- 0:06Good evening everybody from Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C.
- 0:11It's time again for Yankee baseball and tonight's game between the New York Yankees and the Washington Senators.
- 0:16The Senators have given the Yankees more trouble this year than any other team in the American League.
- 0:21The Yankees have won but five while losing 11 to Washington, including last night's 4-2 defeat
- 0:28to the combined pitching of Bill Gagalewski and Joe Grisenda,
- 0:32with Grisenda getting the win when Gagalewski had to leave the ballgame raising a blister on his throwing hand.
- 0:38And Stan Bonson was the starter and loser in the ballgame for the Yankees.
- 0:42Tonight Mel Stottlemeyer will try to slow down the Senators
- 0:47and he'll be opposed by left-hander Jim Schellenbach, the only team in the American League.
- 0:51Schellenbach has been able to beat this year is the Yankees.
- 0:54He has won three, he has lost ten on the season against the New York Yankees, he has won three and he has lost two.
- 1:01And it's amazing how one pitcher can sometimes get a grip on a ball club.
- 1:05The Yankees have been able though to defeat Schellenbach.
- 1:08In fact, they put it to him the last time that he pitched against him.
- 1:12It's a good evening for baseball here in Washington.
- 1:14The crowd looks like it may be just about the same as it was last night.
- 1:18And there's a big drive on here right now in the Washington Daily News
- 1:22to fill this ballpark for the final game the Senators will play here against the Yankees tomorrow night.
- 1:28And that human cry has been taken up by several of the radio stations and a couple of TV stations.
- 1:34Bill White, it's going to be interesting to see just what does happen tomorrow night.
- 1:37The whole theme of the thing is to get the ballpark as full as possible.
- 1:42And then at the end of the seventh inning, or at the middle of the seventh inning I guess,
- 1:46get up for the seventh inning stretch and the fans are going to be asked to boo
- 1:49owner Bob Short so loud that he'll hear it wherever he is.
- 1:53I'll tell you one thing, Short is not going to be here in this ballpark.
- 1:56I don't know where he's going to be. He might be down in Arlington, Texas.
- 1:59But he isn't going to be here. But they do want to show,
- 2:02the Washington people want to show that they can support Mesa Lake baseball.
- 2:05And they're being asked to come out tomorrow.
- 2:07I personally don't think too many of them will be out here.
- 2:09I don't think it's going to be that big a crowd.
- 2:11They're probably a larger crowd than we had at first start.
- 2:14Well, the umpires have come out for the home plate meeting with the managers.
- 2:17And Bill White will be back with the starting lineups in just one minute.
- 2:31One day in 1840, a three-masted schooner sailed into New York.
- 2:37On board was a young man from Wetzlar, Germany.
- 2:41He'd set sail with just a dollar in his pocket,
- 2:44and an old family recipe for a new kind of beer.
- 2:47His name was Maximilian Schaeffer.
- 2:50And the beer he introduced to America was Schaeffer Lager beer.
- 2:54It was aged or lagered for many weeks, to give it a unique lightness and quality.
- 3:01Today, Schaeffer is still unique, with flavor that never fades,
- 3:05first frosty glass to last.
- 3:07It's the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 3:37It's the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 4:07Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 4:17O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave
- 4:37Well, looking at the lineup,
- 4:38Torres Clark will lead off with the Yankees and play second base.
- 4:41Rusty Torres will play right field and he'll back second.
- 4:44Bobby Mercer returns in his fight for Tony Oliva.
- 4:48For the American League batting title, Bobby will bat third and play center field.
- 4:52Royal White in left field will bat fourth.
- 4:54Felipe Alou will be at first base and he'll hit fifth.
- 4:56Batting sixth and playing third base, Ronnie Henson.
- 4:59Catching and batting seventh, Jake Gibbs.
- 5:01And the shortstop and batting eighth, Gene Michael in pitching,
- 5:04and batting ninth, Mel Stottlemeyer.
- 5:06I'll be back with the Washington Senator lineup after this.
- 5:10Let's pause now. This is the New York Yankee baseball network.
- 5:13This is your station identification.
- 5:16This is your guy, Hi Agents.
- 5:18Join me for your kind of music weekdays, 3 to 7,
- 5:21here on the fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectady.
- 5:31The Washington Senators will line up this way behind Jim Schellenbach.
- 5:34Dell answer will lead off and play center field.
- 5:36Toby Harrell will play third base and he'll bat second.
- 5:39Larry Bittner will play first base.
- 5:41He'll bat third, batting fourth and playing left field, Frank Howard.
- 5:45Batting fifth, the youngster Jeff Burrows, he'll play right field.
- 5:48He'll say he will catch and he'll bat sixth.
- 5:50Jim Mason, the shortstop, will bat seventh.
- 5:52Tom Ragland will be at second base, batting eighth and batting ninth
- 5:55and pitching the left-hander, Jim Schellenbach.
- 6:00As Forrest Clark steps in, stepping in here behind the mic, Frank Besser.
- 6:05Okay, thank you very much.
- 6:11Forrest Clark steps in, he'll be batting right-handed against Schellenbach.
- 6:16Schellenbach big left-hander into the lineup, the first pitch of the ball game.
- 6:19Curbball is over for a called strike and this game is underway.
- 6:25Bill Faye, whom we have not seen before, behind the plate tonight for the Senators.
- 6:28Clark is batting 2-48.
- 6:30He swings and he misses. No balls, two strikes.
- 6:37Bobby Mercer has his work cut out for him as he will try to nip Oliva for the batting title.
- 6:43The 0-2 pitch. Curbball is over, strike three is called.
- 6:46Clark on three pitches is out on strikes.
- 6:51Played on by tonight is Lou DiMuro at first base, Jim Odom.
- 6:54At second base, Jake O'Donnell and at third base, Jim Honachin.
- 6:59Here comes Rusty Torres.
- 7:03Torres has switched it or batting right against Schellenbach.
- 7:06Torres had 2-4 last night.
- 7:10Batting 4-12.
- 7:12He's done 7-17. His first pitch on the ground is short.
- 7:15Flag down by Mason.
- 7:17Over to first base where Larry Bickner takes the throw and there are two down.
- 7:21Jim Mason throws out Rusty Torres and here comes Bobby.
- 7:27Mercer is hitting 3-31.
- 7:32He went 1-4 last night.
- 7:35Prior to last night, what was it Bill Cain? 7-12 he needed so that leaves 6-8 he must have.
- 7:454-4.
- 7:48Bobby has had one 4-hit game this year. He went 4-5 once.
- 7:51He bluffs a bunt and takes a strike.
- 7:58There have been 18 times this year when Bobby Mercer has had as many as 3 base hits in a ball game.
- 8:03Once 4. He hits this one on the ground left side, deep short.
- 8:07Up with it, Mason again. Bobby running hard. He's out and a close play at first base.
- 8:11And the side is retired. They just got him by half a step down at first.
- 8:15As Mercer was digging for all he's worth.
- 8:18The Yankees go down 1-2-3 nothing across.
- 8:21And at the end of the top half of the first inning the score, the Yankees nothing and the Senators coming to bat.
- 8:27Here's good news for folks who use rental trucks or trailers to move their household furnishings or for miscellaneous hauling jobs.

- 9:51He gives with one more game left before hanging up that number 41 after 10 years in the Yankee organization.
- 10:00He'll go down, he'll be number one I guess in Mississippi at least for his baseball club.
- 10:06Jake I think is pretty much looking forward to that Frank Messer.
- 10:10Yes he is and Jake says there's a lot of work involved.
- 10:14He is behind a little bit right now in his football program. He'll get there late.
- 10:18It could take him two or three weeks of work. He's 18 maybe 20 hours a day just to catch up with his paperwork in there.
- 10:27But he said once he gets organized things will settle down.
- 10:32And of course he won't be in actual coaching until next spring when it's time to start working out the baseball team.
- 10:39They do work out in the fall down there but they don't play a fall schedule.
- 10:42He said they would work out without him this fall because he has to devote all his time to the football recruiting when he gets there.
- 10:48Del Unser leads off playing center field left hand batter.
- 10:52Mel Stottlemeyer winds and deals and Unser takes inside ball one.
- 10:57Unser is hitting 256.
- 11:00He went one for four last night.
- 11:03Good speed, good arm.
- 11:06He runs up to Budd and takes a strike.
- 11:09Count evens up at one and one.
- 11:13I saw this kid Unser in batting practice practice that little stroke he had last night.
- 11:17Some way he can hold the bat that he can pop the ball over the pitcher's head.
- 11:21Now of course that's in batting practice and with Stottlemeyer throwing a sinker it might be a little harder to do.
- 11:26He did pop one like that last night for his base hit.
- 11:30Swings away and pops this one up foul down the third base line. Hanson is calling for it.
- 11:35Hanson is there and he makes the catch.
- 11:37Hanson better than half way down to the plate when he pulled that one in and very well over in foul territory.
- 11:44Unser is out one down and it brings up the third baseman, Clubby Hara.
- 11:50Hara is hitting two for four in this series and on the year 224 he's been up a hundred and
- 11:59he's been in 125 games. He's been up 375 times with 84 hits.
- 12:04He's a right hand batter. Stottlemeyer winds and deals and he is just a bit high I guess.
- 12:11Looked like he had the plate.
- 12:18Lou Demuro the plate umpire holds his hand up signifying time is out.
- 12:23Nots back in as Hara is set.
- 12:25Stottlemeyer's next pitch swung on and fouled back into the upper deck.
- 12:30One ball one strike. Speaking of the upper deck I noticed Frank Howard was asked about the baseball
- 12:36operation here and he said well if I owned the ball Clubby said I think I can make it work.
- 12:40He said I'd close the upper deck and save those cleaning costs.
- 12:43Put a fence up in center field and raise the fences in right and left.
- 12:47Pitch is lined out of the right center field and Torres has to play it on a bounce.
- 12:51It's in there for the base set and Hara's on.
- 12:56Frank Howard said that he would also shorten the distance between the plate and the stands bring the
- 13:00people closer to the ball game and concentrate on trying to get 20,000 people a game to sit in here
- 13:05where they could see it.
- 13:09That's food for thought.
- 13:12Well you know you look out there people out there in those center field upper deck I'm told pay $2 for
- 13:17those seats and they are well away from the action in this ball game.
- 13:23It's a big ballpark and the fans are not that close to the action.
- 13:27They don't want to sit right on top of it.
- 13:29I'm sure they'd like to be a little closer than they are here.
- 13:33Hara at first base and Larry Bittner left hand hitter steps in.
- 13:36Throw to first base Hara gets back.
- 13:38Fully failed to play first tonight for the Yankees.
- 13:41Larry Bittner is batting 257.
- 13:43He has 43 base hits.
- 13:4715 runs batted in the runner goes the pitch is taken the throw to second base is high and he's safe.
- 13:52Jake Gibbs forces Michael into the air to take the throw and it's a stolen base.
- 13:58By Toby Ha and the pitch was taken for a strike by the left hand swinging Larry Bittner.
- 14:04So the Senators go to a running game early here and they have a runner in scoring position now with one away.
- 14:12Stolen base number 10 for Hara.
- 14:16One strike pitch swung on and missed by Bittner.
- 14:31The outfield is spread out on Bittner deep and right, deep and center.
- 14:35Quite straight away and left.
- 14:38Infield shaves him just a step or two to the first base side.
- 14:43Stretch by Stottlemyre checks the runner over the right shoulder and delivers.
- 14:46Pitch is popped up foul outside of third.
- 14:48Hanson in pursuit.
- 14:49He will not have a play.
- 14:51Ball comes down in the seats.
- 14:58No balls two strikes on Larry Bittner.
- 15:03Did Frank Howard say anything about getting some major league ballplayers when he mentioned his other ideas?
- 15:09He said there were some major league ballplayers he didn't think should go to Texas including himself.
- 15:14He'd like to stay here.
- 15:16He doesn't want to stay here but he wants to go to another ball.
- 15:18A one-two pitch.
- 15:19Hit in the air out of the left field.
