- 0:01Speaker 1: Hanging out with a lady who I can't imagine fancies
- 0:04Speaker 1: Broadway on the regular, missus Ashley McBride.
- 0:07Speaker 2: How just call me a lady?
- 0:09Speaker 3: I did.
- 0:10Speaker 2: That's so nice.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Well I figured random bitch wasn't very nice.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yeah, because I'm not super random anymore.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Well know, very well known bitch.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Welcome back to our studio here at Jason Neldean's. Thanks
- 0:22Speaker 1: for making the time. I want to start with your
- 0:27Speaker 1: footprint on Broadway, the collab with Eric Church. And it's
- 0:31Speaker 1: funny because somebody was like, oh, like that's I wonder
- 0:34Speaker 1: how that fit?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Like how does that?
- 0:37Speaker 1: I mean things like that usually fall together right, like
- 0:39Speaker 1: it just makes sense?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Uh?
- 0:41Speaker 1: The Redemption bars inside Eric Church's bar chiefs. Yes, how
- 0:45Speaker 1: did that come to be?
- 0:46Speaker 3: And at what point? Like was it official?
- 0:50Speaker 2: The question was posed to me kind of lightly, what
- 0:54Speaker 2: do you think about having a bar on Broadway? And
- 0:56Speaker 2: I was like, I don't drink anymore, I would want
- 0:59Speaker 2: a bar, and they were like, no, that's what we're
- 1:01Speaker 2: actually wanting to talk to you about, so you do
- 1:03Speaker 2: want to talk about it. Yeah, So as soon as
- 1:05Speaker 2: we sat down with the teams and spoke about it,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and I said, well I would want it. I would
- 1:10Speaker 2: want it to reflect many things, but most importantly I
- 1:13Speaker 2: want it to be sort of like the bars that
- 1:17Speaker 2: I played in when it was just me and a guitar.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I want us to have a stage where we can
- 1:20Speaker 2: experience that on Broadway because of all of the different
- 1:23Speaker 2: styles of playing in honky talking and full banding and
- 1:28Speaker 2: all of the things. That's one of the things we
- 1:29Speaker 2: should be able. If I was a tourist and came
- 1:31Speaker 2: to town for one day, the only place I get
- 1:34Speaker 2: to go is Broadway. I deserve to be able to
- 1:36Speaker 2: go upstairs and hear a kid who just got off
- 1:38Speaker 2: the bus two weeks ago.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I love that. I love that.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Why did that collab make sense? Because obviously, I mean
- 1:45Speaker 1: there's people collabbing up and down, especially once you get
- 1:48Speaker 1: down to the other end. How close are you with Eric?
- 1:52Speaker 1: How did that play into this being the right.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Move for you?
- 1:56Speaker 2: After this opportunity presented itself, I started really going back
- 2:02Speaker 2: and looking at this thread of all of the times
- 2:05Speaker 2: Eric has popped into my life into my career. So
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'm about to sign a record deal way back in
- 2:11Speaker 2: the day, and Eric pops into my life and says,
- 2:14Speaker 2: would you like to come to a show. Of course,
- 2:16Speaker 2: I go to the show. That's the night I ended
- 2:19Speaker 2: up being asked to go play with him on stage
- 2:21Speaker 2: in Chicago. It's my first time to use in air monitors,
- 2:24Speaker 2: it's my first time to play in an arena. I
- 2:26Speaker 2: was literally wearing his merch, so he put his stamp
- 2:31Speaker 2: of approval there. Then there were It was shortly after
- 2:37Speaker 2: we lost so many at the Route ninety one thing,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and we were being asked to perform at the Opry,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and I felt better knowing that Eric was there. And
- 2:49Speaker 2: let me see, there's so many others where Eric pops
- 2:52Speaker 2: in and he finds a way to put his mark
- 2:55Speaker 2: on my career throughout. In fact, we just toured. We
- 2:58Speaker 2: just got through touring with him on this line one
- 3:01Speaker 2: and for him to get the last not of the tour,
- 3:04Speaker 2: he said, why don't you come on stage tonight and
- 3:06Speaker 2: let's do Bible in a forty four for old time's sake.
