Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Vegas Reveal, episode 31.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: You know, one of our great Las Vegas shows has now closed for good.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: We talked with one of the singers from Loret at the Wind about how the casting crew found out and what they're feeling about that today, plus the outlook for other shows opening back up on the Las Vegas trip.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And bars must remain closed in Las Vegas unless they serve food.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: The news has local bar owners upset.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: What we know.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: This and much more coming up on Vegas Revealed.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: This episode of Vegas Revealed is sponsored by Vegas.piza, a virtual pizzeria with delivery right to your door.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: And I'm Sean McAllister.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: I'm surprised that we haven't burned up by now.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, here in Las Vegas, we've had a record stretch of heat for August.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: It's been up in the 110, 111, 112, 113, 114.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Out in Death Valley, they set a record, it was 130 degrees.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: That's disgusting.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: It is, man.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And now it's even feeling a little steamy because we're seeing, you know, our first sign of monsoon finally, which is cool when the clouds roll in and we, you know, get a little bit of rain, but you can feel it out there.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So you add in a little bit of sticky on top of the 110, and it is not fun, but it's the desert, and you know, it doesn't last too long.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: That's the good thing.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Well, and uh for people who've been out here in Las Vegas in late July, into August and September, this is what we call monsoon season.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: This is typically when you know moisture uh flows into the desert, when we get these uh really like downpours of rain, thunderstorms, and when flash floods happen, but we've not really seen any of it.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: I think the last rainfall uh was mid-April, and then we finally, just within the past few days, got a few other kind of scattered sprinkles of rain, but nothing serious.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: I am waiting for a good thunderstorm.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: I love cloudy, rainy days.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Well, we you know grew up in New York State where we got a lot of those, and and now it's so rare that you actually look forward to it.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: The other day when it did rain, it's so funny because it depends where you are, you know, that's how the desert is.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, you said you did see some rain.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I never, so we drove home from we you and I were doing some media training, drove from Henderson up to where I live near the strip, and I still never saw a drop.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: So well, it I I never actually saw a drop of rain.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: The roads were a little bit wet, but then by the time I got to my house, uh there and I live in Henderson, so even like little parts of Henderson got rain.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: It wasn't even a widespread thing.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: I uh have a radar app on my phone just so I can see where the little pockets are, and I'm so tempted just to drive to where the rain is, just to get a taste of it.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: It's exciting, you know.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Everyone looks forward to it.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: People around the country think we're weird, but you know.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: It's true.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: It's an event.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: It's an event whenever it rains here, and we do, we get excited about it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's so funny.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Um, listen, bar owners not excited this week.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, we found out, you know, we thought there was going to be an announcement uh just last week about bars being able to reopen here.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So just so folks know, bars had to close during, like we had the opening and everything opened, and then they had to close um because they felt it was a risk because we were seeing high numbers.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And now we were supposed to get an announcement hoping that they would reopen again, but that has not been the decision.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: They've decided to keep the bars shut down.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: There's no, you know, time frame for that, they're just gonna remain closed for the time being.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And apparently, you know, Sean, it's because our case numbers and are elevated for transmission risk.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So they feel that that bars need to stay closed.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And when I say bars, it's bars that don't serve food.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and even in restaurants that have bars, you can't go and sit at the bar.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: You can't be uh, you know, served drinks at the bar.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: They want to keep the congregating at the bar down, but that's also really hurting bar owners because a lot of them have game top uh or bar top gaming.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: You know, they have the video poker at the bar top, and that's what they depend on for a lot of revenue.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: So, you know, the even the bars that are still operating and serving food, uh, which some bars have gotten creative with menu items too, so that they can, you know, say, hey, you know, here's our menu of food, but it's you know, like a bowl of chips or something.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I know they were doing that in New York State too.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, they were, they were, or there are, I guess.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: But yeah, and you know, it's caused such a, I guess, you know, another kind of controversial back and forth on Twitter with everyone not really understanding what the purpose is.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: They don't understand.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: If casinos and hotels can be open, why can't bars be open?
