- 0:00Our number 2. Welcome back, Millerine Condon,
- 0:03Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon and Ken Miller talking
- 0:06sports with you. Appreciate you being here.
- 0:09We'll take you until 2:00 off the bench at that time with
- 0:13Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts until 5:00 still to come.
- 0:18This hour, Vinny Ayer covers the NFL for the Sporting News.
- 0:21He'll join us at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:22Trent will make some pick Circus Sports sponsor those couple of
- 0:26college football games. A little NBA action tonight as
- 0:29well as we continue on mattsnydercbssports.com.
- 0:33He joins the program. We're down to two.
- 0:36It's the Blue Jays and the Dodgers starting at Rodgers
- 0:39Center in Toronto. Hello, Matt Snyder, How are you?
- 0:44Probably not as good as you are. Feeling pretty good.
- 0:47How about that? That was a fun one.
- 0:49It really was. I I'm guessing it was not very
- 0:51fun for quite a while. Yeah, and then it was amazing.
- 0:55No, that that's for sure when the big dumper put one over the
- 0:58fence of that boy is a good run. But little did we know that
- 1:02Springer had other plans and the and the and the guy just killed
- 1:05all season long. Hoffman was unbelievable in the
- 1:089th inning so fast. I I guess we got to and the
- 1:13inevitable is coming and here come the Dodgers.
- 1:15I think they played in the regular season and and the
- 1:18Dodgers took two of three. The Jays won the Sunday game and
- 1:22I think it was a hair on fire save as the Dodgers came roaring
- 1:25back, if memory serves. But that aside, how do you beat
- 1:29this Dodgers team at I just Yamamoto to Snell or whatever,
- 1:34whatever order they're in Snell to Yamamoto to Otani to glass
- 1:38now. I mean, how do you beat them?
- 1:41Well, you've got to jump on the starting pitching early and
- 1:45that's what the the Brewers, they scored like they hit a solo
- 1:48home run if Yamamoto in the first inning, but that was about
- 1:51it. Like the there needs to be
- 1:54traffic. There needs to be stressful
- 1:56innings. You cannot let these starting
- 1:58pitchers get through 6789 because Yamamoto threw a
- 2:03complete game innings. You just can't the the weakness
- 2:06of this Dodgers team is the underbelly of the bullpen and
- 2:11they they will would love to use Rokie Suzaki basically and maybe
- 2:15a little Blake Trinon, but Trinon can be gotten to.
- 2:19There's a few other guys, but the more you make that bullpen
- 2:23throw through the course of the series, the, the bigger the
- 2:25chance the Blue Jays have to win it.
- 2:27Now a lot easier said than done because those starters are
- 2:30amazing right now. They're they're ER as something
- 2:32like 1.48 as a rotation in the playoffs.
- 2:36And that's not using openers and bullpen games.
- 2:39That's using every single guy going into the 6th inning or
- 2:41later. It's just ridiculous.
- 2:43Like they're averaging almost 7 innings to start in the post
- 2:46season from that rotation. And I, I like how it's kind of
- 2:51like making the starting pitcher a main character again.
- 2:53We started to get away from that and sold.
- 2:56You know, a lot of teams are getting away from that in the
- 2:58playoffs. But the Dodgers now, it is kind
- 3:00of an old school approach. The way they're using their
- 3:03starters. You cannot let them rack up that
- 3:07many innings because you can beat, you can get to that
- 3:09bullpen. So it's and maybe the Blue Jays
- 3:12have the offense to do it because they led the majors in
- 3:15batting average. They can draw their walks, they
- 3:17can hit for power. They're not as reliant on the
- 3:19home run as a lot of their power hitting team.
- 3:22So they have the type of offense to do it.
- 3:25You look at this matchup very, very one sided.
- 3:29So we're just looking for a confident, not pie in the sky.
- 3:33You know, everything goes right. Vlad hits eight home runs in a
- 3:36series. You know the What is the most
- 3:39realistic path for the Blue Jays?
- 3:41Not to hang around, not to win a couple, to win this series?
- 3:44What's the path as you envision it?
- 3:46What's it look like for Toronto to take down this behemoth?
- 3:50Well, the first thing is, and it's the easiest one, but it
- 3:54matters. It's it's when you're home
- 3:55games. And they didn't do it to start
- 3:57the ALCS, but they do have home field advantage here.
- 4:01And they were 54 and 27 in the regular season at home.
- 4:04They won both of their home playoff games against the
- 4:06Yankees and the ALDS. They won games six and seven at
- 4:09home when they were when their backs were against the wall.
- 4:12They need to win their home games.
- 4:13And if they do that, then they're going to win the series.
- 4:15Very simple. The Dodgers are four and O so
- 4:18far this postseason on the road, so again, easier said than done.
- 4:22They went into Philadelphia in 1-2.
- 4:24They went into Milwaukee in 1-2. Like I said, it's you've got to
- 4:29get to those starting pitchers and make the bullpen work and
- 4:32then you've got to hold up your home field advantage.
- 4:34So, you know, the other thing I thought about is I went back to
- 4:39before the playoffs started when I was in the Cubs dugout and
- 4:42Craig counsel was talking to some media members and he said
- 4:45one thing he always thinks that you need is some special
- 4:48performances, not only from the guys that you count on, but
- 4:52special performances that look like outliers.
- 4:56You know, maxers are coming out and surprisingly absolutely
- 4:59dealing against the mayors of Seattle.
