- 0:00Speaker 1: With regard to football that we always enjoy visiting with
- 0:05Speaker 1: the managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. And
- 0:10Speaker 1: not only that, my co host on High School Scoreboard
- 0:14Speaker 1: Live alongside Aaron Hartigan as well, and I'm happy to
- 0:18Speaker 1: say I'll actually be able to join them again on
- 0:22Speaker 1: the program, So look forward to doing that. We'll be there,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Greg Teppers, how you doing, Tip.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm doing great.
- 0:28Speaker 3: And a quick note on Willie Nelson, which is a
- 0:31Speaker 3: great way to start a.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Sentence in the state of Texas.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yes, there is, there is a very I'll tweet this out.
- 0:37Speaker 3: I haven't tweeted it out in a couple of years.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I think my favorite video on the internet is this
- 0:42Speaker 3: really like bizarre video it.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Is, It's on YouTube.
- 0:47Speaker 3: It is I believe in Daryl Royle's birthday. And they
- 0:51Speaker 3: are sitting It's a group of people sitting in an
- 0:54Speaker 3: apartment with Willie Nelson sitting like cross legged on the
- 0:58Speaker 3: floor playing one of his songs songs, And you panned
- 1:01Speaker 3: the camera pans up to the couch there and sitting
- 1:06Speaker 3: next to one another are Lee Corso and Dave Campbell
- 1:12Speaker 3: and Rema Campbell sitting on a couch listening to.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Willie Nelson at DK our birthday party.
- 1:16Speaker 3: It is truly just a snapshot in time from like
- 1:20Speaker 3: nineteen seventy two or something. I watch it like every
- 1:23Speaker 3: three three months when I remember about it. It is
- 1:25Speaker 3: one of the wildest videos you'll ever see.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I would imagine, especially with some of the other
- 1:31Speaker 1: company mention. Now, you do fully understand that down in
- 1:34Speaker 1: these parts, seeing photographs of Coach Royal and Willie was
- 1:41Speaker 1: a really rather commonplace thing. They played golf together a lot.
- 1:46Speaker 1: They had the Ben, Willie and Daryl Golf Tournament for
- 1:49Speaker 1: decades with Ben Crenshaw and Willie Nelson and Daryl Royal,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and that it was adopted later after Coach Royal passed
- 1:58Speaker 1: by Mack Brown with the Mac Jack McConaughey, which is
- 2:02Speaker 1: with Mac Brown, Jack Ingram and Matthew McConaughey. Even after
- 2:06Speaker 1: even after Mac went to North Carolina, they still have
- 2:09Speaker 1: the Mac Jack and McConaughey.
- 2:11Speaker 4: So, uh so that works out. But you're but you're
- 2:13Speaker 4: right seeing some.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Of those pictures, and I'll tell you the thing that
- 2:16Speaker 1: really just flipped me out, And it happened only because
- 2:19Speaker 1: it happened by happenstance when they first made when we
- 2:24Speaker 1: were all still into in the uh in the age
- 2:27Speaker 1: of it doesn't seem like it's been that long ago.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Tip that we will watch DVD's on television, right, Uh,
- 2:34Speaker 1: there was a there was a d They started offering
- 2:38Speaker 1: the DVD sets of Saturday Night Live, and I bought
- 2:42Speaker 1: I think the first four seasons were available. So in
- 2:45Speaker 1: the first season, there is an episode that is hosted
- 2:50Speaker 1: by Mary kay Place who was an actor and producer
- 2:53Speaker 1: and director who was in television a lot in the
- 2:55Speaker 1: seventies and eighties.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And.
- 2:59Speaker 1: The the muschool guest was Willy Nelson, and Willie sings
- 3:03Speaker 1: his acts and stuff like that. And so they do it,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and they have this episode and when it's over, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: when they come out on stage and they wave and
- 3:10Speaker 1: they say thank you thanks to Willie Nelson. Think, oh
- 3:12Speaker 1: blah blah blah. And then people are standing there on
- 3:14Speaker 1: the stage hugging each other. During the credits, well among
- 3:17Speaker 1: the people out there, just sounder elseon.
