- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine seventy two. Today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Exodus with Exodus chapter twelve. Welcome to the Bible
- 0:23Speaker 1: Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to
- 0:26Speaker 1: continue on with the Passover today, but first a word
- 0:30Speaker 1: from this sponsor. Exodus twelve, the Passover and the festival
- 0:35Speaker 1: of unleavened Bread. So remember where we left this is
- 0:40Speaker 1: Moses has already warned Pharaoh that there's going to be
- 0:44Speaker 1: the plague of the firstborn, that the firstborn of Egypt,
- 0:47Speaker 1: of the people in the livestock, will die, from Pharaoh
- 0:50Speaker 1: all the way down to the servant maid. This is
- 0:53Speaker 1: what will protect the people of Israel, the Lord said
- 0:57Speaker 1: to Moses and Aaron in Egypt. This month is to
- 1:00Speaker 1: be for you, the first month, the first month of
- 1:02Speaker 1: your year. Tell the whole community of Israel that on
- 1:05Speaker 1: the tenth day of this month, each man is to
- 1:08Speaker 1: take a lamb for his family, one for each household.
- 1:12Speaker 1: If any household is too small for a whole lamb,
- 1:15Speaker 1: they must share one with their nearest neighbor. Having taken
- 1:18Speaker 1: into account the number of people there are, you are
- 1:21Speaker 1: to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with
- 1:24Speaker 1: what each person will eat. The animals you choose must
- 1:28Speaker 1: be year old males without defect, and you may take
- 1:32Speaker 1: them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of
- 1:35Speaker 1: them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all
- 1:38Speaker 1: the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them.
- 1:41Speaker 1: At twilight. They are to take some of the blood
- 1:44Speaker 1: and put it on the sides and tops of the
- 1:46Speaker 1: door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs.
- 1:50Speaker 1: That same night, they are to eat the meat roasted
- 1:53Speaker 1: over the fire, along with bitter herbs and bread made
- 1:56Speaker 1: without yeast. Do not eat the meat raw or boiled water,
- 2:00Speaker 1: but roast it over a fire with the head, legs
- 2:03Speaker 1: and internal organs. Do not leave any of it till morning.
- 2:06Speaker 1: If some is left till morning, you must burn it.
- 2:09Speaker 1: This is how you are to eat it, with your
- 2:11Speaker 1: cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It is the Lord's passover. On that same night, I
- 2:22Speaker 1: will pass through Egypt and strike down every first born
- 2:25Speaker 1: of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment
- 2:28Speaker 1: on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The blood will be a sign for you on the
- 2:33Speaker 1: houses where you are. And when I see the blood,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch
- 2:40Speaker 1: you when I strike Egypt. So there's two different things
- 2:44Speaker 1: that are going on here. That one historically here is
- 2:48Speaker 1: that God is about to do this plague, and he's
- 2:50Speaker 1: told the people of Israel that you need to kill
- 2:54Speaker 1: a lamb and put its blood over your lintel, over
- 2:57Speaker 1: your doorframe, and that that will be the sign for
- 3:01Speaker 1: this angel of the Lord not to kill the firstborn
- 3:05Speaker 1: in this household. And there are specific instructions here that
- 3:09Speaker 1: we're supposed to roast it. It can be a lamb,
- 3:11Speaker 1: or it could be a goat. You know, it has
- 3:13Speaker 1: to be a year old, it has to be without defect.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Can't be some lamb that's on its last legs. And
- 3:19Speaker 1: then you're also supposed to eat all of it, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: you eat it in haste. And then you may have
- 3:26Speaker 1: heard this weedy with the bitter herbs and the bread
- 3:29Speaker 1: mat without yeast. If you have a friend who is
- 3:31Speaker 1: Jewish and you can get invited to a sator, or
- 3:34Speaker 1: if your church does a sator, you will see these
- 3:37Speaker 1: elements in that passover meal that is still celebrated to
- 3:41Speaker 1: this day, where you eat it with the bitter herbs
- 3:44Speaker 1: to remember your slavery in Egypt, to the tears that
- 3:47Speaker 1: were shed, and you eat it with the different things
- 3:50Speaker 1: that are going on in that meal. But the other
- 3:52Speaker 1: thing historically here is they're supposed to eat it dressed
- 3:55Speaker 1: and ready to go. Right. That's the cloak is tucked
- 3:58Speaker 1: in your belt, your sandals on your feet, your staff
- 4:00Speaker 1: in your hand. You're ready to go. God is doing
- 4:04Speaker 1: this passover to deliver you from Egypt. Be ready. Now.