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: It's not fair.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, got a couple people that chimed in on our Vegas Revealed uh Twitter, uh, the last precinct, she said, uh, ugh, I see common sense is still missing in action.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And then uh Decade in the Desert, Vegas at Vegas Maple Leaf says this is so unnecessary, crushing so many, not even the direct bar staff.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: The knock-on effect is devastating as an example.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: September 1 will ruin so many lives.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: So, you know, people seem upset about it, but I guess you have to think big picture.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And I I know when I was hearing about the reasons of why they do it is they feel that if people go in, there's not food, they're just drinking, they get a little loose, they start getting a little bit closer, you know, and uh their decision making isn't always the best.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Well, nothing nothing positive happens when it gets all loosey-goosey like that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: So I mean, I assume that's the reason for the whole bar thing is they want people to think responsibly and and not just go get tanked and can you imagine the first ladies' night once the bars open back up again and people can uh go out and be close and you know I mean I don't know and going home and all that kind of stuff.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I wonder.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, and I wonder how long it will take for people to actually feel comfortable to do that.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm definitely I'll let other folks try it out first and then let me know how it goes.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Let me let me know how that goes.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Let me know how that goes.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is a hit to our businesses.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: We feel terrible about that, obviously.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: We have some great, great uh local businesses, some great small bars and medium-sized bars here in town that are itching to open and make money again.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: So it is hard, but I guess we have to do what the state mandates.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So that's that's what we're doing for now.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, uh something that's kind of crazy.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Kind of it's still an offshoot of um, you know, the the whole pandemic and congregating.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: We've mentioned it before here on Vegas Revealed that fans are not going to be allowed inside Raiders Stadium once the NFL season uh kicks into high gear.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: That has prompted, oh, excuse.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: I had a little thing in my throat.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you could hear it.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: I felt like I sounded like Kermit the Frog.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Um so that's prompted the fact that fans can't go to our brand new Allegiance Stadium to see Raiders games in the inaugural NFL season for the Raiders in Las Vegas.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Uh there's been a report that a group of season ticket holders are suing China because they are not allowed in their season ticket seats due to COVID-19.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: I think that's a bunch of tomfoolery.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: It's interesting.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Um, fans will think of anything, right?
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, the diehards will do anything that they can to get themselves in front of the game.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: So uh always interesting to see what you know comes of of that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I I don't know.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Prop probably not gonna win.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Uh I doubt it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: I doubt it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, probably not gonna win that one.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: But it is good.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: We're taping this on a Friday, and I did see, you know, Allegiant Stadium saying the Raiders were in the house, and then the Raiders just tweeted Derek Carr, uh quarterback running on the field for the first time out at Allegiant Stadium.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: So exciting times, it's getting closer.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, they can be there, it's just that the fans can't.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the team's first practice uh on their on their movable turf.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if you're from out of town and you haven't seen anything about Allegiant Stadium.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: There's this giant tray of uh natural turf that slides in and out of the stadium.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: There's two playing surfaces.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: There's this uh natural turf that's on this tray that slides into the stadium for the Raiders, and then it slides out of the stadium, and underneath it is artificial turf that uh UNLV, our college football team, uh, will play on, and that's what other events will be using as well.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's pretty cool.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Just can't wait to get inside and and actually see it.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Saw some uh pictures the other day on social media and it looks phenomenal.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: I wonder if they'll do like because I know they were originally going to do tours, so I wonder if you could do like, you know, I don't know, 10, you know, six people at a time tours to at least see the inside of Allegiant Stadium.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: That would be cool.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: It would be nice.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: That it could be a good consolation for the season ticket holders for sure.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would be.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Um, we did get some some bad news last week about one of our show.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Now I've got Kermit the Frog.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, is this thing happen around between us?
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: The hell's going on?
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: It's Friday, and you and I have had a lot of business phone calls.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: I think our voice is finally giving out.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Oh boy.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, I'm getting all choked up because one of our shows here in Las Vegas did announce it was closing, and we're talking closing for good.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Larette at the win.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Beautiful show inside a beautiful theater.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Uh it's just and it's got water and amazing singers and acrobats and dancers, and so much to it.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: It's been open for what, 15 years now?