- 15:21Coming hard for it is White.
- 15:22Still coming, still coming.
- 15:23On the dead run can he get a one-hand catch just in fair territory and he runs it all the way into third base.
- 15:29Roy White had to come a long way for it and got it just before he crossed the foul line and a one-hand grab.
- 15:36Frank Howard said he'd like to be treated.
- 15:38He doesn't want to go to Texas.
- 15:40He wants to play ball.
- 15:41He said he thinks he has another two or three years.
- 15:43Anyway, he wants to play with an established club and he would prefer to play with a club closer to his home in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 15:52But his feeling on this is he said let him take a young ball club down to Texas.
- 15:55Let it grow up with a new territory.
- 15:57He said don't take us.
- 15:59He said don't take me.
- 16:01Take some of the younger players down there.
- 16:03Let me go somewhere else.
- 16:07He's up here right now.
- 16:09Big man hitting 277.
- 16:11Lines the first pitch to left.
- 16:12Roy White makes a diving trap of it.
- 16:15The run scores.
- 16:16White came up rolling, holding the ball up.
- 16:19But he does not argue the call by second base umpire Jake O'Donnell who raced out there to take a look.
- 16:25White's all for it.
- 16:27Trapped it on a very short hop.
- 16:30It's a single for Howard, a run about it in.
- 16:33It's a single for Frank Howard, his 81st RBI.
- 16:37He has hit 25 home runs.
- 16:39He says he doesn't think he's had that bad a year.
- 16:41He said of course I've had better years.
- 16:43But he said a lot of people have had worse.
- 16:47Senators break on top, one to nothing as Howard drives in the run from second base with a line single to left.
- 16:52And here is Jeff Burrows, the right fielder.
- 16:54He's a right hand batter.
- 16:56Takes a pitch low, ball one.
- 16:58Burrows is hitting 237.
- 17:00Five home runs, 25 RBI's.
- 17:04He's been in only 57 ball games for the Senators.
- 17:10Alou holding on Frank Howard at first base.
- 17:13Big man takes it shortly.
- 17:14Now Alou jumps back and the pitch is swung on and missed for a strike, one and one.
- 17:19You know they're going to like Hondo down there in Texas.
- 17:24Frank Lester.
- 17:25He's Texas sized, I'll say that.
- 17:27Yeah, he's called Hondo, isn't that a Texas name?
- 17:29So.
- 17:34Next pitch here, check swing and it's over for a strike.
- 17:37Breaking ball from Stoudelmeyer, one and two.
- 17:40Senators leading one to nothing.
- 17:43The running game cashed in for the run.
- 17:46Hara single stole second and scored on Frank Howard's line single to left that was just off the glove of Roy White.
- 17:54This pitch is bounced foul down the third base line.
- 17:57In between Felipe Alou and Nellie Fox, both of them bent down, neither one came up with it.
- 18:03Now Nellie's saying that was your ball Felipe and Alou's saying, oh no, that was your ball.
- 18:16A ball and two strikes, two outs, Howard at first base.
- 18:20Stoudelmeyer comes set at the belt, kicks and deals, pitches in there for a called strike three and the side is out.
- 18:26But the Senators take the lead with one run on two base hits.
- 18:30There were no Yankees and a man left at the end of one.
- 18:33The score, Washington one and New York nothing.
- 18:37Here's news for baseball fans who can always get to the game to cheer for their favorite players.

- 19:26But do it now. Once in a season like this isn't going to last forever.
- 19:40Well, Roy White will lead off with the Yankees here in the top of the second.
- 19:44Washington has jumped off again to a lead, early lead, which they have done it seems against the Yankees
- 19:49every game that played them Frank Messer.
- 19:52It seems like they have it on the scoreboard off the early bill.
- 19:55Roy White established a new American League record when he hit his 17th sacrifice fly in this ballpark last night.
- 20:02He's up there right handed against the Southpaw Schellenbach in the first pitch to Roy.
- 20:05Curve his foul back, strike one.
- 20:07Roy White hitting 290, 18 home runs, 83 runs batted in.
- 20:12He is second to Bobby Mercer in most offensive categories.
- 20:15Leads him in one and that's in triples.
- 20:17White has seven, Bobby has six.
- 20:23Next pitch to him, another breaking pitch, hit in the air to shallow center field.
- 20:26Coming hard is Unser and the ball falls in for the base hit.
- 20:30Unser couldn't get it through to first base and he is safe in a close play.
- 20:35Roy White made a big turnaround first base and he was almost thrown out by Jeff Burrows, the right fielder.
- 20:41It was Burrows who picked the ball up after it fell in between Unser coming in
- 20:46and Ragland going back.
- 20:48Ragland gave way to Unser and Unser just couldn't get to it.
- 20:52It's a base hit for Roy White.
- 20:55Burrows grabbed that ball and fired it into first base where Bittner got it.
- 21:00Swept for the tag and White slid back just under it.
- 21:03Fully pay a little now.
- 21:05Over one last night as a pinch hitter.
- 21:07Drills one in the air foul down the right side and it is just into the seats in the first roll.
- 21:12Fully pay a little, got off to a slow start this year with the Yankees but now he's hitting 283.
- 21:19131 base hits.
- 21:21Eight home runs, 67 runs putted in.
- 21:28Fully pay his wife Beverly and the two youngsters will be leaving for their home in Atlanta.
- 21:34He bounces this one to third and it is over the head of Toby Howe.
- 21:37Out in the left field for a base hit Roy White digging for third, the throw goes into second base
- 21:42and the Yankees have runners on the corners.
- 21:46Fully pay a little, chopped that ball to the left side.
- 21:49He bounced it over Howe's head.
- 21:51He shuts up Tommy Mason going in behind Howe.
- 21:55Couldn't get it either.
- 21:56The ball bounce through into left field and Roy White running hard goes into third.
- 22:07Runners at the corners, Ron Hanson now.
- 22:10Ronnie went over four last night.
- 22:13Veteran playing for the injured Jerry Kenny.
- 22:15Swings on the first pitch, pops it up on the right side of the infield.
- 22:18This will not get the run in.
- 22:19Ragland the second baseman makes the catch.
- 22:22Back about three steps in the right field grass.
- 22:24Hanson is out and there's one away.
- 22:27At seven, the catcher for 41, Jake Gibbs.
- 22:36Jake Gibbs now.
- 22:43Jake could be playing his last game for the Yankees tonight.
- 22:49Gibbs is hitting 218 and the first pitch from the left hander is swung on and missed.
- 22:55Breaking ball, sharp breaking pitch from Schellendag.
- 23:00What the heck of a farewell present for Jake Gibbs in here against the left hander Schellendag.
- 23:04You know I saw him usual with his last at bat against Maloney.
- 23:07Maloney struck him out a couple of times.
- 23:09This pitch is lined back up the middle and it is smothered by Ragland.
- 23:13He flips to Jim Mason.
- 23:14They've got a fourth at second.
- 23:16White scores and the Yankees tie it up.
- 23:18But a fine play by Johnny Ragland as he dove to his right, smothered the ball, he came up hurt.
- 23:26The trainer running out there, he came up with the ball and flipped it to Jim Mason at second base to force Felipe Alou.
- 23:35Roy White dashed across the plate and the Yankees have tied it up.
- 23:38Ragland appears to be okay.
- 23:40He came down very hard it seems on his right shoulder.
- 23:45They're checking him over and he appears to be okay.
- 23:48Gibbs is cutted with a run batted in.
- 23:52Bill White that was quite a play by Ragland.
- 23:54That ball looked like it was going to get through on the center field.
- 23:56He went a long way behind the bag.
- 23:58Goal that and he grabbed it.
- 24:00Although he evidently hurt himself, he had enough wits about him to get the ball to Mason and he got the force out.
- 24:06That possibly saved the run because the guy would have gone on to third base.
- 24:11Okay, Gibbs is on, two are down and Gene Michael the batter hitting right handed, swings on the first pitch and drills it through it on that field base hit.
- 24:19Jake Gibbs takes second and holds on as Frank Howard throws into third.
- 24:24Gene Michael wasting no time jumping on the first base.
- 24:28And that was base hit number 101 on the season for Gene Michael.
- 24:34Talking about Gibbs getting that curve ball in the farewell.
- 24:37I remember unusual with Maloney. Maloney told all the reporters about how much he admired unusual.
- 24:43You know as a kid and seen him in high school he throws him a spitball, strikes him up first time up.
- 24:48Oh no.
- 24:49First pitch to Mel Stottlemeyer hitting the end of left field coming hard, Howard lumbering after it in foul territory, can't reach it.
- 24:57The shortstop Jim Mason was as close to the ball as was Frank Howard.
- 25:02Deep down the left field line in foul territory neither one could quite reach it and Mel Stottlemeyer is still alive.
- 25:09No balls and a strike. Gibbs goes back to second, Michael back to first.
- 25:14Stottlemeyer with a 178 batting average shows 16 base hits.
- 25:18One home run, 11 runs batted in.
- 25:28Stottlemeyer after saves the Yankees best hitting pitcher.
- 25:33Pitch time is low for a ball, one and one.
- 25:39Stottlemeyer with 16 base hits, Dan Bonson has 12.
- 25:44Nobody is close to Mel and runs batted in as far as the pitchers are concerned.
- 25:48He gets another pitch down, low ball to it's two and one.
- 25:54Scores tied one to one, Jake Gibbs at second, Gene Michael at first.
- 26:02Two balls and a strike to Mel Stottlemeyer right hand batter.
- 26:07He swings on a bad pitch.
- 26:10And the count is two and two. Stottlemeyer was fooled on that one, swung on a pitch down in the derrick. Two balls, two strikes.
- 26:20The ball actually hit almost between the mound and own plate. Mel really was going to get that one.
- 26:27And that is mine made up. Now the two-two. Swing and a missed strike three. Stottlemeyer strikes out and that retires the side.
- 26:34The Yankees tie the ball game with one run on three hits. There were no Washington Errors and two men are left.
- 26:39At the end of one and a half the score, the Yankees won and the Senators won.
- 26:47You know how it is with that first cold beer. It goes down so easy and it tastes so good.
- 26:54Now wouldn't it be great if your second beer tasted just the same. Just as smooth and just as bright.
- 27:01And imagine getting all that first beer pleasure every beer through. Man that would be some kind of beer. And Schaefer beer is.
- 27:13Schaefer is the one beer you have when you're having more than one. Schaefer pleasure doesn't fade when your first is done.
- 27:27The most rewarding flavor in this man's world for people who are having fun. Schaefer is the one beer you have when you're having more than one.
- 27:43It's a brand new ball game here in Washington and that's the slogan here. Wasn't that the one Mr. Schaefer established when he brought Ted Williams in to manage this ball club?
- 28:01It's a brand new ball game somewhere in Arlington, Texas.
- 28:10Here is Fahey the catcher. First time I've ever seen this young man.
- 28:15He's looking for his first major league base hit and he looks at a strike right here.
- 28:22Bill Fahey about at 285 at Pitchfield in the Eastern League. Swings on the next pitch, bounces it slowly and foul down the first baseline. Strike two.
- 28:45No balls, two strikes. Fahey's been up four times. Swings on this pitch, ground ball deep and hold it short, backhanded by Michael to throw the first base to stretch.
- 28:59He's out. Gene Michael throws him out to a stretching Felipe Alou. One down and it brings up the shortstop Jim Mason.
- 29:09Mason went one for three last night. The base hit was his first in the major leagues. Left hand batter.
- 29:23They play him pretty much up the middle. Outfield is spread. The first pitch to him, taking low ball one, started to swing and checked it.
- 29:38Mason has good speed, good arm. Hits this pitch on the ground, through the hole on the left side out of the left field base hit.
- 29:46Hanson to his left, Michael to his right. Neither one could get to it. Ball just skipped through and that is base hit number three for the Senators.
- 29:53Mason is on with one gun and it brings up Tom Ragland, the second baseman. Ragland the right hand batter.
- 30:02He went one for three last night. He's been up 16 times with three base hits.