- 5:01The Andres Jimenez 2 run home runs in two different games in
- 5:05Seattle. You need stuff like that.
- 5:07So whether it's your savage contend continuing to to look
- 5:11amazing as he's done in two of his three playoffs starts so
- 5:14far, maybe it's somebody like Nathan Lucas stepping up and
- 5:18having a big game. Maybe it's low profito now that
- 5:21Santander is out for the rest of the playoffs.
- 5:24And you know, and it's not like an outlier performance, but Beau
- 5:27Bichette returning, maybe Bichette comes back and has a
- 5:30gigantic series. You need stuff like that because
- 5:34you don't just need your best players to step up up, you need
- 5:36special moments. You know, you mentioned Bob
- 5:39Bouchette and and apparently he does want to come back.
- 5:41Where are they going to put him? I mean, Jimenez is that is, is I
- 5:45think locked it short. You're not taking Ernie Clement
- 5:48out of the lineup. You don't need ADH.
- 5:51Springer's got that role. I mean, I know he can play right
- 5:53field, but, but I, I just don't know where Bob Bouchette's going
- 5:58to go. And I love Bobouchette.
- 5:59I, I was hoping they were going to find a way to sign him maybe,
- 6:03I guess maybe him and his slides back over to second base.
- 6:08I might take him and as out too. He's a good glove.
- 6:12Though he's a great defender, but what you got out of him
- 6:16offensively you're probably not going to.
- 6:18Get it and. I feel like you're in a series
- 6:20where you need to out slug the Dodgers, though you're probably
- 6:24going to need the offense a lot more than the defensive aspect.
- 6:27Could totally be wrong. You know, maybe they take him
- 6:30out and they make a few errors and that helps the Dodgers win.
- 6:32But it's one of those situations where you're talking about a guy
- 6:35who hit 311 with a nearly 5, 100 slugging percentage in the
- 6:39regular. Speed you're.
- 6:40Going to have to out slug somebody and Jimenez.
- 6:43Those two huge, huge home runs aside, you're probably not going
- 6:48to get those again in the World Series.
- 6:51Matt, we went the Max of the American League and yet we still
- 6:54have this layoff. Do you like this layoff for the
- 6:56World Series even if everything's pushed back?
- 6:58We know if it's a short series, yeah, it gets too long.
- 7:02Is 3 days too much? Is it too little?
- 7:04How do you like kind of the set up here as we get ready for
- 7:06Friday night? I wouldn't mind.
- 7:10See, I have travel, so I like being able to book pants and I
- 7:13have moved to travel. I do think that's a big part of
- 7:16it. Like they've got so many people
- 7:18that they need to fly in. They have so much stuff.
- 7:21I think they like having the set date and knowing, you know, this
- 7:25is when you have to get everywhere in terms of just the
- 7:28baseball. Obviously you can't do something
- 7:30like, well, the Dodgers have been off for a lot of days
- 7:32because they slept the Brewers. So we need to hustle and we need
- 7:35to have a quick turn around and we need to start game 1:00
- 7:37tomorrow. Tomorrow.
- 7:38You can't do that to the Blue Jays because they unloaded their
- 7:42as much pitching as they needed to get through Game 6.
- 7:46But in terms of the baseball aspect, Thursday wouldn't have
- 7:50been horrible. I mean, the Blue Jays would be
- 7:52ready to go on on Thursday, but we're only talking about one
- 7:56day. So do we really need to upend
- 7:59all the travel just to start one day sooner?
- 8:01Probably not. So I'm perfectly OK with it.
- 8:03What are we? Who are we going to see on
- 8:05Friday night? Do you think it's going to be
- 8:06Snell? No, for one.
- 8:09Absolutely no. Is he going to face you, Savage?
- 8:12Savage, Yeah, Yeah, I think so, because I mean, obviously it was
- 8:16set up for Gossman, but with him throwing last night, even though
- 8:20it's a throw day, like give Gossman the extra day there and
- 8:24and throw him in Game 2, I think it might be a Savage.
- 8:28I wouldn't be. Surprised, I think, and the
- 8:29approach with him is while he hasn't been daunted so far, home
- 8:33game, game, game one of the World Series against the
- 8:36defending champion Dodgers might be a little more daunting than
- 8:38anything else. But I think the thing you say to
- 8:40him is, hey, you've got nothing to lose right here.
- 8:43Everybody expects the Dodgers to steamroll us, so just go out and
- 8:46have fun. You're pitching in the World
- 8:47Series and he probably. Will throw really well what a
- 8:50year he's had start enabled starting at the world.
- 8:54Series, it's a long ramp up, isn't it going to end up here,
- 8:58Matt? There's a lot of big picture
- 8:59things that are happening and you'll obviously be able to hear
- 9:02out there at the World Series. We'll get to hear from the
- 9:05Commission and everything that goes along with it.
- 9:08What do you look at this sport, the health of it, the Dodgers,
- 9:11the way that they spend, the way that they've been able to do it,
- 9:13Just kind of where are you and the concern that lays forward
- 9:17with a very real possibility of a work stoppage coming.
- 9:21Yeah, I'm still I'm not going to stray from being staunchly anti
- 9:26salary cap. I think that there's a lot of
- 9:28owners who need to spend more. I would love to put in a floor a
- 9:32lot quicker than a salary cap. And I'm tired of hearing the
- 9:35guys cry poor, especially when they get revenue sharing
- 9:38dollars. There's been a lot of Major
- 9:39League Baseball technology sales in the last decade and all these
- 9:43poor owners are just pocketing it like nutting with the
- 9:47Pirates. Just pocket stuff.
