- 0:05SPEAKER_02: What's up, everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Welcome to yet another episode of the bottom line on sports, our show about the intersection between sports and money.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: I'm John Jacques Taylor.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: And you know we like to get down with a number.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: But first, you got to remember to subscribe, rate, review.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Five stars only.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Except if it's like a 10-point scale, then a 10-point is okay.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: And then we can get down with that.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you can also email us at uh uh info at bottomline on sports.com.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We will we will accept your email.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're we're very fancy.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Let's kick it off with our number of the week 1.4.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: That, my friends, I know I know you're curious about that, is the amount of money, the highest salary in the WNBA, and it goes to Asia Wilson, Nafisa Collins, and somebody else.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: Three players making 1.4 million in the WNBA.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Kelsey Mitchell, I think, was a third, right?
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Kelsey Mitchell, that's right, from the Interhand Fever, who went down to your Dallas Wings and page buckets.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, I watched, I watched most of that game.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: But you know, uh 1.4 million.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: If you're comparing it to um NBA salaries, you scoff at it, you chuckle at it.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: If you can if you compare it to my salary, you're like, hey, everybody will give me a spot in the WNBA.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: But um, I think it's good that they're making more money.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I think it's good uh that they got a good TV deal where they could boost salaries.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think uh I think there is finally, I mean, let's keep it real.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: It's hard to believe that WNBA has been going on for like 30 years.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, I remember it a little bit with Lisa Leslie and that crew, the LA Sparks and Cynthia Cooper.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: But now to me, and I'm gonna keep it real with y'all.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: When I watched The Wings play the fever the other day in the opener, that I'm telling you, was a good basketball game.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Were you were you in person for that game, or were you?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Let's let's not go crazy.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Let's not go crazy.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: No, I was I was at home watching it while I was doing some other stuff, but I had the game on the whole time, uh-huh, and it was an excellent basketball game.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: They were getting up and down, it's a physical play.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: How did how did they how did AZ FUD look in the game?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I I didn't see the game.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Are you being funny or are you being serious?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I'm being serious, I have no idea.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: I didn't see the game at all.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: See, AZ FUD is already in the midst of a controversy.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: That I know.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Okay, this time no, no, no.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: This I'm a thing.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Not that controversy, it's a different I'm a journalist.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: And so I spent my career covering the Cowboys.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: I look at things through a journalism prisoner.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: So AZ FUD, the number one player overall in the WNBA draft, going to the worst team in the WNBA.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: And she didn't start the first game.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Now, some of you may be like, Well, what's the big deal?
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: And I would say to you, name me another sport where the number one overall pick in a sport where the rookies play, you know, football, basketball.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: And your number one pick overall don't start.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: But did she how much did she play in the game, though?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Did she have good minutes?
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: 18 minutes.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And it's a four it's a 40-minute game?
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: So here's here's my point.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: That's not good.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: My point is, and like you could legitimately say, if you wanted to, and it's not a stretch, that the Dallas Mavericks, like the strength of their team is the backcourt.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Like uh Rickey Ogumba Ogumba, I think that's how you say it.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: She didn't know.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: The Dallas Stars, you mean.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Stop.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: The Dallas Wings.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Dallas Wings.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: She's been a really good player for a long time.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: The WNBA team, whatever they're called.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Uh the wings.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, you got Paige Becker, she's a guard.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: You got another guard named Odyssey Sims, who I know her because she played high school basketball in Dallas.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: She's been in W NBA for like 10 years.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: She's a guard, and she scored 20 the other night.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: So Rickey scored 20, Paige scored 20, and uh Sims scored 20.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: So you could say, well, that's why Hazy Fuzz is not playing.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: And I and that might just be your point.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Hey, she's of course I would say then once you draft a number one overall for.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Well, and look at the last two number one picks were Caitlin Clark and Paige Becker's.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Not only did they play, they played immediately, and they were all really, really good.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: So, and I'm not making any grand you know projections of what this means for Hazy Flood, but it's a question that should be asked.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: And so they somebody asked the coach, and this is what aggravates me as a journalist.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, I asked you, hey Coach Pink, how come AZ Flood didn't start?
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: She's the number one pick overall.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: That's a very legitimate question.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: And he gave some rigor-moral answer, and then he goes, Well, you know, nobody's asking why Shaq Taylor didn't start, Jeremy Pink didn't start.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: They're not the number one pick, idiot.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: God, you know, that was a total, I had no idea there was an AZ FUD controversy.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I just know that you, and the reason I asked is I didn't I didn't see the game, and I know she's a number one pick, and I'm always curious to your point, number one pick's gonna really have a good debut, or how how how is she looking?
