- 1:49Speaker 3: hurdling today.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I am sitting down with a man Andalucci. She is
- 2:01Speaker 4: the director of Special Projects at Woman's Health.
- 2:04Speaker 3: How are we doing, Amanda, Welcome to Hurtle.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Oh my god, thanks for having me.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Oh my god.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That's a dream.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Oh a dream. I feel like it's a dream for me.
- 2:13Speaker 4: It's always a fun moment when I get to bring
- 2:16Speaker 4: friends into the studio. I get to sit down with
- 2:20Speaker 4: my girls and make work out of it.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, nothing better, no better way to spend.
- 2:26Speaker 4: A Friday's That's what I'm talking about. So tell me
- 2:28Speaker 4: I like the level set. Once we sit.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Down here, How are you doing?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Really?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, pretty good. Actually, yeah, it's been really busy.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But I feel like I'm always saying.
- 2:41Speaker 3: That, yeah, so good.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And I would be remiss if I didn't
- 2:46Speaker 4: address liberty home opener not.
- 2:48Speaker 5: I know, I'm so excited.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Can you tell I'm in full liberty gear?
- 2:54Speaker 4: Have you always been we'll jump right into it. A
- 2:57Speaker 4: big fan of women's sports? Or has this become something
- 3:00Speaker 4: that's really come with the job description And we'll get
- 3:03Speaker 4: into that shortly.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I mean, I grew up a sports fan, so I'm
- 3:07Speaker 1: from Pittsburgh and the Steelers, of the Pirates, the Penguins
- 3:11Speaker 1: are in my blood so but those are all men's sports.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Of course, Pittsburgh has a growing women's sports landscape, but
- 3:21Speaker 1: when I was growing up, I didn't really see it,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and I think that's why I love it so much.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Now living in New York, having Gotham and the PWHL
- 3:29Speaker 1: sirens and the Liberty of course, and being in this
- 3:33Speaker 1: environment has been so amazing. I mean I've lived here
- 3:36Speaker 1: for I want to say, over fifteen years at this point,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and so you know, moving to New York changes you
- 3:43Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, and I think it made
- 3:45Speaker 1: me a women's sports fan a lot.
- 3:47Speaker 4: A lot of teams to highlight. But do we have
- 3:49Speaker 4: a favorite team.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I mean, I'm a Liberty season ticket holder, so I
- 3:54Speaker 1: have to say, I have to say them. But also
- 3:58Speaker 1: I feel like, well, I don't have to be neutral,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you know what. Like at Women's Health, I feel like
- 4:03Speaker 1: we are very open about being fans and journalists at
- 4:06Speaker 1: the same time. So I think I can I mean,
- 4:09Speaker 1: I'm wearing Liberty merch today. I think I can confidently
- 4:11Speaker 1: say I'm a big Liberty fan.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Liberty Stan, Well, we love to hear it.
- 4:15Speaker 4: And I am so inspired by everything that you do
- 4:18Speaker 4: at Women's Health. I feel like the last few years
- 4:21Speaker 4: have been a really fun time to be working at
- 4:24Speaker 4: that brand, specifically as you've amped up the coverage of
- 4:28Speaker 4: women's sports. So talk to me a little bit about
- 4:30Speaker 4: what it is that you do in your role as
- 4:33Speaker 4: Director of Special Projects.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, a title that means a lot of different things. Well,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I started at Women's Health, I would say, well, I'm
- 4:41Speaker 1: in my tenth year now and I was hired as
- 4:44Speaker 1: a social media editor and I still do that. I
- 4:47Speaker 1: run our social team a group of amazing folks who
- 4:51Speaker 1: kind of run the day to day. So I'm still
- 4:53Speaker 1: working in that capacity, but that sort of evolved also
- 4:57Speaker 1: into running our sports coverage, which it seems maybe it
- 5:00Speaker 1: would seem like they don't connect, but really, how our
- 5:03Speaker 1: sports coverage, I would say started is by posting on
- 5:06Speaker 1: social when something cool would happen during an Olympics or
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, a WNBA championship or whatever it is. Even
- 5:14Speaker 1: if we weren't doing something about it on the site,
- 5:16Speaker 1: we could still post about it on social, post photos,
- 5:18Speaker 1: post reactions, and we found that people were really excited
- 5:22Speaker 1: about that, and it was getting a ton of engagement,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and it just sort of naturally progressed into more and
- 5:26Speaker 1: more coverage and on site and on the cover of
- 5:29Speaker 1: the magazine and all the places.
- 5:30Speaker 4: In all the places, and now you are truly in
- 5:34Speaker 4: all of the places. Where was your most recent travels
- 5:38Speaker 4: to cover women's sports?
- 5:40Speaker 5: Phoenix?
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe Phoenix for the Final four.
- 5:43Speaker 4: And that is only the tip of the iceberg. I
- 5:46Speaker 4: know that you've been to Paris to cover the Olympics.
- 5:48Speaker 4: You also recently went to Milan to cover the Olympics.
- 5:51Speaker 4: When I say that out loud, can you even believe
- 5:53Speaker 4: that this is part of the work that you get
- 5:55Speaker 4: to do.
- 5:55Speaker 1: No, it's completely insane and so fun, and I'm so grateful.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm grateful that like Women's Health is willing to invest
- 6:05Speaker 1: in this coverage and that you know, I can be
- 6:10Speaker 1: a woman journalist over there, which the people might be surprised.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe they would be surprised to know
- 6:16Speaker 1: that there's not that many women's sports journalists.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, let's talk about that.
- 6:22Speaker 4: So when you go to something like the Final four,
- 6:24Speaker 4: what is the climate of the people that you are
- 6:28Speaker 4: surrounded by?
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean in the press rooms, it's a lot
- 6:32Speaker 1: of men. I mean, I would say, like in international
- 6:35Speaker 1: media you notice it a lot more and it's getting better,
- 6:39Speaker 1: but it's definitely a lot of men.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Yea.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And it's noticeable to me, especially in the questions that
- 6:47Speaker 1: are asked the way they're asked sometimes, And so that's
- 6:49Speaker 1: why I feel like it's so important for us to
- 6:51Speaker 1: be in that room and to hopefully be able to
- 6:53Speaker 1: change that narrative.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 4: So when you say the type of questions that are asked,
- 6:59Speaker 4: can we paint a picture here?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Sure? I mean you've probably seen some of the stuff
- 7:04Speaker 1: that's gone viral recently, like getting people's names wrong, or
- 7:10Speaker 1: getting the player wrong entirely, getting the position they play wrong,
- 7:13Speaker 1: getting the team they play for wrong, generally getting it wrong,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I find happens quite frequently. I there was a moment
- 7:22Speaker 1: in Paris. I was in the so after an athlete competes,
- 7:26Speaker 1: they go to something called the mix zone and they
- 7:28Speaker 1: like basically go down the line and all the reporters
- 7:30Speaker 1: are there to interview them. And I was covering women's
- 7:34Speaker 1: three on three basketball and the US they had just
- 7:38Speaker 1: won bronze, and that winning bronze in a tournament at
- 7:41Speaker 1: the Olympics is really kind of a complicated result, right,
- 7:45Speaker 1: because you had to lose a game that would have
- 7:50Speaker 1: taken you to the gold medal game. And so you're
- 7:52Speaker 1: coming off a loss and now you have to compete
- 7:54Speaker 1: for a medal and it's not the medal you wanted,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but you're still competing for a medal. And in on
- 8:00Speaker 1: three you have to do that in a matter of
- 8:01Speaker 1: like an hour, like you have to pivot like that.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And so someone came through, I want to say it
- 8:06Speaker 1: was Hayley van Lyth came through and I basically asked
- 8:11Speaker 1: her about that, like, how did you make that mental
- 8:14Speaker 1: pivot to come back and win a medal for our country?
