Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right. Back to hearing from Longward's head coach Steve
- 0:03Speaker 1: Sarkis and in Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham. Sark
- 0:07Speaker 1: was asked for an injury update on Cameron Williams and
- 0:11Speaker 1: also to a review of the play of Trevor Gooseby
- 0:15Speaker 1: who had to go in for Cam Williams who was
- 0:17Speaker 1: injured late in the first half, and did say on
- 0:19Speaker 1: the post game with us, and I think he said
- 0:22Speaker 1: in the news conference as well that both in the
- 0:24Speaker 1: case of both both Cam Williams and also Jake Majors,
- 0:32Speaker 1: they could have gone back in had they really been
- 0:37Speaker 1: needed to go back in, but they decided to hold
- 0:40Speaker 1: him out as a precaution. So that's how that was.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So here's the follow up when asked about the condition
- 0:46Speaker 1: to Cam Williams and the play of Trevor Gooseby who
- 0:48Speaker 1: went into play for him.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So Cam, again not as serious as we thought. Again,
- 0:52Speaker 2: that was more of a precautionary MRI, so we feel
- 0:55Speaker 2: comfortable about that. I thought Trevor did a really nice job.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I highlighted him this morning.
- 0:59Speaker 1: With the team.
- 1:00Speaker 2: You know they had, they had an elite defensive end,
- 1:03Speaker 2: first round draft pick, defensive end. I thought he held
- 1:06Speaker 2: his own more than held his own. And for a
- 1:08Speaker 2: guy to think, you know, he's been a backup all
- 1:10Speaker 2: year and against A and M you know, seven plays
- 1:12Speaker 2: in he goes and plays left tackle, and that game
- 1:14Speaker 2: plays left tackle against Georgia, and then he thinks, Okay,
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'm back as a backup. And then you know, in
- 1:21Speaker 2: this ball game, in the second quarter, he gets thrown
- 1:24Speaker 2: in at right tackle against a pretty good pass rusher,
- 1:26Speaker 2: couped pretty good defensive ends from Clemson. So he's been
- 1:29Speaker 2: kind of thrown to the fire here pretty good. And
- 1:32Speaker 2: I got to give him a lot of credit. He's
- 1:34Speaker 2: held his own. He's shown not only the physical fortitude,
- 1:37Speaker 2: but I think the mental fortitude, the mental toughness when
- 1:39Speaker 2: you've been you know, he's been going against some pretty
- 1:42Speaker 2: elite players. So I've been proud of him.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Now, remember both of these head coaches participated in this
- 1:46Speaker 1: zoom simultaneously, so it alternated back and forth. Questions for Sark,
- 1:52Speaker 1: question for Dillingham, Arizona State, the media, the media covering
- 1:56Speaker 1: Arizona State, media covering Texas. So that's why was the
- 2:00Speaker 1: bouncing back and forth on these questions. So the next
- 2:02Speaker 1: one for Dillingham dealt with balancing the transfer portal while
- 2:09Speaker 1: continuing to play football and going to that even though
- 2:12Speaker 1: they won the Big Twelve so they had an open
- 2:14Speaker 1: date last week and didn't have to play, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 1: in the in the first round of the college football playoffs.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So Dillingham was asked about the whole balancing act.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's absolute chaos.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Anybody who says it's not chaos is lying to you.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:28Speaker 3: This this, this the world we live in right now
- 2:30Speaker 3: is chaos. But you're either going to embrace it and uh,
- 2:35Speaker 3: you know, respond to what's pitched to you, or you're
- 2:38Speaker 3: not and nobody's gonna care. Nobody cares what happens to you.
- 2:42Speaker 3: They care their response to their to what happens. And
- 2:45Speaker 3: I think, uh, you know, we're over here. I mean,
- 2:48Speaker 3: I couldn't imagine playing a game last week with what
- 2:51Speaker 3: we were doing.
- 2:52Speaker 2: We had it easy.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I really couldn't imagine what coach Tarkisian had to go
- 2:55Speaker 3: through last week with the portal and opening while also
- 2:58Speaker 3: preparing for aganic football game and buff for us. It's
- 3:03Speaker 3: been a great challenge balancing it all, and I have
- 3:07Speaker 3: no clue for doing it right, you know, we'll find
- 3:09Speaker 3: out here in about six months and a year if
- 3:12Speaker 3: if we did it right. We'll find out in ten
- 3:14Speaker 3: days if we managed this three and a half week
- 3:17Speaker 3: break right. And regardless if it's good or bad, we'll
- 3:21Speaker 3: learn from it.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We'll grow, we'll get better and respond.
- 3:24Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Sark then asked if there's something he has observed in
- 3:29Speaker 1: specific about Kenny Dillingham's career and what he's been able
- 3:34Speaker 1: to accomplish.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I think from from Kenny's perspective, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: he's obviously a very bright football coach, and he's been
- 3:42Speaker 2: around other really good football coaches. And I've been fortunate
- 3:46Speaker 2: that same way as well in my career as I
- 3:48Speaker 2: grew up, you know, playing for Norm Chow and then
- 3:52Speaker 2: you know, starting my career at SE with him being
- 3:54Speaker 2: the coordinator, and then going to work for a North
- 3:57Speaker 2: Turner and still all the while being around a peak
- 3:59Speaker 2: care and then later in my career getting around coach
- 4:03Speaker 2: Save And I think I think coach Dillingham's same thing.
- 4:05Speaker 2: He's been around some really good coaches, but you can
- 4:08Speaker 2: see his you know, how innovative he's been. You know,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I've you know, whether he doesn't know it or not.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I've watched his stuff a lot too, and not only
- 4:16Speaker 2: when he was been a coordinator from an offensive perspective,
- 4:19Speaker 2: but really as a head coach. And you know, people
- 4:23Speaker 2: don't know this that they Washington probably should have lost
- 4:26Speaker 2: to Arizona State a year ago, and we watched that
- 4:28Speaker 2: game very closely because of playing Washington the playoff and
- 4:31Speaker 2: the way he attacked them not only on offense but
- 4:34Speaker 2: on defense on special teams. That was the head coach
- 4:36Speaker 2: that was trying to win the game. And so I
- 4:38Speaker 2: have a lot of respect for him in that approach.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You know, this isn't a lot of guys put on
- 4:43Speaker 2: a head coaching hat and then they go find that
- 4:45Speaker 2: head coaching manual and they say and they just kind
- 4:47Speaker 2: of cookie cutter it because that's how we're supposed to
- 4:50Speaker 2: do it. And I give him a lot of credit
- 4:52Speaker 2: and I have a lot of respect for him because he
- 4:55Speaker 2: does what he thinks is the best thing to do,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and sometimes that's not always what what the manual says
- 5:01Speaker 2: to do. And in this day and age of college football,
- 5:04Speaker 2: we all have to continually evolve, and I think he's
- 5:08Speaker 2: blazing a trail for some older coaches to look at
- 5:13Speaker 2: to say, hey, maybe there is a better way. We
- 5:14Speaker 2: don't have to always do it the way we've always
- 5:16Speaker 2: done it before. And I think we've all got to
- 5:18Speaker 2: think that way. This is a new era. There's a
- 5:20Speaker 2: lot of change going on and so we've all got
- 5:22Speaker 2: to think outside the box a little bit. And I
- 5:24Speaker 2: credit him for doing that. They've done a nice job,
- 5:26Speaker 2: all right.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Sark and also from Kenny Dillingham
- 5:30Speaker 1: coming up. We'll come back to wrap up our number
- 5:33Speaker 1: two here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
