- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, what's up.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Hello, Welcome back to Cardinal Territory. This is episode seventeen
- 0:09Speaker 2: and it's a very special one.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm Katie Wu, He's.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Trevor Rosenthal, and our very first guest interview in the
- 0:15Speaker 2: long two month history of our podcast is Saint Louis
- 0:19Speaker 2: Cardinals manager Alie Marmel.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We are so excited you are here, Oliver. How are you?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Thanks for doing I'm doing no, absolutely, I'm doing well.
- 0:26Speaker 3: How are you guys doing.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Great? Yeah?
- 0:30Speaker 5: I mean talking to the manager of the Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 0:34Speaker 5: my favorite baseball organization, and you know.
- 0:38Speaker 3: You get to talk to me every Monday.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I get you know, that's the advantage here is.
- 0:42Speaker 5: You know, Allie and I we have a close relationship.
- 0:45Speaker 5: I have a tremendous amount of respect for you. And
- 0:49Speaker 5: we actually talked about a week ago and we're talking
- 0:53Speaker 5: about you know, this is your nineteenth spring training.
- 0:56Speaker 4: You've been man a lot of success.
- 0:59Speaker 5: You've done an incredible job as in the Saint Louis
- 1:02Speaker 5: Cardinals organization specifically, So congratulations.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:06Speaker 5: I don't want to I don't want to overlook that
- 1:07Speaker 5: because that's that's not very common. You've you've been around
- 1:10Speaker 5: getting comfortable. I think one of your strengths, and and
- 1:13Speaker 5: this even speaks to our relationship, is is your your
- 1:16Speaker 5: ability to make feeld players feel like they're they're they're
- 1:20Speaker 5: they're scene right, and that you that you really just
- 1:23Speaker 5: care about them, and and that seeps over into your
- 1:25Speaker 5: personal life. But in the position that that you're in
- 1:27Speaker 5: as the manager, I think when I when I think
- 1:30Speaker 5: of the Saint Louis Cardinals and the guys in that clubhouse,
- 1:32Speaker 5: I know that.
- 1:33Speaker 4: They that they feel that. Besides that, in your nineteen years,
- 1:37Speaker 4: what do you what do you think?
- 1:39Speaker 5: What do you think there is to improve on? What
- 1:41Speaker 5: are you looking to to do better this year?
- 1:43Speaker 3: Man?
- 1:44Speaker 6: Personally, every off season you go through a list of
- 1:49Speaker 6: like what do you what went well?
- 1:51Speaker 3: What didn't you know? And there's there's plenty to improve on.
- 1:55Speaker 3: We did some things well as a staff.
- 1:57Speaker 6: But when I look at you just mentioned the couple
- 2:00Speaker 6: of things that stand out to you, those are actually
- 2:03Speaker 6: things I want to continue to get better at, Man
- 2:05Speaker 6: because like as the bench coach, if I'm being honest,
- 2:07Speaker 6: you are the mediator between the manager and the players.
- 2:11Speaker 3: You're constant, You're in constant communication with them. You have
- 2:14Speaker 3: a little bit more time.
- 2:15Speaker 6: To build those relationships, and then you become the manager
- 2:19Speaker 6: and it's a lot of your time goes to kind
- 2:23Speaker 6: of media and doing press conference and doing a lot
- 2:25Speaker 6: of things and on that side of things that you
- 2:27Speaker 6: don't have that responsibility as a bench coach. So what
- 2:30Speaker 6: I want to get better at is creating space in
- 2:33Speaker 6: my schedule where there's nothing.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I tend to book things like back to back to
- 2:38Speaker 3: back to back and just like go from one thing
- 2:40Speaker 3: to another, player.
- 2:41Speaker 6: Meetings, staff meetings, medical, and I'm starting to create space
- 2:47Speaker 6: in the schedule where I just have nothing, like absolutely
- 2:50Speaker 6: nothing booked and it allows me to spend time with guys,
- 2:53Speaker 6: whether that's a staff member, a player, or just an
- 2:56Speaker 6: opportunity that presents itself where I don't have to move
- 2:59Speaker 6: anything my schedule.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I can just be present, Right.
- 3:01Speaker 6: So I think the better I get at that relationally, like,
- 3:06Speaker 6: I think it's it's a good thing for everybody.
- 3:09Speaker 3: So I'm trying to improve at doing nothing.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 5: No, I mean I think it's interesting you kind of mentioned,
- 3:16Speaker 5: you know, going from your role as as a bench
- 3:18Speaker 5: coach to now a manager. I imagine those two things are
- 3:22Speaker 5: completely different.
- 3:23Speaker 4: And uh, I mean what are.
- 3:25Speaker 5: What are some things that you've kind of learned along
- 3:28Speaker 5: the way in terms of like your your coaching philosophy
- 3:32Speaker 5: or or leadership that that has really affected the way
- 3:35Speaker 5: that you manage.