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: 15 years, yeah.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Um, the whole casting crew found out that they are closing for good.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: And a lot of people are going, well, why?
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: It's upsetting.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And and you know, I guess it comes down to the cost.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, John Castle Medis of the Review Journal was saying that um it would cost the win about four million dollars just to relaunch La Rev with, you know, slow hotel and casino business, theater capacity cut to about one-third, social distancing protocols, all that.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: And the show just made a decision to, you know, close up.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: They just don't really see any hope for it, for a return anytime soon where it could actually be profitable to pay everyone.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's really sad news for the Las Vegas entertainment community and uh for all Las Vegas visitors who come to Las Vegas to see entertainment.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: And coming up next on Vegas Revealed, we're talking with one of the featured singers from La Rev, Andrew Ragone, joins us.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Stay with us on Vegas Revealed.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Vegas Revealed is sponsored by Vegas.pizza.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: We know going out to eat may not be for everyone right now, and that's where Vegas.pizza comes in.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: And it is so good.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: They have their own homemade dough and sauce.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: The recipe comes straight from an old neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: And if you've had New York pizza, you know it is the bomb.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Vegas.pizza is only available for delivery apps like Uber Eats, Postmates, and Grubhub, but it's easy and it's delicious.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: They've got the classic New Yorker, which who doesn't love just a classic pizza?
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Or you can try something called the Barstool Pizza.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: That looks delicious.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: You know, we can't sit at the bar, Sean, and share it, but we can still have pizza at home or at work.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, there's no better food group than pizza.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Vegas.pizza.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Find it on Uber Eats, Postmates, and Grubhub.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: This past week on the Las Vegas strip, we saw a lot of entertainers and crew members who are part of the Las Vegas entertainment industry uh take to the street and and pick it and let people know about the impact that this entire pandemic has had on their livelihoods and on the industry that Las Vegas has really come to be known for, Dana.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's been so hard on everyone.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: We do miss our shows and our entertainment.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And on this week's podcast, we have Andrew Rabone joining us, and we're super excited.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Andrew came here for Phantom of the Opera, but he's a longtime entertainer, performer, singer.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: He's been in many, many shows after that.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: And most recently in La Rev at The Win that we unfortunately heard is shutting down.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Andrew, how are you?
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Good to talk to you guys.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: It's great to have you with us.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: It's good to be here, you know.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Just trying to fill some time in all this downtime of we've had five months since our last show, which we didn't know was our last show.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: I always think about that when when we keep hearing about these shows closing and uh or not coming back to the property that they were at for a long time and things like that.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: You never get to have that finale.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And and that's hard.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: It's like it's almost like there's no closure, right?
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is funny.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Um, when this was all going down in like end of February, March, we were getting a lot of like updates at the casino from the the personal trainers that work on the show that are also doctors, and they were telling us a lot of different things about, you know, just you know, washing our hands and staying uh, you know, socially distant and all that.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: And then we noticed, you know, the crowds were starting to fall off the week before the whole thing kind of shut down.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: And for some reason, I remember the the Tuesday night right before of our would have been our last show, I think March 10th.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: I did watch that second show and I was like, I'm gonna watch this.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Who knows how soon this is gonna be back?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: We thought it was only gonna be a few weeks, maybe a month, maybe max.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: And I I did take in the show.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: It's funny because as a singer, one of the singers in the show, we're we're out kind of uh on the audience level, and I I stood in the back and kind of watched the the numbers, even the numbers I wasn't in.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Just for some reason, I just had this thing in the back of my head.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: I was like, but it is just weird for a cast.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I know the whole the cast of the show feels so funny about not uh getting to say goodbye, you know.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Um having been a part of two other shows in Vegas that were big production shows and a fan of the opera and showstoppers at The Win.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: I you do miss that.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Closing day is a special thing, even though you're sad.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: There's something that comes together, you know.