- 0:45And welcome back to the Boundary Corner Podcast along with my
- 0:49partners Brian Siegel and Jonathan Talley, and our special
- 0:53guest, The Hardest Working Man in Hokey podcast land, Mike
- 0:56McDaniel from The Hokey Hangover.
- 0:58I am Curtis Wilson. This episode is brought to you
- 1:01by Doctor Jeremy Counts at the Main Street Pharmacy in
- 1:05Blacksburg, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy located at
- 1:07301 S Main St. in Blacksburg. Mike.
- 1:12Hey, buddy. What's up?
- 1:14What's going on? I thought.
- 1:17I thought if I came on this podcast this week, we might have
- 1:20a chance to actually win a game. You know, I I've been recapping
- 1:24all these games on my podcast. And nothing good has happened
- 1:29yet. So I was thinking, if I went on
- 1:31another Virginia Tech podcast, maybe something good would
- 1:33happen this week. Let's mix it up, let's let's do
- 1:36things a little different, see if we can get a different
- 1:39outcome because if we're being honest, I mean it is not look
- 1:42good the last three weeks. No, not at all.
- 1:47It's not look good. It's not look good at all.
- 1:49Good evening, Lavar. Always good to hear from you,
- 1:52man. Down in the 75.
- 1:54It hasn't boys. It has been a rough last three
- 1:58weeks. Hokie sit at 1:00 and 3:00 after
- 2:01the 24 to 17 lost to Marshall the first time they have beat
- 2:06the Hokies in 83 years. That's right, 83 years.
- 2:11Right down. Big Yikes.
- 2:14And before we get into all that, got a couple things.
- 2:17Obviously we always are pumping it rally for Robbie this year to
- 2:22support testicular answer. Not sure what lot it's going to
- 2:26be in yet trying to get with Grayson on that.
- 2:28Look at that. Once we know we will tweet it
- 2:30out, go visit get yourself one and it will be always at the
- 2:36pharmacy 7 dollars, then they'll only they do accept them only
- 2:41cash there. Before I get into the game,
- 2:43there's two things we got to talk about.
- 2:44First of all let's talk about Pop Watson.
- 2:47He was suspended indefinitely. He has since been reinstated and
- 2:51has also been. This is what happens when we
- 2:55record before the the Tuesday presser man.
- 2:58Like we we don't get to actually talk about the news when it
- 3:01happened, and now it's like it's already over.
- 3:04Yeah, surprise, we glad. We glad that's over.
- 3:10Definitely glad it's over. But I mean like, you know, we
- 3:14had, we had talked about it elsewhere off camera here like.
- 3:18Indefinitely definitely got taken with and ran.
- 3:21But I mean that's if it's only one week, that's when you know
- 3:24just say it's one week or say it's pop.
- 3:29Needs to take some steps before he's back with the team.
- 3:32Don't say indefinitely and definitely makes people think
- 3:34he's out till November. And then don't don't forget,
- 3:38somebody comes up and says, well, the last person that was.
- 3:41Suspended and definitely killed a man.
- 3:43I'm like, Jesus Christ, we can't.
- 3:46We can't win, man. We can't win on Twitter.
- 3:49We can't win on the field. We fucked up all around.
- 3:53Thank you, Virginia Tech. Twitter.
- 3:54You keep my started. And and it's and it's started
- 3:59with Fry winning every press conference and winning over
- 4:03everybody and now it's like every little thing gets
- 4:05deadpicked when you only win four out of your first 15 games.
- 4:08So. That's what happens.
- 4:09Oh yeah, Oh yeah, everything will be nitpicked.
- 4:11Can't even tweet the one and no graphic anymore because that's
- 4:14going to get trolled all the hell.
- 4:15Oh yeah, they killing it. I've seen one of the coaches say
- 4:20something about God or or or or. Thank you, Jesus.
- 4:25I saw that. And somebody.
- 4:28You gonna have to Was it winner, Marv it?
- 4:29Was one of the two. I'll go man.
- 4:31I'm smart. Marv is smart for sure.
- 4:33It's Mark. I had them messed up.
- 4:35Y'all it was Mark. Messed up.
- 4:37Hey man, some of y'all out there.
- 4:38Ruthless man they are. Ruthless they are.
- 4:40Ruthless for them. It's a passionate fan base, man,
- 4:42but that's why we show up in 65,000 in the seats for a one in
- 4:47three team coming off a three win season.
- 4:49It came sold out. Super interesting to see it sold
- 4:52out beforehand. It'll be interesting to see
- 4:54second anyway. You see network.
- 4:56How many people are actually there?
- 4:59I'm not going, Mike, you going this week?
- 5:07He lagging a little bit. I think we lagging Tally, you
- 5:10ain't going obviously. See you.
- 5:11Ain't going, are you? I'm not going.
- 5:12All right, We'll let him. We'll let Mike get sorted out
- 5:16here. He is lagging there, but let's
- 5:19talk about the other thing. It broke today.
- 5:21I think this had been in the works for quite a while where
- 5:26the Hokies are moving their home game headquarters from the Hotel
- 5:29Roanoke to Blacksburg at the Inn in Blacksburg.
- 5:33This was a David Teal article. It is going to cost the
- 5:37department about 100 + K more a year.
- 5:40But I mean, if you've got something that can accommodate,
- 5:48there we go. He came back.
- 5:50He left again, left again. Well, that might figure it out
- 5:54here. But if you have the amenities in
- 5:59Blacksburg to keep the team 5 minutes from the field, please
- 6:04do that. It's it's almost an hour ride
- 6:07with a bus up 81 to. We've had enough travel issues
- 6:14so far this year that we don't need to continue adding to that,
- 6:19to that run, right. So we don't, you know, you got a
- 6:23late, late plane. I mean, let's let's keep it
- 6:30simple. When there's something else that
- 6:33happened in the travel that threw things off, I can't
- 6:37remember what it was. Some of the Rutgers, the plane,
- 6:39they went there, they went back and all that stuff.
- 6:42To my knowledge, nothing else travel wise happened.
- 6:47They did mention at one point this year like there had been
- 6:50some issues coming up 81 that had delayed them, which makes
- 6:53sense because they're roughly leaving there what, 4 hours
- 6:57before the game? How much of the traffic from the
- 7:0075, the 804 and Nova's coming in at that point in time, getting
- 7:05into it 3 hours beforehand? Of course there's going to be
- 7:08traffic delays, right? And right now we've lost Mike,
- 7:12so we're going to try to get him back in here he.
- 7:17Said his computer crashed. He's getting back up.
- 7:19We're good. We will get him.
- 7:21But do y'all like that. I mean, y'all y'all both played,
- 7:24you know, collegiate ball and stuff.
- 7:26You know, how far did y'all stay from your home stadium tally?
- 7:29Well, I mean, it was. I can see good and bad, I guess
- 7:35in in in why you do that? Because sometimes you want to
- 7:37be, you know, away just to have your team just not really run
- 7:44into people, just focus on the game, you know what I'm saying?
- 7:49But of course, we're dinosaurs now.
- 7:51So you got social media, they got their phones, they're going
- 7:55then. They're not just going to be
- 7:56with the team anyway and mostly everybody knows where they stay,
- 8:00so you're going to run in the fans there as well, so.
- 8:03I mean, I feel like why wasted like you said, why it caused
- 8:08more problems going and taking off when you can just be right
- 8:13around the corner or not. Yeah, I would.
- 8:17When I played, he used to stay in the Wyanoke Hotel for game
- 8:22nights, sometimes for the home games.
- 8:25Big home games. We actually didn't.
- 8:27We didn't do it for every home game.
- 8:28Curtis knows that because Curtis knows I would occasionally DB
- 8:32for that motherfucker on on Friday nights if I didn't have
- 8:35to go to the hotel. Yes, he did, because he couldn't
- 8:37sleep too. Amped up, yeah, I mean, night
- 8:44before a game, if I got to sleep before two or three, if I was
- 8:48doing something good, even even on road trips in a hotel like it
- 8:52could, just I just got amped up and.
- 8:55That was kind of my routine. So I was like, if I'm awake, I
- 8:57might as well do something productive with my night.
- 9:00What do you think about it, Mike?
- 9:02I mean, did you read the TL article or see it or hear about
- 9:04it, the moving from the hotel, rolling out back to the Inn at
- 9:07Blacksburg and what are your thoughts on it?
- 9:11Yeah, I read it. No, I'm here.
- 9:13I'm here. I'm here.
- 9:13Don't worry, I'm here. No, I read it.
- 9:18I read it. I my thoughts.
- 9:22My thoughts on it are, look, it makes a lot of sense, right?
- 9:28I think this is one of those things where, you know when your
- 9:30program is struggling, you're looking for a layup literally
- 9:33anywhere, right? And I think this is one of those
- 9:35things where, you know, David Teal writes his story and you
- 9:39know the staff is looking for anything good in a moment where
- 9:41the team's really struggling, things are going really poorly.
- 9:44And I think when you pen this story.
- 9:48And you, you put it out there. Any positive press right now for
- 9:51this football program is good press.
- 9:53And being like okay, there's a reason why we're doing this.
- 9:55It's, you know, something that will bring the recruits, you
- 10:02know, around the team, have them be, you know, part of the
- 10:09weekend, have it be a little bit easier to the Virginia Tech.
- 10:13In that way they're right there on campus all weekend.
- 10:16I think it makes a lot of sense and I don't know why they
- 10:18weren't doing that before, to be honest with you.
- 10:22It seems like this was something that started back in the Beamer
- 10:24area. Again, Gladys, there also you,
- 10:26if you read the article, Mike, you saw too.
- 10:28It was one of those things with recruits on campus Friday
- 10:31nights. Now the coaches, like literally
- 10:33can just go meet with them. They can set up visits and all
- 10:35that. The other big part, and this is
- 10:38wild, you spent how much money on the Beamer Barn.
- 10:41You weren't using it for walkthroughs on game days.
- 10:44Now they're going to use it as their walkthrough on game days
- 10:46versus one of the conference rooms in a Hotel Roanoke.
- 10:48So it makes perfect sense and all that.
- 10:50All right, all right, well, let's just get to it.
- 10:52Y'all because we can't hide it. We got a lot of people.
- 10:57Yeah, right. Tell us, Dwight.
- 11:00We got to tell the truth Tuesday.
- 11:02And we've got a lot of stuff, too.
- 11:08We got a lot of. Stuff going forward.
- 11:09Mikey, welcome on board. Mike.
- 11:11They all love you here but we got to tell the truth Tuesday.
- 11:16Mike, what we do here is we talk about what went well what went
- 11:20bad, did anything happen we were not prepared for and what can we
- 11:26do better moving forward. This is a philosophy taken told
- 11:29to us by our buddy Robbie company.
- 11:31He's a coach down in North Carolina and he they developed
- 11:33this from Pete Carroll. So.
- 11:35So you know where it's coming from, but let's talk about the
- 11:38first one. And this isn't a long list
- 11:41today, it's the shortest of the year so far.
- 11:44But what went well? What went well?
- 11:48Anybody want to talk about anything?
- 11:51For two quarters we run the ball pretty damn well.
- 11:55We did best run we had all year. Yeah, I mean, we had.
- 12:01Runs. We had runs.
- 12:05Yeah. How many yards did?
- 12:06Two. And average was it?
- 12:08Was it like 6-2 was at 9.82 almost averaged A10 spot?
- 12:15They should have gave him the ball like he was Jamal Anderson
- 12:19back with the Falcons. They should have gave him the
- 12:21ball 35 times. And I would have told drones you
- 12:25are running back until you throw for over 300 yards.
- 12:29When you drop back, just fucking run.
- 12:33They ain't stopping us from running, so why are we stopping
- 12:35running? Going with the other Evans one
- 12:39reading go let. Me slow back down.
- 12:41We talked about what went well. I think somebody put the quick
- 12:44start. A quick start was good.
- 12:46You know, again, let me let me put this in slam out there right
- 12:49quick. I did not watch the game
- 12:51Saturday. My son had a baseball tournament
- 12:54that I was at, so we were in Coleman, Alabama, which has no
- 12:59service. At all.
- 13:02It don't sound like it had service.
- 13:03No, it had no service at all. So I mean, like I was getting
- 13:07updates on the way home. Marshall just scored again.
- 13:12And when I say on the way home at 8:00 at night, I'm getting
- 13:15updates then. But I did not watch the, you
- 13:18know, reading Twitter and talking to the guys, I knew what
- 13:23happened, but I didn't watch the game until.
- 13:26Earlier today, I didn't plan to watch it, but I knew we had to
- 13:28do a show. I was like, yeah, I probably
- 13:30better watch it. So I watched it earlier today.
- 13:32So that's just a disclaim I wanted to put out for everybody.
- 13:36But the quick start was, I guess, you know, hit or or
- 13:40getting the text from Curtis and saying, hey, look at that, we
- 13:43scored y'all realized that we hadn't scored a touchdown all
- 13:49year in the first quarter. The only points that we had got.
- 13:54In the first quarter, I think was the safety against Old
- 13:58Dominion. It's not good, man.
- 14:00It's not freaking good. But we all, we all.
- 14:04They gave us that. It wasn't like we really earned
- 14:06it. They just snapped the ball into
- 14:07the next damn city. They gave us back 1 from 20. 20
- 14:10Yeah they you know we stepped we stepped the ball into you know
- 14:14Williamsburg from from Norfolk and we and they snapped 1 to
- 14:18rolling. Blacksburg to Roanoke.
- 14:19So that's right, Mike. What else?
- 14:22We hit a couple spots here. There ain't many bright spots.
- 14:24What else went well in your opinion?
- 14:26So this is for for 25 carries. For Rasheena Lee.
- 14:32The rushing defense actually played really well for 25
- 14:34carries. Just want to emphasize.
- 14:38Disclaimer. Disclaimer.
- 14:41He had more. He had a couple more than 25.
- 14:44He had 27. He had 27 for 174 and two
- 14:48touchdowns. He also had 25 carries.
- 14:52He had 25 carries for 57 yards. He had two carries for 117
- 14:55yards, 2 touchdowns. So for 25 carries, the Russian
- 14:59defense was very, very good. Which, I mean, it seems
- 15:03ridiculous to even bring this up given, you know, those were two
- 15:06of the biggest plays of the game right for Marshall's offense.
- 15:08But that was, in my opinion, it was a step in the right
- 15:13direction for much of the game against the run now.
- 15:19Of course, you look at the two touchdown runs and what was the
- 15:20issue? It was it was the run fits
- 15:22again, right? And it's just, it keeps the
- 15:24rearing its ugly head. But I was actually encouraged by
- 15:27the rushing defense for a good portion of the game, even
- 15:30though, you know, it was the two carries end up, you know,
- 15:32constant tech and it really just led to the outcome.
- 15:35Yeah. And and Mike, we were talking
- 15:38about it just before that. You take those two runs out,
- 15:40they averaged 2.1 a carry. Yeah, on the other 42 carries
- 15:44they had, they pounded the shit out of the ball 2.1.
- 15:49Wouldn't you, though, Like, oh, I would too.
- 15:53I mean, even if we're showing, even if we're showing a
- 15:55propensity to stop the run consistently, we're also showing
- 15:58that we will give up explosive plays in the run game.