- 3:19Speaker 4: I did a double take. There's Darrel Royal standing on
- 3:22Speaker 4: the stage. It's Saturday I Live. If you go back,
- 3:26Speaker 4: if you find it, you find it the.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Episode and I think what all the Saturday Night Live
- 3:32Speaker 1: episodes are now available.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I think it used to be on Hulu. I don't
- 3:35Speaker 4: know if it's is it Camas Were Peacock two, Nat
- 3:38Speaker 4: the Cock, Yeah, Rock Yeah yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 1: If you look up the episode and it's in the
- 3:42Speaker 1: first maybe the second season, but I'm almost an undercent.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Sure it's the first year.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Look for Mary k Place to host, and you'll see
- 3:49Speaker 1: and Willie Nelson's a musical guest. And you go to
- 3:52Speaker 1: the credits, you'll see Coach Royal with those glasses he
- 3:55Speaker 1: was wearing at the end of his coaching career.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Standing there. I my jaw hit the floor. I thought,
- 4:00Speaker 4: one of these.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Things is not like the other Coach Royal and Saturday
- 4:03Speaker 1: Night Live and NET Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Coach Royle had a sense of humor, but that's probably
- 4:09Speaker 3: a little rich for his for his comedy chops, I'll
- 4:12Speaker 3: be honest.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And I'm sure Willie though Clawn was going up there
- 4:15Speaker 1: and probably calling out.
- 4:17Speaker 4: On the stage at the end of everyone was waving.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it so spectacular all right, So, speaking
- 4:22Speaker 1: of of of astronomically uncommon things in Texas, I can't
- 4:26Speaker 1: remember it were you, at least from Afar or as
- 4:29Speaker 1: a kid growing up in the Dallas Forward metroplex. And
- 4:32Speaker 1: still are you a frustrated Cowboys fan?
- 4:36Speaker 2: I'm not. Somehow I ducked it.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Long story short, my family moved around a little bit.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I moved back when I was when I was in
- 4:45Speaker 3: middle school, and at that point that was the Quincy.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Carter era of the Cowboys.
- 4:49Speaker 3: That's really when I started gaining football consciousness, and I
- 4:52Speaker 3: just thought, I don't need I don't need this pain.
- 4:53Speaker 4: In my life.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Like I've got the I've got the Texas Rangers. That's enough.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So no, I'm not. I'm not a long.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Suffering Cowboys fan. But they're all a lot of them
- 5:00Speaker 3: in my life that I know are in some pain today.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Well, Cameron Parker is kind of this divorced himself from it,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but he can't completely let go. But we're telling him,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of either something or another thing,
- 5:14Speaker 1: something about getting off the pot or whatever. But anyway,
- 5:18Speaker 1: just because we've seen you and I have seen even
- 5:21Speaker 1: this year, and we see it every year, some bizarre
- 5:24Speaker 1: things happen on a football field. With the amount of
- 5:27Speaker 1: take that we watch and the amount of live telecast.
- 5:29Speaker 1: We watch of college and high school football games, so
- 5:33Speaker 1: maybe we shouldn't be that shocked or surprise, especially since
- 5:35Speaker 1: the Cowboys were involved about what happened with that block
- 5:38Speaker 1: punt moving forward, don't touch it a warrior that it happens.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Can I tell you something?
- 5:44Speaker 2: And I think you'll agree with this.
- 5:46Speaker 3: There is and certainly I understand that the NFL is
- 5:51Speaker 3: it is like people are coming in and coming out
- 5:53Speaker 3: and stuff like that, and there's roster turnover, especially on
- 5:55Speaker 3: the special teams where players get injured and get healthy
- 5:58Speaker 3: and stuff. But I would say that that is a
- 6:01Speaker 3: mistake that ninety eight percent of high school football teams
- 6:05Speaker 3: in Texas don't make that.
- 6:07Speaker 2: They're just that they they understand that they are all drilled.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And I think part of it is that like everyone
- 6:12Speaker 3: goes through special teams drills, you know, on on on
- 6:15Speaker 3: usually on Thursday Thursday, if you plan on Friday Thursday,
- 6:18Speaker 3: we're doing a lofer room, we're doing special teams and
- 6:19Speaker 3: we're practicing. Hey, you know, we're attracting Yell and Peter,
- 6:22Speaker 3: we're getting away from the ball and so yeah, that
- 6:24Speaker 3: was one thing that crossed my mind last night, was
- 6:26Speaker 3: like that was I would say that that is a
- 6:28Speaker 3: that is an amateur play from from the Cowboys special teams.