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: You put so much work into a show, and it is great to send it off with in you know, in the best way possible.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Um, so it is a little, I think it's bittersweet, and I think people are having a hard time with it because of the fact that they didn't get to say goodbye to each other.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: You know, this this the crew on the show, the casting crew is like 275 people.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: So the chances that you saw everyone that night, you know, and said goodbye to them truly was, you know, it we never really got that kind of moment, you know.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: So it is a little odd.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Well, in and 275 people working on just that show alone, that kind of gives people uh kind of a different perspective when you look at that number and hear that number about what it really takes to stage a big production on the Las Vegas strip.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: And I mean, you know, if you can kind of go into more detail about you know all the behind the scenes people that we never get to see.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, and anyone that's seen the Rev knows uh that's that set is just massive.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Um and what comes with that is uh a ton of stage crew, uh stage management crew, all the divers that are below in the water, um, everyone that disappears under the water as the performers.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: There's a a diver and a breathing tube for any everyone that goes below the water.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: So you have to imagine all those people down there.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: We have uh, you know, as I said, like personal trainers that are there backstage for this, you know, these are athletes and artists, but they their bodies take a beating.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: So there's those people backstage that are helping them, all the coaches for the individual uh acts are that back there.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's wardrobe, uh, you know, it's just it's a huge amount of people that it people don't sometimes realize in these kind of search type shows that it is it is a massive family.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Um I came into the show just last year, and I it's funny because you're coming into a long-running show.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: We had already been 14 years, and I wasn't sure what to expect, you know.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Is it gonna be just super impersonal because of that that size of the p amount of people?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh it's so funny how everyone was super duper welcoming to me.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And and people that I wouldn't cross paths with much in a show because of the amount of people and maybe where the singers are, we're we kind of pop out in different places on the stage, but we're not always on in the water and all those things.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: But everyone made such an effort, and you could see and feel as someone that was coming in from the outside, the family feeling and how so many of these people had been there for years and years, many since the beginning, you know, and inception of the show.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure I mean I know the pain of like it closing, but I can't imagine, you know, the the ones that have had families and you know, gone through weddings and divorces and deaths, and you know, yeah, everyone, you know, and jobs that you have, everyone knows that.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: You become you it becomes a mini family.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: You sometimes spend more time with your work family than you do your own, you know.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, you think about you know, it's it's hard just to adjusting to what we're all going through right now, but then you throw that in the mix, and yeah, it's a huge sense of loss for everyone.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Listen, I did a behind the scenes um story, I don't know, about 10 years ago at La Rev, and I remember walking into that area where they were all working out, and I was like, I've never felt like I've had more body fat in my life.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Like everyone was so lean and they're like doing pull-ups like it was nothing, you know.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, they work hard, they work out.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: People don't realize too that I mean, um, the cast and crews working out during the day to get ready for the show at night.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: So it's not like they just show up and put on a show.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Those acts, you know, it takes an inhuman amount of strength to do some of the stuff that they they make it look easy, of course.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm being a singer and I was like, Oh, I felt like I was in shape.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And then I went there and I was like, oh, I feel, you know, way to make you feel inferior.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And they're always like, No, you can join our workouts, you know.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we'd have between shows, they'd be like, No, you're you're welcome to use the equipment.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I'm not gonna stand next to that person and try to do the same thing.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: No, you know, but yeah, they're they're even working out during the show.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: It's just that kind of a show where they had to they had to constantly be working on it, even with this, even with what was going on all these months, all those acts, they had to still there was like Zoom meetings about how to like keep those skills up because it's not like what as a singer, I can kind of go and I can practice on my own.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: And once you kind of know what you're doing, that's kind of like that's our responsibility to kind of just keep your voice in shape.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: And yeah, that's theirs too, but they can't they have to have the equipment and the you know and the training to do it.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's crazy.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: And there are there are a lot of things that that made La Rev a really special and unique show uh here in Las Vegas, and I mean really anywhere around the world.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: It's just a beautiful production, but uh live music and live vocals are one of the unique aspects that you don't always find here in Las Vegas, and so it was definitely going to be sad um not to have that.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: How did you all and when did you all find out that the show wasn't coming back?