- 9:48Makes profits every year, doesn't even try.
- 9:51I am, however, a little concerned about the top end in
- 9:56the rich getting richer and richer and richer.
- 10:00But you know, part of that is the Dodgers shouldn't be able to
- 10:04outspend the Cubs to the that they are the Cubs.
- 10:07The Cubs should spend more, for example.
- 10:10But if all the teams who had a bunch of money, Blue Jays,
- 10:15Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, White Sox,
- 10:22probably Angels, where we are starting to get to a point where
- 10:27there's haves and have nots and it is worrisome, it at least
- 10:30should be a little bit concerning.
- 10:32Yeah, I'm with you, boy. The teams that got knocked out
- 10:38late, Brewers, obviously their prospects for getting back next
- 10:41year. And then the Mariners,
- 10:42obviously, it's a sting. They've never been there.
- 10:45They were so close this year. The Mariners and the Brewers,
- 10:48more likely of those two to, you know, be back in a spot to play
- 10:51for a World Series next year. Any thoughts there?
- 10:55Yeah, Brewers, I'm concerned for the Mariners like this might
- 11:01have been a like a once in a generation team for them because
- 11:05you're never going to have a switch inning catcher hit sixty
- 11:07home runs again. You're just not as much as I
- 11:09like Kel Raleigh and they went out and they traded for Naylor
- 11:13and AU as far as at the deadline now they're both free agents.
- 11:17They one of their calling cards was even though they play in
- 11:21such an oppressive home ballpark for power, they hit for power,
- 11:25especially when they were on the road.
- 11:27Are they going to have that again?
- 11:28How are they going to replace what they had in the second-half
- 11:30with Naylor and Suarez? They were a middling team, a
- 11:33middling contending team when they went out and they traded
- 11:36for those guys when they really, really got awesome was in
- 11:39September when they won 17 out of 18 and that was with that
- 11:42team that we saw in tech in the playoffs.
- 11:44They do have a good rotation, but it's not amazing.
- 11:47A lot of the rotation numbers are good because they pitch in
- 11:49T-Mobile half the time. I would be concerned there for
- 11:54the Mariners. So they do have a good
- 11:55foundation because when you get to build around some of those
- 11:59young arms like Kirby and Gilbert, in addition to Julio
- 12:02and Cal Raleigh, that's a great foundation.
- 12:04But we'll see how much they want to spend to build on that.
- 12:08And the Brewers, it doesn't matter for them.
- 12:10They they turn over and they turn guys out.
- 12:13It's their system. They're they're such a good
- 12:15system, at least in the regular season that I expect that
- 12:18they're going to be good for quite a while just because
- 12:20they're for me. I wrote an article and basically
- 12:23said like the Brewers right now or whatever.
- 12:25But he says the Rays are. OK.
- 12:28Makes sense. Does Yeah, I can buy that, Yeah,
- 12:31absolutely. So I see Kurt Suzuki got hired
- 12:34by the Angels and that. Was his job.
- 12:37I did too and it felt really old because he's younger than me but
- 12:40that's becoming more and more the norm anymore.
- 12:43But still we're continuing to see this younger and younger.
- 12:47It's not the old guy smoking a stogie in the scar anymore.
- 12:50Recycle, recycle, recycle. Trader Jackets, these young
- 12:53guys, Why? Why is that?
- 12:57Why do you think that we've gone this way in Major League
- 12:59Baseball and going a direction from the old stodgy guy to now a
- 13:03lot of these guys just fresh out of the game getting these
- 13:05managerial jobs. I don't know, I mean, maybe
- 13:08they're trying to find the next managerial star, like one that
- 13:12really seemed like it worked well.
- 13:14I just mentioned the race was Kevin Cash and I think a lot of
- 13:18a lot of teams are kind of wanting to go that way.
- 13:20But there has been success with guys who have been around for a
- 13:23long time. Rob Thompson when he it with the
- 13:25Phillies was in term and he made that his full time job.
- 13:28Same, same thing happened with Snicker.
- 13:29He was in term and he made that his job.
- 13:33And then we've got the retreads like Terry Francona and Dusty
- 13:36Baker, who's probably done now forever.
- 13:38Bruce Bochy who might be done. But like we've seen some of the
- 13:42Joe Madden hung around for a long, long time.
- 13:46One thing that sticks out to me is the catchers.
- 13:48It's you're always, I think people are trying to find the
- 13:50next Bruce Bochy there. Joe Madden was a catcher on the
- 13:53Miners. Kevin Cash was a catcher.
- 13:54We've seen the mayor's went from Scott's service to Dan Wilson,
- 13:57both catchers. The Cubs hired David Ross, who
- 13:59was the backup catcher. A lot of the line of thinking is
- 14:03the catcher's kind of the manager on the field.
- 14:05He's the one who calls the pitches.
- 14:07He deals with the the pitching staff.
- 14:09I think he manages the game plan with the pitchers before every
- 14:12game. So it's like on job training to
- 14:14become a manager. And I was just asked before I
- 14:18came on, I was on CBS Sports HQ and they they asked me about
- 14:20pool holes versus Suzuki. And I said, well, it might not
- 14:23be fair to pool holes. All things being equal, I would
- 14:26rather hire the catcher because of everything I just said versus
- 14:29the all time great player. Because there aren't that many
- 14:31all time great players who were great managers.