- 6:32Speaker 3: But even amateurs I think could avoid something like that.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Okay, And notice how everybody was recalling nineteen ninety three
- 6:39Speaker 1: and Leon Rolette. This is the most celebrating example of
- 6:44Speaker 1: that very same type of mistake. Unfortunately it loves a cowboy,
- 6:47Speaker 1: same deal.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You're wearing the same helmet, man, Like, you need to
- 6:51Speaker 3: sew a little bit about you.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Guys have a history of this kind of thing.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah, let's let's start with from college football and get
- 6:59Speaker 1: your thoughts first of all on the bowl selections for
- 7:04Speaker 1: the teams in the state. And and by the way,
- 7:07Speaker 1: I guess we should do a tip of the cap
- 7:09Speaker 1: to incarnate word at the FCS level, which is advanced
- 7:12Speaker 1: to the next round. And even though it didn't work
- 7:15Speaker 1: out for Charleton and Abilene Christian in their first year
- 7:19Speaker 1: of eligibility for FCS playoffs, I think they showed themselves
- 7:22Speaker 1: well to be able to advance to it there.
- 7:24Speaker 4: And now you got incarnate word taken the next step.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and I will say that overall, it's just a
- 7:30Speaker 3: really healthy year for football in the state of Texas.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Mary Hard and bayl are still live in the divisions
- 7:34Speaker 3: three ranks. You mentioned, you know, you mentioned incarnate words
- 7:37Speaker 3: is still cooking.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And then yet ten of.
- 7:39Speaker 3: The thirteen FBS teams in the state of Texas qualified
- 7:42Speaker 3: for bowls, and that.
- 7:43Speaker 2: That is not nothing, and that is there.
- 7:45Speaker 3: There have been years in the past where that would
- 7:47Speaker 3: have been a cause for celebration. But overall, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 3: between Texas getting two teams in the in the in
- 7:55Speaker 3: the college Football playoffs and another eight teams going bowling,
- 8:00Speaker 3: I think that that the state of the union as
- 8:02Speaker 3: far as Texas football is concerned, is very strong, not
- 8:05Speaker 3: just at the FBS level and not just at even
- 8:07Speaker 3: the power floor level, but all the way down to
- 8:10Speaker 3: the to the SCS, the Division two, the Division three levels.
- 8:13Speaker 3: There's just a real healthiness to the football landscape right
- 8:17Speaker 3: now that we haven't seen in a while. There were
- 8:19Speaker 3: some lean years back in the later part of the
- 8:21Speaker 3: last decade where ten teams making.
- 8:23Speaker 2: The playoff, making that could.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Be uh making you know, the bowl a bowl would
- 8:28Speaker 3: have seemed impossible. But things have certainly rebounded.
- 8:30Speaker 2: In a big way here in the Lone Star state.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Were you as many were.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Feeling uneasy about AMU's chances to get into the playoff
- 8:41Speaker 1: field after Saturday nights.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because you're leaving it up to a committee.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And I've said this before. I have a very cynical
- 8:47Speaker 3: view here. I recognize that, but but I always view these.
- 8:50Speaker 2: People as television executives and not football people. That's what
- 8:53Speaker 2: they're doing. They're making television decisions.
- 8:55Speaker 3: And the right television move is probably to put in
- 8:58Speaker 3: Alabama over SMU. But I think that you know, our
- 9:01Speaker 3: Mike Craven was there in Charlotte for this game and
- 9:04Speaker 3: when when SMU drove to tie the game, uh and
- 9:08Speaker 3: came with the game tying score. Obviously it didn't last,
- 9:10Speaker 3: but he he even put in our in our kind
- 9:12Speaker 3: of our team slack.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Just saying I think they clinched the playoff spot with that.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Drive, that getting there and being that competitive, I think
- 9:20Speaker 3: is going to take away any sort of doubt. And
- 9:22Speaker 3: sure enough, Look, I think it's worth saying, like commend
- 9:25Speaker 3: the committee. I think they did the right thing, and
- 9:28Speaker 3: they put the right teams in there, the teams, the
- 9:30Speaker 3: most deserving teams in there, and they didn't let the
- 9:33Speaker 3: brand name get in the way.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And and I think that Semu is deserving of making the playoffs.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So I think that that was that was a pleasant surprise.
