- 0:07The California Angels faced the Boston Red Sox at Fennway Park for a Monday night game on June 12, 1978.
- 0:13The Angels were an average team and were managed by Jim Fragosi, who had just replaced Dave Garcia earlier in the month.
- 0:19The Red Sox were managed by Don Zimmer and were off to a hot start with a 39-19 record and a 6-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East.

- 1:09This audio recording is from the Angels radio broadcast featuring announcers Dick Emberg and Al Wisk.
- 1:14The Angels were an average team and were off to a hot start with a 39-19 record and a 6-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East.
- 1:21Back in April, it was out for five or six weeks. He's been used as a designated hitter and a pitch hitter, but this is his first start at the back.
- 1:29Landro leads them from first base and Bob Ritz, the second baseman, steps in.
- 1:34From Long Beach, California, hitting 233, a hot-ass four-game hitting streak.
- 1:38Interestingly, the first pitch thrown by Lee was a big, soft balloon curveball.
- 1:43In field set for two, the pitch was thrown on road towards third, hopped it up with it, and went for a first base and makes a throw in time.
- 1:51Now the Angels first throw hunting on Bill Lee, and the thinking by the California Ball Club maybe that Lee has reportedly had trouble with his shoulder may be stiff,
- 2:01and if you're going to get to him, get to him before he loosens up.
- 2:05The Angels have Landro at second base, and Raymond Bostock, one of the hottest hitters in baseball this month of June, steps in.
- 2:12In the 11 games this month, Bostock, the left-handed hitting center fielder of the Angels, has 24 hits in 11 games, 24 for 49, nearly 500.
- 2:23The raises average up to 274 after a schismal April leave, almost went 0 for April.
- 2:28Left-hander against left-hander, Lee checks for under a second to pick slow curveball as in there.
- 2:34And I mean slow curveball.
- 2:38Bostock against the Red Sox, an appearance in Anaheim last weekend, was 8 for 13.
- 2:45Lee, Landro, dances off second base, spins the throw and throws in behind the bag by four steps, made the catch to take it out of center field.
- 2:56The wind is blowing toward that 37-foot green monster in left field, so get the ball up toward left, and you've got a chance for an easy home run tonight.
- 3:04A near-sellout crowd at Centway Park, they're averaging over 26,000 for home day.
- 3:09Lee, again checks Landro, big lead, and time called as Bostock steps out of the bat as Box Lee went through with his pitch, and it was another slow curveball.
- 3:19The Angels and Red Sox, two tired teams.
- 3:24The Red Sox arrived in Boston at 6.30 this morning from Seattle.
- 3:28The Angels didn't get to the hotel in Boston until about 9.30, and the bag's in the room about 11 o'clock after an all-night flight from Los Angeles.
- 3:36Foul back by Bostock on a one-handed swing, and it's going to.
- 3:41The key to Lee with all of his jump, as the players would refer to it, is to wait, try to hit the ball to the opposite field.
- 3:48Don't try to power it.
- 3:51They play Bostock to full.
- 3:54He has in front of the Marston left, led into right center, and Evans in straightaway right.
- 3:58Lee checks Landro, the two-strike pitch.
- 4:01Playing around balls of right field side, a shot up with it goes to the bag and time for the yard.
- 4:07So Bostock pulling the ball to the right side and strikes to George Scott on two convenient hunts.
- 4:13Two's on as Landro moves into third base.
- 4:17His left fielder Joe Rudy hitting 171, and a needy average for the talented left fielder of the Angels.
- 4:26It just hasn't been able to get that bat working for him.
- 4:30In fact, if Enfletch had his pitchers and it was figured that Rudy would devour the four-starters, he has only four hits all season, four for 27.
- 4:40That figure is out at 148. Chance to give the Angels the late top of the first inning.
- 4:45Landro at third, Lee from the full lineup gets his time from fifth to the fifth.
- 4:49Down low ball on as they turn that one over, they just hit low and outside.
- 4:53Ron Jackson, in contrast to Rudy, hitting over 400 against Fluffies as on deck.
- 5:01Rudy, a couple of home runs, ten runs batted in. He's always hit well here in Boston.
- 5:06Landro down the line at third, Lee pumps and here comes the pitch.
- 5:09Swing and a line drive left center field over his gas, racing, racing, and climbing all the way to the wall.
- 5:15Down flat back with the general left center field, runs rumors Rudy into second with a double, and the Angels lead at 1-0.
- 5:21Joe Rudy leans on that one and sends a line drive off the base of the wall beyond the scoreboard, inserted into that 37-foot center left field.
- 5:32The Angels jump in front. It's an under and run as Landro Saifan-Skotir checks in from third base.
- 5:39Ron Jackson hitting.357, second best in the American League.
- 5:45Jackson is just a point behind Rod Carew of the Minnesota Twins, and that is still another story because Rod Carew in headlines,
- 5:53all of the sports pages of around the country, as Calvin Griffith of Minnesota says that he'll be trading him before the deadline burns the midnight.
- 6:01Jackson high ball one, Lee didn't like the goal.
- 6:04Word is that the Angels are one of three teams vying for Rod Carew's talent.
- 6:13Regardless, generally, it's the best hitter in baseball, and the great rumors don't end there.
- 6:19Hit by Lee, high blooper, very high and away to it all.
- 6:23Now we got a big thrill. Ted Workin was my idol as a kid, and I can recall tracking behind him down Michigan Avenue from the book Cadillac Hotel
- 6:33down at Ben Brick Stadium, trying to stay out of his presence but still close.
- 6:37Line drive, base hit left field, going to be a play-for-play. Here comes Rudy around third.
- 6:41So far, Yaz is going to be cut off, and Rudy holds it one day.
- 6:45Rod Jackson lines the field in the left center, but Yaz who plays the outfield like a shortstop,
- 6:55links over and in, field it on one half and flies to the plate, and John Machamel, the coach of third,
- 7:00wisely threw up the stop time for Joe Rudy. He would have been out by twenty-three.
- 7:04Jackson at bird base, bat back at all, playing insane, continues his knowledge hitting for the Angels.
- 7:11Here's Merv Ruslund, the designated hitter, batting 298, he's primarily against left-handed pitching.
- 7:18So the Angels in there, a double on the single, have a run-in in the first inning, runner to first and third,
- 7:23and Ruslund trying to keep it going.
- 7:29Lee set, and a pitch. High ball one, but to continue the point, Williams of course,
- 7:35regarded as the first man to hit Rich Sewell's main blooper ball, where he's the pitch that he threw for a home run,
- 7:42and he connected in the 1946 All-Star game right here in Senway Park.
- 7:46One of the storied moments in baseball. The pitch, Rettman takes a strike, low curve ball, one and one.
- 7:53That wasn't the blooper, too, but plenty taking off it.
- 7:57Bill Lee, 31 years of age, former USC All-American, he is now the all-time Boston Red Sox record holder
- 8:06for games up here at the left-handers. This is his 306th game in Boston, often a graveyard for the left-handers.
- 8:13The pitch, low and outside, is defended over, and the count is two and one.
- 8:17The Merv Ruslund, the veteran outfielder, designated hitter for the Angels.
- 8:21Outstanding athlete at Ball State University in Indiana.
- 8:26Played football and baseball. Jackson away at first base, Scott holding him on.
- 8:31Rudy down the line at third, a run on top of the first inning.
- 8:34Lee steps in, a two-run hit, low curve is high, three and one.
- 8:38So Lee's struggling a bit here on the first inning. Rettman backs out of the batter's box,
- 8:42checks with his third base coach, young Jim Fregelty, the 36-year-old manager of the Angels,
- 8:48youngest in those big leagues now, sends a sign to Matt Camero, who relays to Rettman, hitter-takes.
- 8:54Might be something that works with a runner at first base as well, three and one.
- 8:58They play Rettman straight away to go to first, and Jackson gets back.
- 9:01Lee has one of the best moves to first base.
- 9:04That was in his A move, Scott holding on to Jackson.
- 9:10Lee leaning on the right knee as he gets his time from Townsend fifth.
- 9:14And a three-one pitch inside, and the bases are loaded.
- 9:20Rettman to first base with a loss, forcing Jackson into second. Rudy a third.
- 9:26And the bullpen phone is ringing down in the Boston.
- 9:32Right center field, relief area, and a right-hander gets up and starts throwing in a hurry.
- 9:37Here's veteran Ron Fairley. The Angels with three key players injured.
- 9:42Three right-handed hitters that strapped a bit for the right-handed bat, and he hates coming to center way with us.
- 9:47The services are saying Don Baylor, who is second in the major leagues and home runs with 15,
- 9:51but Baylor's sideline with a hamstring ball.
- 9:54Carney Lansford, the brilliant young rookie third baseman, and his swing made the order for this ballpark.
- 10:00He's out for three weeks at least with a club injury.
- 10:03And it's very helpful for another right-hander to do the catchers out with a sore arm.
- 10:06So Fairley's in there for the Angels.
- 10:09Here's the pitch by Lee. It's in for a strike, a back ball on the inside corner.
- 10:14Right-hander Bob Stanley is the man loosening up for Boston.
- 10:18Fairley used almost exclusively against right-handed pitching.
- 10:22It's been up only eight times against southparks, and he's one for eight.
- 10:26Here's the pitch. Low with a breaking ball. It's one and one.
- 10:31Some of the photographers taking pictures of Fairley and Ted Williams.
- 10:35But Fairley needs only to stay active a couple more years and become a four-decade player, as was Williams.
- 10:43Right-hander, first in 40 years of age, weighs that wood back and forth.
- 10:47Bates is loaded to run in. The one-on-one pitch. Curveball hangs inside. Two and one.
- 10:53Still the man trying to help out, played on by a rough guess.
- 10:58I tell you, Lee is throwing soft, softly in.
- 11:02A couple of those pitches, you almost run up behind and pass them on their way up to home plate.
- 11:07Almost slow pitch. Two and one. Bates is full. The pitch. Curveball is in there.
- 11:12Fairley backing away from the plate. He threw that one a little harder.
- 11:16So two balls, two strikes. Jim Bregotti apologizing for having Fairley's name on it.
- 11:23Starting wide up lift. They're apologizing only in the man's 40 years of age.
- 11:28He played yesterday, then an all-night travel, very little sleep.
- 11:31They'd like to wreck him a day, but that's not possible with the injury.
- 11:35Rudy at third. Jackson at second. Rettman at first. All ready to rock.
- 11:38Two outs, two balls, two strikes to count. Lee kicks it. Here comes the pitch.
- 11:42Clean the line. Bates that right center field. Rudy scores. Here comes Jackson around third. He scores.
- 11:47Rettman goes to third on a chop single by Fairley, and the angels lead three to nothing.
- 11:55Now the apologizes there from Ron Fairley, as he drives a bullet past Jack Rohan.
- 12:01Right in the right center field, fast fielding by Lynn. He's down from rolling all the way to the wall.
- 12:08Angels with three runs at the top of the first of all the other.
- 12:13Rettman at third, Fairley, with his 19th and 20th runs batted into the season at first base.
- 12:19And Dave Schalk in a modest four-game hitting streak to batter.
- 12:22Way up on the handle of the bat, right-handed hitter. Lee delivers.
- 12:25Outside with a tailing fastball. Schalk getting a solid 291 for the angels.
- 12:31They play him a change of ball. Evans up a few steps in right field, quite shallow.
- 12:37Lee straights and the pitch.
- 12:40Butt it, scores third a good front, and a red and roll fair.
- 12:45It lands right on the far line and reviews the kick foul.
- 12:49The bases are loaded. Rettman could not score in that the front was right there on the third-day front about 20 feet from home plate.
- 12:58And if Rettman had tried to score, Siskill was hovering over the ball, would have picked it up and tagged him.
- 13:03Siskill was just waving a mini version of his 1975 World Series moment, where he stood here at home plate and waved his home run fair to beat Cincinnati in game six.
- 13:14It was more of a little gentle come on, now come on, as he just moved the fingers to both hands, bring it foul, but it didn't have much action on it, and rolled weakly right on the foul line and stopped for a base hit.
- 13:27So the angels hit around at a first inning as the bases loaded again, and Brian Downing, right-handed hitting catcher, steps in.
- 13:35So a free run home and a chance to really give Rettman a lead, swing and a miss at a true piece on Michael Lee.
- 13:45Bailey moves into second, Rettman is third, with shots at first to halo over every base.
- 13:51The angels threaten to blow it open in the first inning, can't get too many runs in Fenway, that's an old song.
- 13:58Lee rocks back and a pitch, low, one ball, one strike, Bob Stanley continues to throw in the bullpen, for the Boston Red Sox.
- 14:07The angels with an air, a walk, and four hits in the inning.
- 14:1331-year-old left-hander from the University of Southern California, Bill Lee, kicks the deal, high, a breaking ball, two and one, and Lee falls behind again.
- 14:22The angels hit, two balls and a strike, Lee has to throw strikes with a base that's full, and Brian Downing in the catbird seat.
- 14:29He likes this one, he's giving it a go.
- 14:32The outfield deep toward left, a pitch, drive, it just caught the outside corner, Downing thought it was two ball wide,
- 14:38walked across the place, kind of sculpted the dirt of a line that would mark the left-hander's hitters, that is, Bob.
- 14:47Two balls, two strikes, Downing with nine runs that it is, here comes the two, two, pitch,
- 14:53swinging a foul back out of play, that one up on the roof of Fenway.
- 14:56So talking about double decking, Fenway, from first to round to third, has some 8,000 seats.
- 15:02The capacity now is around 33 to 35 to minutes, depending on how many you can jam in the backs of the lower deck.
- 15:09There's multiple tie box sets, as you know, around first to third, almost packed again tonight.
- 15:17As Boston comes down from a successful throw pitch, two, two, pitch, swinging a high pop-up,
- 15:23out goes Brohamer, in comes Lynn, here comes Larry Golds, he's all the way down.
- 15:30Now the angels bat around at first, and a three-hundred run, four hits, four hits, three to three.
- 15:36Last of the first team that is nearly away, we'll see how Boston does.
- 15:40Bonham for the first inning, after a half-hitting, the angels three, the Red Sox against right-hander Tom Griffin, coming to the bench.
- 15:46Last of the first inning, right-hander Tom Griffin of the angels making his third start of the season.
- 15:52He is 0-2, a 3.50 Yare, is outing last time up, last Wednesday evening.
- 16:00In the second game of the doubleheader at the Oakland Panathena, what is that thinking performance?
- 16:04As he lost to someone, Matt Keough, VA's 1-0.
- 16:08Former National League rookie pitcher of the year, 1969, with a Houston Astros, this is Griffin's first year in the American League.
- 16:16And looking for his first American League victory, Ron Jackson at third,
- 16:21Keith Lindsey around the horn, has a shot, gets short, Bob Griffin, Bob Fairley on the right side,
- 16:27Rooney at left, Voskoc in center, and Ken Landrell on right.
- 16:30Brian Downey behind the plate, Griffin, with a free-humping lead, will face Rick Rolton, Fred Lind, and Jim Wright.
- 16:36Remember, these Red Sox have not lost to a Western Division team yet this year at home.
- 16:41Canada, and only four clubs have beaten them all season at Fedway, where they are 22-4.
- 16:47First pick to Rolton, very high ball one.
- 16:52Well, that's been home field defense. 22-4 for the Red Sox, and they've just completed a 5-3 road trip.
- 16:58Six full games ahead of the Yankees in the East. Griffin hits the field, ground ball to third, Jackson let the go under,
- 17:04and it's off, they hit. Rooney feels, gets it in, and Rolton's the boy, and they're on a face-hit.
- 17:11Ron Jackson playing with a bad back, and you can tell it on that play.
- 17:16He didn't get down on the ball, and right under it, a glove. Jackson normally makes that play.
- 17:20If he leaned to his left, Griffin gets the glove that low.
- 17:25Rolton, who I think is now a 10th grade game, is the board at first base, and here's Gwendolyn, the center fielder.
- 17:3226-year-old left-handed hitter from USC and El Monte, California, hitting 3-16.
- 17:38Mitched by Griffin. Back ball misses, down tie ball one.
- 17:42Well, after watching Bill Lee and all that slow, soft pitching that he offered the first inning,
- 17:48Griffin looks like the fastest man to ever hit the mound, by contrast.
- 17:52The pitch, back ball low enough, tie ball two.
- 17:55Molly Engel has the team through all night from the west coast to get here to Boston.
- 18:01Griffin advanced the team, and he was able to get here 20 times in a good night's sleep, so he's the one rested Engel.
- 18:09Bill Lee also allowed that play.
- 18:14He left the Boston club from Seattle a day early so that he might get a good night's rest here.
- 18:19Oh, Flynn. Good power, gets the ball to the right field well.
- 18:24The pitch, when a high pop-up off third, Gaffer and Downing to the Engel dugout.
- 18:29Right end's going to be back about four rows.
- 18:32Gaffer tie off the concrete floor and well back into the ground.
- 18:39The Engels left down. Excellent three-game series against the New York Yankees.
- 18:47They're trying an average of over 30,000 a game, and on a season now,
- 18:52they've averaged 20,580 hits at Amazons, Boston averaging 26,012 for their home base.
- 18:58Throw to first and back is Rolston.
- 19:00Jumie Cieski, former teammate of our three-game guest, Ted Williams,
- 19:04choking at first base, called him the Washington man in his playing days.
- 19:09Next, we have the Detroit Tigers, Eddie Yoch, coaches the third.
- 19:12They're following away three and one. So Griffin gets up the base into Wilson
- 19:17and falls behind Lynn three and one with Jim Wright,
- 19:20the Major League leader in home runs and RBI on deck.
- 19:27Three-nothing Engel, bottom of the first inning.
- 19:32Griffin sets the three-one-fifth, swinging a high fly ball to center field.
- 19:36Botsock waiting in position in deep center. He's got it and is one away.
- 19:42You can see that ball is carrying maybe another 10, 15 feet because of the wind.
- 19:45Botsock had a beat on it, and then he kept shifting back to his small set.
- 19:49The ball is in the hand is for Jim Wright.
- 19:53Right, the Zabrich has dipped down to 321,
- 20:01and he took the next of that in practice before the game tonight.
- 20:05He leads the majors with 19 homers, 54 runs batted in,
- 20:10American League leader in runs, hits, and flung percentage,
- 20:13and tied in triples with six.
- 20:15Squeezed and misses, going one.
- 20:17Good compact stroke for Wright.
- 20:19They have the tightest swing of anyone in the American League.
- 20:24Liking to Joe Lewis's famous six-inch right-hand front,
- 20:28they could destroy an opponent.
- 20:30Wright takes a very short swing, but such a strong man can hit it out anywhere.
- 20:36Just 25 years of age from Madison, South Carolina.
- 20:40Where to waste him, deep in the box, counting out to say something to Griffin who
- 20:44took over, catched the run of Wilson at first, barely holding in sight,
- 20:47off to your deeps, the pitch, low, a breaking ball, and it's one and one.
- 20:52Wright has been playing left field with the injury to Scott,
- 20:57and tonight the designated hitter was Scottie back at first base for Boston.
- 21:02Griffin, 6'3", 210 pounds from the San Fernando Valley, throws the first and
- 21:07rolls in the back.
- 21:09Griffin, second, squeeze over toward the back,
- 21:12Scott trying to come to hold best he can, but still hits,
- 21:16step up, a double play position, set swing, and it's low.
- 21:20Griffin's at eight, what's wrong with that one?
- 21:22Two balls and a strike.
- 21:26How about that for a plugging percentage for Wright, 6'38".
- 21:32Where's 14, a bright red and a red bull to the back of his Boston white.
- 21:36The two on deck, low again, three and one.
- 21:40Griffin's all behind left, three and one, and got him to fly to center.
- 21:44Now he's behind right, three and one, with Kyle Yosdremski on deck.
- 21:50No place to rest in his Boston batting order, the best hitting list in the
- 21:53American world.
- 21:55Number nine hitter, Hopkins, 262, 11 home runs.