- 30:11The pitcher Jim Schellenbach will be on deck. He has not yet come out.
- 30:23First pitch to Ragland. Hits slowly on the ground right side. Alou is up with his flips to Stottlemeyer in time. They got him at first base.
- 30:31Quick reflexes by Stottlemeyer made that play. Felipe Alou came up, flipped the ball all in the same motion and almost threw it over Mel's head.
- 30:39Stottlemeyer had to reach high for it and not break stride going over to first base. Pulled the ball in and they made the play.
- 30:47That's a tough play both for Alou and for Stottlemeyer because he got the ball just as they were passing. Alou going in toward the mound. Stottlemeyer going toward first base.
- 30:56That's a pretty good ball. That's a pretty good play there.
- 30:59Jim Schellenbach steps in with a runner at second and a chance to help his own cause. Takes a pitch low and inside. He's a left hand batter.
- 31:08That's also one play a left handed first baseman I don't think could have made.
- 31:13He would have to try to go to second base because he'd have to turn completely around and then find Stottlemeyer and throw it to him. By that time the runner would have been by the bag.
- 31:21Especially a runner as fast as Ragland. Schellenbach swings and misses for a strike and the count is one and one.
- 31:27Let's see what Schellenbach has done with the bat this year. He's been up 30 times with five base hits. One run butted in.
- 31:38You say the Yankees sort of keeping Schellenbach in the league. His three wins this year have all been against New York. Three and ten is his record. One one pitch.
- 31:48Low and inside. Ball two. Two balls and one strike. They tell me really in all fairness to Schellenbach that he has pitched well against other clubs.
- 31:58He either got into no decision, lost a tough decision. It amazes me that they don't bunt much on him.
- 32:10He bounces this one off the plate. It's going to come down in foul territory. So he's still up there with a two and two count.
- 32:16Why do you say that Bill? Well because he this is professional baseball and he had a you should say well you should feel sorry for somebody.
- 32:23But he did have an accident in Puerto Rico and his left leg has been busted up and he can't move.
- 32:28And over in the other league they butted on him quite a bit and just simply can't get to the ball.
- 32:38His mobility isn't as much as it should be.
- 32:43Alright Stottlemeyer will work down again. And he hits this one slowly toward the second baseman Clark.
- 32:49He cannot run at all as he goes down to first base. Clark makes the play easily and he is out.
- 32:54Schellenbach retired. So are the Senators. No runs, a base hit, no errors and a man left.
- 32:59And at the end of two the score is New York one and Washington one.
- 33:03If you're going to move why not do it yourself with U-Haul as more than six million families do every year.

- 34:07This is Steve Fitz, your contact host.
- 34:09Follow us weeknights from eight to midnight.
- 34:11Hear on the fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectady.
- 34:16Checking base for Horace Clark.
- 34:23The Yankees present the top of the batting order as we go to the third inning.
- 34:26Horace Clark called out on strikes on three pitches in the first inning.
- 34:30Van Torey's and Mercer's.
- 34:32First pitch to Clark. Her ball is fouled back.
- 34:39Jim Schellenbach.
- 34:42Bill mentioned him being in the other league. He pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates over in the National League.
- 34:53He's upstairs, one-on-one.
- 34:55You know, Frank, talking about Schellenbach, he's made an amazing recovery.
- 34:58They didn't think over there he'd ever be able to play baseball again. His leg was so badly mangled.
- 35:06He delivers high and away to Clark, and the count is two balls and one strike.
- 35:12Automobile accident after the 67th season, I believe it was.
- 35:17Who's that left-hander you pitched for the A's that had Fulio?
- 35:21Pitch is inside, ball three.
- 35:23Lou Brissy. Lou Brissy pitched with a brace on blue.
- 35:30Not too bad a pitcher.
- 35:35Three balls and a strike here to Clark.
- 35:37And this pitch is lined to center. Got it up around eye-high and out over the plate, and Horace Clark drilled it.
- 35:45That will be base set number four for the Yankees.
- 35:59Just talking about Lou Brissy, I believe it was a wound, a gunshot wound.
- 36:02That's what Phil Rizzuto said, and Phil said they used to bully him because Phil was fun on him. But that's baseball.
- 36:10Rusty Torres swings on the first pitch and fouls it back. Strike one.
- 36:15Hey, that's what I'd have to do against that left-hander. I'd have to buddy.
- 36:21They're not going to apologize after I got my first base, you know. So I'm sorry. You wouldn't do it, Phil? Don't apologize. All right.
- 36:30No balls and a strike on Torres. Rusty granted after the shortstop his first time up. Bobby Mercer is on deck. Clark takes his lead.
- 36:37The look by Schell and back in the pitch. Lined out toward left field, and Frank Hard will never get to it. It's in for the base set.
- 36:43Horace Clark trots down to second base as Howard wheels and deals at the third.
- 36:48So Torres continues his hot-hitting. Four hits in five at bat Sunday off Lowlitch in Detroit. He went two for four here last night, and now he has a base hit in two trips in this ballgame.
- 37:00Runners at first and second, and Bobby Mercer grounded out to the shortstop Mace at his first time up.
- 37:09He's done the bulk of that hitting right-handed, hasn't he, Frank? The bulk of his hitting has been done right-handed, hasn't it?
- 37:14Torres, yes.
- 37:15Yeah. Switch hitter. It's like he hits for a high average right-handed. Power left-handed.
- 37:20That's what Torres told me. He said he felt he was a better hitter right-handed, but he had more power left-handed.
- 37:26All right, Schellenbach deals here. Mercer swings on the first one, fouls it back toward the seats down the left side, deep into the lower deck.
- 37:32Frank won.
- 37:43You've got to say now, Bobby Mercer needs a base hit.
- 37:48He wants to catch Tony Olavi. He wants it the worst way in the world.
- 37:54Schellenbach's on one time. Here it comes. He squares to butt and takes the bat away from a high pitch, a ball, one and one.
- 38:03Down at third base, Toby Hauer plays him about a step back from the infield grass and wide of the line.
- 38:08The shortstop Mason and the second baseman Ragland are up the middle, hoping for the double play.
- 38:14Over at first base, Bittner is deep. The runner's edge away in the pitch.
- 38:19Her ball is wide right at Bittner. He throws to second safe.
- 38:24Clark got back. Larry Bittner grabs Mercer's line drive. And there's one down.
- 38:32Bittner didn't waste an instant. He fired that ball across to Mason, the shortstop at second.
- 38:36But Morris Clark alertly got back. And there's one away. Mercer hit the ball right on the nose, but right at Bittner.
- 38:48Bobby now hitting 330. Roy White steps in, single at center field leading off the second.
- 38:54He hit a fly ball that fell in. And he takes a fast ball, low ball one.
- 39:00White popped one that dropped in between Unser and Ragland.
- 39:04He went to third base on Felipe Alou's base hit and scored as Jake Gibbs rounded into a fourth.
- 39:13The pitch time. Strike, runner high on the inside part of the plate, one and one.
- 39:22Roy White, one of the Yankees, will be spending the offseason and winter months in the New York area.
- 39:27Will soon be moving into a new home in Wayne, New Jersey.
- 39:31One-one delivery. Curve ball is hit high and deep out toward left center field.
- 39:35Cruising over there is Unser. He is under it. Clark is tagged at second base, makes Unser's throw.
- 39:40And the throw would have been right on the money, cut off by the shortstop Mason and Clark goes back.
- 39:46First baseman, Felipe Alou.
- 39:48Two down. Runners at first and second and Felipe Alou the batter.
- 39:53Alou chops one over the head of Harrod third in the second inning.
- 39:59Schumann back once another baseball and gets it.
- 40:07This is only the 15th strike for Jim Schumann back this year.
- 40:11It's been used as both a starter and reliever.
- 40:17Come set at the bow and deals, Alou takes low. Fastball, ball one.
- 40:26Baltimore now leads Boston one to nothing at the end of five innings.
- 40:341-0 pitch. Low again, ball two.
- 40:39Right here the score is tied. Yankees one and the Senators one in the top half of the third.
- 40:44Two on with two gone. Clark at second, Torrey's at first.
- 40:54Schumann back, shakes off a sign given by Bill Fahey, gets another one and delivers.
- 40:59Foul back and the count will be two balls and one strike.
- 41:08Scoreboard has it one and one. Played on by Lou DiMuro trying to get him to direct it.
- 41:19Two and one pitch will be coming to Felipe Alou. Schumann back into the belt.
- 41:24Kicks and deals, fastball is bounced this time to the shortstop. Mason's got it, goes to Ragland.
- 41:29They have the force on Torrey's and the side is retired.
- 41:33Mason to Ragland to force Torrey's and for the Yankees no runs, two hits.
- 41:37There were no Senator errors and two men left.
- 41:39At the end of the top half of the third inning it's still the Yankees one and the Washington Senators one.
- 41:46I close the room, close the room. You think I forget that this is a mighty fight.
- 41:56But sometimes I really, really don't give a fuck. I close the room, close the room. I close the room, close the room.
- 42:10Busy man on the go, busy man high and low. Busy man on the job, busy man to show. Busy man on the way, busy man running low.
- 42:24Arco Supreme, great gasoline. You may only get a little more mileage on it, but sometimes a little more is enough. Arco Supreme, great gasoline. Arco Supreme.
- 42:44The Washington Senators have the common airbounding order coming up here in the lower half of the third.
- 42:55Del Unser, Toby Howard and Larry Bittner.
- 42:58Unser popped up in foul territory to Ron Hanson his first time up and Hanson comes in on the grass to play the left hand hitter tight.
- 43:10Stottlemyre Wines in his first pitch. Swung on and missed strike one.
- 43:18Yankees with one run on five hits. The Senators one run on three hits.
- 43:25Upfield plays him just a step to the left side. He lines this one right at Clark. He's got it.
- 43:31Morris Clark moved a step to his right, pulled in the line drive and there's one away.
- 43:39And now the third baseman, Toby Harris. Harris played most of the season at shortstop for the Senators.
- 43:47Well now they're giving him a look at third base.
- 43:51I think Frankie looks a lot more aggressive with the bat than he has at any time that I've seen him this year.
- 43:57He's getting ahead of that bat out real good for Washington.
- 44:02Alright he drilled a base hit to right field in the first inning. Takes high and away ball one. Then he stole second and came in to score the run on Frank Howard's base hit to left.
- 44:14He hasn't, he isn't hitting much for average but he's stinging the ball now.
- 44:20He takes the stride but not the swing and it's called ball two. Stottlemyre and Gibbs both wonder why.
- 44:29Two balls and no strikes. One out, nobody on. Stottlemyre working again. Here's a pitch, bunted down the third baseline.
- 44:34It's going to be trouble. Stottlemyre's up with it.
- 44:36It goes past the loop. The ball bounces up and the fan is after it. He can't get to it.
- 44:41Now Torres in from right field grabs the ball over behind first base.
- 44:47And out into second base.
- 44:50Toby Harris. He'll get a base hit and an error will be charged to Stottlemyre.
- 44:57Melwood off the mound to the third baseline. Picked the ball up barehanded.
- 45:01Hurryed his throw to first base and threw it past Felipe Alou.
- 45:07Rusty Torres really hustled on that play. That ball was nowhere near right field territory.
- 45:12It was just up the line from the first base dugout and Torres was the first man to get to the ball.
- 45:18Eric could have gone on to third base but he really slid into second base and by the time he got up he had no chance to move over to third.
- 45:28All the Senators have a runner in scoring position.
- 45:31And Larry Bittner the batter flied out the left his first time up. He's a left hand hitter.
- 45:36White comes in a few steps in left field.
- 45:40Swings on the first pitch line, drive base hit into left center. That will get the run home.
- 45:45The ball gets past Bobby Mercer all the way to the fence. Bittner running hard around second.
- 45:50On his way to third, Mercer's throw in to Dean Michael the juxtap raced out to meet it.
- 45:55And Larry Bittner is in at third base.
- 45:59We'll see how they score it. The ball went right through Bobby Mercer in left center field and rolled to the fence.
