- 0:00Speaker 1: This week we're gonna look at the eight habits for
- 0:03Speaker 1: getting out of the hole. Eight habits for getting financially free.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And they're all in God's word. If you have the Bible,
- 0:10Speaker 1: open to the book of Proverbs. If you don't, if
- 0:13Speaker 1: you'll pull out your message notes and we're gonna look
- 0:15Speaker 1: at these verses from the book of Proverbs. Now each
- 0:19Speaker 1: of these habits is in order. In other words, the
- 0:23Speaker 1: first habit is the most important one. The second habit
- 0:26Speaker 1: is the second most important. The third is the third
- 0:28Speaker 1: most important. I've listed these in their order of how
- 0:32Speaker 1: you do them. Let's get right into it. Number one,
- 0:37Speaker 1: first I remember God as my source. Second, I make
- 0:40Speaker 1: the money honestly. Third, I honor God first. And fourth,
- 0:43Speaker 1: I save some of it. You say, Rick, are you
- 0:45Speaker 1: telling me to save my money before I pay my bills?
- 0:48Speaker 1: That's exactly what I'm telling you to do. because that's
- 0:51Speaker 1: what the Bible says. If you wait until all your
- 0:55Speaker 1: bills are paid off to start saving, you will never
- 0:58Speaker 1: save anything. Most people are gonna get to retirement flat
- 1:03Speaker 1: broke because they spent all their money and never saved anything.
- 1:08Speaker 1: The Bible clearly states you pay God first and you
- 1:11Speaker 1: pay yourself second and then you spend the rest on
- 1:14Speaker 1: your bills and repayment and things like that.
- 1:16Speaker 2: If you don't, you will never save anything. John D.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Rockefeller was the Bill Gates of his day. He was
- 1:24Speaker 1: the first mega millionaire in America. And they asked him
- 1:27Speaker 1: one time, said, how do you get to be a
- 1:29Speaker 1: mega millionaire? He says, the 10-10-80 principle. I tied the
- 1:33Speaker 1: first 10%, I saved the second 10%, and I live
- 1:35Speaker 1: on 80%. The 10-10-80 principle. Kay and I have practiced this, well,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and even more than that, for many, many years. And
- 1:44Speaker 1: if you do this, you're systematically putting God first and
- 1:48Speaker 1: putting your savings second, it will start to add up
- 1:51Speaker 1: over time. Did you know that God says your savings
- 1:54Speaker 1: account tests your IQ?
- 1:59Speaker 2: It shows how smart you are.
- 2:01Speaker 1: By looking at your savings, you can tell how wise
- 2:04Speaker 1: you are with your money. Notice this verse, Proverbs 24.
- 2:11Speaker 1: says this, verse 27. Develop your business first before building
- 2:16Speaker 1: your house. Did you know that verse was in the Bible?
- 2:19Speaker 1: Develop your business before building your house. What does that
- 2:23Speaker 1: verse mean? It means before you go buy the new drapes,
- 2:26Speaker 1: before you go redecorate, before you buy another piece of
- 2:31Speaker 1: furniture or art, you oughta take that money instead and
- 2:35Speaker 1: invest it in something that's gonna make money for you.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Now most of you don't have your own businesses. You know,
- 2:41Speaker 1: and these days, everybody was self-employed, everybody had their own business.
- 2:45Speaker 1: But he's saying, take your money and instead of buying
- 2:49Speaker 1: a thing with it, take it and put it in
- 2:52Speaker 1: something that makes money with it so you're investing and
- 2:55Speaker 1: you're making more money all along. Develop your business first
- 2:59Speaker 1: before building your house. See, here's the problem most people do.
- 3:03Speaker 2: They get a raise and when you get a raise,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know what you ought to do?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Keep living at the same level and put that money,
- 3:11Speaker 1: sock it away in the bank or in some investment.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Don't raise your standard living. What most people do as
- 3:16Speaker 1: soon as they get a raise, they go out and.
- 3:17Speaker 2: They buy a new car. That's the last thing you
- 3:19Speaker 2: need to do.