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And what what are people saying?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Um that's a pretty that's actually a pretty remarkable story, you know.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Now, in her defense, and see this is why, you know, again, from a journalistic standpoint, and let me take a very quick exit rant.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: The wings are one of the dumbest sports franchises in America.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: And I don't, and I say that from they're just a bad organization in terms of they've had six coaches in nine years.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: You know, they had that PR snafu when they when the guy asked uh the Kevin Sherrington from the Dallas Morning News, asked AJ Fudd, and then the PR person steps in.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: You can't find a PR person in America who says that was a good way to handle that.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: You know, and now you haven't prepped your coach well enough to know, hey, don't say this is why they hadn't start.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Say whatever.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: How about the truth, man?
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: And here's the truth, or what looks like it is the truth.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: She didn't play in the second game.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: She had some kind of knee thing.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's why she only played 18 minutes in the start in the opener.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: So if you can say, instead of trying to be all affurtive, you just come out and say, Hey, Hazy Fud's battling a little knee aggravation, that's why we limited her minutes.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Then you have leeway to do whatever you want to do with her for a few weeks.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: But now, now you speculate and you say, huh, suddenly she has a knee issue.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: And you wonder if that so so-called real or is that fridge, if it just magically reared its ugly head because she wasn't playing that well or she didn't deserve those minutes.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And we we don't know.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, again, I'm not accusing that I don't know anything about the Dallas Wings.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I'm not accusing anybody of lying.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not accusing right, but I'm not accusing anybody of lying, but it does raise that question, which makes the PR move that you described, you know, even worse and shows it even has more legs, which is which is makes them you're right.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe it is a pretty stupid franchise.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no, maybe too.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: They're one of the dumbest franchises out there in the way they handle things, just dumb.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but anyway, so it's 1.4 million.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's get back to the subject.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a 1.4 million, which is a top salary, uh, which is great because I I think that uh the WNBA now, at least from what I've read and seen now, is that the WNBA franchises are now profitable.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: That's due in large part to uh they have a nice new decent sized media contract that's paying each of the franchises.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Um but you can draw a direct line to when Caitlin Clark entered the league.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It it created, it created, I I think, you know, it it created a rising tide.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: They got private planes to take them to uh you know from the treat it like a real professional sports.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: But the other thing too about women's uh women's professional basketball players, for years they played overseas, and they played overseas because they made more money overseas, not because the competition was necessarily better, because it was it paid more money.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: So now I think you're gonna see uh much like the NBA, I think you're not only gonna see the top American players making the WNBA a priority, I think you're gonna start to see an influx of decent international players as well, which will only improve the overall league.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: No, that's a good point, because I think they're expanding by two or three teams.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I so they're gonna they're not they're still to me, and they have to be careful about it because like I don't know that women's basketball is such a stronghold that people are going to see bad teams play.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: And so it's almost that situation where you want almost everybody to be close to 500 so that you know fans will come see them.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: And and also you work you worry about in any sport, you worry about a dilution of a talent pool.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: You know, is there a significant is there a significant amount of talent to make teams as competitive?
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And you you see that you know with any sort of expansion team, with the exception of the NHL, which is a whole other animal.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: But if you see that with an expansion team in any other major sport, it you really notice that you know that the talent pool starts to thin out, and you start to see some really poor, poorly performing teams, a mediocre play.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, let's move on from uh women's basketball.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Now, no else will you get a stuff where you get that much passion about women's basketball.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: About AZ, about AZ Fudd, somebody who, you know, I hadn't, I hadn't, I was just thinking, oh, I wonder how she did.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: An innocent question.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Let's take it to the NFL.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Where the NFL, when they bought ESPN for three billion with a B dollars.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: By the way, ESPN bought I mean ESPN bought the NFL network and all these properties for three billion with a B dollars.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: It created some stuff that I really didn't think about, but you did, in terms of what did they do with that inventory that the NFL made.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Well, well, essentially what happened is because of that, and it's it's not worth getting into sort of structurally, but there essentially there were four uh broadcast windows, or you know, broadcast windows meaning there's four like times that now, aha, if I'm a network or if I'm a streamer, I can bid on these.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: And uh, because those games were no longer gonna be on the NFL network or ESPN, they're they're went somewhere else.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: So two of those four windows went to broadcast networks.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: It looks like the other two are gonna go to Netflix, yeah, but concurrent to that, um Fox got a couple of new windows for themselves.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: So the long kind of fallout of all of this is that the NFL is making a lot more money because they're renegotiating some of their media deals.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: There's a and the broadcast, there's gonna be more the broadcast networks themselves are getting a big chunk of those games.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: That's important because the DOJ, although they're relatively toothless, the Department of Justice, although they're relatively uh toothless, is looking at the antitrust exemption from the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act that allows you know the the NFL to negotiate as a single entity with the broadcast networks, you know, um, and and vice versa.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: So the NFL would be reluctant then to put, in theory, to put more games on streamers because those don't fall under the uh don't don't fall under that antitrust exemption.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So the long and short of it is NFL is opening up its, it's this is the beginning of the NFL, opening up its windows to renegotiate its media properties.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Those are only going to go up.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: And there is pressure, whether it's real or imagined, from the government to keep as many of those games on broadcast TV as possible.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: And this is kind of the first kind of catalyst in salvo, and what I think is gonna be, you're gonna start to see a number of these stories emerge in the next year or two.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: So what does that what does that mean for consumers?