- 21:58Going in a high pop-up, right side,
- 22:00Griffin waiting for it to come down as the edge is out on the grass,
- 22:03second base with Hazard, and it's two away.
- 22:06For a while, Griffin might have been wondering, will it come down?
- 22:08It was just that high, two gone, Yosdremski, the batter,
- 22:11goes right to far for a safety identification.
- 22:14This is a fourth place of the San Joaquin Valley, KOMG by Talia,
- 22:19and all of the 300 safety and safety on American Forces radio,
- 22:24three nothing angels, eight for almost 78.
- 22:46Talia Yosdremski, three nothing angels, bottom of the first inning,
- 22:50first pitch is high ball on.
- 22:52New ball thrown out to Tom Griffin, yes, hitting 290 this year,
- 22:58refusing to acknowledge his advancing years, still in great shape.
- 23:04Ten wheels that bat in the right hand and settles off the letters and
- 23:08a photo of Bert Rolton at back.
- 23:10Yes, has three home runs and 28 runs that have been.
- 23:13Now 38 years of age from Long Island, New York.
- 23:16The pitch, curve ball high, ball two, so Griffin behind the hitters,
- 23:20but getting away with it so far.
- 23:22Bill Lee did not, and the angels scored three as they hit around with
- 23:26a helpful for there in the top of the first inning.
- 23:29Griffin sent the pitch, going to shot the second way to Griffin,
- 23:32got the pitch, hit on, throws and gets him.
- 23:35Ball, handshot, grit, fortunately rolled only about eight feet away,
- 23:39was able to pounce on it and throw out, yes, at first base, 4-3.
- 23:44So the touch, no runs, one hit and one left as Skipper Don Zimmerman
- 23:50left right hand, linear three-one and yes, two holes and they all made out.
- 23:55After an inning, angels three, brought to nothing.
- 23:59The same cozy Fenway Park in Boston on a 70 degree evening,
- 24:0458% humidity, the breeze about 17 miles an hour toward the left field wall.
- 24:10Little chance of rain tonight, but 80% prediction of precipitation tomorrow.
- 24:16Bill Lee, shooting up with sound and fizz, will face the top of the angel order,
- 24:20Lambeau, Griffin, Vossack.
- 24:22One game played in the Major League this afternoon,
- 24:24Candle 6, Mark and Stanton, San Francisco, 7,231.
- 24:28Saw the Giants get a one hitter from Ed Hallicki as they shut out Montreal, one nothing.
- 24:33The Giants picked up only three hits off Steve Rogers of the X-Bow.
- 24:37Hallicki three and one the winner, Rogers seven and six the loser,
- 24:40Giants one, Montreal nothing.
- 24:44Seattle at Baltimore underway tonight and the Blanders failed to score top of the first inning.
- 24:48Landro takes a fast ball inside ball one.
- 24:51That's Colburn against Martinez.
- 24:54Solts against Moore, Minnesota, Toronto rain delay at the start.
- 24:58The pitch, a strike and a slider and it's one and one to Landro.
- 25:03He was safe on Goddard in the first inning that opened the gates for the angels to score their three runs.
- 25:09Milwaukee will be in Detroit tonight, Rodriguez for the Brewers out of the bullpenning against Noke Wilcox.
- 25:14Open New York, Texas, Kansas City, Cleveland and Chicago no report.
- 25:18The pitch, low curve high.
- 25:20Natchel Lake, St. Louis and Atlanta, they're in the second inning no score.
- 25:24A book of it for the Cods and Marlars for the Braves.
- 25:27Chicago, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Houston, New York and San Diego, the Dodgers, those for Philadelphia.
- 25:31There's a looping line of Burlson one handed to the big overscore strike.
- 25:36Landro, a looping line drive, caught by Burlson as the left-handed B didn't take the full lead and one handed it to his backhand side.
- 25:46Bobby Gritt mounted a third in for a timeout.
- 25:49Bobby Gritt.
- 25:52Point over here, 6-6, 9-9-4.
- 25:55Quick or not, go.
- 26:03First pitch to Gritt is second for a strike.
- 26:08Bobby just saved the last four hands.
- 26:11We're just getting three-counted back.
- 26:14A bomb and handled, lightly closed hands, Lee delivers that close service in there.
- 26:20A strike on Gritt. It has to be a pace and hitter against button and ability.
- 26:29Most of his pitches are above the batter's head somewhere during the trajectory from mound to plate.
- 26:36The pitch, inside, and he's doing that one about as hard as he can, a bat ball and Gritt fell back.
- 26:42What a weight is that ball, more spotty in his lead came to face.
- 26:50That's still well back for Gritt.
- 26:53The pump and a one-two delivery.
- 26:55High, two-and-two, Gritt leads the A-pill with 34-1.
- 27:01Simon Bogdak on deck.
- 27:04Three-nothing, A-pill claded.
- 27:06We're at the top of the second inning, one out, Bates is empty.
- 27:09We have a line drive, Berlton has his one-two.
- 27:15Now a line drive off the bat of Bobby Gritt, but right to the doorstop.
- 27:18Rick Berlton, thought he'd just about the bill of his camp.
- 27:21Simon Bogdak, the center fielder, bounce-out to the first base when George got unassisted his first time out.
- 27:29We mentioned Craig Roeber's, a trading deadline.
- 27:32The name to Lake is this Thursday night, midnight.
- 27:36And one of the rumors floating around involving the Angels, Nolan Ryan, down ball to George.
- 27:41Berlton's been a busy man, he picks up everyone in the second inning.
- 27:44Goes across the scott, hits three on the put-out.
- 27:47A one-two-three inning for the Angels, after one-and-a-half, it's the Angels three, Boston nothing.
- 27:54John Chiley, the fine organist here at Senway Park in Boston with a plain, it's a small world.
- 28:03And indeed we feel that every time we receive a good news, that we're able to share our broadcast with those of you listening.
- 28:10All corners of the globe, and we hope it is well with you.
- 28:14We salute our men and women.
- 28:17The United States Armed Forces, as well as many folks who are vacationing.
- 28:22Much to the day to Europe, and joining us on this baseball broadcast from Boston.
- 28:28Berlton fifth, and George Scott and Jack Brohamer will bat against Tom Griffin in the Boston second inning.
- 28:35Fifth, now 30, native of New Hampshire.
- 28:39Getting to 67, that's five-oh-one, and Mankiewicz batted in.
- 28:44Big right-handed batter, he and Joe Rudy, the Angels brass, the most deliberate hitters in the entire league in getting themselves better than batters.
- 28:51Berlton just settling in now, wide spread closed stands.
- 28:56Downing the outside, target the pitches too high, bow-on.
- 29:01Rudy playing right at the edge of the track in front of the scoreboard and left.
- 29:05Five-stop team in left-center.
- 29:07And Lambrough, a good distance back in straightaway right field.
- 29:14Griffin runs back to pitch, playing a pop-up, might be a play behind the play for Downing, flips the match away, comes back toward the box seat, and makes a fine running catch.
- 29:23One step from the fatted barrier, the box seat running toward the ankle back out of the third-day's eye.
- 29:29Downing, a huffling catcher, who plays his position at times like an infielder.
- 29:38The bowman, George Scott, steps in.
- 29:41Getting to 84, now 34 years of age, native of Greenville, Mississippi.
- 29:48He has brought not only a lot of long home runs to this league, but a whole new language, to pitch, back ball strike.
- 29:58Talk about throwing a heater, a back ball hitting a tater, and many other Scottism, third ball bent outside, what a run.
- 30:10Scott, handling both ends of his game so very well, he has 256 career home runs, he's won eight Golden Gloves.
- 30:20Injured at the start of this season, but healthy now.
- 30:22The pitch, twing, and a miss, as he took his mid-trip.
- 30:28Scott's power is to left and right center field.
- 30:33He is 420 to the center field wall and adjacent to the Boston bullpen out of deep right center, about 400 foot away center.
- 30:40Swing and a miss, takes a bad ball, strike three.
- 30:45What? Played off by a rough catcher saying that George Scott didn't swing it that way?
- 30:50And Downing can't believe that, and the Calvary man goes to two and two instead of strike three.
- 31:01And left, Shet the thing, that that ball was foul tipped by Scott, that's the only thing we can think of.
- 31:08Jim Tragulki has not come out of the angle dugout.
- 31:12And Downing continues to talk with the plate up by our guest.
- 31:15Scoreboard reads the ball in two strikes.
- 31:17Scott took a pretty good swing, not to be called out.
- 31:20They must have foul tipped it.
- 31:23That is one and two.
- 31:26Rippon rocks back and here it comes.
- 31:28Swing and a wide drive, big hit, left center field.
- 31:31Lanzel over to get it in right center.
- 31:33Swinton falls, gets up and gets his throw in.
- 31:35Scott holds it for a save with a second Boston hit.
- 31:42He had a pull-in out over Drixie's head.
- 31:45The matter is Jack Krohama, little left-handed hitting infielder, he's in the lineup because
- 31:51Gillie Remy, the second baseman for the Red Sox, has a really great ankle, maybe a 4 or 5 game.
- 31:58But Krohama has been doing a solid job anyway.
- 32:01He's got a 10 game hitting streak, that's his longest ever in the big laker and he's hitting 2.99.
- 32:07The pitch by Griffin is just outside ball one.
- 32:11Krohama wears number three on his back.
- 32:15Played out his option with a wide start, time with Boston.
- 32:21He's a Southern Californian from Huntington Beach.
- 32:24The pitch, swing and another wide drive, big hit by Gillie.
- 32:27There goes Scott in the second, Lanzel off to the ball, Scott's going to go to third.
- 32:30Swinton's been thrown at third base.
- 32:32He's whiffed it in the back, throws it away and Krohama holds it for a save.
- 32:37He whiffed it out, a land row throw hit him in the back and Scott Gambling makes it to third.
- 32:48Krohama has made it 11th great game and George Scott, not the speediest runner,
- 32:54gambled on land row ground and Lanzel threw a perfect one hopper to the third base with Ron Jackson.
- 33:01Scott is six back, went in the way, hit him in the back and it's down the way.
- 33:06Scott, that runner that first and third went out in the second and the tie runs up right in the four on a wide oven
- 33:13to make right handed head right fielder, out, out, to the right.
- 33:20Kevin, 13 home runs, 27 runs ran in him.
- 33:26And that left field ball that's so very close when he steps in there, takes a strike, a curve ball,
- 33:31and hits the outside corner.
- 33:36Scott and Ron Hammer with one hop in the box and second inning.
- 33:41Bailey anchored in the back, the end field looking for the level play, Kevin.
- 33:45And then it's a 287 hitter, the pitch, swing and a foul.
- 33:49Puts that one up on a roof about the best level behind home plate.
- 33:55It's a great ball to play Kevin. So many of the old timers feel as we do that they also never change that way.
- 34:02It's very special in light of a new modern stadium that seems so sterile.
- 34:07This one with its many angles and its short centers to pitch is 9-1-2.
- 34:12You're always going to game a 10-1.
- 34:16And the fans is knowledgeable of Minion baseball.
- 34:20And he's going to take his pickets now to bring him here to the Muppet Eye game and hit the seller.
- 34:28Griffin checks the runners for the third and the pitch.
- 34:30Swing and a foul, foul, foul, it'll be out of play as Evans falling a fastball away.
- 34:35Hits it in behind the back of the box and dugout.
- 34:40Bush-Hopson, 38th minute on deck.
- 34:43The likes of Hopson and Evans at the bottom of the Boston batting order give you an idea why the rest of us in first place.
- 34:50Evans has 13 home runs and Hopson 11th and they're hitting 8th and 9th.
- 34:56Got off third, from Amherst first, swing out the angles, here's the pitch.
- 35:00Look at that, oh, high five on the left field.
- 35:03The wind will help it and it's going and it's off.
- 35:21Right, Evans with his fourth home run, high five all and the wind just rolled that one into the string and left it in the field and it's a new ball game in three.
- 35:35Evans, a couple of pitches he couldn't call, got a high fastball over the plate and hit a high five ball.
- 35:42It's been out almost anywhere else but that's why it's so friendly and friendly for the right-handed hitters.
- 35:48As the wind carried it, Rudy just watched as it fell over his bat high up into that string.
- 35:55Just like that the game is even at three.
- 36:00Here's Bush-Hopson batting 262, the pitch, breaking ball for a strike on one.
- 36:07As a pitcher you just have to save yourself, I didn't make that bat a pitch but in this part you can't let him hit it high to left,
- 36:15it's simply over the wind, ball out the middle, backhand by Griggs behind second, he throws it out, five strikes.
- 36:22Ball is just fairly well.
- 36:24Now two outs in the second inning and the total is now even, three runs, four hits a tie.
- 36:31Rick Wilson singled under Jackson's glove, hit first time up.
- 36:36Second to the American Laker doubles with 15.
- 36:41So Hawthorne's close are getting 2.7 but his bat's getting heated up a bit, he's hit safely a six and a row and wouldn't admit to a good thinking bat ball.
- 36:50So the crowd got what they were asking for, the home run was two-man-eleven from Dwight Evans.
- 36:55A three-three tie, the pitch, turnball over but low, one and one.
- 37:01Brett Lennon's on deck. Griffin runs back and here's the pitch, high, a bat ball, two and one.
- 37:13Griffin mopping his brow, working it late for the angels, not accustomed to the humidity with a dry heat in California.
- 37:21It's not a bad night, pop up in his channel center, five-stock in, talk out, five-stock stop, man makes the catch,
- 37:28almost fell down, he put on the break running hard to realize the wind was staring that ball out.
- 37:33He slammed on the break and almost fell down.
- 37:36Griffin, they made his putting and made the catch.
- 37:39Red Sox three runs to tie, a three hit, no one left.
- 37:43After two, Boston three, the angels three.
- 37:47The Red Sox are home where they enjoy the dimensions of Fenway and have just hit their 69th team home run of the season,
- 37:55and they tie with Milwaukee, the best home run hitting team in the American League currently.
- 37:59And Bill Lee is back even at three-three as he warms up, he'll say still Rudy, Ron Jackson and Merv Gressma,
- 38:05the middle of the angel batting order in the top of the third inning.
- 38:08This is the Kenberg with Al Witt, Don Drysdale off on a time and will rejoin us tomorrow night,
- 38:13producer, engineer, Dick Nelson.
- 38:16Just to complete that note on a possible trade involving Nolan Ryan,
- 38:20the fire service report that the owner of the Texas Rangers, Brad Corbett, had flown from Arlington to Anaheim
- 38:28to visit with Angel General Manager, Bucky Bervese about a trade which would involve the Rangers and Angels.
- 38:34They would like very much to have an agent in Texas, Nolan Ryan.
- 38:37We hear anything, of course, you'll hear about it.
- 38:39Let's go to the third inning.
- 38:40Three-three, tie here now.
- 38:42Our deck and here's Rudy at the plate, they've seen Bill Lee in the Boston Red Sox.
- 38:45Lee holding the ball in front of his chest, looking for the side from Carl Spiskie.
- 38:49Now lines for the first pitch for Joe Rudy as the slow curve up high for a one.
- 38:54He's changing speed to watch this year and that's one reason that George Van Bergen,
- 39:00the new manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, says that he figures Bill Lee will be the big winner this year in the Boston Red Sox.
- 39:07We'll have to wait and see.
- 39:08He's back at seven and three.
- 39:10He winds at the pitch.
- 39:11Swing and a miss.
- 39:14Does Joe Rudy get the plate to count even one and one?
- 39:18Bill Lee has been bothered by shoulder problems ever since he got into that brawl in Yankee Stadium on May 20th, 1976.
- 39:26And he says that he still has some degree of discomfort in his shoulders as he pitches this year.
- 39:32He winds and the one more pitch to Rudy is in time.
- 39:35They count two and one to Joe.
- 39:38Of course, Lee was out for a couple of months after that injury.
- 39:42And that's on track at the 1976 season for him. He's hoping that 78 will be a different story.
- 39:51Making his third try with number 81, two one pitch, hangs high, three and one to Rudy.
- 39:59On Jackson, on Jack Jackson currently is the number two hitter in the American Lake for average behind Rod Carew and just barely behind Carew.
- 40:08The score is 368. Rudy gets the plate. He has the edge on Lee, three and one.
- 40:14The quarterback native on demand, 31 years old, six three, 205 pounds.
- 40:18He winds and the three one pitch to Rudy.
- 40:21Swing and a foul tap at the plate. Bounces into Joe Rudy.
- 40:24To the count goes to three and two.
- 40:27Bill Lee, right time against the Angels with a seven and four record.
- 40:35And last year appears to be getting on the track for Boston against everybody in the American League because in September he had a four and two mark.
- 40:45That smacks his entire win and loss total, five of the All-Star game, which results in four and two.
- 40:53Three two pitch to Rudy. Just outside ball four with a man called.
- 40:57So Rudy draws the walk from Bill Lee. That's the second walk issued by Lee.
- 41:02The leadoff man on into third. Here's Ron Jackson.
- 41:20Jackson is first time up with a single.
- 41:22The Angels going three times in the first inning. The Boston Red Sox matching it with a three run home run by Dwight Evans in their half of the second.
- 41:32So it's three three in Boston's Fenway Park. The Angels hitting in the top of the third.
- 41:37The big Jackson is outside and Paul Wanderer. Jackson getting three fifty-seven with three home runs and twenty-seven RBI.
- 41:48They also leave the Angels in doubles with him. The big daddy playing with the.
- 41:54Turn for the.
- 42:02So I.
- 42:04Have the play.
- 42:06I guess Billy.
- 42:08The U.S.
- 42:23The angels hoping that they were able to generate the momentum.
- 42:27At home before taking to the road. They have a long, long road trip in front of them.
- 42:34Four of the last six games and have three come back with them.
- 42:38Way inside of Jackson has to lift his foot out of the way to get out of the way.
- 42:44They got down two and two to Ron Jackson.
- 42:51The Angels.
- 42:54Step around the injuries.
- 42:56Say.
- 43:08An awkward.
- 43:21Rulers in the East of the vision. The Eagles a game and a half out of West.
- 43:25Trying to catch the open A.
- 43:28Starts over the first base.
- 43:30Allegedly throws to Big George Scott.
- 43:33And in plenty of time to get back to the back, Joe Rudy.
- 43:38Jackson up the play by hand. It is slightly closed.
- 43:41And three two-pitches and he goes.
- 43:43And a drive across.
- 43:48Jackson hits a fuller and they get swept out as well.
- 43:53And clears it right on the mound.
- 43:56And fires over the first base to George Scott.
- 43:58And Rudy was almost down to second base by the time the ball was returning to first.
- 44:03So a very quick shuffle boy.
- 44:05One three on the liner to Bill Lee.
- 44:08And the taunt over the first base to George Scott.
- 44:12So Joe Rudy doubled up.
- 44:14The base is closed for the Angels.
- 44:16That's where Bruckman in the third with two outs.
- 44:19Bruckman walks back in the first.
- 44:22Hitting two out of gate. One home run. Ten RBI.
- 44:26The line to the big just flow.
- 44:28Breaking ball inside. Ball one.
- 44:31First the D.H. replacing Don Baylor.
- 44:33And that back will be missed.
- 44:35And a short two game period in Fenway Park.
- 44:37Because Baylor is Taylor's name for Fenway.
- 44:41Down low. Two and oh.
- 44:45Don Baylor's dead full hitter.
- 44:48And he just tattooed that ball all night long.
- 44:52But Baylor with a hamstring full.
- 44:54And so he's going to be out.
- 44:56No telling how long. Hopefully just a couple of games.
- 44:59Playing a high chopper.
- 45:00That's off the glove of the third base for Houghton in the short left field.
- 45:04Making the turn to Bruckman. He'll hang on to just simply retrieve quickly and throws back to the infield.
- 45:09He'll be scored an air five on Butch Houghton.
- 45:13He tried to cut off the ball in front of Berlton.
- 45:15The short top of the red dot.
- 45:17But in doing so took his eye off the ball.
- 45:20The ball hit it off his glove.
- 45:22And to the left field.
- 45:24So an E five.
- 45:25And that is the second air of the game for the Red Sox.