- 46:08It will be a single, a run batted in and Bobby Mercer will be charged with a two base error in center field allowing Bittner to go to third.
- 46:19The Washington Senators now lead 2-1 and the batter is Frank Holler.
- 46:30The error charged to Mercer is his fifth of the year.
- 46:36Holler drove home a run in the first inning with a single to left.
- 46:40The pitch gone, swung out in line to left field. That's going to be in for the base hit.
- 46:44On from third base comes Bittner and the Senators now lead 3-1. Holler has his second run batted in.
- 46:58A 3-1 ball game.
- 47:02Hard on at first base with one out and the batter is Jeff Burrows who was called out on strikes in the first inning.
- 47:15Burrows the right hand batter.
- 47:18The Yankees will get the ball bound up.
- 47:24Frank is called on the inside corner.
- 47:29The Yankees need a win tonight to assure themselves that no work is on a 500 season.
- 47:35They have 180 and lost 80.
- 47:40That's pick the Burrows, swing and a miss on a fastball strike two.
- 47:44Left hander Alan Foster is up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 47:54You hear the fans here, a noisy group as they start kicking their feet, clapping their hands.
- 48:01They want more runs across the plate for their Senators.
- 48:050-2 pitches inside. A ball and two strikes.
- 48:13Big sign out here last night proclaim the new ball club should be called the Dallas Ducks.
- 48:20They're calling them the lame duck ball club right now.
- 48:241-2 pitch. It's deep to left center field. Roy White is there now, makes the catch.
- 48:31And Frank Howard thought there were two outs. He's going to be doubled up.
- 48:34Gene Michael has the ball, throws over to first base and Frank Howard thinking there were two outs running all the way is easily doubled up at first.
- 48:43That retires the side but the Senators have taken the lead. Score that play on the double play incidentally.
- 48:50White to Michael to Alou or 7-6-3.
- 48:55The Senators come up with two runs on three hits. There were two Yankee errors and nobody left on base.
- 49:00At the end of three the score, the Washington Senators three runs, six hits and no errors.
- 49:05The New York Yankees one run, five hits and two errors.
- 49:11We'll take a look at other scores for you right now.
- 49:17Milwaukee and Chicago not yet underway.
- 49:20This afternoon Oakland beat Kansas City 8-7 so the Oakland A's have won their 101st ball game.
- 49:27The winning pitcher Bob Locker's 7-2 working in relief. The loser Ted Abernathy 4-6.
- 49:34Home runs in the ball game Bob Oliver had two for Kansas City and Paul Schall had one but Oakland won it 8-7.
- 49:43Tonight Baltimore leads Boston 1-0 at the end of 5-1-1 on a home run by Brooks Robinson his 20th.
- 49:49Mike Garman pitching for the Red Sox. Jackson started for Baltimore Tom Dukes relieved in the sixth inning.
- 49:56Minnesota shutout California 1-0 as the young hard-throwing Burt Blyron climbed above the 500 mark 16-15.
- 50:04Right the loser 16-17 the only run a homer by Rick Renick his first of the year.
- 50:10And we'll cover other scores for you as we go along but right now we're ready for the fourth inning and to tell you all about it here's Phil Rizzuto.
- 50:17Hi Frank Metsa thank you very much.
- 50:21Ronnie Hanson who popped his second base his first time up is up for the Yankees they trail 3-1.
- 50:27Schellenbach's pitch is high and outside.
- 50:32One ball one strike.
- 50:34Phil at the end of one and a half it's Cleveland 1 and Detroit nothing.
- 50:37Mickey Lowlich going for his 26th win and Vince Colbert pitching for Cleveland.
- 50:42There's a line drive foul ball down the left field line off the wall.
- 50:46Well the Yankees made sure Lowlich didn't win his 26 when they beat him 3-2 out there in Detroit behind Fritz Peterson.
- 50:54Clubs now like to knock off those top pitches and top clubs.
- 51:03A ball and two strikes on Ronnie Hanson a left-handed Jim Schellenbach delivers a line drive one-handed by the shortstop.
- 51:12Mason Yankees hitting that ball on the nose but not having very good direction one away.
- 51:18Jake Gibbs who was robbed of a base hit his first time up on a diving sliding backhand grab by the youngster at second base Tom Ragland.
- 51:26He flipped it to the shortstop for a force play saved a big inning that the Yankees might have had.
- 51:37Jim Schellenbach who's staying in the big leagues because he can beat the Yankees sends in a strike on the first pitch to Jake Gibbs.
- 51:47A lot of ball players have stayed in the big leagues because they can hit maybe one pitcher or one club very well or a pitcher pitches very well against just one club.
- 51:55There's strike two nothing in two.
- 52:05Schellenbach back in a hurry curve bounce down the first base line through and out to right field.
- 52:11Gibbs is around first base and then comes back as Burroughs fires the ball in and that'll be a base hit for Jake Gibbs right under the glove of the first baseman Larry Bittner.
- 52:24That brings up Gene Michael who lined a single left field his first time up.
- 52:30And it is leading three to one. Boy they have really had the Yankees number this year.
- 52:39One out in a third is Toby Harrah the pitch to Michael is a curve hit in the air to center field on to digging hard coming in he's under and now one hands the ball bluffs the throw to first and Gibbs goes back.
- 52:50Hunter a fine defensive center fielder. Two men out here is Mel Staudelmeyer Mel struck out his first time up.
- 53:07Gibbs at first with two men out. Normally Mel hits very well down here in the nation's capital as a foul off the plate hit Mel in the hip strike one.
- 53:20I realize I was going to say if I could didn't realize how upset Big Frank Howard is and the idea of the senators moving out of here.
- 53:26We're talking about that earlier he wants to be traded. He doesn't want to go to Texas.
- 53:31He wants to be traded to a contender to go out on top.
- 53:37Schellenbach's curve is on the inside corner strike to call.
- 53:47He could be a big hero down there I don't know the dimensions of the fences in the ballpark down there.
- 53:54I've pitched just outside a ball and two strikes but normally when they build a team in the minor leagues they don't make them to be there have been a couple of exceptions.
- 54:03I remember the one the old Baltimore club used to play in before they moved into the new park.
- 54:09I don't think it had any fence change up is in their strike three called Staudelmeyer called out second time Mel has been struck out.
- 54:18The Yankees no runs ahead no errors and a man left and if you end up three and a half it's Washington three and the Yankees one.
- 54:36The village blacksmith was one of the men who built America.
- 54:40He shot many a horse forged many a plow and built many a mighty thirst a more than one beer thirst.
- 54:47The kind of thirst that took more than one cold beer to satisfy and that's where Schaeffer came in.
- 54:54We built a beer for the men who built America.
- 54:58We started practicing on more than one beer thirst back before most brewers even started brewing and practice makes perfect.
- 55:08Today Schaeffer has the unmatched quality of flavor that never fades.
- 55:12Schaeffer is made for the more than one beer man.
- 55:15Always has been always will be.
- 55:18Schaeffer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 55:32I understand fellas the new ballpark or the ballpark down in Arlington Texas is a fairly new ballpark.
- 55:38Yes absolutely.
- 55:41And they have worked together all three mayors from Dallas Fort Worth and Arlington.
- 55:48And it's been a real community project.
- 55:51There go getters down there.
- 55:54Bill Fahey bounced the shortest first time up.
- 55:56Michael made an exceptionally fine play on the left hand.
- 55:59There's a swing and a miss strike one.
- 56:08He had some interesting comments.
- 56:10He wondered why the fans and the big shots in the Washington area didn't start this long ago.
- 56:15They drive to keep the senators here.
- 56:19They waited until short decided to leave and then all the complaints started coming in.
- 56:25One on one the count.
- 56:28Kurt bounce slowly to second base clock comes in short hops it throws the first in time and there's one away.
- 56:35You know all the noise in the background tonight is pop luck night here at our stadium in the nation's capital and everything that's left over there giving away I saw them give away order grab baseball bat panty hose.
- 56:50Cap helmet. Good night for the kids almost every kid here is going to walk away with something. Jim Mason single left his first time up takes a curve inside strike one.
- 57:08You hear that pounding with a bat. Mel's next pitch on the inside corner strike to call.
- 57:23So Mel quickly ahead of Jim Mason that's the sign from Jake it and his pitch swing and a miss and he swung when the ball was in gives his glove he was looking for something didn't get it and was completely full.
- 57:38Second strike out Jim in a round and now the better time raglan that'll my head him right off the hands is bad splitting half and it is soft roller to fully bail who flipped him out.
- 57:54Two out nobody on three to one the senators lead we're in the bottom of the fourth that'll my pitch is a little low ball one.
- 58:11Mel Rocks back Kirby checked it and it's a little bit low ball to do another. We got another pretty good crowd here tonight surprising me and tomorrow radio and television and newspapers are clamoring to fill this ballpark
- 58:28and they might just do it a grounded a third Hanson has it on one hop fires over to first and so for Raglan and the senators in the bottom of the fourth three up three down and at the end of four full innings it's Washington three the Yankees one.

- 59:47Well I'm with Bobby all the way I'm the kind of guy that would like to try anything once, but not drugs.
- 59:54No sir.
- 59:57Clock has struck out single a center as the Yankees try to tie this ballgame up a trail three to one Toby Harrah way in at third base.
- 1:00:04First pitch is a change up law ball one.
- 1:00:09How are really playing clock shallow.
- 1:00:12Are it the ball fairly well down there and he has himself a base hit bounces on the plate and all the way back on the screen. Two balls no strikes
- 1:00:30on deck rusty Torres
- 1:00:34showing backs pitches right down the middle strike call to a month play clock straight away in the outfield.
- 1:00:47The two one delivery on the outside corner two balls two strikes are his steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:00:56Now back in count is even
- 1:01:08to delivery ground ball the fair at our back up as it fires the first he's got a good arm and there's one of
- 1:01:16the best in the world and now rusty Torres bounce the short and line the single left field. He is red hot with that bat.
- 1:01:31Young man thought he was going to get an early vacation they called him up to play in the mayor's trophy game and Ralph I did not expect to use him anymore
- 1:01:38Bobby Mercer was injured they call him up he looks so good he's going to look and give him a good look takes a pitch outside ball one
- 1:01:54the pitch is a curve low ball to
- 1:02:10the two delivery change a bounce high a big hop to the shortstop the throw to first and it gets off the glove a bit no nonchalant at it.
- 1:02:19He takes Torres but rusty did not make the turn that's an error charge to bit now an easy play and he was stretching a little too far as the ball took off
- 1:02:30and nonchalant at that catch and went right off the tip of his glove bouncing back. So Bittner is charged with an error and a bad enough Bobby Mercer Bobby has just
- 1:02:39missed two base hits thrown out on a very close play by the shortstop in the first inning lined hard to the first baseman in the third one out.
- 1:02:56Torres at first stretch by Schellenbach curve just misses outside ball one on deck Roy White Schellenbach comes to the belt curve is low ball to to another.
- 1:03:25Bittner now moves in back a rusty Torres down at first base got to protect against the line drive hit by Bobby Mercer the two delivery curve low ball three three and nothing.
- 1:03:45I told you Bobby now 0 for 2 Bobby now hitting 330.
- 1:03:56He cannot afford to make out any more times at bat if he wants to catch a lever that's a strike right down the middle.
- 1:04:06Trails Tony Oliver by seven points a race for the batting crown in the American League three balls to strike one out senators lead three to one top of the fifth left hander sets pitch to Mercer
- 1:04:21low ball four and Bobby's on Torres moves to second Mercer to first. That's the first walk by Schellenbach and it's the New York Yankee baseball network report for station identification.
- 1:04:35This is W.G.Y. radio 81 Schenectady New York.
- 1:04:46You have some karate experts in the next group.
- 1:04:52And boy that's a tough sport.
- 1:04:54I was messing around with one.
- 1:04:57Boy he almost broke my arm. They are strong strong fingers.
- 1:05:10The pitch is low and the count is even at one a month.
- 1:05:16People are not always what they appear. No, that's right.