- 3:09Speaker 2: And it was so full circle and I'm standing there
- 3:12Speaker 2: kind of dizzy going. Even when it came to my
- 3:15Speaker 2: ability to put my footprint on Broadway, Eric found a
- 3:19Speaker 2: way to put his stamp of approval on it. It's fantastic.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's not like we go sit and have a burger together.
- 3:26Speaker 2: He just I think there's a mutual respect there that
- 3:30Speaker 2: is just really enormous.
- 3:32Speaker 1: There's something so and it doesn't it We're just talking
- 3:35Speaker 1: about other music genres, you know. As we started talking
- 3:38Speaker 1: and as I got to see like pop music and
- 3:42Speaker 1: pop radio and then versus country, like different different genres
- 3:46Speaker 1: don't necessarily like help each other up, right, So for
- 3:49Speaker 1: Eric to be a guy who is a definition of
- 3:52Speaker 1: forging his own way, definitely, Eric was going to do
- 3:55Speaker 1: it his way or he was going to go be
- 3:56Speaker 1: agreed at Walmart. There was no two ways about it,
- 3:59Speaker 1: right right, it worked out for him. What does it
- 4:01Speaker 1: mean for an artist like that who paved their own path? Year,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I literally look at you and feel like you are
- 4:08Speaker 1: you are the same, right, Like you want to do
- 4:10Speaker 1: this and you want to be successful, but like we're
- 4:13Speaker 1: not negotiating who we are, what the music's going to
- 4:16Speaker 1: sound like.
- 4:17Speaker 3: So what does it mean?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Eric, who did it before you, has seen that in
- 4:21Speaker 1: you and kind of been like, hey, kid, like come
- 4:24Speaker 1: this way a little bit.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's like living in the song mister Misunderstood.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's him looking at me going I.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Understand is that is that? Do you think that?
- 4:35Speaker 2: And even when you feel like nobody sees you or
- 4:37Speaker 2: nobody hears you, I see you and I hear you.
- 4:40Speaker 3: How important is that validation?
- 4:42Speaker 2: I didn't know I needed it, and I didn't know
- 4:45Speaker 2: it was one of the things that I had been
- 4:47Speaker 2: searching for. But when somebody like Eric offers that so generously,
- 4:51Speaker 2: with no prompting, there was no solicitation for that, but
- 4:54Speaker 2: for him to go, I get it, and I like it.
- 4:57Speaker 2: That gives you just enough gas in your tank to
- 4:59Speaker 2: get over whatever the next obstacle is going to be.
- 5:03Speaker 1: This is an industry, and I and I say this
- 5:06Speaker 1: in the most respectful of ways. It's an industry where
- 5:10Speaker 1: it's like you're searching for the next validation point. It's
- 5:14Speaker 1: almost like you're on a road trip. We're all on
- 5:16Speaker 1: a road. You're on your side as an artist, we're
- 5:18Speaker 1: on our side doing the radio stuff, and everyone's looking
- 5:20Speaker 1: for the next rest stop.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Right, Well, you want to go see the world's largest
- 5:24Speaker 2: frying pan, and then we want to go see the
- 5:26Speaker 2: world's largest ball of wool, And what's next on our
- 5:28Speaker 2: driven You're like, I don't know. It looks like there's
- 5:29Speaker 2: a giant fork somewhere in New Mexico. You're like, we're
- 5:31Speaker 2: going to see it.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Have you driven through prim Nevada, by the way, the
- 5:36Speaker 1: world's largest thermometer.
- 5:37Speaker 2: No, I've never seen the world's largest thermometer.
- 5:39Speaker 3: If you drive from Vegas, Oh you have? Has she
- 5:43Speaker 3: seen it?