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: That they get more games where they don't have to go to Netflix and and pay if you don't have Netflix?
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Right now, yeah, it looks like there's more games that are gonna be on traditional broadcast networks.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: There are gonna be a couple more on Netflix, but I think long term, I don't think it makes a difference.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: I think it's gonna go to I think the the whoever can pay the most money is probably gonna get you know get whatever it is that they want.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Um that said, the there still will be an emphasis from the NFL to keep a lot of it on broadcast networks for just to maintain the illusion.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you maintain the illusion, but just to maintain the the idea of the sports broadcasting act, you know.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: So, but I think look, long and short for for fans is gonna be, you know, they'll be able to watch games, they're still gonna have to track down games on multiple platforms.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna be that much different, you know.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Um, there's just certain windows are gonna be on broadcast networks that were on streaming platforms or cable before, and certain games that might be on you know uh uh broadcasts are maybe gonna go to some of the streamers now, you know, but it's still gonna be the same mess for consumers.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you just you just have to decide as a as a consumer how you want to get down.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, and like I think a lot of I don't know, this is a good question.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Are you a Netflix person?
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: I subscribe to Netflix, yes.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it seems to me like you know, one like everybody has Netflix.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, it feels like everybody's got Netflix.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: So because everybody has Netflix, when they put a game on Netflix, it doesn't feel like a big deal.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: It's just one more channel you go to.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Now, are you an Amazon Prime person?
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I am.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Well, you just got a lot of disposable damn income.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Uh I didn't say I paid for your phone, but I have I have them both, yes.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: So um I don't know if as many people have Amazon Prime.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I have it because I do a lot of damn packaging, and so I I I got it years ago because I don't know, man.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: Something about that freeze, free shipping.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: I I fell for that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: It's anything that's anything but free, but that's a conversation for another day.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, so again, that doesn't feel to me like it's different.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: But what you just have to do is you have to decide, do you just want to watch your team?
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: Like most people watch a team.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: I think everybody's got their team that they watch, and they like regular NFL football.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: You know, so I don't know.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't know if people are chasing the high of I gotta watch every game that's available.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I think the NFL's a bit different than other sports because generally you know when the games are on.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Your games are on from Sunday, you know, in the you know, Sunday afternoons, and then there's a Sunday night game, and then there's a Monday night game, and there's a Thursday night game.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's generally most people know that.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: So because they kind of know the schedule in advance, I think it's easier for them to find the games.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: But I I contrast it with the NBA playoffs that are going on right now.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't have any idea who's got what game at what time.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: I I you know what?
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have no idea.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have no idea.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: Um I turn here's a great point, man.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: I turned on YouTube TV the other day, thinking the NBA game was on, and I go, oh, there's no, there's no, there's gotta be a game.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: And so I then went to my phone to check the scores.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Basically, I'm checking the schedule to see okay, there's a game being played.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: And so I did the process of elimination.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: I said, if I can't find it on YouTube TV, perhaps it's on Amazon, right?
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: And I went to Amazon and there it was, but that was just a guess.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: I had no idea where the hell the game was, right?
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: And so that's the difference between the NBA because you don't quite know what the schedule is.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: At least with the NFL, you know roughly what the schedule is, and you have and you have a finite number of choices to find the game.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: So it isn't necessarily as bad with the NBA.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: I I I by the way, I think the NBA playoff coverage has been very, very good this year.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: I couldn't tell you what announcer is on what network and and what game is on what what streamer.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: I I have none, bro.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I I uh literally I have none.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: I I just uh I use process of elimination to try to find them.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Well, you know how I you know how I figure it out is that there's uh it's either the I think it's the ESPN app or the SI app.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Uh the SI uh page.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: I just hit schedule, and schedule tells me when the game is and who's got it.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: That's the only way, that's the only reason I know.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Well, if we should have to do that, man.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that that'll just show you.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, it just it shows you that there's gotta be a better way, right?