- 3:37Speaker 6: Yeah, over communicate is always a good thing. Making sure
- 3:44Speaker 6: that players are never guessing where they stand. At times
- 3:48Speaker 6: you can assume that players know something or that they
- 3:51Speaker 6: know how you feel, but being able to express that
- 3:53Speaker 6: in a way that's meaningful. I think my personality tends
- 3:56Speaker 6: to be fairly direct. I just think it's easier to
- 4:00Speaker 6: do life that way. But what I've gotten better at
- 4:04Speaker 6: is understand that that's not everybody's form of communication, right
- 4:08Speaker 6: and at times like I have to take a step
- 4:10Speaker 6: back and put myself in the shoes of that player,
- 4:13Speaker 6: that staff member and how I communicate. So yeah, man,
- 4:17Speaker 6: I think that's the name of the game, is being
- 4:18Speaker 6: able to actually be honest with yourself and like, man,
- 4:21Speaker 6: what do I do well? What do I don't do well?
- 4:23Speaker 6: And how can improve on those things? And that's what
- 4:24Speaker 6: the off season's for. And you have to have people
- 4:26Speaker 6: in your life that will just shoot you streat as well, man,
- 4:28Speaker 6: like just tell you what you're missing, what your blind
- 4:31Speaker 6: spots are, and that's always a plus.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Oliver.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I think we've talked about this a lot during the
- 4:39Speaker 2: seven days of camp. This is a difference from training,
- 4:41Speaker 2: but different doesn't necessarily mean bad. But when you're looking
- 4:46Speaker 2: at the transition for phase is what John Mozailac likes
- 4:49Speaker 2: to call this, and you're looking at the overall youth
- 4:51Speaker 2: in your clubhouse, what's different for you as a manager
- 4:56Speaker 2: and how you're approaching this year?
- 4:58Speaker 6: Man, I think that space I'm talking about where I
- 5:02Speaker 6: have nothing in my schedule, just being able to spend
- 5:04Speaker 6: more time with those guys. Our staff is really emphasizing
- 5:09Speaker 6: making sure that these guys don't.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Care about them, that we're here point we have their.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Back, and with these young guys, they're gonna have times
- 5:16Speaker 6: where it just doesn't go their way and how they
- 5:18Speaker 6: respond to that's going to be important. So being able
- 5:20Speaker 6: to give them the tools to handle those situations before
- 5:24Speaker 6: they happen, it's going to be important. So that's the
- 5:27Speaker 6: biggest difference is understanding we don't have a ton of
- 5:29Speaker 6: veterans in there, and that just allows the staff to
- 5:32Speaker 6: be a little bit more active when it comes to
- 5:33Speaker 6: the things that you would rely on the veterans to do.
- 5:36Speaker 6: So it's to your point, it's different, but different doesn't
- 5:40Speaker 6: in any way mean bad.
- 5:43Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm really looking forward to the year.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah, there's.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I like, you know, there's a strong veteran core, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 5: especially with the starting pitching.
- 5:56Speaker 4: You know we have.
- 5:58Speaker 5: I I'd be it'd be a shame to bring up
- 6:00Speaker 5: the Nole and Aeronauto situation because it's so fresh. But
- 6:04Speaker 5: the reason I really am interested to bring it up,
- 6:07Speaker 5: and you've been kind of we've been talking about.
- 6:10Speaker 4: This so far.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Early in the episode we're talking to Olie Marmele on
- 6:13Speaker 5: Cardinal Territory, part of the Foul Territory Network. But you're
- 6:17Speaker 5: talking about the clubhouse and the culture and of course
- 6:19Speaker 5: you know saying those Cardinals just a lot of rich tradition.
- 6:22Speaker 5: We talk about the Cardinal way, doing things the right way,
- 6:25Speaker 5: playing baseball the way it's meant to be played. And
- 6:27Speaker 5: the reason I bring up Aeronaudo is because you look
- 6:29Speaker 5: around the league, look around the Baseball League, look around other.
- 6:32Speaker 4: League sports teams.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Players in his situation don't always handle it as gracefully
- 6:38Speaker 5: as he has.
- 6:39Speaker 4: He's come in.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Man, he's been a true professional, and I just want
- 6:43Speaker 5: to give him a lot of credit, a lot of credit.
- 6:45Speaker 4: I know, I know that doesn't happen solo. I know
- 6:48Speaker 4: that's not just him.
- 6:49Speaker 5: I know you've said you've had conversations with him consistently
- 6:52Speaker 5: throughout the offseason, and then I'm sure in preparation for
- 6:55Speaker 5: the media scrum on the first day that he arrived,
- 6:58Speaker 5: you know, there was some work that was done ahead
- 6:59Speaker 5: of time. So you know, I just want to point
- 7:01Speaker 5: that out because it could have gone a different way,
- 7:04Speaker 5: and I know for someone in your shoes, he probably
- 7:07Speaker 5: makes that a lot easier. So we can talk about him,
- 7:10Speaker 5: we can talk about the veterans in the starting rotation.
- 7:13Speaker 3: But I was worried zero, right, Like, I'm just being honest.
- 7:18Speaker 6: He's a pro, so I know a lot of questions
- 7:21Speaker 6: were asked leading into his arrival, like, man, is it
- 7:24Speaker 6: going to be awkward? It's not like Nolan's a pro,
- 7:28Speaker 6: And as soon as he walked in like it was
- 7:32Speaker 6: business as usual. I mean, this is a guy that's
- 7:34Speaker 6: a high competitor that makes other people great, so having
- 7:39Speaker 6: him come back and walk through those doors was awesome.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Man.