- 5:43Speaker 2: I've seen the world's largest thermometer. Was it back in
- 5:45Speaker 2: my drinking days? Oh? Okay, yeah, you drive.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Through let me tell you very underwhelming. Obviously you were
- 5:54Speaker 1: like it sucks because it was only like sixty eight degrees.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I was like, what the hell, it isn't even that impressive.
- 5:59Speaker 3: It'safway pause.
- 6:01Speaker 2: But I've seen big butter Jesus, So that's that's.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Have you played in the Minnesota stay Fair before,
- 6:07Speaker 1: because they literally carve women out of butter there.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I've seen some really cool butter carvings, but I don't
- 6:13Speaker 2: know that I have seen butter ladies butter ladies.
- 6:17Speaker 3: That's or hard left.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But but with with that road of like searching for
- 6:24Speaker 1: validation throughout places, right, there are good ways to do
- 6:27Speaker 1: that that fulfill you and make you feel welcome and
- 6:30Speaker 1: loved and where you're supposed to be.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Like Eric, you know, reaching a handout.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But there's also things that could be an award show,
- 6:37Speaker 1: a number one winning an award itself that kind of
- 6:42Speaker 1: help you that you're reaching me like, well, that didn't
- 6:45Speaker 1: do anything. What are some of those things along the
- 6:46Speaker 1: way that you had to learn? Like, hey, this is great,
- 6:48Speaker 1: but I can't.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I can't always value this, right.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I think the way the way awards season feels, we
- 6:58Speaker 2: all get so excited for each other. And then I've
- 7:01Speaker 2: watched I mean, it was amazing when I won my
- 7:04Speaker 2: first ACM, when I won my first CMA, and watching
- 7:08Speaker 2: people coming up behind me placing way heavier weights on
- 7:14Speaker 2: that then is probably safe because when you if you
- 7:19Speaker 2: haven't learned how to lose, man, is it tough. And
- 7:24Speaker 2: I've I've watched, I've watched females. I've watched male artists
- 7:28Speaker 2: be really really really shocked that they did not win
- 7:31Speaker 2: in a category. And I'm in the category more often
- 7:36Speaker 2: than not. I'm the Susan Lucci of the CMAS and
- 7:39Speaker 2: the ACMs, always nominated and uh and and rarely does
- 7:44Speaker 2: she take home the piece. And you you need to
- 7:46Speaker 2: learn how to and it doesn't devalue you. Someone else's
- 7:51Speaker 2: win is not your loss and the things that you're doing.
- 7:54Speaker 2: The validation is butts in seats. The validation is your
- 7:58Speaker 2: merch sales at the end of the night, and it's
- 7:59Speaker 2: low to get together and celebrate our accomplishments or just
- 8:03Speaker 2: celebrate one person's accomplishment award after award all night long.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That's all so lovely, But know that when you're nominated,
- 8:11Speaker 2: that's part of winning right there. And when you lose,
- 8:14Speaker 2: learn how to lose. Don't get up, pout off, sit
- 8:19Speaker 2: in your seat, straighten your spine, and support the person
- 8:21Speaker 2: who takes the hardware home.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I love that.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It's a great lesson because you will learn the hard way.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And this, listen, this could be if someone's listening to
- 8:30Speaker 1: this and wants to chase being an artist, a baseball player,
- 8:32Speaker 1: a doctor, what learn how to take the l because
- 8:35Speaker 1: they get handed out regularly.
- 8:38Speaker 2: The way you carry yourself in the struggle is going
- 8:42Speaker 2: to be more visible and more microscoped than the way
- 8:46Speaker 2: you take the w How does that?
- 8:48Speaker 3: What does that teach you about who you are?
- 8:49Speaker 1: Because the journey as an artist, like I'd imagine there's
- 8:53Speaker 1: a lot of like like like it's an onion effect, right,
- 8:57Speaker 1: because you come in knowing who you are, you know
- 8:59Speaker 1: you might fail.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Here, or a show doesn't sell out here, or.