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, then you're you're an ideas guy.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: What's what would be a better way?
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: I think there's gotta be it's this is gonna be the sort of the rebundling of uh of you know essentially what cable TV was before.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cable TV, you knew okay, there's an NFL game on, you just look and you figure out where the NFL game is, you can search, you know.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: So it's a question of who's gonna create that you know, that interface or that portal or whatever you want to call that single page that aggregates everything together for you.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: I know Amazon's trying to do this, Roku is trying to do this, Google is trying to do this, Apple TV is trying to do this.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of places that are even even the cable channels now are trying to do this, but there's gonna be eventually a single standard interface where you can actually find this stuff.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: And right now that's just there's just too many different things to to search and find.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, that's that's good because I'm telling you, I I don't know.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: And as it relates to the NFL, um I'm committed to the to the uh to the Sunday ticket.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: And then between the Sunday ticket and Netflix and Amazon and the networks, you basically get it all.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Even though I still spend some elements covering the Cowboys, I like to watch different players and different games, and I'm not even a gambler.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: And so I just like having the option of, you know, because I don't, you know, when I I don't want the crappy game sometimes that they send to your area.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: So I want to watch what I want to watch because I'm like that.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Uh and so I'm just committed to um, you know, everybody's got hobbies, and so watching NFL football is a hobby.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: So I spend however much it is, eleven hundred dollars a year watching NFL football.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Because I like to do it.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: So you know, you know what's kind of got it solved as I think about it?
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Uh I have the uh I have MLB.tv.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: And so that basically means I can get every game.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: It's like the equivalent of Sunday ticket.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: I can get every game, uh, with the exception of ones that are in my local.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: I can't get my, you know, I can't the Yankees or the Mets game.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: But what MLB TV did this year is if I want to watch the uh Yankees game through MLB TV, yeah, it verifies that I have yes, which is the local uh and I can actually get yes, and I can so for me to find the MLB games, I just go on the M MLB app and I can find any game and I can watch the Yankees game because I've authenticated that I can watch on yes, and I can you know watch on uh you know that and that so that to me kind of solves it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: So the question is whether or not well, maybe maybe the NFL becomes the aggregator of that.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Maybe the NBA becomes the aggregator of those games, you know.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, and if as long as you verify that you got Amazon or whatever, yeah, yeah, maybe that's the way to do it.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: You can just uh go to the ticket and click on the game, yeah.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Because MLB TV, I know there's not a lot of people who watch a lot of baseball necessarily.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: That's a very watching.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: But it's it that's a very local market business, you know, local market viewership.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: But the MLD MLB TV is one of the best, you know, the best uh video apps out there.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and if you're interested in baseball, it's fantastic.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, but so I think something like that will eventually solve the problem, but you gotta be able to just find it in one place.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: I want to search for I don't I want to search for I want to watch an NFL game.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: I should just be able to find one place and say, oh, that game's on Amazon today, or I want to watch an NBA playoff game.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, that game is on uh, you know, whatever it's on.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: You know what else drives me nuts?
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you what drives me nuts.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: What drives you nuts, my friend?
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Makes me crazy, right?
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: When the games were on, all the games were on cable, right?
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, oh man, I want to watch a game on CBS or uh that's on at the same time as uh uh Fox, let's say.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: I can just kind of click back and forth between the two very easily.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: But if there's a game on a let's say it's on CBS and on Amazon at the same time.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, you're screwed.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: I can't do that.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Drives me crazy.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: You gotta have multiple TVs.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: But the point is it's so consumer unfriendly.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: So that's why I think it's there's gonna be a single aggregation point where you can do like you do on YouTube where you can watch side by side or quarters.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And you YouTube TV within the gar within the the walled garden of YouTube TV, you can do all that, and that's amazingly good.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Matter of fact, it's uh it's so good because I just discovered it.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: You've probably been able to do this for a long time.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: I just discovered it that you can, you know, they they'll put the four games up there and they give you 12 options, but if you don't like any of those options, you can create your own option.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: And so that's new, that's new as of like in in the last year, yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I was doing that the other day.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: I was like, I just want to watch these two games right here.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: I don't care about you.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: And I I stumbled onto it.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: I said, Oh, well, there's a game changer right there.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: So I'm very, I'm very happy with that.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: Very, very pleased.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: You know where that you know where that works really well, not that you watch this either.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: That is so good for tennis, if you want to watch, you know, what like the early rounds of tennis and you want to get some multiple matches going on, it's so good for tennis.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: I can see that.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, bottom line for me, I'm committed to paying whatever it is to watch the NFL.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: And so while it may be a pain in the butt, all these different places where you find games, I'm just gonna swipe the credit card or Apple card and pay for it.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: But but bottom line for me is like everything else in life, all I know is that it's gonna cost me more in the long run.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And I don't see any end to that, only end to that, uh, end of that, and end of that in sight, rather.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: And I really want to solve the problem.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: How do I switch between an Amazon or a Netflix game and a game that's in like a cable TV or YouTube system?