- 45:28So a man home with two men off.
- 45:30And now Ron Bailey at the plate.
- 45:32Bailey is one for one.
- 45:34He singles the center.
- 45:35He has the first.
- 45:38And Bailey with that hit.
- 45:40One of the rare times he's had a chance to come up against left hand hitters this year.
- 45:44And a rare hit for him.
- 45:45He's hitting one twenty-five this year against left handers.
- 45:50Bailey taking advantage of the expertise of Dick Enberg's pre-game guest, Ed Williams.
- 45:56He and Ted were talking.
- 45:58Outside the Boston dugout five of the game.
- 46:01What else?
- 46:02Subject hitting.
- 46:05So Bailey left hander in the play.
- 46:08Down ball, Milley on the bar.
- 46:10Bending at the weight.
- 46:11Glove on his knee.
- 46:13The ball on the backhand.
- 46:15He sets the kick and the pitch.
- 46:17Back ball down low.
- 46:18Ball one.
- 46:21Bailey hitting with two outs.
- 46:22Runner at first base.
- 46:23That's Merv Rettman.
- 46:25That's Merv Rettman.
- 46:28The angels and the Boston Reds are tied in the third at three.
- 46:33Police set the right lift and the pitch.
- 46:35Swing at a bombing ball.
- 46:36Backing up to Scott at first.
- 46:37He dropped it but it's not too far from the back.
- 46:40So he just eggs it with his foot as he recovers.
- 46:42And the dive retired in the third.
- 46:45He goes out without a hit.
- 46:47In the half of the third.
- 46:49At the end of two and a half the score will make tied at three.
- 46:55That was Tomadick and the Fenway Park in Boston where the score is tied at three.
- 47:00The angels with three runs in their half of the first on four hits and one error.
- 47:05They still strand at three then.
- 47:07The Boston Reds are with their three in the second of the three run home run by Dwight Evanson
- 47:12which is 14 home runs of the year.
- 47:14And that took him up to 30 in the RBI mark.
- 47:17That's his number three in home runs in the American League this year.
- 47:21Fred Lynn leading off for Boston in the third.
- 47:23But Jim Reiss and Kyle Yatseski.
- 47:26Well that Boston Reds are trying to get the pace up there.
- 47:30Look at the talent they have.
- 47:31When they're helping for his running he's now going up to pitch a negative one.
- 47:35Scott is back in for Boston.
- 47:37He has missed an action.
- 47:39So when you look at that lineup with all the starters in there, breaking ball inside, ball one.
- 47:45Many people say two leadoff men and seven clean up hitters.
- 47:49And a not far wrong.
- 47:51Fred Lynn leading off for one on mid to the outside corner of the knees for a goal strike one and one.
- 47:58Lynn 319, over one in this game, seven home runs, 27 RBI.
- 48:04Left-hander against the right-hander on the mound for the Angels on Griffin who deals high, two and one.
- 48:12Lynn, a couple of stats on him.
- 48:15He likes to hit in Boston, likes to hit right-handers.
- 48:18Playing at a foul, play it along to the left side and back into the stands by 13-0.
- 48:23Look out two and two.
- 48:26Lynn's average in Boston last year is 313.
- 48:30You check his breakdown on home runs.
- 48:33You find he is two against left-handers but 16 against right-handers.
- 48:38And what for him was a tough five years.
- 48:40Two-two-fifth.
- 48:42Swung into bombing ball right side, blocked by Brich on the edge of the outfield grass and he throws him up.
- 48:47So Fred Lynn put away by Bob Brich.
- 48:50And here's Jim Wright.
- 48:52Jim Wright.
- 48:56Dwight Cox Brich in the first.
- 49:01Heading of the game, scoring a 321 average, number five in the American League.
- 49:07The ball category right up on top, 19 home runs, 54 RBI.
- 49:12The first pitch, breaking ball high, and the count is one and 0.
- 49:19Jim Wright, got barely reaching his premium years with a ball to Red Sox.
- 49:27Ball inside, the count's ill known.
- 49:30The Red Sox figured it for many years as he now enters his late 20s and early 30s.
- 49:36He will contribute 35 to 40 home runs at least a year.
- 49:41Over 100 RBI, that probably hits 325.
- 49:44Flaming a one hopper hits sharply to Brich.
- 49:47He has it and throws him up.
- 49:49So Bob Brich is taking care of the first two men.
- 49:52Up for the Boston Red Sox in the third.
- 49:54And here's Kyle Dziuski.
- 49:56Dziuski bounce top to Brich in the first to end Saturday.
- 50:01Kyle, very impressed by Boston this year, as well he could be, third first place by six games,
- 50:06airing today's action, 39 and 19, that's 20 games above 500.
- 50:13Dziuski at the plate, left hand hitter, holding that bet off his back shoulder,
- 50:18high and away with a fast ball by Griffin, 4-1.
- 50:23Kyle says this is the best Boston Red Sox team that he has seen.
- 50:30The one hopper, quick and a miss, one and one.
- 50:35Dziuski has had his cuts against the game, both in his career.
- 50:42His total 30 career home runs against California.
- 50:48Bob, low stance at the plate, the pitch, up high with a fast ball, 2-1 to Dziuski.
- 50:56Dziuski heads into this game with a hitting streak of four straights.
- 51:02Getting the two outs, he's last of the third.
- 51:05Fast ball, missed outside, three and one to Dziuski.
- 51:10Kyle, the first on deck.
- 51:14Tom Griffin looking for his first win as an angel, his first win in the American League.
- 51:18He's working in the tie game at three, in the third.
- 51:21Fast ball outside, ball forward, Dziuski rejects the bat to the fungal circle to the right of home plate.
- 51:28Goes down to first for the wash.
- 51:30For Griffin, that's the first free pass that he's issued this evening.
- 51:34And it brings up Carlton Fisk.
- 51:37Fisk in the second, foul out to his counterpart, Brian Downing.
- 51:43Hitting 267, five home runs at 19, RBI.
- 51:50Carlton visiting with relatives because the angels are in town.
- 51:55His brother-in-law is Rick Miller.
- 51:58Rick married to Carlton's sister, Janet.
- 52:01She'll spend a couple of weeks here in the Boston area and in New Hampshire visiting Carlton and her folks.
- 52:07Swing and a miss and a breaking ball served up by Griffin, one strike to Fisk.
- 52:15Fisk, a very dedicated hitter, if you go into the batting case, the batting practice, and listen to him from time to time,
- 52:21you'll hear him reciting verbal situations, game situations, man on first six, but a man on third with one out.
- 52:30And he'll go down on the whole list of them and try to react accordingly at home plate.
- 52:39Get the ball to the right side, Brian, get it in the air, get the runner on.
- 52:44So Fisk, a thinking man's player outside, and a count to Carlton, one and one.
- 52:52The Reds don't catch your hitting with two outs, a man on, that's Jastrinsky,
- 52:56issued a free pass, the first walk of the game by Griffin.
- 53:03And down the S. San Diego Padre pitcher on the mound, looking for the time from Downing,
- 53:07who sets the target for the talk over first base and they almost got Jastrinsky.
- 53:11He barely made it back with a dive, as if trying to reach the end of a boat dock
- 53:17and just barely getting on with his fingertips, that's how he was gripping the bat.
- 53:22Now Griffin just barely missed picking him off.
- 53:32Now down Griffin now, back on the rubber, setting his intentions to home plate.
- 53:36Again the time by Downing and the target swinging and a miss, breaking ball outside part of the plate.
- 53:42Waved at a miss by Carlton, Fisk is one and two as Griffin ends the edge.
- 53:50Outfield against Fisk, deep and around slightly toward left.
- 54:00Boston Reds on and the Angels, first game of a short two game series, they've been playing for another talk over the first base.
- 54:07And back in time, Carl Jastrinsky, one fairly covering at first, Bob Gritch over at second,
- 54:14the Angels have chalked it short and Jackson over at third.
- 54:18Downing behind the plate, time called quickly by home plate umpire Russ Getz, as it was requested by Carl Fisk.
- 54:26The Angels defense rounded out with Broody in left, Bob Dock in center, and Yung Semi Landrow in right.
- 54:35This now, close stand, Griffin fires over the first base and Jastrinsky back standing up.
- 54:47Again the set by Griffin, he works the plate, fast ball hangs high and the count, two and two to Carlton Fisk.
- 55:06So far the operator having some difficulty getting to the right count tonight.
- 55:10And the home plate umpire Getz holding up his hands was the correct indication.
- 55:14Another throw over the first base by Griffin, and again Jastrinsky back.
- 55:20A couple fans throwing him, but that's his job, keeping close.
- 55:28Now Fisk reestablishing himself at the plate.
- 55:31The two two-pick to the runner goes, swing and a miss strike three, and Carlton Fisk strikes out.
- 55:37So the sides are tied for the Boston Reds, talks in the food, no runs, no hits, no errors, and one man left.
- 55:42At the end of three in Fenway Park, three-three, Boston and California.
- 55:47Elvis Columbus, Dick Enver, Fenway Park, and Boston for the game is tied at three.
- 55:52The Reds talk, and the Californians lead, Boston three runs on four hits.
- 55:58The Angels ditto, three runs and four hits.
- 56:01And for the Halos, the man ahead for the fourth is Dave Chalk, Brian Downing,
- 56:05and top of the order is Kenny Landau that pays still leads.
- 56:13The Angels getting a chance to exchange greetings with their teammate, Jerry Remy, who unfortunately can't play in this game.
- 56:19He's going to be at least three more games with an ankle that's injured in Seattle.
- 56:26But Remy's very happy to be in Boston. He of course is a native of Massachusetts, and he feels right at home.
- 56:34Here in Boston, the Reds talk uniform in a pen and paper.
- 56:40Dave Chalk at the plate, the first pitch of breaking ball that they break off, strike one.
- 56:46Chalk, as if they play in five straight, bonneted his way on in the first,
- 56:52and he couldn't have rolled it with his hand, and he vetted.
- 56:55Guys, the bunnies went on again, it's a foul, and rolls off the catcher,
- 57:00and the fish can over toward the Boston Reds on dugout, so 0-2 on Chalk.
- 57:05Chalk laid it down the third base line, and first was found to urge the ball to go foul,
- 57:10but it stopped just barely on the line.
- 57:17And Chalk over his first base already by the time the momentum of the ball stopped.
- 57:22Playing a bombing ball into the third base with a hot, skinny gloves and guns, it's done.
- 57:29Dave Chalk put out 5-3 by Butch Hopkins and Brian Downing at the plate.
- 57:35White Forest Restation, identification. This is Angels Radio 78.
- 57:39This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 57:43It's the end of the long dawn.
- 57:59Angels and Red Sox 3-3, top of the fourth, one out, Brian Downing at the plate, all set to go against Bill Lee.
- 58:06The Angels with a barrage of hits yesterday back at Anaheim Stadium as they beat the Yankees 9-6.
- 58:1316 hits for the Angels, it looked like they were going to duplicate that in this game as they got off with 4 hits
- 58:19and 3 runs in the very first inning.
- 58:22Downing at the plate, takes 4-1.
- 58:25So it's the last two times around, but the second down, 1-2-3, and no action in the fifth either.
- 58:31There's a slow curve at the knees for a call strike from the inside corner.
- 58:37Downing at 238 hitters, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, all for one in this game, he's flying out to center.
- 58:44A tapper hits back to the pitcher, Bill Lee.
- 58:46Quirrells and Quirrells are in the first base, and there are two of the Angels in the fourth.
- 58:51A lead coming off the mound, a good feeling pitcher.
- 58:54The first base climb, the draw of that tapper, and the quarter-o and throw to George Scott at first.
- 59:14Two down for the Angels on the fourth, and the top of the order, up in my draw.
- 59:18Getting left hand hitting, gets the left hand early, swing and a bounding ball, left to Scott, just 50-mills over the first base.
- 59:24From the side, retired, 1-2-3.
- 59:27Angels go to the fourth, at the end of 3-1-2, 3-3.
- 59:31The Angels and Red Sox contrasted as they began the first game in a long series of games for 18.
- 59:37The Angels with their longest road trip of the year, 14 games for Boston Red Sox with their longest home stand of the year.
- 59:44It begins tonight in Fenway Park, George Scott at the right, and Jack Rowhammer and Dwight Evans in the left-hand half of the fourth.
- 59:52The game starts pretty good, a lead team with four hits so far tonight.
- 59:57The Red Sox scoring in spectacular, although narrow fashion.
- 1:00:02Dwight Evans with a three-munt home run into the net, a shot to Green Monster in left field here at Fenway Park.
- 1:00:08It was very much win 80, a very strong wind blowing out toward the Green Monster.
- 1:00:13George Scott takes down Rowam and outside for a one.
- 1:00:17A breeze at game time of 17 miles per hour, he's blowing so strong the big American flag is pulling at that black ball.
- 1:00:24It's wading in the breeze of black ball that's back for inside, and you can hear the reaction from the crowd here at Fenway.
- 1:00:302-0 to Scott.
- 1:00:33George Black here is one of the music incidents at Fenway because he hit a home run.
- 1:00:39There's just no question about it. He hit a home run to straightaway center field, but there's a perpendicular line that designates playing and a line drive.
- 1:00:47He hits, it's a short shot, that is his second hit.
- 1:00:51Up and up, two for two.
- 1:00:53Both of them line drive to right field.
- 1:00:56Scott last year against the Angels with a home run that was to the right of a perpendicular line which separates the Green Monster from a shorter wall about half the size of their 37-foot block.
- 1:01:08But the umpire didn't see it. Scott as he was circling the base was trying to tell him it's out.
- 1:01:13He was doing the umpire's cause, boiling his hand, it's out, he's pointing to the wall, and he was so busy trying to tell the umpire he was wrong he missed a chance inside the black hole run because the Angels didn't pursue it in the outfield.
- 1:01:24That happened last year.
- 1:01:25First pitch is in there at the knees, outside corner for a called strike one to Jack Grohamer.
- 1:01:31Grohamer a hot hitter.
- 1:01:3311 straight game, 2-9 coming in, one home run, and 10 RBIs, and he has the singles so far tonight.
- 1:01:41Back in the second, he and Scott brought home the three run home run by Evans.
- 1:01:46Swing in the mid, mid-time that pitch, and a count on two.
- 1:01:52Grohamer getting a chance to play because of the injury to Jerry Remmits.
- 1:01:57The strain of Remmits ankle, quite twisting of it.
- 1:02:04Jack Grohamer up against Tom Griffin, who kicks and delivers way outside and down the half to scramble off to his left of the sphere of effort.
- 1:02:17George Scott leading off the fourth with a single, game tied at three, Fenway Park in Boston, blasts up the fourth. Jack Grohamer has to play, the count one and two.
- 1:02:28Griffin sets and delivers outside, two and two.
- 1:02:33A check of the scoreboard, other actions today.
- 1:02:36In progress, Baltimore and Seattle, and the Orioles lead 3-0.
- 1:02:41They have played three.
- 1:02:42Eddie Murray with his tenth home run of the year, that's the difference in the game. It came in the third with two men off.
- 1:02:47So Murray a three run home run.
- 1:02:49Griffin fires over to first base, and George Scott, obviously no base-stealing threat.
- 1:02:55Now with all the luggage he's carrying, he's back in front of you, Scott.
- 1:02:59Two-two pitch, inside.
- 1:03:01Scott again fires, and it was not the second day Jim Groome was in.
- 1:03:08A score of a wild pitch.
- 1:03:12George Scott in scoring position represents a potential tie-breaking run in the fourth.
- 1:03:18Elsewhere on the make-up and scoreboard, Detroit leads to a walk in three to two at the end of a hitting and a half.
- 1:03:24There have already been three home runs in that game.
- 1:03:29Tom Griffin, who is victimized by Dwight Evans in the second for a three run blast, stands to the morrow.
- 1:03:36Check George Scott, the pitch, swinging a tamper foul to the right of home plate.
- 1:03:42Tom Fultz on Jack Brohamer on the red side.
- 1:03:46In the Detroit-Nowakie game, Tom with his ninth home run, Thompson his fifteenth, Thomas his thirteenth.
- 1:03:53Jason Thompson goes into a tie for second place with John Favis in the American League home run for a.
- 1:04:00Scott for the conservative league, now he has to drop to second.
- 1:04:06The three-two pitch by the left, the left is in the middle by Brohamer.
- 1:04:10The score of the play is cut off by Fairley, but Scott will run straight for third.
- 1:04:14The run is the first and third with nobody out in the fourth, and here comes Dwight Evans.
- 1:04:31For Devon, who's provided the fireworks for the walk tonight, a three run blast is 14th of the year, pulling his IVI total up to 30.
- 1:04:43Dwight Evans always seems to hit the easy way.
- 1:04:47He's a cap for his nine.
- 1:04:49Blast is 393, and it was two home runs against California.
- 1:04:53He has hit home runs in two consecutive games, and was 13th yesterday.
- 1:04:59Now with the fans shutting the rhythmical bars and Fenway Park,
- 1:05:02he backs off the mound and now wants to conference with his catcher, Ryan Downing.
- 1:05:07Nobody out, two men on, game tied 3-3, blast off the board.
- 1:05:12The American late for the New York Yankees has won an inning and a half with Oakland,
- 1:05:16so scoring that game is Kehoe against Gidry.
- 1:05:20Later on, a couple of jumpies hang those, Texas and Kansas City in Royal Stadium.
- 1:05:27And Cleveland will play Chicago, also the better off, the pitch, a 5-0-1 for the fastball.
- 1:05:36John Griffin in a jam, nobody out, two men on, four-setting, game tied at three.
- 1:05:43And Dwight Evans threw home runs off of him back in the second at the plate.
- 1:05:47Evans closed hands, right hand hitter, the pitch, Clinton hit a foul back to the screen.
- 1:05:53And a cap for him once.
- 1:05:56Evans with that home run, he did safely in six straight games.
- 1:06:02The Angels will try to turn the double play so they're a double play depth.
- 1:06:09They'll give up the run, Scott at third, Texas weighing it down low, and the Count's doing one.
- 1:06:18Back about three steps from the outfield grass to short is Dave Sharp.
- 1:06:22Rich about four steps from the grass over at second base, both pitched in toward the middle,
- 1:06:29and Evans will hit it on the ground and out in the air, the pitch, swing, and a checker
- 1:06:33playing off the facing of the fastball to your right.
- 1:06:36Gloves on the fly by Matt, actually, on the rebound.
- 1:06:39Two and two.
- 1:06:41The boomer, George Scott at third, Jack Brohammer at first.
- 1:06:49Fairly holding Brohammer at first.
- 1:06:51Jackson playing off one, and back of the bag at third.
- 1:06:55The middle of the infield double play depth.
- 1:06:59So Scott will score on the ground ball, hit toward the pitch.
- 1:07:04In there for a cold strike play, a slider by Tom Griffin caught Evans looking.
- 1:07:10The scales balancing as Evans with a three-run home run in the second,
- 1:07:15and now pound of flesh for Tom Griffin in the fourth as he catches Evans looking.
- 1:07:21That's the second strike out tonight for Griffin.
- 1:07:25That's only one out in the fourth for the Boston Red Sox,
- 1:07:28and it's pushed Optin for number nine here at the plate.
- 1:07:31Optin for the rebound, home run, the 35, high of the eyes,
- 1:07:34and he's hitting nine for this power-packed Boston Red Sox lineup.
- 1:07:39Holds that bat high, swing, and a miss, a high fastball served up by Griffin.
- 1:07:46Optin holding that bat high, almost a mirror image of Carl Jaczemski when he does that.
- 1:07:56Two-sixty-two to go on with those 11 home runs and 35 rebbies.
- 1:08:00Down low, one and one.
- 1:08:03Optin, the free swinger, while he'll pick up those home runs,
- 1:08:07will also pick up strikeouts.
- 1:08:09He's got a 12-record of 162 last year.
- 1:08:16Activity now in the Angel Bullpen, 10-grat-crowing, breaking ball,
- 1:08:20left side, two and one to Optin.