- 9:39Speaker 3: But I think especially considering last year with the the
- 9:43Speaker 3: nonsense they pulled with Florida State, I think that that uh,
- 9:47Speaker 3: there were there were SMU fans and people who observe
- 9:50Speaker 3: S and U who were understandably very leery of the
- 9:53Speaker 3: of the of the playoff bracket reveal, simply because they
- 9:57Speaker 3: wanted to make sure that the committee would do of
- 10:00Speaker 3: them they didn't last year, which is to take a
- 10:02Speaker 3: look at the teams and and and make the right
- 10:05Speaker 3: decision as far as the teams that are most deserving
- 10:08Speaker 3: of the playoff, which I think is certainly SMU instead
- 10:11Speaker 3: of a team that got drilled by Oklahoma or in
- 10:14Speaker 3: a team that lost to.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Vanderbilt, no doubt about it.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, managing edit Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, joining
- 10:19Speaker 1: us here on the program, how do you feel about
- 10:22Speaker 1: each of the two representatives from the state of Texas
- 10:25Speaker 1: chances in this CEP.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Well, we'll start with SMU, and look, there's no two
- 10:32Speaker 3: ways about it, and I do mean exactly what I'm
- 10:33Speaker 3: going to say. It's going to be tough sledding for
- 10:36Speaker 3: SMU quite literally. I think moving up going up to
- 10:41Speaker 3: State College, of course they are a and taking on
- 10:43Speaker 3: the Penn.
- 10:44Speaker 2: State and Happy Valley.
- 10:45Speaker 3: That's going to be I think that's actually it's kind
- 10:48Speaker 3: of a poor matchup. I think for SMU, I don't
- 10:49Speaker 3: think they match up very well with Penn State. The
- 10:51Speaker 3: things that Penn State does well kind of neutralize the
- 10:54Speaker 3: things that SMU does well. And I'm a little concerned
- 10:57Speaker 3: about that. And they are fond of doing a white out,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and it may in fact to be in multiple.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Ways a wide out.
- 11:03Speaker 3: One of the things that I think people don't necessarily
- 11:06Speaker 3: realize and may be taken into account is that, like
- 11:09Speaker 3: there's a reason that all of the Bowl games are
- 11:12Speaker 3: in southern cities or they're in domes. Like there's a reason,
- 11:16Speaker 3: and it's because it's December and Pennsylvania.
- 11:21Speaker 2: It'll be the.
- 11:21Speaker 3: First December game in Pennsylvania, you know, outdoors in quite
- 11:25Speaker 3: some time, you know, maybe outside of you know, whenever
- 11:28Speaker 3: they played Army Navy. But certainly that's if that's any
- 11:31Speaker 3: guide to what we're going to be seeing. We may
- 11:33Speaker 3: be seeing some income near weather. So for s and U,
- 11:36Speaker 3: it's gonna be tough sledding.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I think it's at a tough draw.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I thought Texas is the big winner of the playoffs draw.
- 11:42Speaker 3: I think they got an absolutely dreamy draw when you
- 11:45Speaker 3: take a look at their first couple of matchups, taking
- 11:47Speaker 3: on a Clemson team, I think they match up really
- 11:50Speaker 3: well against I'm just not sure how Clemson moves the
- 11:52Speaker 3: ball all that much on Texas, especially in Austin, I
- 11:56Speaker 3: think that's huge. And then to be paired up with
- 11:58Speaker 3: Arizona State, a team that obviously Big Ten champions and
- 12:01Speaker 3: certainly deserving, but a team that I think everyone thinks
- 12:04Speaker 3: is a bit of an overachiever in this spot. I
- 12:07Speaker 3: think for Texas you're feeling like, hey, you know, and
- 12:10Speaker 3: for them to have to go to the Peace Bowl, right,
- 12:13Speaker 3: it's not like they're playing in their backyard in Arizona.