- 7:43Speaker 6: I was happy to kill him a hug and welcome
- 7:45Speaker 6: him into camp and get this ball rolling, But I
- 7:49Speaker 6: think it was made a little bit more of a
- 7:51Speaker 6: big deal than what it kind of turned out to be,
- 7:54Speaker 6: is especially within the walls, you know.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think again it goes back to how
- 8:00Speaker 2: the communication was handled, and Nolan is very similar to
- 8:03Speaker 2: you just be straight up with him, and I like
- 8:06Speaker 2: what you said when he came to camp. You have
- 8:07Speaker 2: a one of the best third basemen in this generation,
- 8:11Speaker 2: a future Hall of Famer walking through the camp. Why
- 8:13Speaker 2: wouldn't you be excited? And now your job maybe gets
- 8:17Speaker 2: a little bit more difficult. And this is not to
- 8:18Speaker 2: suggests that Nolan Arnatto coming back to the Cardinals is
- 8:21Speaker 2: a bad thing.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I don't think anyone is saying that. But what you're now.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Managing, and this is something you and Mo have alluded to,
- 8:27Speaker 2: is you need to go back and figure out how
- 8:30Speaker 2: the opportunity and runway exists for giving those young players
- 8:33Speaker 2: the opportunities that you want them to And I'm wondering,
- 8:36Speaker 2: from your perspective, how difficult is that going to be
- 8:40Speaker 2: in spring? And what excites you about the challenges that
- 8:43Speaker 2: lie ahead and figuring that out.
- 8:45Speaker 6: It's gonna be tough. I mean, I'll be honest with you.
- 8:49Speaker 6: The math does look different, and that's not a bad thing.
- 8:54Speaker 6: It just looks different and you have to account for
- 8:56Speaker 6: some different things. Now that Nolan's our third baseman.
- 9:00Speaker 3: That's a good thing. Now we have to figure out
- 9:03Speaker 3: who it impacts the most and how we're going to
- 9:06Speaker 3: kind of give at bats to the rest of the
- 9:08Speaker 3: group in a way that's meaningful for the long play
- 9:12Speaker 3: that we've all talked about.
- 9:14Speaker 6: So part of this might figure itself out as we
- 9:18Speaker 6: get through camp. Hopefully we stay healthy all the way throughout,
- 9:21Speaker 6: and some tough decisions have to be made. But I
- 9:24Speaker 6: like the fact that we have some options and we'll
- 9:27Speaker 6: talk through it the closer we get and we'll make
- 9:29Speaker 6: a decision that makes sense. But at the moment, just
- 9:31Speaker 6: let them play and see where it leads.
- 9:36Speaker 5: So, you know, as a as a pitcher, I'm biased.
- 9:39Speaker 5: You know, we were just into a couple of days
- 9:41Speaker 5: of full camp, but it's been pictures and catchers, And
- 9:44Speaker 5: there's reason pictures and catchers arrive a week earlier. We're
- 9:47Speaker 5: pretty important, right, Like, I mean, you could say that
- 9:50Speaker 5: we got to get our extra.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Work in and get our talking for sure.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a picture and and when I look at
- 9:56Speaker 5: when I look at the catching situation for this team
- 9:59Speaker 5: this year, it's it's really the first time and maybe
- 10:02Speaker 5: I don't know, thirty years to go all the way
- 10:04Speaker 5: back to Metheeni, you go back. You know, we had
- 10:06Speaker 5: we had Yati and then Wilson Contreres, like three veteran
- 10:10Speaker 5: guys that have been at the helm of this organization
- 10:13Speaker 5: for a long time, and this year we have guys
- 10:16Speaker 5: that aren't necessarily veterans, And so I'm just interested, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 5: from from the catchers that you've had in camp so far.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Obviously there's paid Pijes and Herrera.
- 10:26Speaker 5: But you know, what does the support look like for
- 10:29Speaker 5: them to be able to grow into this role?
- 10:32Speaker 6: Dude, they're really good at what they do. Like you,
- 10:36Speaker 6: they're they're different as far as what they bring to
- 10:38Speaker 6: the table. But you look at Paz, this is a
- 10:40Speaker 6: guy we talked about it a couple of days ago. Man,
- 10:42Speaker 6: he comes through the minor leagues. He's somewhat sloppy with
- 10:46Speaker 6: his diet and just the way he goes about it,
- 10:48Speaker 6: and he makes a change to really tighten those things
- 10:52Speaker 6: up and take his career serious. Knowing that man like
- 10:55Speaker 6: I need to give myself the best shot to be
- 10:57Speaker 6: a big leader, and he makes certain adjustments and he
- 11:00Speaker 6: gets that opportunity and he gains the trust of the staff.
- 11:04Speaker 6: He gains the trust of the pitching staff to the
- 11:07Speaker 6: point where you trust him in any game situation with
- 11:10Speaker 6: the game on the line like that he is prepared
- 11:13Speaker 6: enough to call what needs to be called. He takes
- 11:16Speaker 6: ownership over that. His preparation is incredible. So credit to
- 11:22Speaker 6: him for the work put in Herrera, another guy who
- 11:26Speaker 6: has matured a ton over the last couple of years
- 11:28Speaker 6: when it comes to the way he prepares for a
- 11:31Speaker 6: game and starts to understand his pitching staff, understands the
- 11:34Speaker 6: opposition and how to bring those two together based on
- 11:37Speaker 6: game situations. So they both have made tremendous leaps and
- 11:43Speaker 6: it allows us to make the move with Wilson in
- 11:45Speaker 6: order to keep him healthy and playing one sixty two
- 11:47Speaker 6: over the first in DH.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And give these two young guys a shot.