- 1:08:25Optin last year, 30 home runs for the Red Sox, 112 high of the eyes.
- 1:08:32Oddly enough, no home runs against the Angels.
- 1:08:37Let's take a look at just about everybody else in the American League.
- 1:08:41Two-one pitch, leg of a bounding call, into the short shot, he's got it.
- 1:08:46Throw ball to first base, got it, got it, everybody.
- 1:08:49Second short, Scott Storrs, and the Red Sox lead it 4-3.
- 1:08:57Now you have to feel for Tom Griffin.
- 1:08:59He did exactly what the pitcher wanted to do.
- 1:09:01He struck out Evans, with runners at first and third,
- 1:09:04and served up a made-order double play.
- 1:09:06Wait a shot, but in his haste to make two, he got none, and the Red Sox are in front.
- 1:09:15George Scott Storrs is 4-3, Optin.
- 1:09:19At second base, Jack Rohanford, Optin's statement first,
- 1:09:23to the air by Dave Schalks, at the top of the order up in Rick Berlton.
- 1:09:27Berlton one for two, waste of the play.
- 1:09:31Down the baller.
- 1:09:36The Red Sox with a great break.
- 1:09:38The Angles should have gotten out of this inning on a double play.
- 1:09:42Dave Schalks couldn't find the handles.
- 1:09:44He's charged for the net, and a run score.
- 1:09:50And his teammates, Tom Griffin still on the hook.
- 1:09:544-3, Boston.
- 1:09:56Berlton waits.
- 1:09:58The kickoff attempt not made to second base as Bobby Griffin running over towards the bag at second.
- 1:10:04Griffin world stepped off the rubber, but did not throw to second.
- 1:10:13Rohanford second.
- 1:10:15Optin at first, the pitch.
- 1:10:17Outside breaking ball for Berlton.
- 1:10:20Two and on the record.
- 1:10:25Berlton was only three home runs, but he hit number three yesterday.
- 1:10:28Downing California as the sixth game hitting streak goes.
- 1:10:32One for two in this game.
- 1:10:34He wins.
- 1:10:35Close stance, right hand hitter.
- 1:10:36A long fly ball.
- 1:10:37Hit the deep end to the side, going back.
- 1:10:39The warning, he makes the catch.
- 1:10:41Reans up against the wall, goes back to the infield.
- 1:10:44One run, he will tag and go to third.
- 1:10:47Rohanford third base, remaining at first, put Optin on a towering deep fly ball.
- 1:10:53Hits a straightaway center field and a warning track, the base of the wall by Rick Berlton.
- 1:11:04What is the first to third now with two outs.
- 1:11:07As Griffin getting the advantage of the deep center field area.
- 1:11:13He and Fenway Park, although that was not the deepest part to go apart.
- 1:11:17He's going to chain around toward right center field and there's a little corner out there, that's 420 to U.S.
- 1:11:24That one was 20 deep.
- 1:11:27Red lead up, lift, hole for two.
- 1:11:30He wakes.
- 1:11:31What is the first to third?
- 1:11:32Two outs, down low, downing for the nice stop.
- 1:11:38Red lead 319, seven home runs, 27 RBI.
- 1:11:41He's got hits low and broad.
- 1:11:43And hits right hand as well.
- 1:11:46He's got to keep the wood back and forth.
- 1:11:50The pitch, wing, center foul back.
- 1:11:54Turns off the screen, back to the ball board, behind home plate, one and one.
- 1:12:00Down Griffin, on the fight he's way out of it without any more damage being done in one run.
- 1:12:05And he should have gotten out of his inning with no one scoring.
- 1:12:09But Dave Shaw put in a double play ball.
- 1:12:13Griffin's set.
- 1:12:14The leg left hand in the pitch, check, wing, looper, that in the pitch, foul, by inches, wide on third base.
- 1:12:20Jackson going over trying to backhand.
- 1:12:22It was a very difficult play for him.
- 1:12:25The angels lucky the ball was foul, one and two.
- 1:12:33Glynn checking his bats just to the right of home plate.
- 1:12:37Now tapping it against the sole of his shoes, cleaning his spikes.
- 1:12:41Digging back in, left hand hitter against the right-handed Griffin.
- 1:12:47But Thompson on the air over first base.
- 1:12:50Jack Brohammer is third.
- 1:12:52Tops over to first base.
- 1:12:54And back in time, but Thompson.
- 1:13:02Angels and red shots.
- 1:13:04In the second lead, 4-3. He just barely did mention to him to.
- 1:13:14You know, really a couple of steps to the warning track in front of that scoreboard.
- 1:13:18On the green mark steering in left field.
- 1:13:21Blocked off, straight away center.
- 1:13:24Kenny Landrell, off the line, well off the line and right.
- 1:13:28Glynn a high five, hit the left field, what was the win? It's John.
- 1:13:53The double play for him is Justin Campbell, he's got the ball in front of him.
- 1:13:58The second three run home run of the game.
- 1:14:01This one by Fred Lynn, really getting close to wide effort.
- 1:14:05The bases are clean, and the Boston Red Sox have jumped out in front with four runs in their half of the fourth.
- 1:14:14And they lead it, 7-3.
- 1:14:19John is up for the plate now, but the top home run hitter in the American League, Jim Wright.
- 1:14:24He's going to miss. High outside fastball, all right.
- 1:14:28One strike.
- 1:14:30Nineteen home runs for Jim.
- 1:14:3254 on the eyes, leads the American League in those two categories.
- 1:14:36One after a breaking ball that broke low and inside, it's going to.
- 1:14:42Fred Lynn, a left hand hitter, going to the opposite field, getting the ball onto the wind, over the wall, into the screen.
- 1:14:50Home run.
- 1:14:53Griffin deals up high, one and two to right.
- 1:15:02A tough break for Griffin.
- 1:15:04He's still going out of his inning. Checked wing line, look out, looks like it may have hit someone right behind home plate. Now they're checking the young man.
- 1:15:13And apparently he's shaken up a bit.
- 1:15:16Also concerned is Jim Wright, who's looking into the stands, the five rows deep.
- 1:15:20Just to the right of the protective screen, the young man wearing a baseball cap.
- 1:15:26And he looks to be a little shaken up, although it doesn't appear to be seriously hurt.
- 1:15:30So Wright turns his attention to the mound, and picks it down Griffin.
- 1:15:33The one, two, fifth. Wing and a miss right through.
- 1:15:37The Griffin out of the inning.
- 1:15:39But the horses are out of the barn because four runs score.
- 1:15:43A three run home run by Fred Lynn, big blow in the fourth.
- 1:15:47And at the end of fourth complete in Boston, it's seven three Red Sox.
- 1:16:04Now listen on the deck end for a Fenway-Boston Boston with the Red Sox are on top by a four, seven runs, seven hits, two heads, four Bostons for the Angels.
- 1:16:11Three runs, four hits and one cross clear.
- 1:16:14It's the top of the best and here's Dick. All right, Al, you can't hear the Red Sox.
- 1:16:17A five out inning, which that missed double play amounted to.
- 1:16:21And they took advantage as they have three unearned runs to match the Angels' three unearned runs.
- 1:16:25They scored in the first inning off. Bill Lee hasn't allowed to get sent.
- 1:16:28A lot of greats will try to start things. Takes a through ball for a strike.
- 1:16:31Rich is mounted to third and Lyon to George.
- 1:16:34So Lee down three nothing after one.
- 1:16:36Sees his teammates tied in the second on Dwight Evans.
- 1:16:38Three run homers and Fred Lynn, Boston Eric, gets four home in the fourth inning.
- 1:16:43Roll curve ball, grounded foul.
- 1:16:45Rich just couldn't wait that long and fouls it into the Angel dugout.
- 1:16:48Two strikes to get up.
- 1:16:50That's a good enough three runs on four hits, Boston Eric, and they'd all the runs unearned in the first inning.
- 1:16:56The Angels do not have a hit sent off Lee.
- 1:17:01Looking for his eighth one of the year.
- 1:17:03Six for eight, two under five pounders.
- 1:17:05Flings into the lineup, the two strike bet.
- 1:17:07Click of the line drive foul into the first row of box seats beyond the Angel dugout.
- 1:17:13Down on ground, Fenway Park and Lawson.
- 1:17:16Where the Red Sox, towards this team, has built to fit this park.
- 1:17:20A lot of right-handed power.
- 1:17:22They have taken a seven to three lead as they shoot for their 23rd home win against only four Lawson.
- 1:17:29A windup and a hit. Outside, it's the state of that one.
- 1:17:32Off the corner.
- 1:17:34Lee and Fisk the battery.
- 1:17:36Thompson a third, roll from the shortstop.
- 1:17:38Brohammer and Scott on the right side of the infield.
- 1:17:40They each have two hits apiece.
- 1:17:42Gads and left, Flynn and Seder, heaven's at right.
- 1:17:44The pitch. Swing and a foul.
- 1:17:46Gritz, Jeff, and Shiv get a piece of the high curve ball.
- 1:17:50Gritz, Bott, Sack, and Rudy.
- 1:17:52In the Angels' fifth inning.
- 1:17:53We told you, Connie Lampert, the Angels talented young rookie third baseman will be out for probably three to four weeks
- 1:17:58with a sprained thumb and ligament damage.
- 1:18:00They've called up Dave Mechamer, the Pacific Coast League's leading hitter.
- 1:18:04The pitch. Well, curve ball, and it's a high fly ball to the shortstop.
- 1:18:09Little soft fly ball to Rick Wilson who pedaled out on the grass and made the catch.
- 1:18:14And then a case again of the Angel hitter not able to wait long enough for it.
- 1:18:18He hit it off the end of the bat. He just couldn't wait.
- 1:18:21And that's part of the style of Lee when he gets it going.
- 1:18:24If he gets the end figure, then he can throw it that slow.
- 1:18:28One out, Lyman Bott, Sack, and Trout at twice. Two short and a bird.
- 1:18:33Lee pumps left-hander, hands left-hander. The pitch.
- 1:18:35Slow curve is in there.
- 1:18:38The Angels got their way to the first inning.
- 1:18:40Out of there, Landro Cabe on Scott there.
- 1:18:42Two out, double by Rudy, case Landro home.
- 1:18:44Then Jackson single, Bretman walks out fairly.
- 1:18:47Hit a base and throw to single the right setter.
- 1:18:50High with a fastball is Lee. It's one and one.
- 1:18:53Singles by Scott and Brohammer.
- 1:18:55An Evans fly ball home run into the screener left side at for Boston in the second inning.
- 1:19:00And singles by Scott and Brohammer. And Ayers starts to chuck out one run in as they force.
- 1:19:05There's a line right face at left center field.
- 1:19:07That's 12 games in a row now for Bott stock who turns first and holds.
- 1:19:11And Jazz gets his throw into the end field.
- 1:19:15Lyman Bott's stock getting 2.74 to start.
- 1:19:18Singles to left center field. And here's Joe Rudy.
- 1:19:21And of course, one point.
- 1:19:22He gets himself right back in the ball game at Fenway.
- 1:19:24And Joe Rudy's a man who has that potential.
- 1:19:27He doubled off the base at the wall at left center field his first time up to drive in a run.
- 1:19:31And Brough in the third inning.
- 1:20:01Rudy settles in.
- 1:20:05Bott stock with one out at first base. Scott holding him on.
- 1:20:08Brohammer second. And Brough from the short stuff will squeeze forward.
- 1:20:12Working for the double play.
- 1:20:13Hobson guarding the line deep at third.
- 1:20:15Lee straightens. Left hander comes to the plate.
- 1:20:18And it's a line right face at the right field.
- 1:20:20Bott stock will move to second and hold as Evans huckles the throw in.
- 1:20:24And the Angels have a back to back singles by Bott stock and Rudy.
- 1:20:28Good one out here in the fifth inning.
- 1:20:31And Joe Rudy, that's the kind of Rudy that will start hitting like he knows he can.
- 1:20:35Guy will go to the off the field with that outside pitch.
- 1:20:38So Ron Jackson comes up. He has the line single to left.
- 1:20:41And with Rudy at first base in the third inning, hit a bullet back to the middle.
- 1:20:45Appear to be a two-based hit.
- 1:20:46And Lee in self-defense threw up the glove, caught it cleanly, and doubled up Rudy easily.
- 1:20:52One of the fastest double plays you'll ever see.
- 1:20:54The sound of mitt was quack, quack, and it was Lee catching it and throwing the shot.
- 1:20:59Curveball in there.
- 1:21:01So he's starting almost every hitter with a big, slow curveball.
- 1:21:05That set up the rhythm of all the rest of his pitches.
- 1:21:10Seven to three Boston Leeds, two on one out.
- 1:21:13Swing and a ground ball toward the hole.
- 1:21:14Hobson has it, goes to second for one.
- 1:21:16Throw hammer back to first.
- 1:21:17They throw it into the dugout.
- 1:21:18And a run will score.
- 1:21:20So the Angels get a break as Rudy breaking up the double play, and it would have been to.
- 1:21:25Went in to throw hammer.
- 1:21:26And it was a legal slide.
- 1:21:28And so in the Naked League games this year, they've called the double play when that runner goes out of the baseline.
- 1:21:33So the Angels get a break there.
- 1:21:35A run scores Bontak.
- 1:21:37And you can credit Jackson with a no-RBI.
- 1:21:40He's safe at second base.
- 1:21:42It's an 8 all the way.
- 1:21:45He'll have his choice.
- 1:21:46E4.
- 1:21:49Braddock scoring from second base.
- 1:21:54And Jackson has second in scoring position for Mo Rechman.
- 1:21:58As the Angels trail Boston by three, seven to four.
- 1:22:01It's a big run at second base.
- 1:22:03Rechman has lost and safe on an error by Gwen Thompson.
- 1:22:06Red Sox committed their third error of the game.
- 1:22:11The set by Lee.
- 1:22:13Checkback at Janssen.
- 1:22:15And here comes the pitch.
- 1:22:16A ground ball toward the hole that's going to be back headed by Burlton.
- 1:22:19He plants.
- 1:22:20He throws.
- 1:22:21And he hits it.
- 1:22:22Oh my.
- 1:22:23A big call by Dick Rimmelgen.
- 1:22:25But he's dead.
- 1:22:26Here comes Jim Fregosi out to argue.
- 1:22:29The Angels skipper will talk to the boss.
- 1:22:31Clear the first base post first.
- 1:22:33And Fregosi has got him.
- 1:22:35And Fregosi just turns and goes back to the Nugget.
- 1:22:37A fine play by Burlton.
- 1:22:39Deep in the hole.
- 1:22:40He's got a great arm.
- 1:22:42And he's used it royally to throw out Rechman by Wicker at first base.
- 1:22:48There was a halfway mark in this one.
- 1:22:50Four and a half innings in the book.
- 1:22:51And the Angels score a run on two hits.
- 1:22:53One error lead one in Boston 7 and the Angels 4.
- 1:22:57New picture for the Angels now is Ken Bradd who started his major league career in the Boston Red Sox organization.
- 1:23:04Signed out of El Segundo, California.
- 1:23:06The older brother of Kansas City's Sterling Third Baseman George Bradd.
- 1:23:10Ken warms up with Brian Downing.
- 1:23:13And we'll see if he's going to be able to get a shot in the bottom of the fifth inning with a score of Boston 7 and the Angels 4.
- 1:23:20Now Griffin goes four innings, allows seven runs, four in the first.
- 1:23:24Seven hits, walk one, struck out three.
- 1:23:27And Griffin has to be talking to himself down in the clubhouse at the moment because he was running to first and third in a tie game in the bottom of the fourth inning of three.
- 1:23:35He struck out Evans and then induced Thompson to hit what appeared to be a double play ball at shortstop.
- 1:23:40He would have been out of the inning the game so tight at three.
- 1:23:42Instead, Scott booted the ball.
- 1:23:44The Red Sox got their two extra outs and immediately converted them into four runs.
- 1:23:49One of those came home on a Thompson's on ball error to Scott.
- 1:23:54And then a three run blast by Fred Lynn.
- 1:23:56And actually a fly ball that he just lifted to the left and the wind blew it about five feet above the top of the wall into the screen.
- 1:24:05Yastrinsky up and a pitch by Bradd is rounded toward second.
- 1:24:08In the clean heart by Gritch, almost went through his legs.
- 1:24:11He's thrown him out of the three steps.
- 1:24:14Yant has got his second mark and now that easy tap to Bob Gritch.
- 1:24:18Thompson's fifth can throw it out and struck out.
- 1:24:21Scott, you're in first. Scott, you're in first.
- 1:24:26Checking the scores in the National League, Atlanta leads St. Louis one to nothing after five.
- 1:24:31Chicago two, Cincinnati nothing at the bottom of the fourth of Cincinnati.
- 1:24:35Pittsburgh scores top of the first at Houston.
- 1:24:37Phillies one, Dodgers nothing after three in Los Angeles.
- 1:24:40Wazinski, he's been on a chair, his 13th home run of the year.
- 1:24:43The wind up, a pitch by Bradd.
- 1:24:45Get the high five on the center, back up by Kaki Avro, makes the cat baiting away on the warning tap, almost misjudged that.
- 1:24:52At the last moment had to leap up and make the play over his shoulder as the wind carried that one well.
- 1:24:57The flag on the left-hand field is darkened out toward that three monster as the wind blowing always gets around 20 miles an hour.
- 1:25:08Going in hard now to that goal right ball.
- 1:25:10George Scott, two line drive single, scored two runs. In fact he has nine in both rallies, the three-run rally in the second and the four runs in the fourth.
- 1:25:18Seven to four, Boston a pitch, blown inside by Bradd.
- 1:25:22That's the flag at San Diego tonight, no report and this afternoon the Giants got a one-hitter by Ed Hylicki.
- 1:25:27Cut out Montreal one-nothing. Giants got only three hits to victory against Steve Rogers.
- 1:25:31There's a change in their first strike, one-on-one.
- 1:25:35White's on quick, Cleveland one-nothing after one in Chicago.
- 1:25:38Texas has a one-nothing lead at Kansas City after one and a half.
- 1:25:41Outside ball two, two and one to George Scott.
- 1:25:44Willie Randolph has hit a second home of the year for the Yankees and a third to give New York a one-nothing lead against Oakland after three.
- 1:25:51The pitch, third ball, fouled out of play.
- 1:25:53In that game at Yankee Stadium, Ron Gidry is trying to win his tenth game with Ottawa this year.
- 1:25:59Little much hander from Louisiana, nine and oh.
- 1:26:02Detroit leads Milwaukee four to three after three.
- 1:26:05Minnesota, Toronto, not underway, rains up at Toronto.
- 1:26:08And Baltimore still leading Seattle three-nothing after five and a half.
- 1:26:12The pitch by Bradd swings in a miss and a high back wall and Ken Webb restores the motors.
- 1:26:17Here's a defending as the Red Sox go down one, two, three for the first time in the game.
- 1:26:21And after five it's underway. Red Sox seven, Angel four.
- 1:26:26The man is a darned member of the Boston Red Sox with no lead.
- 1:26:36The official history of record after by then got made a change bringing in big right-handed Bob Stanley from the Boston Bulls.
- 1:26:44So the line on the two starters, now Griffin and the Angels four runs, about seven runs, four of which.
- 1:26:52We're earned with seven hits, one loss, three strikeouts.
- 1:26:56Bill Lee went right in and four runs all unearned, six hits, one two, and struck out none.
- 1:27:03Ron Bailey will be the first man to bounce Stanley's faces.
- 1:27:07Stanley, an excellent record in 18 appearances, has four wins, only one loss, three saves, and a 2.80 ERA.
- 1:27:15Take eyes on the natural thinkers.
- 1:27:18And the starter, the BT Angels, in a prime ball game here last summer.
- 1:27:25Stanley lights into the bulls end where he's used his middle reliever and his long relief.
- 1:27:33Stanley knocked in two runs with a single back in the first.
- 1:27:36Then he's hit by Stanley.
- 1:27:37He's going to drive into right center field, hit pretty well Evans and Lynn on their horses.
- 1:27:40It's Lynn racing. Lee Dangin can't get it. It's off the wall.
