- 0:00Speaker 1: Now.
- 0:00Speaker 2: We learned over the weekend, as we've spoken about, that
- 0:04Speaker 2: a Northern Territory Police officer had taken his own life,
- 0:07Speaker 2: the third in as many months for officers in the
- 0:10Speaker 2: Northern Territory. As we understand, he was a long serving
- 0:13Speaker 2: member of the force and wrote extensively about his struggles
- 0:17Speaker 2: with post traumatic stress. We know that Run for Blue
- 0:21Speaker 2: is on now and throughout May. It is a virtual
- 0:24Speaker 2: race held annually that supports families of fallen police officers
- 0:28Speaker 2: through police legacy. And I am joined on the line
- 0:32Speaker 2: by Northern Territory Police officer and one of the event organizers,
- 0:36Speaker 2: Tammy Watson. Good morning to you, Tammy.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, how am you today?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Not too bad? Tammy?
- 0:44Speaker 2: You and I have spoken over the years about Run
- 0:46Speaker 2: for Blue and the wonderful, wonderful event and wonderful thing
- 0:49Speaker 2: that it is. We know it's important every year to
- 0:52Speaker 2: recognize how officers really put all of themselves into their
- 0:57Speaker 2: job as officers, and we know that I think really
- 1:02Speaker 2: for this year is it's more meaningful than ever.
- 1:07Speaker 3: It certainly is, Katie, it really is. Those many people
- 1:12Speaker 3: are aware that we've lost three of our members in
- 1:17Speaker 3: the last three months, whether they've been current serving or
- 1:21Speaker 3: ex members but still very close to the job. So yeah,
- 1:25Speaker 3: this year is really really important to us and to
- 1:29Speaker 3: be able to support the families of those members.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It is so incredibly important.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Like I said, you and I have spoken on over
- 1:36Speaker 2: the years about the wonderful event. I know that it's
- 1:41Speaker 2: been a really tough few months for our territory police.
- 1:45Speaker 2: When you talk about the loss of those three officers
- 1:48Speaker 2: and something that is hard, I'm sure for you to
- 1:51Speaker 2: speak about a beautiful post on the Facebook page over
- 1:56Speaker 2: the weekend though as well. And look, I don't obviously
- 2:01Speaker 2: it's your call whether you want to, you know, whether
- 2:04Speaker 2: you want to name the person whose life was lost
- 2:07Speaker 2: on the weekend, but you know, it's just heartbreaking when
- 2:11Speaker 2: you think of what's going.
- 2:12Speaker 3: On, it is absolutely heartbreaking. Look, I haven't spoken to
- 2:18Speaker 3: the family law gain permission to speak publicly. Obviously our
- 2:22Speaker 3: Facebook page is open to the public, but to speak
- 2:26Speaker 3: about it is very difficult. This member was a fierce
- 2:30Speaker 3: advocate for talking about mental health and acknowledging that he'd
- 2:35Speaker 3: had his own difficulties over the years, and he really
- 2:40Speaker 3: made it okay for particularly our older members to recognize
- 2:45Speaker 3: that it's all right, not to be okay. So yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 3: an absolute tragic loss. He was a mentor, an amazing
- 2:51Speaker 3: police officer, highly respected across the agency and as an agency.
- 2:58Speaker 3: We're all grieving, but I can't imagine what his family
- 2:59Speaker 3: is going through at the moment.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah me either, you know, my heart goes out to
- 3:04Speaker 2: them and to all of you.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Really, it's such a tough time.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I know that I'd certainly interacted with this person in
- 3:12Speaker 2: his role, and he was a wonderful bloke.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I certainly didn't know him well.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But with those interactions, I knew he was a really
- 3:20Speaker 2: good person. And like I've said, it is so hard
- 3:24Speaker 2: for you guys right now when you're dealing with the
- 3:26Speaker 2: loss of your work colleagues, but work colleagues who are
- 3:31Speaker 2: incredibly good friends, and it really does just show you
- 3:34Speaker 2: how important that Run for Blue is. Tell us a
- 3:38Speaker 2: little bit about you know what the aim is for
- 3:40Speaker 2: this year, Tammy, Yeah, so.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Look Run for Blue for those that don't know, is
- 3:44Speaker 3: a virtual run or walk or hop skip jumper. I
- 3:47Speaker 3: don't really care. But for the entire months of May,
- 3:51Speaker 3: we encourage people to get out and walk, exercise, do
- 3:55Speaker 3: whatever you can, but register for our event. Everything that
- 3:58Speaker 3: we goes to the police legacies across Australia. This is
- 4:02Speaker 3: our fourth year running or walking how would you look
- 4:06Speaker 3: at it? And you know, we just want to tip
- 4:11Speaker 3: the scales. Like we've been able to raise over three
- 4:14Speaker 3: hundred thousand in the last three years. Last year alone
- 4:18Speaker 3: was one hundred and eighty five thousand across the Australia.
- 4:22Speaker 3: The NT really need our support this year and everybody's support.
- 4:26Speaker 3: We've got grieving families more so than what we we've
- 4:29Speaker 3: had in the past in such a short amount of time,
- 4:33Speaker 3: and so we really really want to get behind our
- 4:36Speaker 3: MT colleagues and families to raise money for the non
- 4:41Speaker 3: Territory Police Legacy so that they can support those families
- 4:45Speaker 3: while they're going through the most freendous time of their lives.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Tell me, how can people get involved?
- 4:50Speaker 2: You know, maybe they don't have a family member that's
- 4:53Speaker 2: a police officer, or they don't even really know any
- 4:56Speaker 2: of our police first hand, but what can they do?
- 4:59Speaker 2: How can they get involved to show their support for
- 5:02Speaker 2: our police?
- 5:04Speaker 3: So run for black, Just Google or whatever search engine
- 5:07Speaker 3: you use, Run for blue, it will come up with it.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Go fundraise me. So go fundraise website where you register
- 5:14Speaker 3: and or you can even donate directly to the police
- 5:18Speaker 3: legacy via that means