- 9:02Speaker 1: A song goes top ten but no number one, so
- 9:04Speaker 1: it must not have been a hit. All of those
- 9:06Speaker 1: things happen that kind of make you look in the
- 9:08Speaker 1: mirror a little more.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Do you appreciate those things more that they happened, because oh, yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 3: you know who you are more than you.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Would have if all this cute stuff happened all the time.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I just walked onto the screen and everything was
- 9:21Speaker 2: mine and I'm the queen of all of it. Then
- 9:25Speaker 2: then what do I know about the value of it?
- 9:27Speaker 2: I was just speaking over at I was over at
- 9:29Speaker 2: the Warner Building and one of our female artists that
- 9:32Speaker 2: is younger than me is in a bus for the
- 9:34Speaker 2: first time, and she's the one that drives the van
- 9:39Speaker 2: and she's the one that knows how to back up
- 9:40Speaker 2: a trailer. That woman understands what it is like to
- 9:45Speaker 2: sleep in a bus, and that's how we felt. So
- 9:51Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know. Hearing that today, I
- 9:57Speaker 2: was like, that's right. And when something is in the
- 9:59Speaker 2: top ten, that doesn't mean it's not a hit. It
- 10:01Speaker 2: means it wasn't a number one. What does a number
- 10:03Speaker 2: one mean? I have no idea. Let's ask someone. If
- 10:06Speaker 2: it's in the top forty, that's great. If it's in
- 10:08Speaker 2: the top thirty, that's fantastic. Top twenty, that's fantastic. You
- 10:12Speaker 2: know what things mean when you have to earn every
- 10:14Speaker 2: inch that you stand on.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I love that, and it's it's such a great life lesson,
- 10:19Speaker 1: especially for like the younger generation, which I mean I
- 10:22Speaker 1: sound like my back hurts.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I know, I know, but I mean we're the same age.
- 10:28Speaker 1: But it's such a lesson like fail, like you see
- 10:32Speaker 1: all you see is the great.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It's the Instagram effect.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Trouble so you can triumph exactly. Wow, those are big words.
- 10:39Speaker 2: They sounded like, I mean, I went to college in Arkansas.
- 10:41Speaker 2: We're fine, but I mean the feeling of that, like right, right,
- 10:46Speaker 2: but do struggle so you can feel good about the
- 10:49Speaker 2: things that you accomplish.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, there's beauty in it.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Absolutely, speaking of beauty. Nothing like a little bit of
- 10:55Speaker 1: a tour. You put one together? What so it's twenty
- 10:58Speaker 1: six cities in all right? How do you pick twenty
- 11:02Speaker 1: six cities?
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't pick any of them.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Like you're like, what do you say twenty six, I'm in.
- 11:08Speaker 2: They're like, well, the question, is you up for a
- 11:11Speaker 2: headlining tour in the fault? Yes? Okay, are you yes? No,
- 11:14Speaker 2: that's it. Yes, And it doesn't matter if it's in
- 11:17Speaker 2: Baton Rouge or if it's in Boise, And it doesn't matter.
- 11:20Speaker 2: If it doesn't matter. I'm here to make music for
- 11:22Speaker 2: as long as there's breath in my lungs, and I
- 11:24Speaker 2: will do that. And it doesn't matter for in Nevada,
- 11:26Speaker 2: doesn't matter for in Florida. I'm I'm in the bus.
- 11:28Speaker 1: When it comes to cities, and no fluff on this answer. Okay,
- 11:33Speaker 1: when it comes to cities, every artist wants to play
- 11:37Speaker 1: at home. Of course, wants to play at Bridstone. Yes,
- 11:41Speaker 1: where are other cities that you're like, oh yeah, let's
- 11:43Speaker 1: do a tour. I can't wait to get to this
- 11:45Speaker 1: city because of this, this city, because of.
- 11:48Speaker 2: This always for worth, because Billy Bob's is so legendary
- 11:50Speaker 2: and we always have the best time there, because we
- 11:53Speaker 2: are more relaxed in Billy Bob's.
- 11:55Speaker 3: But is that why is that it feels like home?
