- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in Hello and
- 0:16welcome back to Tabernacle talk. Today we are concluding first
- 0:19Timothy chapter one with verses 18 through 20.
- 0:24Verses 18 through 20, the letter of first Timothy is written from
- 0:28the apostle Paul to his son in the faith.
- 0:31Timothy and Timothy had been left in Ephesus in order to deal
- 0:36with some false doctrine and some false teachers that were
- 0:40kind of making havoc, wreaking havoc, leaving mayhem all over
- 0:45the place in the Ephesian church.
- 0:47And that was a church that was near and dear to the apostle
- 0:49Paul's heart that he had planted, that he had spent three
- 0:52years there in that church. He wrote the letter to the
- 0:56Ephesians to that church. Timothy was there.
- 0:59And so Paul wrote first and second Timothy to there.
- 1:03And then the apostle John was one of the elders, one of the
- 1:09bishops or overseers there in the church at Ephesus as well in
- 1:14his later years. And so Ephesus was a bustling, I
- 1:19almost said suburb. It was a bustling metropolis
- 1:22there in the 1st century. It was a home of a lot of idol
- 1:27worship. There was a temple to the Greek
- 1:31goddess Diana that was there. Greatest Diana of the Ephesians
- 1:35was they call that was raised by a giant mob as many Christians
- 1:41who had turned their backs on idol worship as they burned up
- 1:45the idols and the, you know, books of witchcraft that they
- 1:50had owned in their pre Christ days.
- 1:55Yeah, there was just so much going on in Ephesus.
- 1:58Well, for this young church, there were false teachers that
- 2:03had come in and they were teaching, as Paul describes it
- 2:08at the beginning of chapter 1, endless speculations, myths,
- 2:13genealogies, empty, fruitless discussions was what was
- 2:19happening there in that church. And so Paul told Timothy, I am
- 2:23sent. I'm leaving you there in Ephesus
- 2:26so that you are able to deal with these things.
- 2:29And then he says these people are obsessed with like the Old
- 2:32Testament, both what the Old Testament says and with the
- 2:36myths and genealogies and stories that people made, if you
- 2:41will, in fan fiction of what occurred in the Old Testament.
- 2:45And so he says those people, they want to teach, quote UN
- 2:48quote, the law, but they don't even know what the law is about.
- 2:51The purpose of the law is that we would recognize our need of
- 2:57Jesus. He says the law is not for the
- 2:59righteous but for the ungodly. And he says the point of our
- 3:07religion, if you will, the point of our relationship with God and
- 3:12everything that we do is love out of a pure heart and a good
- 3:16conscience and sincere faith to this really heavy mission that
- 3:21Timothy had. Paul says you should take heart
- 3:24though, that even as you're encountering some people and
- 3:28there will be difficulties, I want you to know that God
- 3:31already saved the worst possible false teacher and persecutor and
- 3:36blasphemer because God saved me. God saved Paul.
- 3:39And so he says, Timothy, you can experience victory in what
- 3:44you're doing because God has already saved the worst of the
- 3:47false teachers. And so he will be with you in
- 3:50your journey in verses 18 through 20.
- 3:53I'm going to read through this, and then we'll see what this end
- 3:56of the chapter has for us. Timothy, my son, I'm giving you
- 4:00this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made
- 4:04about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the good
- 4:08fight, having faith and a good conscience, which some have
- 4:12rejected and have shipwrecked the faith.
- 4:15Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I've delivered
- 4:20to Satan so that they may be taught not to blasphemy.
- 4:26So here he says, Timothy, you have been called to this
- 4:30mission, but I want you to remember that you didn't call
- 4:33yourself to this mission, that other people saw who you were.
- 4:37They saw your faith. They saw the gifting that God
- 4:41has given you. And so you were, as we'll read
- 4:45later in the book, there were a group of pastors, a group of
- 4:50elders, those that are mature and sincere and godly in their
- 4:55faith, that recognize what the Holy Spirit was doing in you.
- 4:58And as they laid hands on you, as they, if you will,
- 5:01commissioned the work that you were going to do, a phrase that
- 5:05would be more often used today. They ordained you for this
- 5:08ministry work. I want you to remember that.
