Speaker 1: So right now, your phone is sitting in your pocket,
• 0:02
Speaker 1: or you know, maybe it's on the table right in
• 0:04
  Speaker 1: front of you.
• 0:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's just silently logging your exact coordinates, exactly.
• 0:08
Speaker 1: Your coordinates, your heart rate, your browsing history, all of it.
• 0:11
Speaker 2: It's literally tracking everything.
• 0:13
Speaker 1: Right. We live in this era where leaving an indestructible
• 0:16
Speaker 1: digital trail isn't really an option anymore. It's basically a
• 0:20
Speaker 1: mandatory condition of existence.
• 0:21
Speaker 2: Oh absolutely, But you have to wonder what happens when
• 0:25
Speaker 2: someone uses that exact same technology to intentionally build an
• 0:29
Speaker 2: impenetrable wall of silence.
• 0:32
Speaker 1: And that is exactly what we are getting into today.
• 0:35
Speaker 1: Welcome to the deep Dive. Our mission today is to
• 0:38
Speaker 1: well kind of pull apart a highly specific, massively impactful
• 0:43
Speaker 1: piece of true crime media.
• 0:45
Speaker 2: Right because we want to see how that exact digital
• 0:47
Speaker 2: paradox is constructed and consumed and really how it gets
• 0:50
Speaker 2: turned into a global obsession.
• 0:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, total obsession. So for you listening, we are looking
• 0:54
Speaker 1: at the crime Junkie coverage of the disappearance of Kitlin Aikins.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: She's a young woman who vanished back in December twenty fifteen.
• 1:00
Speaker 2: But and this is important, we aren't cracking open police
• 1:03
Speaker 2: files or unsealed court documents today.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: No, not at all. Our source material is entirely drawn
• 1:09
Speaker 1: from the structural metadata and the clease details provided right
• 1:12
Speaker 1: in the official Apple Podcasts listing for this specific.
• 1:17
Speaker 2: Release, right the one titled Missing Caitlin Aikins, which was
• 1:20
Speaker 2: published on March eleventh, twenty eighteen.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: And I mean, true crime is everywhere, but this specific
• 1:26
Speaker 1: case just perfectly encapsulates two completely fascinating things.
• 1:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, the chilling reality of modern digital disappearances for one, exactly.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: And also just the masterful narrative construction used by the hosts,
• 1:40
Speaker 1: Ashley Flowers and Britt Prewatt. They know exactly how to
• 1:43
Speaker 1: keep an audience engaged, they really do.
• 1:45
Speaker 2: And by isolating our focus to the exact framing of
• 1:48
Speaker 2: this audio file, you know how, is packaged by the
• 1:50
Speaker 2: audio Check Network, we get to explore something deeper.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not just about what happened to Caitlin.
• 1:55
Speaker 2: Right, It's about how conflicting human memories become a global mystery,
• 2:00
Speaker 2: the actual architecture of a mystery.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: Here, Okay, let's unpack this because we have to start
• 2:04
Speaker 1: with the foundational facts laid out in the description before
• 2:07
Speaker 1: we dive into well, the total narrative chaos that comes later.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, the chaos is definitely real with this one.
• 2:13
Speaker 1: So the text anchors us in this deeply relatable scenario.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: It's December twenty fifteen. Caitlin Aikins has an itinerary. She
• 2:21
Speaker 1: is supposed to fly from Virginia to Arizona.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: Right, Virginia to Arizona. And if you think about the
• 2:26
Speaker 2: mechanics of that specific plan, a cross country flight requires
• 2:32
Speaker 2: a highly choreographed sequence of events.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: Oh totally. It's not like just walking down.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: The street exactly. You have to secure transportation to the terminal.
• 2:39
Speaker 2: You have to navigate the ticketing.
