- 0:19Hey, hey, I'm Hannah Liz, a coastal living, Jesus
- 0:23loving, NC native, and you're listening to the
- 0:25Living Freed podcast. This podcast is for the
- 0:29girlies. and where we discuss intentionally living
- 0:31our lives to the fullest that God has intended,
- 0:34having those late night open heart friend convos,
- 0:37not letting others, ourselves, or ideas hold
- 0:39us down, and allowing Jesus to set us free from
- 0:42the chains we didn't know we're holding on to,
- 0:45and of course, the Bible. Now let's dive into
- 0:48today's episode. Today we're going to start a
- 0:56monthly series going over the lineage of Jesus.
- 0:59So cool, right? I know for many of us, we start
- 1:02to read the who we got whom and get tired or
- 1:05find it overwhelming or boring. And if you're
- 1:07like me, you think I'll just get back to that
- 1:10next time. Well, next time came around for me
- 1:13eventually, as it always does. And I almost skipped
- 1:15it again, like I usually do, but decided to make
- 1:18myself read it. And I realized I actually knew
- 1:20some of the names I was reading in their stories.
- 1:23I found it kind of cool. I laid a Bible study
- 1:26on Wednesday nights and as I talked with my favorite
- 1:29girls in Wilmington, I found I wasn't the only
- 1:31one to find the task of reading the genealogy
- 1:33of Jesus daunting and not useful to my personal
- 1:36life. I had to find a way to get excited about
- 1:39it because I do love history and I love the Bible
- 1:42and Jesus, so why did I not enjoy reading about
- 1:45the lineage of Jesus? I came up with a plan.
- 1:48I was going to start at the beginning again for
- 1:51the hundredth time in my life. and every time
- 1:53I recognized a name from the genealogy of Jesus,
- 1:55I would flip to the first chapter of Matthew
- 1:57and highlight that name. It actually was kind
- 2:01of fun and became not just a checklist kind of
- 2:03thing, because your girl does love a checklist,
- 2:06but it also became almost like that hidden image
- 2:08game you'd find in a kid's magazine as a child,
- 2:11which I enjoy. Not past tense, enjoyed. Presently,
- 2:15enjoy. I don't know why, I just love these games.
- 2:18Now I know a lot of us get overwhelmed or lost
- 2:21when reading the Old Testament part of the Bible
- 2:23and we kind of find it boring sometimes. I'm
- 2:26starting this monthly series to break down the
- 2:28lineage of Jesus for you and me. Now with this
- 2:31series you can follow along just by listening
- 2:33or you can take the time to open your Bible and
- 2:36read along as well. We'll jump back and forth
- 2:39to a couple passages just so you can really get
- 2:41to know the characters that are going to come
- 2:42into play. but for now we're going to open to
- 2:45Matthew chapter 1 and read verses 1 through 16.
- 2:49The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the
- 2:52son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was
- 2:55the father of Isaac and Isaac the father of Jacob
- 2:58and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers
- 3:01and Judah the father of Perez and Zarah by Tamar
- 3:04and Perez the father of Hezeron and Hezeron the
- 3:07father of Ram, the father of Amit and Adab. and
- 3:11Aminadab the father of Nashon and Nashon the
- 3:14father of Solomon and Solomon the father of Boaz
- 3:18by Rahab and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth
- 3:22and Obed the father of Jesse and Jesse the father
- 3:25of David the king and David was the father of
- 3:29Solomon by the wife of Uriah and Solomon the
- 3:33father of Rehoboam and Rehoboam the father I
- 3:36don't know how to say that name and Rehoboam
- 3:38the father of Abijah and Abijah the father of
- 3:42Asaph and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat and
- 3:45Jehoshaphat the father of Joram and Joram the
- 3:50father of Uzziah and Uzziah the father of Jotham
- 3:54and Jotham the father of Ahaz and Ahaz the father
- 3:57of Hezekiah and Hezekiah the father I don't want
- 4:02to say that name either and Hezekiah the father
- 4:05of Manasseh Ammonaza the father of Amos and Amos
- 4:10the father of Josiah and Josiah the father of
- 4:13Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the
- 4:16deportation to Babylon and after the deportation
- 4:19to Babylon Jeconiah was the father to Shealtiel
- 4:22and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel and Zerubbabel
- 4:27the father of Abed and Abed the father of Eliakim
- 4:31and Eliakim the father of Azar and Azar the father
- 4:35of Zadok So let's go back. Who was first? Abraham.