- 1:05:20I mean you can be very fragile looking and if you take that karate muscles of steel.
- 1:05:29The pitch is inside two balls and a strike so the Yankees threatening now.
- 1:05:34What is that person second while they trail by two runs here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:05:39Roy White the batter and Felipe Lou on deck.
- 1:05:51Torres leads off second Mercer off first.
- 1:05:55The stretch and the curve low and inside ball three.
- 1:05:59So Schellenbach who's had perfect control up to this inning just walk Mercer has a 3-1 count on Roy White.
- 1:06:08Yankees would love to finish over 500. They've got to win the next two games to do that.
- 1:06:15The pitch on the outside corner Roy had started for first base thought it was ball four.
- 1:06:20Lifts his head high in the air.
- 1:06:23Now has a little chat with the playdump fire.
- 1:06:26But it's a full count three and two.
- 1:06:33A karate expert just came in here and I thought he was going to give me a shot in the back of the neck.
- 1:06:41The runners go and the pitch is low.
- 1:06:44Ball four and the bases are loaded.
- 1:06:55The bases are loaded.
- 1:07:00White at first, Mercer at second, Torres at third and Felipe Lou who's single left and bounce the short will be the batter.
- 1:07:14Well the Yankees with a good chance now.
- 1:07:20Schellenbach gets the sign.
- 1:07:24Lindblad and Pena loosening up for the Senators a left hander and a right hander. A curve is bounced right into the Yankee dugout.
- 1:07:30Strike one.
- 1:07:43All three runners leading away Yankees with good speed on the bases.
- 1:07:49Curve line back the middle of base hit. This will tie it up. Torres scores. Here comes Mercer. He'll score.
- 1:07:54The throw to second and White just does get back in time.
- 1:07:58So Felipe Lou coming through with another clutch base hit.
- 1:08:03Two more RBIs for Felipe.
- 1:08:06As Torres and Mercer score in the ball game it's time three three.
- 1:08:15Well fill back early in the year when Felipe Lou was not hitting the ball that well and hitting a lot of shots that were being caught.
- 1:08:21A lot of folks were beginning to wonder but now he has 69 runs about it in.
- 1:08:26He'll be up around 286.
- 1:08:30That he will and he'll be right up to his lifetime average close to 290.
- 1:08:38Ron Hanson has popped a second in line hard to short. Roy White at second. Felipe Lou at first. Only one out.
- 1:08:45Yankees have bounced back with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score.
- 1:08:51Schellenbach sets. White's going. He had a delayed start and the ball is fouled off.
- 1:08:55Roy started then stopped as Raglin started a run over from second base and then took off again.
- 1:09:01Felipe Lou is not running.
- 1:09:06Well the count is one and one. Hanson swung at the pitch and just did nub it foul.
- 1:09:10Would have been a good pitch for White to steal on it with an off speed pitch.
- 1:09:16Felipe right now batting 285.
- 1:09:21Now Felipe gets a big lead at first. White off second. Foul back off the screen.
- 1:09:27Ball and two strikes. On deck Jake Gibbs.
- 1:09:38Yankees have three runs on seven hits. Senators three runs on six hits. Yankees have made two errors and Washington one.
- 1:09:52Schellenbach gets the sign. The one two pitch change up outside and the count is evened at two and two.
- 1:10:17Schellenbach checks Roy White. His curve line drive just foul outside of third and Hanson split the bat on that one.
- 1:10:24The curve in on his hand. Count holds at two and two but Ronnie has to go back for a new bat.
- 1:10:36Hanson walking all the way back to the dugout.
- 1:10:40Now running back to the batter's box. Yankees three, Senators three, top of the fifth.
- 1:10:49Only one out. Yankees have run at that first and second.
- 1:11:00Schellenbach gets the sign from Fahey. Comes to the belt. Delivers he held up on a change up and Schellenbach said where was the pitch?
- 1:11:12On fire set inside and it's a full count three and two and I will watch for Alou and White. See if they'll be running on a three two count.
- 1:11:30Now both runners leading away. They're going and the ball is lined up. Base hit for left. White will score easily. Alou will go to third easily and the Yankees now lead four to three.
- 1:11:46Sid Hudson the pitching coach is coming out of the center of the dugout. Going a three two pitch and the runners going Hanson hit a bullet between third and short out the left field.
- 1:12:01Yes he wants the left hander Paul Lindblad to come in and pitch to Jake Gibbs. So that will be all for Jim Schellenbach.
- 1:12:16The error by the first baseman certainly did not help him here in the fifth inning. But the balls have been hit pretty well. He's walked a couple of men and two sharp singles by Alou and Hanson have put the Yankees out in front.
- 1:12:29So Jim Schellenbach in pitching four and one third innings has allowed four runs eight hits. Walked only let's see. Walked two men and he struck out three.
- 1:12:50So as Lindblad the left hander comes in let's take a look at some other scores for you quickly. Still nothing out of Sox Park in Chicago where the Brewers are visiting.
- 1:13:00This afternoon Oakland beat Kansas City eight to seven. The Oakland A's have now won one hundred and one ball games.
- 1:13:07The Baltimore Orioles if they can hold on to a one to nothing lead will win their one hundred and first I believe Bill King.
- 1:13:17So the two winners in the American League will not go into the American League Championship Series with identical records however because Baltimore has four games that were rained out that will not be made up.
- 1:13:32Oakland has I believe only one and that was against Baltimore.
- 1:13:38But nonetheless that should be a very very interesting series. The National League has not yet been determined. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in but who's it going to be the Dodgers or the Giants.
- 1:13:48We'll know probably after tonight. Minnesota blank California one to nothing. Minnesota got only three base hits of Clyde Wright of California but one was a home run by Rick Renick his first of the year and that was the only scoring in that ballgame.
- 1:14:05Bert Blylevin got the win. Cleveland leads Detroit two to nothing at the end of three innings as Mickey Lowlitz pitching for Detroit is trying to win number 26 is opposed by Vince Colbert.
- 1:14:21Mickey Lowlitz tonight has a chance to win the strikeout title in the American League as he invited a blue both had three hundred and one before Lowlitz started that ballgame tonight I got a bet that Lowlitz will get at least one.
- 1:14:37Baltimore one to nothing over Boston at the end of seven and a half playing over in Baltimore Mike Garmin a good looking youngster pitching that ballgame for Boston.
- 1:14:45Jackson Dukes and now what for Baltimore the only run so far Brooks Robinson's 20th home run in the National League the Cubs and Montreal scoreless at the end of one and a half and the games on the West Coast not yet underway.
- 1:14:57All right. Linblad is ready to pitch to Jake Gibbs and back to Phil Rizzuto.
- 1:15:01All right Frank and there's still only one out. Yankees have a little third and Hanson at first.
- 1:15:07They lead four to three stretch by Linblad pitch to Jake as a curve is swinging a missed strike one.
- 1:15:14Linblad has won seven lost for good earned run average two point eight eight.
- 1:15:19This is his 50th game.
- 1:15:26All right Linblad and it's up jam here the infields back and double play depth.
- 1:15:31It's the Jake occur bounce to first base throw to second for one back to first no double play and another run score.
- 1:15:39So that's a second run batted into the night for Jake Gibbs and both on ground balls that he bounced in a fourth place.
- 1:15:46Jake does have a single in between. He's one for three.
- 1:15:49That run is charged to shell and back for the Yankees are now out in front five to three and the batter Jean Michael a single left and fly to center.
- 1:16:00I thought that was going to come to the plate the ball was not hit hard enough actually to double a left hand batter.
- 1:16:15Stretch by Linblad pitches a little bit high ball one.
- 1:16:20So Felipe Lou is driven into runs and one and Jake Gibbs to the Yankees.
- 1:16:30Now there are two men out.
- 1:16:34Curve is in their good curve ball by Linblad one on one the count.
- 1:16:49Gibbs leads away another curve it is bad strike to one ball two strikes.
- 1:16:55Jean was trying to get his bat out of the way and it just ticked it.
- 1:17:04One ball two strikes two up.
- 1:17:15The left hander stretches fastball line to left center for a base hit.
- 1:17:20Gibbs is around second base he'll go to third answer Bob was the ball how it up with it goes underhand into the shortstop who cuts it off.
- 1:17:28And Jean Michael comes up with his second base hit for the Yankees.
- 1:17:33Their ninth base hit gives us a third Michael at first and now Mel Salomar Mel's been up twice struck out both times.
- 1:17:47The Yankees have their hitting shoes on here in the fifth inning.
- 1:17:54Well with a chance to pick up another run.
- 1:17:58Two out runners at first and third pitch by Linblad swing and a miss at a curve strike one.
- 1:18:18Michael leads off first Gibbs off third.
- 1:18:22Here bounce slowly to third base Harrah has to wait for it.
- 1:18:28Fires to first in time.
- 1:18:31They come up with four runs on three bases there was one error and two men left.
- 1:18:37And at the end of four and a half is the Yankees five the Senators three.
- 1:18:41Here's good news for folks who use rental trucks or trailers to move their household furnishings or for miscellaneous hauling jobs.

- 1:19:44Paul Linblad had a brief tenure in this ballgame two thirds of an inning because Bernie Allen now will come out and pinch hit for him to lead off the bottom half of the fifth inning against Mel Stuttenmeyer and now with a five to three lead.
- 1:19:57This stage of the ballgame still can be pretty tough.
- 1:20:00It could be and of course this Bernie Allen.
- 1:20:03Then exceptionally well against the Yankees when he's playing and when he's pinch hitting.
- 1:20:11Well it took a little time to get a pebble out of his shoe.
- 1:20:14Still warming up with Jake.
- 1:20:19They still Mel Stuttenmeyer and Jake Gibbs have developed a very close friendship over the years.
- 1:20:24Their careers are paralleled greatly.
- 1:20:26They were together two years I believe in Richmond came up to the Yankees have been together here and have become close personal friends a friendship that I'm sure will hold even though Jake goes down to Mississippi gives up professional baseball and
- 1:20:39Mel Stuttenmeyer of course will stay around and continue to be one of the better right handers in the American League.
- 1:20:44No doubt about that.
- 1:20:45I'm sure Mel will get down and visit Jake probably on his way to Florida for next spring.
- 1:20:51The first pitch to Bernie Allen is low.
- 1:20:54The Yankees banded around last inning and our Bernie Allen batting for Linblad takes another curve inside ball two to an up.
- 1:21:09It'll be Allen on Sir and Howard Bernie Allen sitting to 68 he's always tough against the Yankees.
- 1:21:14And as a curve over strike one two and one.
- 1:21:18And he is outstanding football player in his college days quarterback he fouls one back upstairs and out of play.
- 1:21:28Even the counter to and to regular second baseman for the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:21:38Before coming to Washington.
- 1:21:44Two balls two strikes.
- 1:21:48Pitch by Stuttenmeyer low and inside ball three and it's a full count three and two.
- 1:22:00And not have an easy game with these senators.
- 1:22:05The pay off pitch.
- 1:22:07Swing and a miss and he went after a bad pitch.
- 1:22:10And knew it after he swung he really reached for a sinker down and away way out of the strike zone.
- 1:22:15Third strike out for Stuttenmeyer.
- 1:22:20And now Dell answer pop the third and line to second base.
- 1:22:28Hanson moves way in at third.
- 1:22:30Felipe shortens up at first base.
- 1:22:33Even Michael and Clark shorten up a couple of steps with the left hand hitting on two is very fast.
- 1:22:38Stuttenmeyer pitches over the corner strike one call.
- 1:22:52The one strike delivery foul back and out of play in the seats down and back of third base.
- 1:23:03Nothing into the count.
- 1:23:13One out nobody on Yankees five senators three bottom of the fifth.
- 1:23:19Curve lined up base hitter right field on to out in front of that curve ball.
- 1:23:23Torrey's up with it.
- 1:23:27And so the senators come up with their seventh base hit off Stuttenmeyer brings up Toby Harrow who has two of those seven hits.