- 11:51Speaker 6: But yeah, do they have the experience in the years
- 11:54Speaker 6: of a Matheni or the odd or any of those
- 11:56Speaker 6: guys now, But we're planning for the future and these
- 11:59Speaker 6: two guys are going to play an important role in that.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Ollie I want.
- 12:03Speaker 2: There's a lot I want to get into specifically about
- 12:05Speaker 2: your managerial style and what is going to change or
- 12:08Speaker 2: if anything's going to change.
- 12:09Speaker 3: So this was going to be fun.
- 12:10Speaker 1: It is fun. Let me tee it up. You are
- 12:14Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Now I'm all frazzled for the worst part of the show,
- 12:18Speaker 2: which is the ad reed. So before we get into this,
- 12:21Speaker 2: this is literally what I'm so bad at. Every episode,
- 12:24Speaker 2: we need to hear from our friends at Arena Club.
- 12:28Speaker 7: H Todd Father, remember the good old days when we
- 12:30Speaker 7: would have the cards and the binders, but then they
- 12:32Speaker 7: get all messed up and we're trying to sell online
- 12:35Speaker 7: and it's just real clunky. They really actually weren't the
- 12:37Speaker 7: good old days, were they?
- 12:39Speaker 8: No, they were definitely not. But now there's a better way.
- 12:42Speaker 8: The Arena Club has been dominant with this that you
- 12:45Speaker 8: get to trade your card, you could sell them, but
- 12:47Speaker 8: the best part for me is getting them graded. I
- 12:50Speaker 8: love everything about that, this new age of getting cards graded.
- 12:53Speaker 8: You could display them on your online showroom, your mobile device.
- 12:56Speaker 4: It's the coolest thing.
- 12:57Speaker 3: In the world.
- 12:58Speaker 7: Whether you're buying, selling, trading, or displaying. Arena Club is
- 13:02Speaker 7: the all in one trading card platform. You have to
- 13:05Speaker 7: sign up for an account at Arena club dot com
- 13:08Speaker 7: slash foul. Just like Todd Father mentioned, there's a process
- 13:11Speaker 7: that combines AI and human grading to get the job
- 13:14Speaker 7: done right now. Twenty percent off your first slab pack
- 13:17Speaker 7: or card purchase by going to Arena club dot com
- 13:20Speaker 7: slash foul use codefoul. That's Arena club dot com slash
- 13:24Speaker 7: foul codefoul for twenty percent off your first purchase.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Dang it, Allie, that was I had the transition practice
- 13:31Speaker 2: like perfectly in my head and you threw me off.
- 13:33Speaker 5: So well, Katie, I'll help you out here. Speaking of ads, Ollie,
- 13:37Speaker 5: what are you drinking right now? You gotta love it
- 13:39Speaker 5: of cocu.
- 13:41Speaker 4: I love it.
- 13:42Speaker 6: This is a coconut water that Amber and I are
- 13:46Speaker 6: actually a part of.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I love it. But they also do like really good work.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Man.
- 13:52Speaker 6: We invested in it a couple of years ago. The
- 13:55Speaker 6: founder CEO is an incredible dude. Their team is awesome,
- 13:58Speaker 6: but they're doing some really good work with a lot
- 14:01Speaker 6: of the money that comes in.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And we wanted to be a part of it.
- 14:03Speaker 4: So what's it called?
- 14:05Speaker 3: Once upon a Coconut?
- 14:07Speaker 4: I actually had it recently.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Our friend Andy gave me one incredible, delicious. I'm a
- 14:14Speaker 5: fan of coconut coconut water already, sprinkle in a little
- 14:17Speaker 5: bit of carbonation and caffeine even better.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I love it. We need to have you done some ads.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I love it.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Whichever you should do.
- 14:26Speaker 2: The ag read that was so much better than anything
- 14:28Speaker 2: I've done in like our fifteen episodes.
- 14:30Speaker 1: It was ridiculous. Trevor was just showing me up.
- 14:36Speaker 2: All right, OLLI, let's get into it, because I do
- 14:38Speaker 2: think this is interesting, and I think this is something
- 14:39Speaker 2: that fans don't offully get to see the side of you.
- 14:43Speaker 2: But you are one of the most accessible and often
- 14:46Speaker 2: insightful managers in the game. I mean, there are multiple
- 14:49Speaker 2: times over the course of the season where I go
- 14:51Speaker 2: into your office after.
- 14:52Speaker 1: A game and I'm not seeing something and you.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Let me know.
- 14:57Speaker 2: But you then take the time to really explain things
- 15:00Speaker 2: from your perspective and your point of view, and it
- 15:02Speaker 2: just makes so much sense. And I think Cardinals fans,
- 15:05Speaker 2: especially who have that baseball knowledge and that that desire
- 15:08Speaker 2: to know everything about the game, could really appreciate that.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So for the last three years we've seen your managerial style.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Something that I think you do really well is manage
- 15:17Speaker 2: the versatility.
- 15:18Speaker 1: In your lineup. We saw that a lot last year
- 15:20Speaker 1: when you had to.
