- 1:58SPEAKER_02: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the co-founder of Allura Skincare, Kyoko Gets.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: So welcome to the show, Kyoko.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: I'm so honored to host you.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Thank you so much for having me in, and it's absolutely my honor to be here.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: So thank you so much.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, thank you.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: And I would love to get started because I I want to learn all about um, you know, the line and how it really got started and you know where it began and um all the good stuff.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: So if you could take us on that journey, I'd I'd love to start there.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: So I've been in the skincare industry for over 20 years.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: I'm a licensed expedition and I am um um one of the founding members of the Kate Somerville.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: And then it's so funny, I was just listening to the podcast yesterday.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: Um brought me back so many great, great memories.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: Yes, I was painting walls with Katie, and then also I consider myself as a Dory.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Um, yes, we are two fellow dory then.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: Yes, Katie was Merlin, definitely.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: And then yes, I consider myself as Dory, like you know, like a mama bear at the clinic.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: And then so we all are compassionate people and we want to make a difference in everybody's lives, and then that was through via skin.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: Um, so even though Kate Somerville, um, you know, our location is on the mirrors place um back in 2004 in the same place.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: And then so, yes, we had many syllability clients, and then so, but not just only we were getting red uh the celebrity clients ready for the red carpet, uh, we also had like tough cases like rosacea, severe acne, um, eczema, or plastic surgery went wrong.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, we had so many tough cases as well.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: And then so um, yes, I started at the clinic and then I was doing treatment, and this one lady came in, she had a stroke, so um one side of her face drooped down.
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: And at that time, yeah, that time I was featured in the LA Times.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Um, I my specialty was muscle left treatment.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: So we use all, I mean, I use ultrasound microcurrent, and then also my magic hands to do that treatment.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Um, and then so I was talking about how you can help re-educating the muscles.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: And then so she read an article about me, and then so she came in as if I was a rest resort.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: Um and then she was wearing hat, and then I still remember to this day.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: And then she was wearing hat, she didn't want to see the mirror.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: Um, and then I did the treatment, and then after the treatment, she saw herself in the mirror and she started crying because she said, and of course that made me cry.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: Um she said that she hasn't seen her face like that ever since she had a stroke.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: So oh wow, that's amazing.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: Very, very special.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Um, that like I was to recognize like I was able to help somebody like her situation.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: And then definitely made me feel good about like what I do, and that's absolutely skincare is my passion.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: Um, even after 21 years, 22 years later, like my my passion is skincare.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: So I love that, you know, Kyoko, I don't want to interrupt you, but I love that you told us that story because I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: I'm somebody who's had ptosis in one of my eyelids, like pretty much my entire adult life.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: And it's been like this thing for me that's been always there, but like a cause of like so much insecurity.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: And you know, especially when you're a teenager and like going into your 20s and stuff.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: So I can completely understand like how debilitating it can be for people, you know, especially with like muscle problems and skincare.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Because that nobody talks about that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Like, I I love that you told that story because no one really discusses that aspect of like the musculature, like when that starts sagging, and when that you know, that's a huge problem.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: And that that that leads to so much trauma for people.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: So this is huge that you were able to do this for her.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, wow.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: And then so, you know, it's just the skincare, and then also it's like such a like a big effect to the self-esteem.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I wanted to create something like you look at the mirror and then like wow, just you get the boost of confidence.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: And then also from from her experience, I learned that wait a minute, you know, how long her results are gonna last?
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: Yes, I was able to give her the hope, but then like you know, next few days later she sees herself, and then the unfortunately muscle will go back where it was, right?
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: And then so that to me was like, oh my gosh, did I do a good thing, or did I just give her like a fake hope?
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: So yeah, yeah.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: So so my Olula journey was like, if somebody like her, like if she had a professional grade technology like device we use in a treatment room, and then also if she can do the treatment every day to herself, her results last longer.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: So that's how my Olula journey started, like how we can like supercharge um somebody's home regimen.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: Um, so that was always like my passion, like how we can change everybody's home routine, like very like simple, easy, and you can keep doing it, but then also deliver amazing results.
