end Well, that's that's a good question. I mean, because you
- 32:42know, Senator Grady is a is a Republican. She is an educator,
- 32:45and she was one. She was on this show, she was on Hobby,
- 32:47she was in the press, you know, really kind of beating this
- 32:50thing about why we needed this thing, and it just didn't happen. And
- 32:53she was I mean I heard her talking about it on Hoppy afterwards, you
- 32:57know, and as a matter of fact, I might have her on this
- 32:59show here soon. She was very, very upset about it. But why
- 33:04do you think it didn't pass? I think there were some things in that
- 33:07bill that maybe needed to be looked at a little bit more closely. You
- 33:12know. I met with Senator Grady on several occasions and we spoke about this
- 33:15bill. I supported it. Some of my members probably didn't. But teachers
- 33:22and service personnel have an issue with the disruptive behavior that we're seeing in our
- 33:28classrooms unlike years past. And I was going to say that, Fred,
- 33:31not to interrupt you, but we're taking I mean, there was always the
- 33:35kid, you know, And I've seen these things online people say the biggest
- 33:37problems with students in public schools of the nineteen fifties as compared to today.
- 33:43I went to school in the seventies and eighties. I talked a lot.
- 33:45I know you find that hard to believe, Okay, I talked a lot.
- 33:49We had gum chewers, We had people skipping classes, right. We
- 33:52didn't have people assaulting teachers like we do now. We didn't have teachers,
- 33:57bus drivers, custodians that were fearful for their own lives. And all you
- 34:01got to do is just go on YouTube and pull up some videos. I
- 34:05mean, there's some scary stuff happened in fred in our public schools, absolutely,
- 34:08and we're seeing it in younger grades. Yeah, we've never seen before.
- 34:12And so what this bill would have done, it would have basically,
- 34:14I think it gave it gave the teachers more authority to get them out of
- 34:17there, to give them you know, here's the bottom line, though,
- 34:22these children, the children who are exhibiting these behaviors that are disrupting the classroom,
- 34:28they need help. And I don't think the resources were provided necessarily in
- 34:32that bill to find out what's causing this child to behave this way in school,
- 34:38to not follow the teacher's instructions, disrupting the whole classroom. What do
- 34:45they need? Is it mental help? You know? There are just so
- 34:52many issues there. But I'm not really sure why the bill failed. It
- 34:57passed in the Senate, it didn't pass in the House. Think that hopefully
- 35:00it will come back. I don't think Senator Grady's going to give up on
- 35:04it, because if you know Senator Grady, no, she won't, right,
- 35:07and she did say many many times, you know, we've listened to
- 35:10teachers because surveys were taken for a few years. We did a survey last
- 35:15year with wv A. We went around the state. We listened to educators,
- 35:20to parents, to legislators, to service personnel, to students and the
- 35:27same thing. One of the big overriding issues in our schools is student discipline
- 35:32and it's causing us to lose teachers, young teachers who just don't want to
- 35:37come to school and get hurt. And there's so many different I mean,
- 35:39and you and I could play psychologists on this all day, and it's been
- 35:43a week on this, but there's so many different reasons why Back when I
- 35:45back when I was a kid, you know, you got you got in
- 35:49trouble in school, you got in trouble at home too. Well, a
- 35:51lot of these kids don't have that support at home. And now we have
- 35:52a we have a we have a generation of parents to think, my kid
- 35:57does know wrong and you're picking up. And then you have also a lot
- 36:01of parents out there that aren't involved. You've got great grandparents raising kids.
- 36:05There's so many societal issues forradd to go into this. And we have so
- 36:08many children in foster care, or so many children they're homeless, that are
- 36:12homeless and they don't have that support, and they don't necessarily know right from
- 36:16wrong from an early age one. But it is an issue. It's not
- 36:21going to go away unless we provide some help. Let me read a text
- 36:24here for you. Okay, Texas, what was the administration supposed to do
- 36:28with the disruptive kids who aren't allowed in class? It's not like the school
- 36:31boards had the resources to have separate classrooms or facilities for the disruptive kids.
- 36:36That is a big issue. But you know, if we're going to correct
- 36:38the problem, then the resources need to be provided and an alternative setting within
- 36:44the school probably is the best answer. And I know that's going to take
- 36:47resources. It's going to take extra personnel to handle that. We're not bad
- 36:52mouthing the administrators because their hands are pretty tired as well. But when a
- 36:58teacher dismisses a child from the class because of behavior issues, they go to
- 37:02the office and the administrator then sends them back in a short period of time.
- 37:07That doesn't help end now, And you got to look at the numbers.
