- 0:00Speaker 1: Did your doctor prescribe that, young man? It's one more thing.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Armstrong and Getty. One more thing. Before we get to that, I.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Will be attending my Latin Mass that I've been going
- 0:15Speaker 2: to once or twice a week for a couple of
- 0:19Speaker 2: weeks now. So you sent me the email from some
- 0:21Speaker 2: guy who emailed the show. I don't remember talking about this,
- 0:26Speaker 2: but I must have.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 0:28Speaker 2: He discovered a church in the Sacramento area that still
- 0:32Speaker 2: does the Latin Mass, which most Catholic churches got rid
- 0:36Speaker 2: of in 65 after Vatican II. But he loves it
- 0:41Speaker 2: so much.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Vatican II, electric boogaloo. Right.
- 0:45Speaker 2: He and his family love it so much, he actually
- 0:46Speaker 2: moved so he could be closer to that church. But anyway,
- 0:49Speaker 2: I've gone several times.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Wow. And I'm going to go today at noon probably.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And I have no idea why I enjoy it because
- 0:56Speaker 2: I do not understand Latin at all. I have no
- 0:58Speaker 2: idea what they're saying. There's just something very calming and
- 1:01Speaker 2: enjoyable about it. And it's places packed. I don't know
- 1:04Speaker 2: if the other people understand Latin or not.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You should ask. Hey, do any of you know what
- 1:09Speaker 1: he's saying? Anybody have any idea what he's saying? The
- 1:12Speaker 1: old people probably do because they grew up with the
- 1:14Speaker 1: Latin mass. Right, right. But the younger crowd certainly can't.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I don't think. Well, Jesus says, Jesus himself said, caveat emptor. Right,
- 1:23Speaker 1: pluribus unum. That's what he said. Wow, how interesting.
- 1:28Speaker 2: It is interesting, and I don't know why, what I
- 1:31Speaker 2: get out of it. But I get something out of it,
- 1:32Speaker 2: and who cares?
- 1:33Speaker 1: You know, I don't spend nearly as much time searching
- 1:36Speaker 1: for truth and meaning as you do. I spend most
- 1:39Speaker 1: of my day every day doing that. Does that make
- 1:42Speaker 1: me an idiot? Or at peace? Probably at peace is
- 1:45Speaker 1: what it makes you. Maybe I've been black pilled, which
- 1:51Speaker 1: brings me to the topic of the day. I read
- 1:55Speaker 1: for the umpteenth time as I was going through some
- 1:58Speaker 1: Twitter feed that I found interesting, some comment that, well,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you've just been red pilled or green pilled or whatever
- 2:04Speaker 1: the hell. And I realized, I don't know what all
- 2:06Speaker 1: these frigging pills are. I know, I know. And I
- 2:08Speaker 1: don't care, really. Okay, I get that it's shorthand. But
- 2:14Speaker 1: everybody's so into being clever and snarky and like, boffo, gotcha. Online,
- 2:21Speaker 1: people don't learn to form arguments anymore. Oh, boy. Okay,
- 2:24Speaker 1: hang on.
- 2:25Speaker 2: That's the second time you guys have said boffo, and
- 2:28Speaker 2: I don't know what boffo is.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Boffo is it means itself. Oh, okay. Thanks for clearing
- 2:38Speaker 1: that up. Oh, my God. You've been white-pilled. Uh, yeah, it's, no,
- 2:44Speaker 1: boffo means, that is old-timey show business verbiage for, like,
- 2:50Speaker 1: really great. Oh, okay. We got a boffo show for
- 2:54Speaker 1: you today, ladies and germs. Yeah, you've said that a
- 2:56Speaker 1: few times, and I'm like, what the hell are they
- 2:59Speaker 1: talking about? It's so quaint and old-timey. Yes, absolutely true. So, anyway,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I asked ChatGPT, all right, what are the meanings of
- 3:06Speaker 1: the various pills people refer to online? You've been black-pilled, red-pilled, white-pilled, etc.,
- 3:11Speaker 1: The various colored pills are part of an increasingly elaborate...
