- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. Well, look, Jets fans are
- 0:29Speaker 1: up in arms, obviously because this season has been such
- 0:32Speaker 1: a mess. And I think from ownership on down to
- 0:34Speaker 1: the guys working in the parking lot, they would tell
- 0:37Speaker 1: you that this was as disastrous a twenty twenty four
- 0:40Speaker 1: campaign as they could have possibly imagined, especially to go
- 0:43Speaker 1: back to Week one when there was so much excitement
- 0:45Speaker 1: and so much hype going into this team. Five years
- 0:48Speaker 1: is a long time for a general manager to be
- 0:51Speaker 1: employed and not make the playoffs. They weren't making the
- 0:54Speaker 1: playoffs again, I think on paper, if you look at it,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Joe Douglas's time had run its course. The question is
- 1:00Speaker 1: is he to blame for how this went down? And
- 1:02Speaker 1: should he be the one to fall on the sword here? Well,
- 1:05Speaker 1: that that doesn't matter.
- 1:07Speaker 2: He's gone. The owner's going to make the decisions.
- 1:09Speaker 3: There's a lot of revisionist history too on this, and
- 1:12Speaker 3: it's like, well, they shouldn't have gotten Rogers, or they
- 1:14Speaker 3: shouldn't have gone for Mike Williams.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Are they why do they go for Davonte? Guys?
- 1:18Speaker 3: They were all in on twenty twenty four, they were
- 1:20Speaker 3: all in the second they made some of those moves
- 1:24Speaker 3: and went after Rogers last year. So when you're all in,
- 1:27Speaker 3: you swing the bat. You keep on swinging the bat.
- 1:29Speaker 3: There's no in between. Now Sala's gone, Joe Douglas is gone.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think the original sin for Douglas is that he
- 1:36Speaker 3: never got a quarterback.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And it's very rare.
- 1:39Speaker 3: In this league that you get a chance to not
- 1:41Speaker 3: only inherit one that was a top three pick in
- 1:43Speaker 3: Sam Darnold, draft your own, which was Zach Wilson, and
- 1:47Speaker 3: then get the green light to go get Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:50Speaker 3: A lot of people online and a lot of reporters
- 1:52Speaker 3: we trust are like, yeah, but this guy brought in
- 1:54Speaker 3: such a roster with Sauce and Garrett Wilson and Jermaine
- 1:58Speaker 3: Johnson and look at all the young talent, and it's
- 2:00Speaker 3: like asking, you know, Mary Todd Lincoln, how is the play?
- 2:03Speaker 2: You need a quarterback?
- 2:04Speaker 4: Good?
- 2:05Speaker 2: You need a quarterback. And at the end of the day,
- 2:08Speaker 2: that's what's gonna do them in.
- 2:09Speaker 3: And now they're in this hole where Rogers might want
- 2:12Speaker 3: to come back. Rogers isn't saying I'm retiring at the
- 2:15Speaker 3: end of the season, and the Jets might.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Not want Rogers back.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It's gonna be a decision that they have to make
- 2:19Speaker 3: at the end of the season. Joe Douglas will be fine.
- 2:21Speaker 3: He's a scout and is a scout at his heart, like,
- 2:23Speaker 3: he'll be okay. He'll work for twenty years in this league,
- 2:26Speaker 3: either being a GM again or he'll be a personnel guy.
- 2:29Speaker 3: But after five and a half years of not sniffing
- 2:32Speaker 3: the playoffs, he's the one who's gonna take the fall here.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And to Ian Rappaport's point, the.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Jets knew this was happening Douglas having Douglas has not
- 2:39Speaker 3: been himself this year. He obviously was just finishing out
- 2:42Speaker 3: the string as it was. Let's everyone get a head
- 2:45Speaker 3: start on things. Joe can figure out what he's gonna
- 2:46Speaker 3: do the next six months of his life, and the
- 2:48Speaker 3: Jets can get a headstart and actually doing research without
- 2:50Speaker 3: doing it around his back on who might be their
- 2:53Speaker 3: next general manager coach. The definition of insanity. He's doing
- 2:55Speaker 3: the same thing over and over again and coming up
- 2:57Speaker 3: with the same results. And that's what the Jets have
- 2:58Speaker 3: been for the last twenty years and really since Woody
- 3:01Speaker 3: Johnson took over the team in the early two thousands.
- 3:03Speaker 3: They had a couple of brief years of Rex Ryan
- 3:05Speaker 3: football where they were great, and then it's been just
- 3:07Speaker 3: downtrodden since they have the longest playoff drought thirteen years.