- 8:17Speaker 1: And after she left, one of the reporters, all the
- 8:20Speaker 1: other reporters in the mix, ohone, by the way, we're
- 8:22Speaker 1: all men. And after she left, one of them like
- 8:26Speaker 1: turned to me and was like, thank you for asking
- 8:28Speaker 1: that question, because I would have asked that in a
- 8:31Speaker 1: really like disrespectful way. He was like, I just like,
- 8:34Speaker 1: wasn't really sure how to phrase what I wanted to ask,
- 8:39Speaker 1: And you knew how to talk to another woman in
- 8:43Speaker 1: a way that would get, you know, their reaction to
- 8:46Speaker 1: that experience. So I mean that just shows why it's
- 8:49Speaker 1: so important to have women in the room.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Obviously, it's so important to have women in the room,
- 8:53Speaker 4: especially when we're talking about women covering women's sports. But
- 8:57Speaker 4: speaking of which, covering women's sports wasn't a exactly where
- 9:00Speaker 4: you imagine that you would be in your career, and
- 9:03Speaker 4: it's certainly far from where you started in your career.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Talk to me a little bit about your desire to
- 9:08Speaker 4: go into entertainment journalism and how that morphed over time.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Oh, you did your research, girl, Well, do you know
- 9:15Speaker 1: what's funny? I was actually thinking about this on the
- 9:16Speaker 1: way over here. When I was in college, I worked
- 9:20Speaker 1: for our student paper and I wrote one sports story.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I wanted to write about sports. I did like a
- 9:25Speaker 1: I don't know. They needed someone to jump in and
- 9:27Speaker 1: do like a recap of a baseball game or something,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and the editor was like, I don't think this is
- 9:33Speaker 1: for you.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Yeah, like not so good.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And it didn't make me like not want to do it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I mean, of course I'm doing it now, but I
- 9:41Speaker 1: was kind of like, nah, I don't know, like I'm
- 9:43Speaker 1: going to entertainment. I mean, I always wanted to write
- 9:45Speaker 1: about music. I love celebrities. I love celebrity culture. It's
- 9:49Speaker 1: a guilty pleasure for me. So I kind of just
- 9:51Speaker 1: found my way into that world.
- 9:53Speaker 5: You know.
- 9:54Speaker 1: When I graduated, it was the era of like the
- 9:58Speaker 1: intern runs your social media, so it was very I
- 10:01Speaker 1: don't want to say easy to break into social media.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But like when I got to New York, I kind
- 10:04Speaker 1: of found my footing that way, and I was doing
- 10:07Speaker 1: that in the tabloid world, and then I would say, I,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you know, I got to women's health in twenty seventeen.
- 10:16Speaker 1: It was a very interesting time in our country, and
- 10:22Speaker 1: I really felt like, I wanted to make content that
- 10:26Speaker 1: would help not just help people, and help women and
- 10:30Speaker 1: help women navigate that time and their health and what
- 10:34Speaker 1: their rights were. And Women's Health was looking for a
- 10:38Speaker 1: social editor, so it was kind of the perfect moment
- 10:40Speaker 1: to do that. So that's kind of how I ended
- 10:43Speaker 1: up here, and then it just so happened. I mean,
- 10:45Speaker 1: Women's Health has always covered athletes in a way, you know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's very much a part of the brand, DNA, but
- 10:51Speaker 1: then I just kind of took that and.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Went nuts with it as a suggestion.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I pitched stories over and over and
- 11:00Speaker 1: over and over, and then they finally were like, Okay,
- 11:02Speaker 1: you can do it now.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You can do it now.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And when you did it, you saw, as you said before,
- 11:07Speaker 4: some really great success with it. So it was indicative that, Okay,
- 11:11Speaker 4: we see this success now, we see that there's a
- 11:13Speaker 4: little room for momentum. Let's really see what happens when
- 11:16Speaker 4: we go all in exactly. And so, as you have
- 11:20Speaker 4: now been at Women's Health for nine plus years at
- 11:23Speaker 4: this point, that's a long time to be at one brand,
- 11:26Speaker 4: so you've seen a fair amount of change. What would
- 11:29Speaker 4: you say when you got into your first role there
- 11:32Speaker 4: working as a social editor was what you expected versus
- 11:35Speaker 4: what was completely different.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Well, when I interviewed for this job, I truly I
- 11:40Speaker 1: was kind of like, I thought they would never hire
- 11:43Speaker 1: me because I was not a traditional like fitness girly.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I'm still not. I mean I like to I work
- 11:50Speaker 1: out like we all do, but I felt like I
- 11:52Speaker 1: didn't fit the mold. And then I realized that a
- 11:56Speaker 1: women's health girl is not There is no mold like
- 12:00Speaker 1: it is. You know, it's not just like you work
- 12:03Speaker 1: out all the time. It's like you're mentally strong, you
- 12:06Speaker 1: love sports, you you know, you have all these other
- 12:08Speaker 1: interests and facets about you. And I realized how broad
- 12:12Speaker 1: the scope of what women's health is and what it means.
- 12:16Speaker 5: That was so exciting to me because then I was like.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Oh, like I can write about sports here, like this fits,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you know, so much fits in our brand that I
- 12:28Speaker 1: never would have thought when I first started.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and so as you get your feet wet, you're thinking,
- 12:33Speaker 4: maybe I don't know if this is right for me,
- 12:35Speaker 4: and then it quickly becomes a parent that yes, this
- 12:37Speaker 4: is something that I can totally get on board with
- 12:39Speaker 4: one hundred percent.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And the team is amazing. They're still amazing and have
- 12:44Speaker 1: been really supportive of that.
- 12:45Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, and also the climate of media has
- 12:50Speaker 4: drastically changed since you started at this magazine. I mean,
- 12:55Speaker 4: when you started at this magazine, I think my magazine
- 12:57Speaker 4: still existed, and then my magazine didn't exist anymore.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean layoffs, magazines folding.
- 13:03Speaker 4: How does it feel for you to be in this
- 13:06Speaker 4: space right now knowing that the climate, for lack of
- 13:09Speaker 4: a better word, is kind of volatile.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's certainly scary. It's always kind of
- 13:17Speaker 1: been scary. I mean, I'm very grateful to have the
- 13:20Speaker 1: job that I have. I don't know if I think
- 13:24Speaker 1: that anyone that any job is like.
- 13:29Speaker 6: A guarantee, Yeah, in any industry exactly where.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I kind of operate like while I'm here, I'm
- 13:36Speaker 1: going to do the best work that I possibly can do.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm going to live out my dreams. I'm going to
- 13:42Speaker 1: go to everything that I can, probably cool new stuff.
- 13:45Speaker 1: One thing I like about this, the place that media
- 13:48Speaker 1: is in right now, is that it feels a little
- 13:50Speaker 1: bit like you can kind of try anything. Yeah, Like
- 13:53Speaker 1: there's no rules anymore. There's so much of our coverage,
- 13:57Speaker 1: especially our sports coverage used to be kind of defined
- 14:00Speaker 1: by the algorithms and Google and all these things, and
- 14:03Speaker 1: now it's sort of like, do we think it's cool,
- 14:06Speaker 1: let's do it.
- 14:06Speaker 4: And that experimentation can be really fun, especially as someone
- 14:09Speaker 4: who has a social first background, because I believe that
- 14:12Speaker 4: means that when you got involved in this career in
- 14:14Speaker 4: the first place, you have to be really nimble and
- 14:16Speaker 4: really quick thinking.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah you do. And sports is a lot like that, right,
- 14:22Speaker 1: Like whatever happens in the WNBA today on the season
- 14:26Speaker 1: opener is not We're gonna be onto something else on Monday.
- 14:29Speaker 1: And that's why I feel like it our content started
- 14:32Speaker 1: in that space, yeah, because it was kind of like
- 14:35Speaker 1: we could just react to it. And it has been
- 14:38Speaker 1: a challenge, especially because for the most part, our sports
- 14:41Speaker 1: team is me, so I kind of have to think
- 14:44Speaker 1: about our content in that way, like what can I
- 14:47Speaker 1: create that feels like it will live on longer than tomorrow.
- 14:54Speaker 1: That's why we don't really do game recaps and box
- 14:57Speaker 1: scores and that kind of stuff, like we're doing more
- 15:00Speaker 1: like deep dives into the actual players and who they
- 15:03Speaker 1: are and who they are outside of their sport, and
- 15:06Speaker 1: that stuff I feel like has a much longer shelf life.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Yeah, players and who they are outside of their sport.