- 3:14Speaker 1: I think I got brown-pilled the other night, I'll tell
- 3:16Speaker 1: you that. What? They're part of an increasingly elaborate vocabulary
- 3:20Speaker 1: of internet culture, particularly in political discussions, online subcultures, and
- 3:24Speaker 1: debates about society. The terminology, I knew this part, originated
- 3:28Speaker 1: from the 1999 film The Matrix. which is worth re-watching. Mind-blowing.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I've never seen The Matrix. Oh my gosh.
- 3:37Speaker 2: That's not one of those, because I've never had ranch dressing,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I've never been to Taco Bell. I plan to hold
- 3:41Speaker 2: those for the rest of my life.
- 3:43Speaker 1: You've never had ranch dressing? I know you've been on
- 3:46Speaker 1: a ranch. I was with you. There was very little
- 3:49Speaker 1: dressing about. Not enough, apparently.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I do want to see The Matrix just because, I
- 3:54Speaker 2: was telling my son about this, I said, we've got
- 3:56Speaker 2: to watch it just because there's references to it all
- 3:58Speaker 2: the time. It's one of those things that I need
- 4:01Speaker 2: to be aware of to be involved in conversations.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Which is a powerful argument why kids should learn about
- 4:07Speaker 1: the Bible.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You know why I haven't seen it? Because of Bill
- 4:09Speaker 2: and Ted's Excellent Adventure. That's why I haven't seen it.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think Kenu Reeves comes off as an idiot.
- 4:15Speaker 1: What? Who? Not since the first moment he walked on
- 4:18Speaker 1: screen has Jack been able to say his first name.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I cannot say his name. Keanu. What?
- 4:24Speaker 2: Keanu.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm not going to try because it makes my tongue hurt.
- 4:27Speaker 1: All right. So the terminology originated with the 1999 film
- 4:33Speaker 1: The Matrix in which Morpheus offers Neo, that would be
- 4:36Speaker 1: Keanu Reeves, a choice between two pills. A red pill,
- 4:40Speaker 1: you will discover the truth about reality, however uncomfortable that
- 4:44Speaker 1: might be. Downright painful and miserably uncomfortable. Would you want
- 4:49Speaker 1: to take that or not? Or would you take the
- 4:51Speaker 1: blue pill, remain comfortably ignorant of the truth?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I think, first blush, I think I'm going blue, but
- 5:01Speaker 1: I don't know. Well, enjoy your stay in the Matrix, then.
- 5:06Speaker 2: But what if you're happy the whole time? See, that's
- 5:08Speaker 2: the problem with a lot of this stuff. What if
- 5:09Speaker 2: you're happy the whole time? I do not subscribe to
- 5:13Speaker 2: I'd rather be right than happy.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I want to be happy. But you're seeking truth, right?
- 5:20Speaker 1: Aren't you a truth seeker? To try to be happier, yes. Well,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I think that's going to make me happy. No, no.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Comfortably ignorant isn't true happiness.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It's anesthesia. I've been ignorant, but not comfortably ignorant. Why
- 5:33Speaker 2: am I yelling at him? I'm uncomfortably ignorant. That's why
- 5:37Speaker 2: I'm in that unique position.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You want to be that. So over time, Internet communities
- 5:43Speaker 1: have developed additional colors to describe different philosophical, political and
- 5:46Speaker 1: psychological outlooks. Well, you know, we could talk all day
- 5:50Speaker 1: about the red pill, blue pill thing. Obviously, that's one
- 5:52Speaker 1: of the fundamental questions that's confronted mankind since we crawled
- 5:56Speaker 1: out of the primordial ooze.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And I'm guessing Kanye Reeves takes the blue pill and
- 6:01Speaker 2: then all hell breaks loose?
- 6:02Speaker 1: No, he takes the red pill. I mean, the red pill? Right, right, right, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 6:06Speaker 1: In fact, he understands the truth does he regret it
- 6:10Speaker 1: or is he happy that he did that oh he's
- 6:12Speaker 1: he's happy as can be and he and toto end
- 6:14Speaker 1: up back in kansas.