- 16:01So if you keep running the ball, you're eventually going to hit
- 16:03something. You're going to hit one.
- 16:05Now there's one other actually bright spot.
- 16:08We forced 2 turnovers. We forced 2 turnovers.
- 16:11We had two picks Saturday. We didn't do anything with them,
- 16:15but it's still the whole. One of those was part of the
- 16:19fast start. So one of those worst part of
- 16:21the fast start. But again, we have two picks and
- 16:24we are, I mean, what are we up to five now?
- 16:26Turnovers. I think we were at 7 total last
- 16:28year, yeah. Something like that, Not many.
- 16:31Where's John? We're on a better, we're on a
- 16:33better pace right now. But yeah, you know we're going
- 16:38to talk about a little bit. That's the part of the problem I
- 16:40have is that we're we're seeing. Steps up in some areas and steps
- 16:45down in others. And we we can't ever get those
- 16:48steps up to sync with the with with not taking a step back.
- 16:51So it's true, all right. Y'all Got anything else on what
- 16:54went well? That's it.
- 16:57That's it. Because that's it.
- 16:59We got a lot here. We got a lot here for what went
- 17:01bad. And I'm going to start this one
- 17:02out because this one is the one that I think could have really
- 17:06changed it. The what went bad.
- 17:08I think coach prize hyperaggressive go forward on
- 17:114th down up 7. We're already got the lead.
- 17:15It's I think it's 4th and 3 1/2 from the 36.
- 17:19Brian you did the math. 47 yard field goal.
- 17:22Kick it, kick it, You go up. I think it was the 3032, it was
- 17:2932, but you when I texted you, you said 47 yard field goal.
- 17:32We've seen John Love. He's got the leg to get there.
- 17:36Take it. You get them down 10.
- 17:38Nothing to Bonds point just a few minutes ago.
- 17:42Now they might not be able to just continue to pound the ball
- 17:44because okay, we're down. We're down to scores.
- 17:46Now if if they stop us and we get 2.12.12.1 we got a punt and
- 17:53we could be losing grass to this game.
- 17:57Go ahead. It's just football. one-on-one,
- 18:00too. It's like most people know, when
- 18:02you get a turnover, what's the first thing you want to do?
- 18:06You want to, you want to try to go down the field, you want to
- 18:09try to take a shot right after a turnover.
- 18:11You get the ball in plus territory and you're only able
- 18:16to move it. You know what?
- 18:1720 yards, I think 19 yards, something like that.
- 18:21If that much. Like why go for it on that 4th
- 18:23down when we can at least give ourselves a chance, You know
- 18:27what I'm saying? Like we just we weren't moving
- 18:29the ball very well, so there's no reason to.
- 18:32Try to go for it there in my No, no, no, no, no, Kelly, this was
- 18:35right after the scoring drive. This was right after scoring Dr.
- 18:38We had just went six. Plays and 74 yards.
- 18:40But I'm saying, I'm saying on that drive, once we got the
- 18:43turnover, we weren't moving the ball well enough to like have
- 18:47the confidence of my opinion that just well we're going to
- 18:50throw it. You know, because I think on
- 18:52that, on that 4th to Aaron play, we threw it right, Like he
- 18:54threw. A deep Yeah, he's coming right
- 18:57here. Yeah, it's like, why go for that
- 18:59if you. I mean, it's just the wrong call
- 19:01all around to me. I would have rather kicked it
- 19:04there and go up to you because off of a turnover, if you got
- 19:07the opportunity to get points, let's get points.
- 19:10But if you're going to go for it in that situation, I feel like
- 19:15go for it. Go for what's been working.
- 19:17You know, if we've been gashing them with the run and the
- 19:20quarterbacks legs have been killing them, why not do that?
- 19:24Gentlemen, we know there's nothing there.
- 19:25There's not a shortage of short pass calls in the Tyler Bowen
- 19:29playbook. We don't need to be throwing it
- 19:3130 yards down the field. And he had three men on.
- 19:35I'm like, yeah, why throw it to him?
- 19:38And some people say, well, when Drone, if Drone starts, you got
- 19:40to give him the same energy. Drones definitely gets the same
- 19:43energy. Anybody who sets back there at
- 19:45quarterback is going to get the same energy.
- 19:47You can't make that throw. I don't care what kind of
- 19:50pressure you got, if you got the legs that he has, you got to.
- 19:53You got to take off the run. You have to.
- 19:55I get it. But go ahead, Mike.
- 19:57No, I was just gonna. I hated.
- 19:59I hated the play call. I didn't hate the decision to go
- 20:02for it. I was actually okay with that.
- 20:04I mean the 47 yard like if this is inside 40 yards, right With
- 20:08Love I feel better about it. I get love has the leg but from
- 20:10an accuracy standpoint, 47 yard field goal, you miss it.
- 20:13You're giving a bunch of field field position anyway, right?
- 20:16I'm of the opinion that. You know, it's Brian's point on
- 20:19the short passing game. I mean, Bowen calls short passes
- 20:24all game long and then we decided to air it out deep down
- 20:27the sideline on 4th and three. I hated the play call.
- 20:30I mean, it was the wrong read by Drones 2, I think, right?
- 20:33I mean throwing it downfield, it really well covered.
- 20:35I mean that had no shot of getting completed.
- 20:38So I I just hated the play call. But the decision to go for it, I
- 20:41was actually okay with. I appreciate the aggressiveness
- 20:44because you know right out the gate you go down and score,
- 20:47right? And then you get in your
- 20:49reception. And now for the first time all
- 20:50season really it feels like you have some positive momentum like
- 20:53with a lead, right, Because we've seen some positive
- 20:55momentum like coming back, right.
- 20:58Purdue, you're down 17, Old Dominion, you're kind of
- 21:01screwing around. They have a good, you know, a
- 21:02good third quarter start to pull away.
- 21:04But we, we haven't really seen tech play from the lead much
- 21:07this year. And so I was okay with the
- 21:10aggressive decision to go for it.
- 21:11I just really hated the play call.
- 21:14Mike said he was okay let pride let his nuts hang a little bit
- 21:16on in that scenario. Just.
- 21:18Be a. Little bit of strategic with
- 21:20what you do with. He wasn't okay with Bowen trying
- 21:25to let his nuts hang out going for a touchdown and a triple
- 21:28coverage. All right, the other one I got,
- 21:30and these are mine personally because I wrote these out three
- 21:33and outs. You know how many we had against
- 21:35Rutgers? Mike maybe 3 and outs we had
- 21:37against Rutgers, we had zero. 0. We had four versus Marshall and
- 21:43they came at the most inopportune times and the worst
- 21:46times all game and it's that's where it frustrates you because
- 21:50and I and I, I shouldn't say 3 and outs because you know 3 and
- 21:56outs 4 and outs because money downs.
- 21:58We were three for 16. We were dreadful after having a
- 22:01good game against Rutgers and it's like, Brian, would you just
- 22:05say? We took the steps up in the run
- 22:08game. We look more competent moving
- 22:09the ball. What do we do on the money
- 22:11downs? What do we do on the three and
- 22:12outs? Thanks.
- 22:16OK, right back down. It's the old one step up, two
- 22:20steps back in every scenario and and and and that and that really
- 22:25screwed because the way we were moving the ball if we could have
- 22:28converted three more third downs.
- 22:33I say 3 or 4, three to four more third downs, not a great number,
- 22:36still still under 50%, but the way we moved the ball numerous
- 22:40times against them that that probably took one score off the
- 22:44board. And if you're not so awful on
- 22:473rd down in that second quarter, you probably don't get quite
- 22:51that many points scored on you in that quarter.
- 22:54And that was the quarter that really flipped the game and put
- 22:58us behind the 8 ball pretty much the rest of the way out.
- 23:01Yep, because it was fumble 3 and out, three and out.
- 23:05And they went field goal or they scored a touchdown, then they
- 23:10scored a field goal and we didn't do anything to answer
- 23:13either one of those going to have.
- 23:15So yeah, but what else? What else do y'all have up here?
- 23:18We have a bunch of stuff written out here.
- 23:20Who wants to tackle the next one?
- 23:22I'll go go for one thing. Offensive line pass pro was
- 23:27atrocious. And we thought it was doing
- 23:30good, like the run the run stuff was bad at first.
- 23:33Now the the pass Pro is horrible.
- 23:36I think we we finally hit a team that can rush the passer pretty
- 23:40well too and the guy that we were concerned in this in this
- 23:45situation got absolutely worked a bunch of key times gave up a
- 23:49sack bunch of like about five or six.
- 23:53I think hurries surrendered. I mean, it was, it was a bad
- 23:56night for for our right tackle. And Mike, I'll let you go.
- 24:01I know you're about to say something that I was, I was just
- 24:03gonna say it's almost like Tyler Bowen should just roll the
- 24:07quarterback out like he was doing against Rutgers.
- 24:09Why are we now having Kyron drones be a dropback passer?
- 24:13I don't want to dive in this too deep, cuz I'm gonna go on a
- 24:15little bit of a rant later on this podcast about this.
- 24:18But why? Why are we all of a sudden we're
- 24:20we're rolling him out against Rutgers, getting him real
- 24:23comfortable, right? Having him kind of feel the game
- 24:25out a little bit as a passer. And then against Marshall we're
- 24:28we're just turning them into like Peyton Manning like drop
- 24:30back like three or five step drops.
- 24:32What are we doing with the passing game?
- 24:35I. Don't understand it.
- 24:35You want to know why we're doing that?
- 24:38Inexperienced. We have a inexperienced
- 24:41offensive coordinator that is picking fucking Madden plays and
- 24:46hoping that you're going to score on them.
- 24:48Inexperienced. Prior.
- 24:50You need to go get some experience in the coaching staff
- 24:53at those coordinator positions. That's what the problem is.
- 24:57I was disappointed that that is. So two things happened that kind
- 25:01of switched up the way this kind of play calling went, right?
- 25:06So Bowen comes out the game, he's calling run plays.
- 25:10He got Kyron drones going on a quarterback power that he broke
- 25:14a tackling and went up for a touchdown.
- 25:17Good opening scheme, right? So the the, the play call sheet,
- 25:20he's like, I've scripted this, it's good to go.
- 25:23And then? The second drive you have two
- 25:26and put it on the ground. We get we get it get back on it
- 25:28though we end up getting a field goal range end up going forward
- 25:30on forth, down. Then the drones fumble happens
- 25:34and it's like every every time something bad happened on
- 25:37offense that butthole was getting a little bit tighter and
- 25:40after that drones fumble it's like all right Kyron you gonna
- 25:44be you gonna be thrown from the pocket for for the next two
- 25:46quarters and you're gonna like it.
- 25:48We're gonna have maybe 2 design runs in the next two quarters
- 25:51for you and you're gonna like it.
- 25:53That would be great if you have people that was blocking.
- 25:55He was under duress every time, the whole game, and the only way
- 26:01that you could beat that pass rush was to roll the
- 26:04quarterback. And if you've been coaching as
- 26:07long as some of these coaches have been coaching, I don't
- 26:10understand why you don't see this, which I'll get into what
- 26:14when we talk about some of our stuff later on.
- 26:17Yeah, can we shout out Owen Porter for absolutely working?
- 26:22Our tackles, but particularly our right tackle.
- 26:25Listen, I'm on. Let me let me say something
- 26:27right quick, #70, #70. I don't want to call your name
- 26:31because I've done it too much and I think you're a great kid
- 26:34and you're probably going to make a great husband and you're
- 26:36a great son. You are not a very good tackle
- 26:39at this point. I'm going to tell you like I
- 26:42tell my own son that thirteen years old, that plays football.
- 26:45He's not a football player, he's a baseball player, told him last
- 26:48night. They got beat 40 to 6.
- 26:50By a team that they shouldn't have got beat 40 to 6.
- 26:52I say it Enjoy this next game that you play because it's
- 26:55probably going to be your last football game.
- 26:57You ain't playing no more. That's it.
- 27:00We ain't time on football. We're going to go do something
- 27:04this productive. I'm gonna say to me, if you're a
- 27:07good Fisher, go buy you some reels and rods, man.
- 27:11Go catch something as bass. With that facial hair, if he's
- 27:14not a good Fisher, somebody did something.
- 27:17It's almost hunting season, man. We a few weeks away, Mike,
- 27:21anything to add on any of the offensive stuff?
- 27:25Because what I said it was. I called it Tyler Bowen being a
- 27:28Jekyll and Hyde because there were times it was times it
- 27:31looked like genius, and it was times it looked like what?
- 27:36Yeah, his lack of his, his lack. I think his, I think his lack of
- 27:44creativity. So the opening script was pretty
- 27:48good. Obviously go down and score
- 27:50great. But when it comes to like big
- 27:53moments in the game, you know he won't roll the quarterback out.
- 27:57He won't make life a little bit easier on the offensive line.
- 28:00He won't just be stubborn in some ways and just stick with
- 28:04the run because you know the running game actually looked
- 28:08pretty good early on and then we just went away from it.
- 28:12I just think that he goes through these spurts in the
- 28:15middle of the game where he gets so inconsistent.
- 28:18He's just very he's very tentative like the tight
- 28:24butthole comment is like that is that is that is the truth.
- 28:29I mean the the big time moments. I mean, he's just kind of, I
- 28:34want to say shrivels up, but it kind of feels that way, right?
- 28:37And you just, you have a feeling in the big moments.
- 28:40You know it's felt that way. Obviously for the first two
- 28:42years you just have a feeling in the big moments.
- 28:44The offense is just not going to come through and that's a
- 28:46terrible feeling. Right.
- 28:48I'll say this. Let me let me talk about this
- 28:50real quick though, because I've seen this on both sides of the
- 28:52ball, both coordinators and I think this goes back to the
- 28:57inexperience that Tally was talking about it, what Mike you
- 28:59were talking about, it seems like in the moment.
- 29:04We get really conservative because we don't, we don't want
- 29:07to roll the dice and take take a chance that our players can make
- 29:10plays. So we end up playing it very
- 29:13conservatively and then that bites us in the ass.
- 29:17So thinking about it on defense, every time we get there's the
- 29:20offense is as a check with big. When we've got a blitz going,
- 29:24we've checked out of the blitz almost every time.
- 29:27We don't say I'm going to trust my guys to get home.
- 29:32And make this play work. Yeah.
- 29:35Just like on the offensive side, as soon as there's a first sign
- 29:38of trouble, we we get really conservative, all right, We're
- 29:41going to essentially become an Air raid offense for two
- 29:44quarters because we're we're afraid to to run the football
- 29:48and and potentially put the ball in the ground again.
- 29:50And we're afraid that if we throw the ball deep, we might
- 29:53turn the ball over, like at some point you got to let your
- 29:55players go out there and make plays.
- 29:57Yep, you got to become fearless in in some point, regardless of
- 30:02what you are as an offensive coordinator.
- 30:03Mike, I'm going to do a little bit different before I pitch it
- 30:05to you here. I do think some of Tyler's play
- 30:08calls are creative. I think what you're saying is is
- 30:12in tight moments he does not want to get those creative play
- 30:14calls going and it's like that's the issue.
- 30:17It's not that he doesn't design creative plays.
- 30:19It's like this is the time to pull that creative roll out with
- 30:24the with with with Benji Gosnell trickling back.