- 15:12Speaker 4: It makes me want to ask you more about Amanda,
- 15:14Speaker 4: who she is outside of your role. I appreciated what
- 15:18Speaker 4: you said about this kind of questioning of identity. When
- 15:21Speaker 4: you came to Women's Health and you knew you were
- 15:23Speaker 4: qualified for the job, but you weren't really super let's say,
- 15:26Speaker 4: uh Women's Health air quotes expected woman knowing that. Now,
- 15:32Speaker 4: what has your relationship been like with movement coming of
- 15:35Speaker 4: age and then today?
- 15:36Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 15:37Speaker 1: Well I was an athlete growing up. I was on
- 15:40Speaker 1: the rowing team, which is weird. I never meet other rowers,
- 15:43Speaker 1: but that was my sport. I don't know, I mean,
- 15:45Speaker 1: I did some other things, but I didn't really refall
- 15:49Speaker 1: in love with movement until I started working at Women's Health.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I mean, when I moved here, it was very much
- 15:53Speaker 1: like I was on the grind, like job to job,
- 15:57Speaker 1: trying to just get by.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and it wasn't.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, I would say I fully fell back
- 16:04Speaker 1: in love with movement during COVID because that's when I
- 16:07Speaker 1: discovered kettlebells and the idea that you don't need a
- 16:13Speaker 1: whole lot to just work out. In your house, and
- 16:16Speaker 1: that opened everything for me because I'm such a like
- 16:19Speaker 1: I'm one of those people that it'll take me two
- 16:21Speaker 1: hours to just like get it started. I'm like a
- 16:23Speaker 1: night exercise or like I put it off, and that
- 16:27Speaker 1: really opened up like a whole world for me. Shout
- 16:31Speaker 1: out to Lauren Kanski and Madeline Kanti who are slash
- 16:36Speaker 1: War on the Ladder app. They they were my kettlebell Shirpas.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I would say, but yeah, and now, I mean, now
- 16:44Speaker 1: my relationship to movement is like I basically like, I mean,
- 16:49Speaker 1: I have a kid now and he's twenty five pounds
- 16:52Speaker 1: of dead weight that I'm carrying her out my house
- 16:54Speaker 1: all the time. So it is fully I mean, I
- 16:57Speaker 1: thought people were so porny when they say this, but
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's true.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Like I need to be strong for him.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I need to be able to lift way more
- 17:05Speaker 1: than that to be able to keep up with him.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So that's really how I think about it.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Now.
- 17:10Speaker 4: What I'm hearing you say is it's a motivating factor
- 17:12Speaker 4: not only to be able obviously to lift him and
- 17:15Speaker 4: move around with him, but also I'm sure to an
- 17:18Speaker 4: extent set an example as he's growing up to be
- 17:21Speaker 4: in an active household.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Yeah, he loves to watch my husband and I work
- 17:25Speaker 1: out at home and it's so fun. He has his
- 17:27Speaker 1: own little like toy kettlebells.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And buddy, I know.
- 17:30Speaker 1: It's so sweet and I love I mean him getting
- 17:34Speaker 1: in the way is certainly dangerous when you're swinging a
- 17:36Speaker 1: very large kettlebell, but it is worth it because I
- 17:39Speaker 1: think it's fun for him to see it as fun, right,
- 17:42Speaker 1: and for him to grow up seeing that as just
- 17:45Speaker 1: like part of life.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I think about it a lot, because I bless them.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Grew up in a household where neither of my parents
- 17:51Speaker 4: really worked out a bit. I mean, I think my
- 17:54Speaker 4: mom maybe belonged to the YMCA. Yeah, but we would
- 18:00Speaker 4: sporadically go on walks, maybe a bike ride here and there,
- 18:03Speaker 4: but otherwise life was really just not revolving around movement.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And so I don't know if I'm going to have children,
- 18:09Speaker 4: but if I do, it's something I do think about
- 18:11Speaker 4: a lot that like that is such an opportunity to
- 18:14Speaker 4: model for them a lifestyle that has given me so much. Obviously,
- 18:19Speaker 4: they can make their own decisions, but at least I
- 18:21Speaker 4: want to, within my capacity, show them this can be
- 18:24Speaker 4: fun and it can be something that you can do regularly.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, I always had I had had a similar thought.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Although I will say when you do have a kid,
- 18:32Speaker 1: it does sort of feel like you feel a little
- 18:35Speaker 1: bit guilty. You feel like, Okay, I should be hanging
- 18:39Speaker 1: out with him and playing with him and teaching him
- 18:41Speaker 1: something and you know, doing all these other things instead
- 18:44Speaker 1: of like making him watch me work out right, it's
- 18:47Speaker 1: so selfish, you know, the mom guilt and all those
- 18:50Speaker 1: like whatever things that people say, but like you make
- 18:54Speaker 1: it fun for them, Like you, it's it's not so serious.
- 18:58Speaker 1: It's just fitness, like you can, I'll have funny.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Well, I appreciate that you've made this a priority for
- 19:04Speaker 4: yourself because you know it's important for your family. But then,
- 19:07Speaker 4: in speaking of things that you're making a priority for yourself,
- 19:10Speaker 4: like you said, you're all over the place, and so
- 19:12Speaker 4: you're figuring out right now how to do as much
- 19:16Speaker 4: as possible. I don't want to say do it all,
- 19:18Speaker 4: because you can't do it all, but you are putting
- 19:20Speaker 4: in a lot of effort to be as many places
- 19:23Speaker 4: as you can while showing up for your family. Talk
- 19:27Speaker 4: to me a little bit about how that transition has
- 19:28Speaker 4: been for you.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Well, here's what I'll say about my son. First of all,
- 19:32Speaker 1: my son is like a miracle baby. I mean, like
- 19:35Speaker 1: all babies are miracles, but he's literally he's a product
- 19:38Speaker 1: of multiple years and three rounds of IUI and four
- 19:42Speaker 1: rounds of IBF.
- 19:43Speaker 5: We went through a lot to have him.
- 19:45Speaker 1: And when I was going through all of that, I
- 19:48Speaker 1: at work was the ultimate yes girl. I said yes
- 19:53Speaker 1: to every trip and every interview and literally everything, because
- 19:59Speaker 1: women's sports was like my lifeline, Like that was my passion.
- 20:02Speaker 1: That was like my saving grace, the thing that got
- 20:05Speaker 1: me excited to like get out the door every day.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And so it's funny because so many of the things
- 20:11Speaker 1: that we've been talking about that I've worked on or
- 20:13Speaker 1: whatever are like a product of that time in my life.
- 20:17Speaker 1: And what's been interesting and sort of difficult about this
- 20:21Speaker 1: transition into now having him is that now I can't
- 20:27Speaker 1: say yes to everything, and that's become part of like
- 20:30Speaker 1: who I am, right Like I want to be everywhere.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I know how fun like every championship and All Star
- 20:37Speaker 1: Weekend and everything. I know how fun it is and
- 20:39Speaker 1: how much great content comes of that and interviews, and
- 20:42Speaker 1: I want to do it all still but I also
- 20:46Speaker 1: like need to be with him right now, like he's
- 20:49Speaker 1: he's my priority now.
- 20:51Speaker 5: So I have been my word.
- 20:54Speaker 1: For twenty twenty six, Like my word of the year
- 20:56Speaker 1: is no. Oh, I am being much more selective with
- 21:02Speaker 1: what I say yes to and the stories that I
- 21:05Speaker 1: take on. You know, I can't do the all night
- 21:09Speaker 1: writing grind that I've used to, and I love I
- 21:14Speaker 1: love that, but yeah, I've had to be a lot
- 21:16Speaker 1: more selective. I'm very grateful that we are now, our
- 21:19Speaker 1: coverage is now in a place where we can be
- 21:22Speaker 1: more selective about what we do. But like I want
- 21:24Speaker 1: to cover everything. I want to write about everyone, like,
- 21:26Speaker 1: especially because women's sports deserves it. So that's been a
- 21:29Speaker 1: challenge for sure.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Aside from it being a challenge, how have you been
- 21:49Speaker 4: able to offer yourself some grace knowing that you have
- 21:53Speaker 4: multiple priorities.
- 21:55Speaker 1: You know, I'm still working on it. Honestly, You're always
- 22:00Speaker 1: going to feel like you're not one hundred percent in something,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and that is I'm still working through how to.