- 3:22Speaker 1: First place, when you buy a new car, the moment
- 3:25Speaker 1: you drive it off the lot, it's worth $ 10, 000 less
- 3:26Speaker 1: than you paid for it. but you're still gonna pay
- 3:30Speaker 1: the interest on all that even though it's depreciated. You
- 3:33Speaker 1: have just invested in the depreciating item that's gonna get
- 3:36Speaker 1: cheaper and cheaper while you're paying more and more interest
- 3:39Speaker 1: and it's going like this and that creates debt. Now,
- 3:44Speaker 1: I'm serious about this. If you will take the money
- 3:47Speaker 1: that you're spending on things, instead of going and buying
- 3:51Speaker 1: that big plasma screen that maybe you can't afford, what
- 3:54Speaker 1: you need to do is take that money and put
- 3:55Speaker 1: it in the bank and let it sit there for
- 3:57Speaker 1: years And watch, you need to get as much pleasure
- 4:01Speaker 1: out of saving as you do out of spending. A
- 4:03Speaker 1: lot of people when they get depressed, they wanna go shopping.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And there is a rush in spending money. But you
- 4:09Speaker 1: should get that attitude and change it to saving money. Say,
- 4:13Speaker 1: oh honey, I had such a great day today, what'd
- 4:14Speaker 1: you do? I put $ 50 more in the bank.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Well good. Now I'm serious about this.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So serious that in the early years, Many of you
- 4:25Speaker 1: know that I retired financially 10 years ago.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I retired at 47, why?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Because I had been saving since I was 17. I
- 4:35Speaker 1: haven't taken a salary from this church in 10 years.
- 4:38Speaker 1: In fact, 10 years ago, I added up all the
- 4:40Speaker 1: church that paid me in the first 25 years and
- 4:42Speaker 1: I gave it all back. Kay and I live off
- 4:45Speaker 1: the savings of our investments today. I retired 10 years ago.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I do this because I want to do this. I
- 4:52Speaker 1: don't do this to make money. But I had been
- 4:55Speaker 1: saving systematically over the years and it adds up.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Now, how do you do that?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Well, in the early years, we were just very, very careful.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I went out and rather than going buy a new car,
- 5:06Speaker 1: I found a car in the penny saver over in
- 5:09Speaker 1: Leisure World for $ 500.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Now that's a car.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Now I went over there and it was a 1972
- 5:18Speaker 1: Oldsmobile Cutlass and the paint was chipping on it and
- 5:22Speaker 1: the roof was all ratted out, but.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It only had 38,000 miles on it. I'm going 500 bucks, 38,000 miles,
- 5:30Speaker 2: I can put up with this.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So I bought this car for $ 500. I drove it
- 5:37Speaker 1: across the border to Tijuana and spent $ 1, 500 getting a
- 5:41Speaker 1: completely new paint job and a completely new interior.
- 5:45Speaker 2: With the fuzzy dice and everything.
- 5:49Speaker 1: The velvet Elvis in the back, and I mean the whole,
- 5:52Speaker 1: the dogs playing poker, no, I'm just kidding.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Got it all, and.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Then I drove it for six years. And after six
- 6:02Speaker 1: years I got tired of it, I gave it to
- 6:03Speaker 1: Pastor Tom.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It's true, I did.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And then Tom drove it for, I don't know, five
- 6:10Speaker 1: or six more years, and then he gave it to
- 6:12Speaker 1: another pastor. That car's somewhere out there in pastor land today.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Now that's per mile per gallon cost on that car
- 6:24Speaker 1: was minuscule compared to yours. The car I drive right
- 6:29Speaker 1: now is a 2000 Ford. I bought it 11 years
- 6:33Speaker 1: ago and we saved until I could pay cash for it.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I wasn't about to pay interest on a depreciating item.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Because that's bad stewardship. So I saved until we could
- 6:44Speaker 1: afford it and I paid cash for that car. I
- 6:47Speaker 1: haven't had a car payment in 11 years. Wouldn't you
- 6:52Speaker 1: like to have that? Okay, now, what was I doing
- 6:56Speaker 1: with that money? Putting it in savings and letting it
- 7:01Speaker 1: make more money and letting it make more money and
- 7:03Speaker 1: letting it make more money. Okay, and so this is
- 7:07Speaker 1: the principle, save money wisely. Ecclesiastes 11.2 is another advice
- 7:13Speaker 1: about investing and saving. Invest what you have in several
- 7:18Speaker 1: different places because you don't know what disasters might happen.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Now this is the principle of diversification. It says you
- 7:26Speaker 1: need to diversify. You don't put all your savings in
- 7:29Speaker 1: one place. You've heard the old expression, you don't put
- 7:31Speaker 1: all your eggs in one basket. You know where that
- 7:35Speaker 1: phrase came from? This verse right here in the Bible.