- 4:56Who is Abraham? Well, let's go back to his beginning.
- 5:00We first meet him as Abram, who is a 75 year
- 5:03old man who is married to Sarai. Genesis 12,
- 5:06God calls Abraham to leave his home country and
- 5:09family to a land God will show him. Not a land
- 5:12he knows or has an idea of, but will walk until
- 5:15God is like, yep, this is it, man. You can stop
- 5:18and pitch your tent here. So we're going to jump
- 5:20over to Genesis 12. We're going to read verses
- 5:221 and 2 and then verses 4 and 9. Now the Lord
- 5:26said to Abraham, go from your country and your
- 5:28kindred and your father's house to the land that
- 5:30I will show you. And I will make you a great
- 5:33nation and I will bless you and make your name
- 5:36great so that you will be a blessing And then
- 5:39in verses four through nine it says So abraham
- 5:42went as the lord had told him and lot went with
- 5:45him and abraham was 75 years old when he departed
- 5:49from haran and abraham took sarah his wife and
- 5:53lot his brother's son so his nephew and all the
- 5:56possessions that they had gathered and the people
- 5:59that they had and the people they had acquired
- 6:02in Horan, and they set out to go to the land
- 6:05of Canaan. When they had come to the land of
- 6:07Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the
- 6:09place of Shechem and the oak of Morah. At the
- 6:14time, the Canaanites were in the land. Then the
- 6:16Lord appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring
- 6:19I will give this land. So he built there an altar
- 6:21to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there
- 6:25he moved to the hill country, to the east of
- 6:27Bethlehem, and pitched his tent. After that,
- 6:41we see him continue to journey in verses 10 -20.
- 6:44And the famine hits the land, so he goes to Egypt.
- 6:47Now, when he gets to Egypt, he knows his wife
- 6:50is beautiful and that Pharaoh's men sure as hell
- 6:54gonna kill him so that Pharaoh can have Sarai
- 6:57for himself. So Abram tells her that they will
- 7:00need to pretend to be brother and sister until
- 7:02they can get out of there. In Shura's hat, Pharaoh's
- 7:06guys see Sarai and are like, oh, Pharaoh's got
- 7:10to have this woman. And Pharaoh gives Abram a
- 7:13bunch of livestock for Sarai, takes his new woman
- 7:16home with him, and goes about his life. But God
- 7:20plagues Pharaoh's household. Won't be the last
- 7:23time because he took Sarai and Pharaoh's like,
- 7:26hold up, something isn't right here. He calls
- 7:29out Abram and basically said, bro, if I had known
- 7:32she was your wife, I wouldn't have taken her.
- 7:34Get the heck out. Go ahead and take everything
- 7:36I gave you. Be on your way. So they leave and
- 7:39kept on with their journey. While Abram is going
- 7:42about his journey, God makes a covenant with
- 7:44him. We're going to jump over to chapters 15
- 7:47and read verses one through 18. Okay, chapter
- 7:5015, verse one. After these things the word of
- 7:53the Lord came to Abram in a vision. Fear not
- 7:56Abram. I am your shield. Your reward shall be
- 7:59very great. But Abram said, O Lord God, what
- 8:03will you give me? For I continue childless. And
- 8:06the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus.
- 8:08And Abram said, behold, you have given me no
- 8:11offspring, and a member of my household will
- 8:13be my heir. And behold, the word of the Lord
- 8:16came to him. This man shall not be your heir.