• 2:41
Speaker 1: Area, pass through the whole tsa gauntlet.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: Right the Transportation Security administration, and then physically present a
• 2:48
Speaker 2: boarding pass at a gate. It's a very linear structured path.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: It's basically designed to move a human body from point
• 2:55
Speaker 1: A to point B under constant supervision.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: Yes, constant surveillance, which makes the single piece of digital
• 3:02
Speaker 2: communication we have in this case so incredibly maddening.
• 3:06
Speaker 1: It really is. Yeah. So Caitlin texts her mom and
• 3:09
Speaker 1: the message conveys just two pieces of information. One, she
• 3:12
Speaker 1: made it to the airport, right and two her phone
• 3:15
Speaker 1: is dying, so she will text later.
• 3:17
  Speaker 2: And that's it.
• 3:18
Speaker 1: That's it, And I just keep coming back to how
• 3:21
Speaker 1: incredibly frustratingly mundane that text message is. I mean, if
• 3:27
Speaker 1: you're listening to this, you've probably sent some variation of
• 3:31
Speaker 1: phone on one percent talk later in the last like
• 3:34
  Speaker 1: forty eight hours.
• 3:35
Speaker 2: Oh almost certainly. I mean it's battery management. It's just
• 3:37
Speaker 2: a modern administrative chore.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: Exactly. It's so normal. But my phone is dying. Text
• 3:44
Speaker 1: is basically the modern equivalent of walking into a thick
• 3:46
  Speaker 1: fog bank.
• 3:47
Speaker 2: Oh that is a really good analogy, a.
• 3:49
Speaker 1: Fog bank, right, because it just obscures everything.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, And what makes that analogy work is that a
• 3:54
Speaker 2: fog bank doesn't merely hide a person. It provides a
• 3:57
Speaker 2: rational atmospheric explanation for why you cannot them.
• 4:00
Speaker 1: Yes, it gives you an excuse for the disappearance.
• 4:02
Speaker 2: Exactly. What's fascinating here is how the concept of the
• 4:05
Speaker 2: digital footprint is completely upended. Normally, your smartphone is constantly
• 4:09
  Speaker 2: emitting a heartbeat.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: Even when it's just sitting in your pocket doing nothing.
• 4:13
Speaker 2: Right, even if you aren't actively texting, the device is
• 4:16
Speaker 2: shaking hands with local cell towers, it's pinging Wi Fi
• 4:20
Speaker 2: routers for available networks, pushing background data to servers.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: Just constantly chattering away.
• 4:26
Speaker 2: But a dead lithium ion battery severs all of that instantly.
• 4:30
Speaker 2: It creates an absolute information vacuum.
• 4:33
Speaker 1: Wait, okay, but if the goal of a potential kidnapper
• 4:37
Speaker 1: or you know, someone meeting her harm was to just
• 4:39
Speaker 1: get her off the grid, why bother sending the text
• 4:42
Speaker 1: at all? That is the big question, right, Like wouldn't
• 4:45
Speaker 1: a malicious actor just power the device down and throw
• 4:48
Speaker 1: it in a river? Why take the risk of turning
• 4:50
Speaker 1: the phone into a final flare?
• 4:51
Speaker 2: Well, because abruptly powering down a fully charged phone without
• 4:55
Speaker 2: a warning creates immediate suspicion.
• 4:57
Speaker 1: Oh, I see Yeah.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: If a loved one expects rolling updates on a travel
• 5:01
Speaker 2: day and the phone just goes straight to voicemail at
• 5:04
Speaker 2: too in the afternoon, the panic response triggers very quickly.
• 5:07
Speaker 1: The mom would instantly know something was wrong exactly. So.
• 5:10
Speaker 2: The brilliance, or I guess, the chilling calculation of the
• 5:14
Speaker 2: my phone is dying text is that it provides a logical,
• 5:18
Speaker 2: temporary alibi for the silence.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: Wow, it buys time.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: It explicitly purchases a window of unreachability.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: That is so creepy to think about.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: It is the center is establishing a narrative. They're saying,
• 5:31
Speaker 2: do not expect to hear from me, and more importantly,
• 5:34
Speaker 2: do not panic when your messages turn green or go
• 5:36
  Speaker 2: on red.