- 3:10Speaker 2: They're not going back today. There was an interesting dynamic here.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Sala lost his job. I'll tell you. I told you
- 3:15Speaker 2: on the next morning.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Joe Douglas wasn't aware that Sala was getting fired that morning,
- 3:19Speaker 3: so he shut up to work.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And it's like, oh, your guy that you're arm in
- 3:22Speaker 2: arm with, Like he's.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Out of work too. So that list right there. Okay,
- 3:26Speaker 3: so it's Joe Douglas. That is Himie who's the president?
- 3:28Speaker 3: That is Christopher Johnson, the younger brother. That's Aaron Rodgers.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And that that's Woody Johnson too, is right. That's the
- 3:33Speaker 3: brain trust with Joe Douglas with an ex throom. Those
- 3:36Speaker 3: are the guys who are going to decide.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Now.
- 3:37Speaker 3: There's been a lot of talk in league circles that
- 3:40Speaker 3: maybe the Jets hire a president of football operations type.
- 3:43Speaker 3: You know in Detroit we talk about the Lions. Chris
- 3:45Speaker 3: Spielman came in and kind of overlooked things from this
- 3:49Speaker 3: president's role, but more of an ownership ally and a
- 3:52Speaker 3: bridge between ownership in the front office. Maybe that's possibility.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And I saw Gary Meyer suggested Curtis Martin for that job.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I've seen Chad Pennington's name mentioned. I've seen Anthony Beck's
- 4:00Speaker 3: name mentioned, who still works with the organization.
- 4:03Speaker 2: That's a possibility. That's more of like a figurehead position.
- 4:06Speaker 2: You need a coach, You need a coach.
- 4:09Speaker 3: GMS in this league, they'll come and go.
- 4:10Speaker 2: They need a coach.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And I think the most important process here is going
- 4:14Speaker 3: to be a determining what to do with Rogers, and
- 4:17Speaker 3: if Rogers wants to come back, that is a very
- 4:19Speaker 3: interesting discussion to be had because he does not owe
- 4:21Speaker 3: any more guaranteed money. And then be the hiring of
- 4:24Speaker 3: the coach along with a general manager. But I don't
- 4:27Speaker 3: know if it's hey the GM makes a decision on
- 4:29Speaker 3: the coach here.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I think coach is so important in the league right now.
- 4:32Speaker 3: GM is almost secondary to who's going to be the
- 4:33Speaker 3: man calling the shots?
- 4:36Speaker 2: What's up everybody?
- 4:37Speaker 3: And we did the Coach of the Week award and
- 4:39Speaker 3: this week we're going down to the Big Easy where
- 4:41Speaker 3: the coach of the week is interim head coach for
- 4:44Speaker 3: the Saints, Darren Rizzi. Darren Rizzy, Saints won again, did
- 4:49Speaker 3: so in dramatic fashion. And you know the broadcasters last night,
- 4:53Speaker 3: they had a joke. It was Kenny Albert Jonathan Vilma
- 4:55Speaker 3: that maybe he's got a curse on opposing kickers because
- 4:58Speaker 3: young wig.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Kum is three of his four field goal attempts last week.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Dustin Hopkins was wide left on all three of his
- 5:04Speaker 3: field goal tries this week.
- 5:06Speaker 2: But also Rizzy was going.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Forward on fourth down time and time again on his
- 5:09Speaker 3: team and they were converting. Rizzy goes for it on
- 5:13Speaker 3: fourth and here's Kenny.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Albert with the call of the week.
- 5:17Speaker 5: He touchdown. That's why ball for you. That's Rizzy ball
- 5:28Speaker 5: for you. Okay, what are the kids saying? He's got
- 5:31Speaker 5: that risk, He's got something.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 5:35Speaker 3: This is where they were at in the last you know,
- 5:37Speaker 3: the losing strict with Dennis Allen. Suddenly the four and seven,
- 5:40Speaker 3: the Falcons can't buy a win. Panthers are the Panthers
- 5:43Speaker 3: and the Buccaneers have lost four street.
- 5:45Speaker 2: The Saints are alive again.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Darren Rizzy sixteen years Special teams coaches coach, with everyone
- 5:51Speaker 3: from Parcels to Dan Campbell right on down the list
- 5:55Speaker 3: is now the head coach of the Saints and they
- 5:58Speaker 3: are red hot, and Jamie he is my coach of
- 6:01Speaker 3: the week. We do the Fab five, which means we
- 6:13Speaker 3: reward the top five rookies.