- 11:57Speaker 3: Or I think.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Because yeah, I think it just feels like you're at home.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And I mean it is vast and there are so
- 12:03Speaker 2: many people there, but everybody there knows what the reputation
- 12:06Speaker 2: of that joint is and they're there to experience that.
- 12:09Speaker 2: And you know what the reputation of that joint is,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and you're there to provide it. Like this, We're does
- 12:13Speaker 2: meeting each other's needs here. But I always want to
- 12:16Speaker 2: make sure that we get to play in Cincinnati. Isn't that?
- 12:20Speaker 2: Like everybody does that when I go. I love Cincy really,
- 12:23Speaker 2: the fans are fantastic.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Okay, I thought you were talking like Skyline Chili as
- 12:27Speaker 1: your Jam or something like that.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But the just the crowds of people. There's a few
- 12:32Speaker 2: places in Iowa too that I've been like, man, I
- 12:34Speaker 2: love the people here. But sincey and Akron, they've got
- 12:37Speaker 2: it going on.
- 12:38Speaker 1: There's one in Minnesota that I've heard artists say that
- 12:43Speaker 1: we Fest in Minnesota is great. I've heard we Fest,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I've so. I'm from Minneapolis, but I've never been to
- 12:48Speaker 1: we Fest.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great.
- 12:50Speaker 3: It's like unreal, yes.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And like Hodag in Wisconsin also unreal crowd unreal and
- 12:56Speaker 2: they rotate the pit, oh real. So you can stand
- 12:59Speaker 2: in the pit for three or four songs and then
- 13:00Speaker 2: they rod chat it out. You go stand at the
- 13:02Speaker 2: back of the line, so you get a fresh pit
- 13:04Speaker 2: the whole time you're on stage. You're getting fresh people
- 13:06Speaker 2: every four songs.
- 13:08Speaker 1: That's true because dope, I've been the guy that got
- 13:10Speaker 1: as close to the.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Stage as I could.
- 13:11Speaker 1: And then that's also where you right, because I've got help.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I got help that I blame stage coach. But anyway,
- 13:24Speaker 1: when it comes to the music creation process, you have already.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I mean it's not like you're you're not a new
- 13:32Speaker 1: artist by any means, but you're still in a spot
- 13:34Speaker 1: where you're meeting new fans every day.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, trying to grow every day.
- 13:39Speaker 1: So with that, what what are things from the first
- 13:42Speaker 1: time we ever met you to now that have helped
- 13:46Speaker 1: you grow as a creator, Because obviously the music you
- 13:49Speaker 1: were making early and the music you're making now feels
- 13:52Speaker 1: different to.
- 13:53Speaker 2: You, right, it grows?
- 13:54Speaker 3: Uh So, what so.
- 13:56Speaker 1: The early version of you to now, what what are
- 13:58Speaker 1: the biggest changes as you sit down to write or
- 14:00Speaker 1: record something.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I think being in less of a hurry and not
- 14:07Speaker 2: feeling a feeling of panic when it's not right right away,
- 14:11Speaker 2: or or if we're in the writing room and we
- 14:13Speaker 2: didn't get everything we wanted to get today to just
- 14:16Speaker 2: not panic and it's I don't want to say not
- 14:19Speaker 2: care because that sounds disconnected, and it's not being disconnected.
- 14:23Speaker 2: It's knowing that it's okay. We didn't get everything we
- 14:26Speaker 2: needed to get done today in the studio and that's okay.
- 14:29Speaker 2: We didn't get the bridge for that stupid song we've
- 14:31Speaker 2: been working so hard on and it's okay. And I
- 14:34Speaker 2: think the patience that has grown through that is what's
- 14:38Speaker 2: making the biggest difference as far as growing is, especially
- 14:43Speaker 2: in growing our audience year to year. Just use your patients.
- 14:47Speaker 2: It's okay. So you didn't so you didn't sell every
- 14:50Speaker 2: single seat in Greeley, Colorado today, Who cares? Do it
- 14:54Speaker 2: next time?