- 8:19Your very own son shall be your heir. And he
- 8:22brought him outside and said, Look towards the
- 8:24heaven, the number of the stars, if you are able
- 8:27to number them. Then he said to him, So shall
- 8:29your offspring be. And he believed the Lord,
- 8:33and he counted it to him as righteousness. And
- 8:35he said to him, I am the Lord who brought you
- 8:38out from the Chaldeans to give you this land
- 8:41to possess. But he said, O Lord God, how am I
- 8:45to know that I possess it? And the Lord said
- 8:47to him, bring me a heifer three years old, a
- 8:50female goat three years old, a ram three years
- 8:53old, turtle dove, and a young pigeon. And he
- 8:56brought him all these, cut them in half, and
- 8:59laid each half over against the other. But he
- 9:02did not cut the birds in half. And when the birds
- 9:05of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove
- 9:08them away. As the sun was going down, a deep
- 9:10sleep fell on Abram, and behold, a dreadful and
- 9:13great darkness fell upon him. Then the Lord said
- 9:16to Abram, Know for certain that your offspring
- 9:18will be soldier -owners in this land, that is
- 9:21not theirs and will be servants there. And they
- 9:23will be afflicted for four hundred years. But
- 9:26I will bring judgment on the nations they serve,
- 9:29and afterwards they shall come out with great
- 9:31possession. As for you, you shall go to your
- 9:34fathers in peace. You shall be buried at a good
- 9:37old age, and they shall come back here in the
- 9:40fourth generation. For the iniquity of the Amorites
- 9:42is not yet complete. When the sun had gone down
- 9:45and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and
- 9:49the flaming torch passed between these pieces.
- 9:52On that day, the Lord had made a covenant with
- 9:54Abram, saying, To your offspring I give this
- 9:56land, from the river of Egypt to the great river
- 9:59of Aphrodites. Land of the Canaanites, the Kinzanites,
- 10:03the Kadamites, the Hittites, the Prezorites,
- 10:05the Ephraim, and the Amharites, the Canaanites,
- 10:08the Gizetites, and the Jebusites. So here, God
- 10:11told Abraham to cut the animals but didn't tell
- 10:14him to walk through them because God Himself
- 10:16planned to pass through them. This act indicates
- 10:19that God promised to take the curse of the covenant
- 10:22upon Himself if Abraham broke it. This moment
- 10:25looks ahead to Jesus the Son of God and the lineage
- 10:28of Abraham would die on the cross so that we
- 10:31may receive the blessing of the covenant. We're
- 10:33going to jump over to Galatians chapter 3 verses
- 10:367 through 9. Okay. So, verses 7 -9 says, In chapter
- 11:0117, God makes another covenant to set Abraham
- 11:04and his household apart by circumcision and changes
- 11:07his name to Abraham as to make him a new identity
- 11:11through God. And the promise of a child is given,
- 11:13aka Isaac. And in chapter 21, the promise of
- 11:17Isaac has been fulfilled. So who is Abraham?
- 11:20A man who acted and left the land he knew to
- 11:23wander to a land he'd never known by faith. Knowing
- 11:26his God can be trusted, a sojourner that knew
- 11:30his God would come through and not just provide
- 11:32a place for him and his wife to lay their heads
- 11:35down at night, but would also provide a child.
- 11:38He didn't know when he would get to settle into
- 11:41the land God had promised or when exactly God
- 11:43would give him his heart's dream of a child,
- 11:46but he knew his God and had not just faith but
- 11:49trust that God would be righteous and keep his
- 11:51promise. From Abraham, we go to Isaac. Isaac's
- 11:56name means laughter. He will laugh or he rejoices.
- 12:00We see the relation of his name in not only chapter
- 12:0321 but also in 1810 when it talks about Sarah
- 12:06waiting outside the tent door as she hears God
- 12:09speaking to Abraham letting him know that there
- 12:11will be a child. Sarah laughs herself thinking,
- 12:14me at my age? No way. But then she laughs and
- 12:17rejoices again when she has Isaac. In chapter
- 12:2022, we enter into the famous story of Abraham
- 12:23being asked to sacrifice Isaac his son. We're
- 12:26going to go over and read verses 1 through 18.
- 12:31After these things, God tested Abraham and said
- 12:34to him, Abraham, and he said, here I am. And
- 12:37the Lord said, take your son, your only son,
- 12:39Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Morah.
- 12:43and offer him there as a burnt offering on one
- 12:45of the mountains, of which I shall tell you.