- 15:21Speaker 2: You know, the offense wasn't performing, so you're trying to maximizing,
- 15:24Speaker 2: maximize what you could get out of each day. The
- 15:26Speaker 2: bullpen use last year was excellent. This year, though, you're
- 15:30Speaker 2: in managing not just to win the game that day,
- 15:34Speaker 2: but to maybe put the foundation of the future in perspective.
- 15:39Speaker 2: And how does that change for you?
- 15:42Speaker 3: It will be different.
- 15:44Speaker 6: It'll add a layer of difficulty, but in a good way.
- 15:48Speaker 6: And to your point, I don't think I've done a
- 15:50Speaker 6: good job of that. When I think about explaining certain
- 15:55Speaker 6: things to the fan base or communicating in a certain way,
- 15:59Speaker 6: I think I do at more in private, and then
- 16:01Speaker 6: people just see the quick two minute presser at the
- 16:05Speaker 6: end where it's just kind of sometimes little heated, sometimes
- 16:09Speaker 6: just answering and keeping things short, but doing a better
- 16:12Speaker 6: job of like explaining the why I think is important.
- 16:16Speaker 6: But to answer your second question, it's it will be
- 16:20Speaker 6: different because you're wanting to make.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Decisions to win a game, but you're also thinking about the.
- 16:26Speaker 6: Long game here of setting the foundation for some of
- 16:29Speaker 6: these young guys to gain experience and fail succeed and
- 16:32Speaker 6: fail again, but to know what that feels like in
- 16:36Speaker 6: order to have that experience, you know, So there's decisions
- 16:41Speaker 6: that will be made that are long term decisions that
- 16:44Speaker 6: in the short term may not make the most sense.
- 16:47Speaker 6: And that's a bigger conversation that will have as we
- 16:49Speaker 6: get closer to campus to what do those areas look
- 16:52Speaker 6: like when it comes to pinch hitting and what it
- 16:55Speaker 6: looks like the leverage innings.
- 16:57Speaker 3: The starting rotation. So I think there's a lot of
- 17:00Speaker 3: questions that.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Aren't completely answered just yet, and they're not supposed to be.
- 17:04Speaker 6: As we get closer, I think you start to define
- 17:07Speaker 6: that and bring more clarity to it.
- 17:09Speaker 3: So that's where we're at at the moment.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Yeah, kind of piggybacking off of that talking about just
- 17:15Speaker 5: your your your managing style. And you know, analytics have
- 17:19Speaker 5: become a big part of the game, and and for
- 17:21Speaker 5: good reason. I mean, anytime we're making decisions, more information
- 17:25Speaker 5: is better, and analytics have have found a way to
- 17:27Speaker 5: be very accurate with the information that we get.
- 17:29Speaker 4: And so, you know, I'm just wondering.
- 17:31Speaker 5: You mentioned like the bullpen and pinch hitting decisions, how
- 17:34Speaker 5: do you balance analytics versus.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Just your you know, in game gut feeling. What does
- 17:39Speaker 4: that look like?
- 17:40Speaker 6: Yeah, it's it's funny because I get hammered by like
- 17:43Speaker 6: the traditional fan for being too analytical, and then by
- 17:46Speaker 6: the analytics teams for being too traditional. So it's it's
- 17:51Speaker 6: it's a sweet lose lose. But here's the way I'll
- 17:55Speaker 6: answer that. I want as much information as possible when
- 17:57Speaker 6: I'm making the decision, and I mean like as much
- 17:59Speaker 6: as possible, Like I want to be the one to
- 18:01Speaker 6: filter through it and figure.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Out what is useful, what is actionable.
- 18:05Speaker 6: So I asked my group, whether that's the baseball development
- 18:08Speaker 6: team or our coaches, to just give me. I mean,
- 18:11Speaker 6: just dump all info and allow me to kind of
- 18:15Speaker 6: see the game, know the player.
- 18:17Speaker 3: And make a final call on it and whether it
- 18:19Speaker 3: works or not. That's baseball.
- 18:22Speaker 6: But having a good blend of that is important. Like
- 18:25Speaker 6: having the right inputs as far as what you're using
- 18:27Speaker 6: in order to make.
- 18:27Speaker 3: A decision is important. So when people say I just
- 18:31Speaker 3: use my gut, like, I call bs on that all
- 18:33Speaker 3: day long, Like.
- 18:36Speaker 6: You have enough experience that you've seen this work over
- 18:39Speaker 6: time or not work over time? Right, But I think
- 18:41Speaker 6: we all if we're making financial decisions, business decisions, baseball decisions.
- 18:46Speaker 6: We want as much input as possible before we go
- 18:49Speaker 6: ahead and say this go with and making a bullpen
- 18:53Speaker 6: decision is no different. Am I watching the game, reading
- 18:57Speaker 6: the player, knowing how they handle pressure, knowing how they
- 19:02Speaker 6: will bounce back if this doesn't go.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Well or it does go well.
- 19:05Speaker 6: Like you're there's so many things you're thinking about when
- 19:09Speaker 6: you're making.
- 19:09Speaker 3: One decision, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, go ahead, go ahead, Katie.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Sorry, well, I think you know.
- 19:20Speaker 2: It's a lot about the analytics and the information, and
- 19:23Speaker 2: it's also about the staff you have in place. And
- 19:26Speaker 2: the Cardinals want to go back to a draft and
- 19:28Speaker 2: develop club. Right We've heard Buildwit Junior say that exact phrase.