- 5:11I want you to remember that this thing didn't start with you and
- 5:14it's not going to end with you. And so he says, Timothy, I want
- 5:18you to remember the prophecies, what was spoken from the Lord to
- 5:23you through the mouths of other believers, so that you would be
- 5:27encouraged and strengthened for the work that you've been called
- 5:30to. Something that I had not thought
- 5:34much about before the last two years, but that has been a
- 5:38recurring source of joy for me is though not every person is,
- 5:44you know, called to ministry, Though not every person has been
- 5:47ordained, commissioned for the work of the gospel.
- 5:51All of us in our spiritual lives have been the recipient of
- 5:55someone else saying I see God working and alive in you and he
- 6:00has a purpose for you. If in no other time period, then
- 6:05in our baptism that in that moment that we confess Jesus as
- 6:09Lord that we are one of the Jesus people and we want to
- 6:12follow Jesus. That whether it was our pastor
- 6:16for many people, maybe a parent or a friend or a Deacon or
- 6:19someone that someone else from the body of Christ assented that
- 6:23they said, yes, we do believe that based on your profession of
- 6:27faith that you are my brother or sister in the Lord that the Holy
- 6:30Spirit does live in you. And if the Holy Spirit lives in
- 6:33you, then that means that God has a plan for your life and
- 6:35that every single single one of us are able to say, God, I know
- 6:39that you are real and that you are alive in me.
- 6:42And if I, if I have no other proof, if I have no other thing
- 6:47that convinces me of that, I can remember back to when someone
- 6:51else said, yes, I do believe that you are my brother or
- 6:53sister in the Lord. And so I baptize you in the name
- 6:56of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit buried with, buried
- 7:01in the likeness of his death, raised to walk in newness of
- 7:04life. I'll tell you guys for for my
- 7:08part, I remember when in Bible college I went through what
- 7:15would be very, very similar to perhaps an ordination council
- 7:19where there were several of the Bible faculty that all I could
- 7:23bring in was 1 unmarked Bible. And they asked me questions over
- 7:29the course of hour, hour and a half and about my about my
- 7:35doctrine, about my beliefs from the word of God and, and that
- 7:41they said, yes, we firmly believe that this is someone who
- 7:45is able and capable to go into the work of the ministry.
- 7:50I remember when I interviewed with Pastor Dennis Fountain in
- 7:56Moses Lake, WA at Moses Lake Baptist Church and he said, yes,
- 8:01I, I believe that this is someone that I could trust and
- 8:04that I could rely on to be able to lead our congregation both in
- 8:09worship and in discipleship. And I remember when Moses Lake
- 8:14Baptist sent out my, my wife and I to come here to Tabernacle
- 8:20Baptist and they said, we, we believe that God has equipped
- 8:24and gifted you for this work. And that Tabernacle Baptist,
- 8:28they interviewed me and they said, yes, we believe that you
- 8:31are the person that God has for our church.
- 8:35And in times when it gets tough or when there's difficulties
- 8:40within my soul or within the church or within the culture, I
- 8:45am so thankful that I can look back and I can say, God, I
- 8:48remember all of these times that this Christian faith, it didn't
- 8:52start with me and it's not going to end with me.
- 8:54And you have my brothers and sisters all around me and they
- 8:58have spoken truth into my life that I have a mission and a
- 9:01purpose. And can I encourage you, maybe
- 9:05you wish that you had some people that were equipping you
- 9:10or encouraging you in your faith more.
- 9:14And I heartily agree with you that you should receive that.
- 9:18And I want to be that for people.
- 9:20I want to, I got to tell you guys, I just want to do better
- 9:23about that myself as I think about this.
- 9:26I am one of these. I am, if you will, in kind of an
- 9:30Old Testament sense. I'm a prophet.
- 9:32I'm one that declares this is what God is saying.
- 9:35And not only that, but I am one that's from the New Testament
- 9:39would be an elder, a presbyter would be the older word for it.