- 4:10Speaker 1: The other thing that we as Christians see in this
- 4:15Speaker 1: is a foretaste of the role of Jesus. With Jesus' sacrifice,
- 4:23Speaker 1: we call Jesus sometimes the lamb of God. That's what
- 4:25Speaker 1: John the Baptist called him in particular. That was the
- 4:28Speaker 1: first one to use that phrase, meaning the lamb that
- 4:32Speaker 1: was sacrificed for us. And that when God looks at
- 4:37Speaker 1: the blood of Jesus when we're baptized, we're baptized into
- 4:40Speaker 1: his crucifixion, that when God looks at us, he sees
- 4:44Speaker 1: the blood of Jesus and doesn't take account our sins
- 4:48Speaker 1: but credits those to Jesus' account, that Jesus took care
- 4:53Speaker 1: of those with the blood that was shed. And so
- 4:56Speaker 1: that's one of the reasons why we study this whole
- 4:58Speaker 1: book of Exodus, is that we see in the Tabernacle,
- 5:02Speaker 1: we see in the passover lamb, little taste, little things
- 5:07Speaker 1: that give us a clue for our own faith. Continuing on,
- 5:13Speaker 1: this is a day you are to commemorate for the
- 5:14Speaker 1: generations to come. You shall celebrate it as a festival
- 5:17Speaker 1: to the Lord, a lasting ordinance. For seven days, you
- 5:21Speaker 1: are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day,
- 5:24Speaker 1: remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything
- 5:27Speaker 1: with yeast in it from the first day through the
- 5:31Speaker 1: seventh must be cut off from Israel. On the first
- 5:34Speaker 1: day whole day's sacred assembly, and another on the seventh day.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Do not work at all on these days except to
- 5:41Speaker 1: prepare food for everyone to eat. That is all you
- 5:44Speaker 1: may do. Celebrate the festival of unloved Bread because it
- 5:48Speaker 1: was on this day that I brought your divisions out
- 5:51Speaker 1: of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for
- 5:54Speaker 1: the generations to come. In the first month, you are
- 5:58Speaker 1: to eat bread made without yeast from the evening of
- 6:01Speaker 1: the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty first day,
- 6:04Speaker 1: for seven days, no yeast is to be found in
- 6:07Speaker 1: your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native born, who
- 6:12Speaker 1: eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off
- 6:14Speaker 1: from the community of Israel. Eat nothing made with yeast.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread. So these
- 6:22Speaker 1: two sections here, these two paragraphs, look forward from this
- 6:27Speaker 1: time in Egypt to how this will be celebrated in
- 6:31Speaker 1: the future every year. And if we look at the
- 6:35Speaker 1: history of Israel, Israel in the time of the kings
- 6:38Speaker 1: is very does not do a good job of remembering
- 6:41Speaker 1: this and celebrating it every year. But the Jewish people
- 6:45Speaker 1: since the time of the Babylonian captivity have been very
- 6:50Speaker 1: good about celebrating it to this day, and they still
- 6:54Speaker 1: do the feast of the unlovend bread, where they they
- 6:56Speaker 1: look through the house for leaven and eat the unloved
- 7:00Speaker 1: bread or mats is the thing that you'll see in stores.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But all of this is going back to these instructions. Here.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and
- 7:12Speaker 1: your descendants when you enter the land, that the Lord
- 7:15Speaker 1: will give you as he promised. Observe this ceremony. And
- 7:19Speaker 1: when your children ask you, what does this ceremony mean
- 7:21Speaker 1: to you, then tell them it is the Passover sacrifice
- 7:25Speaker 1: to the Lord who passed over the houses of the
- 7:28Speaker 1: Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck
- 7:31Speaker 1: down the Egyptians. Then the people bowed down and worshiped.
- 7:35Speaker 1: The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded. Moses and Aaron.