- 37:09I mean, that's one kid that's causing problems versus twenty five or twenty
- 37:15six others that are just there trying to learn and who ends up losing out
- 37:17in this. You don't want to see any kid left behind. But well,
- 37:21and you know, we've had examples where all the other children in the
- 37:23classroom, let's say we have one really disruptive child who's tearing up the classroom,
- 37:30all the other children have been removed from the classroom because that child can't
- 37:34be handled, you know, in a way that is safe. And it's
- 37:39just a it's a huge problem that we need to provide resources for. We
- 37:45need more school counselors, psychologists. And you feel that a lot of this
- 37:50was not address from from the legislature this so I really don't think that it
- 37:52was. But Dave Alance showing five of E Live is brought to you party

- 38:04pickup or dine in fred I want to talk about the vaccination bill. By
- 38:07the way, that's the subject of Hoppy's commentary this morning. In case you
- 38:09message, you can chat it out on the website and it's available WV metronews
- 38:14dot com Hoppy calling on the governor to veto the bill. No word exactly
- 38:17what the Governor's going to do yet. The governor does have a media briefing
- 38:21I understand later today where it may be addressed. It was House Bill fifty
- 38:23one oh five, and it would remove vaccination requirements for students in virtual public
- 38:28schools and would allow private and parochial schools to set their own standards, which
- 38:34could be different than public schools. Now, as I understand it, Fred,
- 38:37it is very limited, only impacting private and virtual schools. But you
- 38:40and your organization still have concerns. We do because you know, when we
- 38:45listen to the healthcare providers, those people who are really smart and know what
- 38:50they're talking about, we need to pay attention. And when this bill was
- 38:54in debate in Health Committee centered Health Committee picked, the room was picked with
- 39:00healthcare providers telling them this is the wrong move. West Virginia. From what
- 39:07I've read and heard, we lead the nation in being really good in vaccinating
- 39:13our children before they go into school, and we have very few outbreaks,
- 39:19if any, but some of the surrounding states I understand now have an outbreak
- 39:23of measles. Why would we want to go back to those times. You
- 39:29know, when I was growing up, I had measles, I had chicken
- 39:31pox, I had momps. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone else
- 39:36going forward, and we thought we had taken care of it. I also
- 39:39remember going to school through all my school years with at least two students who
- 39:45suffered from polio. Unfortunately, they recently, just within the last few years,
- 39:52have passed away, but I remember how difficult their life was because they
- 39:55had polio. I also remember standing in line with my parents to get the
- 40:00sugar cubes that had the polio vaccination embedded in it. That was a decision
- 40:06my parents made, and I'm so grateful they made that decision to help us
- 40:10have a healthier life. But you know, even the chair of Senator Health,
- 40:17doctor Moroney, Senator Maroney from up in Marshall County, the last night
- 40:22of the session before this bill passed, he pleaded for them not to pass
- 40:28this bill. He says, we're doing something that we're going to regret.
- 40:31Well, what are your concerns from a public school, from a public school,
- 40:35Because because this is primarily as an understanding, if this was they had
- 40:37to do with with with virtual schools virtually charter, virtual schools, parochial as
- 40:43somebody who represents public schools. Well, I think that Hoppy hit the nail
- 40:46right on the head in his commentary this morning, and I heard it.
- 40:51I think it's going to open up the door for something else down the road.
- 40:55You know. So it's it's a home, it's a virtual's school's student
- 41:00doesn't have to be vaccinated. Okay, but what And I understand that if
- 41:05they come to school to play sports, to public school, they have to
- 41:07follow the WVSSAC rules and be vaccinated. But I think it's opening a door
- 41:15to the community that we don't want to see because then it could trickle down
- 41:21into our public schools. If that person who's not vaccinated then gets a disease,
- 41:25gets whatever it is, they could spread it to someone else, a
- 41:31younger child who hasn't even had their vaccination yet eligible to be Yeah, measles.
- 41:37I heard a report on ABC News this morning. Ninety percent if you're
- 41:44dealing with people that aren't vaccinated. You and I are riding a school bus
- 41:45together and we're not vaccinated, I have measles, you have a ninety percent
- 41:51chance of catching it just by sitting next to me, not any kind of
- 41:53contact or anything like that. Ninety percent chance that was a reporter was on
- 41:58AB's news this morning. I want to go back here to the disc one
- 42:00build because I got a texture that somebody said it did pass both the Senate
- 42:02and the House, but it was sent back to the House to concur untechnical
- 42:07language and then the clock right now, that's true, that is, but
- 42:09the way it didn't didn't get passed is what you're saying. Before I let
- 42:14you all, want to ask you this question, Fred, And since you've
- 42:16been on last the American Federation of Teachers and your counterparts over to WVEA have
- 42:22agreed to what looks like a merger. So what's the upside for members of
- 42:27your organization and the wve A. Well, we're looking at when this takes
- 42:30place, and I do believe that our members will vote for it, and
- 42:34it's ultimately up to the membership in both AFT West Virginia and WVa. I
- 42:39think the new organization will be a stronger voice. We will be you know
- 42:45together, we're already together on so many of the issues. I just think
- 42:49it's going to give a stronger voice to our educators. And when I say
- 42:52educators, that's our classroom teachers, our classroom aids, service personnel, bus
- 42:58drivers, cooks, custodians. I think it will bring about a stronger voice.
- 43:01And that's what's the timeframe for that again, we're looking at it.
- 43:05Could it would be September of twenty twenty five when a new organization would merger,
- 43:10would be, you know, come into being. There's a lot of
- 43:14work to do before we get there. Are you having a job at that
- 43:16point or what? Fred, Well, we'll have to wait and see.