- 1:23:34Single right in the first stole the base and scored on Howard single beat out a bunt went to second on Stuttenmeyer's bad throw Mel was charged with an error.
- 1:23:43Scored on a single by Bittner in the third and he's two for two.
- 1:23:55Hunter leads off first.
- 1:23:58Stuttenmeyer's pitch swing and a miss and he was trying to go to right field.
- 1:24:12Well slowing the pace down just a bit.
- 1:24:15A little holes first against Hunter.
- 1:24:25Already he throw to first answer is back.
- 1:24:38Bounced up the middle and Clark has a throw but not in time.
- 1:24:47He said very late and Toby Harrow is now three for three and a high bouncing ball over Stuttenmeyer's head.
- 1:24:54That clock came up with going to his right.
- 1:24:56He made a good throw to Michael but Hunter split and he slid very late.
- 1:25:00Almost hurt his leg almost jumped in a second base.
- 1:25:07Back now for the Senators and here is Larry Bitten flying the left single at center.
- 1:25:11He scored a run and driven in a run.
- 1:25:20Yankees out in front five to three but these Senators have been tough on the Yankees all year.
- 1:25:26Bittner a left hand batter.
- 1:25:30Mel's pitch swing and a miss strike one.
- 1:25:34He was trying to jerk one over that fence in right field.
- 1:25:37On deck big Frank Howard.
- 1:25:49Run his lead off first and second.
- 1:25:53Mel takes a long look in for the sign.
- 1:25:55Now he's got it.
- 1:25:57Check sensor delivers ground ball up the middle clock to his right backhand to go to Michael one back to first double play and a beautiful double play for the Yankees.
- 1:26:07Iris Clark turned in two sparkling defensive plays there and on that one he got the double play four six three.
- 1:26:15No runs two hits no errors and a man left and at the end of five full innings it's the Yankees five the Senators three.
- 1:26:24Did you know your car breathes well it does and there's a new gasoline at your Arco station that helps your car breathe easy.
- 1:26:31It's called Arco Supreme by helping your car breathe easy it helps solve a problem that's caused by a lot of other gasoline.
- 1:26:39Arco Supreme keeps deposits from building up in your engines breathing tubes.
- 1:26:43That's the carburetor the intake manifold and the intake valve and that's important because on valves machine to millimeters.
- 1:26:51It doesn't take much deposit to interfere with your car's breathing even a little deposit can keep valves from closing properly and cause you power loss and gas waste.
- 1:27:01A lot of deposits can mean expensive repairs like a one hundred and twenty five dollar valve job by keeping the breathing tubes of your car open.
- 1:27:09Arco Supreme keeps your car breathing easy and the easier your car breathes the more power it has and the less gas it uses.
- 1:27:17Arco Supreme is at your Arco station now it's a good thing to know about because knowing your car breathes easy should make you breathe easy too.
- 1:27:26Denny Rittleberger another left hander comes on to pitch for the Washington Senators.
- 1:27:34So Paul Lindblad pitched to three batters gave up one base hit no runs and now Rittleberger.
- 1:27:44And many more left handers as Ted Williams got out there that bullpen.
- 1:27:48Rittleberger's won three and lost one shows an earned run average of three eighteen he's had one save working out of the bullpen and this is his fifty seventh appearance of the season.
- 1:27:59So Horace Clark rusty Tories and Bobby Mercer will be up here in the sixth inning and Mercer will have to look again at a left hand pitcher.
- 1:28:08Right on a park who led off the top of the fifth inning actually Horace has led off four times now in the ballgame in the first inning in the third inning and in the fifth inning and again here in the sixth inning.
- 1:28:22Horace is one for three struck out single center and bounce the third.
- 1:28:30And he's out in front five three in the top of the sixth.
- 1:28:40Rittleberger kicks delivers high and tight ball one comes a little bit side on this left hander.
- 1:28:49And glad was straight over the top.
- 1:28:56Curve hit on the ground pass third base and let's say Clark will go for two I'm sure.
- 1:29:01Yep he's around first digging for second how it's thrown not nearly in time and Horace Clark is in there with a stand up double.
- 1:29:12Big hundo and left hander.
- 1:29:14He tries to run very hard he gives a hundred and ten percent but he just does not move too quick.
- 1:29:22That's the Yankees tenth base hit on the ball game in their first extra base hit and for Horace Clark is twenty second to bagger.
- 1:29:29All right and his rusty Torres bounce the short single left reached on an error.
- 1:29:34How was the error that started the Yankees beginning.
- 1:29:38It's too rusty hit to the right side and rusty gave himself up and Ragland froze to first they get Torrey's Torrey's went with that pitch to advance clock to third base.
- 1:29:48And I'm sure Ralph Hawkins pleased with that Frank.
- 1:29:51Yes he is that goes down and Ralph's metal bus of buses for rusty Torres and you'd have to think Bill that Torres would have an excellent chance of making this ballclub next year.
- 1:30:01Well I would say so.
- 1:30:02All right Bobby Mercer Bobby's open to thrown out on a very close play when he bounced the short in the first inning lined up first in the third and walked and scored in the fifth.
- 1:30:16Bobby's chances of leading the American League in batting slowly glimmering away dimming away the pitch to Bobby is a curve outside ball one the infield is in for the senators trying to cut off a run at the plate Yankees lead five three Bobby has ninety two runs batted in and he has scored ninety three runs this year.
- 1:30:43Well because an RBI here you're leaving it up ninety three a piece.
- 1:30:55Park leads off there little bit pitch low and outside ball to do nothing.
- 1:31:14One out clock and third left hander winds curve hit deep to right but foul Bobby way out in front of.
- 1:31:23All the things said about Bobby Mercer is certainly one of the big things Bill over the last two years Bobby struck out two hundred and three times this year he has struck out with fifty nine and that is certainly a mark of improvement.
- 1:31:36That's a big plus.
- 1:31:39To have that real outstanding year when you're striking out so often some players are able to do it.
- 1:31:54Well who struck out a lot but had such a fantastic record the late great Babe Ruth.
- 1:32:09Three and one on Mercer Bobby will be hitting away if it's near the plate.
- 1:32:13He takes it low ball for so Mercer walks for the second time.
- 1:32:19The Yankee baseball network we pause for station identification.
- 1:32:27This is W.G.Y. radio 81 Schenectady New York.
- 1:32:38I'd run right now with runners at first and third and Roy who broke the American League record last night for sacrifice flies getting his 17th has a chance for another one here the pitch but he hits the ground at a second Raglan flips to the shortstop one back to first.
- 1:32:52Dave had first and the Yankees get another run that time Ragman could have stepped on second base and thrown a first he elected to go to the shortstop where I had come quite a ways playing white in the hole.
- 1:33:08He decided for a run batted in Clark scored and the Yankees now lead six to three.
- 1:33:19The way a loop single twice and bounce the short. Well he pays driven into tonight. Well why did first Mr. Felipe foul over toward the center to dug out and in the dugout strike one.
- 1:33:40Ronnie Hanson on deck.
- 1:33:48He's got his eyes on tape one on one.
- 1:33:56That Baltimore they shut out the Red Sox one and up.
- 1:34:08Pitch to Felipe swing and a miss on a weird looking pitch that time.
- 1:34:18They way out in front of all in two strikes.
- 1:34:30And it sets curve just inside two and two.
- 1:34:44Two balls two strikes two out.
- 1:34:50He's going good job the pitchers filed at the plate though Felipe had to protect the plate with two strikes on him.
- 1:35:00So white has to come back.
- 1:35:06Frank that Alex Johnson won a big case against the California Angels going to get all that back pay less the fines he has to pay.
- 1:35:16You know what I you know what was funny to me.
- 1:35:20The way it is the pitch to Felipe line drive one hopper to the shortstop he flips to the second base. Have to talk about a little later on when we come back.
- 1:35:28But the Yankees pick up another big run on just one base it nowhere is in a man left.
- 1:35:34And the score now at the end of five and a half Yankee six senators three.
- 1:35:50One day in 1840 a three master schooner sailed into New York.
- 1:35:56On board was a young man from what's large Germany.
- 1:36:01He set sail with just a dollar in his pocket and an old family recipe for a new kind of beer.
- 1:36:07His name was Maximilian Schaefer and the beer he introduced to America was Schaefer lager beer.
- 1:36:13It was aged or lager for many weeks to give it a unique lightness and quality.
- 1:36:20Today Schaefer is still unique with flavor that never fades first frosty glass to last.
- 1:36:27The one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:36:41Well Alex Johnson in addition to getting his money Bill says he wants to play baseball again.
- 1:36:45I was happy to hear that Frank.
- 1:36:47But what I was saying that in the article when Alex Johnson said that he was ready to play again.
- 1:36:54He said he had gone to the psychiatrist and he also said I could teach those psychiatrists a thing or two.
- 1:37:00They try to read my mind and nobody can read my mind.
- 1:37:03I know what I want to do and I do it.
- 1:37:05But he said that before after they made their decision.
- 1:37:08After they made the decision.
- 1:37:12That's what leads me to believe he knows what he wants to do and does it.
- 1:37:15His big Frank Howard he's single twice and driven in two runs takes a pitch outside ball one.
- 1:37:22We all know that Alex Johnson has a talent.
- 1:37:24He certainly has a talent for baseball and I hope that he puts it all to use and plays for a ball.
- 1:37:29I would like to see that there's a ground ball down the first base line.
- 1:37:32Lotta English Felipe picks it up and steps on first for the out.
- 1:37:39It was strange that lefty Phillips said he only gave 65 percent the year he won the batting crowd.
- 1:37:46If he only gave 65 percent led the American League in batting imagine if he did give out 100 percent.
- 1:37:56I Jeff Burrows has struck out and fly it into a double play.
- 1:38:03Donald Myers curve a little low ball one Yankees six senators three bottom of the six curve outside ball two to nothing.
- 1:38:30The two delivery inside ball three three nothing.
- 1:38:44The three delivery is right in there Mel Lated right in there three and one.
- 1:38:59Strike two call so Burrows was taking all the way.
- 1:39:09Full count one out nobody on.
- 1:39:17Saddle my with the payoff pitch high fly right field rusty Torrey moving in under and rusty makes the catch.
- 1:39:30There are two men out.
- 1:39:31Saddle my has not walked a man and that time he was behind three and oh and still came in with three strikes.
- 1:39:37Michael making a fine play to throw him out and then bounce the second.
- 1:39:51Two men out Mel pitches on the inside corner strike one call.
- 1:40:03One strike delivery just outside one of my.
- 1:40:11They have done in four thousand and three four oh oh three.
- 1:40:18One one pitch slow curve is high to a month.
- 1:40:26Well that Hurricane Ginger has finally made up a mind and is bearing down now on the North Carolina coast and Cape Hatteras.
- 1:40:35They're going to have torrential rains tomorrow.
- 1:40:38There's a strike on the inside corner two and two.
- 1:40:42And it will affect the nation's capital on Friday and probably move up to Jersey for a little more rain.
- 1:40:48They are waterlogged already up there.
- 1:40:50The two to pitch it in the air to right field rusty Torrey digs in he's there now makes the catch up.
- 1:40:57Kid gets a quick jump on fly ball three up three down and at the end of six full innings it's Yankees six the senators three and now Frank with some scores.
- 1:41:08All right Bill Milwaukee at Chicago just underway the Brewers failed to score in the top half of the first Jimmy Slayton is pitching for Milwaukee and Wilbur Wood going for Chicago.
- 1:41:17Oakland defeated Kansas City this afternoon eight to seven.
- 1:41:20Bob Locker got the win seven and two and Ted Abernathy the loser four and six Kansas City had three home runs a pair by Bob Oliver his seventh and eighth and Paul Shaw number 11.
- 1:41:30Baltimore shutout Boston one to nothing on a five hitter by Jackson Dukes and what with Grant Jackson the starter getting the win.
- 1:41:38Mike Garman was the loser for Boston and he pitched a five hitter.
- 1:41:42Minnesota shutout California one to nothing Burt Blylevin getting his 16th win and Rick Lenick providing the game's only run with his first homer of the year.