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: And then so, and then I the it's it's not a coincidence, but I was using the professional device from UK um at that time, and then that device was sold by Shannon.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: So Shannon is a co-founder and he's a president of Olula, and he is um amazing, and he has he's an award-winning device designer, and so he has developed a professional device for Dr.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: Pericon, and also he designed devices for Bliss Spot.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: So when it comes to yes, so Shannon, I know you're here, so I'm congratulating.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: I that's amazing.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Yes, absolutely amazing.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: So when it comes to device, like like I can't I cannot think of anybody else uh besides like you know, experts like Shannon.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: So yes, Shannon is here, so yeah, no, I mean that's yeah.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Hi, yes, hello.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: I um that's amazing.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: I did not know that you were um so talented in Syria.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I I started my career in you know, really the early 2000s, late actually late 90s is more like it.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: We were importing uh most of this non-invasive technology kind of developed overseas uh in in Europe.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: And so we started the company, we started importing those devices and training aestheticians on how to use things like ultrasound and and microcurrent and light therapy, you know, really 20 years before the stuff ever hit the OTC market.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, I was fortunate enough to meet Kyoko very, very early as we were launching those those technologies.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: But it's um, you know, kind of that bringing that ability to really achieve a dramatic result from your home care regimen is really what even in the early days we saw was the potential for these non-invasive texts.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Because as Kyoko said, it you have to be consistent.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: And it's very hard to be consistent when you have to show up at the at the spa every other day or every third day to make that happen.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: So the ability to be able to do these things at home and to achieve those kind of professional grade results is kind of been the cornerstone of what I've been doing for the past 20 years, and certainly was part of what we were trying to achieve with Alora, but understanding that it needed to be really a complete program that wasn't just technology, but also had the uh the product element to it, the what you know, products that were specifically designed to work with the technology, which is you know, and which is where Kyoko came in, right?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: She did she was the product developer for for everything that that Alora um brings to market.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's amazing though, that you guys like paired up and you know, you you brought in like the engineering aspect of things, and you know, uh Kyoko, obviously you're you know an expert in the the skin care aspect and you know, really like the skin in general.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: That's that's beautiful.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: I love when I love seeing that, you know, combining different aspects of like science and technology and brands because you know you can't do everything, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: So that's that's really, really cool.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: And then also them, like, you know, um I'm not like doctor like you, Doctor Ecta.
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I'm more like hands-on experiences, uh, what products and what ingredients will work for certain skin conditions and certain clients.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: And then also the, you know, it's just incorporating how the body's chemistry works.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: And then so um the, you know, I'm still learning, of course, every day.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: Everybody's skin is different, and then so that's why, Ulula, we have the device, we have amazing products, but then also we want to support clients, um, given, like, you know, definitely holding their hands and then also that giving them a guidance how to use the device and also products, and then also that how they can incorporate with other products as well, if that's what they want.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Now, I have a question, Kyoko and Shannon, both for both of you, really, because you know, I know that like at-home devices, like you know, yours is obviously like very well made, and you guys have done the homework and you know what you're doing, but there are a lot of people I know that were coming out with things like microneedling devices and like they really didn't have the background and they didn't have the expertise to be doing this, and it was causing so much like controversy in the skincare industry, right?
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: So, like I wanted like just know your opinion about that because I know that like it's so easy to fall down this like slippery slope of at-home devices that are not made by professionals, you know, such as yourself.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: And I I want you to really give some some feedback to the people listening about, you know, what you should be looking for when you when you opt for these kind of things, you know, like like because I I've I've just heard of just terrible, horrifying cases of like those micro microneedling kits that were like really big like a year or two ago, and like people were getting like you know, infections and stuff because like the people making them had no idea what they were doing.