- 12:47So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled
- 12:50his donkey, took two of his young men with him
- 12:52and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the
- 12:55burnt offering, and rose and went to the place
- 12:57of which God had told him. On the third day,
- 13:00Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place
- 13:02from afar. Then Abraham said to his young man,
- 13:06Stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy
- 13:08will go over there and worship, and come again
- 13:10to you. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt
- 13:13offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he
- 13:17took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they
- 13:19went both of them together. And Isaac said to
- 13:22his father, Abraham, my father. And he said,
- 13:24here I am, my son. And he said, behold, the fire
- 13:27and the wood, but there is no lamb for the burnt
- 13:29offering. And Abraham said, God will provide
- 13:32for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my
- 13:34son. So they went both of them together. When
- 13:37they came to the place of which God had told
- 13:39him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the
- 13:41wood in order and bound Isaac his son, and laid
- 13:44him on the altar on top of the wood. Then Abraham
- 13:47reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter
- 13:50his son. But the angel of the Lord came to him
- 13:52from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham, and he
- 13:55said, here I am. And he said, do not lay your
- 13:57hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now
- 14:00I know that you fear God, seeing you have not
- 14:03withheld your son, your only son from me. And
- 14:06Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and behold,
- 14:09behind him was a ram caught in the thickets by
- 14:12its horns. And Abraham went and took the ram
- 14:15and offered it up as a burnt offering instead
- 14:17of his son. So Abraham called the name of the
- 14:20place the Lord will provide. As it is said to
- 14:22this day, on the mount of the Lord it shall be
- 14:25provided. And the angel of the Lord called to
- 14:27Abraham a second time from heaven, and he said,
- 14:30by myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because
- 14:32you have done this in... And have not withheld
- 14:35your son, your only son, I will surely bless
- 14:38you. I will surely multiply your offspring as
- 14:41the stars of heaven, and as the sands that are
- 14:43in the seashore. And your offspring shall possess
- 14:45the gate of his enemy. And your offspring shall
- 14:48be the nations of the earth be blessed, because
- 14:50you have obeyed my voice. So Abraham returned
- 14:53to his young men, and they arose and went together
- 14:56to Bathsheba. And Abraham lived there in Bathsheba.
- 14:59I think this is a hard story to fully comprehend.
- 15:02Why would God ask this of Abram? The answer is
- 15:05that God wanted to be sure he wouldn't withhold
- 15:08anything from him, even his only son. We know
- 15:11that God had already made the commitment and
- 15:13promise to uphold his side of the covenant and
- 15:16promise he had made to Abraham. But now he sees
- 15:19the actions of how trusting and faithful Abraham
- 15:21is. Through Abraham's actions, he brought his
- 15:23son Isaac into the journey of not just trusting
- 15:26and knowing God, but also how to act in faith.
- 15:30We also see the correlation of Isaac to Jesus
- 15:33because Abraham was a starting place for us,
- 15:37just like God is a starting place for us. God
- 15:39used Abraham's faith and actions and made the
- 15:42covenant, but God also used Abraham's son. He
- 15:45had his son carry his own wood to his own sacrifice
- 15:47to be laid on, just like Jesus carried his own
- 15:50cross to be sacrificed on. We know that God had
- 15:54made the commitment and promise to uphold his
- 15:56side of the covenant and promise he made to Abraham.
- 15:59It's crazy the foretelling in this story and
- 16:01how far we see it come because he didn't know
- 16:04what because Isaac didn't know how he was going
- 16:06to be used in this faith journey. what he was
- 16:09going to represent in that moment but Jesus knew
- 16:13and now we get to see it hundreds of years into
- 16:16the future. Okay flash forward in time with me
- 16:20to chapter 24. Here we're gonna see Isaac's dad
- 16:23sends off a trusted servant from the household
- 16:26to go get Isaac a wife. Now in verse 1 we see
- 16:29it say now Abraham was old well advanced in years
- 16:32and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things
- 16:34and Abraham said to the servant the oldest of
- 16:37his household who had charge of all that he had
- 16:41Put your hands under my thigh that I will make
- 16:43you swear to the Lord the God of heaven and earth
- 16:46That you will not take a wife for my son from
- 16:48the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I
- 16:50dwell But will go to my country and my kindred
- 16:54and take a wife for my son Isaac there So then
- 16:57in verse 6 Abraham reminds the servant of the
- 16:59promise he made to God where it says Abraham
- 17:01said to him See to it that you do not take my
- 17:03son back there the Lord the God of heaven who
- 17:06took me from my father's house and from the land
- 17:08of my Kindred and who spoke to me and swore to
- 17:11me to your offspring I will give this land He
- 17:14will send his angel before you and you shall
- 17:16take a wife for my son from there But if the
- 17:18woman's not willing to follow you then you will
- 17:20be free from this oath of mine Only you must
- 17:23not take my son back there so the servant put
- 17:26his hand under the thigh of abraham his master
- 17:28and swore to him concerning this matter so the
- 17:30servant travels to the land of which abraham's
- 17:34from and finds rebecca by a well he's praying
- 17:37very specifically to the lord and the lord provides
- 17:40detail by detail as rebecca shows up so he brings
- 17:44rebecca back with him to where abraham and isaac
- 17:48are and rebecca she is everything she's not just
- 17:51abraham's great niece But she is beauty, she
- 17:54is grace. Rebecca makes the journey back with
- 17:58the servant, meets Isaac in a field, and in verse
- 18:0067 we see them get together ASAP, end quote.