- 14:34I mean, we can think about like Frank Robinson or Paul Molitor
- 14:37or Pete Rose. None of them were like
- 14:39overwhelmingly successful as managers.
- 14:42Ryan Sandberg wasn't great in his Philly spent.
- 14:45I I there might be something there in it's a lot harder for
- 14:49the all time grades to teach because things came a lot easier
- 14:52to them. Now they did obviously had to
- 14:54work really hard on them, their craft or they would not have
- 14:56been all time great. But when you have that much
- 14:58talent, it's a lot harder to know how to deal with talent, I
- 15:02think. Interesting point.
- 15:04Did you get a non-stop from Toronto to LA?
- 15:07No, I I'm actually unfortunately and I'm pretty down about this.
- 15:11I'm not going to Toronto. I'm only.
- 15:12Doing the middle part in LA. So, yeah, man, I'm, I'm, I'm
- 15:16bummed, but it's going to be I, I, I hope it's a fun series.
- 15:21And I know I hate to put you through this, but I've talked
- 15:24about it before. We haven't had a game seven in
- 15:26the World Series since 2019 when Howie Kendrick hit the ball.
- 15:30Man, I'd like to have 7 again. I know that's a lot of a lot of
- 15:35tense moments for you, a lot of nerves around a week and a half,
- 15:38but you can. Deal with it.
- 15:39Well, yeah, yeah, that's for sure.
- 15:42Take it a little bit more. Hey, one guy we talked about how
- 15:45it's all come together in your article over at CBSSports.com
- 15:48for the Dodge Dodgers and that rotation.
- 15:51The guy that has been getting a lot of pub around here is Jack
- 15:53Dreyer called a bunch of his games in high school, watched
- 15:56him at the University of Iowa. And I'm turning into what are
- 15:59their more useful pieces that they've done and buried a
- 16:01different things with them this year.
- 16:03Just it's one of the stories that's important here in our
- 16:06market because it is a local guy, but a guy that's doing
- 16:09important things in that bullpen and they ask a lot out of him.
- 16:13Absolutely. I mean, if you look, he was, I
- 16:16know I put in the article like 5th or 6th and innings pitched
- 16:19during the regular season, maybe 6th on the Dodgers, which sounds
- 16:22ridiculous for a reliever. 76 and a third inning.
- 16:26That's a big workload, man. And a lefty.
- 16:30It seems like Bessia is is Dave Roberts go to lefty out of the
- 16:34pen but drives right behind him. So, you know, I expect that
- 16:39he'll get some work here. I don't know if the Blue Jays
- 16:41are necessarily going to pound the Dodgers starting pitching or
- 16:44anything like that, but I do think they're going to put up a
- 16:47lot more of a fight than the Brewers did.
- 16:49And with it being yeah and with it being A7 game series and the
- 16:53way that the five game series against the Phillies was laid
- 16:55out, they didn't have to dip in the Bolton as much because he's
- 16:58Tyler Glass now in game one and they could start the game.
- 17:00Game 4. Not going to be able to do
- 17:02anything like that in the World Series.
- 17:03You're going to see Dryer and and some big moments.
- 17:07The World Series, game one and two in Toronto, 345 in LA.
- 17:10Does it get back to Toronto? I'm sure you've been asked.
- 17:13You know all the hits that you've done to predict the
- 17:16outcome, Dodgers, and how many. I, I, I hope that I'm wrong, but
- 17:21I had Dodgers in five. I really hope it goes deeper
- 17:24and, and if he said which team would you rather win?
- 17:26I'm not just pandering to you. I don't want to reap.
- 17:28I like being able to stay. We haven't had a repeat champion
- 17:312000. So I really hope that it's Blue
- 17:34Jays and I hope it goes 7, but I had Dodgers in five.
- 17:38I like, I get it. Vladimir Guru makes $500 million
- 17:42on his contract. The tears coming down his face
- 17:45after they clinched. You don't see too many mega
- 17:48superstars like that that get affected like that.
- 17:50That in essence my team and yes, he's my guy.
- 17:54But it but it was good to see anything else say.
- 17:56Well, I it's a while ago, but going back to Friday night, the
- 18:00performance, Oh my God. From Otani Matt, you run out of
- 18:05things. I mean, you can scream from the
- 18:08mountain top, this is the greatest playoff performance,
- 18:10the greatest baseball performance, just on it's it's
- 18:12so ridiculous. Take us back to Friday night as
- 18:15you were going through and knowing, oh boy, there, there's
- 18:17probably going to be some work that we're going to have to do
- 18:19after this one. Oh, yeah, and I did, but I did
- 18:22it with joy. It was a labor of love.
- 18:24What was amazing was the chronology between the two
- 18:28games. Raleigh hit the game time bomb,
- 18:30then Otani hit the bomb, then Suarez hit the Grand Slam.
- 18:34It was like, you got to be kidding me, man.
- 18:36Those might have been the two biggest hits in Seattle history.
- 18:38Now you've got Otani going deep. I tried to tell everybody who
- 18:44would listen that this is not hyperbole.
- 18:47This is the greatest baseball game an individual has ever
- 18:50played. The only other time a pitcher
- 18:53hit three home runs in a game was a guy by the name of Jim
- 18:56Tobin in 1942 and he hit three home runs and he threw a
- 18:59complete game, but he gave up five runs.
- 19:02This is a playoff. That was a regular season.