- 12:15Speaker 3: They're gonna have to travel across the country. I think
- 12:18Speaker 3: for Texas you do not have to squint very hard
- 12:20Speaker 3: to see them in the final four here. I thought
- 12:23Speaker 3: for overall, for the way that the.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Season ended in a bit of a bit of a disappointment, I.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Think that they have to be really buoyed and really
- 12:31Speaker 3: encouraged by grabbing that five seeds.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and if they do win the two games, then
- 12:35Speaker 1: you're talking about them in all probability ticketed for the
- 12:37Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl, which, by the way, they've not played in
- 12:41Speaker 1: the Cotton Bowl game since my first year of play
- 12:44Speaker 1: by played for Texas the two thousand and two. It's
- 12:48Speaker 1: been twenty two years since Texas played in a Cotton
- 12:51Speaker 1: Bowl game. All right, now, in terms of the other bowls,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I'm fully prepared to call Jeff Trailer and give him
- 12:59Speaker 1: seat restaurant recommendations. In Myrtle Beach they play Coastal Carolina.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It is kind of weird having to play a team
- 13:06Speaker 1: on their own home field there. But utsay close strong
- 13:10Speaker 1: enough to be able to I think handle coach to
- 13:12Speaker 1: win that Myrtle Beach Bowl.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, I think so too. And the other well,
- 13:15Speaker 2: here's the other thing, and here's here's the if you need.
- 13:18Speaker 3: To know one thing for you, I'm a big believer
- 13:20Speaker 3: that bulls are a measurement of how motivated your team is.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Here's the only thing you need to know right now.
- 13:25Speaker 2: UTSA is six and six.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Jeff Trailer has literally, at any level, never finished with
- 13:31Speaker 3: a losing record, never, never, ever, ever, not at Gilmer,
- 13:35Speaker 3: not at UTSA, he's never done as.
- 13:37Speaker 2: A head coach. I think they're going to be motivated
- 13:40Speaker 2: going into that kick.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yeah. How about Texas Tech Arkansas and the Liberty Bowl.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, listen, we're getting Southless Conference back together. And
- 13:49Speaker 3: for Joey maguire, who grew up an Arkansas fan, this
- 13:51Speaker 3: is a lot of fun for him.
- 13:53Speaker 2: A lot of Texas high.
- 13:54Speaker 3: School football products also on that Arkansas Arkansas squad.
- 13:58Speaker 2: That'll be a fun matchup.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And and I think the text got to feel really good.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I will again, if it's a measurement of how how
- 14:04Speaker 3: motivated you are to go in going to the game.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I think Joey mcgar is gonna have these boys ready.
- 14:09Speaker 2: They are They've been very good in bowl games under
- 14:11Speaker 2: joe mguire, and I think that they they've got to
- 14:14Speaker 2: feel pretty good going into this game as well.
- 14:15Speaker 1: All Right, and we'll talk about some of the other
- 14:18Speaker 1: bowl games next week when visit. But but uh, let's
- 14:21Speaker 1: talk about the high school playoffs now. And you know,
- 14:25Speaker 1: I don't know if I felt the tremors, after all,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I was in Atlanta, but I know the earth must
- 14:31Speaker 1: have moved when Alito lost in the state quarterfinals last week.
- 14:36Speaker 4: That and as well as De Soto. With both of
- 14:39Speaker 4: those teams getting.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Those are the pair of tremors that were felt across
- 14:44Speaker 3: the Texas high school football landscape. You know, Alito is
- 14:48Speaker 3: one of those teams that anytime they lose in his news,
- 14:51Speaker 3: right when they lose, when Carthage loses, right when Katie loses,
- 14:57Speaker 3: when Duncanville loses.
- 14:58Speaker 2: There's just a handful of teams are like that.