- 22:08Speaker 5: How to tackle that. To be totally honest, I yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 5: I I don't know.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I mean, and I think that is like
- 22:17Speaker 4: a completely relatable and understandable experience, right because whether it's
- 22:21Speaker 4: a child, or whether it's wanting to show up for
- 22:23Speaker 4: other family members or friends, or just multiple obligations and
- 22:26Speaker 4: works in the way, and there's just so many different
- 22:28Speaker 4: factors in the equation. Everyone's trying to do the best
- 22:31Speaker 4: they can at any given time. It's that recognition that
- 22:35Speaker 4: you are going into a situation with the best intentions.
- 22:39Speaker 3: That's what I find for me is my north star.
- 22:42Speaker 4: It's like, totally, I know, I'm truly trying to do
- 22:45Speaker 4: the best I can with what I have, and there
- 22:46Speaker 4: are going to be moments that I might quote unquote
- 22:49Speaker 4: fall short in one arena, but the goal is just
- 22:52Speaker 4: never to let any of the buckets run dry.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yes, totally, And that's like I mean not to get
- 22:58Speaker 1: you know whatever. But that's like something I've talked about
- 23:00Speaker 1: a lot in therapy and it is like, really that
- 23:02Speaker 1: has been helpful to me is to remember, like I
- 23:04Speaker 1: really am doing the best I can.
- 23:05Speaker 5: I try not to Like I always.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Especially when I was going through in fertility, I never
- 23:11Speaker 1: liked people to create this idea that like your time
- 23:16Speaker 1: is more valuable because you have a kid, or you know,
- 23:20Speaker 1: you can be excused from not being one hundred percent
- 23:25Speaker 1: there because you have a kid. I don't think that's
- 23:26Speaker 1: fair necessarily, So I really try to like bring my
- 23:29Speaker 1: best self to everything while also like understanding that I
- 23:34Speaker 1: can say no and I can, you know, pull out
- 23:37Speaker 1: of things I used to maybe say yes too, and
- 23:41Speaker 1: that has to be like my new standard.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Yeah, my new standard. This is how it is now.
- 23:45Speaker 4: It's different than five minutes ago, and it's going to
- 23:47Speaker 4: be different five minutes from now for you as you're
- 23:52Speaker 4: embracing this new standard.
- 23:54Speaker 3: I actually really appreciate.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Your opening up about the fertility. I think that that
- 24:01Speaker 4: is something that is certainly not talked about enough. I
- 24:06Speaker 4: have so many after I froze my eggs, I felt
- 24:08Speaker 4: like I had like four other friends that did the
- 24:10Speaker 4: same thing within a month and a half, and it
- 24:12Speaker 4: just becomes a height end awareness when it's something that
- 24:15Speaker 4: you're going through. You mentioned going to therapy during that time.
- 24:21Speaker 4: It's almost like I want to ask you how you
- 24:23Speaker 4: kept showing up when it felt really difficult, because going
- 24:26Speaker 4: through IUI, you said three times and then multiple rounds
- 24:30Speaker 4: of IVF.
- 24:30Speaker 3: It's not easy.
- 24:32Speaker 1: No, I mean, therapy certainly helps. I'm very glad that
- 24:36Speaker 1: I was doing that, like I started that practice before
- 24:40Speaker 1: I got into all of the IVF stuff. But also
- 24:44Speaker 1: I would say, honestly having other things that I was
- 24:48Speaker 1: passionate about, Like it's like what I was saying about
- 24:51Speaker 1: kind of throwing myself into work.
- 24:53Speaker 5: And maybe to.
- 24:54Speaker 6: Some people that sounds a little like yikes, but it
- 24:57Speaker 6: truly was like I had some that I was so
- 25:01Speaker 6: excited about, and I got to a point in my
- 25:03Speaker 6: journey where I was like, even if this doesn't work
- 25:07Speaker 6: out for me, if we don't have a baby, I
- 25:10Speaker 6: have such a full life, yeah, that I will be
- 25:15Speaker 6: okay and I will be happy, and I don't need
- 25:19Speaker 6: this to complete me, Like this is adding on to
- 25:24Speaker 6: my already full life.
- 25:26Speaker 1: It was so important to me to just do everything
- 25:29Speaker 1: and travel, Like it's so easy when you're going through
- 25:32Speaker 1: a down day to curl up in bed and be
- 25:34Speaker 1: like I'm never coming.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Out so true.
- 25:36Speaker 1: But it also for me it was easy to get
- 25:39Speaker 1: on the plane and go have fun and live my
- 25:43Speaker 1: best life and do my best work and just feel
- 25:47Speaker 1: fulfilled in other ways, because otherwise you just let this
- 25:51Speaker 1: thing consume you.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, And both sides of the coin are so understandable.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I think it's so commendable on you to be able
- 25:57Speaker 4: to take a step out and take a step back
- 26:00Speaker 4: and look at your life and say I can be
- 26:02Speaker 4: good as I am because I know that that it's
- 26:04Speaker 4: truly just such a struggle for so many women that
- 26:08Speaker 4: are going through and walking a similar path.
- 26:11Speaker 5: It's tough to.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Be like, oh, like you know, a couple of rounds
- 26:15Speaker 1: in you're like, maybe this isn't the cards for me.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and you do sort of have to.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Face that reality of like, at any point this could
- 26:22Speaker 1: go wrong. The entire experience is totally out of your control. Yeah,
- 26:25Speaker 1: there's nothing you can do to you know, as much
- 26:27Speaker 1: as you want to say, oh, these supplements, these whatever,
- 26:30Speaker 1: there's truly nothing you can do.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:32Speaker 1: So to get to a place towards the end where
- 26:34Speaker 1: I was like, if this doesn't work out for me,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I will be okay, I will say. My therapist also
- 26:39Speaker 1: like something that she said that really stuck with me
- 26:41Speaker 1: was like, if you worry about something that hasn't happened,
- 26:47Speaker 1: then it does happen. You just worried twice, Yeah, so
- 26:50Speaker 1: you're really because I'm a big warrior, and she was like,
- 26:54Speaker 1: you're kind of wasting your time girl, Like you're gonna
- 26:57Speaker 1: have to go through that pain now and later, right,
- 27:00Speaker 1: So you should live now and we'll deal with it later.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Like think of all the stuff you've been through already.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Yeah, you'll get through it. You know, you'll get through it.
- 27:08Speaker 4: And it's such a beautiful reminder one of the many
- 27:11Speaker 4: lessons I'm sure that you learned from that time when
- 27:14Speaker 4: you reflect on that challenging hurdle moment.
- 27:17Speaker 3: What else would you say has really stuck with you?
- 27:20Speaker 6: M that?
- 27:22Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I was when we started trying
- 27:27Speaker 1: to have a baby, I was like, I'm ready, you know,
- 27:31Speaker 1: Like we moved into a new place, and we were
- 27:33Speaker 1: like all set up, and we were we were we
- 27:35Speaker 1: felt like we were ready, right. But then as we
- 27:38Speaker 1: were going through all of this, then you know, work happened,
- 27:41Speaker 1: and the Paris Olympics happened, and the Women's World Cup happened,
- 27:45Speaker 1: and all of these things that I got to do
- 27:46Speaker 1: and experience, and my husband and I took so many
- 27:49Speaker 1: trips and we did so many fun things, and we both,
- 27:53Speaker 1: you know, are worked so hard in our careers and
- 27:56Speaker 1: other things. And I just feel like the time of
- 28:00Speaker 1: when we did have our son ended up being so
- 28:04Speaker 1: perfect and things. You know, it really was a reminder
- 28:07Speaker 1: like things work out the way they're supposed to and
- 28:11Speaker 1: you kind of just have to let go and trust
- 28:13Speaker 1: that that will be the case. Yeah. I think about
- 28:16Speaker 1: like if I had had a baby when I thought
- 28:18Speaker 1: I was going to my whole life would be totally
- 28:20Speaker 1: different now. And but it all happened exactly the way
- 28:23Speaker 1: it was meant to.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Because he went to Paris as well, right, yea on vacation.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I saw you pounding the pavement in those streets. You
- 28:32Speaker 4: were just running from one arena to the next arena
- 28:35Speaker 4: to the next arena.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Like three sports today. That poor guy was like, do
- 28:38Speaker 1: you want to get dinner?
- 28:39Speaker 4: I was like, uh no, actually I'm actually incapable of
- 28:42Speaker 4: doing that.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Actually McDonald's at one am will be great.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Yes, I mean that was your first experience covering in
- 28:48Speaker 4: Olympic Games.