- 1:27:43Oh, Lynn hit the wall very hard and in the second goes Stanley with a double.
- 1:27:47And let's hope Fred Leonard is okay.
- 1:27:49As he meant for that one-handed catch, he slammed into the padded barrier in front of the Boston Bulls end and he hit it hard.
- 1:27:56He's on his knees and his conches and taken, hopefully not a serious injury.
- 1:28:03Over to a 10-2, the right fielder, Dwight Evans, and now the Boston trainer gets there, is Lynn.
- 1:28:09That's like a wide receiver going on a 20-yard hook pattern and as he goes up to catch the ball, somebody comes up from behind and just glams it full bore.
- 1:28:20And Lynn's shaken. Former outstanding football star himself.
- 1:28:25And trying to gather his faculties as a Boston Red Sox Bulls end anxiously watching.
- 1:28:32He steps to his feet now.
- 1:28:34Now Stanley is okay. We'll see him again.
- 1:28:54Lynn getting a hand as he's escorted back to his defensive position in center field by the trainer.
- 1:28:59Oh, that's good news. You hate to see anyone in this game get hurt like that.
- 1:29:04A superstar like Lynn, shaking his right arm as he goes back to position.
- 1:29:11It appeared he was trying to catch that ball as he raced from center field into right center.
- 1:29:16And he's starting to backhand his leaping try, just missed the ball, and then his next step took him right into the wall in front of the Boston Bulls end.
- 1:29:24So barely a second base with a double. He's two for three as he greets Stanley on his first hit.
- 1:29:29Seven to four Boston in the sixth inning. Now right side, Scott to his right to field it. Stanley covering. The flip is stopped by Stanley and dropped his day.
- 1:29:37Stanley goes to third. So that's going to be the fourth error of the game for Boston as Stanley dropped that underhand part from George Scott.
- 1:29:46Scott with an assist, but the air goes to Stanley. And the Angels, certainly with no enough, bring the tie run to the plate.
- 1:29:57Seven to four score. Unusual total up there for Boston Red Sox. Seven runs, seven hits, and four errors.
- 1:30:04The Angels taking advantage of a couple of them to score four underhands runs off Bill Lee.
- 1:30:10Brian Downing with runners at first and third, no enough. Right-handed hitting catcher is flied out and tapped to the mound.
- 1:30:17Stanley looks in, gets the sign, and held his fifth. Runners leap from the corner and it's a hit.
- 1:30:23Outside with a flat-out back wall.
- 1:30:26Austin just off the back and third. Wilson and Broham are looking for two off the middle. Scott anchored at first base, holding on short.
- 1:30:33The outfield has taken the pole for Downing. The pitch. Breaking ball in there. One and one.
- 1:30:39Downing the wide open stance. And as the pitch is made, steps even more down that third base line, and that curveball's caught the inside corner.
- 1:30:48Stanley settles at the waist. The one-one set. Swing and a foul into the glove.
- 1:30:53Catcher's count of six is one and two. Good fastball. Brought that in at the base.
- 1:31:00Stanley is just one and three. Born at Portland, Maine, six-four and two-oh-five.
- 1:31:07As the sign's going out, runners at first and third. The pitch.
- 1:31:10Chop foul and again Downing just got a piece of it. That's where Stanley is rough. If he can keep the pitches down there around the knees with his natural finger, he's going to throw a lot of ground ball.
- 1:31:20And in this ballpark, that's a bonus.
- 1:31:24Infield will gladly give up a round to turn a double play. Seven to four Boston going out of the angle, fifth inning.
- 1:31:30Talk of first, barely a third. The pitch. Play on the ground ball, fifty-two. Brokken has it. Goes to Brawhammer. Back to first base, double play.
- 1:31:39Run score, this seven to five Boston.
- 1:31:44Well, that's the difference in the game now. Each team has had a double play ball with first and third.
- 1:31:50And no out or one out, the Angels up there and the Red Sox went on to score four. Now Boston turns its double play and the Angels get only one run.
- 1:32:00Six-four-three. Nicely turned. Two outs down to sixth inning, a seven to five score.
- 1:32:07And the Angels second away at Boston's lead here at Canlandra. Left-handed hitting right fielder. He's 0-3 facing the Southfall Dilley. First chance against Stanley.
- 1:32:16He takes it low and inside, ball in.
- 1:32:26Wind it by Stanley. Here comes the pitch. Swing and a foul off the plate on fire.
- 1:32:31The test protector is one and one. Alandro hitting two forty-seven at the start. Counts in California and Arizona State University. Alandro, the final league player of the year. Last season, Riley Harold at Youngstreet.
- 1:32:46The pitch. Outside with a back ball. Stanley's throwing well. Two and one to count.
- 1:32:54Angels were three in the first, one in the fifth, now one in the sixth. They put them two out and the two on pitch. Low, three and one. On deck is Bobby Gritch.
- 1:33:04It is an absolute must if you're trying to pitch for Boston or pitching in this ballpark and an opposing color. They use gross strikes. You cannot afford to walk in it that way.
- 1:33:15The three one six. Inside ball four. Get started up with the right arm and said, nope, that's not good enough. It hits him down Zimmer to the mound. Stanley walks Alandro and again the angels have the time running the plate.
- 1:33:28Bobby Gritch, the hitter. And Boston's trying to get someone else up in the bullpen. Could be their eighth right-hander, Bill Campbell. It is a right-hander.
- 1:33:41Zimmer talking to his batter, Stanley and fifth. Stanley the pitcher is tearing down at his feet and falling away at the dirt on the mound.
- 1:33:50Gets the word from the skipper. Now Josh backs to the first base red-tide dugout. Gritch in the game is 0 for 3.
- 1:33:58Down to the third line is short and a soft line is short. Two men throwing, Tom Bergmeyer, a left-hander and Nick Drago, a right-hander. Stanley looks and gets his side.
- 1:34:15Gritch with one point to tie it up with seven to five. Boston were in the sixth inning of a wild one to start this long road trip. The hit. In there a good fastball.
- 1:34:23Right down the middle. Angels two and Boston two to Baltimore. Three in New York. Three Minnesota. Cap it off with a four game series in Texas.
- 1:34:33The set. Set the run at a pit. Playing the ground ball weakly right side but that's going to twist into right field for a base hit.
- 1:34:39Rohan out of channel right. Hits it up and goes to third. And it is not in time. Broke it away from Austin. In the second base goes Gritch and the Angels have a tying run in going position. And I think we're going to have another.
- 1:34:54A little twisting ground ball that got by Scott. Rohan was playing way over near second. Finally caught up with the ball as it was dying in the grass in channel right field. He had no play at first base but alertly noted that Landro running all the way was going to try to make it to third and made a good throw.
- 1:35:10I believe that I had Landro had the ball gotten to third base and Austin but I think the throw hit Landro. And no error is charged. Gritch goes to second on the throw. credit him with a base hit. The second on the throw. Landro to third. They're going to walk Lyman Boston contentedly to load the bases.
- 1:35:29The Angels with a run home. And Landro at third. Gritch the tying run at second in a 7-5 game. And Stanley rather than pitch to the red hot Lyman Boston is going to go against Joe Rudy who is two for two today. A double, a single and a walk.
- 1:35:48Oh my. We said at the very start of the first inning when the Angels scored three. That's just a drop in the bucket. That's just flipping a penny in the pool. If you play a ten way you're going to get out the silver dollars because the stakes are high and it's easy to score runs.
- 1:36:03Rudy out there. A halo over every base with Vostok at first. Gritch standing at second. Landro at third. Boston seventh. The Angels five. The Angels with a plop out some floppy fielding plays by Boston.
- 1:36:18As the mother had run, Boston took the best run on two swings to the bat. Three run homers from Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn. How Rudy would like to tie at one. He settles in.
- 1:36:33Infield back in all positions except for Hobson guarding the line behind the bag of third. Stanley into the wind up. Here comes the pitch. Play the brown ball through the middle of the middle field. Here comes Landro. Richard around first. He scores and the Angels have tied at seven-seven on Rudy's third hit of the game.
- 1:36:53They pitch around last shot to get to Rudy. Rudy coming into the game batting only 171 but may be finding that excellent hitting stroke of his tonight with a double lock and now two shot singles. That one went right back through the middle. Stanley reaching for it with under his glove as Rudy has driven in three runs.
- 1:37:13And now the Angels have netted his bat. We're back in a new game at seven-seven. Don't you dare go away. They both kick their extra points in Boston. Here's Ron Jackson swinging a high fly foul hooking down under the roof and left field and with a win that one had home run death.
- 1:37:32Ron Jackson has single run scores lined into a double play and safe on a fielders choice. He's the eighth man to bat in the inning. And only the double play turned by the Boston infield as they've the red dot. More easel run scoring here on this day.
- 1:37:49Runners at first and second. The fifth. Flank and a chopper toward third foul. John McNamara will field it and is coaching by flipping to the third base up by a brief nab and eight. Last shot and second. Rudy at first.
- 1:38:05Seven-seven tie. The Angels about hit the red dot nine to seven. So both starters Tom Griffin and Dilley will not figure in the decision tonight. The game belongs to Stanley and Brett. Jackson trying to give the Angels the lead. They play them deep toward left. The pitch.
- 1:38:19Hit him in the left knee and Jackson comes up the hobbler. Now the bases are loaded as Ron Jackson already playing hurt with a bad bat. Is hit just above the left knee with a bat ball. And an 0-2 pitch. Stanley didn't want to do that. So the Angels again have the bases loaded. Here comes John Zimmer and that's going to be all for Bob Stanley.
- 1:38:43The pitching change is made by the people of the Red Sox but for a second identification from Austin Mapp. This is Angels radio 78. The Angels seven the Red Sox seven. Bob Stanley is out and hit Grego.
- 1:39:00He's going to come in to pitch to the Angels from Irving Rettman with the bases loaded. Jackson hit by that bat ball is okay. Walking off the thing as he maneuvers himself down the right field foul line. Getting very little sympathy from first baseman George Scott. Rudy to second.
- 1:39:16Five times the time breaking run. Stan to third. Is it thing will get Grego brought in in a Boston golf cart adorned with a Boston Red Sox hat. Here's the cover. Grego will step out on a bases loaded ten. First baseman's going out now.
- 1:39:30All right. There's five more family dates upcoming at our stadium this season and all boxing team members on these special evenings and afternoons are at half price for these five days. Now the first one to bear in mind is Monday June 26th. That's a 5-10 p.m. game with Kansas City.
- 1:39:46The Western Division champions defending Royals. They open a four game series with the Angels and the first game is June 26th and that is the first family date upcoming. Now two more family dates upcoming in July.
- 1:40:00July 17th for the Detroit Tigers and you know all the young good hitters on that team like Thompson and Kaplan and of course the veteran like Rusty Starr. July 31st at Sino-Fines the surprise team in the American League the Beach Boys Gang. Then August 15th the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:40:16The team you've been hearing about tonight. September 4th the Texas Rangers. There's some top eight attractions upcoming and remember that on Saturday night first tickets are at half price. That's stuff to talk.
- 1:40:30Seattle just scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning. John Hale has hit a three run homer for Seattle. Little problem with that Western Union. Ken Singleton hit a solo homer in the sixth inning so Baltimore had to lead four and Seattle had four.
- 1:40:49In the seventh at Baltimore, the Orioles have won nine in a row.
- 1:40:54Ten in a row.
- 1:40:56One of those two. Nine or ten in a row.
- 1:40:58The Minnesota to Toronto, Goltz against Moore. Game has not started.
- 1:41:01It is a five to four lead. Milwaukee at Detroit in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:41:05Baltimore with a ten game winning streak.
- 1:41:07The Yankees have scored again on Greg Neville's temperal run of the year.
- 1:41:10And after five innings, Ron Gidry going for his tenth win without a loss.
- 1:41:14Leads Oakland 2-0 in New York.
- 1:41:16This three Kansas City one, Bobby Bonds has hit his seventh home run of the year
- 1:41:19with a man on in the third inning in Kansas City to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
- 1:41:23Bonds has just signed a two million dollar contract yesterday.
- 1:41:26Reportedly for five to seven years.
- 1:41:29So he's a happy Ranger and a very wealthy one.
- 1:41:32And completing the American League scoreboard, the White's have to have a one nothing lead
- 1:41:35at home against Cleveland after three.
- 1:41:38Rettman settles in.
- 1:41:40The Yankees are playing short three men because of injury.
- 1:41:44That takes away some of the maneuvering that Jim Fragosi can do.
- 1:41:47So it's right hander against right hander.
- 1:41:48Base is loaded.
- 1:41:50Drago sent and a pitch.
- 1:41:51Way outside, ball one.
- 1:41:53Rettman is locked safe on an air.
- 1:41:55And Wilson recalls one deep into the hole to throw him out on a close play.
- 1:41:59That was him at this inning.
- 1:42:01The Yankees have hit around for the second time in this game.
- 1:42:04Throwing three runs on four hits in the air in the first inning.
- 1:42:06They have three more runs here in this inning.
- 1:42:09Three hits in the air and a couple of walks.
- 1:42:11Base is loaded.
- 1:42:12A seven-seven tie.
- 1:42:14Drago to the plate.
- 1:42:15Inside corner.
- 1:42:16Rettman jumps back but it's off the edge.
- 1:42:21Rettman has a grand slam over on this year for the Yankees.
- 1:42:25He's only over.
- 1:42:27Everyone becomes a power man in this ballpark.
- 1:42:29It's basically as you hit from the right side.
- 1:42:32Five stock at third.
- 1:42:33Rudy and Nick Lee to second base.
- 1:42:34Jackson ready to go from first with two outs.
- 1:42:37Drago, better than right handers.
- 1:42:38One-one hit.
- 1:42:39High and inside.
- 1:42:40Two and one.
- 1:42:41Rettman kicking his swing as he collapsed to his left knee.
- 1:42:45Drago has done a good job with Boston.
- 1:42:50One point six-six during run average.
- 1:42:52He's saved six games.
- 1:42:53Tops on the clock.
- 1:42:55That's tough to do when you've got a Bill Campbell out there.
- 1:42:57He's won two and lost only one.
- 1:43:00Trying to pick out of a base is loaded jam.
- 1:43:02And here comes the action pitch.
- 1:43:03Two and one to Merv Rettman.
- 1:43:05Drago hands his sign.
- 1:43:07Low target.
- 1:43:08Here's the pitch.
- 1:43:09Rettman takes right two.
- 1:43:11Unquieter and Rettman unhappy with himself.
- 1:43:13Good to do in fifth.
- 1:43:14Me to it.
- 1:43:15Two and two.
- 1:43:19We're in the sixth setting.
- 1:43:20A new game at seventh.
- 1:43:24Wind blowing briskly toward left field.
- 1:43:27Yes, back a couple of steps from the warning pad.
- 1:43:29Lin and deeper left center.
- 1:43:31Evans back and right.
- 1:43:33A two-two count.
- 1:43:35Drago slowly at the waist.
- 1:43:37Here's the pitch.
- 1:43:38Inside, ball three.
- 1:43:39And that builds the drama right through the bounding point where Drago has to throw a
- 1:43:46trite or the Angels get a run.
- 1:43:48And Rettman has to protect the plate.
- 1:43:50I don't think he can get a hold of something and put the Angels in front.
- 1:43:53Angels three in the first.
- 1:43:54Red Sox three in the second.
- 1:43:56Red Sox four more in the fourth to make it seven to three.
- 1:43:59Angels one in the fifth.
- 1:44:00And they score three here in the fifth to tie.
- 1:44:02And now three and two to count.
- 1:44:04And the pitcher, well, who's it under?
- 1:44:06The batter of the pitcher, most would say it's Drago who has to throw a trite.
- 1:44:10Rettman waves the wood back and forth.
- 1:44:12Drago's settled slowly in the waist.
- 1:44:14Three-two-fifth.
- 1:44:15Bring it a looper to left center field.
- 1:44:16Here comes Lin in a hurry.
- 1:44:18He makes the catch.
- 1:44:22In this game where the wind actually hurt the Angels because the ball was not hit hard at all,
- 1:44:28but the wind carried it out to Fred Lin who galloped into jail to left center field to make the catch.
- 1:44:33The Angels settle for three runs, three hits, one error, and they lead three.
- 1:44:38Level of the sixth, five, seven, seven, five.
- 1:44:44The Cleveland Indians have signed five more players who are recent selections of the summer free agent draft.
- 1:44:49The signing brings eight to total of players in the free agent draft who are now under contract.
- 1:44:54Signed with third base and Pete Peltz, a ninth round pick from Clemson University.
- 1:44:58Picked Bob Husey, a 13th round selection from Xavier Illinois College.
- 1:45:03Picked Jerelle Struzheim, a 15th round pick from Olympic Fields, Illinois.
- 1:45:07Picked Jim McBride, a 19th round choice from Jackson State.
- 1:45:11And second baseman Ken Gilmore, a 27th round selection from Troy State University.
- 1:45:16The Minnesota Twins announce the signing of left-hander pitcher Chris Deason, the club's 22nd choice in last week's draft.
- 1:45:22Deason will report to Melbourne, Florida for two weeks of training,
- 1:45:26and then will pitch for Elizabeth Town of the Appalachian League.
- 1:45:29The Boston Red Sox signed seven more free agents selected in last week's draft.
- 1:45:33Five of those signings have been assigned to Elmira of the Class A New York Pennsylvania League.
- 1:45:41A wild one at Fenway Park in Boston as the Red Sox open a long home stand.
- 1:45:47And the Angels have a long two week road trip.
- 1:45:53Trying to figure out the other runs the way we did in that six-setting game,
- 1:45:57before two more hunter's runs and now six of their seven runs on the Earth.
- 1:46:01Ken Rudd at his ball game, and he faces Jack Rohammer,
- 1:46:05Dwight Evans and Wood Thompson, the lower third of the Boston batting order.
- 1:46:08The Angels have left eight and on base, Boston only two.
- 1:46:12That'll tell you part of the story as the Red Sox with runners on, it's off with a big blow.
- 1:46:16Dwight Evans a free run over, Fred Renssen saying,
- 1:46:19the Red Sox are pumped to this, waiting in the midst of Rohammer.
- 1:46:23Angels throwing three in the first, leaving the base at full,
- 1:46:26and three more in the sixth to drive,
- 1:46:28but the base is worth runs when Brettman puts the fly ball to center.
- 1:46:33Inside is Brett, one and one.
- 1:46:36The Angels take up the eight, Atlanta to St. Louis nothing after six and a half in Georgia.
- 1:46:42Line up by Brett, one and one to this.
- 1:46:44Third ball hit the left center field after a tough play by Block,
- 1:46:46going back, back, back, back, it's over, hit, back to by Rudy.
- 1:46:50Rohammer has found new life in Boston.
- 1:46:53He's had a 240, 250 hit almost with his wife,
- 1:46:56but a 300 hitter with a Red Sox has been doubled to left center field.
- 1:47:01And again, that's when the Red Sox already has a ball,
- 1:47:05but it's carried right over his head as Rohammer is three for three,
- 1:47:09two singles and now a double, as the Red Sox come right back against Ken Brett.
- 1:47:14That's their eight hit and brings up Dwight Evans, a three run over, and he's stuck out.
- 1:47:19Other National League scores, White's got two, Cincinnati nothing after five.
- 1:47:23In the sixth, Pittsburgh leads at Houston, one nothing in the third.
- 1:47:26Billy's two, down to nothing, bottom of the fifth in L.A.
- 1:47:29Olberd's five, Olibinsky is 13th, and Smith is in his ninth for the two gold scores.
- 1:47:34The fact that other guys beat Montréal one nothing, New York and San Diego no report.
- 1:47:40Dwight Evans way outside and a fine shot by Brian Downing.
- 1:47:55Rohammer on second base, Ken Brett left-hander against the right-hander,
- 1:47:59Dwight Evans a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning, here's the pitch.
- 1:48:02On the outside corner, one and one.
- 1:48:05Brett's last side was Wednesday night, part of the double header at Oakland,
- 1:48:09and he hit very well, just a couple of hits and seven cutout innings.