- 15:01Speaker 3: And certainly to go out there and to lose to
- 15:04Speaker 3: Dent and Ryan, a team they've already beaten, it's a
- 15:06Speaker 3: remarkable story there for Ryan, for them to get able
- 15:09Speaker 3: to go out there and basically just play forty eight
- 15:11Speaker 3: minutes of Ryan football. They played great defense, Quinn hen again,
- 15:14Speaker 3: the quarterback play made them big time throws and they
- 15:16Speaker 3: ran the ball with Nemo Warmatee. It was spectacular. And
- 15:19Speaker 3: they are now through to the five A Division one
- 15:21Speaker 3: State semifinals where they get Highland Park in what is
- 15:24Speaker 3: as I mentioned on Texas of Wall dot Com of
- 15:27Speaker 3: a high school football fan of a not so by
- 15:30Speaker 3: gone era remembers Hiland Park versus Ryan as an annual tradition.
- 15:34Speaker 2: They're getting that band in the dock together.
- 15:36Speaker 3: And then Longview over De Soto is the single most
- 15:40Speaker 3: shocking result of the year in the playoffs.
- 15:43Speaker 2: And it's not that long View beat.
- 15:45Speaker 3: De Soto, although that is certainly surprising. It is that
- 15:48Speaker 3: long View drummed De Soto and Boosey Washington, the running
- 15:52Speaker 3: back for Longview, I think he's the most dangerous player in.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Texas right now.
- 15:57Speaker 3: He ran for three hundred yards and five touchdowns. They
- 16:00Speaker 3: just lined up in twenty one personnel and they just
- 16:02Speaker 3: ran the dang ball at DeSoto and De Sota couldn't
- 16:05Speaker 3: do anything about it. So yeah, and it really reshaped
- 16:08Speaker 3: both the sixth A Division two state brackets as well
- 16:10Speaker 3: as five A Division one because the teams that we
- 16:13Speaker 3: thought were penciled in to a spot in Arlington suddenly
- 16:16Speaker 3: are gone and you're going to have some party crashers there.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Absolutely, Wimberley le Vega, I mean that sets up is
- 16:25Speaker 1: a real quirker in Georgetown on Friday night.
- 16:28Speaker 2: A coin flip.
- 16:29Speaker 3: A coin flip, because you, first of all, you want
- 16:31Speaker 3: to talk about I think a matchup of the two.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I just go so far as to say the two
- 16:35Speaker 3: single most underrated coaches in Texas high school football.
- 16:39Speaker 2: In Don Hyde and Doug Warren.
- 16:41Speaker 3: What those guys do at those programs, The consistent success
- 16:46Speaker 3: there is absolutely remarkable.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So it's a great coaching matchup.
- 16:49Speaker 3: And then you've got star power here Cody Silver just
- 16:52Speaker 3: an unbelievable career, what he's done there at Wimberley, looking
- 16:55Speaker 3: to finish that with a state championship.
- 16:57Speaker 2: And then you add it and then you look on
- 16:59Speaker 2: the other side Vega with Bryce and Rowland.
- 17:01Speaker 3: They're running back who has been on another level in
- 17:04Speaker 3: the in the playoffs. Uh, something's got to give there.
- 17:06Speaker 3: But I think both teams are going to move the
- 17:08Speaker 3: ball and it's going.
- 17:08Speaker 2: To come down to stop.
- 17:09Speaker 3: It is a fabulous game, uh there. And and one
- 17:13Speaker 3: of those too close to call type games.
- 17:15Speaker 1: All right, the other two Greater Austin aary teams for
- 17:17Speaker 1: those listing Hell of the Area might be curious. Vandergriff
- 17:20Speaker 1: has done pretty much what we thought Drew Sanders would
- 17:23Speaker 1: do in getting them through the bracket. Now it's a
- 17:26Speaker 1: challenge of a different sort to go up Agains Summer Creek,
- 17:28Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Yeah? It is?
- 17:30Speaker 3: And of course a team to play in the state
- 17:32Speaker 3: championship last year, they've got they their defense in the
- 17:36Speaker 3: front seven is relentless with Chad wood Fork uh and
- 17:38Speaker 3: and then they've got a quarterback in Blake Thomas, who's
- 17:41Speaker 3: who's one of the hottest seaster than a pistol right now.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He's been unbelievable.
