- 0:00[ on-hold music] Welcome back to The Most Important Question Today, where in just a couple minutes or less, we apply the Actually Pro-Life Principles to a news headline and then help you answer the most important question, "What can I do?"
- 0:18[on-hold music] If you're an ancient millennial like I am, you were born and immediately understood two things. One, jock jams.
- 0:34Two, what pro-life means. Now, you know what it's supposed to mean. So does everybody. That's the whole trick, right? So let's talk again about E.J. Hirsch's manifesto on the dangers of political hobbies.
- 0:47He said, "Voters should cast ballots for the party that took care of them, not the party or the candidate with some grand vision of the common good."
- 0:55What he's describing is the old city machines of the twentieth century, which in his words, had loyal followings when they saw their function as taking care of people's basic needs.
- 1:05Yes, those machines were super-duper corrupt. Of course. Read a history book. But people were loyal to them for a reason, and the reason was that somebody showed up in their actual day-to-day life over and over.
- 1:20This week, Abdul El-Sayed told a voter who called himself pro-life that the most pro-life thing that this country could do is just cover everybody's healthcare. Millions of people watched that clip.
- 1:32In February twenty twenty-five, I wrote something similar.
- 1:34I said, "Show me one thing you did this week to measurably extend the health span of someone with fewer resources than you, including and especially a child, and I'll call you pro-life."
- 1:46Because that's really the whole test. It's not what you're against or what your God will judge you for later, maybe. It's about who you took care of here and now with what you got.
- 1:58So here's a place to start tonight because politics is for power, and power is derived, as Hirsch put it, by serving others and showing them that you give a shit about them.
- 2:08If you or anyone you love has a hospital bill you can't pay, nonprofit hospitals are required by law to offer programs that forgive those bills. Dollar For will check whether you qualify for free. There you go.
- 2:19There's also a bill that would make all of it unnecessary, like Abdul was talking about. It's the Medicare For All Act. It got more than a hundred and fifty co-sponsors so far.
- 2:27It's been referred to seven committees, not a single vote. That is on whatcanido.earth. You can call your reps about it. Please take care of somebody. Show them that you care.
- 2:36Show them that you're listening, and then they'll take care of you, too. [on-hold music] Thanks for listening.
- 2:48Subscribe for more of these and for my longer conversations with incredible humans who've already asked and answered the most important question for themselves.