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Just this last Friday, we we had a uh like a Zoom meeting with our our um our VP of entertainment who's Rick Gray, and he he uh we thought it was just gonna be, you know, I think most people thought it was just gonna be, you know, more of the same.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: He had been checking in, we'd had meetings here and there, like just checking in, seeing, telling people, you know, until the governor kind of opens us up or the situation's getting better.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And then once, you know, attendance was really lower in the midweeks for these casinos, you know, and you're finding out all the casinos are just besides the entertainment, they're just having their own struggles to uh figure out how to staff their hotels and all that stuff.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: So we were hearing all that stuff.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: We knew it wasn't in great, you know, in great shape and Vegas wasn't in great shape, but you know, we were hopeful that at least, even if it was going to be next year, we we were now, we were at that point in.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: By August, we were kind of hearing January the earliest, possibly in the spring, because it was seeming like all the conventions were taking a hit.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: And as anyone that's ever lived in Vegas knows, that that that business on a strip the weekends are great normally, you know, but midweek we depend on these giant conventions that Vegas has just been known for for the last 25-30 years.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: That it's the business model of how the how the towns run that you know you have to have these conventions to fill the rooms and the shows and all these, you know, there's so much entertainment that you have to have those people to fill it.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: So we understood.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I was thinking, okay, yeah, January would be tough if there's no conventions, you know, and then you heard CES had canceled and and all that stuff.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: So you're kind of going, okay, it's gonna be push back.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: And then the the thought I had always was that you know, so much of the cast is from other countries that we know they're under visas that are work visas.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: And I was thinking, are they gonna extend that while there's so many, you know, so many months until that would be possibly we'd be possibly back.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: So there was I I started a feeling in the beginning of August that uh there was gonna be a possible either we were gonna be fully, fully let go, and then they were just gonna reopen the show at a very later date to kind of do it, or you know, I didn't think necessarily they were gonna close it, close it.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: But as of Friday, we got the message that yes, the the they just kind of looked over what it would cost to reopen the show.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: The what they were seeing was like the conventions have been canceled, but most of the conventions have been canceled till May of next year.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Uh and I think keeping people on the on kind of like the you know, the bait of saying, oh, it's gonna open, it's gonna open.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Well, it's not gonna open anytime soon.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: And I think most of the production, even the Cirque shows that, you know, possibly could reopen, uh, that's gonna they're gonna face the same, you know, same kind of issues, you know, that there's just not people midweek.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: You can't run these big shows with two, you know, 200, 300 people working on them and have no one in these audiences, you know, um midweek, you know, and you can't just run it just Thursday, Friday, Saturday and say, we're gonna pay everyone, you know.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: It just so it was a tri it was a I it as sad as you are, you know, I think most people understand, and it doesn't mean you're less any less devastated, you know.
- 24:25unknown: Right.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: Well, and I think about, you know, um people like you, I mean, first of all, you were incredible in the Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian, you were in showstoppers and then La Rev, a big part of our community.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: We've seen you at a lot of different events, and we don't want to lose people like that.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: So what what do you do right now?
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And can you even, I guess if nothing's open, there's not really like you can, it's not like you can make a plan.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Are you just gonna have to see what's out there and it may be Las Vegas or it may be somewhere else?