- 30:29Right up the scene with a crosser coming where they don't
- 30:32know where to go and he's rolling.
- 30:33So the linebackers leaving their space, the safeties are out of
- 30:36place. That's what he doesn't know how
- 30:37to do. Now agree.
- 30:39I agree with that. I thought he called a pretty
- 30:41good game. I might be in the minority here.
- 30:43I thought he called a pretty good game against Rutgers.
- 30:44I thought that execution wasn't there.
- 30:46I thought, I thought the play calling was pretty good against
- 30:48Rutgers. I thought the play calling early
- 30:50in this game was pretty good and then he just went away from it.
- 30:53And you know, again, Tech was playing from behind the 8 ball
- 30:57right before halftime and then on throughout the second-half
- 30:59and just kind of went away from what was working early in the
- 31:03game. Yeah, it seemed like he didn't
- 31:05go back to it until it's like, all right, we're in desperation
- 31:07mode where if we don't score on this drive, this game is over.
- 31:11And that's when he finally, like the the switch finally clicked.
- 31:14He was like, all right, maybe we need to get back to the running
- 31:16game. Maybe we need to use drones in
- 31:18the running game to generate some offense cuz you weren't
- 31:22generating it consistently enough with.
- 31:25Air Raid concepts and a couple of inside runs with Thomas and
- 31:29let's talk about it tootin was very effective and Thomas had a
- 31:32lot of run in that second and third quarter where he was very
- 31:35ineffective and we just kept him on the field for drive after
- 31:40drive. So that that kind of frustrated
- 31:44me too. I don't know if that was a call
- 31:45by Brooks. I don't know what The Who, who's
- 31:48controlling the rotation there at at the running back position
- 31:52on a game day situation, but it just felt like.
- 31:57We're getting back to a point in this We had similar criticisms
- 31:59of the last office of coordinator, like situational
- 32:02play calling is not where it needs to be.
- 32:06And you don't need to be great at it.
- 32:08You just need to be good at it. You don't need to be great.
- 32:10You just need to be good. All right, let's move on.
- 32:12Let's flip over to defense. All right, Mike, The floor is
- 32:15yours, man. Mike wanted to go on.
- 32:17This is this is the only reason he came on here.
- 32:19Y'all he wanted to go on this rant.
- 32:21So Mike Floor's yours, 2 carries, 117 yards and two
- 32:28touchdowns for Rachina Lee. 68 1/2 yards for carry, that's
- 32:32that's pretty good for two runs. Then he also had 25 other runs,
- 32:36went for 57 yards and averages over 2 yards per carry.
- 32:40The the run fit issues are just unfathomable.
- 32:45I don't understand it. Like the linebacker play in
- 32:48particular has been so bad, and I get that.
- 32:52There's there's personnel issue, there's mismatched personnel.
- 32:54Guys play in our position at linebacker.
- 32:56I get all that and they're they're trying to get more
- 32:58athletic and more talented. There's no excuse for the run
- 33:01fits. That's that's got nothing like
- 33:03being more athletic and getting more talented at linebacker,
- 33:07that's got nothing to do with run fits, right?
- 33:10Fill the gap on the right, You call defense, you have a
- 33:13defensive play call. Fill the gap you're supposed to
- 33:16fill. And how many times this year
- 33:18have we seen explosive runs through the first four games?
- 33:21That should never have happened. It's just fundamental football.
- 33:25I mean, that's all that it is. It's just fundamental football.
- 33:28We can have a conversation about Okay, linebackers aren't big
- 33:31enough or they're not fast enough.
- 33:32Not like enough. They're not wrapping up.
- 33:34We can have that conversation. That's not what this is about.
- 33:37It's a run fit issue. It's been a run fit issue and
- 33:40hasn't been corrected. Brent Pride led unbelievably
- 33:44good defense is a Penn State. Like good defense is a
- 33:46Vanderbilt under Franklin and he comes here and I get that.
- 33:50He wants to kind of bring Chris Marvel along, have him under his
- 33:54wing, have this defense like you know in his image, right.
- 33:58He's got that. He's got the the scheme that he
- 34:01wants to implement. He's got the guy that he wants
- 34:03to bring along and mentor, right.
- 34:06The issue is that PRI was over involved defensively last year
- 34:11and I thought the defense throughout the year, given how
- 34:13bad the offense was, I thought the defense hung in there last
- 34:15year. PRI is now more hands off and
- 34:19everything's going to hell. Tech had some issues on defense
- 34:22last year. It was run fit issues from time
- 34:24to time. It wasn't like this though.
- 34:26This is unbelievable to me how bad the run fits are and I get
- 34:30they're down to you know, you're down to starting safeties.
- 34:33I get that you've had, you know, injuries on the defense.
- 34:36I understand all of that, but there's just no excuse for the
- 34:39for the run, fit issues through four games now, right?
- 34:43We're going into conference play against the Pittsburgh team and
- 34:46we'll talk about it in a bit. It's not that great, right?
- 34:49Not very good. And I've got zero confidence
- 34:53that this team's going to stop the run on Saturday 0.
- 34:55Confidence because I think they can do it in spurts.
- 34:59Obviously there was you know, 25 out of 27 carries by Ali on on
- 35:04on Saturday against Marshall. They did it.
- 35:06They're pretty good, pretty good.
- 35:09But it's the two that they didn't which end up costing you
- 35:12the football game. And it's been kind of a week
- 35:14over week thing and it's just been inconsistency on the
- 35:17defensive side of the football has now become a hallmark of a
- 35:20Brent Pride head coach team, which is the problem.
- 35:23It's the inconsistency of stopping the run and that's what
- 35:26it is, because if you look at the other metrics, Mike and I'm
- 35:29sure you have and y'all probably have too.
- 35:32We're like upper echelon pass defense.
- 35:33Well, we always go back to, well, if you can run the ball on
- 35:36us, you're not gonna pass the ball.
- 35:37That makes sense. We forced turnovers.
- 35:40We forced 3 interceptions. We are a middle of the pack team
- 35:44in Tfls. We are middle of the pack team
- 35:45in Sacs. You start looking at the
- 35:47metrics, We're Okay. It's stopping third down and it
- 35:50says Okay, We're Okay here. It's the one glaring issue,
- 35:54right? It's the one glaring issue that
- 35:57I think if you said it's somehow between now and the end of next
- 36:00month, it can get fixed. This team will go from us
- 36:04wanting to throw shit to probably being like, you know
- 36:06what that used to be a 35 yard run.
- 36:09It's a 10 yard run now. Well.
- 36:11The thing. Is down, yes, but it's not
- 36:14killing you. And that's what the that's what
- 36:16it is. Go back and look every game.
- 36:18This year we've played every game.
- 36:21The big runs, the big runs, if what's killed it, the big runs
- 36:24are why we're losing the games. We can talk about the other
- 36:27shit, y'all know that. But that's what's losing us.
- 36:30The games it's not. Oh, we didn't.
- 36:32We lost them last year. It lost them last year.
- 36:35I lost PIT last year. Jesus Christ.
- 36:38We don't want to talk about pit last year.
- 36:40We're talking about the pit this year.
- 36:43We'll put, you know what, Brian, but hold on, hold on.
- 36:45Can I say something real quick? I'm going to give you a floor
- 36:46tally in a second. We are stepped back.
- 36:49We're in the pit to Georgia Tech phase again.
- 36:53We've taken that step back because look at the games.
- 36:57We're not getting the shit kicked out of us like we did
- 36:59against UNC, like we did against West Virginia, like some of
- 37:03those early games we're not. It's that same threshold where
- 37:08we were last year from PIT up to Liberty, where we do one fucking
- 37:12thing wrong. We make one bad fit.
- 37:15We screw up one bad penalty, one holding, one false start, one
- 37:19false start on Saturday, by the way, 4th and one to 4th and 6th
- 37:22with the Game Online bitch. It's one little do y'all see
- 37:28what I'm saying? It's like we thought we were
- 37:30over that and now we're we're right back in it.
- 37:33Yeah, we were hoping this year as Tally is is prone to say that
- 37:38we were in the win by a little stage, but we're back in the
- 37:40lose by a little stage, so go. Well, the thing that yeah,
- 37:45because the thing that's concerning is like Brett Pride
- 37:49is a defensive coach. You know, you came to a no
- 37:53matter what Virginia Tech wants to be, they're known as a
- 37:56defensive school. You know, like we've always been
- 37:59known to have a the lunch pail defense.
- 38:02Take that away. We don't have to be the lunch
- 38:04pail anymore because we can't fucking stop nobody from
- 38:06scoring. But anyway, Pride is a defensive
- 38:09coach and I just don't see him like.
- 38:13With the fire, when things are going wrong, because he's seen
- 38:17it like I I have no doubt that he has in his mind how things
- 38:22are supposed to look and how he can fix it.
- 38:25But standing on the sidelines writing stuff down on a piece of
- 38:28paper ain't fixing it, you know, Doing it at practice ain't
- 38:32fixing it. Maybe in the game you need to
- 38:34get in a coach's ass or a player's ass or put somebody
- 38:37else in. I don't know what the right
- 38:38thing to do is. That's why I'm not getting paid
- 38:40$4 million to coach the team. I'm just saying as a defensive
- 38:44coach, going to a defensive school, you can't keep having
- 38:49the same defensive problems and think that everybody's going to
- 38:52be okay with it. Like at some point you got to
- 38:55win. And I don't just mean win on
- 38:57like in the win column, I mean. Not have the explosive play.
- 39:03They threw a touchdown and beat us.
- 39:05It's got to be something different.
- 39:06We keep saying the same thing, the same thing over and over.
- 39:10Kind of like what Mike said, what Curtis said and for me it
- 39:13it's the head coach like it's on him.
- 39:16It's the second year we're we're regressing.
- 39:19We're seeing the same thing over that we've seen last year and
- 39:23hell, it's fucking it's. Embarrassing at this point.
- 39:27You know, you're getting commentators that starting to
- 39:30say stuff that are just like, well, sooner or later, Virginia
- 39:34Tech's going to have to leave or have to do more than just have a
- 39:37cool entrance. They said something like that
- 39:39the other day. I've been saying that.
- 39:42But when I hear somebody else say, it pisses me off, you know,
- 39:45So the head coach and again, like Mike said, and I'm going to
- 39:48give it back to you, Curtis. He was so great at press
- 39:53conferences in the offseason. I think he has to flip a switch
- 39:57now and he has to kind of like Biggie said, you got to lean
- 40:01into the beef sometime. You got to address the hard
- 40:04stuff. You got to start saying, look, I
- 40:07hear what y'all are saying about this team and we're going to fix
- 40:10it. If we got to scorch the earth,
- 40:13we're going to make sure that this works instead of just doing
- 40:16the hey, we going to make it. It's going to be okay.
- 40:19We kind of get now we do it. Hey man, stop the stop the sweet
- 40:22talking. You know what I want?
- 40:24You know what I want? You talk about the Big E blind.
- 40:27I want to enter defensive coordinator in him to come out
- 40:30because defensive coordinators don't act like that on the
- 40:32sidelines. We saw Bud for years.
- 40:34We even saw you ever watch some of the Penn State games.
- 40:36He was a fiery guy on the. Yeah, exactly.
- 40:39He's got to find that because I think that's what's missing on
- 40:43that side of the ball. I think so.
- 40:45On that side of the ball and we said and and we sat down like
- 40:49for the Purdue game we were right behind the bench.
- 40:51Chris Mark give Chris Mark credit Chris Mark did have fire
- 40:54on the sidelines you we saw him like getting in guys faces
- 40:58grabbing face masks hitting you know doing the old thing like
- 41:02good job probably was calm the whole game.
- 41:05I think what it is is a lot of the team is following that.
- 41:09Yeah, you need to be cool under pressure, but sometimes you got
- 41:11as as we say it on this program, like, I'll let you nuts hang.
- 41:15He's got to let his nuts sang in somebody's face.
- 41:17The prime opportunity, especially as bad as run fits
- 41:20would have been, was getting after Will Johnson when he
- 41:23missed that fit on that first touchdown run.
- 41:25Like, literally come here. Why are you looking where the
- 41:29quarterback's going? You are in B gap.
- 41:31You get the fuck to B Gap and you stop his ass.
- 41:34I don't care if you just get an arm or if you get a part of a
- 41:37leg. Guess what that's going to do?
- 41:39That's going to make clean up a lot easier 10 yards down the
- 41:42field than it is 61 in the end zone.
- 41:46Anything else from Saturday? I'll play for you anytime,
- 41:51Curtis. Jesus.
- 41:52I thought Curtis Red is always a fun thing.
- 41:56Yeah, I thought about playing for Curtis until he just said
- 41:58somebody needs to let the nuts hang in somebody's face.
- 42:02Definitely. Just take everybody's face.
- 42:04I promise you, you did. No.
- 42:07Well, you go back and listen to this.
- 42:10Why? You better not.
- 42:11You better not edit it. I'm not editing it out the
- 42:13teabag. I'm not editing it out.
- 42:14The Teabag Man Teabag stays in. What else do we see from
- 42:21Saturday that that was bad? I mean, we went through bouts
- 42:28where we're not, we're getting consistent pressure.
- 42:30I mean, I know they weren't throwing the ball very much, but
- 42:33I feel like. Since ODUI haven't seen the
- 42:38consistent pressure that I want to see.
- 42:39I think we're we're getting some hurries but we're not getting
- 42:42home and getting those sacks and getting them in long down and
- 42:46distant situations that would benefit our team and help on
- 42:49those downs where we're surrendering these long ass
- 42:52runs. You know they might be throwing
- 42:55the ball if we can get them in 3rd and 12 and 3rd and 9
- 42:58consistently. I got.
- 43:03I got one piece for y'all and we're not we're not the worst
- 43:09team in the country and I'm the bottom 10.
- 43:10We're, I think we're like 72nd, but it's the penalties and it's
- 43:14the stupid penalties, 6 fall starts, 6 fall starts.
- 43:20We're regressing there again. We're regressing there again.
- 43:23We're regressing there again. And then we had a couple
- 43:26offsides and I know I got two guys here, one play D line, they
- 43:30both played on the offensive line.
- 43:33That's that's them. Y'all said it before Italian
- 43:36Brian. Like that's that's not coaching,
- 43:39that's you. You're supposed to do your job.
- 43:41You know what you're supposed to do?
- 43:44That's that's thinking too much about other stuff and not not
- 43:48staying focused on what the task at hand is because and and I
- 43:53know they're practicing enough where from a mental Rep
- 43:56standpoint, this should not be a problem.
- 43:59I'm I'm not concerned about that.
- 44:02Because if you're repping it and you're repping these situational
- 44:07calls where you're going on a different count, are you, are
- 44:10you doing this even in an even in a hostile environment like
- 44:13Marshall? I know that's not, you know,
- 44:14hostile. I'll use quotes here.
- 44:17It's a road game, right? So I mean that that really
- 44:21shouldn't be a a problem, that that is you thinking too much
- 44:25about your assignment or you got beat last time and you're trying
- 44:29to get one back. And all this other stuff, and
- 44:32now you know you're doing too much.
- 44:35Do less. It's fear.
- 44:38That's, that's what it is. I hate to say that as an
- 44:40offensive lineman, tight in a lot of times jumping outside is
- 44:44fear. Or if you seen even like wide
- 44:47receivers or somebody jumps at them and they flinch.
