- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here, it's Thursday, it's the 20th of
- 0:17February. Oh, and it is a very good day as
- 0:21this week is drawing to a close just about, and I am delighted
- 0:26to have reached this point because, well, I've been away
- 0:29for the last couple of weeks in Canberra doing army things and
- 0:33well, as much as it's great to be doing, oh work that's
- 0:37fulfilling, Gee, I'm looking forward to getting home.
- 0:41I hope you're going well friends, I hope that if you are
- 0:43far from home that it won't be too long before you get to be
- 0:46back at home with those you love.
- 0:49Sleeping in your own bed with your own pillow.
- 0:51Gee, that's hard to beat, isn't it?
- 0:54Yeah, not too long. Only one more sleep and then
- 0:57home tomorrow for me. And if you are home, enjoy being
- 1:01home. Do it for me.
- 1:02Go on, soak it up so that between the two of us, we can
- 1:06enjoy a bit of home frontage today.
- 1:09And one thing that we can be sure about is that our home is
- 1:12not going to rise and fall with kings and their successors the
- 1:17way that Israel and Judah sure did as we're reading through
- 1:21this book. And we are going to continue
- 1:23with these stories of the kings and them trying so hard to
- 1:27succeed, but largely not doing very well.
- 1:30Let's continue in this story as we hear the difference between
- 1:34Jesus, our perfect king, and the best that humanity can offer as
- 1:38we continue to read through Second Kings chapter 12.
- 1:52Joash began to rule over Judah in the seventh year of King
- 1:55Jehu's reign in Israel. He reigned in Jerusalem 40
- 1:59years. His mother was Zebia from
- 2:02Bathsheba. All his life Joash did what was
- 2:06pleasing in the Lord's sight because Jehoiada the priest
- 2:09instructed him. Yet Even so, he did not destroy
- 2:14the Pagan shrines, and the people still offered sacrifices
- 2:18and burnt incense there. One day, King Joash said to the
- 2:22priests, collect all the money brought as a sacred offering to
- 2:26the Lord's temple. Whether it is a regular
- 2:29assessment, a payment of vows, or a voluntary gift, let the
- 2:33priests take some of the money to pay for whatever repairs are
- 2:36needed to the temple. But by the 23rd year of Joash's
- 2:41reign, the priests still had not repaired the temple.
- 2:45So King Joash called for Jehoiada and the other priests
- 2:48and asked them, Why haven't you repaired the temple?
- 2:52Don't use any more money for your own needs.
- 2:55From now on, it must all be spent on temple repairs, so the
- 3:00priests agreed not to accept any more money from the people, and
- 3:04they also agreed to let others take responsibility for
- 3:08repairing the temple. Then Jehoiada the priest bored a
- 3:12hole in the lid of a large chest and set it on the right hand
- 3:16side of the altar at the entrance of the Temple of the
- 3:19Lord. The priests guarding the
- 3:21entrance put all of the people's contributions into the chest.
- 3:26Whenever the chest became full, the court secretary and the high
- 3:29priest counted the money that had been brought to the Lord's
- 3:33temple and put it into bags. Then they gave the money to the
- 3:37construction supervisors, who used it to pay the people
- 3:40working on the Lord's temple, the carpenters, the builders,
- 3:44the Masons, and the stone cutters.
- 3:47They also used the money to buy the timber and the finished
- 3:50stone needed for repairing the Lord's temple, and they paid any
- 3:54other expenses relating to the temple's restoration.
- 3:58The money brought to the temple was not used for making silver
- 4:01bowls, lamp snuffers, basins, trumpets, or other articles of
- 4:06gold or silver for the temple of the Lord.
- 4:08It was paid to the workmen who used it for the temple repairs.
- 4:13No accounting of this money was required from the construction
- 4:16supervisors because they were honest and trustworthy men.
- 4:20However, the money that was contributed for guilt offerings
- 4:24and sin offerings was not brought into the Lord's temple.
- 4:28It was given to the priests for their own use.
- 4:32About this time, King Hazael of Aram went to war against Gath
- 4:37and captured it. Then he turned to attack
- 4:40Jerusalem. King Joach collected all the
- 4:43sacred objects that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ayaziah, the
- 4:47previous kings of Judah, had dedicated, along with what he
- 4:51himself had dedicated. He sent them all to Hazael,
- 4:55along with all the gold in the treasuries of the Lord's temple
- 4:58and the royal palace. So Hazael called off his attack
- 5:02on Jerusalem. The rest of the events in
- 5:06Joash's reign and everything he did are recorded in the Book of
- 5:10the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 5:14Joash's officers plotted against him and assassinated him at Beth
- 5:19Millo on the road to Scylla. The assassins were Josika, son
- 5:24of Shimiath, and Jehozabad, son of Shoma, both trusted advisers.
- 5:30Joash was buried with his ancestors in the city of David.
- 5:34Then his son Amasiah became the next king.
- 5:47Our Lord. In the midst of this story, we
- 5:49hear about these two construction supervisors who
- 5:53people just trusted implicitly because they were honest and
- 5:58trustworthy. Our Lord, thank you that you are
- 6:04the ultimate example of a God who is trustworthy and a God who
- 6:10when you speak, we know that what you say is the truth and
- 6:15that you always, always, every single time come through with
- 6:19what you have promised us. Our Lord, we are so used to
- 6:23dealing with things of this world which come and go, which
- 6:28ebb and flow, which are honest and then just a little bit
- 6:31deceitful from time to time because human nature is so
- 6:35broken. But you, you are different.
- 6:39You are perfect and you show us a better way.
- 6:44Lord, we can't live like this without your help.
- 6:48We need your Holy Spirit to grow to the point that it becomes
- 6:52stronger than our broken human nature.
- 6:56So Jesus, I just pray that your Spirit grows in US and that the
- 7:01fruits of your spirit grow in us too, so that we can be known
- 7:07amongst our people as honest and trustworthy, and that that would
- 7:11be reflected back to your goodness.
- 7:17Thank you, Holy Spirit, for coming, for dwelling in US, and
- 7:22for doing the long, difficult, and patient work of
- 7:25transformation in our hearts. Continue that work in US and
- 7:31help us to be more like Jesus. And we pray all of this in His
- 7:36name, Amen.