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it might it's gonna have to be, it's gonna be a little bit dependent on what's, you know, right now, really for you know, people that are not in this industry that that they think that it's that, you know, I'm I'm sure a lot of them that know performers or whatever are used to them being in shows, finishing shows, being between shows.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: But anyone that's been around that's a performer, that's an uh performer of any sort of like career has has any longevity of a career, they've known how to like I've had concerts, I do things between.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: I have I always have my like fire, you know, hands in a bunch of different pots.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Now, what we do, all those things are canceled.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: I mean every last bit of them.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I'm gonna probably be teaching a little bit of voice, um, some probably some acting classes and stuff like that.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: Um, those are kind of coming up and stuff, but but I I have concerts that are scheduled with some of my uh castmates from uh Showstoppers.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: And uh some of those have been canceled, but still as of now, we still have some in March and April of next year that are still on the box books.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: I think if you know everything goes according to plan, those are gonna happen.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: But you know, right now I just you have to kind of roll with the punches and keep your foot forward and keep your, you know, try I'm trying to like, you know, you have to reinvent yourself like you know, everyone's doing, you know.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: Every business I think is kind of having to pivot a lot at some sort of way to kind of deal with this.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: But I I really feel bad for a lot of the performers, the crew in this town.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: People don't realize a lot of the crew is also on conventions.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: So, you know, that takes a huge amount of people.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's a tough time for Vegas, you know.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: And I I I'm I'm hopeful and I know Vegas is pretty smart about how to bounce bounce back, but it's gonna take a little bit longer for entertainment, I think, than I think for most other forms of I think I think people will rush back to Vegas.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: They're gonna, they're gonna wanna once this is done and we're you know, we have a found a vaccine or some sort of way of dealing with it if you get it.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: I think people are gonna be like, okay, I'm ready to like, you know, brave the crowds and kind of feel like I can let loose a little bit.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: And we know that will happen, but but yeah, for the entertainment, I think it's gonna take a little bit longer.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: So I think uh all of us are having to be a little bit, you know, kind of keep, you know, change a little bit.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I hope I'm hopeful people will just, you know, stay with it.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Things will happen, new things will happen, you know.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I know there's definitely pent-up demand.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: I know Dana and I have talked on many occasions and just how badly we want to be back inside of a packed bar.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: So it's like that that craving to be around people is still there.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Or just you know, sit back with a glass of wine and watch a great show or something.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just yeah, it's missed.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: And and I know that a lot of our followers on social media are always asking, when do the shows open back up?
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And we're like, there is no answer, and nobody knows, you know, and we're not allowed to have ticketed events right now, so it's not like some shows can open and others can't.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Right now, everyone is literally in the same boat.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Everyone's in the same boat, you know.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: And so not to make light of the situation or anything, but have you picked up any new hobbies since everything's been shut down?
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, I've been helping friends on construction, home repairs, weird stuff that I was never interested or had any passion to do, but then was like, okay, I cannot watch any more Netflix.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I've I've tapped out.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, I can watch it at night, but I'm like, I can't spend all day those that March and April.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: And by May, I was like, okay, I need something to do, you know.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: And so I've been doing that.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Um is there like a YouTube channel now where we can watch Andrew spackle a wall?
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: While he's singing, maybe you could sing some phantom while you're like doing the wall.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there we go.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: No one no one needs to see those those janky repairs.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Well, listen, Andrew, we hope you stay in Vegas.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: We love having you here.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: You've you've been a part of really just the show world and entertaining the world because everyone comes here from all over the world for so many years.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: We hope to see you in something again soon.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Probably will be 2021, but uh, we'll be here for it.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: We'll have the popcorn ready.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: I'm anxious to be back and see you guys both live in person.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Hopefully in a packed bar or in a packed showroom with entertainment in front of us.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Andrew, thank you so much.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: We appreciate it.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Thank you guys.

- 30:46SPEAKER_00: All right, welcome back.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: It's time for Dana Sean's tips.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: And Sean, yesterday I went to the forum shops at Caesars Palace.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: And what a fun outing that is.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I, you know, and I was thinking, I feel like a lot of people might not realize that it's open.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: So I thought, hey, tip time, you know, it is open.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: And there were people there, they were shopping, but you know, not every single store was open.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: So there were most stores that were open.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you, Sean, it was not busy.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: So there's a bonus if you don't want the crowds, you know, it's sad to see.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: However, when talking to a lot of the store owners, we're in like um Polo Ralph Loren and stuff, they were saying, you know, it's not that busy during the week, but it does get, you know, busy on the weekend, which is the good thing.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: And that's when you know more people are coming to Vegas now.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: It seems like obviously the weekends are busier.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: We don't have that convention business during the week.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Well, and it's, you know, whether people are looking to shop or whether people are ducking their heads inside to try and get some air conditioning and people are still going in.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you gotta wear your mask in there.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: It was good to get out and walk around, and it's cool in there.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: They've got the sky above you, and you know, it's a pretty, pretty place.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: It's cool, like you said, and it's something different.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Even if you just want to go to the restaurants, are the restaurants open?