- 19:04It was early in the season against the bad Cubs team.
- 19:08This was a playoff game, an elimination game for the
- 19:11Brewers. And he almost, you know, people
- 19:14can say single handedly dominates in sports and it's
- 19:17usually always kind of an exaggeration And he did not
- 19:20single handedly dominate this game.
- 19:22But this was about as close as you can get to doing it single
- 19:25handedly in baseball to to go 6 shut out innings and more home
- 19:30runs than the other team scored runs.
- 19:33I mean, that was that was the, we've seen so many huge moments
- 19:38from Otani and he's the most talented player that baseball's
- 19:42ever seen and he might go down as the greatest player of all
- 19:44time. That's going to be his signature
- 19:46moment. Glad he got it out of the way.
- 19:49Yeah, hope he doesn't have another.
- 19:51Instead of it being in like game.
- 19:52Four in the World Series. Yeah.
- 19:54We'll recap it with you next week.
- 19:56Matt Snyder, Thank you. What you do?
- 19:57Appreciate it buddy. Take care.
- 19:59Good. To talk to you, Matt Snyder,
- 20:00CBSSports.com, Dodoggers and Five.
- 20:02I even think he's right, he said.
- 20:04Is. That is that the shortest price
- 20:08as far as dodgers in how many they're not going to sweep well,
- 20:11I mean they could they could, but I would have to think that 5
- 20:16is the shortest price then 467 let's.
- 20:19See what we can find here Batting props series props
- 20:23series games series handicap game series double correct
- 20:29series score. Here we go.
- 20:30Your betting favorite is Dodgers and Five.
- 20:33Then 4. And six jumped over, so plus
- 20:373:30 for Dodgers in four and five.
- 20:39Then in 6 + 380, Dodgers in 7 + 475.
- 20:44Blue Jays in seven. The top choice plus 550 on the
- 20:47Blue Jays side. A sweep you can get 6 to 1.
- 20:50Toronto sweep a Blue Jays or a Dodger sweep?
- 20:53A Dodger sweep is that big of a price.
- 20:55A Blue Jays sweep you can get a 20 to 1.
- 20:58I I'm surprised that that's. Are you thinking about?
- 21:02It no, Hell no. Not betting against my squad.
- 21:07Don't like their chances, but not betting against them.
- 21:09Anyways, we got a couple of things to do.

- 22:53And again, you need to be able to go.
- 22:56It's Des Moines sports station 106.3 KX&O.
- 23:02Hi, Milary Condon, Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:05Let's get right to our friend Vinny I from the Sporting News.
- 23:08He joins the program. He's got a hard stop at in 20
- 23:12before 2. So let's get right to him.
- 23:15Vinny, good to talk to you. Trent and Ken, appreciate you
- 23:18being with us. Just real quick, your, your,
- 23:21your cats of Northwestern kind of a surprising season in a
- 23:24positive way, right? Yeah, I mean, Speaking of hard
- 23:30stops, yeah, yeah, it's actually not been bad if you look back.
- 23:35I mean, their losses were to Oregon and they hung in for that
- 23:38game for a little bit. And Tulane is playing really
- 23:41well down to the, I guess, the last play of the game last week
- 23:45they won. They've only lost one game with
- 23:47the Jake refs last. So their two losses are pretty
- 23:51acceptable at this point. And the Big 10, I mean, it's
- 23:55just very weird looking at it now with the standing in the Big
- 23:5910. I mean, Penn State known by the
- 24:01wayside, just wide open. I think after the obvious team
- 24:06there at Ohio State is in Michigan is in a good spot as
- 24:09well. Of course, Indiana having a big,
- 24:11big season, so interesting stuff there.
- 24:14The Big 10, which is now probably big, I don't know how
- 24:17many. Is it Big 23?
- 24:19On its way they're. Building, building, no doubt.
- 24:21Vidya, I want to talk to you about the NFC and the Lions
- 24:26looked really good at times and yet they still have that head
- 24:28scratching loss in Week 1. What happened a couple weeks ago
- 24:30against KC? The Packers have the best record
- 24:33right now. They'd be the number one seed
- 24:35yet. Feels like there's some warts on
- 24:36that team, certainly away from home.
- 24:39Is this wide open or do you think that there are a couple of
- 24:42clear cut top teams in the NFC? Yeah, I think it is a bit wide
- 24:48open. I think it comes down to the
- 24:51consistency. Can you find different ways to
- 24:54win? And the Eagles have been really
- 24:56good at doing that, right? But now one of their avenues is
- 24:59gone in the running game where really they're struggling.
- 25:02I mean, it's not even a fluke. Now it's the trend where they
- 25:05can't run the ball with stake on Barkley.
- 25:08Partly it's because they're inside offensive line hasn't
- 25:11been all that great this year. So that's a big problem.
- 25:15So they they were the team that could morph and beat teams.
- 25:18But some teams cannot change and adapt right from week to week.
- 25:23The Lions need the running game to work for Jared Goff to work.
- 25:26And if you take away the Lions running game, if you look at
- 25:28both of the games, they did not run the ball well and then they
- 25:32lost. So they're kind of some
- 25:34dependent teams. They got to get into the rhythm
- 25:37of what they want to do. There's some teams that are just
- 25:39going to adjust moving. The 49ers have done a great job
- 25:42adjusting with their personnel issues so that you would put
- 25:45them on the top of the list and then you put the Eagles down.