- 44:50It's fear, you know, because you're reacting to what's going
- 44:54on around you or what the other person is doing.
- 44:56I've talked about it before. When you're on that line, it's a
- 45:01lot of stuff that's being said. You know, you got the
- 45:03quarterback making calls, you got your center supposed to be
- 45:05calling some things out. You got their defensive captain,
- 45:09probably linebacker making some calls.
- 45:10You got your lineman switching and moving and you got lineman
- 45:14that's probably talking shit. And if I did to 70 what 55 did,
- 45:18I would be saying do y'all know what I'm about to do.
- 45:21I'm going to go kill your quarterback.
- 45:23I'm about to fuck y'all up again.
- 45:24We'll get some Alvin Mac folks in here.
- 45:27Exactly. Bad.
- 45:29We don't even talk about this movie right now.
- 45:31But, well, last piece. You can see the fear, you see
- 45:37the fear on our offensive line and I think it's what pisses me
- 45:40off. Go ahead Curtis.
- 45:42Well the last piece I got and it goes back to some we talked
- 45:45about probably 20 minutes ago. Now is we are having another,
- 45:49again, lack of complimentary football because we forced the
- 45:52turnover. We get nothing.
- 45:54We have a string of them going 3 and outs.
- 45:57We get nothing. Prac keeps preaching it,
- 46:00complimenting football, complimenting football.
- 46:02Eventually you got to do something.
- 46:04And The thing is, everything. We're kind of leading up to
- 46:07this, right? It's great.
- 46:09Those those four drives, they could not run the ball, they
- 46:12could not pass the ball. But you know what?
- 46:14You were so conservative and you were tight.
- 46:17You didn't attack. You didn't attack just like
- 46:21Y'all were talking about take somebody put on here a while
- 46:23ago, Why didn't we take a shot on 1st down when we were right
- 46:27there after the turnover? That's your prime time take a
- 46:29shot. So it's it's this whole, if you
- 46:32won't call any football, you've got to do the right things in
- 46:35those points. And right now we're not seeing
- 46:39it. And the bad thing is we're
- 46:41seeing pieces here and there. All right, Y'all got anything
- 46:44else on what went bad? Because I think we just went 20
- 46:46minutes or 25 minutes on what went bad.
- 46:49Yeah. And I mean, I'll, I'll finish
- 46:51one more thing here, wrap it up, let's take you to the next one.
- 46:54Yeah, you you talk about the the complimentary football, but it's
- 46:57also it's like we we can't seem to do each of those.
- 47:03Like you have buckets of things, things you have like you do
- 47:06every week, right. These are the things we need to
- 47:07do this week and like. One bucket will look good for
- 47:111/4 and another bucket will look good for 1/4.
- 47:13Another like a different quarter and but we're not piercing
- 47:16together other than like coming out of the gate in the first
- 47:19quarter. We did never piece the rest of
- 47:22the game together where everyone all of those buckets were kind
- 47:26of working In Sync, yeah. And that's only for like a
- 47:29couple of possessions in the first quarter too.
- 47:31You know, it wasn't even, I know it was a it was a pretty quick
- 47:34quarter, but it was really just those first.
- 47:37You know, it was the the one offensive procession and where
- 47:39they, you know, go out and score, get the interception and
- 47:42then that was about it. Then it just kind of stopped,
- 47:44right? Especially on the offensive
- 47:46side. All righty.
- 47:48All right, let's move on to the next one.
- 47:50Cuz we've talked enough about that we probably could talk
- 47:52another 15 minutes about it, but eventually we have to move on.
- 47:55We have a lot more stuff talk about and the next piece is, did
- 47:59anything happen that you were not prepared for?
- 48:01I'm gonna just tell you all this, nothing shocks me anymore
- 48:04right now with this team. Nope, it likes to me.
- 48:11I got a kind of positive, I got a kind of +1 that I was really
- 48:16prepared for. So I we haven't seen a lot of of
- 48:20drones, you know him coming from Baylor and then him practicing
- 48:24and that's not now this is not the pat him on the back because
- 48:27he still has to get better. But I was shocked at how.
- 48:31How strong he is. If you watch some of his runs,
- 48:34he's starting to fall forward on that touchdown run, he wasn't
- 48:38supposed supposed to score. I mean, he was locked up and he
- 48:41broke out of there. And not only did he break out of
- 48:43there, he accelerated, you know? So that kind of shocked me.
- 48:48Now that takes me to kind of another point.
- 48:51Once you start seeing somebody game, once you start seeing
- 48:54somebody be a gamer, you got to build off of that.
- 48:57If you see that he has that. You got to let him cook.
- 49:02You got to let him do that. Hey man, you remember in the
- 49:05first quarter or you got bottled up and that you didn't go down.
- 49:08You kept your legs turning. I need that.
- 49:11We need 3 yards. That's what we got to see.
- 49:14I'm going to ask you a question to y'all because I don't know
- 49:17the answer. I wish I had Shelton here.
- 49:19How many offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches are in
- 49:23the in the booth like across college football?
- 49:27Do y'all know I I can I do not know that I'll I'll I forget
- 49:34while y'all talk about it. Well, it just seems to me
- 49:37because of what Tebow is supposed to be, you know, he's
- 49:42coaching the quarterbacks and they said, oh, he's close to
- 49:44those guys. And you have a quarterback there
- 49:48now in Kyron Drones that has been playing that's very young,
- 49:53but his skill set is a little bit different from somebody like
- 49:55Grant. Would it not help if he's there
- 49:59on the sideline and can talk to him and see what he's seeing and
- 50:03they can have that commentary instead of he get off.
- 50:06You got to pick up the phone. You know you.
- 50:08I don't know, man. It's just it's a it's a lot of
- 50:11stuff that goes on in that coaching stuff that I don't
- 50:12understand. This is this is where having
- 50:15Bowen be both the OC and the QB coach, I think becomes a little
- 50:19bit of a problem, I think because of what you just said.
- 50:22And that's a really good point. That's something I actually
- 50:24hadn't even thought about. And there are a lot of reasons
- 50:27why. So I I was actually originally
- 50:28okay with Bowen being the quarterbacks coach.
- 50:31Like, I didn't love it, but I understood it Now.
- 50:34I'm not as big of a fan of it and Tally.
- 50:36I think that was a great point. And now it's making me wonder
- 50:38like I'm good with the OC being in the booth normally, right?
- 50:43Sees, sees the whole field and all that.
- 50:45But usually you got the quarterback coach on the field,
- 50:47right? You got you know you you used to
- 50:49have Glen on the field just there and you know talk to wells
- 50:52last year don't have that anymore so.
- 50:56Yeah, I don't know what the right answer is there.
- 50:57That's a great point. And I think that would be okay
- 51:00if you had a experienced offensive coordinator and an
- 51:04experienced quarterback coach. But Bowen is neither right now.
- 51:09Yeah. So it's kind of that double
- 51:11whammy and as someone that has been on the been on the sideline
- 51:15and been in a booth and in a game situation talking about you
- 51:18in the booth. I hated being the booth.
- 51:23I mean, I'm an energy guy. I I need the energy of the
- 51:26sideline to kind of get in the right mindset and like get hyper
- 51:30focused on what I'm seeing being in the booth.
- 51:32It was too detached from that for me.
- 51:36And I feel like with when you got a inexperienced quarterback,
- 51:41you got an inexperienced coordinator and and he's
- 51:44inexperienced at coaching the quarterback position.
- 51:48Any way that they can engage more dynamically on the
- 51:51sideline, I feel like would be a good thing in terms of both
- 51:54Bowen's growth and drones growth.
- 51:58I'm I'm with you on that and I think it's you'll make really
- 52:01good points across about he needs to be down there.
- 52:03But the question is who do you put in the booth then you're
- 52:06going to have, you're going to have.
- 52:08Right now there's only one guy up there, Cuz Fontel's on the
- 52:11field, Crook's on the field and Stew's on the field.
- 52:13And I see it. Four of the offensive coaching
- 52:16staff members are on the field. It's only Bowen and probably an
- 52:20analyst up in the booth. If you bring him down, who goes
- 52:24up? It's not.
- 52:24It's got to be. It's got to be.
- 52:26Brooks. It's got to be Brooks and I
- 52:29don't know how often Brooks has been up there, but I will say
- 52:32this and and you know Coach Pride, if you listen to this, we
- 52:36still love you. Please come back next year.
- 52:40But let's be realistic though. We have seen pride make changes.
- 52:44He's not afraid to do something different.
- 52:46We saw it in the offseason. We've already seen it this
- 52:48season because remember last year, Glenn and Bowen were in
- 52:52the booth, then Glenn came down later in the season.
- 52:56Remember that, that to his credit, he will make the changes
- 53:03and then you just have to decide who goes up.
- 53:05Because right now, if y'all look it's Fontelle is effectively the
- 53:08guy getting the huddle, calling those first set of plays and
- 53:14sending them to the field. He's the juice guy.
- 53:16He's also getting getting the calls in.
- 53:18But the other thing is you see a lot of times and y'all follow a
- 53:21lot of football. Usually the wide receivers coach
- 53:24is up in the booth to effectively see what's the
- 53:27backs, coverages and to see what routes or should we rerunning
- 53:30into. So we'll see how that goes.
- 53:32All right. Anything else?
- 53:35Brian, you already mentioned your anything else y'all we're
- 53:37not prepared for. Tally went positive there.
- 53:42As positive as you could be after losing the Marshall, I'm
- 53:48laughing at comments here. So.
- 53:49Yeah, I was reading that too. And Jerry still let it, man.
- 53:58Listen, we we we can't fire somebody every 15 games.
- 54:02Y'all y'all got to put that in your head.
- 54:03Where's the money coming from? Where's the?
- 54:05Because if you pull him out right now, if you can pay 23 and
- 54:08a half million dollars stroke to check, get him out, nobody'd
- 54:11have a problem. Are we still?
- 54:12Paying for Are we still paying for Winte?
- 54:14We're still paying for Winte. That's why I thought so.
- 54:17If you got 33 million, stroke it to the athletic department.
- 54:20We can get rid of pride. Yeah, shit don't work like that.
- 54:23You can't just fire, fire fire fire, by the way.
- 54:26We don't have Tennessee booster money.
- 54:29Tennessee didn't even do that shit.
- 54:30They gave guys three years at least before they fired him.
- 54:34Y'all this ain't mad and this ain't college football on your
- 54:36PlayStation. You've got to look through the
- 54:38lens of if it goes really bad this year, he's got next year to
- 54:42win a lot of games and that's it.
- 54:45But I think we also this year and he turns it around this year
- 54:49by the way and ready. All love, baby.
- 54:53All love. All love.
- 54:55We we get heated. No we get heated.
- 54:57We won't our program to be good because we've seen it good.
- 55:00And I think the other thing, so we'll say this real quick just
- 55:02to kind of piggyback on that, you know, when we talk about
- 55:06this whole coaching thing like. I love what Dion's doing in
- 55:10Colorado. That's not something that you
- 55:12can replicate in every scenario across the country one.
- 55:17Of 1, Even when you talk about bringing in a former player,
- 55:21like highest profile possible, it's Dion is Dion.
- 55:27Dion's always been Dion one of one.
- 55:30There's like he's one of one and there's only like maybe two or
- 55:34three other guys even in that category that.
- 55:38Took the path that he took to kind of get there, right?
- 55:40So hold on, hold on. You want to talk about Dion?
- 55:43He started coaching high school football over a decade ago.
- 55:48He started coaching high school football.
- 55:50He did from 12 to 13. Then he went to Trinity
- 55:53Christian, which I believe is a pretty top notch where he was an
- 55:56OC. Wagon.
- 55:59Then he went to Jackson State. Dion just didn't jump into
- 56:03Colorado. Dion took this as his path.
- 56:06Deon started this in 2012. Did everybody know that?
- 56:11Did everybody know Deon was coaching high school football in
- 56:13Texas for damn near 8 years where he took to Jackson State
- 56:16job? Nobody did.
- 56:18If you did, you ain't been paying attention.
- 56:20I'll go on a small a small tangent here just so people
- 56:24understand how, because they talk about the culture and
- 56:26stuff. And I guess I got to be the
- 56:27black spokesperson for this. So a lot of people have hitched
- 56:32their wagon to Deon because. High talks, high dresses, things
- 56:36that he does with his team, how outspoken he is, which beyond
- 56:42coaches like he played. He's prime time.
- 56:45He's the only person who can do that and get away with that.
- 56:49There is a lot of black coaches out there too, and I want to say
- 56:52a lot as in millions, hundreds, thousands, 20, but I'm saying
- 56:58there's a lot of good black coaches out there.
- 57:00You talk about Locksley, you talk about.
- 57:04James Franklin, You know those guys are undefeated right now.
- 57:07You know when you talk about black coaches being at big time
- 57:11programs, I say all that to say, the thing that bothers me about
- 57:16Dion is that I feel that and I don't want to mess this up.
- 57:22But he's put a target on his back.
- 57:23He's put a target on his team's back and now they got to live up
- 57:27to it. You know, I know they only won
- 57:30one game last year, no games last year.
- 57:32They won three. Great job.
- 57:35But going and getting Curb stopped by Oregon didn't look
- 57:38good. And then now you got USC that
- 57:41you got an answer to and you're a 20 point underdog and that.
- 57:44And then you know he goes and he says, well they better get me
- 57:47now because it's the worst I'm going to be.
- 57:48I've heard that before and his name was Justin Fuente.
- 57:53That comment didn't doesn't resonate that well with me.
- 57:56So Dion has a lot of work to do with his players and his team.
- 58:00If he wants to go to that next level and start to, you know,
- 58:03win those big time games and things like that, Kudos the deal
- 58:06for what he's doing though. All right, all right, y'all
- 58:09let's just talk real quick because we've got two more
- 58:12things before we hit break here. What can we do better moving
- 58:15forward? Brian, I'm going to let you
- 58:17leave this because we we've been talking about 70 a lot.
- 58:25Yeah, you got to get Brody at left at right tackle there.
- 58:28Get Brody Meadows at right tackle.
- 58:30I know he's mostly played guard so far in the season, but
- 58:33there's a when we when we look at the 2D, Brody's listed as the
- 58:37backup left tackle, OK, but the the 2D means Jack shit for an
- 58:41offensive line. You're really talking about your
- 58:43five starters plus two guys that you're comfortable with, maybe
- 58:46three at the most that you're comfortable with playing in the
- 58:49game, so. Given where the depth chart is
- 58:53and where Brody's played, they're essentially using him as
- 58:56a guy that can be a kind of a swing tackle.
- 58:57Swing guard can jump in either of those spots when needed.
- 59:01Get him at right tackle, get Parker off the field.
- 59:04He's got lazy feet, he's not graded and run blocking.
- 59:08Get him off the field. He is a big, big, big time
- 59:13hindrance to both the running game and pass pro at this point.
- 59:18And and really disappointing because you know by all accounts
- 59:21had a really good spring and good offseason and then you know
- 59:24we we see a couple things here there and now the you know the
- 59:28the wheels falling off the wagon again.
- 59:29So yeah, get Parker off the field.
- 59:33Get Brody Meadows in there, Mike.