• 5:37
Speaker 1: Because you just assume the phone is dead in a
• 5:39
  Speaker 1: bag somewhere. Right.
• 5:40
Speaker 2: It masks the actual moment that disappearance occurs because the
• 5:43
Speaker 2: silence has been preemptively explained away by hardware failure.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: So Caitlin's mother isn't going to call airport security or
• 5:50
  Speaker 1: local hospitals an.
• 5:51
Speaker 2: Hour later, No, of course not. The built in delay
• 5:54
Speaker 2: prevents any immediate rescue or law enforcement mobilization.
• 5:57
Speaker 1: That completely reframes a mundane daily hand into something incredibly sinister.
• 6:02
Speaker 1: It acts as this like digital.
• 6:03
Speaker 2: Smoke screen, a perfect smoke screen.
• 6:05
Speaker 1: But this crashes headfirst into the central conflict of the
• 6:07
Speaker 1: case that's outlined in the source text. We have this
• 6:10
Speaker 1: digital claim, right. The text says she's at the airport.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: Right, the digital assertion, yeah.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: But then we are hit with the physical reality Caitlin
• 6:19
Speaker 1: never made it onto that flight to Arizona, never got
• 6:21
Speaker 1: on the plane, and she's never been seen since.
• 6:23
Speaker 2: In that contradiction, the gap between the digital assertion and
• 6:27
Speaker 2: the physical absence, that is where the investigation hits a
• 6:31
Speaker 2: massive brick wall, because.
• 6:32
Speaker 1: A text message claiming a location is completely disconnected from
• 6:36
  Speaker 1: physical verification.
• 6:38
Speaker 3: Precisely, which makes me ask, how does a human being
• 6:41
Speaker 3: just vanish at or even on the way to a
• 6:44
Speaker 3: commercial airport in twenty fifteen, It's incredibly difficult to do.
• 6:48
Speaker 1: Right, we aren't talking about a loan hiker out in
• 6:50
Speaker 1: a national park. So I'm looking at this text message
• 6:53
Speaker 1: and I just have to challenge the core assumption. Just
• 6:57
Speaker 1: because a text was sent from Caitlin's phone saying she
• 7:00
Speaker 1: was at the airport, does that actually mean she was
• 7:02
Speaker 1: physically standing in the terminal well?
• 7:04
Speaker 2: The situational context of a modern airport makes that first
• 7:07
Speaker 2: option that she was actually there almost mathematically impossible to
• 7:11
Speaker 2: reconcile with a complete disappearance.
• 7:13
Speaker 1: Because of all the cameras.
• 7:14
Speaker 2: Think about the surveillance mechanisms woven into the architecture of
• 7:18
Speaker 2: an airport. By twenty fifteen, the perimeter is saturated with
• 7:22
Speaker 2: automated license plate readers.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they log every single car that drives.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: Through exactly the drop off zones have high definition, overlapping
• 7:30
Speaker 2: camera coverage. They are designed to monitor unattended baggage or
• 7:34
  Speaker 2: suspicious vehicles.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: And inside it's even worse or better, depending on how
• 7:39
Speaker 1: you look at it.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: Right the ticketing counters, the security checkpoints, the concourses, they
• 7:44
Speaker 2: operate as a modern pinopticon.
• 7:46
Speaker 1: You literally cannot move thirty feet without crossing into a
• 7:49
Speaker 1: new camera's field of.
• 7:50
Speaker 2: View exactly, Let alone the digital breadcrumbs of your phone
• 7:54
Speaker 2: pinging the airport's public Wi Fi infrastructure as you walk
• 7:57
  Speaker 2: past the shops.
• 7:58
Speaker 1: Even if the battery was dying, I would still try
• 8:00
Speaker 1: to connect right up until it died.
• 8:02
Speaker 2: Yes, and that doesn't even touch on the timestamp scanning
• 8:05
Speaker 2: of a physical boarding pass, which logs your progression through
• 8:08
  Speaker 2: the physical checkpoints.