- 7:38Speaker 1: The Bible says you don't put all your eggs in
- 7:41Speaker 1: one basket. You put a little bit of your savings here,
- 7:43Speaker 1: a little bit here, a little bit here, you spread
- 7:45Speaker 1: it out. Any money manager will tell you this is
- 7:48Speaker 1: a balanced portfolio to minimize risk.
- 7:52Speaker 2: That you don't wanna have all your eggs in one basket.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You don't wanna have all your investments in one place.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You wanna spread it out to minimize the risk factor
- 8:04Speaker 1: in your investing. Now look at the next verse, Proverbs
- 8:06Speaker 1: 13 verse 11. Money that comes easily disappears quickly. But
- 8:12Speaker 1: money that is gathered little by little will grow.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Circle little by little.
- 8:18Speaker 1: This is the little by little principle of adding a
- 8:22Speaker 1: little bit every day.
- 8:23Speaker 2: You need to start saving yesterday. You say, well, I'm
- 8:27Speaker 2: in debt.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You still need to start putting money in the savings. Say,
- 8:30Speaker 1: I don't have much to save. I don't care how
- 8:33Speaker 1: much it is. It's that you start the habit, just
- 8:36Speaker 1: like the habit of tithing, that you start the habit
- 8:40Speaker 1: of saving and you do it every single week. And
- 8:44Speaker 1: you put a little, it's not the amount that matters.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I started saving for my retirement when I was 17
- 8:51Speaker 1: years old. I had just graduated from high school and
- 8:55Speaker 1: I started putting in 50 cents a week into a
- 8:59Speaker 1: retirement account at age 17.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Not many teenagers are doing that.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And then I raised it to a dollar and then
- 9:07Speaker 1: $ 5 and then $ 10 and.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Then on and on. And you know what? Over 40 years,
- 9:12Speaker 2: 40 years later, that adds up.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And that's why today I don't have to take the salary.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Because I started saving years and years and years ago
- 9:24Speaker 1: and that money has compounded and we live on the
- 9:27Speaker 1: interest of my savings.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I'm retired.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Now, you're not starting that soon, but you need to
- 9:34Speaker 1: start yesterday. And you need to start saving a little
- 9:37Speaker 1: bit every time. Pay God first, pay yourself second. That's
- 9:43Speaker 1: the way God blesses, okay? And you do that over time,
- 9:47Speaker 1: it financially, it will show up. It's not the amount,
- 9:50Speaker 1: it's the consistency. All right, number five. The fifth habit
- 9:53Speaker 1: you're gonna have to develop is keep good records.
- 9:59Speaker 2: This is the principle. of accounting.
- 10:01Speaker 1: You need to start writing down what you spend until
- 10:05Speaker 1: you absolutely know where it's all going. You gotta keep
- 10:08Speaker 1: track of your finances. If you don't keep track of it,
- 10:12Speaker 1: money just kinda walks away. The Bible says plan carefully
- 10:18Speaker 1: Notice this verse, Proverbs 21 five. Plan carefully and you
- 10:23Speaker 1: will have what? Plenty, okay look, if you don't have plenty,
- 10:27Speaker 1: you're not planning carefully. The Bible says plan carefully and
- 10:32Speaker 1: you will have plenty. If you don't have plenty, you're
- 10:34Speaker 1: not planning carefully. You don't have anybody to blame but yourself.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You say, well I had this emergency. Everybody has emergencies.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I do, you do, everybody has emergencies. Everybody gets laid
- 10:47Speaker 1: off or has difficulties. The difference between people who make
- 10:51Speaker 1: it through and those who don't are some people actually
- 10:53Speaker 1: plan to expect emergencies. If you don't expect them, of
- 10:58Speaker 1: course you're gonna be devastated by them. Plan carefully and
- 11:02Speaker 1: you will have plenty. If you act too quickly, that's
- 11:06Speaker 1: called impulse buying, you will never, never have enough.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So you gotta keep good records. Plan carefully.