- 59:35What you got, man? Just play some complimentary
- 59:39football for the love of God like it doesn't need to.
- 59:44Be thanks, Coach Brian. It doesn't have to be that God
- 59:46damn difficult. Like just run the football,
- 59:50stick with it when it's working. If the passing game's working,
- 59:54stick with that. Run fits.
- 59:57Clean it up, wrap up. It doesn't.
- 1:00:01This does not have to be as difficult as we're making it,
- 1:00:04and it's not. I'm so sick of hearing the
- 1:00:05talent excuse too. Like I, I, I will look last
- 1:00:11year, yes, go last year, yes. Go play Florida State.
- 1:00:14Talent issue? Fine.
- 1:00:16Go play other, you know, go play NC State later in the year.
- 1:00:19If you want to talk about talent issue, that's fine there.
- 1:00:23The teams that Tech's played so far through four games, this
- 1:00:27isn't a talent thing. This is a coaching thing.
- 1:00:30I mean these are, these are four, these are four teams that
- 1:00:35you know could be had. It wasn't like Virginia Tech was
- 1:00:38going into these games, the two touchdown underdog.
- 1:00:40Right, so. Rutgers is probably the only
- 1:00:43team that is close to us in terms of talent.
- 1:00:47You might give them the slight edge beak at home.
- 1:00:49We shouldn't have got waxed the way we did waxed the score ended
- 1:00:55up looking a little bit better than that game actually went for
- 1:00:59much of the second-half. I mean it was we'll come back at
- 1:01:02the end there. But yeah, Tally, what about you?
- 1:01:06Was one thing we got to do better moving forward.
- 1:01:08I was going to say it earlier, but you got to give Tooten.
- 1:01:12You got to give Tooten more run. I did say that part earlier.
- 1:01:15I don't know man, Malachi just he doesn't look the same as as I
- 1:01:19remember him looking with just how he's running.
- 1:01:23So I don't know why we keep trying to go back to him.
- 1:01:26We haven't seen Chance Black, we haven't seen Bryce Duke.
- 1:01:30So if we're not going to see them, you got to tell Tooten.
- 1:01:33Look, man, if you're tired, just fall down on the field.
- 1:01:37Because you're getting the ball 40 fucking times.
- 1:01:39If we if we if. If we are moving the ball, you
- 1:01:43running it. That's what's happening.
- 1:01:46Give him the ball, man. Give him some runs.
- 1:01:49Yeah, where has Chance black man?
- 1:01:50I feel like. I feel like he's been walking
- 1:01:51for. Nowhere right now.
- 1:01:54He's not been on any. I don't think I've seen 28 on
- 1:01:56the field at all this year. Now, where's David Cunningham
- 1:01:59when we need him? David could pull up and tell us
- 1:02:00if he's had the staff. David, if you're out there
- 1:02:03listening tonight, throw us in the chat or text one of us.
- 1:02:06All right, we are a third of the way through the season at one
- 1:02:09and four, obviously, if y'all can't tell, we went on an hour
- 1:02:12and 3 minutes. We're pissed about the record,
- 1:02:15we're pissed about all the things happening, right?
- 1:02:17Y'all are pissed. We see it over here in the chat.
- 1:02:20Y'all are pissed and there's people out there not responding
- 1:02:23that are sending Dms, Twitter, Facebook.
- 1:02:26Everybody's pissed right now. So I wanna ask y'all this and?
- 1:02:32Who do I start with last time? Ron.
- 1:02:34Mike, I'll start with you this time.
- 1:02:36What's the one thing in the next four games?
- 1:02:38You have to see I've harped enough on the run, fits.
- 1:02:44Offensive, offensive, offensive identity.
- 1:02:48What kind of team do you want to be?
- 1:02:50I get that you have injuries at receiver.
- 1:02:53You had an injury at quarterback that changed the Staffs thinking
- 1:02:56as far as you know what they can and can't do, right, We got to
- 1:03:01see some sort of offense by daddy, right?
- 1:03:04Jalen Lane. I think it's starting to get
- 1:03:05healthier. Jennings is going to be out a
- 1:03:07while. But drones is the guy, right?
- 1:03:11I mean, Wells can get healthy, but in my opinion, drones is the
- 1:03:14guy. So what kind of offense do you
- 1:03:16want to be under Kyron? Drones.
- 1:03:18Because you got to figure out here in year two when you're
- 1:03:21rebuilding, it's not going well. You got to figure out, at least
- 1:03:23on the offensive side, if Kyron Drones is going to be your
- 1:03:25quarterback moving forward. That's what you got to decide
- 1:03:27this year. You got to figure that out.
- 1:03:29If, if you're not going to come out, if you're going to lose
- 1:03:31every game, the rest of the schedule, you at least got to
- 1:03:34figure out who your quarterback is going to be next year.
- 1:03:36Because we already have an inexperienced offensive
- 1:03:39coordinator, we have an inexperienced defensive
- 1:03:40coordinator and we have a first time head coach.
- 1:03:43We can't miss on quarterback too.
- 1:03:44You got to figure out who your quarterback's going to be.
- 1:03:46So we got to figure out offense by Daddy over the next four
- 1:03:49games. All right, Tally.
- 1:03:51What about you, man? What do you got to see the next
- 1:03:52four games? I just say making adjustments
- 1:03:55quicker. You know, I think I see some
- 1:03:57adjustments on defense and. Even offense in the fourth
- 1:04:01quarter, we've seen some adjustments, but those
- 1:04:03adjustments have to be made a lot quicker than they've been
- 1:04:06being made. And it's like it's not stuff
- 1:04:09that's hard. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:04:12I don't even say that. Those two words that might keep
- 1:04:14saying bum, bum, you got to do those.
- 1:04:17Like when you see those are gone, you got to go talk and
- 1:04:20have those and correct them. If somebody can't do that on the
- 1:04:23field, let's go to somebody else.
- 1:04:25I'm okay with playing all freshmen and losing every game.
- 1:04:29I I'm Okay with Kyron drones losing every game.
- 1:04:33If we're trying to figure out what we're doing moving forward,
- 1:04:36you know what I'm saying? If we're putting in offensive
- 1:04:38lineman that are freshmen and they're getting blew up because
- 1:04:41our seniors again blew up, Okay well at least we got some run
- 1:04:45for next year. We can, we can talk about the
- 1:04:47the youth movement, but I need to see those adjustments being
- 1:04:52made much quicker than they are in the games that we can at
- 1:04:55least have a chance to win. Take a look.
- 1:05:00I said it on Twitter or X or whatever the fuck we're calling
- 1:05:03it now. Twitter You tweeted it.
- 1:05:06I'll say it again. I need to see four quarters of
- 1:05:10competent coaching and play execution.
- 1:05:14If you get beat, you get beat. But when you are not executing
- 1:05:20and when the coaches are not correcting, when the coaches are
- 1:05:24going away from a game plan, that's working.
- 1:05:28Then that's not competent quarterback play.
- 1:05:30That's not competent coaching. That's not competent execution
- 1:05:33by the guys at the trenches, the guys at the linebacker core.
- 1:05:38I need to see four quarters of that, win or lose, get your ass
- 1:05:42beat. Whatever it is, I I need the
- 1:05:44product to look like it's supposed to.
- 1:05:47And to Mike's point earlier, you know the offensive identity.
- 1:05:52I felt like we had some of that against Rutgers.
- 1:05:55That was kind of if we could. Take steps off of what that is.
- 1:06:00I could live with that offense because at least I know what
- 1:06:04it's trying to do. But could, but.
- 1:06:06But we could probably live with the offense that we saw on
- 1:06:10those, what, four to five drives?
- 1:06:12At Marshall, it was like power runs, taking shots, quick
- 1:06:16slants. It's like a little screen or
- 1:06:18two. OK, that's what you are.
- 1:06:21You're almost like a jab, jab, monster throw.
- 1:06:24That's what you are. You're not just slinging
- 1:06:26haymakers all the time. All right, I got one before we
- 1:06:30go to break here and mine is it's kind of going to hinder
- 1:06:32what Tally said, make the right personnel decisions regardless
- 1:06:35of winning or losing. If a senior or junior is just
- 1:06:39not cutting it, what's Pete saying there?
- 1:06:45Pete, we do something good. Hold on.
- 1:06:48I'm gonna. Mess with him right here, Pete.
- 1:06:49We're punting the ball. Good.
- 1:06:50Peter Moore is booming the hell out of it this year.
- 1:06:52He's. If Peter Moore was kicking like
- 1:06:54he was last year, we might have lost a few games by more than
- 1:06:57one score. So for the 13 yard point, he did
- 1:07:00what last? Week.
- 1:07:01Oh, you talk about the killer. He said.
- 1:07:03He said 22 punts this year that have just been like,
- 1:07:06uncharacteristically short, you know what it was.
- 1:07:08And then the rest have been fucking boom sticks.
- 1:07:11Yes. Bad time, yeah.
- 1:07:13Those two punts too, it's like he was trying to kick him as
- 1:07:16deep as possible and like it land at the three and then zip
- 1:07:20back and you're like. Still inside the 15, he'd boom
- 1:07:22the shit out of it, but make the right personnel decisions if
- 1:07:25there's juniors and seniors not doing it.
- 1:07:27Cuz right now I did the I did a data dive.
- 1:07:29Y'all offensively, snaps counted. 50% are red shirt.
- 1:07:34Sophomores are younger, 50% are juniors.
- 1:07:36Defense is 5347 with the older guys, and that's an older guys
- 1:07:41with a lot of them on the line. And y'all know they do not
- 1:07:43rotate as much as they do other players.
- 1:07:46You've got to make it right. Brian's already called for
- 1:07:48Meadows to write tackle. I'll, I'll go one up on you,
- 1:07:51Brian. We've mentioned a few times on
- 1:07:52this program and I don't know if you've been listening to it.
- 1:07:57Mike put Jack Hollyfield at center.
- 1:07:59Kate more back out to guard. Yeah yeah you can't.
- 1:08:02The the more experiment at center is a, He's a.
- 1:08:06I don't think it's a disaster. I think he's OK, but he is a
- 1:08:09dominant right guard. If, look, I I will live, I will
- 1:08:15live with having a young guy at center because at least at that
- 1:08:17point we'll have a good right guard there.
- 1:08:19You go right because right now we don't have a good right guard
- 1:08:22or a good center. So at least get one position
- 1:08:25right? Yes, I heard.
- 1:08:26I've, I've heard you guys talk about that.
- 1:08:28You're around the money. By the way, this is a buddy we
- 1:08:30went to high school with. We got, we got.
- 1:08:35Who's in the comments, man? Who's in the comments?
- 1:08:37Baby, Yeah, I don't know, Mario. Mario we didn't know.
- 1:08:41We didn't know Mario for since we were in, since I was in 7th
- 1:08:44grade. Since Brian was in 7th grade, a
- 1:08:46long, long time ago. All right, y'all.
- 1:08:48Before we get in to know the enemy and we discussed the pit
- 1:08:50Panthers, we are going to take a pause from our digital partners.
- 1:08:54I can probably save you a lot of money and I can take a lot
- 1:08:56better care of you. That's pretty much it.
- 1:08:59My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm a pharmacist.
- 1:09:01I want to operate Main Street Pharmacy here in downtown
- 1:09:03Blacksburg. My brother's A pharmacist.
- 1:09:05I'm a pharmacist. My uncle's A pharmacist.
- 1:09:07My dad's a pharmacist. I remember he would give me M
- 1:09:09and M's to count in little pill counters.
- 1:09:12This is something I've always done and I'm just lucky that
- 1:09:15what I know so well is something that I can do and feel good
- 1:09:18about it and get back to. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 1:09:21defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 1:09:24you're getting optimal care for the lowest price possible.
- 1:09:27Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 1:09:29I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 1:09:31doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 1:09:33counter. If there's something that isn't
- 1:09:36commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 1:09:38in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 1:09:41that, we'll make it tailor made medications.
- 1:09:43Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 1:09:45What motivates me? I get to take care of people in
- 1:09:47Limit Blacksburg, I thought. Neat.
- 1:09:52As we take a quick break, we'd like to tell you about getting
- 1:09:55your free website report from our digital partner, Grassroots
- 1:09:57Digital Marketing Studio. They'll tell you how your
- 1:09:59website ranks on Google, on site, SEO and social media.
- 1:10:03No commitment to buy anything. You can get your free report by
- 1:10:06visiting grassroots digitalstudio.com/free Dash
- 1:10:11website Dash Report. Now back to the episode.
- 1:10:13All right, we are back. And now we flip our attention to
- 1:10:16Saturday night. Lane Stadium 8:00, ACC Network
- 1:10:20against the pit Panthers also one and three coming in and I
- 1:10:25take a look here. We got to know the enemy.
- 1:10:30And we're going to talk on the offense first.
- 1:10:32Always like to start with the offense first because it's a lot
- 1:10:34more to discuss. And Brian, let's talk about the
- 1:10:36scheme. We got Frank Signetti, someone
- 1:10:38we're very familiar with, running that offense up the pit.
- 1:10:42Yeah, I mean, you're looking at pro style scheme, got some RPO
- 1:10:46elements mixed in there. But it's, you know, pretty
- 1:10:48straightforward Pro Style scheme.
- 1:10:50They they definitely thrive on explosive plays.
- 1:10:52They want to stretch you downfield.
- 1:10:54They want to hit you with the big gasher in the running game.
- 1:10:57They don't quite hit the home run the same way they did last
- 1:11:00year and that's part of the reason why they are one in three
- 1:11:04and not coming in at least at 500 or better because they're
- 1:11:07not hitting those explosive plays, especially in the passing
- 1:11:09game. Alrighty and and it is something
- 1:11:15they they also lost their home run threat at running back.
- 1:11:19And we know that very personally from last year.
- 1:11:22But let's talk about the quarterbacks first.
- 1:11:23Cuz right now, not a controversy per se, but if y'all didn't see
- 1:11:27that UNC game build Your covers got the shit knocked out of him
- 1:11:31in the second quarter of that game, he was Koed for that game.
- 1:11:36Christian Delu, the three star who was originally committed to
- 1:11:39Penn State. Someone tech flirted with.
- 1:11:43In the offseason did come in, he did not have a good game against
- 1:11:47UNC at all. He threw 2 picks, he threw 45%,
- 1:11:50he looked not good at all and you know Jakovich isn't having a
- 1:11:55good season also this year, just over 50% passing, 4 touchdowns,
- 1:12:003 interceptions. And the the worst part about
- 1:12:02this, I don't know if y'all have been paying attention.
- 1:12:04He's their second leading rusher, like in as far as the
- 1:12:08temps go. And I know Phil's a big kid, but
- 1:12:11and you know Phil was an elite guy coming out, he's and he has
- 1:12:14not lived up to those expectations.
- 1:12:15So, Brian, I know you're going to talk about them a little bit.
- 1:12:20Is there a lot of similarities between these two?
- 1:12:21Guys, some. I mean, obviously Christian's
- 1:12:27not a big body quarterback like Phil.
- 1:12:30Phil Phil's definitely like that.
- 1:12:32Ben Roethlisberger. Light type quarterback, big
- 1:12:35body, little wiggle, decent quickness.