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: And then I also like it, yes, it was it's absolutely horrifying when I see the someone with the YouTube videos, um, you know, microneedling, like you said, or like you know, some be some people even doing TCA pill to them itself.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: And yes, absolutely, it's horrifying.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: And then also that our device, our device has a dual side.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: So one side is for exfoliation, then the other side is for infusion, massage, and sculpting.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: But even like, you know, there are like similar exfoliating devices out there, and then people are using it wrong, like people are using it on the dry skin, or people are using it as if this one is like meant to do extraction.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: That's not how the this device works.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: And then so definitely like you know, all those years, like education is very big part of me.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: Um, even after the case Somerville, I was educator for like, you know, the professional device, uh professional brand and then professional device company, and then also brand ambassador for Tatcha.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: So always always like educating clients is really like I have a big passion about it.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I mean that's huge though.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: That's very important.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: That's half of I think the problem in the industry is the education aspect.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: Because, like, you know, yeah, go ahead.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Shann.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry to interrupt you.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I said I this is something that to me is you know very passionate about this topic specifically because there is so much potential out there on the upside for these devices to help people really transform their skin at home.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, elegantly executed devices that are easy to use and that have the appropriate technology incorporated into them have phenomenal benefits.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: But what we see so much of is in the industry is a lot of stuff out there that just isn't it's not only is it not well made, but all of this stuff works within a very narrow parameters in terms of outputs, like light therapy, like it's 450 nanometers or 475 nanometers, it's plus or minus like five or 10% to be able to treat acne or 650 nanometers if you've got red light and looking to do like anti-inflammation or wrinkles or or microcurrent, you know, you've got to be kind of subcentry, or even with ultrasound devices, which are you know device.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Um, as Keoka just mentioned, we have a patented design on that.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: But looking at the other devices that are in the market, like it's you know, the the things we're trying to do with sculpting and fusion, like you've got to be within a very narrow framework, like under 350,000 vibrations per second, uh, which is where we operate.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: But you start pushing above these parameters, you start getting into not only diminishing returns, but you start to get into where you're actually creating the opposite results.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: So you've got, you know, some some very kind of you know gross negligence out there, like people using uh roll, you know, or sharing needle rollers or not cleansing them.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: And I think that's you know, that that's one issue.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: But then you have kind of really just incompetence, if you will, on the side of the manufacturers who are don't understand the technology, don't understand what it's supposed to do.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: They just push the stuff out there that is either poorly made or it's not very well considered and it's not really in line with what the with the studies and the science shows us actually works.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And again, that's where we see the the opportunity here uh is to bring start in a market that works, but then to also, as Kyoko was just saying, teach the customer so not just send it to you and then go away, but send it to you and give you the opportunity to touch base back with us in two weeks or a month or six months or every month and ask questions as your skin changes.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: And so that's it's you know, every time I go on Amazon and see 30 devices on there that are all for you know 30 or 40 dollars that have, you know, and with a lot of these facilities, I've been to a lot of these facilities that that manufacture these devices and the quality is just as bad as you would expect.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: So it's definitely a buyer-beware situation out there.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: But if you can, and we're not the only good manufacturer, there's other good manufacturers out there.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: If you can find good devices, then you're gonna have a phenomenal result.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I think that's such a I'm so glad that you went into the numbers, Shannon, because honestly, this is honestly reminding me of I was watching something the other day, and uh I won't name the company, but um it's and it's not skincare, but like they were talking about how there was a discord between the engineers and the scientists, and that it really came down to what you're saying in the sense that like, you know, from an engineering standpoint, you want to just create something that's fast and it's do it's just doing its job.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: But then, you know, in the from the scientific aspect, it's very important to keep in mind the things you mentioned, which is numbers and ranges and you know, what is therapeutic levels versus not, what does work versus not, you know, and it's something that I really think that no one really is educated on in the industry.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: And more importantly, you know, this problem of mimicking um brands that are actually doing it right.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: You know, you can't just look at a brand and say, oh, look, they came out with this device, like for example, your device, and then just say, oh, we're gonna mimic it and make something that looks like it, but it's it has nothing, it's not even close.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, the engineering and the science is not even close to that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: So that's a very important um topic in this industry that I think um a lot of people need to be more mindful of is don't go to Amazon.com and just buy whatever the hell looks like what you want to have.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: You know, if you really want the device, you need to invest the money and you need to invest it into the companies that are really are doing the RD, you know, for these uh these products.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: So I love that you brought that up.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Thank you for that.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it also that like so many devices like ended up in a drawer.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: And then that's I mean, what you know, one of the reasons right I think is that because they're not using it right.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: So the reason because you don't see the results is maybe you're not using it right.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: So that's why we want to support our clients and customers and uh want to guide guide them the right path.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I I I really like that.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: And I know that on your website you guys have done a wonderful job of providing resources that are very educational.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: You know, if everyone listening, you know, if you go to allora.us, like you're going to see a lot of information.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: You're going to see a lot of, you know, step-by-step instructions, as well as like just really what the company is trying to, you know, put out there in terms of the information we need to have as consumers.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: So I really urge you, you know, whenever you're shopping for anything, you need to go to the website, you know, and you need to read and you need to really dive in to the brand.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: And I I I think that, you know, I really want to commend you guys because your website is really, really um very nice in that aspect, that it's very educational.
- 20:11SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's that's good, that's the core part of the brand.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: We've been talking a lot about the technology, which obviously gets me excited, but you know, the the whole concept behind Allora was, you know, how do we make a complete skincare regimen for somebody?