- 11:14Speaker 1: You gotta know where your money's going. You ever get
- 11:16Speaker 1: to the end of the month and go, man, where
- 11:18Speaker 1: did it all go? If you ever say that, you're
- 11:22Speaker 1: already in deep doo-doo. Today I've got a quick note
- 11:38Speaker 1: from a listener in Minneapolis. His name is Bill. And
- 11:40Speaker 1: Bill wrote to me, Rick, I want to let you
- 11:42Speaker 1: know that I prayed with you this morning accepting God
- 11:46Speaker 1: into my life. Wow, that's great. Daily Hope has become
- 11:50Speaker 1: the way that I start each day listening to your podcast.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So much has changed in my life over the past year.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I had a job loss. I had a transition. I
- 11:59Speaker 1: had a divorce. My dad passed away. Cancer and my
- 12:03Speaker 1: faith all in the same year. I'm so thankful for.
- 12:08Speaker 2: All that you do.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Well, Bill, I want to tell you, I know you've
- 12:11Speaker 1: been going through some really tough times this past year,
- 12:14Speaker 1: but there's no greater news than hearing that you've accepted
- 12:17Speaker 1: Jesus into your life and the fact that God used
- 12:19Speaker 1: the Daily Hope podcast to lead you to him is
- 12:22Speaker 1: such a blessing. I want you to know that as
- 12:25Speaker 1: you continue to study God's word every day, you're going
- 12:29Speaker 1: to find that your faith is growing and you'll see
- 12:32Speaker 1: God actively working in your life. I really am as
- 12:35Speaker 1: excited today to think about what the next year is
- 12:38Speaker 1: going to bring. Year two in your life will be
- 12:40Speaker 1: very different than the last year. And to the rest
- 12:44Speaker 1: of you, all of our Daily Hope listeners, I just
- 12:47Speaker 1: want to thank you because we're able to provide the
- 12:49Speaker 1: Daily Hope podcast to people like Bill because of your
- 12:54Speaker 1: generous support. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,
- 12:56Speaker 1: thank you. Thank you for helping us share the good
- 12:59Speaker 1: news all around the world.
- 13:01Speaker 2: We love you.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And imagine what it's going to be to get to
- 13:04Speaker 1: heaven and see all these people who came to know
- 13:06Speaker 1: Christ because of your giving. God bless you.
- 13:11Speaker 2: You can join us in bringing hope to others. Just
- 13:14Speaker 2: scan the QR code or go to dailyhopetv.com.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And so you have to keep a good record in
- 13:22Speaker 1: knowing where it's going. Proverbs 27, verse 23 and 24
- 13:28Speaker 1: is another verse about keeping good records. Riches can disappear fast.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Now let me stop.
- 13:33Speaker 1: How many of you agree with that part of the verse? Yeah,
- 13:36Speaker 1: anybody wanna give a testimony? Yeah, how riches can disappear fast.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Riches can disappear fast, so watch your business interest closely.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Know the state of your flocks and herds. Now why
- 13:51Speaker 1: does it say that, know the state of your flocks
- 13:53Speaker 1: and herds? Because obviously in those days they didn't have banks.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Shoot, they didn't even have money. in these days.
- 14:00Speaker 1: In those days, all a person's wealth was tied up
- 14:03Speaker 1: in their livestock. And you could tell how rich a
- 14:07Speaker 1: person was by just looking at how many animals they have.
- 14:09Speaker 1: If you had a lot of sheep, a lot of goats,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and a lot of cattle, you were rich. If you
- 14:14Speaker 1: had a few sheep, a few goats, and a few cattle,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you were middle class. If you had no sheep, no goats,
- 14:19Speaker 1: no cattle.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You were poor.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Now he's saying here, know the condition, the state of
- 14:25Speaker 1: your flocks, Today he'd say know the state of your stocks.
- 14:30Speaker 1: He'd say know your assets, know your investments, know how
- 14:34Speaker 1: much you've got, know where it's going, know how much
- 14:37Speaker 1: you're earning on it. He said you need to keep
- 14:40Speaker 1: good records. Know the states of your flocks and your herds.
- 14:44Speaker 1: So I don't know where it all goes, then that's
- 14:46Speaker 1: a warning light to you. Now you need to know
- 14:49Speaker 1: four things, write these down. Here are the four things
- 14:51Speaker 1: you need to keep good records of. What I own,
- 14:56Speaker 1: what I owe, what I own, what I owe, what
- 15:02Speaker 1: I earn, you need to know that, and where it's going.