- 1:12:39But he he has a big arm likes to take the shots down field, shows
- 1:12:44accuracy at at most of the levels of that those those shots
- 1:12:48are pretty accurate but they just haven't had the separation
- 1:12:51of the playmakers outside to to really take as much advantage of
- 1:12:54that this year and really been inefficient because of that and
- 1:12:59but he had settled in a little bit in that UNC game before he
- 1:13:03got the shit knocked out of him. All righty, Mike.
- 1:13:08Who you expecting to see Saturday night?
- 1:13:11I mean, based on that hit, I'm expecting to see Vayu, which I
- 1:13:15think would be good news for Virginia Tech, actually.
- 1:13:17Because if you could find a quarterback that has looked
- 1:13:19worse than Phil Jarkovic, it's Christian Vayu, at least in
- 1:13:22limited in a limited sample size, Jarkovic's been really
- 1:13:25bad. I don't know if it's his wrist
- 1:13:29from two years ago or what. He does not look right, you
- 1:13:32know, throwing the football. It just does not look like it
- 1:13:35did in 2020 when he kind of burst onto the scene for BCI
- 1:13:39don't know what happened, but he is just not even close to the
- 1:13:42same guy. So doesn't inspire a whole lot
- 1:13:45of confidence. You know, rolling him out there.
- 1:13:48Bayou just didn't look comfortable against North
- 1:13:50Carolina through the two picks. Very low completion percentage
- 1:13:54did not look good. I would expect to see Bayou.
- 1:13:57I haven't seen any sort of like practice reports or anything
- 1:13:59like that. So I don't know what your Kovic
- 1:14:01situation is, but I think either way, you know, if Pitt goes out
- 1:14:06and throws for a million yards in this game, it's an indictment
- 1:14:08on Virginia Tech's defense, right?
- 1:14:10We talked about the secondary and the fact that Tech hasn't.
- 1:14:12Tech hasn't been stopping the run, and that's why the past
- 1:14:14defense is ranked how it is. We all think there's talent, the
- 1:14:17secondary, no question about it. But you know, this is one of
- 1:14:20those games where pit's going to try to throw it a little bit
- 1:14:23here. And if they're completing passes
- 1:14:25deep down the field with these quarterbacks, with how they've
- 1:14:27looked so far, it's bad news. Big time, Big time.
- 1:14:32And you know talking more about the you, you know he struggled
- 1:14:35with that ball placement and decision making, not as
- 1:14:39efficient with the deep ball as as Jacobic was at his height.
- 1:14:43Really not, not even in that ballpark with what we've seen
- 1:14:46from him so far this year, which is significantly diminished.
- 1:14:49But I think from from Jacobic's standpoint, I think a lot of
- 1:14:52it's starting to get mental like he does not handle a pass rush
- 1:14:57very well anymore and I think. Between the injuries to the
- 1:15:01wrist, the injuries he had last year and getting really beat up
- 1:15:04behind that really pretty awful pass pro from that BC offensive
- 1:15:09line last year, he's he looks kind of shell shocked.
- 1:15:12So he just doesn't seem like the same type of quarterback.
- 1:15:16You know he showed some willingness to run early in the
- 1:15:20in that that second-half they really went away from the,
- 1:15:23especially after he put the ball on the ground with that that
- 1:15:26snap exchange. I'd say he's decent athleticism,
- 1:15:31probably a little more athletic kind of getting out of the
- 1:15:35pocket then maybe a Grant Wells but not the the kind of the top
- 1:15:38end that you would see from from a guy like drones kind of
- 1:15:41getting outside there. So he he will run, but he didn't
- 1:15:45run very much very effectively in in the second-half there
- 1:15:48after he had a couple couple decent attempts kind of start
- 1:15:51that that second-half off. Tell any questions you think you
- 1:15:54want to add about the quarterback situation up a pit
- 1:15:57we will see this weekend. We need to worry about who the
- 1:16:01running backs. All right.
- 1:16:04That's all I want to hear about. Here we go.
- 1:16:06He he what a great segue. Tally knows how to do this like
- 1:16:09he's been doing a few years. Professional, professional,
- 1:16:12professional and. You know, so, he said.
- 1:16:13Fucking quarterbacks. Let's hear the running backs.
- 1:16:16They worry. About yeah, Tally.
- 1:16:19What what did what did what did Mike say?
- 1:16:2158 1/2 yards a carry on 2 carries.
- 1:16:24We ain't worried about throwing the ball.
- 1:16:26Rodney Hammond Junior is the guy we want to worry about.
- 1:16:29A Virginia kid from Norfolk class in 20/21, he was an 87
- 1:16:33ranked guy. He was a top 15 player in the
- 1:16:36state on the composite top 2247 and you know his career he's
- 1:16:40been there, you know, for a couple years.
- 1:16:44He was sitting behind Izzy about a condo.
- 1:16:47That's the name I'll never forget in all my years.
- 1:16:50Had a little run last year. But Brian?
- 1:16:53Just me looking at it and looking at the data, they
- 1:16:56haven't really decided like if he's the guy because everybody
- 1:17:00on that back field is going to get a little bit of run.
- 1:17:03Yeah, everybody's been getting a little run.
- 1:17:04He's he's an interesting back. He's he shows pretty good vision
- 1:17:08between the tackles. I think the thing that probably
- 1:17:11stands out the most is that he's he's very much that type of back
- 1:17:14that's going to fight for those extra yards, especially for a
- 1:17:18guy his size hard to bring down. Not as explosive at the second
- 1:17:22level as we saw from Izzy last year, so in theory we shouldn't
- 1:17:27be giving up 300 yards rushing to to to a player this year.
- 1:17:32So in theory, but I will say Hammond is probably better out
- 1:17:37of the backfield catching the ball and making stuff happen in
- 1:17:40space than that Izzy was in on that regard.
- 1:17:43So look for him to catch a a few balls out of the backfield.
- 1:17:48He's done that a couple times this year.
- 1:17:50Remember looking at the tape last year, the West Virginia
- 1:17:53game where he had a big reception bill for a touchdown
- 1:17:56in that game. So he's got that capability, but
- 1:18:02it's just it's if we can get our run fits, we should be all
- 1:18:04right, which is I'm not very confident about.
- 1:18:08I'm not confident at all Mike Tally.
- 1:18:10I'll get anything from Brian here.
- 1:18:11Anything y'all want to add about Rodney Hammond or any of the
- 1:18:15running backs down at Pitt? He's a good player.
- 1:18:18Just tackle. Just tackle him.
- 1:18:20And that's the point. It's just tackling cuz we're
- 1:18:22hearing right there what Brian said.
- 1:18:24He's not the burner. Ali is a burner.
- 1:18:27You say what you wanna say, Racine.
- 1:18:29Holly is a burner. He gets upfield, he gets the
- 1:18:31gap, he can go. I'd be interested.
- 1:18:34Listen for Fleameister and Carter.
- 1:18:36Those are other two guys have been getting run in their
- 1:18:38backfield. They only trail Hammond by about
- 1:18:4217 carries. So if you do the math over four
- 1:18:44games, that's only about four different carries a game.
- 1:18:48And I know Hammond's biggest game came against you and see
- 1:18:51where you got 89 yards on about 15 carries.
- 1:18:55And they've historically been kind of a ride with the hot
- 1:18:58handed running back type team. You know, we saw that Hammond
- 1:19:02was kind of the hot, hot hand against.
- 1:19:05Yeah, some of the tape I watched last year with with with Pitt,
- 1:19:09they rode him a couple games. I know a Band of Canada was
- 1:19:11banged up one of those, but they they have a willingness to ride
- 1:19:16whatever is working in the running back game.
- 1:19:19So you know, if if it's working, they're going to keep that guy
- 1:19:23and unless he needs to come off for a blow all.
- 1:19:25Right, let's flip next and let's go to.
- 1:19:30Con Kanata mumfield boom nailed to Curtis.
- 1:19:34Yeah, really. Usually I screw those up
- 1:19:37completely. So you know a 6 foot, 175 pound
- 1:19:41wide out came to pit fight of the transfer portal I believe
- 1:19:48from Akron, right? They come from Akron, they came
- 1:19:51from Akron and so far this year leading the team 16 receptions.
- 1:19:57He only has 183 yards. Yep, it was Akron.
- 1:20:01Thank goodness I got that right. Got 500 yards last year over
- 1:20:05about right about 60 receptions. So he does look like he is
- 1:20:09there, sort of. Is he their number one Brian or
- 1:20:12is he just a part of the offense?
- 1:20:14He's their number one wide out, but they have, again, they
- 1:20:19haven't had a ton of success in the passing game so far this
- 1:20:22year. So he's kind of more of their
- 1:20:24stick mover, not really consistent deep threat.
- 1:20:28Again, they haven't really established that this year the
- 1:20:32way they have in the, you know, the years past when they've been
- 1:20:34a little bit of a better, a better passing team and he does
- 1:20:38most of his eating in that kind of short to intermediate range.
- 1:20:41They'll use them on screen slants occasionally see a dig
- 1:20:45here and there so that that's kind of his bread and butter.
- 1:20:48So he's mostly a guy that they're going to use to move the
- 1:20:49sticks. The next guy we're going to talk
- 1:20:51about is kind of the guy that they've taken most of the shots
- 1:20:53with this year. Who's that tally?
- 1:20:56So the next guy is there tied in Gavin Bartholomew.
- 1:21:00He was a three star, a three star athlete out of I'm not even
- 1:21:05going to try to say the name somewhere in PA class of 2021.
- 1:21:13One second here I had it pulled up.
- 1:21:17Like Brian said, they've been using him and kind of taking
- 1:21:21shots with him. He is right at about. 216 I
- 1:21:28believe on yardage this year, getting it pulled back up here,
- 1:21:33right? So he's he's on pace for
- 1:21:34somewhere around 700 yards receiving.
- 1:21:37Yeah he's a big big target at 65250.
- 1:21:43Big, big tight in he's yeah, 9 receptions, 260 yards having
- 1:21:48right at 24. Yeah, right, At 24 yard a catch
- 1:21:53and. Yeah, willfully.
- 1:21:55Yeah, one touchdown already. And again from last year, just,
- 1:22:01you know, going over his year to year.
- 1:22:04Last year he had 21 catches for 283 over the whole season and
- 1:22:13two touchdowns. And this year, he's already got
- 1:22:15216. Yeah, and some of that is the
- 1:22:18fact that the the wide receiver group has dropped off a little
- 1:22:21bit. Some of that is just he's
- 1:22:22developed into a better player. He's like a slightly bigger Kobe
- 1:22:27Flaner. I don't want to bring up Ghost
- 1:22:30of Bowl Games Pass, but kind of reminds me of that in terms of
- 1:22:35the way he plays and the way he likes to get up the scene.
- 1:22:37They use him a lot at the scene. They'll throw those kind of slot
- 1:22:41fades, deep crossers, tight in wheels, that that's really his
- 1:22:46bread and butter. That's where he's been getting a
- 1:22:47lot of that yardage. So definitely more of a big play
- 1:22:52threat than the typical stick move, stick mover, red zone
- 1:22:55threat that you see from your typical tight ends.
- 1:22:58And I'd say he's deceptively athletic that when you look at
- 1:23:00him on tape, he doesn't look like very unassuming in terms of
- 1:23:03his athleticism, but it kind of it, it jumps off the more you
- 1:23:06watch. Absolutely.
- 1:23:09All right, let's quickly hit their offensive line.
- 1:23:12And Mike, let me hit you with this before Brian breaks into
- 1:23:14it. It was announced yesterday all
- 1:23:17ACC tackle Matt Doncavas is out for the season.
- 1:23:20Killer hat. I mean, how big of a loss is
- 1:23:23that for Pitt right now? Big deal cuz they have a pretty
- 1:23:26good offensive line. It's a killer.
- 1:23:30You lose an all conference lineman at those.
- 1:23:32Those aren't easy to replace, right?
- 1:23:34I mean, we're talking about the Virginia Tech offensive line
- 1:23:36and. There's nobody, there's nobody
- 1:23:40sniffing that, right? So it's true.
- 1:23:42Yeah, it's it's an absolute killer and and Pitt does have a
- 1:23:45pretty decent offensive line. They've gotten better as the
- 1:23:48seasons gone along too. And you know, we could talk
- 1:23:51about the issues with Jacobic and everything else and and the
- 1:23:53run game issues. That has kind of been with him.
- 1:23:56It's kind of been fits and starts this year.
- 1:23:58But I chalk that up more to play calling than the actual
- 1:24:01offensive line. The offensive line is pretty
- 1:24:02solid. Yeah, that was my take away to
- 1:24:05looking at them. I mean, they're not elite.
- 1:24:07You know, Kyle was definitely the the most elite on that line.
- 1:24:10But it just as a unit, they're not really that elite, but very
- 1:24:12solid across the board. They do really well to get to
- 1:24:15the second level, which you know, doesn't really bode well
- 1:24:18for some of the problems we've had with run fits.
- 1:24:21If they're getting to the second level, getting on our
- 1:24:22linebackers, we're back to having a former wide receiver
- 1:24:27being the guy that's coming up to make that play that's going
- 1:24:29to stop a potential touchdown. So spooky hours a little bit
- 1:24:34there, but you know, definitely the guy was going out.
- 1:24:39That's going to be a big knock to them.
- 1:24:41We'll see how that impacts pass pro, we'll see how that, how
- 1:24:44that impacts their running game. So definitely a big loss.
- 1:24:47So we'll see if that that turns out to be something that, you
- 1:24:51know, rears its head in this game.
- 1:24:53Before we flip over to defense, Brian, what do you think it
- 1:24:55affects more with them? You watch some of the tape the
- 1:24:58last few days. I mean, because you're talking
- 1:25:01about them getting to the second level.
- 1:25:03I sit here and think, if you've got an elite left tackle, a lot
- 1:25:06of guys don't have to think right.
- 1:25:08Those interior guys don't have to think about anything.
- 1:25:10It's like he's got it. I don't need to worry about him
- 1:25:15and it makes it easy. I know you play with a really
- 1:25:17good left tackle at Sydney and I know for you it was just like,
- 1:25:20get the fuck up field. Yeah, I mean, Jared, Jared
- 1:25:24Stearns was locked down, so I didn't have to worry about him.
- 1:25:27But I'd say it hurts more on the pass pro, especially if you're
- 1:25:30rolling Christian out there instead of Phil because you're
- 1:25:35already having a quarterback that probably isn't fully
- 1:25:38comfortable in the pocket. It didn't show that in the game
- 1:25:43against you and C very uncomfortable with the pocket at
- 1:25:46times. So not having your all
- 1:25:49conference left tackle out there definitely doesn't inspire any
- 1:25:52any additional confidence. So I feel like that's going to
- 1:25:54be where the you'll see the impact the most, but it'll
- 1:25:56definitely impact the run game as well.
- 1:25:59All righty, all righty good deal.
- 1:26:01All right, we're going to flip over to the defensive side of
- 1:26:03the ball now and let's talk about this defense led by Randy
- 1:26:07Bates. Brian cuz I I read what you put
- 1:26:10in here and I'm, I'm sorry man. I I got I put my own little
- 1:26:16notes in there just to, like, make sure I talk the right
- 1:26:18amount of shit. Go ahead, say it.
- 1:26:24All right, so, so, so we got, we got Randy Bates.