- 1:41:50Cleveland leads Detroit two to one at the end of four lowly to get Colbert in the National League Montreal three in Chicago two at the end of three innings Billy Williams has homered for the Cubs his 27th.
- 1:42:00Milk Pappa supposing Steve Ranko Houston at Los Angeles and San Francisco at San Diego will be later starts.
- 1:42:08So that's a rundown another scores right here the Yankees have six runs 10 hits with two hours and Washington three runs eight hits and one error.
- 1:42:18And ready to step in right now with the play by play through the last three innings of this ballgame ladies and gentlemen here is Bill White.
- 1:42:26Hi Frank Ronnie had some lead off with the Yankees Ronnie's one for three.
- 1:42:31With an RBI he's popped a second line the shortstop and single left driving in a run in the fifth inning.
- 1:42:42Curveball driven foul that feel way back there.
- 1:42:47The mezzanine bounces out.
- 1:42:51Riddle burger ahead now no balls in a strike.
- 1:42:54Yankees lead six three we're in the seventh.
- 1:42:59On deck Jake Gibbs little burger looks in and just catch your face pumps and deals curveball Hanson lines at the right center field after it is the right fielder Burrows he catches up with it.
- 1:43:14One away.
- 1:43:18Hanson hit the ball hard. I can't get the ball hard as last three times up he's lying to the shortstop single left and he hit that ball hard in the right center field but Burrows caught up with it.
- 1:43:30One out here's Gibbs.
- 1:43:33Jake's only one for three but he's driven into runs.
- 1:43:40Big batting left handed against left hander left hander riddle burger then he's ready.
- 1:43:48That's Paul's high on deck Gene Michael.
- 1:43:56A play Gibbs to pull one old pitch curveball swung on and missed all the other strike zone.
- 1:44:04Burrows hugging the line in right field Hunter straight away in center.
- 1:44:11So is Howard and left.
- 1:44:13Here's the one one pitch to give sidearm fastballs line the left field Frank Howard's after it he has a room now backs up a bit and grabs it for the second out.
- 1:44:22Gibbs lines the Howard and left field and that'll bring in the stick gene Mike. He's two for three to single both the left field.
- 1:44:34He'll bat right handed against the riddle burger.
- 1:44:38For a while as though the senator Jinx would continue the Yankees picked up four runs in the fifth.
- 1:44:45Michael takes a ball inside take a five to three lead they added one more last inning and they lead six three here top of the seventh.
- 1:44:56One old pitch to Michael change up gets the inside corner call strike one and one else.

- 1:45:15Let's see and foul territory. He grabs it.

- 1:46:58Stottle Myer looking for victory number 16 Mason's one for two single and he struck out that's left handed lines a base hit the right field fast Clark.
- 1:47:07Torres boxes and Mason holds the first base the kids now two for three.
- 1:47:14Cut on Stottle Myer's first pitch and aligned it in the hole between a Lou and Clark.
- 1:47:20Face it number nine for Washington and Tom Ragland steps in he's over to he's bounced to the first baseman he's bounced the third ragland that's right handed.
- 1:47:30Everybody down here talking so much about the Washington Redskins I say Redskins all the time and this town is alive with Redskin Tom.
- 1:47:40Stottle Myer comes to the belt he checks Mason deals bounce the shortstop should be to Michael in over the clock for one back to first off the bag but alone picks it up and stays on the bag and a double play 64 to 32 outs now here in the seven.
- 1:47:55And Don Mincher has been announced as a battler for Rittleberger.
- 1:48:05Stottle Myer out of trouble as he gets ragland to bounce into two and we're looking now at Don Mincher a big left handed hitting first baseman of course remember I think that last time he pinched it against the Yankees with the bases loaded in the Yankee Stadium.
- 1:48:20Grand Slam Yes sir.
- 1:48:25A chance at a Grand Slam right here though.
- 1:48:27Nobody on two outs.
- 1:48:29For the last half the seventh Yankees lead six three.
- 1:48:38Mentor is leading this team.
- 1:48:40The Washington Senators and hitting
- 1:48:45thick left handers batting 280.
- 1:48:47Our deals to him popped up and short center field Mercer's in Michael's out Michael's in there and then he grabs it with one handed and short center field that's a third out for the senators as mentor batting for Rittleberger pops to Michael for Washington in the seventh no runs on one hit no Yankee errors and nobody left on base at the end of seven full the Yankees six senators three.

- 1:50:13So like Casey Cox is going to be the new pitcher for Washington.
- 1:50:19He will be the fourth pitcher on the mound for the Senator selling back started.
- 1:50:24Lynn glad I came on Danny Rittle burger and Fox and glad and Rittle burger to left handers they got Mercer.
- 1:50:31They came on and face Bobby Mercer. Now Bobby will be the fourth hitter in this inning.
- 1:50:36And tomorrow we'll lead it off the eighth and Clark Taurus and then Mercer so Mercer will get to see a left hander for the first time a right hander you'll get to see a right hander for the first time tonight.
- 1:50:49Bobby let's see so far is over to these bounces short line to the first base and he's walked twice.
- 1:50:56He needs a base hit. Yes he does. This would be kind of a night if Bobby had had a hot night coming up five times possibly six in the ballgame.
- 1:51:06But as we said coming into the series he had to get seven for twelve to beat out Oliva.
- 1:51:12Well he needs a hit here at least to be what two for six and then he'll have to depend on jumping on somebody tomorrow for four or five.
- 1:51:19And there's a possibility that if the right hander would pitch out how they're just might lead off with him off. Yes they've done it with Willie Mays.
- 1:51:26They've done it with other ballplayers who had a shot.
- 1:51:33And Dick Boseman is scheduled to pitch he's a right hander. He's pretty tough though.
- 1:51:38Right now though it's Mel Sotomayor leading off for the Yankees as we go into the eighth Mel and the Yankees have a 6-3 lead.
- 1:51:48You see Bill for some reason Harry Walker did not pitch that kid against the Dodgers last night.
- 1:51:54He went with Wilson. Wilson right. Just a three hitter. Strong game.
- 1:51:59Pitch to Sotomayor is a called strike. Mel has been up three times. He's struck out twice. He's bounced a third.
- 1:52:06Cox a new pitcher is making his 54th appearance on the mound for Washington.
- 1:52:11Curve balls cut on a miss no balls and two strikes. Casey a big tall right hander.
- 1:52:17He's won five games and lost seven. He has seven saves.
- 1:52:23Down low a ball and two strikes on Sotomayor on deck Horace Clark.
- 1:52:34Cox does not like the sign. Now he's ready. Over the head pumps deals. Outside two and two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:52:46A few shortens up for Mel. Here's a two-two pitch. Last ball foul straight back out of play. Still two and two.
- 1:52:57Sotomayor has 11 runs batted in with one home run. See that's seven for his career right. Seven career home runs.
- 1:53:07Fine athlete. Here's a two-two pitch to Mel. Curve ball cut on and miss. Struck him out. One away in the eighth.
- 1:53:16Cox picks up his first strikeout. The first man he's faced. Here's Horace Clark. Clark's two for four with a run score.
- 1:53:23He's struck out single to center bounce a third and doubled to left field. He scored that run in the sixth.
- 1:53:32Front is the first and third. White had a chance to pick up his 18th sacrifice fly of the year. He bounced into a four-stop.
- 1:53:40Got the run in. And Roy picked up his 84th RBI of the year. Hart-Fats left-handed now.
- 1:53:48Takes a fastball on the inside corner. Call strike. Here's where the third baseman shortens up.
- 1:53:55Now Unser the center fielder moves toward left center. Howard straight away and left.
- 1:54:00Oh one pitch. Line. Basehead. Right center field. Just over Ragland's head.
- 1:54:06Halt around first. He's going to try for two. The throw. The slide. He's out.
- 1:54:11That burrow is showing a fine army. He threw that ball right on the bag and the shortstop.
- 1:54:18Mason put it on a sliding Horace Clark. That from nine to six.
- 1:54:25Give Clark a single to right field. He's thrown out nine to six. They're two outs now.
- 1:54:30Right hander Rusty Torres.
- 1:54:37Halt is let's see three for five though. That'll bring in Rusty Torres.
- 1:54:42Torres for the first time tonight will bat left-handed against Cox.
- 1:54:48Rusty's one for four. See what he does here against Casey Cox. Outfield plays him straight away.
- 1:54:55Inside a ball. They're going to try to keep the ball in on him.
- 1:54:59Rusty's bounce the shorty. Single to left. Got on on an error and scored overrun in the fifth.
- 1:55:04And he's bounced the second.
- 1:55:08One-oh pitch. Slow curve misses outside. Two balls and no strikes. Two outs. Nobody on.
- 1:55:14We're in the eighth. The Yankees lead six-three.
- 1:55:19Yankees with six runs on 11 hits. Washington three-oh-one-nine.
- 1:55:23This is bounce the short on one hop. The Mason throws the first. They've got him.
- 1:55:31So with the Yankees in the eighth, no runs on one hit. No errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:55:37At the end of seven and a half, the New York Yankees six, the Washington Senators three.

- 1:56:48And the last of the eighth, Unsure, is one for three. He's fouled out to Hanson at third.
- 1:56:53He's lined Clark at second. And he's single to right field. He bats left handed.
- 1:56:58Hanson shortens up on him at third. So does Alouette first.
- 1:57:01First pitch is bounced toward shortstop. Michael after hurrying on the grass, quick flip, got him by a step.
- 1:57:08I believe Michael. Michael can throw off balance as well as any shortstop in the American League.
- 1:57:14And make accurate throws.
- 1:57:18So Unsure, a fast runner is out by a step six to three.
- 1:57:22And Toby Harrell will step in.
- 1:57:24Harris three for three. This young fella has been swinging the bat extremely well for Washington over the last few days.
- 1:57:32In this ball game he's three for three. All singles.
- 1:57:35Scored two runs. And he's stolen the base. Stottlemeyer deals to him.
- 1:57:39Gets the outside corner with a sidearm fastball.
- 1:57:43Hanson even with the bag at third base. Upfield straight away. So is the infield.
- 1:57:49Mel looking at it gives. Humpson deals the O-1 pitch. Misses outside a slider. One and one.
- 1:57:56Larry Bittner on deck. Yankees lead six-three. We're in the last of the eight.
- 1:58:04There's a one-one pitch down here. Sidearm fastball swung on and missed.
- 1:58:09One and two. That ball's sunk.
- 1:58:15Now Hanson backs up at third.
- 1:58:21Harris stands away from the plate. He has to go in on the ball. Chokes up.
- 1:58:26One-two pitch. Sidearm fouled off.
- 1:58:29Sidearm curveball. Harrell just got a piece of it that was on the outside corner he had to reach for.
- 1:58:35Still a ball and two strikes.
- 1:58:51Mel takes a long look at Gibbs now. Over the head. Down.
- 1:58:55Sidearm slider. Rod bounced right back at Stottlemeyer. He gloves it.
- 1:58:58Goes to a Luit first base and they're two outs.
- 1:59:05Stottlemeyer has taken control of this ballgame after the third inning.
- 1:59:10Washington picked up two runs in the third to take a three-to-one lead.
- 1:59:14Yankees picked up four in the fifth and add another one in the sixth. They lead six-three.
- 1:59:18Stottlemeyer has blanked the Senators since the third inning.
- 1:59:22Here's Bittner. He bats left-handed. Takes on the outside corner. Called strike.
- 1:59:28Bittner is one for three with an RBI and he scored a run.
- 1:59:34Next pitch is down low. One and one. Two outs, nobody on. We're the last of the eight.
- 1:59:40Sellers fly to left field. Bittner has. He's single. He's also bounced into a double play.
- 1:59:45They play him straight away.
- 1:59:48One-one pitch. Bounced right back to Stottlemeyer. He knocks it down.
- 1:59:52Grabs it. Throws to Alou and that's it.
- 1:59:56For Larry Bittner and that's it for the Senators.
- 1:59:58In the eighth, three men up and three men down. They didn't get a ball out of the infield.