- 28:49Speaker 3: When you think back to.
- 28:51Speaker 4: That, let's call it to three week period of your life,
- 28:54Speaker 4: what's one of the most resounding bright memories that comes
- 28:58Speaker 4: up for you?
- 28:59Speaker 5: Oh, bright memory?
- 29:00Speaker 1: I mean that was just such a like hole, late crap,
- 29:03Speaker 1: I'm covering my first Olympics. Yeah, what a dream, Like
- 29:07Speaker 1: like people work their whole lives to be able to
- 29:09Speaker 1: do this, Like I was very like I've peaked.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Yeah, this is amazing.
- 29:12Speaker 4: And when you say I'm covering the Olympics, what does
- 29:16Speaker 4: that look like for you?
- 29:18Speaker 5: Sure?
- 29:18Speaker 1: I mean, well, we had our credentials and basically I
- 29:23Speaker 1: was going to as many things as possible, looking for
- 29:25Speaker 1: as many good stories as I possibly could. Social content.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I'm trying to think. It is such a whirlwind. I
- 29:32Speaker 1: was writing all night and just kind of trying to
- 29:36Speaker 1: like get in there in the press rooms and in
- 29:39Speaker 1: the mix zone. And I learned so much about being
- 29:43Speaker 1: like a confident, you know, putting myself out there as
- 29:46Speaker 1: a reporter. Yeah, the first couple of days were like
- 29:48Speaker 1: an adjustment and then I was like, you know what
- 29:50Speaker 1: I'm all in and it was pretty It was it
- 29:54Speaker 1: was like you were getting like a crash course in
- 29:57Speaker 1: like a whole different type of journalism.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Yeah, real time.
- 30:00Speaker 4: And so when you say putting yourself out there, it's
- 30:02Speaker 4: it's kind of multifaceted. I'm sure part of it is
- 30:05Speaker 4: being willing to be the person that speaks up in
- 30:08Speaker 4: a room of a lot of people terrifying positioning.
- 30:10Speaker 1: And they're men, Like, it's a lot of men, right,
- 30:12Speaker 1: and they're tall, and there's like it's basically I mean,
- 30:16Speaker 1: it's a scrum. It's like there's a ton of people
- 30:18Speaker 1: and everyone's got their phones out there, and you're kind
- 30:21Speaker 1: of just all squished together and you're like, you know, simone, simone,
- 30:24Speaker 1: like yeah, like yelling, just trying to get their attention,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and that is really stressful. Like I'm very used to
- 30:30Speaker 1: a one on one interview over the phone whatever. And
- 30:33Speaker 1: I certainly saw my confidence grow over the eighteen days
- 30:38Speaker 1: that I was there, and I was really proud of
- 30:41Speaker 1: that because I have not traditionally been like an outgoing.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Type of reporter.
- 30:46Speaker 4: How has that reverberated, you know, in the years since
- 30:50Speaker 4: the first Olympics, How has that really impacted you?
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean well now I feel confident going to
- 30:57Speaker 1: just about anything. Yeah, there's no quotes. I won't ask
- 31:01Speaker 1: you if it needs to be asked, because you know,
- 31:04Speaker 1: the worst thing they can say is no. But I
- 31:06Speaker 1: also learned sort of what not to do again being
- 31:10Speaker 1: in a room full of men and seeing the way
- 31:12Speaker 1: they can intimidate other reporters.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Don't want to be like that.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I want to be kind to the other reporters who
- 31:18Speaker 1: come after me, who it's their first Olympics or their
- 31:21Speaker 1: first time in the press room or whatever, Like I
- 31:24Speaker 1: want to try to be a welcoming face.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Do you remember the last time someone said no to you?
- 31:31Speaker 5: I mean, people say no all the time.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, No, It's very true.
- 31:35Speaker 1: People say no all the time. There are so many
- 31:37Speaker 1: things I want to do or you know that I've
- 31:41Speaker 1: been turned down, and.
- 31:43Speaker 5: You know you move on?
- 31:45Speaker 1: How how I mean, because there's always there's so much
- 31:50Speaker 1: There's so much to do, there's so much to cover.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I don't really have time to dwell on a no
- 31:55Speaker 1: because I have my to do list is so long,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and my list of like people that I want to
- 32:01Speaker 1: talk to and write about and cover and feature.
- 32:05Speaker 3: Is so long.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that I can move on to the next.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Thing, knowing that if I feel really passionate about getting
- 32:13Speaker 1: something specific, I will come back to it and I
- 32:17Speaker 1: will make you say yes.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 4: And that's probably part of the reverberation of that confidence
- 32:23Speaker 4: that you started to build upon in Paris.
- 32:26Speaker 5: I would say, so.
- 32:27Speaker 1: I mean a lot of it is like just being
- 32:30Speaker 1: in the room, making the effort to be there and
- 32:33Speaker 1: show that, like women's health is coming to these spaces
- 32:36Speaker 1: and we're serious, and we want to cover this just
- 32:39Speaker 1: like any other outlet and really kind of proving ourselves
- 32:44Speaker 1: in the women's sports space. And I take that very seriously.
- 32:47Speaker 1: And you know, I feel like if I get to
- 32:50Speaker 1: know now, maybe the work that I do in the
- 32:53Speaker 1: next week or the next month will be the thing
- 32:56Speaker 1: that that person sees and says, yeah, maybe I should
- 32:59Speaker 1: give her a.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Yues Yeah, maybe I should give her a yes, or
- 33:01Speaker 4: maybe I should give Women's health a follow. Which again,
- 33:05Speaker 4: as we talk, as we talk about the payoff of
- 33:07Speaker 4: all of this work, it must feel quite rewarding, as
- 33:11Speaker 4: you so beautifully articulated. I mean, you're doing this kind
- 33:15Speaker 4: of as a one man band, and that's a lot
- 33:18Speaker 4: of pressure.
- 33:20Speaker 1: It is, but it also isn't Like what's kind of
- 33:23Speaker 1: nice about it is that I and I don't want
- 33:26Speaker 1: to say I do anything alone. I mean, we have
- 33:28Speaker 1: an incredible team. Our art team is absolutely amazing. Our
- 33:32Speaker 1: executive editor Abby, who you know, is like ed its
- 33:35Speaker 1: every single thing I write and it makes me so
- 33:37Speaker 1: much better.
- 33:39Speaker 5: And we have a fantastic video.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Team and all of these and social team and all
- 33:44Speaker 1: these things that.
- 33:45Speaker 5: Help it all come together.
- 33:46Speaker 1: But it doesn't feel like pressure because I kind of
- 33:50Speaker 1: like it's just me right, Like I can kind of
- 33:55Speaker 1: make it what I want. It's like what I'm saying before,
- 33:57Speaker 1: I feel like I have the beautiful opportunity to just
- 34:01Speaker 1: try things and see what works. So I kind of
- 34:05Speaker 1: take that pressure off of myself, which maybe is you know,
- 34:08Speaker 1: in media, obviously there's goals you have to hit, and
- 34:10Speaker 1: there's traffic, and there's sales.
- 34:12Speaker 5: And all these things.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But I really firmly believe that if you just make
- 34:17Speaker 1: the stuff you really believe in and you are passionate
- 34:22Speaker 1: about that, that it comes through. And like, like, if
- 34:25Speaker 1: you don't want to read it, why is anyone else
- 34:27Speaker 1: going to want to read it? So I'm making the
- 34:29Speaker 1: stuff that I just feel like should be out there
- 34:31Speaker 1: that I feel like is missing.
- 34:32Speaker 3: And what a dope opportunity that is.
- 34:34Speaker 4: Again, it just makes me so happy to hear you
- 34:38Speaker 4: talk about this, And I'm giggling in my head thinking
- 34:41Speaker 4: about when we crossed paths in Phoenix and you were
- 34:45Speaker 4: working on a voiceover for a video and you were like, this.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Is not in the wheelhouse.
- 34:49Speaker 4: Oh my god, this is not in the wheelhouse. I
- 34:51Speaker 4: was like, well, I cannot do it for you, so
- 34:52Speaker 4: it must be in the wheelhouse.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I really had to pull that out of somewhere. I
- 34:56Speaker 1: have been pulled out of my comfort zone so many
- 34:59Speaker 1: times this job, I mean, like doing our podcast, the huddle,
- 35:04Speaker 1: not hurdle, the huddle doing, but doing our podcast has
- 35:08Speaker 1: been totally out of the comfort zone for me.