- 1:26:27I mean, he's the coordinator, but obviously this is the Pat
- 1:26:32Narduzzi invented attacking 4 three defense.
- 1:26:38So something that all of us are familiar with.
- 1:26:41And obviously Pat Narduzzi is very excited that he was able to
- 1:26:45put something like this together for everyone.
- 1:26:48But they do love bringing the pressure to rush the
- 1:26:50quarterbacks and confuse the offensive line.
- 1:26:53You're going to see a lot of man and man outside.
- 1:26:57We're used to that. When we play pit it's going to
- 1:26:59be you're going to have to win those one-on-one battles if
- 1:27:01we're going to be successful in the passing game.
- 1:27:04They will give a big plays because of that aggressiveness,
- 1:27:08you know. So if we can catch them in a in
- 1:27:10a bad blitz, we can catch them in some mismatches and man
- 1:27:14coverage. We can take some advantage all.
- 1:27:17Right. Let's talk about some of the
- 1:27:18players on this defense. Let's talk with Day on Hayes.
- 1:27:22A6 foot three £265 defensive end top 200 play when he got
- 1:27:28recruited by 247 back in the class of 2020 out of Pittsburgh,
- 1:27:32PA out of Westinghouse and you know so far this season for Mr.
- 1:27:40Hayes. 8 tackles, two sides, 2 pass deflected.
- 1:27:45All he's looking past deflected and talk about it with defensive
- 1:27:47end, because that means they're not just here, they understand.
- 1:27:51You you see, it's about to fire. Just get your hand up.
- 1:27:54What you say say that again, Tally?
- 1:27:55Get them hands up. Get them up.
- 1:27:58So Brian when you when you took a look at him, what did you see
- 1:28:04and what can we do? And dear Lord is he going to be
- 1:28:07on seven knows side. I mean talent wise I mean he's a
- 1:28:11balanced the end and he is going to be on seven knows side most
- 1:28:14of the time unfortunately balanced the end.
- 1:28:17He's really good against the run good as a pass rusher so that's
- 1:28:21a really good edge doesn't get fooled often on kind of those
- 1:28:25backside contain rolls that you might see.
- 1:28:26So you know we ran we finally ran something we already ended
- 1:28:31around last week. I don't think he's going to be
- 1:28:33be fooled on that he's going to sit there read and be in the
- 1:28:36right position to make that play.
- 1:28:39They do something interesting with him though they like when
- 1:28:41they go nickel he kind of turns into a roaming linebacker
- 1:28:43depending on what the the defensive front call is.
- 1:28:46He'll kind of work in there standing in the backfield, blitz
- 1:28:51B gap, blitz A gap, sometimes blitz out around the edge.
- 1:28:54So they kind of use them a little bit differently there in
- 1:28:56those nickel sets. So that's really interesting to
- 1:28:58watch. And you know, in terms of tone
- 1:29:01setter, I mean he got out there and forced to fumble early
- 1:29:04against you and see the kind of set the tone for that team and
- 1:29:07you know, put them in contention in the first, first half before
- 1:29:10Phil went down and you and see kind of ran away with that the
- 1:29:13second-half. All right, good deal there.
- 1:29:21Obviously if there is a change this week on that side, it would
- 1:29:25be interesting to see because it does sound like it would be a
- 1:29:28good test if there was a new offensive lineman out there.
- 1:29:31I want to talk about one of the linebackers next prime that
- 1:29:34caught my eye on the stat sheet along with who he is and that is
- 1:29:39Solomon Deshields, 6 foot tall, £230 linebacker.
- 1:29:46Out of Millville, NJ was a mid three star when he came out back
- 1:29:52in the class of 2020 and so far this year 21 tackles, 3 tackles
- 1:29:58for loss in a sack. Where are we seeing him line up?
- 1:30:01You know they they obviously have lost some linebackers the
- 1:30:04last few years. Who's he wrote.
- 1:30:06What's he effectively doing there?
- 1:30:08Yeah, he's their outside linebacker essentially the will
- 1:30:12in this, in this type of defense.
- 1:30:15He's a he's a he's their blitz specialist.
- 1:30:17He's the guy that they're bringing on a lot of those blitz
- 1:30:19calls really good and pursuit attacks the gap really well,
- 1:30:25unlike some of our our linebackers that we've seen this
- 1:30:29year so far. So he does a pretty good job
- 1:30:32there. Good and run fit
- 1:30:33responsibilities. Where he can get lost is when he
- 1:30:37asked to cover in the passing game, especially in zone.
- 1:30:40Not very good there. So usually that's why you see
- 1:30:43him on passing down. They're trying to bring him as
- 1:30:45that fifth or sixth guy coming off the edge on the pass rush.
- 1:30:51All righty. Good deal.
- 1:30:53There Again, it's one of those things we're gonna talk about in
- 1:30:57Keys in a little while here. What do we do against this team?
- 1:31:00What do we do against this team and you hear somebody like him
- 1:31:02struggling in coverage, is do we have to mix it up with the past?
- 1:31:05But Tally, we got one more guy we want to talk about, someone
- 1:31:09I'm sure is familiar to everybody.
- 1:31:13Or of us sick? Obviously should be near and
- 1:31:15dear to a lot of hokey fans. Donovan McMillan, He came out of
- 1:31:22high school, went to Florida. A lot of hokey fans, for some
- 1:31:26reason, thought we were close to getting him.
- 1:31:30Then he goes to Florida, doesn't work out there and guess what?
- 1:31:33He transfers. A lot of hokey fans went down
- 1:31:35that road again and thought we were going to get him when he
- 1:31:37transferred from Florida. No, he didn't.
- 1:31:41He transferred to Pitt. He is a PA kid.
- 1:31:43He's from there. He was a four-star guy coming
- 1:31:48out of high school. Offers from all over.
- 1:31:51You know Georgia list goes to Florida, list goes on and on of
- 1:31:57all the people that wanted this kid.
- 1:31:59Very talented, says This year he's got about 32 tackles.
- 1:32:04What I thought was interesting, I mean he's 6 to 210, so a
- 1:32:09bigger safety. What I what I thought was
- 1:32:12interesting was in that West Virginia game he had 18 tackles,
- 1:32:189 solo and 9 assisted. So the reason I say I find that
- 1:32:25interesting is. Are they getting to that second
- 1:32:28level? Is he coming downhill?
- 1:32:31How is he getting in on all these tackles, Brian?
- 1:32:35Yeah, man. Let's start by saying, you know,
- 1:32:38DMC is the one that got away, man.
- 1:32:41He's the one that got away. I feel like we've all been
- 1:32:45chatting. I think when he was getting
- 1:32:47recruited in, he was one of those infamous silent commits
- 1:32:54that didn't quite turn out the way we wanted it to.
- 1:32:59And you know, I had dreams of dropping DeLorean means every
- 1:33:03time this kid made a big play and I didn't get to do that.
- 1:33:07So I'm very disappointed. But really good player, man,
- 1:33:10Great in pursuit, covers ground really fast.
- 1:33:14They use them a lot as kind of that middle third in the single
- 1:33:17high, kind of the half field safety in their primary
- 1:33:20coverages. So there's a lot of Cover 3,
- 1:33:23Cover one, Cover 6. So he kind of plays that role
- 1:33:25for them in those and those coverages and I'd say he's
- 1:33:29better against the run, but he's still very active, sorry, better
- 1:33:33against the past, but he's still active in run support.
- 1:33:36So just a solid all around player and really I'd say elite
- 1:33:43in kind of playing that deep third coverage.
- 1:33:47All righty. So.
- 1:33:48Brian, let's ask this like Tally was talking about here before we
- 1:33:51get to hokey keys. Is it downhill?
- 1:33:54Is that where he's making his tackles or is he coming up in
- 1:33:57the box? Or is he just, is he all over
- 1:33:59the place or they let him free roam especially so thinking
- 1:34:02about you know what West Virginia does, you know they
- 1:34:05he's coming up and making a lot of plays in those passes and in
- 1:34:08the run game. So it's more in the passing game
- 1:34:10that shot a quick passing game, he's coming up and making those
- 1:34:13plays there. So that that's why you're seeing
- 1:34:15a little bit more volume pick up against a team like that.
- 1:34:20I am very sorry, Brian. We are over here chuckling.
- 1:34:22You can take a look at the private chat now because we we,
- 1:34:25we were reminiscing back from three years ago in 2020 with
- 1:34:29with with DMC there. All right, all right.
- 1:34:33So that is pit lot of players you should know.
- 1:34:36Obviously we can't cover them all, but we're going to get to
- 1:34:39the Hokie keys now. As always, we have 4 Hokie keys.
- 1:34:42I'm going to let our guest, Mike McDaniel lead us with the key.
- 1:34:46He felt most important this week.
- 1:34:49Let drones cook in the running game.
- 1:34:52Let him cook I. Agree.
- 1:34:56It does not have to be. I've mentioned this earlier
- 1:34:58tonight. Does not have to be difficult.
- 1:35:00If he's running the ball well, downhill, let him run the ball.
- 1:35:03All right. I I understand.
- 1:35:05We don't want drones to run 2530 * a game.
- 1:35:09Totally get that right. I think he ran it 2223 times
- 1:35:12against Rutgers. Probably a little too many,
- 1:35:15right? If you get him in that. 13 to 17
- 1:35:20range, right where last week. I think that's his sweet spot.
- 1:35:25But a lot of those came later in the game, right?
- 1:35:29Real good early on. Went away from it, came back to
- 1:35:32it off and saw some success. Let him run the ball, let him
- 1:35:36get comfortable, set up the passing game.
- 1:35:39Doesn't have to be hard. All righty.
- 1:35:42There we go. Let let drones cook.
- 1:35:44I tally. What's yours this week, man?
- 1:35:47I'm gonna, I'm gonna get. Jump on what he's saying as
- 1:35:49well. Whatever's working on offense,
- 1:35:52stick with it. I mean, don't overthink it.
- 1:35:56Whatever's working, keep doing it.
- 1:35:58If Drones is killing him with his legs, let him kill him.
- 1:36:02If we're throwing short passes and we we're thinking and
- 1:36:05dunking down the field, let's keep doing it.
- 1:36:09You know, let's not just say, OK, we did this, that worked.
- 1:36:13Let's see if this will work. No, we ain't got time for that.
- 1:36:16Continue doing what works offense.
- 1:36:19There you go. There you go, Sigla.
- 1:36:21What's yours, man? Yeah, I mean, I don't want to
- 1:36:25beat a dead horse here, but live at those explosive run planes,
- 1:36:28man. I mean that.
- 1:36:30That's what we got to do. We got, we got to have the
- 1:36:32safety's coming up in the right fits of the run game.
- 1:36:34We got to get more tackles for loss from our defensive line so
- 1:36:38we can put them in down in distances that hurt them.
- 1:36:43So they can't gash us in the run game on 3rd down and get those
- 1:36:47big runs that not only move the sticks but also we're putting
- 1:36:50them in scoring range or they're putting points on the board if
- 1:36:53they're not already scoring on the run anyway.
- 1:36:55So that that's what we got to do if if we can limit the explosive
- 1:36:58plays in the run game. I think we're we're what we're
- 1:37:01showing is that we have the ability we're not consistent.
- 1:37:07We aren't doing, we aren't doing the right things all the time.
- 1:37:11Yep, we're not doing the right things all the time.
- 1:37:14All right, I'm going to throw this one out for y'all because
- 1:37:16of of kind of what Pitt is. Pitt roughly ranks in the
- 1:37:23atmosphere of NCAA college football.
- 1:37:26They are directly in the middle when it comes to from 33rd
- 1:37:29downs. They're about 41%.
- 1:37:32And I'm going to be honest, if we can kick them to 41 percent
- 1:37:36or less, that's going to be a key get them off the field.
- 1:37:40Every two or five times there's a third down or three of out of
- 1:37:44five times you're going to win this game doing that.
- 1:37:46If we let it become like it did last week, where early Marshall
- 1:37:51went like five or seven, they came back to Earth in the
- 1:37:54second-half, but they didn't need it in the second-half.
- 1:37:57They didn't need it in the second-half.
- 1:37:59Y'all are cracking me up too. Seeing all the sorry, sorry,
- 1:38:02y'all, don't know. We we've we've all been in,
- 1:38:05we've all been together for close to four years now.
- 1:38:08So there's a lot of stories in this chat, so.
- 1:38:10Me. Get them off the field on 3rd
- 1:38:12down. Stick them to their average.
- 1:38:13We'll put it below. If it starts creeping above,
- 1:38:15we're going to be in trouble. All right, so now we've got our
- 1:38:18prediction and our big screeners.
- 1:38:20Mike, you'll get to pick the big screeners too.
- 1:38:22You can just have some fun because you know you never make
- 1:38:24picks, but you never make picks. Big streamer segment is
- 1:38:29presented by prize picks. Prize 6 is a daily fantasy app
- 1:38:34where you can make entries based on players projected outcomes
- 1:38:37this week. Thursday night, my first one.
- 1:38:39Sam Laporta, The young rookie tied in with Detroit.
- 1:38:44It's at 42 1/2 receiving yards. Take the over.
- 1:38:48He has been lighting it up. Green Bay at Derek Card doesn't
- 1:38:52go out Sunday. They do not win that game.
- 1:38:55My second one because he's on my fantasy team and he needs a
- 1:38:58touchdown this week and he's playing one of the worst teams
- 1:39:00in the league. Justin Jefferson is a touchdown
- 1:39:03or no touchdown. He is going to score a touchdown
- 1:39:05this week. Remember, prize picks will match
- 1:39:09any deposit up to $100. When you sign up with our code
- 1:39:12BC picks, that's BCPICKS. Or use that QR code.
- 1:39:18If you're watching us on YouTube tonight, click it right there.
- 1:39:21It'll take you right to it. Or the boundary corner page back
- 1:39:25slash BC picks. All righty, we'll start with our
- 1:39:29hokey predictions first. Mike again.
- 1:39:32You're the guest. What are you feeling on the game
- 1:39:34Saturday? It's about time that a Brent
- 1:39:42Pride coach team steps up and just figures it out.
- 1:39:47We can all agree. Please.
- 1:39:51I think it happens on Saturday night.
- 1:39:54I can't believe I'm saying this. I think it happened Saturday
- 1:39:58night. What's informing me of this?
- 1:40:01The spread makes no sense at all.
- 1:40:04The pit. This pit team.
- 1:40:06Listen, listen. This pit team is not very good.
- 1:40:10It's better than Virginia Tech, right?
- 1:40:12Why is Pitt only a 2 1/2 point favorite?
- 1:40:15And don't tell me it's because they think Christian Bayou's
- 1:40:17going to start a quarterback. This thing opened at 4:00.
- 1:40:21What makes makes zero sense. Pitt has had a lovehate
- 1:40:27relationship with going to Lane Stadium and for some reason ACC
- 1:40:34Network decide this is going to be a primetime game on Saturday
- 1:40:36night. Give me the Hokies outright 1716
- 1:40:42Virginia Tech. A very ugly, low scoring,
- 1:40:46disgusting, gross game spread makes no sense.
- 1:40:49Give me the Hokies on a rock. Fight alrighty.
- 1:40:53Let's see if we're as optimistic as Mr. McDaniel is down here.