- 25:47This is why these teams are always on the short list with
- 25:50their coaching to make the Super Bowl.
- 25:51Now, I think it's wide open. I think the Bucks were a bit
- 25:54overrated. I mean, people bet on me about
- 25:57not putting them #1 to the power rankings.
- 26:00Like, quite frankly, they're not like the Colts, right?
- 26:02Going in, like you've seen the Colts dominate some games where
- 26:06the Bucks have had remarkable comebacks in a lot of games.
- 26:09And that's not going to sustain in terms of being consistent,
- 26:14right? So now they've got some injuries
- 26:16as well. So again, it's open.
- 26:18I think the Bucks may be fading a little bit.
- 26:21The Eagles, if they get their pass game going to make up for
- 26:24Barclays issues then they're going to be a force to be
- 26:26reckoned with going forward. What about the Seahawks, Vinny?
- 26:29This team's really got my AI as of late.
- 26:33Yeah, that's an interesting team.
- 26:35The only problem is they're the wrong bit of real estate right
- 26:38at the NFC West. I mean, I want to see them do
- 26:41it. I mean, we go all the way back
- 26:43to week one. They didn't look all that great.
- 26:45Nope. Against the 49ers.
- 26:47So can they get it down against the Rams and 49ers, like beating
- 26:51up the Cardinals? I mean, as we saw, the Texans
- 26:53don't look like they're very good team right now either.
- 26:56So that doesn't really move the needle in terms of how good the
- 26:59Seahawks are. So I don't know.
- 27:02I mean, I think they're going to take care of business.
- 27:04I mean, keep in mind they were right on the cusp of the
- 27:06playoffs last year, so they were pretty good team last year as
- 27:10well. I think what they've done is
- 27:11stabilize quarterback. They made the right call and
- 27:14going Stan Brown with a routine for Smith.
- 27:16As we look at it now and then, look, Jackson's been the jig bus
- 27:19emerged. They have pretty good running
- 27:21game. Their defense has really come
- 27:23through. So they're solid team.
- 27:25I think that's a great description for the Seahawks.
- 27:27I don't know if they're going to be spectacular, but I think they
- 27:30definitely are a threat. We get a wild card to the NFC.
- 27:34Drake Bay just turned 23 years old and what we're seeing, he's
- 27:36now third betting choice to win the MVP.
- 27:40Is this a mirage? Is this something that is
- 27:42sustainable? What do you think about Drake
- 27:44May? What we've seen out of him and
- 27:46we kind of look through the schedule, there's not exactly a
- 27:48bunch of daunting defenses he's seen to this point.
- 27:50Your take away on the Patriot signal caller.
- 27:54Yeah, I mean, I think it just comes down to some people are
- 27:56just better at coordinators than Josh McDaniels is one of them.
- 27:59I think Robert Sala, we're learning is one of them.
- 28:02And like when they're just doing the basics of teaching offense
- 28:07or teaching defense, they're special.
- 28:09And that's what McDaniels has done.
- 28:10And like Brabel having a better situational coach and we have a
- 28:13180 with his coaching staff with both Brabel and McDaniel,
- 28:17they're influencing the quarterback.
- 28:18So look, they're getting it done.
- 28:20They're not shying away, which I like, right, even tell more 40°
- 28:25expensive rattlers not shying away from being aggressive.
- 28:27You can't just put your quarterback in a shell, right?
- 28:31And Drake may has a massive arm. So you want to show that off a
- 28:34little bit. And Keyshawn Booty has been a
- 28:36story with Stefan Diggs. I mean, they've got weapons all
- 28:39of a sudden. So I think they might be buyers
- 28:41of the trade deadline if they had another weapon.
- 28:43Watch out. I mean, I think this Patriots
- 28:46team is legit. They have their resume have been
- 28:48inflated of course, of late. They beat the Saints of Titans
- 28:51and now they get the Browns this week.
- 28:53But that's kind of what the NFL wants, right?
- 28:55For these teams to be in position to rise for parity.
- 28:59I'll let you go on this, Vinny. The Chiefs looking like the
- 29:02Chiefs again. I, I, I mean, I can't put much
- 29:04stock in the way they just dismantled the Raiders.
- 29:07I mean, three first downs, come on, was unbelievable.
- 29:10The week before they just took it to the Lions.
- 29:13I, I, I are we back to just being here they go again.
- 29:16It's inevitable. Are the Chiefs the best?
- 29:19I know you've got them at the top as far as the AFC of your
- 29:22high most highly rated AFC team. Are the Chiefs back in your
- 29:26mind, Vinny? Or they never really left, but
- 29:28do they belong on top again? Yeah.
- 29:31I mean, The funny thing is if the playoffs are they, they
- 29:33would not be this crazy. Yeah, that's not going to last.
- 29:38The Chiefs are going to get on a hot streak here.
- 29:40I don't think anyone's going to be able to stop their offense
- 29:43for a while. Defense playing this well.
- 29:45So whenever things breakdown, the info who's the best team in
- 29:50FC, the surprise team to the FD, whatever.
- 29:54And then you're like, OK, it's all going back to the Chiefs.
- 29:57So that's what you're enjoying. So Mahomes again, great year.
- 30:01I mean it's his best year since this GMPP seasons.
- 30:04Unbelievable, Vinny, thanks for what you do for us.
- 30:06We'll run you down in a couple of weeks if your schedule
- 30:08allows. Thank you, Vinny Iyer.
- 30:11Thanks guys. Have a good one.