- 2:00:02And at the end of eighth, the New York Yankees sixth, the Washington Senators three.
- 2:00:08them band.
- 2:00:18The

- 2:00:38and see for yourself.
- 2:00:39You'll find that first cold Schaefer tastes great,
- 2:00:42but it's the second glass and the third

- 2:01:08Center fielder Bobby Mercer.
- 2:01:17Bobby Mercer now will be the batter for the Yankees.
- 2:01:21Bobby, for the first time tonight,
- 2:01:23gets a chance to hit against a right-hander.
- 2:01:25Jim Schellenbach started.
- 2:01:28Paul Lindblad came on,
- 2:01:29and Denny Riedelberger, all left-handers.
- 2:01:31Now it's Casey Cox.
- 2:01:32Cox came on last, Denny.
- 2:01:36Mercer is 0 for 2.
- 2:01:39Spouts the short, a line to the first baseman,
- 2:01:41a walk twice.
- 2:01:43Pitch to him, outside of ball.
- 2:01:45Cox knows that Bobby's trying to get this batting title,
- 2:01:50and he isn't going to give him much of anything good to hit.
- 2:01:53One old pitch now.
- 2:01:55Line drive, base hits, center field.
- 2:01:57Mercer, 1 for 3, and he keeps his hopes alive.

- 2:02:15White's added a couple of put-outs tonight,
- 2:02:18so he now has 307 without an error.
- 2:02:23Roy batting left-handed against Cox.
- 2:02:25Roy 1 for 3 with a run score.
- 2:02:27Mercer leads.
- 2:02:28Ball's down low.
- 2:02:32Roy singled and scored a run in the second inning.
- 2:02:35He flied to center, walked, bounced into a foresot,
- 2:02:38but drove in a run in the sixth.
- 2:02:40Cox comes to the belt.
- 2:02:42Pitch to White.
- 2:02:43He's doing down the right field line.
- 2:02:45It's curving foul.
- 2:02:46Just missed.
- 2:02:48Mercer all the way over third.
- 2:02:50He'll have to go back.
- 2:02:51White all the way down the first baseline will come back.
- 2:02:54That ball hook at the last moment.
- 2:02:56Missed the foul line down right field by about two feet.
- 2:02:59Jim Odom and I'm far hustling all the way down there.
- 2:03:01Had a good look at it.
- 2:03:03Wave the ball foul.
- 2:03:07Mercer just getting back to first.
- 2:03:09Yankees lead 6-3.
- 2:03:10We're in the last, top of the ninth, last inning.
- 2:03:14White chokes up just a little bit on a U-1.
- 2:03:16That's a thick-handled bat.
- 2:03:18Cox checks it. Sets.
- 2:03:20Feels a 1-1 pitch.
- 2:03:21Bounces short.
- 2:03:22Over as Mason goes, a second for one throw back.
- 2:03:24The first won't be in time.
- 2:03:27Mason shows a lot of range for young fellow Phil Rosito.
- 2:03:30He sure does.
- 2:03:31He got over there in a hurry because he was playing Roy White over near the back.
- 2:03:35And that kid, Ragland, turned that ball over real well.
- 2:03:40So with one out, White at first.
- 2:03:41And Philippe Ballou steps in.
- 2:03:43Ballou is 2-4 with two runs batted in.
- 2:03:46Philippe Joldo's two runs back in the fifth with a single.
- 2:03:53Ballou batting right-handed against Cox.
- 2:03:55White leads from first.
- 2:03:56Pitch to Ballou.
- 2:03:57Almost hits him inside.
- 2:04:01So it looks like if Solomire gets the Senators out here in the ninth,
- 2:04:06Mercer will be 1-3.
- 2:04:09And he'll still be...
- 2:04:11Oh, five and some percentage points behind Tony Oliva.
- 2:04:15Cox stretches.
- 2:04:16Pitch to Allou.
- 2:04:18Loop the right field after it is Burroughs.
- 2:04:20He's not going to get it.
- 2:04:21White will stop at second base.
- 2:04:23And Philippe now picks up his third base hit.
- 2:04:26And this is the New York Yankee baseball network.
- 2:04:29Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:04:33This is WGY.
- 2:04:35The WGY is the first team to play in the New York Yankees.
- 2:04:38This is WGY.
- 2:04:41Radio 81, Schenectady, New York.
- 2:04:51So Philippe Allou with his third base hit.
- 2:04:53He's three for five tonight.
- 2:04:55And Ron Hanson steps in.
- 2:04:58Three for five with two RBIs.
- 2:05:00Hanson has a run batted in.
- 2:05:02He is one for four.
- 2:05:06Allou now hitting 286.
- 2:05:07So he's gained three points.
- 2:05:12Philippe also has 69 runs batted in.
- 2:05:17White leads from second.
- 2:05:18Allou from first.
- 2:05:19We're in the ninth.
- 2:05:20Yankees have the lead, 6-3.
- 2:05:22Cox comes to the belt.
- 2:05:24Sets, deals, and sides.
- 2:05:28Fastball.
- 2:05:33Bednar is at first for Washington.
- 2:05:35Bagland at second.
- 2:05:37Mason at short.
- 2:05:38Carra down at third.
- 2:05:401-0 pitch to Hanson.
- 2:05:42Bounce is short.
- 2:05:43This might be two.
- 2:05:44Mason will take himself, touch a second for one.
- 2:05:46Back to first, double play.
- 2:05:47Hanson bounces into a double play.
- 2:05:506-6 to three.
- 2:05:52That's it for the Yankees in the ninth inning.
- 2:05:54No runs.
- 2:05:55Two hits.
- 2:05:56No errors.
- 2:05:57The man left on base.
- 2:05:59At the end of eight and a half, the New York Yankees sixth.
- 2:06:03Washington Senators, three.
- 2:06:05One of the nice things about owning a car is that you can travel whenever you get the urge.
- 2:06:10To the beach, the mountains, or just to the store for the daily necessities.
- 2:06:15Wherever you drive, you'll be burning gasoline.
- 2:06:18And you may be burning more than you should.
- 2:06:20One reason is that your carburetor may not be clean enough.
- 2:06:24There may be deposits that can cause your car to waste gas and cost you mileage.
- 2:06:28If this seems to be happening to you, in other words,
- 2:06:31if you're not satisfied with the performance you're getting,
- 2:06:33then you should know about Arco Supreme gasoline.
- 2:06:36Arco Supreme helps keep deposits from clogging the air passages of your engine.
- 2:06:41Deposits that can cause your car to waste gasoline and cause you, of course, to lose mileage.
- 2:06:46So if you think you're not getting the mileage you should, try a tank full of Arco Supreme.
- 2:06:51You'll find Arco Supreme gasoline at any Arco station.
- 2:06:55Now you may not get that much more mileage on it, but sometimes a little more is enough.
- 2:07:05Well, hundo, Frank Howard will lead off for Washington in the last of the night.
- 2:07:13Howard is two for three with two runs batted in.
- 2:07:16Stained with a left and drove in a run in the first inning.
- 2:07:19And the same thing in the third.
- 2:07:21Bounced the first baseman in the sixth.
- 2:07:24And he gets quite a hand.
- 2:07:26He gets a standing ovation here.
- 2:07:28Howard, one of the few Washington players, quoted in the papers.
- 2:07:32And Frank has said that he would stay here.
- 2:07:35He wants to stay here. They should keep the team here.
- 2:07:38He came up with several suggestions as to what he would do if he had this ball club.
- 2:07:45First pitch to Howard's outside of ball.
- 2:07:48Now some fans are around here with a banner. What's that banner say?
- 2:07:51Oh, man's running around the banner that says San Diego Padres.
- 2:07:56So that's part of the cheering.
- 2:07:58Howard takes too low.
- 2:08:03He gets over on our left to try to tear the stadium down.
- 2:08:05He doesn't want anybody to come here.
- 2:08:09This is hit in the air in the center field.
- 2:08:11Mercer's after it. He calls white off.
- 2:08:13Underton has it for the first half.
- 2:08:15So Howard flies the Mercer in the center field for the first time tonight.
- 2:08:21And Jeff Borrows is the hitter.
- 2:08:23Young right fielder is 0 for 3.
- 2:08:25He's struck out, flies to left and flies to right field.
- 2:08:28That's right handed.
- 2:08:36And a fan standing up on the right side behind the center to dugout.
- 2:08:40San Diego Padres.
- 2:08:42Padres banner.
- 2:08:46Sotomayor misses outside to Borrows.
- 2:08:51Melnod's agreement like the sign.
- 2:08:53One old pitch.
- 2:08:54And on the ground a shortstop.
- 2:08:55Michael takes a long hop.
- 2:08:56He goes to a Lue at first and there are two outs.
- 2:09:04That's the 12th put out.
- 2:09:06For the 12th ball that's been hit on the ground against Sotomayor.
- 2:09:09He's got a little bit of a lead.
- 2:09:11He's got a little bit of a lead against Sotomayor.
- 2:09:13He's as I said he's controlled this ballgame since the fourth inning.
- 2:09:17He has blanked Washington.
- 2:09:19Ever since the third.
- 2:09:23And he has two outs.
- 2:09:25He's a man away.
- 2:09:26Phil Fay the catcher.
- 2:09:270 for 3.
- 2:09:29He bats left handed.
- 2:09:31Lines one foul on the left side.
- 2:09:33That'll be out of play.
- 2:09:35Fay is bouncing short.
- 2:09:37Bounce a second.
- 2:09:38He flies to right field.
- 2:09:40Yankees lead 6 3.
- 2:09:44Washington has been tough on the Yankees all year.
- 2:09:46There's one.
- 2:09:48This ball's line fouled again on the right side.
- 2:09:59Senators have beaten the Yankees.
- 2:10:0211 of 16 ballgames.
- 2:10:04Here's the 0-2 pitch now.
- 2:10:06High.
- 2:10:071 and 2.
- 2:10:08Too high.
- 2:10:09Sotomayor's looking for his 23rd victory.
- 2:10:12A lifetime against Washington.
- 2:10:14And his 128th career win overall.
- 2:10:17That was 1-1-27 in the last 98.
- 2:10:19One pitch away now.
- 2:10:20The 1-2 pitch to Fay.
- 2:10:22Bounce right back to Sotomayor.
- 2:10:23This should be it.
- 2:10:24Now it goes to Alou and that's it.
- 2:10:26On a comebacker.
- 2:10:28No runs.
- 2:10:30No hits.
- 2:10:34No errors and no men left on base in the night for Washington.
- 2:10:36The New York Yankees win this ballgame.
- 2:10:386-3.
- 2:10:40And they did it.
- 2:10:42On six runs on 13 hits and two errors.
- 2:10:44Washington three runs on nine hits and one error.
- 2:10:46The winner is Sotomayor here in the background.
- 2:10:48Saw Mel was 116 games in the last 12.
- 2:10:50The loser is the Yankees.
- 2:10:52The Yankees are the Yankees.
- 2:10:54The Yankees are the Yankees.
- 2:10:56The Yankees are the Yankees.
- 2:10:58The Yankees are the Yankees.
- 2:11:00The Yankees won three games in the last 12.
- 2:11:02The loser, the left-hander, Frank Schellenbach.
- 2:11:04Who is now three and 11.
- 2:11:06So the Yankees break that Schellenbach, Jinkx.
- 2:11:08And let's see.
- 2:11:10They go now three and three against the left-hander.
- 2:11:12The backers won three ballgames all against the Yankees.
- 2:11:14Oh, he may be in trouble next year.
- 2:11:16He can't beat the Yankees.
- 2:11:18He ends up three and three.
- 2:11:20If Mel Sotomayor wins in 16.
- 2:11:22So the Yankees win this ballgame down in
- 2:11:24Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
- 2:11:26DC. I'm Bill White along with Frank Messer and Phil Rizzuto for our broadcast coordinator
- 2:11:34Bill Kane and our engineer Frank Steele saying so long from Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
- 2:11:40The score once again the New York Yankees 6 the Washington Senators 3.