- 35:10Speaker 3: What is it about that that feels so left field?
- 35:13Speaker 1: Well, just a new platform. I have never been, you know,
- 35:17Speaker 1: the person that does this. I've always been the social person,
- 35:20Speaker 1: the person that's behind the phone or behind the camera.
- 35:23Speaker 1: But it's really exciting to get to talk about sports
- 35:26Speaker 1: and well, as we say in our podcast, sports sweat
- 35:29Speaker 1: and everything in between. It's really fun to get to
- 35:31Speaker 1: talk about those things, like in a new environment.
- 35:35Speaker 4: What would you say the most challenging part of that process,
- 35:38Speaker 4: of the podcasting process is for.
- 35:39Speaker 1: You ooh, well, well, I would say that interviewing on
- 35:44Speaker 1: a podcast, as you know, is different than interviewing for
- 35:47Speaker 1: a digital story or for social media. And I tend
- 35:52Speaker 1: sometimes I feel like I lean on my like knowledge
- 35:55Speaker 1: of what goes quote unquote viral, and you kind of
- 35:59Speaker 1: have to use a different part of your your brain
- 36:01Speaker 1: when you're when you're doing each of these platforms and medms.
- 36:05Speaker 1: So we're learning as we go, but so far it's
- 36:08Speaker 1: been really fun.
- 36:08Speaker 4: We're learning as we go, and you've had some pretty
- 36:10Speaker 4: stellar guests so far.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Are you kind of losing it in the chair.
- 36:14Speaker 2: A little bit?
- 36:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:16Speaker 1: We've had Hillary Knight from the women's hockey team. We've
- 36:19Speaker 1: had Alana Meyers, Taylor the Bob's Letter. We had this
- 36:22Speaker 1: incredible episode with Kara Swisher, who has been on this
- 36:26Speaker 1: like crusade to like take down the longevity bros. And No,
- 36:32Speaker 1: that's needed. So that was a really fun conversation. We
- 36:35Speaker 1: have We've just shot some that I can't wait for
- 36:38Speaker 1: you to see. But yeah, it's been really, really fun
- 36:40Speaker 1: and it's fun to connect with people in this way.
- 36:44Speaker 3: And Gabrielle Lyon recently, Yes, oh my.
- 36:47Speaker 1: God, she's the best talking about you know, how important
- 36:50Speaker 1: muscle is and to your overall like life span, and yeah,
- 36:54Speaker 1: I've learned so much from doing this. Also, like I'm
- 36:57Speaker 1: so in the sports world that when we have the
- 36:59Speaker 1: health like the health focused people on, I am just
- 37:02Speaker 1: sitting there like, oh my god.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like a total light bulb moment.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you must feel like that every day.
- 37:08Speaker 4: I definitely feel I feel super fortunate to be able
- 37:12Speaker 4: to learn from so many people that I'm inspired by.
- 37:16Speaker 4: And to your point earlier about am I asking the
- 37:19Speaker 4: questions that I would want to know, I'm always going
- 37:22Speaker 4: back to that, and I think that is also a
- 37:25Speaker 4: big part of the reason why I don't believe that
- 37:27Speaker 4: there is anything like a small question, because if I'm
- 37:31Speaker 4: sitting here wondering something, yeah, someone else listening to this
- 37:36Speaker 4: right now is probably wondering the exact same thing. I
- 37:40Speaker 4: find that oftentimes people choose not to ask a question
- 37:44Speaker 4: because they might be worried that it's silly or dumb
- 37:47Speaker 4: or they should know.
- 37:48Speaker 3: And I'm like, I have no ego.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I'm okay if I'm just sitting here and I'm like,
- 37:52Speaker 4: I don't know the answer at all.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that's like how I felt. I mean, that's how
- 37:55Speaker 1: I feel in the mix zone at the Olympics. That's
- 37:57Speaker 1: how I sometimes feel on the podcast. I'm like, I
- 38:00Speaker 1: want to jump in, but I don't know. Like it's
- 38:02Speaker 1: it's really cool to like get out of your comfort
- 38:05Speaker 1: zone and be like, no, it's there are no dumb questions.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Here, and yeah, yeah, I've learned a lot from doing that.
- 38:12Speaker 4: You've learned a lot, and you've also covered a lot.
- 38:15Speaker 4: What would you say over the last few years, has
- 38:17Speaker 4: been one of your most exciting stories to cover.
- 38:21Speaker 1: M I know, everything is like so exciting, but I
- 38:25Speaker 1: think more about like experiences, and I mean, I'm really
- 38:29Speaker 1: proud of the package that we just put out in
- 38:33Speaker 1: our spring issue called Game Changers, which is like sort
- 38:37Speaker 1: of a new way of sports storytelling. We've featured six
- 38:41Speaker 1: women who are like moving the needle in sports behind
- 38:45Speaker 1: the scenes. So they're people that you if you're a
- 38:47Speaker 1: sports fan, you may or may not have heard of them,
- 38:50Speaker 1: but they are like literally some of the people who
- 38:52Speaker 1: are making this world what it is, not just women's sports,
- 38:56Speaker 1: but women's and men's sports. So we have folks like
- 39:00Speaker 1: you know, Sam Rappaport, who's like a personal hero of mine.
- 39:02Speaker 1: She's a consultant at the NFL, and she's like the
- 39:06Speaker 1: the person who she's the reason why we have women
- 39:09Speaker 1: coaches in the NFL right now. I could not be
- 39:12Speaker 1: more obsessed with her, and I'm so happy she's in this.
- 39:15Speaker 1: We have you know, Maria Taylor, who is on NBC
- 39:18Speaker 1: and she's been telling like all sorts of untold stories
- 39:22Speaker 1: because she says, you know, She's someone who has been
- 39:26Speaker 1: the first and the only in a room, and so
- 39:28Speaker 1: she feels now like it's her responsibility to tell those
- 39:31Speaker 1: stories of the other folks. Yeah, we're in that position,
- 39:34Speaker 1: and so anyways, we've been kind of trying to tell
- 39:37Speaker 1: those sorts of stories and that feels like an evolution
- 39:40Speaker 1: in our coverage and I'm so proud of that because
- 39:43Speaker 1: it's it's less about like who's trending in sports right
- 39:49Speaker 1: now you or what is trending, and more just like
- 39:51Speaker 1: these women are awesome and you should know them.
- 39:54Speaker 4: It's really cool to see that this is the first
- 39:57Speaker 4: person to do it this way. Theme happening more and
- 40:01Speaker 4: more regularly throughout women's sports. I mean, for me, as
- 40:04Speaker 4: I sit here, Jessica Campbell comes to mind. Now hopefully
- 40:08Speaker 4: I'm hoping she's going to go over to the woman's
- 40:11Speaker 4: side of that.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Yeah right, I mean it would be a big deal.
- 40:14Speaker 4: But for those of you that aren't familiar with Jessica,
- 40:16Speaker 4: she was on the show, I'll linked in the show notes.
- 40:18Speaker 4: But the first female coach within the NHL, which is
- 40:22Speaker 4: such a major deal, and we're just seeing more and
- 40:24Speaker 4: more of that, and it's just again that through line
- 40:27Speaker 4: that we say over and over and over again that
- 40:30Speaker 4: in order to be her, you need to see her
- 40:32Speaker 4: and less women are afraid of being her.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Now, Yes, exactly, And there are so many women who
- 40:39Speaker 1: work so tirelessly behind the scenes like that to create
- 40:42Speaker 1: that opportunity for others, and like we should give them
- 40:45Speaker 1: their flowers too, Like these athletes deserve all the attention
- 40:50Speaker 1: they get, and so do all the women working behind
- 40:53Speaker 1: the scenes.
- 40:53Speaker 4: So you said before something that I thought was really
- 41:14Speaker 4: beautiful in that I'm gonna do the best I can
- 41:17Speaker 4: with what I have while I get to do it
- 41:19Speaker 4: knowing that you're in an industry that has a slew
- 41:23Speaker 4: of question marks all over the place. When you look
- 41:26Speaker 4: at the job that you're doing now, the work that
- 41:28Speaker 4: you're doing, Now, what is it that you hope that
- 41:30Speaker 4: people see through the work that you're putting out?