- 15:09Speaker 1: What I own, what I owe, what I earn, and
- 15:12Speaker 1: where it's going. If you don't know those four things,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you are already in deep trouble and don't know it.
- 15:19Speaker 1: You must keep good records. This is the principle of accounting.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Because if you don't know where it's going, it's gonna
- 15:26Speaker 1: leave without telling you. Proverbs 23 verse five says this.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Your money can be gone in a flash as if
- 15:35Speaker 1: it had grown wings and flown away.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Like an eagle. That's a pretty descriptive picture.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Your money, if you don't know where it's going, it's
- 15:45Speaker 1: just gonna fly away like an eagle. Now fortunately, the
- 15:49Speaker 1: United States government is kind enough to remind us by
- 15:52Speaker 1: putting an.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Eagle on every dollar bill.
- 15:56Speaker 1: So when you look at that dollar bill, it goes,
- 15:59Speaker 1: this one's gonna fly away unless I tell it where
- 16:02Speaker 1: to go, all right? Now that brings us to habit
- 16:06Speaker 1: number six. Habit number six is I must plan my spending.
- 16:12Speaker 1: These are one of the eight habits you must do
- 16:15Speaker 1: to get out of debt and to get financially free.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I must start planning my spending. Most of you do
- 16:21Speaker 1: not plan your spending. You don't have a plan for spending.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You just spend whatever you wanna spend, whenever you wanna
- 16:26Speaker 1: spend it, however you wanna spend it. And you do
- 16:28Speaker 1: it impulsively. Now what is planned spending? A plan for
- 16:34Speaker 1: spending is a budget. That's all a budget is. A
- 16:39Speaker 1: budget is planned spending. Everybody needs a budget. It's a
- 16:44Speaker 1: plan for how I want to spend it. A budget
- 16:47Speaker 1: is telling your money where you want it to go
- 16:50Speaker 1: rather than wondering where it went.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And you need a budget for your spending.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Telling your money where you want it to go. I
- 16:58Speaker 1: want this month, I want this much to go here,
- 17:00Speaker 1: this much to go here, this much. Rather than wondering
- 17:03Speaker 1: where it went. How do you spell relief? B-U-D-G-E-T. That's
- 17:10Speaker 1: how you spell it.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Budget. Budget.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Now Proverbs 21 verse 20 says this, stupid people spend
- 17:17Speaker 1: their money as fast as they get it.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Now this is called impulse buying.
- 17:23Speaker 1: When you see something, if you don't have a plan,
- 17:26Speaker 1: you go into a grocery store, if I don't know
- 17:28Speaker 1: what I'm gonna get in that grocery store, I'm gonna
- 17:30Speaker 1: come out with eight things I didn't plan to get. Oh,
- 17:33Speaker 1: that looks good. And especially if you're hungry, let's pull
- 17:36Speaker 1: a few of those in there. That looks good. And
- 17:38Speaker 1: then there's one word that makes impulse buying impossible to resist.
- 17:42Speaker 2: It is the word, yes, sale. You know, you're a
- 17:45Speaker 2: PhD in impulse buying. Say you knew that. Okay.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And everything in our society is designed to get you
- 17:54Speaker 1: to do impulse buying. to not think about it, to
- 17:57Speaker 1: spend emotionally, to not have a plan, to not have
- 18:00Speaker 1: a budget. And during the next two months, particularly November
- 18:04Speaker 1: and December, all of the advertisers and all of the
- 18:07Speaker 1: stores are planning to get you to impulsively buy Chia
- 18:12Speaker 1: Pets and things that you would never buy any other
- 18:15Speaker 1: time of the year.
- 18:16Speaker 2: You know, stupid, stupid stuff.
- 18:19Speaker 1: That is just a waste, but even nice stuff that
- 18:22Speaker 1: you can't afford and it's impulsively and you see it
- 18:25Speaker 1: and want it.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Now when it comes to impulse buying, hell is Costco.