- 9:45And so I have a mission from God to help equip God's people for
- 9:50the work that I need to be faithful to say this is what I
- 9:53see in you. This is how I can see God's
- 9:55Spirit at work in you. And I'm so encouraged and I want
- 9:59you to continue in this because other people need to hear my
- 10:03voice. Other people need to hear your
- 10:04voice, that you can be for someone else what you wish
- 10:08someone would do for you. And as you do that, that will
- 10:11also help motivate other people to be able to reciprocate the
- 10:16action that they see as you encourage them in their faith
- 10:19and what you see the Holy Spirit doing in them, that they will be
- 10:22able to see what God is doing in you.
- 10:25And if all of us as believers, we're doing that and we were
- 10:27encouraging one another. And if you will, if we're
- 10:30prophesying over one another, to say this is what God says and
- 10:34this is what I see in you. And so I see where God's Word
- 10:38and you are lining up here, and I'm so excited that you're
- 10:42following the Lord in these ways.
- 10:44I just think that is such a rich thought that we are not meant to
- 10:48go through this battle alone. Pastors aren't meant to go
- 10:51through it alone. Everyday believers are not meant
- 10:54to go through this alone. So encourage others.
- 10:57So here Paul says, I'm giving you this instruction in keeping
- 10:59with the prophecies previously made about you so that by
- 11:02recalling them you may fight the good fight.
- 11:05When you know that you're not alone and you have teammates,
- 11:08You are able to fight the good fight.
- 11:09When you know that God lives in you and is wanting to work
- 11:12through you. You can fight the good fight
- 11:14when there are enemies, but you know that you also have friends.
- 11:18You have these coworkers in the faith that can motivate you to
- 11:21fight the good fight. There are fights that are not
- 11:24worth fighting as Christians. There's the as at the beginning
- 11:28of the chapter, the fruitless discussions and the empty or
- 11:31side, the endless genealogies and the empty teaching.
- 11:35That's not good fights to have, if you will.
- 11:38Inter Christian fights and spats of ill will are not good things
- 11:44to have. You can have a conviction on
- 11:49perhaps whether to celebrate Easter or Christmas or Halloween
- 11:54or any other of the of the Christian holidays.
- 11:57You can have conviction on Calvinism or Arminianism or
- 12:01Provision ISM or you know, any one of 1000 other things.
- 12:05You can have convictions on a whole ton of things, but those
- 12:10aren't fights to have. Those are discussions to have,
- 12:15but those are not fights worth having.
- 12:17There is one good fight, which is Jesus Christ and his gospel.
- 12:23And we can hold to our convictions, we can hold to our
- 12:25beliefs, but the fights, the things against an enemy, those
- 12:30we need to reserve for fighting against Satan and the gates of
- 12:34hell. Because I promise you, if we get
- 12:36distracted and we start fighting against other believers who also
- 12:40holds a faith in Christ alone through grace alone, faith alone
- 12:45by by the grace of God alone. If we waste our time fighting
- 12:51against other believers, we're going to have no energy for the
- 12:53fights that really matter. And there is a good fight and
- 12:56the fight is against false doctrine.
- 12:58The fight is not against fellow believers.
- 13:00Verse 19, he says having faith and a good conscience, belief in
- 13:05God and what God can accomplish and a good conscience, which is
- 13:08that I am what I'm doing. I know within my soul that I am
- 13:14following the Lord's direction. That my conscience isn't saying,
- 13:17hey Brian, you shouldn't have done that.
- 13:19You shouldn't have said that, you shouldn't have gone there.
- 13:21That instead what I'm doing I'm able to do with a clear
- 13:26conscience that I don't have to try and cover over it.
- 13:28I don't have to try and excuse it.
- 13:30But that part of me that goes that wasn't great, that I am
- 13:35operating in the Holy Spirit, that I am not feeling that, that
- 13:40I'm not feeling. You didn't do that right?
- 13:43Not because I'm ignoring it, because I am operating in
- 13:47accordance with a clean conscience, a good conscience.
- 13:51But Paul says some have rejected faith and a good conscience and
- 13:57they have shipwrecked their faith.