- 6:15Speaker 2: My favorite line from bill and ted's excellent adventure which
- 6:18Speaker 2: i use regularly because i've got one near my house
- 6:20Speaker 2: there's something strange.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Afoot at the circle k you know what line I
- 6:29Speaker 1: reference a lot and it's old timey but classic rock
- 6:32Speaker 1: is so big and I'm always surprised I don't think
- 6:35Speaker 1: I've ever gotten the glint of recognition is you know
- 6:39Speaker 1: people say how you doing and I say I can't
- 6:41Speaker 1: complain but sometimes I still do and everybody's like oh
- 6:46Speaker 1: anyway they don't recognize the line from the Joe Walsh
- 6:49Speaker 1: song come on life's been good that's one of the
- 6:51Speaker 1: great songs of rock and popular music history yeah well
- 6:57Speaker 1: too obscure I guess Anyway, so we've added more pills.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I suppose I ought to go on the record. I'm
- 7:06Speaker 1: a red pill guy. Because I don't want to be
- 7:12Speaker 1: comfortably ignorant.
- 7:15Speaker 2: But now when people talk red pill, blue pill, they
- 7:17Speaker 2: mean politics, right? You've been red pill, you're swallowing the
- 7:20Speaker 2: whole conservative agenda or isn't that what people know?
- 7:23Speaker 1: No, they mean you haven't been awakened to the truth.
- 7:26Speaker 1: You're still in an anesthetized daze.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Because I've not seen The Matrix, I didn't understand what
- 7:30Speaker 2: people have been saying all these years about the pill colors.
- 7:34Speaker 1: That's why I'm here. After those nachos, I'm telling you.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I might miss my blue pill days. I was brown pilled. Huh? Oh,
- 7:42Speaker 1: that's just... Nobody wanted that the first time. Nobody needed it.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Nobody appreciated it. Not a soul. What's the opposite of
- 7:49Speaker 1: casting pearls before swine? I don't know. Nobody wants that.
- 7:54Speaker 1: All right. Here are your major pills online. Red pill. Well,
- 8:00Speaker 1: we went over the red pill and blue pill. But
- 8:04Speaker 1: more specifically, red pill awakening to a supposedly hidden or
- 8:08Speaker 1: uncomfortable truth. He's been red-pilled means someone has abandoned conventional
- 8:11Speaker 1: beliefs and adopted what the speaker considers a more realistic
- 8:14Speaker 1: understanding of the world. I would love to feed mountains
- 8:19Speaker 1: of red pills to people who believe in socialism, for instance.
- 8:22Speaker 1: The color chosen is ironic, given red, this, that, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: the other. Blue pill, accepting conventional wisdom or remaining unaware
- 8:29Speaker 1: of uncomfortable realities. He's blue-pilled suggests someone unquestionably accepts mainstream narratives.
- 8:37Speaker 1: The black pill... Tastes like licorice. Anise, if you will. Yeah. Fatalism, pessimism,
- 8:49Speaker 1: or the belief that a situation is hopeless and cannot
- 8:51Speaker 1: meaningfully be changed. I've been blackpilled about politics means someone
- 8:54Speaker 1: believes the political system is irredeemably broken, so why try?
- 8:58Speaker 1: If we had a girl, we were going to name
- 9:00Speaker 1: her Anise. Oh, boy. I'm glad you didn't. Oh, boy. Wow, wow, wow.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The purple pill is a compromise between red pill and
- 9:08Speaker 1: blue pill perspectives, often describes someone who accepts elements of
- 9:12Speaker 1: competing worldviews without fully embracing either. Okay. All right. Take
- 9:17Speaker 1: what your doctor prescribes you. And finally, the green pill,
- 9:20Speaker 1: most commonly associated with environmentalism, ecological awareness, or sustainability, although
- 9:25Speaker 1: meanings vary. Getting green-pilled can mean adopting a more environmentally
- 9:29Speaker 1: conscious worldview. Oh, shut up.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Not to get too deep, but like the seeking the truth,
- 9:35Speaker 2: I don't know if that's what people are going to
- 9:36Speaker 2: church for. I think you're trying to become blue-pilled, but
- 9:39Speaker 2: you become blue-pilled by letting go of a lot of
- 9:43Speaker 2: the red-pill crap, I think, is what happens there.