- 18:36Speaker 2: At least for me.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Okay, because I go in there, well I know I
- 18:40Speaker 1: don't need 100 pounds of rice, but look at the price.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I mean, what a deal. I mean, really, what a deal.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Okay, I don't really need five gallons of shampoo, but
- 18:52Speaker 1: look at the price on it. Do you really need
- 18:55Speaker 1: a five gallon barrel of jalapenos? Two years later, it's
- 19:00Speaker 1: still taking up space in your refrigerator. The jalapenos have
- 19:04Speaker 1: turned purple, but you saved a lot on it. Again,
- 19:07Speaker 1: look at Proverbs 21, five. Plan carefully. Plan carefully, and
- 19:14Speaker 1: you'll have plenty. If you act too quickly, you'll never
- 19:17Speaker 1: have enough. And look at this next verse on your outline.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Proverbs 21, verse five says, good planning and hard work
- 19:25Speaker 1: lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts, that means looking for
- 19:30Speaker 1: the quick deal, the sale, the fast, hasty shortcuts lead
- 19:35Speaker 1: to poverty, all right? Number seven, the seventh habit I
- 19:40Speaker 1: have to develop is set up a repayment plan. If
- 19:46Speaker 1: you're in debt, you're not gonna get out of debt automatically.
- 19:49Speaker 1: You're not gonna get out of debt by accident. You're
- 19:52Speaker 1: gonna have to plan.
- 19:53Speaker 2: To get out of debt.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And the only way you're gonna get out of debt
- 19:56Speaker 1: is by setting up a scheduled repayment plan. Now we
- 20:00Speaker 1: have trained advisors in our church who can help you
- 20:03Speaker 1: do this. You didn't get into debt overnight. It took
- 20:09Speaker 1: a long time to get in the mess you're in.
- 20:11Speaker 1: And you're not gonna get out of debt overnight either.
- 20:14Speaker 1: It's gonna take probably some years. Now look at these verses.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The Bible says in Proverbs 3, 27, don't withhold repayment
- 20:22Speaker 1: of your debts. In other words, if you're in debt,
- 20:24Speaker 1: you need to be paying it down. And then the
- 20:27Speaker 1: Bible says in Romans 13, verse eight, let no debt
- 20:31Speaker 1: remain outstanding. Do you know what an outstanding debt is?
- 20:37Speaker 1: It's when you're paying interest payments only. If you have
- 20:43Speaker 1: an amount on your credit card, and you're not paying
- 20:46Speaker 1: that credit card off every month, but you're just paying
- 20:49Speaker 1: the minimum, you have an outstanding debt. And God says, ah,
- 20:54Speaker 1: no good, because you're paying interest on interest on interest,
- 20:59Speaker 1: which is dumb. And the thing you bought, you're paying
- 21:02Speaker 1: for two, three, and four, five times over because you're
- 21:05Speaker 1: paying interest on interest on interest. So an outstanding debt
- 21:09Speaker 1: is when you're not paying down the principal or you're
- 21:12Speaker 1: behind in your payments and things like that. You gotta
- 21:14Speaker 1: set up a repayment plan. Okay, number eight. The eighth habit,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and this is the bookend, is committed all to God.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I must commit to God.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It all to God.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Now remember the first habit is I must realize it
- 21:29Speaker 1: all comes from God and the eighth habit is I
- 21:32Speaker 1: must commit it all back to God. I say God,
- 21:35Speaker 1: my life, my time, my relationships, my money, my future,
- 21:38Speaker 1: my job, it's all yours and I'll do it your
- 21:41Speaker 1: way from now on. Not my way, I'm gonna do
- 21:44Speaker 1: it your way. Proverbs 16 verse three. Here's a promise.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Commit your work to the Lord and then your plans
- 21:56Speaker 1: will succeed. Circle the word succeed. I want you to
- 22:00Speaker 1: succeed in life. I don't want you to be a
- 22:02Speaker 1: failure in life. I want you to succeed spiritually and
- 22:05Speaker 1: emotionally and relationally, and I want you to succeed financially.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Commit your work to the Lord, and then your plans
- 22:13Speaker 1: will succeed. You see, the problem, your biggest problem is
- 22:18Speaker 1: not debt. No. debt is a symptom of a deeper problem.
- 22:23Speaker 1: It is a symptom of dissatisfaction and a lack of contentment.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I have to have more to be more happy. I
- 22:31Speaker 1: have to have more to be more secure. I have
- 22:33Speaker 1: to have more to be more liked. I have to
- 22:35Speaker 1: have more to be more valuable. None of that is true.