- 30:12You're the same vinnyiyersportingnews.com as we
- 30:14check out in the NFL, there is Vikings news.
- 30:17Carson Wentz will start. Max Brosnor is the.
- 30:20Backup. What's going on there?
- 30:23You know, Mike Palm's been saying this for weeks.
- 30:25There's. There's no injury, according to
- 30:27Mike Palm. JJ McCarthy is healthy enough to
- 30:30be your emergency quarterback, but he's not healthy enough to
- 30:33be your starter. Short week.
- 30:35They play Thursday in LA against the Chargers.
- 30:37Wentz has banged up. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:40This is not a healthy play. Well, Carson.
- 30:42And this is a big team. This is a big game for both
- 30:44teams. Oh, absolutely, both teams.
- 30:47I Palm's been saying that he he's got somebody with the
- 30:50Vikings inside the Vikings. I don't know.
- 30:52Well, maybe we'll ask him on Friday.
- 30:54That says that the injury, they're, they're blowing this
- 30:57thing up. Doesn't feel like a stretch,
- 30:59does it? No, not a.
- 31:03Not a one I've seen. He's played one good quarter of
- 31:05football. Was it 1/4 or 1/2?
- 31:06I was it. Was 1/4 he was terrible for 3/4.
- 31:09OK, so he. Won against your Bears.
- 31:11Right. So Yep, Monday night, that's it.
- 31:14And now he's quote UN quote hurt.
- 31:16What kind of ankle injury, sort of a broken ankle that you're
- 31:19good enough to? Something stinks here.
- 31:23I agree. I agree KOC hates him.
- 31:26Well, he, he invested a lot of me and he said Rogers.
- 31:29We're good, Aaron. We're good.
- 31:31I want to take you back to no. Don't go back there.
- 31:34Not that one. OK.
- 31:35I want to take you back to December last year.
- 31:37Yep. And we saw their backup
- 31:39quarterback at the time who? Was it?
- 31:42Who was it? Mullins.
- 31:43No. Daniel Jones.
- 31:45Oh, Daniel Jones. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:47And after things went down, I said, here's the way this is
- 31:50going to play out. It's going to be just what we
- 31:51saw from Sam Darnold. Danny Jones is going to take
- 31:54over for a year, for another year.
- 31:56He's going to be the latest reclamation project the KOC is
- 31:58going to put together now. Steiken's done a nice job.
- 32:04But do we have to give some credit to KOC on whatever work
- 32:07that he did with Daniel Jones in the How long was it?
- 32:10McCarthy Yeah, about two months. Because he's not good.
- 32:14Yeah, that's why. Starting to wonder?
- 32:16I mean, if you can't process things, if you can't get through
- 32:18it, if you can't do it with KOC, you can't do it anywhere.
- 32:23No, he's a, he's a brilliant offense of mine, him and Kyle
- 32:25Shanahan, as good as they are on an offense.
- 32:29I think I would take KOC at least as a quarterback
- 32:33whisperer, what he's been able to do when those two guys got
- 32:36together. And that's what led to Sam
- 32:38Darnold making his way from San Francisco to Minnesota, what we
- 32:41put together a year ago. There is too much weirdness with
- 32:46this situation. Too many Burmers go to those
- 32:50dark corners of the Internet, not those dark corners, dark
- 32:52corners of the Vikings. And you can find some things
- 32:55that say the exact same thing. Something is off here.
- 32:59Something is wrong. They swung and missed and you
- 33:03just eat the poison pill and say we got to move on.
- 33:05I mean, you just do it this quickly into a tenure because if
- 33:09anybody knows, I mean, if KOC goes to the front office and
- 33:12says that, don't you just say, OK.
- 33:15Yeah, I do. Yeah, I think I do.
- 33:17They've won 3 football games the short week against the Chargers,
- 33:21then they go to Detroit. Lamar Jackson's going to be back
- 33:25home to the Bears, at Green Bay, at Seattle, home to Washington,
- 33:29at Dallas. All of a sudden that game looks
- 33:30tough at Giants, All of a sudden that game looks tough.
- 33:34And then finish Detroit and Green Bay can.
- 33:37This team right now I think is closer to finishing last in
- 33:42their division than having a sniff of the playoffs.
- 33:44Oh, I bet they're with you. What do you think?
- 33:46The Yes No on the Vikings to make the playoff.
- 33:49Is, well, it's got to be, there's got to be the the yes is
- 33:52a a longer price than a no. Has to be has to be all right,
- 33:56let's go open up the app here and see what we oh.
- 33:59Has to be because their record right now is 3 and 3, three up
- 34:02and three down. They've had their bye week.
- 34:04They had that after the Cleveland win that they got
- 34:06lucky to win, yes. As they did, as I'm scrolling
- 34:10through here and looking for the Minnesota Vikings yes, no, to
- 34:13make the playoffs. I'm going to guess before I see
- 34:15it, the yes is plus 1:30, no -110 OK, or maybe 1 -, 150,
- 34:23maybe go the other direction. But you're right.
- 34:26All right? Holy crap, talk about being
- 34:29wrong. The Minnesota Vikings to make
- 34:32the playoffs. Now with the division, no, just
- 34:35make the playoffs, get in. Yep.
- 34:37Plus 450. Yeah, Vegas has written them
- 34:41off. Wow.
- 34:43That is an I hope. What about the Cincinnati
- 34:47Bengals? You like them to make get back
- 34:50into the hunt. I think that there's a big win
- 34:52for them last week, Trent, I think it was a big win.