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: And so in our mind, based on our you know, Kyoko's experience in the spa rooms, and then we have another co-founder who is uh, I believe, trained plastic surgeon uh who's up in Manhattan, Dr.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Madeir and myself, we know it's like how do we want to create a solution that's complete.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: So not just a device that you have to take home and figure out how to incorporate into your regimen on your own.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: How do you use it with your existing products, but or a product line where you've got to you buy one of your favorite products and then you gotta figure out how to use it at home.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: It's really about for us about offering kind of products that are personalized so you can customize um our serums and teach that person how to use it with a device and then you know maintain that relationship with them over time so that you know as the weather changes, as their skin changes and their needs change, they have a resource to be able to kind of continue to optimize their uh their skincare routine.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: And so that that's really our goal is to create that relationship with the customer, give them the products and the technology and the support they need to kind of maintain phenomenal skin and healthy skin throughout the entire year.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: I really love that.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: And I think that that's you know, that's definitely something that's needed, especially now when there are so many brands out there and there's so much, there's so many products and so many options.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: It's very important to find, you know, uh brands that you can really go to as like your primary um routine, you know, for skincare.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I think that, you know, most consumers get so lost in all of the products and all of the brands, and and you know, it's not even about information at that point.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: It becomes more about just aesthetics.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: And I see so many.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: you know, even my friends, they'll be like, oh, this looks beautiful and I want to get it.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, that's I understand that, but you know, you have to you have to understand what your skin needs.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: So Kyoko, I want I I want you to tell us a little bit about that, you know, and and tell me about, you know, uh about the skin and what we really need from your perspective in terms of just healthy skincare routines or something that's you know more or a healthy, you know, a spa day that you would go to or you know what you would expect or what you should be going for you know in a general way I guess if you can.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: And then I like Orura, I wanted to create a company and a brand that offers like a personal trainer aspect for your skin health.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: So I'm like you know even if you go see aestheticians, dermatologists, plastic surgeon once a month or twice a month, if you want a certain result, you have to work at it, I believe.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: So you know home care is very important.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: That's why aestheticians dermatologists like Zay normally recommend you the products what they need for home care.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: So I absolutely believe that like you know home care everyday care is very important just like you know if you want to build the muscles your body and you have to work out right so that's always like my passion and also skin health yes like you know um my philosophy is if you have a strong foundation strong skin barrier function um you're not gonna have much problems like rosacea acne eczema so my my always my passion is like how to build strong skin barrier function so that's why like I love the ultrasonic foliation because it's really gentle it's great for sensitive reactive skin clients and then also the um it's not gonna interfere skin's pH balance and then also the um the other side infusion massage um and then the sculpting side to increase the blood circulation and the lymphatic drainage and then also the little like you know muscle massage.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: Yes yeah um that's very beneficial I believe so and then also that we are getting amazing before and after photo even just one treatment.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: So um sustainability like you know you have to continue to eat some like you can't um you need to continue to do certain like um home routine and then to to keep the healthy skin.
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: So and then also that that goes to the ingredient selection too I believe that there is no one like single bullet like silver silver bullet yeah I don't I I believe skin is like a your body so you need to have like vitamins antioxidants lipids and you know all sorts of like nutrients essential nutrients in the in the uh right amount so so that's always my uh theosophy and always like that's what my I believe and it's so that's how I'm educating my clients.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: I love that and you know I actually have a question because this comes up a lot is the difference between because you mentioned gentle exfoliation and I really I I like that that you use that terminology because people talk about like chemical exfoliation versus physical exfoliation and there's just a lot of information that I don't think is rooted in any literature or anything.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: I think people just kind of started talking about this.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: So I would love to get yours or Shannon's opinion on that about you know chemical versus physical exfoliation and is there really a difference or you know is it just a lot of marketing hype you know I I I'm really just I want information on that for the consumers.
- 26:21SPEAKER_04: I believe that because if you go to the professional places well obviously like you know aestheticians, dermatologists prostate surgeon like they know what they are doing.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: So but then like when you are a consumer and then try to do the AHA pills something BHA pill then like you know it can be like really strong and abrasive um so as physical exfoliation that like could be brush or scrubs and then it can cause a micro tear in the skin.
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: And then so the ultrasound exfoliation is very unique because I cannot think of any other device or products which can do exfoliation and then also hydrate your skin at the same time.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: So you know after the exfoliation there is no tight like stripping skin feel um after the ultrasound exfoliation it's your skin is so soft and smooth and also like dewy.
- 27:23SPEAKER_04: And then so that's why like ultrasound exfoliation is great for like you know even reactive sensitive acne rosaceous skin.