- 22:39Speaker 1: You know, the problem is not debt. The problem is
- 22:45Speaker 1: and unmanaged finances. And unmanaged finances are symptoms of an
- 22:49Speaker 1: unmanaged life. Your life is out of control. Your life
- 22:54Speaker 1: lacks discipline. And as a result, you are drifting and
- 22:58Speaker 1: you're being driven by forces, including economic forces, instead of
- 23:02Speaker 1: being directed and purpose-driven and knowing where you're going. Now,
- 23:10Speaker 1: One of the major problems we have today is that
- 23:12Speaker 1: people go out and buy things they don't need with
- 23:15Speaker 1: money they don't have. And then they spend all their
- 23:18Speaker 1: time hustling, hustling, hustling to make the payments on stuff
- 23:21Speaker 1: they didn't need with money they didn't have. And they
- 23:24Speaker 1: spend so much time trying to pay their debts off,
- 23:28Speaker 1: they don't enjoy what they've got.
- 23:30Speaker 2: They don't enjoy it at all. Look at what this
- 23:32Speaker 2: verse says here.
- 23:35Speaker 1: The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 5 that God created it
- 23:37Speaker 1: all for our enjoyment.
- 23:38Speaker 2: If God gives us wealth.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And property and he lets us enjoy them, we should
- 23:46Speaker 1: be grateful and enjoy what we have. We should enjoy
- 23:50Speaker 1: what we've got. We should enjoy what we've worked for.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It is the gift from God. All right, let's pray.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And I'm gonna ask all of you to join us.
- 24:03Speaker 1: The Bible says, When two agree as touching anything, it
- 24:06Speaker 1: shall be done. And so we've certainly got more than
- 24:09Speaker 1: two people here. We're gonna pray for miracles in the
- 24:12Speaker 1: lives of our friends, our family members here today. Father,
- 24:17Speaker 1: you know the stories behind each of these who are
- 24:19Speaker 1: standing right now, our dear brothers and sisters that we love.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Some of them are facing a major bill. Some of
- 24:26Speaker 1: them are upside down in their house. Some of them
- 24:28Speaker 1: are out of work. Some of them are barely getting by.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Some of them are just having a tough time. They've
- 24:32Speaker 1: had an illness. or some crisis that's left them with
- 24:37Speaker 1: really little. And they're struggling right now. And so together,
- 24:43Speaker 1: as a church family, we pray for our family. For
- 24:47Speaker 1: these who are standing, we pray that you replace pressure
- 24:50Speaker 1: with peace. That you replace tension with trust. Replace frustration
- 24:58Speaker 1: with freedom. And replace debt with deliverance. Help them to
- 25:06Speaker 1: get out of the hole and onto the pathway of
- 25:09Speaker 1: financial freedom. Lord, what we're asking for are miracles. Whether
- 25:15Speaker 1: the economy turns around or not, we ask for some
- 25:17Speaker 1: personal recoveries. And as we develop these eight habits together
- 25:24Speaker 1: as a church family, as we begin working on our
- 25:27Speaker 1: financial fitness, as we end this year and begin a
- 25:31Speaker 1: new one, Lord, as we do it the way you
- 25:34Speaker 1: tell us to do it, I ask that you bless
- 25:36Speaker 1: each person here.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Make some job openings appear.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Just do some miraculous things that people say, wow, God
- 25:44Speaker 1: did that. God was faithful and helped me when I
- 25:48Speaker 1: needed him most. I pray, Lord, that you reduce the
- 25:52Speaker 1: anxiety and the fear and the tension that so many
- 25:55Speaker 1: are feeling in this economy right now. And we ask
- 26:00Speaker 1: for miracles today. of jobs and miracles, of blessing, miracles
- 26:06Speaker 1: of money, miracles of turnarounds. Create some unexpected income, we pray. Father,
- 26:16Speaker 1: we're gonna be faithful to do it your way, to
- 26:19Speaker 1: follow your path. You have said, commit your work to
- 26:22Speaker 1: the Lord and then your plans will succeed. We commit these,
- 26:25Speaker 1: brothers and sisters, to you and we pray your blessing
- 26:29Speaker 1: on them and we pray this In the name of
- 26:32Speaker 1: the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Amen.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Thank you.