- 17:44Speaker 3: This is the final game of the week. Of the
- 17:46Speaker 3: weekend is seven o'clock in Waco on Saturday.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Uh. I am fascinated to see if.
- 17:51Speaker 3: If the offensive line for Vandergris can hold up against
- 17:54Speaker 3: this big front from from from Summer Creek and give
- 17:58Speaker 3: Miles Kavaki some time to throw. That's gonna be the
- 18:00Speaker 3: real question this one. If he's running for his life, the.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Game is probably over in favor of Summer Creek.
- 18:05Speaker 3: But if they can protect and give him some time
- 18:07Speaker 3: to throw, I think their plays to be made against
- 18:09Speaker 3: the Summer Creek secondary.
- 18:10Speaker 2: That's the real question there, I think for the papers.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And then the game that you and I are calling
- 18:14Speaker 1: on Saturday afternoon, Westlake and North Shore meeting yet again.
- 18:19Speaker 1: They know each other pretty well and meeting this time
- 18:22Speaker 1: in Katie, fourth time.
- 18:24Speaker 2: In five years.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And actually they're going back to Katie, which is where
- 18:29Speaker 3: Westlake last beat North Shore. And this is a really
- 18:33Speaker 3: fascinating matchup of quarterbacks with Caleb Bailey before year started
- 18:37Speaker 3: for north Shore, going up against Reese Wives, who I
- 18:39Speaker 3: think is playing some of his best football right now.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And then if you like defenses, you're gonna love this
- 18:44Speaker 3: ballgame because north Shore's defense is outrageous. Okay, to two
- 18:48Speaker 3: FBS cornerbacks, right you two power four quarterbacks quarterbacks in
- 18:52Speaker 3: Nigel Pringle and Devin Sanchez, plus outstanding playmakers all over
- 18:57Speaker 3: that defense.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Go.
- 18:58Speaker 3: And then you got on north Shore, or rather on
- 19:00Speaker 3: Westlake Elliott Shopper, who is I think one of my
- 19:03Speaker 3: very favorite players in the state, just a playmaking dude
- 19:07Speaker 3: there in the middle of that west Lake defense, and
- 19:09Speaker 3: they have been really, really sound all year long, as
- 19:12Speaker 3: we come to expect from Tony Salazar.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I think this is a fabulous ball game.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I want to see if Westlake's able to control or
- 19:19Speaker 3: if they're able to control the line scrimmage on the
- 19:21Speaker 3: defensive side, because what Dorshore is good when they're throwing
- 19:25Speaker 3: the ball, they are unbeatable. When when they're running and
- 19:28Speaker 3: throwing the ball, that's the real question I think for Westlake.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Okay, as you like to say, the meanest thing we
- 19:32Speaker 1: do each week I give you three games, and it's
- 19:35Speaker 1: not the one that we're calling is not in the list.
- 19:38Speaker 4: So I give you three games.
- 19:39Speaker 1: You choose one of the three you can transport to,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and it would either be on the other side of
- 19:45Speaker 1: that six A D one bracket North Crowley Duncanville six
- 19:48Speaker 1: A Division one, five A Division two Argyle, South Oak Cliff,
- 19:55Speaker 1: or and the third choice is the aforementioned la Vega Wimber.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I think I'm going north.
- 20:03Speaker 3: To North Crawley Duncanville because I think we might see
- 20:05Speaker 3: something that hasn't happened in a while, which is I
- 20:07Speaker 3: think we might see somebody beat Duncanville. I think North
- 20:10Speaker 3: Crowley's got the juice. Quentin Gibson, Chris Jemmerson, Daniel Bray
- 20:13Speaker 3: Cornelius won They're loaded offensively. I want to see if
- 20:17Speaker 3: they can dethrone Duncanville. They got embarrassed last year against
- 20:20Speaker 3: those Panthers, got embarrassed by the other Panthers, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 3: And I think that North Crowley want another shot.
- 20:26Speaker 2: But Duncanville, even though.