- 18:04He loved her and he found comfort in her after
- 18:07his mother's death. Isaac was probably around
- 18:0926 when his mom died, so it's not that he was
- 18:12a total mama's boy, even though I personally
- 18:15am getting the vibe that he was. And he was around
- 18:1840 when he ended up marrying Rebecca. Isaac was
- 18:21also around 60 when him and Rebekah receiving
- 18:24gave birth to Jacob and Esau. Now Rebekah had
- 18:26been barren for many years and God heard Isaac's
- 18:29plea for a child and provided not one child but
- 18:32two nations. Later in chapter 26 we see a famine
- 18:36hit the land and Isaac leaves to find better
- 18:38land and like so many before him and many after
- 18:42he heads to Egypt. Big shocker right? But God
- 18:46stops him on his way there. and asked him to
- 18:49stay in the land he is traveling through. This
- 18:51land already has people in it and what's so interesting
- 18:54about this story is where we see history repeat
- 18:57itself because Isaac was afraid of his wife's
- 18:59beauty and asked her to pretend to be his sister
- 19:02in fear that the people of the land would kill
- 19:04him to claim Rebecca. Just like his father in
- 19:07the past, this didn't last long. He got called
- 19:10out, he did stay a while, did his thing, sowed
- 19:13the land. trusted God to have him prosper, and
- 19:17then he was asked to leave, just as his father
- 19:19had been. So who was Isaac? Isaac was the son
- 19:22of Abraham, the father of Jacob. He was conceived
- 19:25by faith of a mother who was a hundred years
- 19:28old. Isaac was a test of faith when asked to
- 19:31be offered as a sacrifice. He lost his mom at
- 19:33a young -ish age, got married, and even though
- 19:36they struggled to conceive, had faith that once
- 19:39again God would fall through on his promises
- 19:41and faithfulness. Abraham made the first physical
- 19:45step in his faith journey, made the covenant
- 19:47with God, and Isaac picked it up, trusting God
- 19:50with his life, wife, and future children. The
- 19:53whole lineage of Jesus is about the covenant
- 19:55being followed through on God's side. The follow
- 19:58through of one step of faith led to many steps
- 20:02of faith by many others. An almost sacrifice
- 20:05of a son to an actual sacrifice of the Son of
- 20:08God. How cool is that? Sometimes you don't realize
- 20:12the stories you're reading as it leads into this,
- 20:14but I hope that you're enjoying the lineage of
- 20:16Jesus as we conquered not one, but two people
- 20:19today, that being Abraham and Isaac. I hope you
- 20:22enjoy today, and I hope that you're excited to
- 20:24learn more as we go into the next couple of months.
- 20:27Let's pray. Father, thank you so much for this
- 20:31opportunity to learn about you and your history,
- 20:34to see you fall through on promises over and
- 20:36over and over again, to see your faithfulness
- 20:39and how you show up. when we show up how you
- 20:42ask us to make actions and take action and how
- 20:44you fall through on our actions as that we feel
- 20:48encouraged today by you that we feel uplifted
- 20:51by you that we don't feel held back by what's
- 20:53going on in this world because we are loved by
- 20:55you and we know that you fall through on promises
- 20:57and that we may have faith in you and in jesus
- 21:00name amen Thank you so much for listening to