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: Because vibration loosen up the pores and removes the skin cells and then also impurities and then excess sevums um but it's it's the vibration so like almost like a shaving your skin I mean shaving shaving so it's very gentle like not much pressure at all.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: So there is no micro tier the um I'm sure the uh technology wise channel can explain it better but you know there is no micro tier no abrasiveness um like the chemical we don't use chemical for exfoliation so you know it's over and then just the uh we pair with uh refreshing essence which hydrates your skin during the exfoliation so it doesn't have any uh products i mean ingredients for the exfoliation yeah that's I'm sorry that that's an interesting question I think going back to like our days introducing microdermabrasion machines with you know with the the crystal bright base and we're trying to get like the hardest matter of fact we're using the aluminum at the time which is a number two on the hardness scale right below diamonds and it's like really all we're trying to do is strip the stratum corneum right we just we just want to really remove that top layer of dead skin cells.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: So and and I think the you know however you do that I think the result is the outcome is is the same.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Now you can overstrip that and again I I you know Kyoko obviously has a much deeper understanding of the of the chemistry side on the peels but from the device side of the technology side it's like that's all we're trying to do.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Now if we can do that without getting into the danger of getting into living tissue causing bleeding or pinpoint bleeding or uh thinning the skin out too much or kind of over exfoliating.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I mean that that to me was always kind of the sweet spot and that's where 15 years ago we fell in love with with ultrasonic exfoliation because you may get the same result as you might with with a with a peel because again we're just trying to strip away those those dead skin cells but we're not using anything abrasive we're not using suction we're not stressing the skin out additionally we're also not drying the skin out because as Kyoko mentioned we're we're adding a uh an essence to it that actually moisturizes the skin but uh my personal opinion is that the mechanical side is for some situations and for some people a better alternative just because you can exfoliate a little bit more in areas that you need it you know you can rework areas you can pick areas that you're going to use and not use and and so I just feel like you have more control um with with the mechanical exfoliation and specifically with ultrasound because you don't run into the issue of being able to impact that living tissue at all.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: It's really only going to exfoliate those those dead cells and leave the live cells alone.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah yeah that makes sense and you know I I'm so glad that you're clarifying that because that's exactly you know what I think a lot of people don't understand because they're you know this whole conversation and and what I was referencing earlier it it just became so big and it became this you know whole thing of yeah the microtears as Kyoko mentioned and you know it was a lot more than that where people were talking about well you're damaging your dermis and all this stuff and I'm like I don't think you're able to get to your dermis first of all.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: So um you know like it was it was a kind of a ridiculous you know conversation and controversy I think in my opinion but you know it's very important to understand exactly what Shannon said is that that top layer of dead skin cells is what we're trying to get rid of.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: So I guess you know whatever I guess works for you and you prefer, you know, it shouldn't be a matter of chemical versus physical it shouldn't be a matter of what works for your skin.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: You know there's a lot of times where I've used a chemical exfoliant and I touch my skin and I still feel that roughness you know what I mean and you can feel that my skin has not been properly exfoliated versus other times where I'll use a physical you know tool and it works or you know vice versa.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: So it really is more about customizing what works for you.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: So that's really I that that's really what I wanted um to really get out of that.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: So yeah I I agree with everything you guys said.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: So um my next question actually you know I want to I want to ask you Kyoko because you know obviously like Shannon said you know a lot about the chemistry side of things.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: What do you think people are you know people need to understand when it comes to for example like you you had mentioned AHAs and BHAs and peels and all these things.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: What do you think um some of the hallmark things in terms of educating consumers should be in the realm of skincare that's a tough question.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: I know it's a very big question.