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: That's the thing I want to figure out.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Um, well, moving on to I sent my son, who's a junior at Ohio State, I sent him a text the other day that showed how much his fellow students were making playing football.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: And I said, How do you feel about this?
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: And he looked at it and said, Oh my god, I can't believe these guys are making this much money.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: And then he goes, and they're all younger than me.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: I go, That should serve as motivation, young man.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: So you know, I uh there's a funny story.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Uh years ago, I was uh I went to graduate school.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Is that the funny story?
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Uh well, the funny story is that I went to graduate school.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: It's pretty pretty hilarious, but uh, but aside from that, uh I was you know, I was in graduate school, and one of the guys I went to school with was a uh University of Virginia grad, right?
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And he was talking about the School of Arts and Sciences showed the average salary of people who graduated from the Arts and Sciences College, you know, right?
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And the average salary was like so completely out of whack, it was like$150,000.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: That's because Ralph Sampson graduated that year, you know, and his salary was included, right?
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: So I mean, they should have been ashamed of themselves today.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Um lots of college football teams, not just Ohio State, spending big money on their rosters.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: Lots of big money on their rosters.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Um well now you had an interesting theory.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Like Texas is spending the most, but you say you don't is Texas spending the most?
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: So you got three teams from Texas in the top 10.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Texas is the most, uh spends 47.9 million.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Uh Texas AM is seventh at 38.9 million, and Texas Tech is uh 10th at 36.3.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Now the interesting thing about that is Texas and Texas AM each have endowments that are in the billions.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: Like they they they have more, they're just worth money.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: So I don't know why Texas AM is lagging$10 million behind Texas.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Um Texas Tech, what I like about them is they had just a couple of undergrads who struck oil and they said, you know what?
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: We have so much money now that we're going to make our sports teams good.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: And the thing I like about them is for them, it's not just football.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: They went out and got, I forget her name, but I watched your pitch the other day, the softball player, and they they gave her a million-dollar deal.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, right, right, right.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's it is, but but the thing is that the college football programs that are gonna do the best in the future are the ones that have the wealthiest alumni, or at least the alumni who are willing to spend money on the sports programs, you know, and it's so it's not surprising that three of the top ten most expensive college football rosters are from teams from Texas where there's big oil money, you know?
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And then you then you look and then look look at the other top schools.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: What I'm surprised by is there were only two Big Ten schools in the top 10 in spending, and that's uh Ohio State's third and Oregon is fifth.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then uh so so I I I've been under the thought that the Big Ten schools have so much money and they have such a huge alumni base that they are they would be the ones who would spend the most money.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Now, this may be something unique to this year.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: It's probably interesting to look at this over a number of years, but yeah, I think so.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's kind of what I feels like to me.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: You know, Miami is a very small private school, they got like 15,000 students.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Uh Duke.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: I I don't I actually don't know the undergrad number, but but Miami is an incredibly wealthy uh has an incredibly wealthy alumni base.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: You know, it's clearly because they have$44 million wealth.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: It's a very wealthy alumni base.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, but then you have which I found interesting is LSU was fourth and Alabama was eighth, and Tennessee was ninth.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: That surprised me that those schools were that high because their their alumni bases, well, they're huge football programs.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Their alumni, you the the the wealth of their alumni are relatively less than the wealth of some of the bigger schools.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: I'm a little surprised by Tennessee, but you know, at Alabama, man, um I think it's the I think it's the civic pride and the school pride where you know we may we may not huh?
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Nothing else to spend money on in Alabama.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm saying, right?
- 28:26unknown: Right.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: This is it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, we put some money going to Talla Dave, but this is it for the most part.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: And so I mean, I think that's why Alabama will continue to be up there as long as they're winning, and if for some reason they dip, then you know I can see the money drying up as they dip.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: You know, LSU got a boost because Lane Kiffin went, and he was like, I need this to compete.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: And you know, some like Lane, like LSU, will they continue because LS Louisiana is not a rich state.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Will they continue to fund it at this level if you're not winning national championships?