- 7:39Speaker 1: At midnight, the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt,
- 7:43Speaker 1: from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on the throne,
- 7:45Speaker 1: to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh
- 7:52Speaker 1: and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up
- 7:54Speaker 1: during the night, and then there was loud wailing in Egypt,
- 7:58Speaker 1: for there was not a house without someone dead. So
- 8:03Speaker 1: God did what God said he would do through Moses.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And this is the most terrible therefore, of all of
- 8:10Speaker 1: the plagues, and it has a result the exodus. During
- 8:14Speaker 1: the night, Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, up,
- 8:17Speaker 1: leave my people, you and the Israelites go worship the Lord.
- 8:20Speaker 1: As you've requested, Take your flocks and your herds as
- 8:23Speaker 1: you have said, and go, and also bless me. The
- 8:26Speaker 1: Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country,
- 8:30Speaker 1: for otherwise, they said, we will all die. So the
- 8:33Speaker 1: people took their dough before the east was added, and
- 8:36Speaker 1: carried it on their shoulders in kneading troths wrapped in cloth.
- 8:39Speaker 1: The Israelites did this as Moses instructed, and asked Egyptians
- 8:43Speaker 1: for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. The
- 8:47Speaker 1: Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people
- 8:50Speaker 1: and gave them what they asked for, so they plundered
- 8:53Speaker 1: the Egyptians. The Israelites journeyed from Ramses to Suckoth. There
- 8:58Speaker 1: were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women
- 9:01Speaker 1: and children. Many other people went up with them, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. With
- 9:09Speaker 1: the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked
- 9:12Speaker 1: loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because
- 9:16Speaker 1: they had been driven out of Egypt and did not
- 9:18Speaker 1: have time to prepare food for themselves. Now the length
- 9:22Speaker 1: of time the Israelite people were in Egypt was four
- 9:25Speaker 1: hundred and thirty years. At the end of the four
- 9:28Speaker 1: hundred and thirty years to the very day, all the
- 9:31Speaker 1: Lord's divisions left Egypt because the Lord kept vigil that
- 9:35Speaker 1: night to bring them out of Egypt. And on this
- 9:38Speaker 1: night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor
- 9:41Speaker 1: the Lord for the generations to come. And so because
- 9:46Speaker 1: of this last plague, they are practically driven out of Egypt.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Everyone wants them to leave, take our money and go,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and so they take their gold. And you may wonder
- 9:57Speaker 1: a boy the clothes, but remember that at a time
- 9:59Speaker 1: before or industrialization, clothes were part of your wealth. You
- 10:04Speaker 1: would actually pass down clothes from generation to generation and
- 10:08Speaker 1: just mend them. Passover restrictions, the Lord said to Moses
- 10:11Speaker 1: and Aaron. These are the regulations for the passover meal.
- 10:14Speaker 1: No foreigner may eat it. Any slave you have bought
- 10:17Speaker 1: may eat it after you have circumcised him. But a
- 10:21Speaker 1: temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It must be eaten inside the house. Take none of
- 10:26Speaker 1: the meat outside the house, do not break any of
- 10:28Speaker 1: the bones. The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the
- 10:36Speaker 1: Lord's passover must have all the males in his household circumcised.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Then he may take part like one born in the land.
- 10:44Speaker 1: No uncircumcised male may eat it. The same law applies
- 10:47Speaker 1: to both the native born and to the foreigner residing
- 10:50Speaker 1: among you. All the Israelites did just as the Lord
- 10:53Speaker 1: had commanded Moses in Erin, And on that very day
- 10:57Speaker 1: the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.
- 11:02Speaker 1: So you'd think at this point we would be done
- 11:05Speaker 1: with this book. This book is about the Exodus, the
- 11:08Speaker 1: getting people of Israel out of Egypt, and they are
- 11:13Speaker 1: now out. But we're not done with a drama. We're
- 11:16Speaker 1: not done with Egypt. We'll continue on with that and
- 11:19Speaker 1: then this story of the Exodus actually continues into two
- 11:23Speaker 1: or three more books. It continues into Leviticus and Numbers
- 11:26Speaker 1: and Deuteronomy as well. We will probably continue this study
- 11:31Speaker 1: until we get to the end of this book and
- 11:32Speaker 1: then make and then perhaps continue on into Leviticus. But
- 11:37Speaker 1: with that, we're going to end this episode of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast. If you have any questions, send an