- 14:55Speaker 3: It's okay because if you do it now, what are
- 14:58Speaker 3: you gonna do next time?
- 14:59Speaker 1: Right?
- 14:59Speaker 2: Because what are you gonna do? Move up to the
- 15:00Speaker 2: next thing is like twice the venue size and not
- 15:03Speaker 2: sell that. I was like, please just wear the pants
- 15:05Speaker 2: that fit you.
- 15:06Speaker 3: That's actually awesome. I like that a lot.
- 15:09Speaker 1: When you when you talk about taking your time, not
- 15:13Speaker 1: not rushing things, is that something that you learned the
- 15:16Speaker 1: hard way? Or are there are other people around you
- 15:17Speaker 1: that are like a girl, like cool, a little bit
- 15:20Speaker 1: of both, a little bit of both.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And then I had a co writer for years and
- 15:24Speaker 2: years and years. We've been best friends for a long time,
- 15:26Speaker 2: and she would say she uses dog a lot. Dog,
- 15:30Speaker 2: you gotta learn just to not panic. Who cares? And
- 15:33Speaker 2: I was like, what do you mean, who cares? We
- 15:35Speaker 2: have to get this done today. And then I was like, oh,
- 15:38Speaker 2: she's right, I have to learn to just not panic.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It's it's been really to calm down.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Dog.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Where you're gonna go?
- 15:45Speaker 3: I mean? Valid?
- 15:46Speaker 2: What else are you gonna do?
- 15:47Speaker 3: Valid?
- 15:48Speaker 1: When you when you who's first time in the studio?
- 15:52Speaker 1: I'm just kidding, it's a joke, I'm sure with tom
- 15:56Speaker 1: O case semi emotional question. Yeah, because we're constantly growing
- 16:00Speaker 1: as people, regardless of what we do.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I think that's the idea anyway.
- 16:06Speaker 1: We are constantly growing as individuals and as humans through
- 16:10Speaker 1: the trials of being a new artist, second guessing things,
- 16:15Speaker 1: whether it's a song or your approach or am I
- 16:17Speaker 1: even am I doing this right at all? To now,
- 16:21Speaker 1: what have you learned that has made you a more
- 16:23Speaker 1: comfortable human being in the skin you're in?
- 16:27Speaker 2: Asking yourself, is it just that I'm not good enough?
- 16:32Speaker 2: Am I doing this right? Should I make another record?
- 16:37Speaker 2: If I quit drinking? Am I going to suck? That
- 16:39Speaker 2: question is going to change the words inside it. But
- 16:43Speaker 2: the doubt is never going to leave. And there's your
- 16:46Speaker 2: comfort because the next time it creeps up, you go,
- 16:49Speaker 2: oh yeah, I felt this way last June. I remember
- 16:52Speaker 2: that and I got through it just fine. And then
- 16:55Speaker 2: also realizing that questioning yourself is how you're going to grow.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Oh am I good. Well, there's something in you that
- 17:03Speaker 2: feels like something needs to level up, and that's not
- 17:05Speaker 2: coming from an outside source. That's in you. That feeling
- 17:08Speaker 2: was put in you. You will meet the need.
- 17:12Speaker 1: When you talk about that doubt or that uncomfort. What's
- 17:14Speaker 1: the biggest question that you've had for yourself looking in
- 17:17Speaker 1: the mirror, sitting alone, backstage, whatever that you have absolutely
- 17:21Speaker 1: knocked out.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Of the park.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Oh wow, like the biggest wall in front of you
- 17:25Speaker 1: that you just kicked down easily. Maybe not easily, but
- 17:29Speaker 1: I mean on the other side of it.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Today, dreaming when I was younger, of being a member
- 17:35Speaker 2: of the Grand Old Opry, dreaming of playing it at all.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Standing on this side of it, I'm like, man, some
- 17:44Speaker 2: doozy bumps in there, but we got it.
- 17:47Speaker 3: We did it.