- 43:22All right, Fred, it's always a pleasure to have you on the show

- 47:07a Dave Island show, our service of fruit pharmacy and our phone calls or
- 47:12a service of Bigley Pigly wiggly text says politicians want to put pistols on teachers,
- 47:17but balk at putting paddles and their desk drawers. Paddles, not pistols,
- 47:22will get the disciplines desired, says a text. Textus says voters needs
- 47:27to defeat the AFT and WVEA any place they rear their ugly heads. It's
- 47:31one thing to work for better pay for teachers, it's whole thing a whole
- 47:36other thing to advocate for liberal social issues, which they do all the time,
- 47:40says a Texture. Texas says, perhaps the framework for separating the disruptive
- 47:45kids should be worked out before legislation has approved that removes kids from the classrooms,
- 47:50but that would take foresight in planning something. The legislature is not known
- 47:54for Texas wives. Fred Albert trying to butt into what private schools are doing
- 47:59typical of a teacher union, says a text. Well, I think he
- 48:01kind of explained that. He says that if it's if this happens in private
- 48:07schools, having some parochial schools or whatever, that it could eventually come into
- 48:10public schools. That was his answer to that question. Here's a solution,
- 48:16says the texture to the school discipline issue. Just give the kids guns.
- 48:20That solves all problems in school work, home concerts, movie theaters, political
- 48:22rallies, sporting events, parades, places of worship, and so on.
- 48:25Come on, Republicans, show us you really support the Second Amendment coming up
- 48:30on tomorrow's show. Remember a couple of weeks ago when I had Lynn Fruth
- 48:34on from Fruth Pharmacy, sponsor of this show. But she was talking about
- 48:37a bill that would try to shore up a definite problem when it comes to
- 48:40money's being paid out for prescriptions. Well, that bill that would hopefully fix
- 48:46the issue did pass the legislature. Lynn Fruth will be back on the show
- 48:49tomorrow to talk about it. Also to Mark naw Anty Commissioner Lance Wheeler will
- 48:52be stopping by and we're going to spend some time talking about human trafficking.
- 48:54That is on tomorrow's show. Hopey coming up at ten o six this morning
- 49:00with talk line from the in COVID studios. Speaking of vaccines. As we
- 49:02were earlier, Delegate Chris Print fro Americanawk County, who was one of the
- 49:06folks really pushing the vaccine exemption bill and again that's in front of the governor
- 49:10right now. Delegate Print, who was also the Deputy Majority Whip in the
- 49:15House and candidate for Secretary of State, will join Hoppy to talk about that
- 49:17coming up on the show today. Plus there's big changes coming to one of
- 49:21my favorite places, Glade Springs, which is owned by the family of Governor
- 49:24Justice Brad mclhonney. Will have more and that's Delegate Heather Tully's on the show.
- 49:30And also the Hobby's going to get into a fascinating story which we briefly
- 49:35touched on on yesterday's show when I Jason Pizitela on the Contractors Association. Gentlemen
- 49:39by the name of Captain Charlie Plum. He is a combat veteran who was
- 49:45shot down in Vietnam and spent six years as a POW. He's also in
- 49:51town. He was to be the keynote speaker at the expo, going on
- 49:53to the Kyle'see mcconvinced Center and going to get his story. I'm looking forward
- 49:57to hearing that coming up on Hoppy, which I think it's going to be
- 50:00in the second hour of the show. But Hopy Show is from begins at
- 50:04ten o six. If you'd like another way to enjoy your favorite metro news

- 50:38a state wide tornado warning. Now, if you got your cell phone set
- 50:44for weather alerts and things of that nature, it may go off, may
- 50:46not. If you've got a weather radio, I know some people have those,
- 50:51it may go off to just letting you know there's no danger for the
- 50:52area or whatever. This is part of the Spring Weather Awareness Month, So
- 50:58that is scheduled to go off at eleven this morning, So just so you
- 51:04know, all right, real quick, I want to throw this out and
- 51:07there's more about this on WCCHS network dot com. The Charleston Police Department is
- 51:12out with their crime numbers from the year twenty twenty three, and again you
- 51:15can go over to the website and read it into TAILWCCHS network dot com.
- 51:19What's called type one crimes. We're actually down in the year twenty twenty three
- 51:23from twenty twenty two. The only exception to that is malicious wounding in the
- 51:29city. Malicious wounding is up from twenty twenty two, up by four,
- 51:34not by a whole lot. There were five murders in the city in twenty
- 51:38twenty three, forty four rapes, thirty eight reported robberies, three hundred and
- 51:43eighty eight burglaries, over one thousand cases of larceny, two hundred and thirty
- 51:47three vehicles broken into, and one hundred and thirty seven cars stolen. Again,
- 51:52this is all for reported crimes within the City of Charleston from the Charleston
- 51:55PD. Now, the number of DUIs was way down. Overdoses within the
- 52:04city limits fell. However, sadly, overdose deaths were actually up, but
- 52:10still not the most we've seen in the city. That record was set back
- 52:14in twenty twenty one. Again, go read the story for yourself. WCHS
- 52:17Network dot com. Thanks for Fred Albert and the American Federation of Teachers for