• 8:09
Speaker 1: So if we accept the text message as absolute truth
• 8:12
Speaker 1: that Caitlin was dropped off and entered the airport ecosystem,
• 8:15
Speaker 1: her failure to board means what it means.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: She was intercepted, coerced, or attacked within one of the
• 8:21
Speaker 2: most highly secure, heavily monitored spaces.
• 8:24
Speaker 1: In the country, which just sounds absurd.
• 8:27
Speaker 2: It does because it would mean the perpetrator managed to
• 8:30
Speaker 2: remove her from that environment without triggering a single alarm
• 8:34
Speaker 2: or leaving a trace on hundreds of cameras.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: Which pushes any logical person to the second possibility. The
• 8:40
Speaker 1: text message was a complete misdirection, right.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: And if the text is a lie, the entire geographical
• 8:46
Speaker 2: focus of the investigation shifts instantly.
• 8:49
  Speaker 1: It changes everything.
• 8:50
Speaker 2: It implies that whoever sent that message, whether Caitlin was
• 8:53
Speaker 2: forced to type it under duress or someone else had
• 8:56
Speaker 2: already taken possession of her device, was actively manipulate the timeline.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: They're pointing the police the wrong way.
• 9:03
Speaker 2: Exactly if she never arrived at the airport. The text
• 9:06
Speaker 2: is a deliberate alibi. It's meant to say, stop looking
• 9:09
Speaker 2: for me in my hometown in Virginia. I am already
• 9:11
Speaker 2: at the airport heading out of state.
• 9:13
Speaker 1: Wow. It perfectly exposes this terrifying gap between what a
• 9:18
Speaker 1: digital device claims is happening and what the physical reality
• 9:21
  Speaker 1: actually is.
• 9:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, a text message has no heartbeat.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: It doesn't offer proof of life. It only offers proof
• 9:27
  Speaker 1: of device operation.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: That's a great way to put it, and stripping away
• 9:30
Speaker 2: physical verification leaves investigators with a very fragile substitute. What
• 9:35
Speaker 2: I mean, Well, when the digital data is compromised or deceptive,
• 9:39
Speaker 2: and the physical location is totally empty. Police have to
• 9:43
Speaker 2: rely on the most faulty hardware of all.
• 9:45
Speaker 4: Oh right, the human brain, exactly human accounts. And here's
• 9:50
Speaker 4: where it gets really interesting to me. The source material
• 9:54
Speaker 4: doesn't just list the logistical failures of the flight. It
• 9:57
Speaker 4: includes this massive psychological warran for the listener.
• 10:00
Speaker 2: Yes, it explicitly warns the audience.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: It states, and I quote, the investigation into her disappearance
• 10:06
Speaker 1: will make you question everything about Caitlin's last day, and
• 10:09
Speaker 1: by the end, you won't know whose account can be trusted.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: That sentence, right there is the engine of the entire
• 10:15
  Speaker 2: true crime genre.
• 10:16
Speaker 1: It really is. It's an outright admission that the fundamental
• 10:19
Speaker 1: building blocks of the timeline are totally compromised.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: Because you start with a simple itinerary Virginia to Arizona,
• 10:26
Speaker 2: you have a text.
• 10:27
Speaker 1: Message, it seems linear, and then it devolves into this
• 10:29
Speaker 1: total racial one effect of conflicting accounts.
• 10:33
Speaker 2: Right, everyone has a different story, but let's look at
• 10:35
Speaker 2: the psychology of that.
• 10:37
Speaker 1: When we see people involved in Caitlin's last day giving
• 10:40
Speaker 1: totally different versions of events to the police or to
• 10:43
Speaker 1: these podcast hosts, are we automatically looking at malicious deception?
• 10:49
Speaker 2: Not necessarily no, right, Like.
• 10:51
Speaker 1: Is human memory just hopelessly unreliable when we try to
• 10:55
Speaker 1: retroactively apply it to a traumatic event.