- 17:48Speaker 2: And being in country music, there's always, and I'm sure
- 17:51Speaker 2: it's in any industry, there's always the thing that's being
- 17:54Speaker 2: celebrated and the thing that is awesome and it's just
- 17:58Speaker 2: not on your TV right now, and so you gotta
- 18:02Speaker 2: you gotta remember that. I mean, there are artists that
- 18:04Speaker 2: I can credit for influencing me so much that we're
- 18:09Speaker 2: never on the end caps at Kroger and think like
- 18:15Speaker 2: I think about songs like nothing but the Wheel Patty Loveless.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Was that ever a radio single? Was that song ever
- 18:24Speaker 2: plastered all over the billboards and all over the award shows? No,
- 18:28Speaker 2: but it created a songwriter when I heard it. So
- 18:31Speaker 2: even though it doesn't have the most sparkle on it,
- 18:34Speaker 2: or it's not the most celebrated song on the record,
- 18:36Speaker 2: it could create another musician. Do not discount it.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeh, that's so great.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I love that the new album is out now. It's
- 18:45Speaker 1: called Wild, So album titles I feel like, are it's
- 18:51Speaker 1: two things for an artist. It fits, so we toss
- 18:53Speaker 1: it on there and we're moving on right Or it's like, hey,
- 18:55Speaker 1: this is extremely pivotal for where I'm at and what
- 18:59Speaker 1: we asked Lady Wilson the same question, whirlwind, because literally
- 19:02Speaker 1: I don't know what is up and what is down?
- 19:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so a whirlwind. So why did this fit for
- 19:07Speaker 3: where you're at right now?
- 19:09Speaker 2: I thought about I looked at all the track listing
- 19:12Speaker 2: and I'm like, Okay, if we name it Arkansas Mud,
- 19:15Speaker 2: then anyone who has never been to the state of
- 19:17Speaker 2: Arkansas already is not clicking on it because you name
- 19:20Speaker 2: the whole record that, So that doesn't capture it. If
- 19:23Speaker 2: we name it hand Me Downs, one of the most
- 19:25Speaker 2: important songs I'll have ever written. At the end of
- 19:28Speaker 2: my life, we will look back and go, that's one
- 19:30Speaker 2: of the most important songs she ever it. But if
- 19:33Speaker 2: we put that on the title of the record, you
- 19:35Speaker 2: think it's a sad record, or you think it's a
- 19:38Speaker 2: I don't know, like it's a it's somehow discounting itself
- 19:42Speaker 2: from the get go, and I'm not gonna let that
- 19:45Speaker 2: happen either. Lines in the carpet it it doesn't capture
- 19:48Speaker 2: the spirit of the whole thing. But when I think
- 19:50Speaker 2: about the song, the track listing rattlesnake. So this woman
- 19:55Speaker 2: comes from she's the daughter of a rattlesnake who clawed
- 20:00Speaker 2: out of the Arkansas mud, who believes there's not enough
- 20:04Speaker 2: water in the river for the Lord to forgive her.
- 20:06Speaker 2: In fact, I say, don't cry for me when I die,
- 20:08Speaker 2: just mark my grave with a railroad tie. And then
- 20:10Speaker 2: we talked about having a drinking problem. Of course that
- 20:12Speaker 2: girl has a drinking problem. Just the swath of things
- 20:15Speaker 2: we've covered from track one to track four or five
- 20:18Speaker 2: is wild. And then as you're like digging through the
- 20:21Speaker 2: trauma in here and covering things and healing things in
- 20:25Speaker 2: you and yourself and the band and your listeners, throughout
- 20:28Speaker 2: the stuff we're tackling is wild. And then by the
- 20:33Speaker 2: time you get to the song, wild completely different. Meaning
- 20:38Speaker 2: the part of you that believes anything is possible, that
- 20:42Speaker 2: was the loudest when you were younger, is still alive
- 20:45Speaker 2: and it is begging you to hang out with it.
- 20:48Speaker 3: That is wild.