- 6:15Speaker 2: As these guys are checking their phone. That's a rough one. Director,
- 6:20Speaker 2: Here we go. Maybe that's the rest of the audience too.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Let's get in now. Yeah, I got it.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I got it. That's the thought bubble in my head.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Off and here we go.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Let's get into the top five rookies of the week.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Number five, we're going to Tyresee Knight, the Seahawks defensive
- 6:37Speaker 3: lineman who was an absolute clog at the line for
- 6:40Speaker 3: a team that had Christian McCaffrey and a ton of
- 6:42Speaker 3: other offensive players trying to get going. Tyrese Knight ten tackles,
- 6:47Speaker 3: one quarterback hit. We led all rookies in tackles, and
- 6:51Speaker 3: you also went zero misstackles. Now, Mike McDonald was a
- 6:54Speaker 3: former linebackers coach. If he's gonna draft a linebacker, he
- 6:57Speaker 3: better be good Night was all over the field. If
- 7:00Speaker 3: you were watching this game on Sunday, he was a
- 7:03Speaker 3: heat seeking missile. Now we've talked a lot about the
- 7:07Speaker 3: Seattle defense in some of the big names over the
- 7:09Speaker 3: years that they've had with Weatherspoon and Woolen and of
- 7:12Speaker 3: course up front with Leonard Williams. The best player on
- 7:15Speaker 3: the defense on Sunday was this guy, Tyreese Knin.
- 7:17Speaker 2: His story is cool. It's from Lakeland, Florida.
- 7:19Speaker 3: But he was at Independence Community College and Independent Canvas.
- 7:22Speaker 2: If you're like, what is Independent? Remember Last Chance You?
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yes, sure, Last Chance You was that series on He
- 7:28Speaker 3: was a player on that team. He was on Last
- 7:30Speaker 3: Chance You, goes to UTEP and eventually is a fourth
- 7:33Speaker 3: round pick of the Seahawks. Tyrese Knight, we see you,
- 7:35Speaker 3: our only linebacker on the board. Number four best performances
- 7:40Speaker 3: from the rookies. Here is wide receiver Ladd McConkie for
- 7:43Speaker 3: the LA Chargers, second round pick out of Georgia. Now
- 7:47Speaker 3: this didn't necessarily start the way that Ladd wanted. If
- 7:50Speaker 3: you remember here, he makes this play and he goes
- 7:53Speaker 3: down on the sideline and it's like, oh no, the
- 7:56Speaker 3: Chargers just lose.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Ladd McConkie.
- 7:59Speaker 3: He went into the blue tent, the whole thing, and
- 8:02Speaker 3: then the guy comes back and has maybe his best
- 8:05Speaker 3: game as a dayla.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Ussa is gonna fight that injury.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Huge catches all over the field. Ladd was awesome in
- 8:13Speaker 3: this game.
- 8:14Speaker 2: And if you look at what he's done this season,
- 8:17Speaker 2: Lad McConkie.
- 8:18Speaker 3: In a rookie class that includes Marvin Harrison Junior and
- 8:21Speaker 3: Malik Neighbors and Roe Mdoonza, Lad mcconkey's up there as
- 8:26Speaker 3: one of the best rookie performers. We talked about it
- 8:29Speaker 3: like that good Lad good job produces.
- 8:31Speaker 2: That's good, Chris McClain, I see you, good, Lad Good.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Lad McLean is IRUs she knows as well. Forty three
- 8:38Speaker 3: catches rank some third, all these things third, and he's
- 8:41Speaker 3: the only player who's in the top three of all
- 8:44Speaker 3: the rookies in all of these categories. So Lad McConkie,
- 8:47Speaker 3: another big performance.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Including clutch catches number three. We're going to New England with.
- 8:53Speaker 3: A quarterback who actually lost in the game but was
- 8:56Speaker 3: awesome again. Hey Patriots fans, smile this morning. You got somebody.
- 9:01Speaker 3: You got a dude. His name is Drake May, and
- 9:03Speaker 3: Drake May was awesome on Sunday, a losing effort. Drake May, guys,
- 9:09Speaker 3: tossing the ball all over the yard and had one
- 9:12Speaker 3: here to the big offensive lineman. He played so well
- 9:15Speaker 3: that he had maybe the greatest offensive coach in the league,
- 9:19Speaker 3: talking as if he sees something in the future from
- 9:22Speaker 3: New England. Here's Sean mcvagh, the opposing coach, on Drake.
- 9:25Speaker 2: May after the game.
- 9:28Speaker 6: You know, you look at it and you can really
- 9:29Speaker 6: see his ability to create off schedule. I thought he
- 9:31Speaker 6: did a great job of being able to make plays
- 9:33Speaker 6: in the pocket today extend drives. I thought he was
- 9:35Speaker 6: patient taking some underneath checkdowns where guys were able to create.