- 20:27Speaker 3: They have struggled at times in the past couple of weeks,
- 20:30Speaker 3: they've got this weird trick where they've got an Alabama
- 20:32Speaker 3: signee at quarterback and an Oregon signee a wide receiver,
- 20:35Speaker 3: and they just it's the one weird trick to win
- 20:38Speaker 3: a football game, and so can they find a way
- 20:41Speaker 3: to contain that pass catch combo of Keilan Russell and
- 20:44Speaker 3: the Corey Moore's. It's also only one of two battles
- 20:47Speaker 3: of unbeatens across the state of Texas. The other one,
- 20:50Speaker 3: just like we all predicted Stamford and Hamilton, which is
- 20:52Speaker 3: going on in Mineral Wealth.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Yeah, by the way, I didn't mean the gloss over
- 20:57Speaker 1: this the way you're feeling about North Crowley against Duncanville.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Are you feeling that way about Wall against Gunner?
- 21:05Speaker 2: I think they got a shot. I think so.
- 21:08Speaker 3: It's the notable thing is what this game isn't, which
- 21:10Speaker 3: is it's not Gunner Canadian because Wall sent notice to
- 21:14Speaker 3: Region one last week with a dominant win over Canadian.
- 21:17Speaker 2: And the thing Wall is a different Baul club. They're
- 21:20Speaker 2: not running a flexible anymore.
- 21:21Speaker 3: They've got three thousand yard passer in Land in York,
- 21:23Speaker 3: and they are a track team, a legitimate track team
- 21:27Speaker 3: that has speed that I think can give Gunner some problems.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I think Gunner's got to be your favorite because of
- 21:32Speaker 3: there two time defending state champs. But wall is a
- 21:36Speaker 3: different a different kind of scenario and it's a different
- 21:39Speaker 3: challenge for Gunner than this Canadian team would have been.
- 21:41Speaker 3: And I think that's what makes this this kind of
- 21:43Speaker 3: Mattine there four o'clock in Ablee on Friday really interesting.
- 21:47Speaker 1: And finally, which of the Cinderella seasons, if any, come
- 21:51Speaker 1: to an end this week? Canyon West Plains against Thelina, Woodvillagains,
- 21:56Speaker 1: tide Haven or Joaquin a fourth place district against.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they all enter as underdogs in their
- 22:05Speaker 3: respective games.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Walking is unbelievable.
- 22:07Speaker 3: A fourth place scene make into the title or semi
- 22:10Speaker 3: finals is unbelievable. And then I think Woodville's got a
- 22:14Speaker 3: great shot against tight Haven. I think tight Haven's probably
- 22:16Speaker 3: got the experience gap and that's probably it. But remember
- 22:19Speaker 3: Woodville's within the third round of the playoffs for the
- 22:21Speaker 3: first time in program history.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Now that in the fifth round of the playoffs.
- 22:25Speaker 3: But I think one of the things I want to
- 22:27Speaker 3: make sure we point out is Canyon West Plains, who
- 22:29Speaker 3: knocked off Stevenville last week in what I think can
- 22:32Speaker 3: only be described as one of the all time biggest
- 22:35Speaker 3: pedigree upsets in Texas high school football history. I mean,
- 22:38Speaker 3: you're talking about third year varsity program beating one of
- 22:41Speaker 3: the most decorated programs in Texas high school football history
- 22:44Speaker 3: in Stevenville. And now they have an opportunity to pull
- 22:47Speaker 3: the greatest double dip in pedigree disparity history. If they
- 22:51Speaker 3: knock off Stephenville in Salina in consecutive week they might
- 22:55Speaker 3: as well just like hang the banner then, because that
- 22:58Speaker 3: would be truly remarkable if they can pull.
- 23:00Speaker 4: It off, no doubt.
- 23:01Speaker 1: He's Greg Tapper, managing editor David Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I actually we'll be back in the studio with him
- 23:06Speaker 1: and Aaron Hartigan on Saturday night. That's after Tip and
- 23:09Speaker 1: I call Westlake against north Shore for fan Duel Sports
- 23:13Speaker 1: Southwest Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Appreciate the timetap. Looking forward to the weekend meet too,
- 23:19Speaker 4: my friends.
- 23:19Speaker 1: All right, that's Greag Tapper from Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine.
- 23:23Speaker 1: We'll get back to some college notes coming up on
- 23:25Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