- 1:48:16He is two and three on the year, ERA up there at five points to tape.
- 1:48:21That's Rohammer's second, here's the pitch, curve ball fouled at the three,
- 1:48:24and Evans trying to go to right field with it.
- 1:48:26Hit one and two to the Boston right fielder.
- 1:48:32Brett's on to the Yankees in one of the amazing courts of the 1978 American League schedule,
- 1:48:39have not played each other yet.
- 1:48:41First game will be a week from tonight, and they'll see each other a lot,
- 1:48:44so it'll go steady for a couple of weeks.
- 1:48:47Brett gets a sign from Downing, is ahead on the count, the one-two pitch is one on a wide line,
- 1:48:51right field, hits to the left, and it's a base hit.
- 1:48:53Andrew's going to the line, trying to cut it off, he's got it,
- 1:48:55Evans going for two, here comes the throw,
- 1:48:57and it's time, back-to-back double for Boston, they lead eight to seven.
- 1:49:10A frustrating game for the Angels, Jim and Jeff Ragusey,
- 1:49:13as Bob keeps battling back, and as soon as they get even or close,
- 1:49:17Boston does it all right, we're going to turn it on to Boston again,
- 1:49:20and four on a held out, four roots.
- 1:49:22Eight to seven to score, as Brett gives up his first hit and first run of the game.
- 1:49:28Got the sign out in order in the fifth inning, but doubles by Broham or Evans.
- 1:49:32Here's Boston, late eight-seven, here's Wood Thompson.
- 1:49:36Evans, four on the eyes, and he leaves away from second base, the pitch,
- 1:49:40blowing inside ball one.
- 1:49:43Angels getting a right-hander ready, Paul Hartsall in the bullpen.
- 1:49:49We're in the sixth inning, Boston eight, the Angels seven, both sides nine hits.
- 1:49:53The curve ball is way outside ball two.
- 1:49:56One of the things that that big close left field wall do to left-handers
- 1:50:01is make you pitch delicately, and then sometimes you get behind,
- 1:50:04you have to draw a strike, and they're sitting on your pitches and really take good cuts.
- 1:50:09Not been ready to swing two at all.
- 1:50:11The Angels are in the second, no one out, Boston six, pitch, taken for a strike, short one.
- 1:50:19Boston with the best record in baseball, 39 wins and only 19 losses.
- 1:50:24They lead the game to five-six.
- 1:50:26The Angels 30 wins, 27 losses, but they're only one and a half out of first place in the West.
- 1:50:31The pitch, curve ball, hop shot, playable.
- 1:50:34First baseman, Fairleigh, in foul territory.
- 1:50:36He makes the catch, leaning back to his right as the wind brought it towards their territory.
- 1:50:41So Hartsall fouls out, unable to move the runner to third, and with one out, Rick Berlton steps up.
- 1:50:48Right-handed hitting shortstop as a single, fly to center, and then fly to deep center.
- 1:50:52A good one-handed catch made by Potsdock right against the wall.
- 1:51:01Can Brett look to get the sign from his catcher downing as Evans leads from second base?
- 1:51:08Brett says yes to the sign, looks to second, and the pitch.
- 1:51:12That ball over the blow, one and all.
- 1:51:14On deck is Fred Lim.
- 1:51:19The getters from the game, Evans with a free run homer and an RBI double driving in fourth.
- 1:51:24Joe Rudy three for three to knock in three.
- 1:51:27The pitch, outside ball two, but Lin with a free run glass.
- 1:51:33To left field, the left-handed hitter as he homers to left field at Anaheim Stadium to win Boston the ball again in the ninth inning at Anaheim a week ago.
- 1:51:42So Berlton waits for the two-all pitch.
- 1:51:46Brett steps, here it comes.
- 1:51:58Oh, they had a good shot at Evans.
- 1:52:01The throw was 30 feet at the third-date line.
- 1:52:04If Landow throws and he has a great arm anywhere near the plate, Evans is out.
- 1:52:09And third-date coach Eddie Yost took real liberties on Landow on that play and lost it late at nine to seven.
- 1:52:17When Yost was waving Evans home and Evans with a bat he does not run well, he appeared to be doing the angels a favor,
- 1:52:23but Landow's throw sailed way up the third-date line and there was no chance to get him.
- 1:52:29Now Brett gives up a couple of runs and on the throw, Berlton is in scoring position nine to seven.
- 1:52:37Where were we then? Here's Fred Lind, one out.
- 1:52:40Three-round homer and his three-click.
- 1:52:42He's also wide-out, rounded out.
- 1:52:44The pitch, throwing outside.
- 1:52:47Now Brett falling behind Berlton, two and oh, and Berlton just went right where that bat ball landed to right field.
- 1:52:54Iso continuing to throw in the ankle pin, all this flat on the box and half of that right field area.
- 1:53:02That looks back a second to pit, curveball mounted, short, Schalk is up with it, his very throw just in time, two away.
- 1:53:10Lin out short to first, brings up designated hitter Jim Wright and also brings Jim Fragosi
- 1:53:18and stuff down into the pockets of his warm-up jacket, onto the field, starts at the foul line on his way to the mound.
- 1:53:25And it looks as if he's going to go to both ends and counter Wright with Hartzell or will he walk Wright
- 1:53:33and take the chance to left-hander Brett again to Sturmski.
- 1:53:38He's asking Brett for that step question now.
- 1:53:41Berlton at second base, two out.
- 1:53:44Boston with two back in the fifth inning, to lead nine-seven.
- 1:53:51Brett stays and we'll see if Wright hits.
- 1:53:57That's a tough choice. You want Jim Wright and then all you have to do is get down to Sturmski and he hits left-hander.
- 1:54:08Wright a home run away from twenty for the year.
- 1:54:12And he'll not swing, they're going to walk in intentionally.
- 1:54:15So, turning it out with Brett and Fragosi, meeting at the line and they have decided to walk Wright.
- 1:54:21Wright is over three, Hartzell crowded out and struck out.
- 1:54:26Brett walking in first man.
- 1:54:29Man's going now, but you'll soon hear a cheer that said it's Wright's walk because they know they've got King Kyle Yosemite waiting for that next ball free outside.
- 1:54:40In the inning, doubled by Berlhamer and Evans. Arkin found out that Berlton singled in a run.
- 1:54:46One-second of a serve on the plate and Lynn has turned it out. Wright's walk, this time to Sturmski.
- 1:54:56The intentional walk in the top half of the inning as the Red Sox walk Bob Sox to fill the bases.
- 1:55:01Back right is Broody, singled in two runs.
- 1:55:09He has a 290 average, three home runs, 28 runs better than he's rounded, twice the grit in a long.
- 1:55:17Left hander against left hander with Carlson Piss doing it.
- 1:55:21Two outs, two runs, nine to seven Boston.
- 1:55:25Brett steps, checks the runners, good hit. Outside ball in, that's four.
- 1:55:33Yes, as he continues his brilliant career, building up on the all-time list in so many categories.
- 1:55:45He steps out of the batting spot, he's now 37th all-time and runs scores, 30th in total hits, 17th in doubles tied with Ted Williams, 17th all-time.
- 1:55:5724th in all runs, takes it way outside ball two, a third ball.
- 1:56:03That's the 369 homer, gets empty, gets tied for number 24 with Ralph Snyder and he's only one behind the man in the 23rd spot, the late Joe Hunter.
- 1:56:13He's 22nd in RBI, just three behind Billy Williams.
- 1:56:19And in extra bay pitch, only 18 minutes in Major League history has collected more extra bay flows than he has.
- 1:56:27And he's just one behind the man in the 18th position, Billy Williams.
- 1:56:31So you're talking about Hall of Fame names when you compare the answers position, all-time and all those offensive columns.
- 1:56:39And he's got two main to boards and he's waiting for a two-hole pitch.
- 1:56:43And you know he's swinging if he likes it.
- 1:56:46He's ready, so is Red. The Bits, we're at a high pop while out of play.
- 1:56:50He got a fast ball and took quite a rip.
- 1:56:54Two and one. Red starts scoring in bunches.
- 1:56:59The three in the second are four in the fourth and they have two already in the sixth.
- 1:57:03The Eagles have thrown up there a couple of threes and they've stuck in the first in the sixth inning along with a Singleton in the fifth.
- 1:57:12Rolfe in the second, right to first. The action fits two and one, here it comes.
- 1:57:16Swing to the left, a change and he has out in front.
- 1:57:21All right, game two of this short two-game series.
- 1:57:25Chris Knapp, the angle right-hander, sits in fourth against right-hander Jim Wright of Watson, making a rare start.
- 1:57:35Two and two, two on, two off the pitch.
- 1:57:37Four on and a bounce in the first. Fairly gets a take off and takes it to the bag and the inning is over.
- 1:57:42The Reds, however, take the lead as they score two runs on three hits and leave a pair.
- 1:57:47After six innings in Boston, Red starts nine, angle seven.
- 1:57:55After six offensive innings here at Sidenway Park, Boston, the total three this way.
- 1:58:02Boston nine runs, ten hits, four errors, four left. Angle seven runs, nine hits, one error, eight men stranded.
- 1:58:10Dick Grego, it's his game as he comes out of the ten and it's Ken Reds ball game for the Angels.
- 1:58:15Grego in, the seventh inning, Rolfe, fairly chalked and downing to Ken Bergow with Ken, a producer in New York, Nelson from Sidenway Park, Boston.
- 1:58:27Beautiful summer's evening, fell out fast and they've been thoroughly entertained.
- 1:58:33If you like Dick's battle, well this is the antithesis, who's going to finally get off the canvas glass and have his hand raised to victory?
- 1:58:41Let's go to the seventh, here's now.
- 1:58:43Alright Dick, I'm sure if you're an Angels fan, you're wondering one thing right now, what kind of Dick Grego is this on the mound?
- 1:58:50Is this the new Dick Grego or the old Dick Grego?
- 1:58:53Well, when we're trying to remember the ice and score, when the Angels had difficulty out of the bullpen.
- 1:58:58And the new one, a badly, is doing well for the Boston Reds on the two and one record, a 1.66 ERA and six saves to his credit.
- 1:59:06He faces the Angels in the seventh, the first pick to fastball away to Ron Felle, ball one.
- 1:59:12Felling in the game has two hits and three trips, a single and a double.
- 1:59:17The Angels matching the Boston Reds on for Boston, going in front in their half of the sixth and they lead nine to seven.
- 1:59:25Now Felle requests time and is granted it by home plate umpire, Russ Gett.
- 1:59:29If I can remind you, the crew tonight has brevigan over his first base, Dale Ford is at second and Joe Brinkman at third.
- 1:59:36The pitch, swinging and a miss, this time the guy wants a change and the gap is one and one to Felle.
- 1:59:42Ron Felle hitting against the kind of pitcher you like to see a right-hander has difficulty against left-handed pitching.
- 1:59:51Statistically at least, that's primarily due to the fact you don't see it that often because they'll take him out.
- 1:59:58Swing and a foul back, count one and two.
- 2:00:03The Angels jumping out in front with three runs in the first, they strand the three men also in the first.
- 2:00:10The Reds are dancing with three in the second and then had four in the fourth.
- 2:00:16The Angels with one in the fifth and then tied it with three in their half of the sixth.
- 2:00:21The Reds are to jump back out in front again with two more in the last of the sixth.
- 2:00:25Nine to seven Boston, nobody else fairly leading off into seventh.
- 2:00:29Playing on a high fly ball, playable, medium depth right field.
- 2:00:33Under it is Devin, then he makes the catch under the night sky.
- 2:00:37The Bailey flies out to the right fielder, Evans, and we remind you that Angels...
- 2:00:44...
- 2:01:01One out of his jumps, choking up, right hand hitter.
- 2:01:04Swing and a line drive and it is Ricky Yosinski, glides to the line to make the catch.
- 2:01:10Yosinski playing left field like Van Kuyver plays the piano.
- 2:01:18He knows every inch of that territory and he just moves over to the line.
- 2:01:22Good position on Schonk right off the bat and as a result the line drive out by Dave Schonk and the two going into seventh.
- 2:01:29The two members tied, here is the catch.
- 2:01:32The number nine hitter from California, Brian Downing.
- 2:01:35The great goal number nine, full speed of an over, he rocks, here comes the first pitch, inside and high, ball one.
- 2:01:41Downing holds a few players tonight without a hit.
- 2:01:46He is flyed out, bounced out, and hit into a six, four, three double play.
- 2:01:51One on the referee is up high, one, now it's two and oh to Brian Downing.
- 2:01:57The Red Sox is using Draco, he is the third pitcher that they've utilized tonight.
- 2:02:04Lee started with five, Stanley two-thirds and now Draco off.
- 2:02:09He winds the two-all pitch, inside Downing checking his swing.
- 2:02:17Three and oh to Downing.
- 2:02:19The two off, the Red Sox can feel back, off and back and third, relative to short, row hammered second, and Scott over at first.
- 2:02:29This behind the play, flashing the sign, let's see if Downing is going to play it out.
- 2:02:33The best thing he's taking is strikes.
- 2:02:36The angels, need a base runner to get on board and see what the following hitters can do.
- 2:02:44Downing, taking, and it's three and one.
- 2:02:48Draco, rock to the motion, three one pitch, a five or four.
- 2:02:52Brian Downing with a two-arm walk.
- 2:02:55Draco, that's the first walk that he has issued.
- 2:02:58And here's the top of the order, Kenny Landru.
- 2:03:02Landru couldn't give a workout in right field, had difficulty with the throw.
- 2:03:07The last half inning, with a gun demand out to play, he has a very strong arm, strongest arm of the team, but it was too accurate.
- 2:03:15The throw is 20 feet up the line, and a run score.
- 2:03:19Landru, offensively, has not created a double, but bonds.
- 2:03:26Draco, a slow set, down to the weight and the pitch, fastball in the outside corner, it calls strike one.
- 2:03:35Dick Draco on in relief for Stanley, who in turn believes middle league.
- 2:03:40Nine, seven, Boston, top of the seven, Fenway, March.
- 2:03:45The Red Sox, best record in baseball, 20 games above 500.
- 2:03:49The pitch, to the line drive, hit down that line, in that field, it was dropped in front of Yosemkes, holding and second base is Downing.
- 2:03:55A strong throw behind the runner, but Downing retreats to second ahead of the throw.
- 2:04:00So the angels were two out for the pair of middle arms.
- 2:04:04Downing walks, and then Kenny Landru picks up his first hit of the night, a line drive, single, to that field.
- 2:04:11And here's Bob Rich.
- 2:04:13Rich is 33 times up, retired, he grounded out, and he popped out the short twice.
- 2:04:20His last time up, the singles.
- 2:04:26Bobby with a chance to imprint upon the angels, Chancers, as they trail by a pair of two out, two head on, seventh inning, the pitch.
- 2:04:34Playing on a high fly ball, playable, shallow right field, coming on his Evans, going on and dropping the ball into second base is Brohamer.
- 2:04:42One run scored, the Downing comes in, Landru holds over third base, Rich goes to second base.
- 2:04:48And the air will be tied to Brohamer, who went out, as Brohamer and Scott, and the right-giver Evans, are first on the ball.
- 2:04:58Brohamer tried to pick it up over his shoulder, and he dropped the ball.
- 2:05:02So the angels stay alive, a run score, they are within one run of the Boston Red Sox, on the air by Jax Brohamer.
- 2:05:11Actually, it could have been Dwight Evans' ball, now he was there, could have caught it, but Brohamer calling all the way.
- 2:05:16And with the win, hitting the ball back toward right-fetter, it just kind of carried enough, it went off his fingertips.
- 2:05:22And Landru may have pushed it an angle, he should have scored with two outs, that ball hit high enough, and with Landru's feet from first base, he should have been able to score on it.
- 2:05:31But stopped at third, and now, Rick Smith, the angels' trainer, Simpson trainer, and Jim Fregalski, for the post-game, back him out there to see if he's alright.
- 2:05:39But the game did the equal again, that's five Boston errors, and yet Boston still leads, 9-8.
- 2:05:46And this is the charm of Bentley Park, of course you're always in the game, but it's always generally a wild game, and an intentional pass up coming along with Boxock, with first baseman, second time in a row.
- 2:05:56And now, that Don Jimmender has ordered up an intentional pass to Boxock, he bypassed him in the sixth to pitch to Joe Rudy, and Rudy came up with two RBIs and a single.
- 2:06:10So Dick Grego, dealing out back to left-hand, hitting Boxock, the right-hander on the mound to pitch to the right-hander, Joe Rudy.
- 2:06:17Grego again set, and deals outside, and at ball four, as Boxock underhands the back to the fungo circle dealer, what ball for station identification? This is Angels Radio, 78.
- 2:06:29This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 2:06:33SCN, to their tone.
- 2:06:44They have a inning of play. Boston, Massachusetts, Fenway, marks the Angels' bump, with a bump for trailing by a run, 9-8.
- 2:06:52They have Kenny Landrow at third, Bobby Gritch at second, Ryman, Boxock at first, and Joe Rudy at the plate.
- 2:06:59Rudy in the game is three for three. He has doubled, he has two singles, and he has won.
- 2:07:07Rudy with a closed stand, right-hand hitter, leading at the plate. Grego, leaning on the mound, looking in for the sign from Carlton Fitz, still looking.
- 2:07:15Now Rudy says, that's too much time for me. And he steps up, requesting time from guests.
- 2:07:22Now Grego and Rudy now in a battle of nerves, as the Angels try to move back to at least high, or perhaps take the lead.
- 2:07:32They are down by a run, 9-8, in the seventh. And again, Rudy says, to heck with it. And Getsch just waves his hands and says, well, come on, you might as well throw the ball sooner or later.
- 2:07:42Now going out is Carlton Fitz, the drop to Dick Grego, with the paternal hand placed on his shoulder.
- 2:07:49The mass split up on top of his head. And now the Red Sox shortstop, Burlinson, also in.
- 2:07:56There is activity now in the bullpen again for the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:08:06Bill Campbell, the expensive release pitcher, creates an uptame by Boston. He is warming up.
- 2:08:15Mesa voted for the Angels. Rudy's still waiting on the first pitch.
- 2:08:20Grego on the mound, thus far has been not too anxious to deliver it. The glove slowly to the belt. The pitch. A high strike.
- 2:08:31Looks like it might have been on the side though, a fast ball.
- 2:08:354-1 to Rudy. Landrell at third. Bobby Gritch at second.
- 2:08:41Lineman, Sox, at first. On the mound, Dick Grego. The third Red Sox pitcher used tonight. 9-8 Boston, in the seventh.
- 2:08:51Rudy getting set up to play. Close stand, waving the wood back and forth. Grego set.
- 2:08:59The kick and the pitch. Up high, and it's 1-1.
- 2:09:04Jim Bragosi yelling from the ankle, Grego, that's the same place as the one you just saw the strike. He's really sparking at Red's get.
- 2:09:10First one, good look high.
- 2:09:13Now Dick Grego has six saves thus far. A sparkling ERA.
- 2:09:19But he is well aware of what can happen at Fenway Park. He told us last year when he was an Angel and came to this park, the world give it and the world take it away.
- 2:09:28Grego set. The 1-1 pitch. Sweet give of this.
- 2:09:32That one outside slider. Grego now ahead, 1-2. Rudy steps out of the bat his box. Hounds the dirt from his spike.
- 2:09:44He glances down the third base to Coach McNamara. There's Kenny Landrell off the back and foul to a throw.
- 2:09:52Bridge off about five, six, seven steps over his second. Simon Botstock clapping his hands. And off to the edge of that quarter circle. The cut out.
- 2:10:02In the diamond over first base. Rudy at the plate.
- 2:10:07He has jumped up a bit on the bat with two strikes. Grego set. The 1-2 pitch. Inside. 2-2 to Rudy.
- 2:10:19Fenway Park. The scene of this game between the Angels and the Red Sox. A packed house on a gorgeous night. The wind blowing out. The temperature game time 70 degrees.