• 10:57
Speaker 2: What's fascinating here is the epistemology of an investigation. Basically,
• 11:02
Speaker 2: how we know what we know?
• 11:03
  Speaker 1: Right?
• 11:04
Speaker 2: It relies heavily on understanding the degradation of memory. People
• 11:08
Speaker 2: think human memory is like a video file stored on
• 11:10
Speaker 2: a hard drive, like.
• 11:11
Speaker 1: You can just click a button and play it back.
• 11:13
Speaker 2: Perfectly, exactly, play it back with perfect fidelity. But it's not.
• 11:16
Speaker 2: It is a reconstructive process. Every single time you recall
• 11:20
Speaker 2: an event, your brain is actively rebuilding the memory.
• 11:23
Speaker 1: So it changes slightly every time you access it.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: Yes, And in doing so, it leaves the memory vulnerable
• 11:28
Speaker 2: to alteration, to suggestion, and obviously to the passage of time.
• 11:33
Speaker 1: So if investigators ask someone, hey, what time did you
• 11:35
Speaker 1: drop Kate len Off? Three days after the fact, the
• 11:39
Speaker 1: person might genuinely believe they are telling the truth when
• 11:42
Speaker 1: they say one pm.
• 11:43
Speaker 2: Even if the actual time was.
• 11:45
Speaker 1: Three pm exactly. They aren't necessarily lying. Their brain just
• 11:50
Speaker 1: messed up the time stamp.
• 11:52
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: The brain of whrror is a vacuum. It will subconsciously
• 11:56
Speaker 2: fill in missing details with plausible information just to create
• 12:00
  Speaker 2: a coherent narrative.
• 12:01
  Speaker 1: That is terrifying.
• 12:02
Speaker 2: It is in a standard day, a two hour discrepancy
• 12:05
  Speaker 2: means absolutely nothing.
• 12:06
Speaker 1: Right, who cares if you went to the grocery store.
• 12:08
Speaker 2: At one or three exactly. But in the context of
• 12:11
Speaker 2: a missing person, a two hour window is the difference
• 12:14
Speaker 2: between a rock solid alibi and the exact opportunity required
• 12:18
Speaker 2: to commit a crime.
• 12:19
Speaker 1: Wow, and the hosts of Crime Junkie, they are actively
• 12:22
Speaker 1: leveraging this psychological vulnerability, aren't they.
• 12:25
Speaker 2: Oh, completely, By telling you upfront that you won't know
• 12:28
Speaker 2: whose account can be trusted, they are framing the listener's
• 12:31
Speaker 2: experience before the audio even starts playing.
• 12:34
Speaker 1: They're essentially turning the person listening in their car or
• 12:37
Speaker 1: on a run into a juror.
• 12:39
Speaker 2: Yes, you are no longer passively receiving an informational summary.
• 12:44
Speaker 2: You are forced into an active analytical role.
• 12:47
Speaker 1: You have to sit there and weigh the credibility of
• 12:49
  Speaker 1: every person.
• 12:50
Speaker 2: Talking right, their potential motives, the memory degradation of every
• 12:54
Speaker 2: single person introduced into the narrative. The podcast isn't just
• 12:57
  Speaker 2: recounting a mystery.
• 12:59
Speaker 1: It's active constructing a puzzle out of subjective human perceptions exactly,
• 13:04
Speaker 1: which brings up a really critical point about the actual
• 13:07
Speaker 1: vessel delivering this puzzle.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: The format of the show itself.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: Yes, the metadata gives us the exact narrative architecture of
• 13:13
Speaker 1: how this story is packaged. We know it's hosted by
• 13:16
Speaker 1: Ashley Flowers and Britt Prawat under the Audio Check network.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: We know it's published at twelve fifteen am UTC on
• 13:22
Speaker 1: March twelve, twenty eighteen. But the detail that absolutely stops
• 13:26
Speaker 1: me in my tracks is the runtime.
• 13:29
Speaker 2: The length of the episode.