- 34:55I think they're very much. I don't like the Steelers.
- 34:58Nope. Neither do I.
- 35:00Baltimore Yep. You can get Lamar Jackson back,
- 35:02but he's not going to fix your defense.
- 35:04Cleveland is an OK team. Not great, not playoff team, but
- 35:09not a really good defense. Yeah, really good defense.
- 35:12An elite defense at home. Yes.
- 35:14The Bengals are three to one to make the playoffs.
- 35:17On the other hand, the Ravens are still even muddy on the yes.
- 35:21What are the Steelers? Minus what Berg got to scroll
- 35:26through, because again, these are not in any particular order.
- 35:28Here we go. Steelers.
- 35:30Yes, is -140 you get the know it.
- 35:32Plus 1/15 parlay a few of these together.
- 35:36I I don't can you? You can do a couple, but then
- 35:38they. Yeah, they start to start to
- 35:40limit you if you put a bunch of them together, Think you see it
- 35:43all. That's a fun.
- 35:44Well, how about the Bears? Bears to make the playoffs?
- 35:47What kind of price would I have to give you?
- 35:49Say, you know what, that might be worth throwing in there in a
- 35:51party. They're not the worst team in
- 35:52the division. The here's the problem though, I
- 35:55think there's so many teams in the West.
- 35:57There's so many teams, I think in the NFC, Look, the depth of
- 36:00that conference, it's incredibly deep.
- 36:03The Bears to make the playoffs? Yes, plus 250.
- 36:07That's fair. It's about.
- 36:09About the right range. How many teams and seven make
- 36:12the playoffs? Obviously, Who are your?
- 36:14Who are your? Eagles in?
- 36:18Yeah, they'll get in. The Cowboys in no, Commanders in
- 36:23no. OK, so one out of that division.
- 36:26Packers in two, Detroit in three.
- 36:32Vikings in No. Bears in No.
- 36:35Tampa in Yep 4 Atlanta in maybe. Carolina in no.
- 36:43So you've got. 4 for sure. Yep, 4 1/2. 4 1/2 Niners yes.
- 36:47Seahawks, Yes. Rams.
- 36:49Yes. How tough is that?
- 36:51Yeah, we've got to leave two out.
- 36:53Right. Got to leave two out.
- 36:55And that Carolina story's a fun one, too.
- 36:58I don't think they're four and three.
- 36:59Yeah, I don't think it's sustainable.
- 37:00No, I don't either. But that defence that gave up
- 37:04the most points in NFL history a year ago?
- 37:06Yeah, turn the corner, perhaps. Playing better quarterbacks
- 37:09playing better, too. Miller and Condon Trench plays
- 37:12of the day. Circus Sports sponsor those
- 37:15you're listening to, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 37:19I found a couple of minutes here on a Tuesday.

- 37:46Great. Like turn the clock back day.
- 37:48Yes, it is. 1225 for Alec, he will join us and look forward to
- 37:53that as we'll catch up with him as what he's heard down in
- 37:55Kansas City for Big 12 basketball media day.
- 37:58All right, so it's Conference USA Today tonight with a couple
- 38:02of games. Are you interested in?
- 38:04Either interested, maybe as a stretch, but I'll bet.
- 38:07But you got to bet something. Right.
- 38:09And so we got 2 plays for today. We're going to play Lot Tech
- 38:13now, both them and Western Kentucky both last week playing
- 38:15in the Fun Belt or No Conference USA, they both got clobbered and
- 38:18both looked awful in the process.
- 38:20I do believe in the Lot Tech defense and that's really the
- 38:23only thing this this is a stretch, but I make plays every
- 38:26day. That's part of the shtick.
- 38:28And so we're going to play the texters in this one Lot Tech
- 38:31minus. The dip your toe, you're not
- 38:33going to jump. Yeah, this is not a head first
- 38:35dive. This is not a multi unit play
- 38:37that is for sure and I'm going to play the Warriors tonight I I
- 38:41guess just to have something to watch.
- 38:43Are they the late game they're? Probably they are, yeah, they're
- 38:45at the Lakers. So we're going to go there.
- 38:48I know it's going to be a public side with LeBron.
- 38:50Obviously, again, these are not there is not a whole lot of
- 38:55conviction behind these bets, so play at your own peril.
- 38:58I. Think I'm going to watch hockey
- 39:00and maybe the John Candy special on Netflix.
- 39:03That is a great call. I don't watch it.
- 39:05I've heard great things about it.
- 39:09I mean such. So what was the Uncle Buck?
- 39:12Oh, excellent. Excellent.
- 39:14Playing Strange automobiles. Classic, I think it was.
- 39:17It was a hell of a movie. The best Thanksgiving movie out
- 39:21there. It's or is it Christmas?
- 39:22It's a Thanksgiving. Movie was it yes yeah, it was it
- 39:25was phenomenal so I that's I think I'm going to do that maybe
- 39:28take a night off sports maybe a little puck I don't know for how
- 39:31much conference USALC it's a. Hard, hard ass.
- 39:35It's a bad. Action, on the other hand, bring
- 39:37it on, baby. That's going to do it for us.
- 39:40Glad you're with us tomorrow, Cappy.
- 39:42Mitch Holtis will be here. Bussey will be here.
- 39:45Bowen Camp on his Dodgers. Miller and Conda noon to two on
- 39:49the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Des Moines Sports station One O