- 19:32Speaker 2: When you look at your coaching staff right now, and
- 19:34Speaker 2: this is not a coincidence.
- 19:36Speaker 1: You have an.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Entire major league staff full of player development experience. Now,
- 19:41Speaker 2: in years prior, we've had these conversations the major leagues
- 19:44Speaker 2: are not for developing players. But this year, in order
- 19:47Speaker 2: to get you guys back on track long term and
- 19:50Speaker 2: bring back winning baseball and the culture to Saint Louis,
- 19:53Speaker 2: you need to develop in the Major leagues. How do
- 19:56Speaker 2: guys like you Pop Warner, Stubby Clapp who you know,
- 19:59Speaker 2: you all him up together through the minor league system
- 20:01Speaker 2: as coaches. Then you add someone like Daniel descalso or
- 20:05Speaker 2: you bring in John Jay and who have real time
- 20:07Speaker 2: experience and going through the Cardinals minor league system as
- 20:10Speaker 2: players and then coming to Saint Louis and being a
- 20:13Speaker 2: part of a championship club that won a World Series.
- 20:16Speaker 2: How is the staff this year positioned to start that
- 20:20Speaker 2: next mold of next players.
- 20:22Speaker 6: The quick answer is that each one of these staff
- 20:26Speaker 6: members is extremely passionate about teaching, and that's important, Like
- 20:30Speaker 6: that is where they find they're like why, like I
- 20:34Speaker 6: love teaching, and you go up and down that list
- 20:38Speaker 6: and they all feel that way. But I want to
- 20:41Speaker 6: be super thoughtful and who we brought.
- 20:42Speaker 3: In and why we were bringing them in.
- 20:44Speaker 6: And when you look at our staff to your point, like,
- 20:46Speaker 6: it's guys that love player development, that aren't just leading
- 20:49Speaker 6: on their plane experience to teach or regurgitate what they
- 20:52Speaker 6: used to do, but they are truly like seeking what's
- 20:57Speaker 6: the best way to reach a player and with what
- 21:00Speaker 6: info and drills?
- 21:01Speaker 3: And it's just the staff we have right now I
- 21:05Speaker 3: absolutely love them.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Like you watch these guys work even today, I'll sit
- 21:09Speaker 6: in there watching John j do outfield drills with our guys, man,
- 21:13Speaker 6: and the relatability is there, and the drill just I
- 21:18Speaker 6: just feel really good about the direction where that's headed.
- 21:22Speaker 6: Daniel's super relatable and how he approaches the game and
- 21:25Speaker 6: players and guys love him.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Brent Brown, I mean, just a preparation maniac. We had
- 21:32Speaker 3: a meeting today, and just the way he addressed the.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Guys and what he finds important and how he's bringing
- 21:36Speaker 6: the group together as.
- 21:38Speaker 3: One is awesome.
- 21:40Speaker 6: So you want guys that are seeking out every single
- 21:44Speaker 6: opportunity to maximize these players' careers, right, Like, can you
- 21:50Speaker 6: cultivate an environment where these players will start to do
- 21:54Speaker 6: things they didn't even think it was possible.
- 21:56Speaker 3: And when you do that right, that's a heck of
- 21:58Speaker 3: a lot of fun. It really is.
- 22:01Speaker 5: I'm I'm getting pumped up just hearing you talk about it,
- 22:04Speaker 5: because I agree. I mean, I played with John Jay,
- 22:06Speaker 5: I played with Daniel Descalzo.
- 22:08Speaker 4: I've talked about them a lot.
- 22:10Speaker 5: I mean, you speak of outfield drills, there was no
- 22:12Speaker 5: better guy at getting work in during batting practice or
- 22:16Speaker 5: or prior to the game than John Jay. I mean
- 22:18Speaker 5: the stuff that he was doing in the outfield, coming
- 22:21Speaker 5: up with creative ways and and intentional, purposeful drills for
- 22:25Speaker 5: him to get better, and you would see it payoff
- 22:26Speaker 5: immediately in the game. And as a team, we're a
- 22:28Speaker 5: beneficiary of that. So I'm I'm super happy that Jay's
- 22:31Speaker 5: in there.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Uh.
- 22:33Speaker 5: And and and then also Scoals, I mean, Skoles is
- 22:35Speaker 5: a team first guy. And and man, you guys have
- 22:38Speaker 5: such a We're lucky to have the core and and
- 22:41Speaker 5: you know, we talk about like this transition year. It's
- 22:43Speaker 5: a it's obviously a different time. But I've said it
- 22:47Speaker 5: before and I'll say it again. I mean, anything positive
- 22:49Speaker 5: that happens this year, Ali, like you should get full
- 22:52Speaker 5: credit because this is this is a tough uh landscape
- 22:56Speaker 5: to navigate as a manager when when there's things happening,
- 22:59Speaker 5: thing is changing at a high level with the organization.
- 23:03Speaker 4: So man, I'm excited.
- 23:05Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 23:07Speaker 6: But at the end of the day, man, like you
- 23:08Speaker 6: want to like if I'm thinking five years on a row,
- 23:10Speaker 6: seven two years down to row, ten years on the road,
- 23:12Speaker 6: like what's going to be most important. It's just carrying
- 23:16Speaker 6: ourselves in a way where that staff really knows that
- 23:18Speaker 6: we care about them and you allow them to do
- 23:20Speaker 6: their job.