• 13:30
Speaker 1: It is exactly thirty two minutes long, which.
• 13:32
Speaker 2: Is incredibly tight. Condensing a multi year missing person investigation,
• 13:36
Speaker 2: complete with all those conflicting witness testimonies, police roadblocks, and
• 13:40
Speaker 2: digital forensic analysis into a thirty two minute window requires
• 13:44
  Speaker 2: ruthless narrative editing.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: It's basically a perfectly engineered short story. At that point,
• 13:49
Speaker 1: it is just look at the paradox embedded in the
• 13:51
Speaker 1: show notes. The source description explicitly stakes that the reference
• 13:56
Speaker 1: material for this episode cannot be listed in the app
• 13:59
Speaker 1: due to Apple's care character limitations.
• 14:01
Speaker 2: Right, there were too many sources to fit in the box.
• 14:03
Speaker 1: The research is so vast, the articles and case files
• 14:06
Speaker 1: are so numerous that it overflows the standard text box.
• 14:10
Speaker 1: They literally have to redirect the listener to a completely
• 14:13
Speaker 1: separate website link on the crime Junkie domain just to
• 14:16
Speaker 1: catalog the raw data.
• 14:18
Speaker 2: That's a massive amount of background information.
• 14:20
Speaker 1: Huge, and yet out of that overflowing mountain of research
• 14:25
Speaker 1: they distill the final product down to a hyper focused
• 14:28
  Speaker 1: half hour.
• 14:29
Speaker 2: This really highlights the central tension of modern media consumption
• 14:32
Speaker 2: house well. On one hand, the audience demands exhaustive research
• 14:36
  Speaker 2: to establish authority.
• 14:37
Speaker 1: Right, you want to know the hosts did their homework exactly.
• 14:40
Speaker 2: The overflowing source list acts as a credential. It proves
• 14:43
Speaker 2: to the listener that the hosts have overturned every stone
• 14:46
Speaker 2: and are dealing in facts, not just baseless speculation.
• 14:49
Speaker 1: But on the other hand, on.
• 14:51
Speaker 2: The other hand, modern audience retention is incredibly fragile, oh totally.
• 14:55
Speaker 1: Nobody wants to listen to someone read a raw police
• 14:58
Speaker 1: blodder or like a phone book of sources for six
• 15:02
  Speaker 1: hours straight.
• 15:03
Speaker 2: Right, the research must be synthesized into a highly digestible format.
• 15:07
Speaker 2: It has to respect the spatial boundaries of a modern adult's.
• 15:11
  Speaker 1: Life spatial boundaries.
• 15:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, think about it. A thirty two minute runtime is
• 15:15
Speaker 2: not an accident. It is the average length of a
• 15:18
Speaker 2: one way commute in the US. Oh wow, it fits
• 15:21
Speaker 2: exactly into a treadmill run, or the time it takes
• 15:23
Speaker 2: to fold a load of laundry.
• 15:25
Speaker 1: That is so calculated. I love it.
• 15:26
Speaker 2: Ashley and Britt are acting as strict narrative gatekeepers to
• 15:30
Speaker 2: fit all of those conflicting accounts into thirty two minutes.
• 15:33
Speaker 2: Every single sentence has to serve a structural purpose.
• 15:36
Speaker 1: You can't have pointless tangents, Like if they introduce a
• 15:39
Speaker 1: detail about a neighbor or a family member, you know
• 15:42
Speaker 1: it's going to come back around exactly.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: They curate the emmertional journey. They build suspense by deliberately
• 15:48
Speaker 2: structuring the release of information, so.
• 15:51
Speaker 1: They might hold something back just for effect.
• 15:53
Speaker 2: Yes, they might introduce a witness account, allow the listener
• 15:57
Speaker 2: to build trust in that account for say four minutes, and.
• 16:00
Speaker 1: Then bam, they dropped the conflicting piece of.