- 9:38Speaker 6: We had some tighter coverages and he was able to
- 9:40Speaker 6: fit the ball into tight windows. So he looks like
- 9:43Speaker 6: a stud.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it does look like a stunt.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And take out the list of all the rookies since
- 9:49Speaker 3: nineteen ninety.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Let's go back to that far.
- 9:53Speaker 3: You're talking about guys who have had forty pass attempts
- 9:55Speaker 3: and still completed seventy percent of their passes.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Herbert did it three times.
- 9:59Speaker 3: The rookie Burrow did it, and that same COVID year,
- 10:01Speaker 3: Drake May's already done it twice. And he's the only
- 10:04Speaker 3: rookie to do it twice in his first six starts
- 10:06Speaker 3: New England.
- 10:07Speaker 2: You got someone. Congratulations.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Drake May's a stud, but he's not in our top two.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Our top two.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I had hard time with this because he had one
- 10:14Speaker 3: player on offense and one player on defense. Number two
- 10:17Speaker 3: player was last week's number one player, and he's a
- 10:21Speaker 3: guy who absolutely silenced Terry McLaurin.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Quineon Mitchell makes the list.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Quinon Mitchell, Eagles cornerback, is back on the board number one.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Last week he was number two. Terry McLaurin enter this
- 10:32Speaker 2: game as one of the best players in all of football,
- 10:35Speaker 2: a guy who was red hot.
- 10:36Speaker 3: He had zero catches, zero catches on twenty five different
- 10:42Speaker 3: routes that were passing routes. Quineyon Mitchell lined up against
- 10:46Speaker 3: Terry McLaurin and there was not a single catch to
- 10:48Speaker 3: be had.
- 10:49Speaker 2: But that's nothing new.
- 10:50Speaker 3: This is a guy Mitchell who has stopped everyone from
- 10:54Speaker 3: Mike Evans to Chris Olave and I love this before
- 10:57Speaker 3: the game and the starter jacket eight that's him and
- 10:59Speaker 3: Cooper dejen Now I knew they wore T shirts that
- 11:02Speaker 3: got all Twitter a buzz and everyone loved it on Instagram.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And the T shirts you can sell them you want.
- 11:07Speaker 2: This is just cool.
- 11:08Speaker 3: This is nineties Eagles throwback starter jackets. Shout out to
- 11:12Speaker 3: Reggie White, Shout out to Delight Jerome Brown, Shout out
- 11:15Speaker 3: to Clyde.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Simmons, Seth Joyner and the crew. Look at what this
- 11:18Speaker 2: guy is doing.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Quinnion Mitchell, the first defensive back taken in April's draft
- 11:25Speaker 3: and out of Toledo, has been an absolute game wrecker
- 11:30Speaker 3: in his first season in the NFL. He's number two
- 11:34Speaker 3: on our list, and yet he's not number one because
- 11:37Speaker 3: I couldn't go a different direction than this guy.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Bo Nicks, your first week is number one on the list.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Bot Knicks was sad station all on Sunday. Nicks went
- 11:49Speaker 2: twenty eight of thirty three.
- 11:51Speaker 3: That's eighty five percent completion percentage for three hundred and
- 11:55Speaker 3: seven passing yards. He threw four passing touchdowns, he had
- 11:59Speaker 3: no interceptions, and he threw a passer rating for oh
- 12:03Speaker 3: one hundred and forty five, which is off the charts.
- 12:06Speaker 3: This guy's the first rookie in NFL history to complete
- 12:09Speaker 3: eighty percent of his passes, have four passing touchdowns, and
- 12:12Speaker 3: three hundred or more passing yards in a game.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Performance, and yet my favorite bow Knicks pass, my favorite
- 12:18Speaker 3: one was not one of the big touchdown passes.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It was this one. Here.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Let's go to the broadcast and my favorite bow Knicks
- 12:27Speaker 3: to Courtland Sutton play of the afternoon.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Here's Nicks, a couple of pumps.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Now he's gonna run, floats it down to sun shut
- 12:35Speaker 4: ball for Courtland Sudden hugainst Day j Terrell. Two pumps
- 12:41Speaker 4: and a twenty three yard toss from Nicks to Sutton.
- 12:45Speaker 3: That play is so beautiful because it's a play action,
- 12:48Speaker 3: it's a scramble and then it's two pump fakes and
- 12:52Speaker 3: he completes the pass, drops it in the bucket. The
- 12:54Speaker 3: guy's amazing. He's having an incredible season. The Broncos are
- 12:58Speaker 3: in the thick of the playoff.