- 20:49Speaker 2: So I was like, okay, wow, I mean I didn't
- 20:51Speaker 2: want anybody to think it was a mattress sale, you know,
- 20:53Speaker 2: like it's wild and now it's twenty five percent more
- 20:55Speaker 2: fowarm or whatever that's that's not going to be fitting.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Although that does sound comfortable.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Right, But wild in that sense and inviting us into
- 21:05Speaker 2: the wild, back into ourselves, and when we believe that
- 21:08Speaker 2: all things are anything as possible. That really covered it.
- 21:12Speaker 2: And I'm so thankful that Mikayla Lynn and Jeremy Spielman
- 21:15Speaker 2: and Materesa Berg had pins in their pockets that day.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I love when we can get you on the calendar
- 21:21Speaker 1: to talk music because you're soulful and you're real, and
- 21:24Speaker 1: you're raw in every answer you give. And so something
- 21:28Speaker 1: you just said made me want to ask as somebody
- 21:31Speaker 1: who is so authentically you, which some people could be like,
- 21:36Speaker 1: but like that, I mean, that's a compliment i'd imagine
- 21:39Speaker 1: as an artist like it is. You don't not once
- 21:42Speaker 1: have we ever felt you're creating a song to make
- 21:45Speaker 1: sure you're writing big hits. Now once have you came
- 21:47Speaker 1: in here feel like you know, you're just chasing the
- 21:51Speaker 1: biggest songs and you're like chasing the songs that fit
- 21:54Speaker 1: you and hope that they feed souls around you.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Correct, But for feeding your soul? What song?
- 22:02Speaker 1: And it's gonna be tough, because I'm gonna make you
- 22:03Speaker 1: pick one, Okay, on this album, the most therapeutic, the
- 22:07Speaker 1: song that has helped you the most.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Wild, hands down wild. When I heard it, I pictured
- 22:15Speaker 2: little me sitting on the floor, dreaming of what big
- 22:18Speaker 2: me would be like. And then I was like, oh
- 22:21Speaker 2: my god, she's still in there. I'd completely forgotten about her.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I just left her sitting there on the floor all
- 22:25Speaker 2: these years. And it made me want to run around
- 22:29Speaker 2: the room. And it made me so mad because the
- 22:32Speaker 2: melody is just so good, It is so delicious, and
- 22:35Speaker 2: we don't get the luxury of having melodies that diverse anymore.
- 22:39Speaker 2: And it was it was like meeting It was like
- 22:42Speaker 2: recognizing a friend that you haven't seen in forever and
- 22:45Speaker 2: you didn't even know you missed her. That song grabs
- 22:49Speaker 2: me by the guts.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Good Lord, do you hope that it does the same
- 22:53Speaker 1: when when somebody hears it.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Like that's yes, that's the hope. If it moves me,
- 22:57Speaker 2: I hope it moves you. And I'm not a writer
- 23:00Speaker 2: on that song. And that's because my job isn't just
- 23:04Speaker 2: as a songwriter. My job, the reason I'm on the
- 23:06Speaker 2: planet is to make sure that songs don't go unheard.
- 23:11Speaker 3: That's so good.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Do you get to hear wild and I get to
- 23:13Speaker 2: be why?
- 23:14Speaker 3: That's so awesome?
- 23:15Speaker 1: Listen, Congratulations on the tour, Congratulations on the album. And
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's been like too long since.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I know, it's been like over two years since I
- 23:22Speaker 2: got to sit in this chair and stare at your face. Well, fine,
- 23:27Speaker 2: it's on me. You're gonna get you're gonna get take
- 23:30Speaker 2: kind of tired in my face. You're gonna look out
- 23:33Speaker 2: the window and be like Jesus, actually.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Out there's gonna be like, she's back again. She's down,
- 23:41Speaker 1: she's she's eating mac and cheese out there and says
- 23:43Speaker 1: she's here for another interview.
- 23:45Speaker 3: It's Wednesday, don't kid it, you dear.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good to see you.