• 16:03
Speaker 2: Verpay exactly right when it achieves maximum cognitive dissonance, the
• 16:08
Speaker 2: shifting of the audience's trust, that feeling of you won't
• 16:11
Speaker 2: know whose account to trust is an orchestrated organic shift,
• 16:15
Speaker 2: meticulously paced to unfold over exactly thirty two minutes.
• 16:19
Speaker 1: That is honestly brilliant. So what does this all mean
• 16:22
Speaker 1: When you take that tightly engineered thirty two minute file
• 16:25
Speaker 1: and just blast it out into the world.
• 16:27
Speaker 2: The distribution scale is wild because.
• 16:29
Speaker 1: The scale in the metadata is genuinely staggering. Yeah, we
• 16:32
Speaker 1: are taking a hyper local, deeply intimate tragedy, a young
• 16:36
Speaker 1: woman from Virginia trying to get to Arizona, and we
• 16:39
Speaker 1: were watching it transform into a massive global phenomenon.
• 16:43
Speaker 2: The international Availability Index provided in the source material really
• 16:47
Speaker 2: demonstrates a frictionless global distribution model.
• 16:49
Speaker 1: I was scrolling through the regions and it is a
• 16:51
Speaker 1: masterclass in global reach. Africa, the Middle East, India, Asia, Pacific, Europe,
• 16:56
Speaker 1: Latin America at Caribbe, in the US, Canada, everywhere, listeners
• 16:59
Speaker 1: in Algeria, Vietnam, Mexico, Japan, Iceland, Botswana, I mean over
• 17:05
  Speaker 1: one hundred countries.
• 17:06
Speaker 2: The infrastructure of modern podcasting allows a local Virginia missing
• 17:10
Speaker 2: person's case to instantly populate on servers in Tokyo and Johannesburg.
• 17:14
Speaker 1: But the juxtaposition here is what really scrambles my brain.
• 17:17
Speaker 1: While they have this massive broadcast level international reach, the
• 17:21
Speaker 1: metadata is simultaneously begging for highly intimate, localized fan connections.
• 17:27
Speaker 2: Yes, the push for community right.
• 17:29
Speaker 1: The text promotes an ad free fan club to create
• 17:32
Speaker 1: an in group of dedicated listeners. It maps out direct
• 17:36
Speaker 1: social media engagement across Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook for
• 17:39
Speaker 1: both the show and the hosts personally.
• 17:41
Speaker 2: And then there's the phone number.
• 17:42
Speaker 1: Yes, there it is a personal phone number three one
• 17:45
Speaker 1: seven seven three three seven four eighty five, a direct
• 17:48
Speaker 1: line for fans to text Ashley Flowers to quote talk
• 17:51
Speaker 1: all things true crime and get behind the scenes updates.
• 17:54
Speaker 2: If we connect this to the bigger picture, the inclusion
• 17:57
Speaker 2: of a three seventeen area code, which geographically roots the
• 18:00
Speaker 2: host in Indiana, creates a fascinating psychological anchor.
• 18:03
Speaker 1: Because it feels like a real person cell phone exactly.
• 18:06
Speaker 2: Traditional broadcast media, like television news magazines from the nineteen
• 18:10
Speaker 2: nineties operated as a strictly one way street.
• 18:14
Speaker 1: You sit on the couch and watch.
• 18:15
Speaker 2: Right, you watch the documentary, the credits rolled, and the
• 18:18
Speaker 2: transaction was over. You were a passive consumer of information.
• 18:22
Speaker 1: You couldn't exactly text Tom Brocot to tell him your
• 18:25
Speaker 1: personal theory on a cold case.
• 18:27
Speaker 2: No, you couldn't, but exactly the opposite is happening here.
• 18:31
Speaker 2: The true crime ecosystem today demands parasocial intimacy.
• 18:35
Speaker 1: Parasocial intimacy, I like that term. Yeah.
• 18:37
Speaker 2: By offering a direct text line to the host, the
• 18:40
Speaker 2: boundary between the broadcaster and the audience completely dissolves. Listeners
• 18:45
Speaker 2: no longer feel like they are just consuming content.