- 1:40:59Tally, who you got? Yeah man, Mike made some great
- 1:41:02points. You know, like he said, the
- 1:41:03spread makes no sense. I was looking at it.
- 1:41:07I'm like, man, that's that's kind of crazy.
- 1:41:09So guess what I did? I picked pit because our
- 1:41:15coaching staff is not making no sense.
- 1:41:18Pit to the wind pits going to cover 2417 pit.
- 1:41:25I mean, it's already up there. I got Pitt too.
- 1:41:28I'm going. I'm going to cover, too.
- 1:41:29I got 2720 Pitt. I I can't trust our run defense
- 1:41:37to not allow big plays yet. And I still need to see the
- 1:41:42offense put four quarters together.
- 1:41:45And I'm at a point now in this season where, until I see it
- 1:41:49actually happen, I have a hard time picking Virginia Tech.
- 1:41:52So Pitt. All right.
- 1:41:54Did you get Sheldon's? Yeah.
- 1:41:57What's he? He's also saying that I don't
- 1:42:00think we got the score from him. But he said Fitz winning the
- 1:42:02game. I'm I'm I'm sorry we're going
- 1:42:06all against you. Mike here.
- 1:42:07But I'm with them. I'm fading the Hokies until I
- 1:42:10see a lot more out of them. I do think it's going to be
- 1:42:12ugly. I'm.
- 1:42:13I'm with you. I'm not as high scoring as these
- 1:42:15two guys are. I think the Hokies cover, but I
- 1:42:18think they lose a heartbreaker 2120.
- 1:42:20I'm not even like an optimist and for some reason I just have
- 1:42:23a feeling about this for some reason so.
- 1:42:25We hope you're right it. Might be Daniel.
- 1:42:28Gut feeling. I got to see if that plays out,
- 1:42:31man. It's gone for and against me, so
- 1:42:33we'll see. It is what?
- 1:42:35Curtis Curtis, you said you think the score is going to be
- 1:42:372120. 2120. So you think the Hulkies cover?
- 1:42:41I think they can cover, but we're still going to lose.
- 1:42:44It's going to be all some screwed up ass play, probably
- 1:42:47knowing our luck, just the way everything's going this year.
- 1:42:51All righty, We got more big screeners because, you know,
- 1:42:54we're at a point in our lives. We can curse and be mad at our
- 1:42:57team and throw shit after the game, but we can still watch
- 1:42:59other games. I did last week, Had had some
- 1:43:03Scotch, had some Scotch after the game.
- 1:43:06So let's start with the first one here.
- 1:43:07Tally, you leading us off Tally's?
- 1:43:10He's definitely watching USC Colorado.
- 1:43:13I think that's a high noon kick. Oh yeah, I talked a little bit
- 1:43:16about it earlier, man. These people smell blood in the
- 1:43:20water. Dion, you better get your team
- 1:43:23right because Caleb Williams is coming in there and he's
- 1:43:26definitely going to cover and they might score 60 points.
- 1:43:30It's my opinion that that Colorado offensive line has not
- 1:43:35been good. Everything that Shador Sanders
- 1:43:38has done, it's kind of been him making plays in my opinion.
- 1:43:42I think that are most sacked team or one of the most sacked
- 1:43:45team in the nation. Which is crazy because they're
- 1:43:49higher than us. But again, no knock on Colorado.
- 1:43:53They are building a team, but I think USC is going to smoke
- 1:43:56them. All right.
- 1:43:59Brian, what you got? I'm taking the Trojans in this
- 1:44:03one too. What I saw against Oregon
- 1:44:08against a competent rush that also has a back end that can
- 1:44:12cover. Was not very pretty.
- 1:44:16I think we're going to see a little bit more of that.
- 1:44:18I don't think it's quite as lopsided as that Oregon contest,
- 1:44:22but I think it definitely covers that 21 1/2.
- 1:44:25So give me the Trojans. All righty, go ahead, throw
- 1:44:28Shelton's up there because me and Shelton are on the same
- 1:44:32page. Colorado is not going to win
- 1:44:34this game, but they're going to cover y'all.
- 1:44:36It's Lincoln Rally. His teams don't play defense.
- 1:44:39They eventually going to get in the shootout, by the way.
- 1:44:42It's 73 1/2 over under over. Oh my God.
- 1:44:46Over. Oh my God over.
- 1:44:48This game's going to be like, Tally, you ain't wrong.
- 1:44:50I think UFC gets to 60, but I think, I think Deon ain't far
- 1:44:55behind it. Like 45.
- 1:44:58The game's hit 100. Yeah.
- 1:44:59You got any picks on this one, Mike?
- 1:45:01I like Colorado to cover because of exactly what you just said,
- 1:45:04Curtis, the the USC defense man. If if Lincoln Riley ever fires
- 1:45:10Alex Grinch, who gets a real defensive coordinator, US, he's
- 1:45:12going to be cooking with some guys, I think.
- 1:45:15We'll see. I think it's just a Lincoln
- 1:45:17thing. I think.
- 1:45:17I don't think you know what, I don't think Lincoln Riley knows
- 1:45:19how to do y'all what. I don't think he knows.
- 1:45:22I play complimentary football. He just wants.
- 1:45:24To all the time. What makes you say that?
- 1:45:29Wherever he's been, he has some of the most impressive defensive
- 1:45:31talent and he cannot stop anyone.
- 1:45:34Hey, hey, we need a 6 minute drive here.
- 1:45:36We're up two touchdowns. I'm going to try scoring 3
- 1:45:38seconds exactly. I'm going to go to my game next
- 1:45:44Friday night. Two teams the Hokies will see,
- 1:45:47which are NC State and Louisville.
- 1:45:50This game is down at Carter Finley Stadium on Friday night
- 1:45:55and we got a home dog here. We got a home dog.
- 1:46:01And I think this is going to be a fight.
- 1:46:03I think this is going to be the best Louisville, the best
- 1:46:05defense Louisville has seen all year.
- 1:46:07I think Louisville has flaws on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:46:11We saw that against Georgia Tech.
- 1:46:12When you give a 28 points to that dreadful Georgia Tech
- 1:46:15offense, it says a lot about you.
- 1:46:17So give me NC State. I think NC State takes the win
- 1:46:20and the cover tally. Oh, tally.
- 1:46:25OK. Yeah, I think, I think you,
- 1:46:29North Carolina State. We'll win and cover here as
- 1:46:32well. A linebacker, man.
- 1:46:35He's something else. Another another one that we
- 1:46:38almost got him. Peyton, Peyton.
- 1:46:40Luke, Peyton Willis. Wilson.
- 1:46:43Peyton Wilson. Another almost, man.
- 1:46:45We almost got him like that dude is a baller.
- 1:46:48I think that they play some defense in and go in and win
- 1:46:52this. What we got there with Brian?
- 1:46:58I got the Wolf Pack pulling this one out too.
- 1:47:00I just think. It's gonna be enough defense to
- 1:47:03slow down some of what Louis was doing offensively, and I think
- 1:47:05they'll be able to pull it out. NC State, always solid defense.
- 1:47:11Defense is going to win you that game, I think.
- 1:47:15All right, so Sheldon's up there.
- 1:47:17He's going. Louisville faded us.
- 1:47:19He faded us. Mike, are you famous?
- 1:47:21Are you with us? No.
- 1:47:22NC stayed out. Right Defense.
- 1:47:24This is the first good, like real good defense.
- 1:47:26Louisville's play. Yep.
- 1:47:28And we already seen Louisville's offensive flaws, so he's going
- 1:47:31with us. And we already said that, you
- 1:47:33know, Louisville is playing probably the easiest schedule of
- 1:47:36any ACC team this year. So up to this point, yeah, it is
- 1:47:40so. It's so bad, all right?
- 1:47:43By the way, one team that kind of has not played an ass
- 1:47:46schedule is due. They've knocked off Clemson.
- 1:47:49Now they get a chance to take on the Golden Domers in Bryan's.
- 1:47:54Big Screener of the week. It'll probably be on his 52 inch
- 1:47:58point point. Which one?
- 1:47:59Which one's he going to be on this?
- 1:48:01That one right there. I got, I got the 50 fiver here,
- 1:48:04I got another 52 are up here, so it'll be on the 50 fiver. 5 1/2
- 1:48:10point line. He says Duke, I'm going with
- 1:48:13Duke. I I mean, I don't think, I'm not
- 1:48:15sure that Duke wins this out, right?
- 1:48:17But I think this is a field goal.
- 1:48:21Last minute taking the lead game type of situation for Notre
- 1:48:26Dame. I think this is going to come
- 1:48:27down to the wire and it's either going to be a a field goal late
- 1:48:31to break a tie or a touchdown late to to take the lead back
- 1:48:34from Duke. Alright, I'm gonna be nice.
- 1:48:36Mike will throw yours. What do you got on this one?
- 1:48:38I am I man. I want no part of this one.
- 1:48:41Notre Dame in a let down spot after we saw what happened last
- 1:48:44year, right? Notre Dame lost to Ohio State
- 1:48:46and bit him in the ass the following week.
- 1:48:48Marshall. Yeah.
- 1:48:50Mike says he's not. Are you making a prediction or
- 1:48:52you just throwing this one off your board?
- 1:48:54Notre Dame. OK, Notre Dame, they're they're,
- 1:48:57I mean, they're just, they're better.
- 1:48:58I'm just gonna go with Notre Dame here.
- 1:49:00Tally, Tally, Tally. I'm going with Notre Dame and
- 1:49:03the only reason that I'm going with Notre Dame is because I
- 1:49:06wanted to go Duke. But I have been horrible at
- 1:49:09picking, if you go back and look over the weeks, so I just went
- 1:49:12with the opposite team I was gonna pick.
- 1:49:15Well, I feel in my gut I'm going the opposite.
- 1:49:17Way I'm going the opposite way because.
- 1:49:18My gut ain't treating me nice. Lately, Sally said.
- 1:49:20He's fading himself. Exactly.
- 1:49:25Who Sheldon got on this, and I'm with.
- 1:49:29I'm with everybody else. Brian, give me Notre Dame 5 1/2,
- 1:49:32and it's not so much that I don't think Duke's a good team.
- 1:49:36But yeah, we saw a Clifton game. Clemson should have probably
- 1:49:39beat them by 14 points. You turned the ball that many
- 1:49:42times over inside your 10 yard line.
- 1:49:45You're going to lose. I don't thought Nader name gets
- 1:49:47that Mike you put a good point they are in a bad let down spot.
- 1:49:51But the way that game I mean even a worse let down spot
- 1:49:53because legitimately 10 off 10 defensive players missing a
- 1:49:59defensive lineman exactly where Ohio State ran that ball on
- 1:50:04literally the last play of the game.
- 1:50:06But I think they bounced back by the way game day is in Duke and
- 1:50:10now game day the only spot they have not been is what UVA.
- 1:50:15It's like 2 spots now. Like it's every A/C school, but
- 1:50:18UVA now has gotten a visit from game day after the day.
- 1:50:23Alrighty. Another I think this is going to
- 1:50:25be this might be the funnest game of the weekend.
- 1:50:29Kansas, Texas, Texas is a 17 point favorite.
- 1:50:36Mike, we're going to let you leave this one, man.
- 1:50:38What do you think with this crazy game which I think is this
- 1:50:41in? Make sure here.
- 1:50:44This is in Austin, this is at Royal Texas.
- 1:50:49This is a this is when you're 5 stars.
- 1:50:52Just pull away. Kansas is very well coached, but
- 1:50:55there comes a point in time where you're not going to be
- 1:50:58able to defend Texas for four quarters.
- 1:51:00Give me. I mean Texas has been really
- 1:51:01impressive. So and Kansas is a good team.
- 1:51:04They're four and oh, they're a good team like Texas.
- 1:51:06They should have the attention of this Texas team.
- 1:51:10All right, What's Shelton got on this?
- 1:51:12This is the one he wanted to pick.
- 1:51:13He's going Texas. He's with you, Mike Talley.
- 1:51:16I'm going to go Kansas. I'm going to go Kansas for the
- 1:51:20same reason that I went Notre Dame, because I seen Texas.
- 1:51:23I thought Texas. I think I was the only one that
- 1:51:25picked Texas against Alabama. I thought Texas, you were a
- 1:51:28great team. I thought they were going to go
- 1:51:30in and win. I think they're going to win
- 1:51:31this game. Hell, they're probably going to
- 1:51:32cover. That's what my mind says.
- 1:51:34So I said fuck it, let's go to Kansas.
- 1:51:37The opposite bets of every of Jonathan Talley this week.
- 1:51:41Listen, I'm going to Kansas here.
- 1:51:45One reason y'all know what's next weekend?
- 1:51:48What? Let's go to the Texas State
- 1:51:50Fair. It's the Red River Shootout
- 1:51:52Oklahoma last time in the Big 12.
- 1:51:54I think they overlook Kansas a little bit where this is a
- 1:51:57tighter game. Mike, you're right.
- 1:51:59Five stars prevail in the end by like 10 to 13.
- 1:52:03But I think Kansas can cover and I think this is going to be an
- 1:52:05entertaining, high scoring game. Yeah, that's fine, Ron.
- 1:52:12I'm going K U2. Kansas is going to have a back
- 1:52:15door cover there at the end. What's the score then?
- 1:52:22Give me, give me like 4228. I got you.
- 1:52:28I got you. That makes sense.
- 1:52:29That makes sense. All right.
- 1:52:31Next game, Last game. This is none of ours, but we
- 1:52:35just always choose one extra game.
- 1:52:37Friday night, 9:00, Utah. Oregon State in Corvallis, Utah.
- 1:52:43The hottest team in the PAC 12. By the way, this will not be a
- 1:52:46high scoring game. This will be a lot of hitting.
- 1:52:511716 There's Mike right there. 1716 Who?
- 1:52:561716, Oregon State. Utah's quarterback issues
- 1:53:01finally kept. I want to call them issues.
- 1:53:03They've They've won every game they played.
- 1:53:05The the the quarterback situation finally catches up to
- 1:53:08Utah. Alrighty, they cover though they
- 1:53:11cover prime. I've got Oregon State here.
- 1:53:17I think this is going to be, as Mike said, a game where the
- 1:53:23quarterback catches up with them.
- 1:53:24I think that. Oregon State can generate just
- 1:53:28enough offense against that really good Utah defense to kind
- 1:53:32of stretch out that that 3 1/2 to about 6 points.
- 1:53:37All righty. I'm next on this one.
- 1:53:41I'm next on this one. I'm going to go Utah.
- 1:53:44I like Utah. I think Utah's the better team
- 1:53:46regardless of quarterback situation.
- 1:53:48We don't know. It seemed like that, you know,
- 1:53:53cameras. And it's close to coming back.
- 1:53:55If the game was Saturday, he probably he is a chance he
- 1:53:59probably would be back this week but I think Utah grinds it out.
- 1:54:02I think Mike, you're not far off on that 1716 score.
- 1:54:06Stay up till midnight Friday night gets 2TV's going state.
- 1:54:11Put the other one on. Brian will have his Braves on
- 1:54:13the TV as well on Friday night watching these sipping a little
- 1:54:16drink. Tally, who you got?
- 1:54:19I got Utah winning, man. I think Utah's just.
- 1:54:21I would take them straight up money, line, close game.