- 32:16SPEAKER_04: So because everybody's skin is different like you know how AHA works and a BHA works and then so you know um in other words like and then also the I am a big fan of uh like pepane and bromeline and then for the exfoliation purpose as well um the exfoliate is great so um so the you know the everybody's skin is different so that's why we we're like the for the answer to your question is it's always like you know I'm I'm more hands-on like so I was always hands-on like I assess clients' skin and then I I I pick the products right for their skin and then I will do the exfoliation pro um treatment um where ultrasound again is the so versatile and I can use to anybody and then so actually as a matter of fact like I always chose ultrasound exfoliation for my clients first um and then like you know if somebody wants a little bit more uh exfoliation and then I will pick something else as well.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: So even right now I'm just you know that I talk to our clients and then if they still want to use the glycolic pad I will come up the protocols for these people.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: I'm not just I'm not against I I I want our clients to see the results and so that's always my passion.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: So if they still want to use their like you know glycolic pad, lactic acid pads and then I will come up the protocols for them.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: So um I'm not sure I answered the question but you No you did no you did you really did because I I you know I think it really just comes down to like you know we already talked about is that customization aspect that you know personal aspect of skin health and and also the like of course if somebody has acneic skin like you know I will prefer BHA pills and then somebody for more like you know aging purpose maybe I will use the um glycolic acid and then so I mean it's the process is different but like Shannon said it's trying to remove the skin cells um but then approach can be different.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: So that's like you know when it just I I need to assess their skin and then so if they are acneic or if they have a rosacea if they have sensitive skin and then also other exfoliate exfoliation process like you know derma planing um now it's becoming popular and having a moment but that's not for everybody.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: So you know I that yeah and also some some like some people shouldn't do it but for themselves yeah like go to an expert you guys like everyone listening like seriously I mean if you don't know anything about skincare or what's best for you the best place to start is to go to an expert.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: You know and let them like Kyoko said like let them touch your skin let them touch your face feel your skin feel the muscles see where you know what I mean like what you need what you don't need and that's a great place to start I mean I think a lot of people they shy away from that because they're like you know well if I go you know it's gonna be either this or that but it's like people have these preconceived notions I feel like in terms of like you know what to do for skin health.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: And that's for me, you know, with this podcast like one of the biggest goals I've always had is to like introduce people to things that work.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: Like the the companies that really are doing it right.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: And and that's because there's so much misinformation and I think with between that and the and the feeling of being shy or not wanting to be exposed or not wanting to feel vulnerable because let's be honest you know your skin is a very personal thing.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: You know we don't always want to show off our skin to people and especially if you have acne or scarring or you know it can become a very personal hurdle right to go into a spa and then have someone look at you.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: But I really think that that's a really good place to start is to is to go see a professional and to be like hey you know I don't know what's best for me but you know if you can guide me because that's what aestheticians and dermatologists and you know experts are there for.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: So yeah I I you definitely answered the question though Kyoko thank you so much for that thank you um yeah so I you know I I just for me like I I think that was really all the questions I had I just want to stress though that I'm I'm very impressed with what you guys have created.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: I mean I think that at home devices are definitely something that needs to be done right and I think it's very important to highlight the brands that are doing it right.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: That's something for me that's I'm very passionate about because I refuse to use you know at home devices unless I know exactly the science.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: So like that's really what I wanted to really relay here is that you know the Allura is a brand that is not just they know what they're doing.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: You know, if you haven't picked up on that already, you know, Shannon went into the numbers I mean you you guys have to pick brands that that really have the science and technology you know nailed down and you know Kyoko you know is obviously a very much an expert in this realm and you know so I'm I'm very excited that you guys have come together and created this beautiful line.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: So I really really urge everybody out there, you know, check out Allura.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: Again it's Allura.us for the website and I'm gonna link everything um for the concept art for this episode.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: So thank you so much you guys this has been wonderful.
- 38:17unknown: Thank you.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: Thank you let me let me give a quick shout out the uh the there there's a the designer who designed our device so anytime you take two things and try to cram it into one thing you end up with something general that's horrendous.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: And so uh there's a a the industrial designer who worked on this is a guy by the name of uh Klaus Rossberg and and Klaus won the um industrial design association design of the decade award I think back in 2011 for all designs in the industry in basically in the on the market between 2000 and 2010.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: And he's basically he's designed every device that I've ever brought to market whether it was under Alora or under a different brand but I really feel like he just brought a very elegant design to market something that that that's intuitive to use and certainly I think without his uh his expertise it's not something that that that we we could have done.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: I mean this this device specifically was three years in development.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: So we appreciate your sensitivity around that um and again there's there's uh take a look at the website if you have any questions please reach out to us directly yes thank you so much for that shout out you know that's a phenomenal accomplishment that even you know I hope everybody heard that you know um I I'm gonna add that in the in the caption for this as well because it's very important to highlight that the people behind this are true you know true scientists true um innovators and that's that's that's what we want you know we want the experts we want the innovators we want the people who are really out there and doing something that's you know very very novel and science forward for anything that has to do with our body so thank you for that Shannon I'm glad that you uh gave that shout out all right everyone listening uh check out check out all the links and check out all the um you know things I tag I'm definitely going to be sending out um you know the information for this episode as well um it's gonna be a whole newsletter so definitely keep your eye out for that and if you have any questions like Shannon said reach out to either the brand or leave your comments in our concept art and we will definitely connect with their team and um you know pass on your comments and questions.