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: And the thing about it is, man, not at you know, before when people were cheating, you had an unfair advantage.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Not at everybody's paying.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think it's just one more and more and more parody.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: And then I agree with that.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: A lot of teams will be able to compete.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I think what what's gonna happen is, yes, I think that's true.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: I think we need to look at this over like the next, you know, 10 to 15 years, and I think you'll see a more of a pattern that there are the the wet the schools that are bigger and with a wealthier alumni basis are gonna have a sustained, uh, you know, sustained excellence over time in terms of the football programs.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: You may have programs that you know have you know have a one-off spending or or there's unique circumstances.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: But the school that the school that I think is very interesting in here is uh there's six schools that spend$40 million or more.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Uh one of those schools is Notre Dame.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: They're at number six.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: That that's a huge advantage that Notre Dame has.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: They're independent, um, they're getting special treatment in the college football playoff, and it's a wealthy, wealthy uh alumni base, and it's a large school.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: And I think that's a very interesting, and and I think they have I think they have one of the top coaches in in Notre Dame.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, I think I think Notre Dame is about to be here for the for the long haul.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so Notre Dame looks so as I look at these schools in the top 10, which schools do I think are sustainable in the top 10 for a long term?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: I think Texas is, I think Ohio State is.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: I think Oregon is because they have a very aggressive number of alumni that are in the Nike money, and then Nike money, exactly.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Um, I think Notre Dame is, right?
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: And then probably Texas AM and Texas Tech.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: But I don't think like Miami's gonna be sustainable.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: I don't think LSU is, uh, I don't think Alabama is, and I don't think Tennessee is.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: I just don't.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Well, I think um sustainable is an interesting word.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: I think it uh I think it depends on what kind of success that they have.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: You know, are you like you're not going to win a national championship every year?
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: You know, are you going a couple rounds deep in the tournament?
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Or because now it's gonna be, you know, the well, you know, and maybe we'll talk about this next week.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: You know, is the end is it is a college football tournament going to going to 12 or is it going to 16 or is it going bigger?
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, because if it stays at 16, which I think is okay.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you're going to expand 16's alright.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Um what if we're we're at what?
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: We're at 12 now, right?
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'd prefer to keep it at 12.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Well, actually, I like 16 for him for this reason.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: I don't like buys anymore.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Like outside of Indiana, every team that has a buyers lost.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're not playing in 40 days.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: You play a team that just played last week.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: And, you know, again, Indiana was clearly the best team this year.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: But outside of them, even if it takes you a half to get back in it, well, shoot, that's a half.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: It's a half against a good team.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: That's you're not gonna get in.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: 16, that means everybody's playing everybody, and so I think that's a lot better, and you'll get a lot better results.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Uh but I but I also think you play 16, but you if you do that, I think you eliminate the conference championship games, and I think you start playing, you know, a week or maybe 10 days after the end of the regular season, or after the well, you get a truer result if you do that, yeah.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: You or after the Army Navy game, you know.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I like that.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I think they're getting rid of conference championship games because, and we talked about it last year.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: That they do you don't want a championship game to do you more harm than it does good, and that's what it was doing.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Whether you want it, okay.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: Now we want it, now we get a bunch of time off, or I mean it's just a lot of moving parts to it.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so you know, it's it seems like it's a bad idea.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I think that those are the the a lot of the college conferences are are talking about eliminating those games, but I think that's gonna go in lockstep with the expansion of the uh college football playoff.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: You needed them in the past, you don't need them now.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: You needed them, but now you don't need them because it's much like the NCAA basketball tournament.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: It doesn't really matter if you win the tournament, you get the number one seed, and now you didn't win the tournament, so you go on the number two or the number three seed.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: It doesn't matter.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: No, you're in the tournament that really matters.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: So and you're gonna have to play all the big boys sooner or later anyway.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: So what difference does it make?
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: And and now you got 76 teams, that's insane.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: It's insane.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, you know, so basically, if you have a 500 record and you're in a big conference, you're gonna make the NCAA tournament.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: And and no one's gonna watch those first round games, and no one's really gonna watch until probably Well, it'll be interesting how they to see how they set it up.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Will they have more on campus games instead of uh because that would make it interesting?