- 23:21Speaker 3: We hired Brandt for a reason.
- 23:22Speaker 6: We hired Jay for a reason, Like these guys are
- 23:25Speaker 6: in these positions. Dusty I mean, came from Duke, comes over,
- 23:30Speaker 6: holds a position under the current pitching coach, and then
- 23:33Speaker 6: gets the job. Like these dudes are innovative, they're thoughtful,
- 23:36Speaker 6: they care, they're knowledgeable.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Let them do their jobs and let them know that
- 23:40Speaker 3: you have their backs, and then be there for the player.
- 23:42Speaker 3: They're gonna be ups and downs this year.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Man, as long as they stay confident because they know
- 23:46Speaker 6: that you care, then we keep moving. So I give
- 23:49Speaker 6: a lot of credit to that staff man because they're
- 23:51Speaker 6: the way they're preparing right now. I wish you guys
- 23:55Speaker 6: could sit in the room and just watch everything that
- 23:57Speaker 6: goes into it in the hour of meetings that we
- 24:00Speaker 6: have starting at five point thirty in the morning before
- 24:03Speaker 6: the players get here at seven or eight, like it's
- 24:06Speaker 6: cool to watch, and then you see it play out
- 24:08Speaker 6: or the course of a two to three hour practice
- 24:10Speaker 6: and then you deep reef, what did we suck at
- 24:14Speaker 6: today as a staff?
- 24:15Speaker 3: What drills didn't go well? What did we do well
- 24:18Speaker 3: as a staff and players?
- 24:19Speaker 6: And then you man put it all together and they're
- 24:22Speaker 6: downstairs as we speak right now, it's three o'clock.
- 24:24Speaker 3: They're down there prepping for tomorrow's practice, right, and then
- 24:27Speaker 3: we'll get here again at five o'clock and ramped this
- 24:29Speaker 3: baby up again. So a lot of credit to that group.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Yeah, a lot of respect for what you guys do.
- 24:35Speaker 5: Thanks for getting thanks for giving us a little peek
- 24:37Speaker 5: behind the curtain talking about like the transition, and I'm interested.
- 24:41Speaker 5: You know, we're coming off maybe a couple of days ago,
- 24:44Speaker 5: full camp, and to start off the camp, at least
- 24:48Speaker 5: in my experience, there's always that first day where it's
- 24:50Speaker 5: like closed doors.
- 24:51Speaker 4: The GM, the owner, you you get.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Up and you address the team, and it's closed doors
- 24:55Speaker 5: for a reason. Right, we don't deserve to know everything
- 24:57Speaker 5: that goes on, but just you know, in terms of
- 25:00Speaker 5: this transition and your messaging to the team, like what
- 25:03Speaker 5: what what is.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Your message to this to this clubhouse right now?
- 25:07Speaker 6: Yeah, this was the first year where I kept that
- 25:11Speaker 6: room even smaller and my message was fairly short, succinct, direct.
- 25:20Speaker 3: And it will stay in that clubhouse.
- 25:21Speaker 6: But uh, Yeah, I'm excited about our group.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Man. I think they're thinking about this the right way.
- 25:28Speaker 6: And I say that I'm talking about the forty man
- 25:31Speaker 6: non roster, but everybody that was in there, the coaching staff,
- 25:34Speaker 6: the guys that are coming from the minor league's coaching
- 25:37Speaker 6: staff that are helping us. It was just I think
- 25:40Speaker 6: guys are in the right mindset and are approaching this
- 25:43Speaker 6: the right way to build something that's truly lasting.
- 25:46Speaker 3: That's the way I would put in.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Olie, what does excite you about this year?
- 25:51Speaker 3: Your question? Trev he.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Really good at this? You know what else is good
- 25:56Speaker 1: at this?
- 25:57Speaker 2: Discalso I've Eparham with so many qui and I didn't
- 26:00Speaker 2: get one single answer, but he sounded really good. So
- 26:03Speaker 2: whatever you guys are practicing in your media training, it's working.
- 26:06Speaker 4: We tried to butter him up, Katie.
- 26:07Speaker 5: We spent twenty five minutes buttering him up to get
- 26:09Speaker 5: on the inside, and he was yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 1: He's just like, no, all right, it got to be better.
- 26:14Speaker 1: At Trevor, this is bad.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Oh well, I mean okay, so like just a fun question.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Let's let's make it fun.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Okay, if you could pick one cardinal player, one former
- 26:26Speaker 5: cardinal player in their prime to add to this roster.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Who would it be and why.
- 26:32Speaker 3: In their prime?
- 26:33Speaker 4: In their prime?
- 26:35Speaker 3: I'm going with ap.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Okay, I mean we kind of saw that, We kind
- 26:39Speaker 2: of saw what that looked like in twenty twenty two.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, him and his prime is pretty special and
- 26:46Speaker 3: I just love him. I love having him around. So that, Yeah,
- 26:50Speaker 3: having him in twenty two was cool. It really was.
- 26:52Speaker 3: It's one of the highlights of.
- 26:54Speaker 6: Just seeing the ups and downs of that season, man,
- 26:57Speaker 6: and the conversations that took play and then seeing them
- 27:01Speaker 6: go on that run. I was able to talk to
- 27:03Speaker 6: them two days.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Ago or so, and man, I just I loved everything
- 27:10Speaker 3: that happened that year. That was pretty cool.