- 14:01When you no longer believe that God is able to work, He's not
- 14:05able to save anymore. He's not able to accomplish His
- 14:08will in or through you. That you just say, OK, I'm going
- 14:13to throw out my hands and I guess I will lose this battle
- 14:16with sin. I'll just be an angry person.
- 14:17I'll be a bitter person. I'll be a lustful person.
- 14:20I will be a gossip. And that's just who I am.
- 14:23I'm going to be undisciplined. I'm going to lack any
- 14:25self-control. I'm going to be cruel or unkind
- 14:29to others. And man, that's just who I am.
- 14:32No, my friend, don't lose faith or a good conscience, says the
- 14:37ones that give up faith. The ones that give up belief in
- 14:40Jesus. That is a shipwrecked faith that
- 14:43it's, if you will, it's dead in the water.
- 14:44Paul knew what it was to be shipwrecked.
- 14:48And so as he thinks about the devastation that occurred, I'm
- 14:53certain that that is at least somewhat of what was in his mind
- 14:57as he describes this to Timothy. And he says when you abandon
- 15:00faith in God and in Jesus, it's a shipwreck.
- 15:04It's devastation. And he says, when we give up on
- 15:07a good conscience, when we give up on doing and saying what is
- 15:11right and being able to hear that wasn't what you were
- 15:16supposed to do, when we silence that voice, when we silence
- 15:19conscience, when we can never be told that we are wrong, we make
- 15:23shipwreck of our faith. He says, among these, these ones
- 15:28that have rejected faith and a good conscience, he says, our
- 15:32Hymenaeus and Alexander, he says, whom I have delivered to
- 15:36Satan so that they may be taught not to blasphemy.
- 15:40Now you as I might be like, what in the world?
- 15:43What does it mean to be delivered to Satan?
- 15:46That is, these two individuals having rejected faith, having
- 15:51rejected a good conscience, and following Jesus as their Lord,
- 15:55Paul says I've delivered them to Satan, that is, to the realm of
- 16:00Satan. That instead of being Kingdom
- 16:02citizens, they were excommunicated, that they were
- 16:06barred from communion, barred from the Lord's Table.
- 16:09That the church was not to treat them like they were believers in
- 16:14Jesus. The church was to treat these
- 16:15individuals. The Ephesian church was to treat
- 16:18these individuals like they were unbelievers.
- 16:24Church discipline is a topic that unfortunately has been very
- 16:30misused in some circles before. But it has a valuable it has a
- 16:35incredibly valuable reality that we read about in 1st and 2nd
- 16:40Corinthians here in First Timothy and Matthew 18, and a
- 16:44number of other places. We are only to consider church
- 16:49members to be those that are actively following Jesus, if you
- 16:57will, with a good conscience and in faith in Jesus, and those
- 17:01that do not have faith in Jesus alone.
- 17:04We are to view those not as church members.
- 17:07It does not matter if they were baptized.
- 17:10It doesn't matter if they put their name on a member role.
- 17:13If they repudiate Christ as Savior, they are not to be
- 17:18considered church members. And if they are living lives in
- 17:22open rebellion that they, if you will, they're not living with a
- 17:24good conscience. They are rejecting Jesus's
- 17:29Kingdom ethics. We are to consider them to not
- 17:32be citizens of the Kingdom of heaven.
- 17:36So that's what church membership is, is from Matthew 16 and 18,
- 17:41what Jesus describes as the keys to the Kingdom where he says
- 17:45whatever you bind on earth will be down in heaven and whatever
- 17:48you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
- 17:51That who has the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
- 17:54It is the local congregation of believers that together we say,
- 17:59yes, we baptize this person because they have faith in Jesus
- 18:04and we can see that they are operating in conscience
- 18:07according to these Kingdom ethics that they're what they
- 18:12say with their mouths and what they live with their lives.
- 18:14It is consistent with those who profess to be Christians here.
- 18:18Paul says Hymenaeus and Alexander, they've given up the
- 18:21faith and the a good conscience. The what they're saying with
- 18:24their mouth about Jesus and how they are living their lives has
- 18:28nothing to do with Jesus or with the Kingdom of heaven.