- 9:46Speaker 1: That's the old switcheroo. I would disagree, but I think
- 9:51Speaker 1: we're talking past each other because I think, you know, Jesus...
- 9:59Speaker 1: the whole thing was this is the truth. This is
- 10:03Speaker 1: what matters. So that's absolutely red-pilled. You are blue-pilled by
- 10:10Speaker 1: booze and sex and money and the rest of it.
- 10:13Speaker 1: You're anesthetized to the truth. All the fun stuff. I
- 10:17Speaker 1: am the way, the truth, and the life.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Right, but you got to make all the ugliness of
- 10:24Speaker 2: life fit into your situation so that you end up
- 10:27Speaker 2: on basically the blue side, which is I'm perfectly comfortable with.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You're not a misinterpreter. You're not ignorant. That doesn't fit in. Yeah,
- 10:37Speaker 1: Buddha would be on my side too, which is really
- 10:40Speaker 1: a pretentious thing to say in that enlightenment doesn't come
- 10:44Speaker 1: from You know, peace comes through enlightenment. Buddha and I
- 10:47Speaker 1: would fist bump. Me and Buddha are homies on this.
- 10:51Speaker 1: You feel me, Buddha? Hell yeah. Fist bump. Yeah. But
- 10:56Speaker 1: the way to get to enlightenment is to recognize the truth.
- 10:59Speaker 1: And you're content with the truth. The blue pill is
- 11:02Speaker 1: not contentment. It's anesthesia.
- 11:06Speaker 2: My concern, if I was in the Matrix movie, would
- 11:09Speaker 2: be that all the stuff you just said, we're not
- 11:13Speaker 2: even close to the truth. The truth is going to
- 11:16Speaker 2: blow your mind, man. And then you take the red
- 11:18Speaker 2: pill and you're like, holy crap! This is all, what
- 11:22Speaker 2: is that term that computer geeks talk about?
- 11:24Speaker 1: The Matrix? It's a, oh, I know what you're talking about. Simulation. Right, yeah. Well,
- 11:32Speaker 1: that's essentially the movie. Oh, it is? Yes.
- 11:35Speaker 2: One of the reasons I haven't seen The Matrix is
- 11:36Speaker 2: I don't think I'm smart enough to understand it.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you are. Just watch it.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So I thought, yeah, I'd be lost, and then I'd
- 11:43Speaker 2: have to pretend I know what it's all about the
- 11:45Speaker 2: rest of my life, where it's much easier to just
- 11:46Speaker 2: say I've never seen it.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Well, it's not Proust. It's a popular movie, so I'll
- 11:50Speaker 1: bet you'll get it. Yeah. Yeah. It's got Canoe Reeves
- 11:54Speaker 1: in it. I think Proust would agree with me, too. Him, Jesus,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and Buddha. Something strange afoot at the Circle K. A classic.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Really fast before we quit, can we revisit the ranch
- 12:06Speaker 2: dressing thing?
- 12:06Speaker 1: You've never had ranch dressing? No. It looks gross. What? What?
- 12:12Speaker 1: You know what it's best on? Pizza crust. Oh, yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 2: My son demands we have ranch dressing for his pizza crust.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Just try it. Jack, you remember you mentioned Salina, Kansas before.
- 12:25Speaker 1: You remember Scheme Pizza? Oh, yeah. They give you for
- 12:28Speaker 1: your pizza crust? Yeah. Honey. Yeah, that was pretty great. Oh.
- 12:32Speaker 1: That's not good. I need that right now. Oh, Lord.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Now that's the truth.
- 12:42Speaker 2: A little known Jack Armstrong fact, he will only move
- 12:45Speaker 2: to a home within a mile of a Circle K
- 12:47Speaker 2: just so he can use that.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Bill and Ted Excellent Venture line. I like it so much. Well,
- 12:52Speaker 1: I guess that's it.