- 41:33Speaker 6: Oh?
- 41:34Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like as a media brand that
- 41:38Speaker 1: covers women's sports, we have just as much of a
- 41:41Speaker 1: responsibility as the teams in the leagues and the athletes
- 41:46Speaker 1: to grow the game right. We care about it, and
- 41:51Speaker 1: it's our job to tell those stories because I feel like,
- 41:54Speaker 1: I mean, one of the things I love about sports
- 41:56Speaker 1: is knowing who the people are and what makes them
- 41:59Speaker 1: take and their interesting hobbies and their families and you
- 42:03Speaker 1: know the things that are important to them, And that
- 42:05Speaker 1: makes me more locked in when I watch a game,
- 42:08Speaker 1: So to me, like, I want people to read our
- 42:12Speaker 1: coverage and really watch the game within through a new lens,
- 42:16Speaker 1: maybe learn about a player they had never heard of
- 42:18Speaker 1: before that they're like, wow, she's I relate to her
- 42:21Speaker 1: in this way, or she's got a cool like we
- 42:24Speaker 1: just did. We just did a story on Dominique Malanga
- 42:27Speaker 1: from the Seattle Storm, who I absolutely love and she's
- 42:31Speaker 1: like going to school on the weekends to get her
- 42:33Speaker 1: computer science degree, and she also like plays piano, and
- 42:37Speaker 1: she has all these interesting things about her. And what
- 42:40Speaker 1: most people know about her is just that she can dunk.
- 42:42Speaker 1: She's six six and she can dunk, and that's incredible.
- 42:45Speaker 1: But there's so much more to her and that makes
- 42:47Speaker 1: me so much more invested in her success on her
- 42:49Speaker 1: team this year. So that's what I want people to
- 42:52Speaker 1: take away from our coverage is just like a new
- 42:55Speaker 1: or a bigger appreciation for these athletes and these women
- 42:58Speaker 1: who are part of this game.
- 42:59Speaker 4: What makes women's health sports coverage different than another outlets
- 43:03Speaker 4: sports coverage.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I really think it is that it's
- 43:07Speaker 1: not a lot about the breaking news. I think a
- 43:10Speaker 1: lot of the other outlets have that covered. We are,
- 43:13Speaker 1: you know when you talk about like our competitive set
- 43:17Speaker 1: or whatever. Our coverage used to focus a lot on,
- 43:20Speaker 1: like like very literal women's health coverage, like how they
- 43:25Speaker 1: exercise it right, how they fuel and all those things.
- 43:28Speaker 1: And I really feel like we've evolved since then, not
- 43:30Speaker 1: that that's not an important part of who an athlete is,
- 43:32Speaker 1: but we've really gone deeper and really gotten to like
- 43:37Speaker 1: the core of who these folks are, and we are honestly,
- 43:41Speaker 1: we're getting exclusives and we're the only people that are
- 43:44Speaker 1: getting that information. We're not really regurgitating sports coverage it's
- 43:48Speaker 1: already out there. We're like doing our own reporting. And
- 43:51Speaker 1: I think that makes it special.
- 43:52Speaker 3: That makes it special.
- 43:54Speaker 4: How does that when you when you say, I mean
- 43:56Speaker 4: like it's really cool if you think about it. And also,
- 43:58Speaker 4: like again taking a step back, I'm realizing like there
- 44:00Speaker 4: just aren't a lot of people doing what it is
- 44:03Speaker 4: you do.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Yeah, someone has to do it. Somebody, somebody's got to
- 44:07Speaker 1: do it.
- 44:08Speaker 3: So when you think.
- 44:09Speaker 4: About, now, what you're most excited for in the seasons
- 44:13Speaker 4: to come, and again we're on the cusp of this
- 44:14Speaker 4: WNBA season, but so much more to be amped about
- 44:18Speaker 4: right now within women's sports.
- 44:19Speaker 3: What comes to mind.
- 44:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's definitely the w I would not be
- 44:22Speaker 1: sitting here in a New York Liberty Jersey thinking about
- 44:24Speaker 1: anything else. I'm so excited for this season now that
- 44:27Speaker 1: the players are getting paid and free agency was nuts,
- 44:30Speaker 1: and like the rosters all look different, it is going
- 44:33Speaker 1: to be so much freaking fun to watch. I am
- 44:36Speaker 1: excited for the NWSL season which is in full swing,
- 44:39Speaker 1: the PWHL playoffs, and the PWHL Draft where so many
- 44:43Speaker 1: of our Olympians who like are like Leila.
- 44:46Speaker 5: Who I know you had to show like they're not even.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Pro yet, Like we're about We're on such a like
- 44:53Speaker 1: just on the brink of an insane new wave of athletes.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I'm also so excited for some of the quote unquote
- 45:00Speaker 1: smaller sports to have a bigger platform, like volleyball and
- 45:04Speaker 1: flag football, which I'm obsessed with and will be in
- 45:06Speaker 1: the twenty twenty eight Olympics. I think is really having
- 45:09Speaker 1: a moment. You know, the Women's Pro Baseball League is
- 45:12Speaker 1: starting this summer Athletes Unlimited Softball league. So all of
- 45:16Speaker 1: these I feel like all of the growth when you
- 45:18Speaker 1: talk about like the WNBA and NWSL and all those leagues,
- 45:21Speaker 1: that is really like like opening things up for these
- 45:25Speaker 1: other leagues to shine, because I think people are starting
- 45:28Speaker 1: to realize, like, if you're a sports fan, then you'll
- 45:32Speaker 1: love women's sports. It is for you, right, and so
- 45:34Speaker 1: all these other I'm just so excited for all these
- 45:36Speaker 1: other sports to like get their day.
- 45:37Speaker 3: It is for you.
- 45:39Speaker 1: It's for everyone, I promise you. I mean, I doubt
- 45:43Speaker 1: there's anyone listening to this who's not in love with
- 45:46Speaker 1: women's sports. Yea, But if they're out there, I'm telling you,
- 45:50Speaker 1: there's something there for you.
- 45:52Speaker 3: There's something there for you.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Speaking of all of these sports, is there one in
- 45:55Speaker 4: particular that you're hoping to get the opportunity to cover
- 45:58Speaker 4: more in the next year?
- 46:00Speaker 1: Definitely, Flag ye I one. I feel it's really important
- 46:05Speaker 1: and this is like sort of how I've seen I'm
- 46:08Speaker 1: seeing this change more.
- 46:10Speaker 5: But I think it's so important.
- 46:11Speaker 1: To cover Olympic sports, not in an Olympic year, and
- 46:14Speaker 1: Olympic athletes and constantly be hyping them up.
- 46:17Speaker 5: I mean, they compete all the time.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and they get so much attention right then, and
- 46:21Speaker 1: then we kind of like it wanes a way. So
- 46:23Speaker 1: flag is an example of a sport that I think
- 46:25Speaker 1: in twenty twenty eight, everyone is going to be talking
- 46:28Speaker 1: about flag football and I.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Want to cover it now.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Why do we have to wait? There's so many incredible
- 46:33Speaker 1: athletes and women working on growing the sport in the US.
- 46:38Speaker 1: It's like sanctioned as a high school sport and like
- 46:41Speaker 1: I want to say almost maybe more than half the states.
- 46:45Speaker 1: You'd have to fact check me, but it's really blowing up,
- 46:48Speaker 1: and I just like, let's.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Cover it now. Yeah, I share that sentiment especially also.
- 46:52Speaker 4: I mean when it comes to track and field, it's
- 46:54Speaker 4: like in off years, I'll put that in air quotes
- 46:56Speaker 4: for track and field and that there's just not the
- 46:58Speaker 4: usual cycle of comp petitians and so so many of
- 47:01Speaker 4: the people that the population couldn't stop talking about are
- 47:06Speaker 4: now on the back burner, which is another reason why
- 47:09Speaker 4: so many of some of your favorite track athletes have
- 47:11Speaker 4: taken the time now to start a family.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Yes, totally, but that makes them interesting, right, Like there's
- 47:18Speaker 1: so many little stories in the track and field world
- 47:21Speaker 1: I feel like in that realm, like the runner who
- 47:24Speaker 1: lost her sponsorship when she was pregnant, and I'm like,
- 47:27Speaker 1: we should be talking about that.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Oh yeah, trust me, the people the people are talking
- 47:31Speaker 4: the Reddit threads are the running threads feel some kind
- 47:35Speaker 4: of way, that is to say the least.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I gotta get on there. I'm I'm like neck deep
- 47:41Speaker 1: in WNBA threads.