- 13:00Speaker 2: He was the.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Sixth quarterback taken in April's draft, the sixth quarterback taken,
- 13:05Speaker 3: but he is the first our list this week, let's
- 13:08Speaker 3: take a look at the top five rookies. There's a
- 13:11Speaker 3: lot of guys who didn't make this list. And I
- 13:13Speaker 3: know Brock Bauers wants to get in here, and I
- 13:15Speaker 3: know there's several different names that might have deserved it.
- 13:18Speaker 2: But We're going with these five.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Bo Nicks one, Quinnon Mitchell two, Drake May three, Ladi
- 13:25Speaker 3: mcconki Tyrese Knight. We see you, Braden Fisk, we know
- 13:28Speaker 3: you were awesome. Also, you didn't get on the list
- 13:30Speaker 3: this week. You've got the Eagles two rookies on defense
- 13:33Speaker 3: versus the Rams two rookies. They're playing Sunday night. Here's
- 13:35Speaker 3: my final five on the list. This is the fab
- 13:38Speaker 3: five from week eleven.
- 13:39Speaker 2: What you got, Jamie Peter.
- 13:41Speaker 3: If everyone was about to crown Jade Daniels halfway to
- 13:43Speaker 3: the season for offensive Rookie of the Year, can bo
- 13:46Speaker 3: Nicks come run in the second half?
- 13:47Speaker 2: Wow?
- 13:48Speaker 3: You better believe it, especially if the Broncos keep winning.
- 13:51Speaker 3: And I'll tell you something, Jamie, it could get interesting
- 13:54Speaker 3: if Drake May keeps on having these performances too. It's
- 13:57Speaker 3: a loaded rookie class of quarterbacks and Jaden Daniels has
- 14:01Speaker 3: not been crowned anything yet. See, we're not looking like
- 14:05Speaker 3: a Super Bowl championaier game, I think Russell Wilson went
- 14:08Speaker 3: two of seven in the red zone through a horrible interception.
- 14:11Speaker 2: The Ravens just happened to be worse. The Ravens have issues.
- 14:14Speaker 3: You watch those highlights, like all right, they got a
- 14:16Speaker 3: chance at the end.
- 14:16Speaker 2: To do it.
- 14:17Speaker 3: All the little things that the Ravens used to do right,
- 14:19Speaker 3: they're doing wrong, like Justin Tucker missing these kicks here.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Little things like that the fans don't see. But you
- 14:26Speaker 2: make decision choices too.
- 14:27Speaker 3: This is a close one score game. Throughout the game,
- 14:29Speaker 3: Derek Henry only touched the ball thirteen times all season.
- 14:32Speaker 3: They've been awful in the defensive backfield. This play here
- 14:35Speaker 3: like right off the face mask and then the two
- 14:38Speaker 3: point conversion. Kyle, you see agal Or screaming at someone beforehand.
- 14:42Speaker 2: This is after a timeoutur It looked like they're going
- 14:43Speaker 2: to do a jump pass. They didn't get a chance
- 14:45Speaker 2: to do it.
- 14:45Speaker 3: The Ravens didn't deserve to win this game, and they
- 14:48Speaker 3: don't deserve to be discussed like Super Bowl contenders when
- 14:52Speaker 3: they win and shootouts thirty six to thirty five against
- 14:55Speaker 3: the Bengals. We celebrate Lamar as the MVP, and we're
- 14:57Speaker 3: doing Steph Curry, you know, cutups and stuff. But they're
- 15:01Speaker 3: a mediocre team right now, they're seven and four, they're
- 15:03Speaker 3: in the mix. They'll play wild Card weekend right now.
- 15:06Speaker 3: And you'll see maybe they'll win around. But like I
- 15:09Speaker 3: can't come in this morning and be excited about the
- 15:12Speaker 3: Ravens and the Steelers. Steelers, that's a great win for them,
- 15:14Speaker 3: and they did it because that's how they do it.
- 15:16Speaker 3: The Ravens, though.
- 15:17Speaker 2: They are four losses, and those four losses, they do
- 15:19Speaker 2: not look great.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Waited on the bye week, Joe Shane was actually in
- 15:23Speaker 3: Colorado watching Shador Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes over the weekend.
- 15:28Speaker 3: On the bye week, Giants are one and five in
- 15:30Speaker 3: close games. They've gotten little to nothing from the quarterback position,
- 15:34Speaker 3: and Daniel Jones is not a second or third year guy,