- 18:31And so he says, I have delivered them to Satan.
- 18:33This is not saying that he killed them.
- 18:35It's not even saying necessarily that they were barred from
- 18:40coming to the gathering of the church, but he does say they are
- 18:44considered not part of the Kingdom.
- 18:48They are, I'll say, dismembered jokingly.
- 18:52They are excommunicated. They are barred from partaking
- 18:55of the Lord's Table, which is the privilege of those that are
- 18:58members of the local church, as we would read throughout First
- 19:02Corinthians. So why was this?
- 19:06Why would someone be excommunicated?
- 19:09And Paul says here he'll give other reasons and other places
- 19:12as well. But he says one of the reasons
- 19:14is so that they may learn not to blasphemy, that right now they
- 19:19are treating Jesus in a way that is blasphemous.
- 19:24And it's not that blasphemers cannot become believers.
- 19:28We read that Paul before he came to know Jesus was a blasphemer,
- 19:33But he says these people are living and talking and believing
- 19:37like I did before I came to Jesus.
- 19:41And so he says, so for these for these people, for these people
- 19:45that used to be in the church at Ephesus, he says I have made it
- 19:49so that they are not considered members of the church anymore.
- 19:54And the goal of church discipline is multiple, many
- 19:59fold if you will. But it is for.
- 20:03A couple really important reasons #1 so that the onlooking
- 20:06world knows that the church genuinely believes what we say
- 20:11about believing and acting in accordance with our belief that
- 20:15Jesus is Lord and King of our lives.
- 20:18That they say, Oh yeah, if someone doesn't believe that or
- 20:20doesn't act like that, then they're not going to be a member
- 20:23of a Church, of a Bible believing church.
- 20:27It is also so that the person that is excommunicated, that
- 20:30they are no longer a member of the church, that they go, man,
- 20:33I, I wish that I was on the inside.
- 20:35Right now I'm on the outside. I can't partake of the Lord's
- 20:38Supper because I've been excommunioned.
- 20:41And I wish that I had the relationship with God or the
- 20:44relationship with these people that I see them having and that
- 20:49I once enjoyed. I want to get back.
- 20:52I, I repent of my sin. I repent of my false doctrines
- 20:56and false beliefs because I want to be back with God's people.
- 21:00And so here Paul says this is what we learn when people are
- 21:05excommunicated is that they learn I can either be team Jesus
- 21:10or team devil. And if I don't want to be team
- 21:13devil, then I repent and I believe in Jesus.
- 21:17And when we do that, what a joy. Much more could be said, but
- 21:21that's all that we have time for today.
- 21:23I encourage you to look up the book Church Membership or the
- 21:27book Church Discipline by Jonathan Lehman.
- 21:30That's LEMAN at 9 marks, and they have excellent resources on
- 21:37all of the many benefits that we find as we utilize the keys of
- 21:42the Kingdom that Jesus talks about in Matthew 16 and 18.
- 21:47What that should look like and the many blessings that it
- 21:51brings to the church, to the person that is disciplined and
- 21:55to the onlooking world and ultimately for the glory of God
- 21:59himself. But here Paul says to Timothy,
- 22:03you have right beliefs and right behavior.
- 22:06The Lord has given you so many people in your life to be able
- 22:09to speak truth into you. And so know that God has this
- 22:13mission for you, and other people have seen it too.
- 22:15So you can accomplish it. Hold faith and hold a good
- 22:18conscience, because without those, you're going to make a
- 22:21shipwreck of your life just like these other two people.
- 22:25So this is such a sobering portion of First Timothy.
- 22:31Tomorrow's episode will frankly be a little bit more fun in
- 22:35First Timothy chapter 2. But I want, I want you to sit
- 22:38with these thoughts even today. Be an encouragement to other
- 22:44people. Live in the reality that God has
- 22:46given to you and recognize that being a Christian, being a
- 22:51member of the being a citizen of the Kingdom of heaven means that
- 22:55we believe in Jesus and Jesus alone and that we act like we
- 23:01believe in Jesus alone. Thanks for tuning in today and
- 23:04see you next episode.