- 47:42Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 47:44Speaker 4: I don't know of being on threads for any amount
- 47:46Speaker 4: of extended time is good for anyone. It's actually just
- 47:49Speaker 4: like a wild place to be. But I will say
- 47:52Speaker 4: that I have stumbled at times onto really wholesome threads content.
- 47:56Speaker 4: I had a friend who recently lost her job and
- 47:59Speaker 4: I venmoed her for race photos and I think the
- 48:03Speaker 4: like I said, check your venmo on thread, she posted
- 48:05Speaker 4: a basically the story is, she posted a thread that said, like,
- 48:09Speaker 4: I just ran this race. The pictures are in my inbox.
- 48:11Speaker 4: Should I buy them? I don't know, I just lost
- 48:12Speaker 4: my job. And I replied to her thread and I
- 48:14Speaker 4: said check your Venmo. And I think our thread together
- 48:18Speaker 4: got like over ten thousand lights.
- 48:20Speaker 3: Like people were so excited.
- 48:22Speaker 4: They were like, this is the kind of relationships that
- 48:25Speaker 4: we all need like this is so sweet, Oh my god, and.
- 48:28Speaker 3: I'm like it was just fifty bucks.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but this is what the Internet need, Like, we
- 48:32Speaker 1: need stories like that.
- 48:33Speaker 4: We need more good people kind of joy, every positive emotion. Yes,
- 48:40Speaker 4: right now, someone comes to your Instagram page and they
- 48:43Speaker 4: see a woman that is behind the scenes, often covering
- 48:47Speaker 4: women's sports, for women's health, and also a new mom.
- 48:51Speaker 4: But when you look in the mirror, what is it
- 48:53Speaker 4: that you see looking back at you.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Amanda, ooh girl, girl, this feels like there. I wouldn't
- 49:01Speaker 1: say I look at the mirror every day and I'm like,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you go, girl, I don't know if anybody does every
- 49:06Speaker 1: single day a year, you know. But ultimately, I am
- 49:10Speaker 1: so proud of.
- 49:13Speaker 5: What I have.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Overcome and what I have the way I've grown, both.
- 49:20Speaker 5: Personally and professionally.
- 49:22Speaker 1: I truly feel like I can do anything, and that
- 49:28Speaker 1: is a really awesome place to be. I'm just like
- 49:33Speaker 1: I'm I mean, I'm a journalist and I'm a mom
- 49:36Speaker 1: and multiple things at once. I'm a wife, I'm a friend,
- 49:39Speaker 1: I'm a daughter. You know, all of those things exist
- 49:42Speaker 1: in one person, and all of those things make me
- 49:46Speaker 1: who I am.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really special.
- 49:49Speaker 4: Yeah, and it has been a really hectic, crazy, wild
- 49:55Speaker 4: few years for you. So there's just so much to
- 49:58Speaker 4: be proud of. I like to think, so yeah, you can,
- 50:02Speaker 4: you can be certain in that. I want to ask
- 50:05Speaker 4: you this, but I know it's also going to align
- 50:07Speaker 4: with the last question. So the last question here is
- 50:11Speaker 4: what advice do you have to offer yourself when maybe
- 50:14Speaker 4: you didn't have that same perspective when you were going
- 50:19Speaker 4: through IUI after IUI after IUI to IVF, when you
- 50:24Speaker 4: were asking yourself, who is it that I am outside
- 50:28Speaker 4: of all of this pain and frustration? What advice would
- 50:31Speaker 4: you offer to yourself knowing what you know now going
- 50:35Speaker 4: through that hurdle moment.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I mean, I wish I could just tell her that
- 50:38Speaker 1: everything is going to work out exactly the way it
- 50:39Speaker 1: was supposed to. And you know, nothing is nothing is linear, right,
- 50:45Speaker 1: Like there's ups and downs, and there's extreme highs and
- 50:49Speaker 1: extreme lows in work and in life. I mean that's
- 50:53Speaker 1: just you know, in everything, but it will all be
- 50:59Speaker 1: okay if I think about all the things in my
- 51:03Speaker 1: life that I've made it past, and I'm like I
- 51:07Speaker 1: can do it, you know, like I got through it
- 51:10Speaker 1: and I will get through something else. Again, and it's
- 51:17Speaker 1: I don't wish like an infertility experience on anybody, but
- 51:21Speaker 1: I'm grateful that I went through it because it taught
- 51:24Speaker 1: me how strong I am. And you know, when I
- 51:29Speaker 1: think about all of our coverage that came out of
- 51:32Speaker 1: those like three years that we were trying, and all
- 51:35Speaker 1: of the things that were going on behind the scenes,
- 51:38Speaker 1: like getting calls from my IVF doctor in Paris and putting,
- 51:44Speaker 1: you know, stabbing my butt with progesterone, and the end
- 51:47Speaker 1: of US SOLD Championship, like all of those things are
- 51:50Speaker 1: so intertwined, and I am just like, man, if you
- 51:54Speaker 1: can do that, you can do anything.
- 51:56Speaker 3: You can do anything.
- 51:58Speaker 4: Predictions for the upcoming couple of years of women's sports,
- 52:00Speaker 4: What do you got for me? Ooh, well, women's sports Sunday.
- 52:08Speaker 3: Yeah, about to blow.
- 52:09Speaker 5: Up, about to blow up?
- 52:11Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. I wish I had thought.
- 52:12Speaker 5: About this before.
- 52:13Speaker 3: Oh my god, we could have had a couple of
- 52:15Speaker 3: hot takes here.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Oh my god. Okay. Predictions for the well, I really
- 52:19Speaker 1: do think flag is going to be massive at the
- 52:22Speaker 1: Olympics in twenty twenty eight. I think everyone's going to
- 52:24Speaker 1: be talking about it, men's and women's and I think
- 52:26Speaker 1: It's going to be a totally new era for sport.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I also think volleyball is about to become absolutely massive.
- 52:32Speaker 1: College volleyball is so fun to watch.
- 52:34Speaker 4: High school of volleyball is the number one sport in
- 52:37Speaker 4: the United States. Like it's the most played sport by
- 52:40Speaker 4: high school aged women.
- 52:42Speaker 5: It is, like I mean, and massive.
- 52:44Speaker 1: It's massive and it is so fun to watch. Like
- 52:48Speaker 1: I just see it's like I was saying before, I
- 52:50Speaker 1: just see these smaller sports absolutely blowing up. What I
- 52:53Speaker 1: hope too, is that we see more of the legacy
- 52:58Speaker 1: media outlets covering sports in a way that's thoughtful and
- 53:02Speaker 1: not just like, oh this is trending. Let me hop
- 53:04Speaker 1: on big name, like I really want to see you know.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I mean, these these like red carpets are getting so
- 53:10Speaker 1: massive and everyone is trying to cover this now and
- 53:12Speaker 1: it's so exciting. But I really have faith that the
- 53:17Speaker 1: future of women's sports media is going to be, you know,
- 53:21Speaker 1: really thoughtful and well researched.
- 53:23Speaker 3: So women's health is applying for a mech gala cred ANGELI.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Well, first of all, you don't want to see me
- 53:29Speaker 1: in heels.
- 53:30Speaker 5: I cannot.
- 53:31Speaker 3: I heard moost people that go to the mecal are
- 53:33Speaker 3: actually barefoot.
- 53:34Speaker 1: Yeah, they probably.
- 53:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:35Speaker 1: I think they just like take all their shites up.
- 53:36Speaker 1: I was just thinking this week, I was like, man,
- 53:38Speaker 1: the Mechal is something I probably should do.
- 53:40Speaker 5: They got so many athletes.
- 53:41Speaker 3: There's so many athletes there.
- 53:42Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe next year.
- 53:44Speaker 4: Amanda Lucci, how do the people keep up with you?
- 53:46Speaker 4: Where do they find you on the socials? Give us