- 2:10:30A strong wind blowing out towards that green monster in left field.
- 2:10:35And what a digit. Weathering the scoreboard tonight. 9-8 Boston. 10 hits for each team. Five errors by the Red Sox. One error by the Angels.
- 2:10:45Bases loaded. A 2-2 cap to Gil Rudy. Two outs. In the seventh. Grego set. The slowest set. Super belt. And the plate. Swing and a tap or foul. Wide of the first base line.
- 2:11:00And the others now always drink to their respective bases. Landrell back to third and Bits back to second and Botstock back to first.
- 2:11:11The tension continues in Fenway Park where the Angels are trying to get off on the right foot on a 14-game road trip. The Boston Red Sox are trying to begin their longest halt stand of the year in the correct fashion.
- 2:11:27Boston the team that's been hot 20 games above the 500 bucks. 39-19 the best record in Major League Baseball. The Angels three games above 500 and a game and a half out of first place in the West.
- 2:11:41Grego set. The bases loaded. 2-2 pick inside as Rudy has to reel back a bit. Back pedal out of the way. The cap now full. No fouls to Gil Pedrago or Gil Rudy. And the crowd revving up in Boston.
- 2:12:01Gil Rudy slowly making his way back toward the batter's box. The tuck of the helmet. Zipping the bat. Climbing that back foot. Grego. His pivot foot on the rubber. Time call until Rudy gets established. He's ready to go.
- 2:12:21Grego looking for the sign from Carlton Smith. Bases loaded. Two outs. Angels down. 9-8. The pitch. Playing in a high fly ball. Playable right field. Evan Buster is looking off that.
- 2:12:37Grego touched up for a line. End of seven. But he retires the side with the bases loaded. And gets out of a very big jam in the seventh inning. And at the end of six and a half in Boston is correct on nine and the Angels eight.
- 2:12:58The attendance announced tonight at Fenway Park. The capacity is 33,513 and they're not far from that. 31,612 on hand to watch the Angels and the Boston Red Sox in the 9-8 game.
- 2:13:14The Red Sox with that one run in. Now just like the North, those 2,000 empty seats are about 10-5 in it. That's true. Great baseball fans in Boston. They're attracted by a team that's just headed to a ballpark that produces high scoring, exciting games and they're getting one tonight.
- 2:13:32They've always had competitive teams. They build a rough card and take advantage of this very intimate park here at Fenway. They get their stars. They keep them for a long, long time. Carlton Smith is a testimony to that.
- 2:13:47His teammate Carlton Smith will lead off in the seventh. He'll be followed by Jordan Scott who went away to Milwaukee then returned to Boston. And then Jack Groenemann who's been both hero and joke tonight. A new pitcher for the Angels in the seventh. It's Paul Harkill relieving Ken Brett.
- 2:14:02The first pitch is a little high at his ballpark. Carlton Smith in the game today is 0-3. Harkill winds in the fifth. Swing and a miss on a breaking ball. Harkill's record, 1-4, is DRA 3.59. He has five saves to his credit.
- 2:14:24And of course yesterday in Anaheim, it's the final two innings in that victory over the New York Yankees. This way, Harkill delivers breaking ball low and outside. Scooped up by downing out of the dirt, 2-1.
- 2:14:41The Angels three in the first, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, and one in the seventh. The Boston Red Sox three in the second, four in the fourth, two in the sixth, the fifth. Swing and a high chopper into the shortstop Dave Sharp. He goes across the diamond in time. And there's one going for Boston in the seventh.
- 2:15:00Carlton Smith, his guy, put in the fourth, six, three. And here's the boomer, Scott. George Scott. Scott is not here to home run today, but he's just a dent. He is 2-3 for the Paris Singles to Angier.
- 2:15:18Scott holds that bat high and takes a strike on the outside corner of breaking ball, a home run. Scott off to a slow start, only three home runs through the first two and a half run. Swing and a fly ball, hits the level line in right field. Over to make a running catch is Kenny Landruh. He easily puts it away, two going.
- 2:15:41The Angels, although they have four nine runs, check that eight runs tonight, they have wrecked a lot of men on the basin. They were put down in the first half of their score three runs and wrecked with a basin loaded. They left three more in the sixth and three more in the seventh. One in the third, one in the fifth.
- 2:16:04They've lost the restarts a bit more efficient. They've shot at only four, back for the inside corner. And Rohammer lifts his arms out of the way. Rohammer hits them hard at the plate, not so hard defensively.
- 2:16:16A costly air, the last half of it. But at the plate, he is three for three with a pair of singles and a double. Rohammer now at this safely 11th straight game. Breaking ball is inside. And Rohammer at the plate, one and one.
- 2:16:36Boston Reds on clinging to a one-run lead, nine to eight, the pitch. Inside, two and one to Rohammer.
- 2:16:48The Reds on flexing their most brutal, the pair of three-run home runs. And that has helped out in this game. That's for, this is the outside edge, three and one. A three-run home run by Evans in the second. And then the three-run blast to the opposite field by Fred Lynn in the fourth.
- 2:17:06Bolts into the net over the green markers. Winger to the bounding course, the first base for the high jumper at the eyes. Fairly underhand, too hard to lead time. It's a one-two-three inning. A rarity tonight. One-two-three to Boston Reds.
- 2:17:18The Red Sox strong, the
- 2:17:18final six, and it'll know how to handle it. At the end of seven, it's nine to eight Boston. Offense, Boston tonight in Fenway Park where it's nine to eight Boston. The Red Sox nine runs, ten hits, five errors. The Angels eight runs, ten hits, and one error. It's the double of each inning of play and the Angels will send up Jackson, Redsman, and then Fairly.
- 2:17:38We bring to the mic Dick Enberg. Thank you, Al. Dick Drago. It's his ball game and he's picked very well for Boston all season long. He's doing much harder than when he performed as an Angel last year. He was traded to Baltimore one-to-one for Ryany Enterdyer Miller. And then played out his contract and signed with the Boston Red Sox. Ron Jackson will try to eight-inning a nine-eight score. Boston in front of it. A strike on the inside corner. Jackson a single, Ryan's got a double play, stable to fuel his choice and hit by a pitch.
- 2:18:08Second to Ross Carullo in the American League batting derby with a.357 average entering the game. Right-hander against right-hander. The Rocks back and here's the pitch by Drago. Swing and a foul, tip, 0-2.
- 2:18:18Merve Rettman on deck and then we're on Fairly. schedule here on the top of the eighth. East side with ten hits. Boston, the number one fielding team in the American League. Has committed five errors tonight but still lead by one.
- 2:18:32Of the Angels, eight runs, seven on earth. Drago gets his nine from Cowden fifth. Rocks back and here comes the pitch. High and outside, one and two. Drago in fifth with Hops and a third.
- 2:18:46The girls in the shorts, Brohamer and Scott on the right side of the box and then field the hands and left, lin and center, Evans and Wright. 31,652. Page here at Fenway as Drago's one-two pitch on his way. Almost did it, did. Nick, Ron Jackson, he's the board. He is on. Hesitating with Russ Gets and then finally says, Jeff, you're on.
- 2:19:07No argument from Cowden fifth. So Jackson has set 10 to every pitch anyway. Gets nicked in the left shoulder by Nick Drago and the Angels have the lead off eight on here in the eighth inning.
- 2:19:19You think circuses are fun and carnivals are fun? You've got to enjoy baseball at Fenway.
- 2:19:36Nick Drago with Merv Retman settling in, watches John McNamara, the Angels third base. Got to go back to his position after a visit with Retman. The Angels play the tie of the game here in the eighth inning.
- 2:19:48Retman is hitless tonight over three. He was up there with a base as far as a six inning and flying to set a field. That was Drago who got that out.
- 2:19:57Right-hander settles at the waist, hits Retman inside a fat ball. He was not running. Fairly is on deck. Angels led by Throes, Joe Rudy's three hits, Jack Brohamer with three hits for Boston.
- 2:20:12But the big swings have come from Dwight Evans, a three run homer and an RBI double and Fred Ledges only hit tonight as a three run homer.
- 2:20:20The game is tied to eight, Boston. Drago, veteran right-hander, uses that little stair-step, seance system as he gets to the waist, the pitches outside and low.
- 2:20:29Gets started to call it a strike and got his hand caught on the chest protector. Two and over count.
- 2:20:39Alan Ripley and Bill Campbell are throwing in the Boston bullpen. Two right-handers, Campbell of course the ace of a Boston penland year.
- 2:20:52Jackson, good runner at first eight. And only a man, two and 0 to count on Murr Retman, infield set for two.
- 2:20:59He's going to go deliberately at the waist, the pitch, inside corner, a fat ball on Retman, throws his hand up and the catch. He thought that was bull three. Two and one to count.
- 2:21:09Calvin Fitt taps out of the couch and kind of walks out a little huckle full on his legs and gets cramped sitting down there so long.
- 2:21:16Drago does take a lot of time between pitches. His legs can go to sleep on him if you're a catcher in that squat.
- 2:21:22The action pitch two and one. Kind red at first, no one out in the eighth inning, Boston nine, the angels eight.
- 2:21:29Drago is ready. Over the shoulder, look at the runner at first. Here comes the pitch.
- 2:21:33Swinging a foul out of play. That's up on the roof on the first base side.
- 2:21:38Two balls, two strikes to Retman. The launch in the first inning, save on an error in the third. Out on a good play by Brilson in the hole in the fifth.
- 2:21:45And fly to shallow center to Fred Lind with the bases loaded in the sixth.
- 2:21:50The angels have had plenty of opportunity.
- 2:21:54And with all the hits and runs scored, the key statistic of the game, left arm baked, angels 11, Boston four.
- 2:22:01Jackson has his lead. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 2:22:05Playing a little ground ball up the middle. Up with it, Brilson. He goes to second for one and that's all they'll get.
- 2:22:10And save at first on a field that starts to Dretman. Gammed on the flight, didn't get it hard enough for the double play.
- 2:22:17That brings up Ron Fairley, the veteran first baseman, and the two-run single. And he doubles in the sixth inning in score.
- 2:22:24Two for ball for Fairley.
- 2:22:27Good job, a solid job as always with the angels and even with that long distance to right field.
- 2:22:31And it's a tough right field, 380 behind the right fielder.
- 2:22:34If you pull the ball sharply, you can get a fairly easy home run.
- 2:22:37But you have to hit it about 15 feet from that foul ball because that ball angles sharply down into the corner.
- 2:22:44Infield, set for two so that gives Fairley a hole on the right side to pull the ball, Scott holding on Dretman.
- 2:22:51The angels lose a half step and speed at first in exchange of Jackson and Dretman.
- 2:22:57Set by Dregold at the waist for pitch.
- 2:23:01Frank, outside runner, good fat ball.
- 2:23:06The final for Baltimore Orioles, they're going to 11th in a row, 5-4 against Seattle, 5-8 and 0 for the Birds, four runs, 10 hits for the Mariners.
- 2:23:17Don, stand up.
- 2:23:19And a release for Kipi Martinez, got the save.
- 2:23:22Martinez going to win the winner, Colbert won it by a peloton.
- 2:23:25The 0-1 pitch, swing the foul pitch, caught by Fisk and right hander Drego quickly in front on the count, two strikes on Fairley.
- 2:23:33They have 15,212 to welcome Baltimore home from a great road trip.
- 2:23:37They were 9-1 on the road and they win tonight 5-4 against Seattle.
- 2:23:43They've gone from three games under 500 to eight above in the last two weeks.
- 2:23:52Drego has his time from 5th, Dretman the safely to first base.
- 2:23:56Here's the pitch, high, a fat ball, two and one, one and two, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:24:02Gator joined his late, the Angels got three in the first off-starter bill lead,
- 2:24:06but the Red Sox came back with a three-run home run by Dwight Evans, off-starter Tom Griffin to tie in the second.
- 2:24:12Then in the fourth when the Angels come up to double play ball, they would have gotten Griffin out of the inning.
- 2:24:16The Red Sox went on to score four, three of them on Fred Limb's old run.
- 2:24:19Angels one and a fifth, three and a sixth.
- 2:24:22They tied the game at seven, but the Red Sox scored two and a sixth, the Angels back with one and a seventh.
- 2:24:27Down nine-eighths, the fifth, swinging a shot by the diving Pro Hammer in the right field for a base hit.
- 2:24:32Holding it first was Dretman to make sure the ball was in front.
- 2:24:35He now goes to second and the Angels have the time and go ahead, runners aboard with one out of the eighth inning
- 2:24:41and barely sends a low-line drive just out of the reach to the glove side of Pro Hammer for his third hit of the night.
- 2:24:48Here's Dave Chalk a bun single and ground out safe on an error, and he lined out the yards and left his last time up.
- 2:24:55Got to get a little nervous in the crowd of Fenway partisans.
- 2:25:01Don Zimmer right up on that dugout step, staring out at Dick Drago.
- 2:25:07Chalk up on the handle of the bat, Madman powered to try to move the ball around, keep it in play.
- 2:25:11Dallin right is Evans, a base hit to the right, I don't think Dretman can score.
- 2:25:15Hugging the line and Dallin assert his hop-in, hit by Drago on the outside corner for a strike.
- 2:25:21Drago jumps in front of Thalia on two, but the veterans work just a one and two and then rifle the singles.
- 2:25:27Dretman in scoring position at second base.
- 2:25:31The Angels now vouch it for Austin 11-10.
- 2:25:35Chalk at 291, hit around the season.
- 2:25:38Choked up about as much as anyone in the league now, way up on the handle.
- 2:25:42Drago ready, the pick. Outside, a breaking ball, one and one.
- 2:25:47Brian Downing would be next.
- 2:25:50Again, the Angels without Charney Lampert and his replacement from the Pacific Coast, the Dave McNamara,
- 2:25:55a deep three, stolen 20 bases already this year, at least, with ECL and hitting 380.
- 2:26:00Will probably report here in Boston to the club tomorrow.
- 2:26:03So the Angels are without Lampert and Baylor with a hamstring ball.
- 2:26:06Maybe they're two best power right-handed hitters in this ballpark.
- 2:26:11One-one hit, low, two and one.
- 2:26:13That's really short-changing yourselves to be without that kind of box in Fenway.
- 2:26:19And to that, Terry Humphrey's shoulder.
- 2:26:22The Angels catchers, and he's done on the bench.
- 2:26:25Jim Brugosi, like dealing out the cards, a seven-card polter and you only get five-cards.
- 2:26:31He'll try to keep the opposition.
- 2:26:33Quite exaggeration, but that's what's the Al Brugosi deal.
- 2:26:36Runners at first and second, two-one hit, chalk piles it away.
- 2:26:40Off to the right and Lam in a photographer well, off the guy box section,
- 2:26:45and skips up into that two-three row of the seat.
- 2:26:49That accommodates the man at San Diego Fenway, but basically the only one-feared park him a major league.
- 2:27:00Left-hander Dave LaRoche starts to throw in the Angel bullpen.
- 2:27:05And the two right-handers Ripley and Campbell still at work behind Rego for Boston.
- 2:27:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:27:11Ripley leads from second, barely off-first.
- 2:27:14Drake going to wait, the pitch.
- 2:27:16Outside, ball three.
- 2:27:18He went three and two with the bases loaded to Rudy in the last inning before Rudy flied out.
- 2:27:23And the drama at Fenway tonight has been superb.
- 2:27:26No matter which side you're pulling for, I don't know if you've fans listening early morning hours in other parts of the world,
- 2:27:34this is a baseball delight.
- 2:27:37Like sitting yourself down at the table and they just keep bringing the food, all your favorites.
- 2:27:42And to eighth, Boston.
- 2:27:44Rego backs off the rubber.
- 2:27:47Rettman being alerted by Machamer.
- 2:27:51He's got to hurry now, those good outfielders for Boston on a base hit.
- 2:27:54Barely off-first.
- 2:27:57And the three to pitch.
- 2:27:58Roo and the bases are loaded.
- 2:28:02One out, shot to first, barely to second, and Rettman to third.
- 2:28:09And the bases loaded time and time again this evening.
- 2:28:13Great time ending an inning with three minute more.
- 2:28:16And they've got him drunk again.
- 2:28:20Here comes Tony Salida to bat for Brian Downing.
- 2:28:25Salida, the powerful Samoan, who has done a great job coming off the bench.
- 2:28:31And it's been the angel's top ten hitters.
- 2:28:34He's up there with one out.
- 2:28:36Not much speed, so he's a good double play man.
- 2:28:39But as strong as anyone in that angel dugout.
- 2:28:43And has the power to even the fool to go to left field and get the monster.
- 2:28:54Like time against Boston.
- 2:28:56Salida is hitting three fifty.
- 2:28:59And as soon as he's introduced, Zimmer comes out of the dugout before he gets to the foul line.
- 2:29:05And he waves with the right hand, because he wants Bill Campbell to come in from the bullpen.
- 2:29:10So Campbell will be the fourth Boston Pitcher of the night.
- 2:29:18Here's the spot where Tom Bergmeyer, the left-hander, was not throwing.
- 2:29:22Zimmer had two right-handers, so he cannot counter with the left-hander.
- 2:29:25He's going to go with Campbell, who has an excellent screwball, and his tough on left-handers.
- 2:29:30So Drago goes out, picks himself out of two bases loaded jams.
- 2:29:35One left for him by Bob Stanley in the sixth, and one of his own in the seventh.
- 2:29:40And he leaves with the bases loaded.
- 2:29:42And Campbell is carted in from the right center field bullpen area.
- 2:29:45With a break in the action, let's go on Al Witt.
- 2:29:48Hi Dick, you can take a time.
- 2:29:50That walk to chalk was the seventh given up by Boston pitching plus two hit batters.
- 2:29:58So that's nine more base runners plus five errors plus 11 hits.
- 2:30:02To give the Angels eight runs, still thought Goodenbilt to be in front.
- 2:30:06Boston has nine, and Bill Campbell, the bearded right-hander, begins turning up with Cantor Calvin fifth.
- 2:30:12He has a good screwball, and around the batting cage before the game tonight,
- 2:30:17some of the Red Sox players commenting on what a good screw he had in Seattle his last alley.
- 2:30:21So he's got four men and two perfect relief innings.
- 2:30:25The tying run for the Angels with one out is represented by Merv Rettman standing in third
- 2:30:30in conversation with his coach John Maximera.
- 2:30:34Ron Fairley, the veteran, is at second base.
- 2:30:37And Dave Chalk at first.
- 2:30:39Tony Salida has been hitting around 400 off the bench,
- 2:30:43but his season average doesn't reflect that because overall he's hitting 245.
- 2:30:48One home run and nine runs batted in.
- 2:30:54Campbell, the ace of the full-center Boston the last couple of years,
- 2:30:58although he's had some rough outings this year, and his ERA reflects that.
- 2:31:035.40, base is full, Enfield looking for two to pitch to Salida.
- 2:31:07High ball in.
- 2:31:10Campbell, two wins.
- 2:31:12Check that, his ERA is higher than that.
- 2:31:147.24 for Campbell.
- 2:31:16Two wins and four bosses he's saved, too.
- 2:31:18So he has not pitched that way.
- 2:31:20He's only worked his 13th and two thirds innings.
- 2:31:23Ninety-fourths, Salida waits.
- 2:31:25Campbell to the plate.
- 2:31:26To the outside of the hole, ball two.
- 2:31:30Two balls, no strikes, and now Salida hits with his third base touch
- 2:31:34to see if that green light is flashing.
- 2:31:37The outfield, playing Salida with respect.
- 2:31:40Deep in the right is Evers.
- 2:31:41Right center a couple of steps is Lynn.
- 2:31:43Back forward by a warning tap and left in front of the scoreboard gets empty.
- 2:31:46Enfield set for two.
- 2:31:48The two-goal pitch by Campbell.
- 2:31:50Roll, ball three.
- 2:31:53So now Campbell, in a terrible bind, with a base devoted,
- 2:31:58has to throw strikes down 3-0 or walk in the tying run.
- 2:32:03Meanwhile, Salida, if he wanted to, could be sitting on a pitch
- 2:32:07that he could really drive 3-0.
