- 0:12Hello friends, Chaplain Connery here reporting for service.
- 0:17Well Oh dear, I actually have no idea how I'm going to need to
- 0:23front up and do what I do. Oh dear.
- 0:27There's going to be a lot of learning ahead of me as I learn
- 0:31the 1003 letter acronyms and who I meant to call by their rank
- 0:35and who I meant to be calling by their first name, and who
- 0:38salutes me and I salute. Oh dear.
- 0:40I'm sure there are simple rules that I will learn and that will
- 0:43come in due course. But in the midst of all of the
- 0:47change that is happening for me, isn't it nice that I still get
- 0:50to sit down with you, friend? And you and I can continue to
- 0:54read together, and particularly continue reading through this
- 0:58journey of Acts as we hear about Paul as he travels around.
- 1:04Well, we call it the Mediterranean, but back then it
- 1:07was just the world. And he shared this incredible
- 1:09good news about what Jesus had done for them.
- 1:13And yes, friend, for you and for me.
- 1:15So let us continue to read together.
- 1:19Turning now to Acts chapter 16. Paul went first to Derby and
- 1:34then to Lystra, where there was a young disciple named Timothy.
- 1:38His mother was a Jewish believer, but his father was a
- 1:41Greek. Timothy was well thought of by
- 1:44the believers in Lystra and Iconium, so Paul wanted him to
- 1:48join them on their journey. In deference to the Jews of the
- 1:51area, he arranged for Timothy to be circumcised before they left,
- 1:55for everyone knew that his father was a Greek.
- 1:58Then they went from town to town, instructing the believers
- 2:02to follow the decisions made by the apostles and elders in
- 2:05Jerusalem. So the churches were
- 2:07strengthened in their faith and grew larger every day.
- 2:11Next, Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Frajia and
- 2:16Galatia because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from
- 2:19preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.
- 2:23Then, coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the
- 2:26province of Bethania. But again, the spirit of Jesus
- 2:30did not allow them to go there. So instead they went on through
- 2:35Micea to the seaport of Troas. That night Paula had a vision.
- 2:40A man from Macedonia in northern Greece was standing there
- 2:44pleading with him come over to Macedonia and help us.
- 2:50So we decided to leave for Macedonia at once, having
- 2:53concluded that God was calling us to preach the good news
- 2:55there. We boarded a boat at Troas and
- 2:59sailed straight across to the island of Samothras, and the
- 3:03next day we landed at Neapolis. From there we reached Phillip I,
- 3:07a major city of that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony,
- 3:12and we stayed there several days on the Sabbath, we went a little
- 3:16way outside the city to a riverbank where we thought
- 3:19people would be meeting for prayer, and we sat down to speak
- 3:23with some women who had gathered there.
- 3:25One of them was Lydia from Fiatira, A merchant of expensive
- 3:30purple cloth who worshipped God. As she listened to us, the Lord
- 3:35opened her heart and she accepted what Paul was saying.
- 3:38She and her household were baptized, and she asked us to be
- 3:42her guests. If you agree that I'm a true
- 3:45believer in the Lord, she said, come and stay at my home.
- 3:50And she urged us until we agreed.
- 3:54One day, as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a
- 3:57slave girl who had a spirit that enabled her to tell the future.
- 4:01She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes.
- 4:05She followed Paul and the rest of us shouting.
- 4:08These men are servants of the Most High God, and they've come
- 4:12to tell you how to be saved. This went on day after day until
- 4:18Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon
- 4:22within her. I command you in the name of
- 4:25Jesus Christ to come out of her and instantly it left her.
- 4:31Her master's hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they
- 4:34grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the
- 4:37authorities at the marketplace. The whole city is in an uproar
- 4:41because of these Jews, they shouted to the city officials.
- 4:45They are teaching customs that are illegal for us Romans to
- 4:48practice. A mob quickly formed against
- 4:51Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped
- 4:55and beaten with wooden rods. They were severely beaten, and
- 4:59then they were thrown into prison.
- 5:02The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn't escape, so the
- 5:05jailer put them in the inner dungeon and clamped their feet
- 5:08in the stocks. Around midnight, Paul and Silas
- 5:12were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners
- 5:16were listening. Suddenly there was a massive
- 5:19earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations.
- 5:23All the doors immediately flew open and the chains of every
- 5:27prisoner fell off. The jailer woke up to see the
- 5:30prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had
- 5:34escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself, but Paul shouted
- 5:38to him. Stop, don't kill yourself, we're
- 5:41all here. The jailer called for lights and
- 5:44ran to the dungeon and fell down, trembling before Paul and
- 5:48Silas. Then he brought them out and
- 5:51asked, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
- 5:56They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be
- 6:00saved along with everyone in your household.
- 6:03And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who
- 6:06lived in his household. Even at that hour of the night.
- 6:10The jailer cared for them and washed their wounds.
- 6:13Then he and everyone in his household were immediately
- 6:17baptized. He brought them into his house
- 6:19and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household
- 6:23rejoiced because they all believed in God.
- 6:27The next morning, the city officials sent the police to
- 6:29tell the jailer, Let those men go.
- 6:33So the jailer told Paul. The city officials have said you
- 6:37and Silas are free to leave, go in peace.
- 6:41But, Paul replied, they have publicly beaten us without a
- 6:44trial and put us in prison. And we are Roman citizens, so
- 6:49now they want us to leave secretly, certainly not let them
- 6:54come themselves to release us. When the police reported this,
- 6:59the city officials were alarmed to learn that Paul and Silas
- 7:02were Roman citizens. So they came to the jail and
- 7:05apologized to them. Then they brought them out and
- 7:08begged them to leave the city. When Paul and Silas left the
- 7:12prison, they returned to the home of Lydia.
- 7:15There they met with the believers and encouraged them
- 7:17once more. Then they left town.
- 7:30Thank you, Jesus, for your love. Thank you for the way that you,
- 7:37our Father, open your family and invite us in.
- 7:40Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you come to dwell in us and that
- 7:45every step of every part of our journey there you are resident
- 7:52in us, blessing us with your presence.
- 7:56Father, Son, Holy Spirit, we just worship you.
- 8:01You are a beautiful, wonderful God, mighty and able to be
- 8:07feared for all that you are capable of.
- 8:11But then you draw near to us and that fear becomes adoration.
- 8:16We just adore you. I'll try you in God, and it's in
- 8:21your blessed name that we pray. Amen.