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I ate I ate at True Food Kitchen in there, which opened a short time before the pandemic.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Actually, you and I had gone to one of the media openings and it was delicious.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And I was glad to see that it's still open.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Now, it was not busy at the time, but I had been there once before um a few weeks ago, and the food is great, it's healthy, it's flavorful, and that is uh sad to see that it wasn't busy, but the staff is so nice in there and they get so excited when they get a table.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: So if anyone can go support them, um great people over there, great food.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: But no, the restaurants were open, and what I did notice was the busy ones were like uh Joe's crab.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, Joe Stone Crab.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Joe's Stone Crab.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Now that that was really busy because you could see the the patio, you know, it's an indoor patio that they have in the front was was full.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: So was the restaurant Trevi right near the fountain there in the center.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was full.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: You know, it was socially distanced, but as full as it could be.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: So I was thinking, you know, why are those places busy and some of the others um aren't?
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: And I was thinking, well, if you're in Vegas and you're on a type of vacation, maybe you're doing a little bit of gambling, hitting the pool.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: You know, you the other really only other thing to do is look forward to is to go out to a nice dinner.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: So it seemed like the places that were kind of, you know, have a meal, have some drinks, sit down with your family or friends, those places seem to be bustling, which was really good to see.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but TrueFood is that's a great spot.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: And I know, Dana, you'd uh told me that you'd notice that they have TVs in there, and as the NHL playoffs, the Stanley Cup playoffs continue, um, they'll likely have the games on uh at True Food Kitchen and at True Food Bar over there.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: So could be a good spot to catch some sports when you're out on the strip.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: Get out a little bit.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: So, and everyone was wearing a mask, you know, unless they were sitting down and eating or or drinking.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: So, so that was good to see as well.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: And it has to happen, it's a rule.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: So um we wanted to talk about something else we've been doing this week.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, you look on LinkedIn, you talk to your friends, you flip on the news, you know that a a lot of people are are looking for jobs right now.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: And uh one of the, I guess adapting to the new way that things are, a lot of job interviews are being done on Zoom, on Zoom or Skype or Google Meets.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: It's a video conference kind of thing.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: And we just wanted to mention uh Dana and I have uh a media training uh aspect to our company, Insightful Media.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: And you know, if you are looking to brush up on interview skills and get ready and be prepared for a big interview that you may have coming up, we can help.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, a lot of the big executives are are also doing, you know, interviews for television programs.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: And you and I, we always scroll through and we go, oh, he needs better lighting on him, or oh, that shot's off.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: But there are little things that you can do with your computer setup to really have a nice, a nice, a nice shot, and it makes such a difference.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, a lot of times people aren't used to doing these interviews by just staring at a camera with no one else in the room.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: And we've been helping a couple clients recently.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: They've been really happy with the results, and we just wanted people to know that we do this.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Sean and I have been in broadcasting well combined, you know, way well over 30 years, and we have a lot to share and we want to work with you.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: And we can also do it virtually, it doesn't have to be in Las Vegas.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we can we can do these sessions on Zoom, and I think it's gonna it would make a big difference for a lot of people out there that are a little bit uncomfortable with this kind of new way.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you can go to, we have a website, it's insightfulmediaco.com.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: Insightfulmediaco.com.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: So hit us up.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Let us know if you uh are interested.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: And if you think that you listen to our podcast and these guys are awful, then don't hire us, and that's fine.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: But we guarantee we'll have fun.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: That's right, that's right.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: All right, another Vegas revealed podcast in the books.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: I can't believe we're at episode 31 already.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: We'll see you back next week for number 32.