- 2:32:09Ragosi, the gambling manager, he's shown that already,
- 2:32:11the 3-0 pitch strikes across the letters and nearly throws.
- 2:32:15Oh, that was supposed to be ball four.
- 2:32:17What a lettering of the Angels on the front of the great uniform.
- 2:32:22Campbell nervously goes to the round, then back, throws it aside,
- 2:32:25pitches with his cap, wheels to the ground, over his head,
- 2:32:28now rips that right foot on the front edge to the rubber.
- 2:32:30Rettman is third, barely a second, and Dawkins first lead away.
- 2:32:33One out, 9-8 in the eighth inning, the 3-1 pitch.
- 2:32:36Outside and the game is tied.
- 2:32:39That is only the second earned run scored by the Angels in the game,
- 2:32:47and you almost have to bite your tongue saying earned about that one
- 2:32:50because it comes around only one single, a hit battered, a couple of walks.
- 2:32:54The run will be tied to Dick Drago as Rettman walks off with a ninth run,
- 2:32:59a 9-9 tie, and Ken Landrow steps up,
- 2:33:03the un-left-handed hitting right fielder, single this last time up.
- 2:33:06He's one for 40, scored two runs.
- 2:33:09Good speed, a tough man to double up.
- 2:33:11Salida at first, Dawkins second, barely a third,
- 2:33:14outfield toward right, Campbell fifth, and delivers.
- 2:33:17Swing and a miss, and Landrow good start at a breaking ball.
- 2:33:23Ken has one over, and seven runs batted in, starts tonight at 2.47.
- 2:33:27So the Angels led in the first inning when they scored three,
- 2:33:30but after Boston tied in the third,
- 2:33:32the Angels have been playing catch-ups ever since and finally are back even at nine.
- 2:33:36The pitch, right down the middle, and Landrow took a fast ball right there.
- 2:33:41Two strikes on Kenny.
- 2:33:45And the final in from New York, Ron Gendry has done it again.
- 2:33:48He's 10-0, he's shut out Oakland on three hits.
- 2:33:51New York 2, Oakland nothing, so that plays an important role in what happens here tonight.
- 2:33:58The pitch, swing and a miss, he's looking out.
- 2:34:02A through ball against Landrow, and there's two away.
- 2:34:06Nates is still loaded for Bobby Gritton.
- 2:34:12Landrow got to one pitch, a group of three that was set to hit, and caught looking on that.
- 2:34:18That was the second pitch, the fast ball down the middle,
- 2:34:21and a hit on the count of two, Campbell gave him that tough through ball,
- 2:34:24and Landrow couldn't find it.
- 2:34:26Next up then, a hit tonight, he's hit safely a five in a row, he's won for five,
- 2:34:30eight-betting, and Gritton's tough for the sixth time in the game.
- 2:34:33Nine-nine guy, two out, the Angels with a base is full.
- 2:34:36Gritton's waiting, Campbell kicks the deal, third ball, five-all-one.
- 2:34:40Gritton's tough man, he'll make it those strikes.
- 2:34:44Again, Yankees 2, and Oakland nothing, Matt Keele, another fine-ticking job in defeat.
- 2:34:52Heverloh was given a loss, and released, yeah, 2-2.
- 2:34:561-0-10, swinging a foul back.
- 2:34:59Give a retent on the winner, Heverloh and the losers 2-2, they have 27 fouls and 7-21 in New York.
- 2:35:04The Yankee runs came on home runs by Randolph at third, Nettles at fourth, 2-0 New York.
- 2:35:09The Yankees are six behind Boston, Oakland is lost if the Angels could win tonight,
- 2:35:13they'd be only a half game out of first place.
- 2:35:15Currently tied for second with the Texas Rangers one and a half hours.
- 2:35:20Another foul, Cubs at Cincinnati, 3-2, 3-6-0 for Cubs, 2-4-2 for Cincinnati,
- 2:35:25Chicago a game ahead of Philadelphia, and then thanks to the Leafs, East, wins that Cincinnati 3-2.
- 2:35:31Here's the hit to Gritton, step-swing foul, and it goes off to the right as Gritton tries to keep the bat away,
- 2:35:37and that ball hits the handle and comes to the box, he's really one ball, two strikes to Gritton.
- 2:35:44George Foster hit his sixth, eighth, seventh, sixth at his 14th home run of the year, George Foster for Cincinnati.
- 2:35:51That wasn't enough, it's Russell 8-4, he's bottomed 7-1, first loss for Bill Bonham, 30,190 at Cincinnati.
- 2:35:57Here, a 9-9 tie, bases loaded with Angels, 2-0 on the eighth inning of Dolph Campbell,
- 2:36:02ahead of a count of Bobby Gritch one and two.
- 2:36:06Gritch has three home runs and 16 runs batted in.
- 2:36:09He's up on the handle of the bat, trying to guard the play, didn't want to hard someplace.
- 2:36:13Enfield, Aldi, Thompson deep guarding the line at third.
- 2:36:17The outfield straight away, a deep time call, does Campbell take too much time,
- 2:36:20and Fitz is going to go out and make sure that he and his right-handed reliever are in sync.
- 2:36:26A hit batter, a single by Sarley, and a couple of walks have tied the game here on the ninth inning.
- 2:36:32The Angels have scored in each of the last four innings.
- 2:36:35After three in the first inning, shutout to Lafitte when they got one, three in the sixth, one in the seventh, one here in the eighth.
- 2:36:41And we start over again. The Angels with another glorious chance, bases full.
- 2:36:46Gritch out with Lyman, Bostock, two minutes.
- 2:36:49One and two to the count. Campbell, staring, staring, staring, now he has his time.
- 2:36:54The low target and the pitch. Swing and a miss, quick free.
- 2:36:59Gritch commands the turnball, low and outside, and Campbell does some fancy dishes.
- 2:37:04The Angels get a run on a hit, no hands, and for the fourth time in the game,
- 2:37:09I believe the danger loaded, they've ran it 14 minutes.
- 2:37:13After seven and a half, nine, nine times.
- 2:37:22Frank Gilner, Glenn Evans, leads off the eight for Boston, takes the breaking ball low, ball one.
- 2:37:26Hartford working quickly to the fifth.
- 2:37:28We have a shot, the first backhand by Jepson in third territory, the first cross is in time.
- 2:37:33Good he plays.
- 2:37:40And the appreciative Boston fans applaud to the existing third baseman, Ron Jackson,
- 2:37:45who made a dive for the line to backhand that ball.
- 2:37:48In normal conditions, that's a two-base hit, but in a tie game in the late innings,
- 2:37:53that third baseman is sitting right on the line, and even then, Jackson's barely got it.
- 2:37:57And Evans whips it, five-one-hot, first pitch to Hobson outside, a breaking ball.
- 2:38:01Evans, two for four, four out of the eyes, and trying to get something going in the eighth.
- 2:38:05Hobson, grounded weakly to short, charged by Chalk, he goes across the fairway, two away.
- 2:38:12Now for Harsell, who's got to have the most successful pitcher of the game,
- 2:38:16he's just got to go for it.
- 2:38:17And it's an in for an inning and two thirds, and has retired five in an order.
- 2:38:37Burlton takes a fast ball low, ball one, the leadoff man for the Red Sox tonight,
- 2:38:41has singles right and five points to center, once the very deep center field, he's not going to rush.
- 2:38:46Harsell pitches a fast ball in there, one and one.
- 2:38:51A nine-nine tie in Boston.
- 2:38:56Incredible set, we receive ourselves, and at the risk of doing that,
- 2:39:00Angels, 14 left on base, Boston, four.
- 2:39:04The pitch, swinging a miss, good hard slinger in on the hand, Rick Rolton, it's one and two.
- 2:39:10Terry Elfrey, taking over behind the place of the Angels,
- 2:39:12it's a fact that he has a very painful sore shoulder.
- 2:39:16Burlton wants to see the baseball, Harsell lobs it into his canter, and Russ Guetzel,
- 2:39:20like that, veteran played on fire, notes the flaw, and puts a new one in play.
- 2:39:25Burlton with a good eye, he didn't spot nothing.
- 2:39:33Burlton waving the wood, the pitch, swinging a shot to third,
- 2:39:36and there's Jackson playing deep right on the line to glove it, and throwing it out.
- 2:39:40The positioning of the third baseman paid off, two hard hit balls,
- 2:39:44both would have been hit earlier in the game,
- 2:39:46they come out and Jackson fields that hot corner splendidly.
- 2:39:50Three up, three down, after eight and nine-nine ties.
- 2:39:57Bill Campbell warming up with his canter, Calvin Tick, in the ninth inning.
- 2:40:00The right hander will face Honestoc, Rudy, and Jackson of the Angels,
- 2:40:03when Campbell with a base as low as truck out Lambrough has ripped,
- 2:40:07and the eighth inning, those were the first two Boston strikeouts of the evening.
- 2:40:10Bill Lee started, went five innings, allowed 400 runs, fixed it,
- 2:40:13walked two truck outs on Bob Stanley, two firsts of an inning,
- 2:40:16three runs, one earth, three hits, two warts.
- 2:40:18Dick Drago on inning and two firsts, two runs, one earth, two hits,
- 2:40:22three warts, and now Bill Campbell,
- 2:40:25going to walk one and truck out two, three men, he's base coming in,
- 2:40:28with a base as low as an eight inning.
- 2:40:30Vossoc, Bob is three fourths on Vossoc, to the Boston skipper, Timmer,
- 2:40:34trying to hit to him, and the Red Sox have avoided that best they can.
- 2:40:38They've walked him intensely the last two times up.
- 2:40:41He has a single and three trips.
- 2:40:44A 12-game hitting streak for Vossoc.
- 2:40:46Campbell delivers inside with a breaking ball.
- 2:40:50Former teammates for the Minnesota Twins, Bill Campbell and Lyman Vossoc,
- 2:40:53both playing out their contact and signing rich, new deals with their clubs presently.
- 2:41:00True ball lined the right field, but it's going to stay up,
- 2:41:03and Evans is there to make the catch.
- 2:41:06Vossoc on, right field to Dwight Evans.
- 2:41:09That was a true ball. He ran as well.
- 2:41:11He steps out to Campbell as he goes by him on his way to the third base, dugout.
- 2:41:15Joe Rudy, the first inning, lined a double wall play.
- 2:41:19Base to the wall in left field, a drive in a red light,
- 2:41:22a score himself, walk in the third, singled in the fifth.
- 2:41:25When they won Vossoc, it was two-hundred and six,
- 2:41:27but he sits alone the base to be promptly singled to center field to drive in two warts.
- 2:41:31And then with a base to the seventh and a three-two pitch he flies to right.
- 2:41:35Three for four for Rudy.
- 2:41:37Three on the eyes, give him thirteen for the year.
- 2:41:42Joe has two home runs.
- 2:41:44Campbell will throw off a long one now, and then the pitch.
- 2:41:47In there came Rudy, but it was inside.
- 2:41:52Minnesota Toronto has been postponed.
- 2:41:54Rain in Ontario.
- 2:41:56Milwaukee leading point seven four in the bottom of the eighth inning at Tiger Stadium, Detroit.
- 2:42:01McOkey of the Inks shut out Oakland two-nothing.
- 2:42:04Baltimore are best at Seattle five-four.
- 2:42:08The set by Campbell, and a one-strike pitch.
- 2:42:10Playing on the top of the short,
- 2:42:12Brilson charges at the ugly hop, has to go in a hurry and gets his man by a step.
- 2:42:17Straight on with Brilson in shortstop, and there's two-bond in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:42:22Ronan Jensen is one for three.
- 2:42:25Singleton short and a first.
- 2:42:27Rhyme into a double play.
- 2:42:28A vicious line drive back to the mound of Bill Leary.
- 2:42:31In the third inning, it felt to have been stabbed and turned into two.
- 2:42:34Saban of Hill, Detroit, from the last two times up, he's been hit by a pitch.
- 2:42:39At Kansas City, the Royals have just scored four times in the seventh inning to tie the game at five against Texas.
- 2:42:46But Al Oliver did a solo home run in the eighth, so it's now six-five Texas top of the eighth at KC.
- 2:42:51One-nothing.
- 2:42:52Chicago over Cleveland after seven.
- 2:42:54The Cots are getting great pitching, but they've made a change in the top of the eighth.
- 2:42:58A pitch to Jackson.
- 2:43:00Change is low, ball one.
- 2:43:02Nantz-O-Lake, Atlanta beats St. Louis 2-1.
- 2:43:04Caps over Cincinnati 3-2.
- 2:43:06Pittsburgh against a 3-0 lead at Houston in the sixth.
- 2:43:09Philadelphia trails the Dodgers 6-4.
- 2:43:14After eight innings in Los Angeles, Jackson takes ball two.
- 2:43:18Ducky Baker in the grand slam-over on a back game.
- 2:43:21Houston hits two home runs, 14th of the year.
- 2:43:24Monday's hit is 12th minute night, so long balling in Dodger Stadium in L.A. up front.
- 2:43:306-4, still up top of the night.
- 2:43:33No score meant to send the eagle bottom to second, and the Giants deep-marched it all one-nothing.
- 2:43:37The 2-0 pitch coming up to Jackson.
- 2:43:40Hyde inside, up under the 10th, 3-0.
- 2:43:43Jackson was swinging, so he was really stepping into that one, looking for something he could yank out of here.
- 2:43:48He went with his chin.
- 2:43:51Three balls, no strikes.
- 2:43:55Merb Rettman with the next.
- 2:43:58Wynn continues to blow toward left-hand quite as strong as early in the game.
- 2:44:01Playing a high-five ball, the left-field, Rue Keane, he has coming in for it, and he makes the pass.
- 2:44:07Jackson 3-9 at 3-0, but didn't have a very good swing.
- 2:44:12The Eagles got it all in. We go to the bottom of the ninth inning. Wynn, Reitz, Yudhsitse, Duke, and Boston in a 9-9 tie.
- 2:44:19Bottom of the ninth inning, and the Eagles come in with their top left-handed reliever, Dave LaRoche.
- 2:44:25LaRoche, the base, Wynn, Reitz, and Yudhsitse.
- 2:44:29LaRoche, missed yesterday, and missed that two-day.
- 2:44:33Now, as Wynn has the win, with three-1 headings in relief.
- 2:44:39He's 5-2 on the year with a club high of 7 saves.
- 2:44:44He had a 2.88.
- 2:44:46Wynn, with a three-run homer and four at bats, takes a 9-1.
- 2:44:51LaRoche and Humphrey, the Eagles battering.
- 2:44:53Jackson, short, rich, and barely on the infield.
- 2:44:56The men of the barters, barely a first, and Jackson is third, right on the line.
- 2:45:00The outfield of Rudy Boczka, the land road, up the right.
- 2:45:04Out of line, and Boston, and a down ball right side, barely can get it, and it's in the right field.
- 2:45:09Wynn turns and holds at first base.
- 2:45:13Now, we told you that, barely was right on the line.
- 2:45:16That was the routine out earlier in the game, but it trickled through for a base hit here in the ninth.
- 2:45:21Jackson went the other way for Boston in the eighth inning, went two smashes to third,
- 2:45:27and came out because Jackson was position there.
- 2:45:30So, LaRoche created for a base hit off the bat of Liam.
- 2:45:33Kim Wright comes up, he's over three with a loss.
- 2:45:37Now, Boston has its best hitter, and they believe top home run at RBI producer at the plate, in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:45:4831,652 to play, and it's a sell-out when you consider their couple of thousand guests here.
- 2:45:54Now, they've lost in that, and they've seen a great game, and all they can add for now is a win in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:46:00It's a 9-9 tie.
- 2:46:03Lamaga face runner to pitch, Wright got a butt, takes a strike.
- 2:46:07So, John Zimmer, chanting his big home run hitter to run around sacrifice,
- 2:46:14but it might just as quickly take that butt off and let it swing away,
- 2:46:17figuring that the Angels would give him a high fanfall against that and drive it out of here.
- 2:46:22Jackson creeping in from third, barely holding on, let it burst.
- 2:46:25The pitch he's swinging and fouls it away.
- 2:46:28He got the high fanfall, but was a little late pulling the trigger.
- 2:46:37Lynn at first base, the winning run, no one out, bottom of the ninth.
- 2:46:41Nine runs, 11 hits for each side.
- 2:46:45Infield looking for the double play.
- 2:46:48Lynn has a bigger lead this time.
- 2:46:51A roach to the plate, high, a back ball, 1-2.
- 2:46:58That's over two perfect innings, getting the fat out of order in the seventh and the eighth.
- 2:47:05And now the roach, working the ninth inning.
- 2:47:07Lynn has created him with a ground ball single.
- 2:47:09The 1-2 pitch, Lynn takes the just inside.
- 2:47:12That's his swing, and the ball breaking sharply down and in, just off the corner.
- 2:47:162-2.
- 2:47:19The first net, 6-4, again, brand-handed Jim Wright, 2-0, Boston.
- 2:47:23In the second and final game of this brief set, 2-2 pitch, high ball, 3.
- 2:47:31So the count is on from two strikes to 3-2.
- 2:47:35We'll see if the Red Sox play a little run and a hit.
- 2:47:40The roach kicking it to the rubber.
- 2:47:42Now let's then get this time from Terry Humphrey.
- 2:47:45Lynn leads away from first base.
- 2:47:48The roach at the plate.
- 2:47:49Here's the pitch.
- 2:47:50High ball, 4.
- 2:47:56Now the Red Sox, good net, the ball in the net.
- 2:47:59Lynn gets the ground single, and Wright behind 0-2, watches for a straight ball.
- 2:48:04And now the Red Sox have runners at first and second going out.
- 2:48:08And Carl Yusremski fouls in the fifth, and George Scott can't go to hit him at order.
- 2:48:15Gazz, who handles the match extremely well, gets with his third base, Gogetti, out to see if he's up there to box.
- 2:48:23Gazz is rounded out three times and walks.
- 2:48:30Now Boston, literally undefeatable at all, 22-4, with a great chance to win it here on the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:48:38The roach gets the winner, Gazz wears it, takes it away, and top-side ball up.
- 2:48:42Now the roach has that plate jumping on him.
- 2:48:48Lynn, the winning run at second.
- 2:48:52Wright just frosting over Gazz.
- 2:48:57Yes, square to butt, he gave himself up immediately.
- 2:49:01Swing, miss the iron, and take the strike, one-and-one.
- 2:49:04Oh my, with Gazz increasing in from third and barely tied at first.
- 2:49:08Yes, got a good breaking ball, but didn't go after it, one-and-one to count.
- 2:49:15Habsfield straight away for Gazz, wind blowing out toward left.
- 2:49:19Runners lead first and second going out, he's cleared the butt, butted toward third.
- 2:49:23The roach gets a play at third, and he doesn't make it, and it went a three.
- 2:49:27Oh my, Gazz and Legosi, the roach all around, and third base up by our Joe Franklin, he called him safe.
- 2:49:43Legosi throws his hands in the air of disgust, but it was an excellent front by the veteran gethfifty.
- 2:49:50The roach got only one play.
- 2:49:52The ball field is going toward the third-base foul line, and so he was in position to throw the bird,
- 2:49:59but they didn't get him, the umpire ruled safe, and you've got to give your sense he a bunch single.
- 2:50:03That's how good he is.
- 2:50:05Now trying to take some miracle-pinting by the roach, not to lose in the ninth inning.
- 2:50:10Has Walshens, has the bases loaded, no one out.
- 2:50:14The infield is in, the outfield is in, time is called, and Johnny Tuskey goes out to say something to Jim Wright.
- 2:50:21Now to the fifth, the right-handed hitting catcher is fouled out, struck out, a deep out to center, and a ground out.
- 2:50:34The infield, who have had the bases loaded four times at the end of an inning,
- 2:50:39everybody will get that big blow, trying themselves now with Walshens, enjoying a bases loaded situation,
- 2:50:47and no one out in the bottom of the ninth. La Roche is not going to use the wind-up.
- 2:50:51Fifth, right-handed batter, the pitch, way outside, ball in.