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: You know, as opposed to having you know four teams come down here to Dallas that nobody cares about, you know.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: So maybe you play the first couple rounds like the NIT at home gyms.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: And that's good.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: That would be all right.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Well, it's it but that's the thing.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: If if the college football playoff expanded to 16 teams, and there were eight, you know, eight games at the respective, you know, you know, the fur with the one through eight seeds all had home games, that that would be good.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: That would be that would be, I think, well, that would be interesting.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: You know, and maybe maybe you do that for the first two rounds.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: It's the home field advantage, and then and then maybe in the final, you know, in the final, you know, the semifinals in the final, you uh you give it the bulls.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: No, I I think that would be good because not that they care, would also save people some money.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: You know, nobody out of only rich people, and I'm not rich, only rich people can be like, oh, we're gonna go see my kid play.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: If you had Ohio State, oh, we're gonna go see him play in in uh Phoenix for one game, and then we'll see him in Atlanta for the second game, and then we'll go see him in a championship game in LA.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Most people ain't got that kind of money.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: No, I mean it's it's crazy.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm still amazed at how many people actually do travel for these games, you know?
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, because I'm not one of them.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Neither am I.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: I remember I was in uh LA, my daughter's in uh college in Los Angeles, and I was in LA for a weekend, and I happened to stay in a hotel that I normally just sort of randomly stayed at for whatever I couldn't remember why anymore.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: And uh everybody in the lobby was wearing either uh an Eagles jersey or a Raiders jersey, I think.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: I can't remember which team.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: And almost everybody there was traveling to go watch to go watch.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: I can't remember who who was.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: I think they were both, maybe they were both playing in LA that weekend.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: I I don't remember, but it was it was remarkable the number of people who had traveled to watch an NFL game.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Wow, yeah, which is amazing.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: So it's um yeah, I think uh I'm I'm with you.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: I can see Miami dipping real quick.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: Um, I think LSU is really competitive.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: They might dip, but I can see them being in top 10.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: And then Texas Tech, because that's just two people's money, you just never know how they're money.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Or, you know, they could be one of those situations where they just get mad, and because it's two people, they just be like, Yeah, nah, we're we're pulling our money.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: It's like it's like a business that has one large customer, and that large customer goes away, and all of a sudden you're like, What happened to my business?
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: You know, oh, you mean like me five years ago?
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Well, at least you had a large customer, that's a good thing.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, uh bottom line for me, uh, I think it's going to be really interesting to see who stays and who goes, but I believe Texas is gonna be at the top in terms of money spent on a roster for a long time.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but uh bottom line for me, uh you're gonna start to see uh a pooling of probably five or six schools that are gonna be consistently at the top, and that is gonna include, I agree, Texas is gonna be one, Notre Dame is gonna be one, uh, and uh for sure Ohio State.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: And then I think you'll start to see some other big schools with larger and wealthier alumni bases quietly trickle in.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: And those are gonna be the top football schools for for many years to come until the rules change again.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: And uh let's move to our favorite time of the hour.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: It's Buckeye Top Time, Buckeye banter.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: Joe Bucks.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: I'm excited.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: I'm excited.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: You know, you know the the news out there that I saw black jerseys making a comeback this year.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: It seemed like we wore them fairly frequently, but uh I guess we haven't.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Not for a while.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: Not for a while.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: I was a big nah.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Let me let me put it like this, because I have some friends who disagree.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Like I have, you know, I live in Dallas, and so I have several, several, several friends uh who are huge longhorns, hook them, that kind of thing.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: And they are aghast at a third uniform.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: They're like, we wear burnt orange, or we wear the tidy whites.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: That's how we did that.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: That's what they call the tidy whitest.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: We wear burnt orange or the tidy whites.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: We don't want no all burnt orange, we don't want no black.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: We got we are classy.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: We got two uniforms, and that's that's now it's interesting because A and M will switch it up on you.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: They got three or four looks.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: Um I really I can take the Ohio State white uniforms, I can take them or leave them.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: But I tell you, man, when you put that scarlet on with the gray pants or the silver pants or whatever we're calling, that's a good look.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: That's a classic look.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: Um, but I like the I like the all black too.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well that's when they got the red buckeye leaves on a helmet.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: That's pretty nice, man.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: That's pretty nice.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: But I'm a black guy.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm a black guy, but then I'm also wearing I like black.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: So I'm partial to it.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: Matter of fact, I have an all-black, I have on a black outfit right now, black shorts and shirt.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: So do I.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: But I have my Cincinnati Reds, uh, my big red machine uh sweatshirt.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so but they look good in the all black, so I'm down.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: I'm down with that.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: So, so I think the um, so the highest last, I'm just reading the our former employer, the Columbus Dispatch, reading a Columbus Dispatch story that says the uniforms were last worn in 2022, so it's four years ago.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: I would have never guessed it'd been that long.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and um I see uh are you a fan of the all red?