• 18:47
  Speaker 1: They feel deputized.
• 18:48
Speaker 2: Exactly, they feel like part of the investigation.
• 18:51
Speaker 1: It makes you feel like you were sitting on the
• 18:52
Speaker 1: couch with Ashley and Britt untangling the timeline together over
• 18:56
Speaker 1: a cup of coffee.
• 18:57
Speaker 2: And when an audience feels like part of the investigative
• 18:59
Speaker 2: time team, their investment in the narrative just skyrockets.
• 19:03
Speaker 1: Which explains the global reach.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: Yes, that massive global availability. List proves that the psychological
• 19:10
Speaker 2: hooks use in the storytelling, the mystery of a disappearance,
• 19:14
Speaker 2: the frustration of conflicting memories, the innate human desire to
• 19:17
Speaker 2: solve a puzzle, those are completely universal.
• 19:21
Speaker 1: So a listener navigating traffic in Senegal experiences the exact
• 19:24
Speaker 1: same tension regarding Caitlyn's final text message as a listener in.
• 19:28
Speaker 2: Virginia exactly the same.
• 19:30
Speaker 1: It really is wild to pull back and look at
• 19:31
Speaker 1: the entire machinery of it. We started this deep dive
• 19:34
Speaker 1: with a single incredibly ordinary action from December twenty fifteen, a.
• 19:39
Speaker 2: Girl texting her mom about a buying phone.
• 19:41
Speaker 1: Battery right, and from there we navigated a terrifying blind
• 19:45
Speaker 1: spot between a digital claim and the physical reality of
• 19:48
  Speaker 1: airport surveillance.
• 19:49
Speaker 2: We explored how human memory degrades, turning investigative truth into
• 19:53
  Speaker 2: an epistemological nightmare.
• 19:54
Speaker 1: We dissected how Audiochuck takes an overflowing mountain of raw
• 19:57
Speaker 1: research and ruthlessly engineers it into a thirty two minute
• 20:00
  Speaker 1: suspense engine.
• 20:01
Speaker 2: And finally, we looked at how that tightly wound narrative
• 20:04
Speaker 2: is broadcast to over one hundred countries, all while using
• 20:08
Speaker 2: a local Indiana phone number to build a deeply intimate
• 20:11
  Speaker 2: global detective agency.
• 20:13
Speaker 1: It is a remarkable synthesis of technology, psychology, and narrative design.
• 20:18
Speaker 2: It really is. But as we step back from the
• 20:21
Speaker 2: specific mechanics of this crime junkie release, the text leaves
• 20:25
Speaker 2: us with a much broader and frankly incredibly unsettling implication
• 20:29
Speaker 2: regarding our own data.
• 20:31
Speaker 1: What stands out to.
• 20:32
Speaker 2: You, Well, when a person vantages, the normal flow of
• 20:35
Speaker 2: time stops for them, but their digital footprint becomes instantly frozen,
• 20:40
Speaker 2: transforming from casual communication into permanent evidence.
• 20:44
Speaker 1: Wow, yeah, it's just stuck there.
• 20:46
Speaker 2: Think about it. Millions of people sent a message today
• 20:49
Speaker 2: complaining about a low battery. They hit send, they found
• 20:52
Speaker 2: a charger, and they completely forgot the interaction ever.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: Happened, because it's meaningless to us in the moment, right.
• 20:58
Speaker 2: But the chilling reality and betted in the Caitlin Aikins case,
• 21:01
Speaker 2: is the reminder that the most ordinary, mundane throwaway message
• 21:05
Speaker 2: you send today could unexpectedly, without any warning whatsoever, become
• 21:10
Speaker 2: the final unsolvable riddle you leave behind for the world
• 21:14
  Speaker 2: to decipher.
• 21:14
Speaker 1: Well, yeah, that definitely makes you want to check the
• 21:17
Speaker 1: exact phrasing of the last message you sent, doesn't it.
• 21:19
Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us on this deep dive