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Like they were against Minnesota.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: I'm not.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: I'm not really a fan of it.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so so I think that the all black can do a couple of things for Ohio State.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: One is I think they'll look better on TV if they're accented, you know, with the red, the red accent, I think it's actually gonna be a better look on television.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, but number two is you know, buckeyes need a level of toughness, you know, they need a persona.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: Does the black sort of indicate some well that may mean it may be completely meaningless, but you know, it's like it's like the whole raider, uh, the raiders mystique.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: It's they're they're wearing black, you know.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Let me ask you this other one.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, did you like the all gray?
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought they were okay.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, I I didn't mind the all-gray look.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: I didn't mind that at all.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: Uh it was a little different, but I think we I think we wore black numbers on it, so it kind of popped.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: I just remember those are the uniforms they had when it came back from however much they were dying to beat Penn State one year.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I thought that was a good look.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: So I guess my point is I don't mind the alternate uniforms.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't we seem like we wore all white one time, and I don't think that looked too bad either.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Every time I see the all-black uniforms, I just think of, and this may be my own hallucination.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: I all I can think of is JT Barrett, you know, the who was a quarterback for I think 13 years at Ohio State, uh, wearing the all-black uniform.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's my memory of of those uniforms.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: But I listen, I like them.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: I have Ohio State needs to have kind of, I think, a different level of toughness than they've had the last uh certainly last year.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe this will be helpful in that.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: What do I know?
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Uniforms ain't gonna do that, man.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: They get on that weight room and bust somebody upside down.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's exactly right.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you know, like like you know, like me, you know, I'm you know a huge bruiser.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, but it's but you know, but I think it's good.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: I think it's um, you know, I think it's good for the brand.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: I think it's good for Ohio State.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: It's another talking point.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: I think uh, you know, I'm sure there's probably some research done that they're gonna sell more more merch and everything for sure.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: You know, no doubt, no doubt.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll definitely buy some all black Ohio State stuff, no question about it.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: Well, I have I actually have a lot of black uh sweatshirts and uh t-shirts and stuff like that.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: So I've I've been down with the uh with the black.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: You know what I like?
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: I like the classic Ohio State stuff, which is are the you know, the arch lettering just says Ohio State on it, you know, in red and in a gray or black background.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: That's that's what I think is the by far and away the best Ohio State merch.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's just fun to go to a relevant university.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: You know, my my son my son uh it's it's a running conversation we have from time to time.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: But you know, sometimes you'll meet somebody and just in conversation.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: So where do you go to school?
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, and when I I I've told him, I said, if somebody ever says a school that you don't know you're not familiar with, you just go, is that a small liberal art school?
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: And and normally you'll be right.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: I go, but you'll never have that problem.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: The only the only way you'll have that problem is um, you know, if you're talking to somebody who's not from the US.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and even then you might not have a problem.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: Well, it's it's it's amazing.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: I've worn Ohio State stuff all over the world, and I'm stopped all the time, everywhere, everywhere in the world, you know.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: You get the OH or you get the Go Bus?
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just people people stop me.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: I also wear, I'm also big on wearing uh USC stuff now too, because I my daughter is USC and I think it's you know, I I have a hard time doing it.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: I I have to, it's my daughter.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: I'm not opposed to it.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: I just have a hard time doing it.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: But I I wear USC.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: I wear USC stuff, and I'm stopped all the time for USC too, because the US C is a huge school, also.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: Right, you know, so yeah, but but yeah.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: That's one reason I shepherded it.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: That's one reason I separated him to Ohio State, so I wouldn't have to make these kinds of tough choices.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you don't want to wear the you know UNT uh jerseys, right?
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: UNT is per UNT is group of five, they're perfectly fine.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: They had a good quarterback, right, last year.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Hey man, their whole team followed the coach to Oklahoma State.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, is that right?
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't know.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Like their whole too deep is now at Oklahoma State.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: And that, I ain't gonna lie to you, that's a that's kind of a raggedy part of college football.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Like they had that great season, and the payoff for the great season is not only did our coach leave, yeah.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, we can live with that.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: We can live with our coach going to getting a better job.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: But he took the too deep with him.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what, but that's what Signetti did with the James Madison players, too.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: He took, he took, he took all the good James JMU players and brought them to Indiana.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: So that's uh that's today's college football, man.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: Uh bottom line for me, always bet on black.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me, I'm gonna have visions of JT Barrett all next year.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: That's that's all I know.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Bottom line on sports.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: I'm John Shaq Caleb.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: It's Jeremy Peak.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: We'll holler at you guys next week.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: All right, we'll see you guys later.