- 27:12Speaker 4: All right, Well how about this?
- 27:13Speaker 5: How about I'm a you know, I lived in Saint
- 27:16Speaker 5: Louis for eleven years, very near and dear to my heart.
- 27:20Speaker 5: All all all of my kids, my three daughters are
- 27:22Speaker 5: all born in the city of Saint Louis. Have a
- 27:23Speaker 5: lot of close relationships and friends there. It's a great city,
- 27:25Speaker 5: great baseball town, but just great city, a lot of diversity,
- 27:29Speaker 5: things to do, great food restaurants. What's your favorite part
- 27:33Speaker 5: about managing the Saint Louis Cardinals, that.
- 27:36Speaker 6: The city only cares about the Saint Louis Cardinals, and
- 27:39Speaker 6: that's no disrespect to anything else that's happening in this city.
- 27:43Speaker 6: But that's what this city is about. Like the Cardinals
- 27:46Speaker 6: are truly like.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Part.
- 27:51Speaker 6: Like it's it's what matters, right. So I love the
- 27:55Speaker 6: responsibility of carrying that, Like I don't take that light
- 28:00Speaker 6: at all. Yes, is it fun. Do I have a
- 28:03Speaker 6: good time, But it's there's weight to that. And I
- 28:05Speaker 6: love the fact that you wake up every morning during
- 28:08Speaker 6: the year and there's some real accountability to doing it well.
- 28:14Speaker 6: And if you're not doing it well, it sucks and
- 28:16Speaker 6: people will hate you.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And if you're doing it well, they like you.
- 28:19Speaker 6: I willn't get to love you, AND's I think you
- 28:21Speaker 6: get they love you once you win a World Series,
- 28:24Speaker 6: but they like you they tolerate you if you're winning,
- 28:26Speaker 6: you know. But I love that responsibility and that back
- 28:30Speaker 6: and forth because it's I mean, I don't think I
- 28:32Speaker 6: would do this in a city where there wasn't that accountability,
- 28:35Speaker 6: Like it just wouldn't get me excited enough to do it.
- 28:39Speaker 6: So being able to do it in Saint Louis and
- 28:41Speaker 6: I know nothing else, but Saint Louis. Right to your point,
- 28:44Speaker 6: it's the only place I've ever been as a player,
- 28:46Speaker 6: minor league, staff member, all the way through to hold
- 28:48Speaker 6: the seat today. But that's the fun part. It is
- 28:52Speaker 6: being out with my family and someone stops you and
- 28:55Speaker 6: tells you how much they appreciate, like what you're doing
- 28:58Speaker 6: for the city, whether it's off the field or on
- 29:00Speaker 6: the field, like those type of things.
- 29:02Speaker 3: That's that's the cool part about it.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Well to that point, Olie, we're almost at time here,
- 29:07Speaker 2: but I think this one's important.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I know, time flies when you're having fun, right, Okay.
- 29:13Speaker 3: I am having fun. I'm smiling the whole time.
- 29:16Speaker 1: You are you are. What's your message to the fan
- 29:19Speaker 1: base this year?
- 29:20Speaker 2: I mean, this is this is different, right, and we've
- 29:22Speaker 2: talked about the expectations here. This team can still win,
- 29:27Speaker 2: it's just not really set out in the way. You know,
- 29:29Speaker 2: they didn't spend in the off season, a lot of
- 29:32Speaker 2: uncertainty about what the transition is going to look like.
- 29:34Speaker 1: But for this year, what's your message to the fans?
- 29:39Speaker 6: Yeah, Like when I think about Saint Louis, when I
- 29:41Speaker 6: think about what the norm is, the difference is this
- 29:46Speaker 6: play on youth right, like it is, it is going
- 29:49Speaker 6: to be a youthful team. It'll lack some experience to
- 29:53Speaker 6: the degree that we've seen in past years. That's different,
- 29:58Speaker 6: but that's that's that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
- 30:00Speaker 6: And I think what's going to be important and I'll
- 30:04Speaker 6: find a better way to kind of articulate this, but
- 30:06Speaker 6: it's it's filling up that stadium regardless of what's going on,
- 30:12Speaker 6: so that these young players know what it feels like
- 30:15Speaker 6: to play in Saint Louis, so they understand what it
- 30:18Speaker 6: feels like to play in front of like Cardinal Nation. Right,
- 30:23Speaker 6: So if I'm a Burlson, and if I'm a Mason Wynn,
- 30:25Speaker 6: if I'm a Jordan Walker, if I'm a Herrera, like
- 30:28Speaker 6: you go down that list of young guys like I
- 30:30Speaker 6: want them to feel. My first time experiencing it was
- 30:33Speaker 6: in two thousand and eleven. They flew Amber and I
- 30:37Speaker 6: prior to having kids, to the World Series and we
- 30:40Speaker 6: sat in the stands and it was incredible. I mean
- 30:43Speaker 6: it's a drug, like you literally sit there in the stands.
- 30:46Speaker 6: I remember looking around and this place was going wild
- 30:48Speaker 6: towels every I mean, it was just nuts and I
- 30:51Speaker 6: remember looking at my wife like this is all I want,
- 30:54Speaker 6: like this, this is what it's about right here, like
- 30:56Speaker 6: I want to I want to do this, and it
- 31:00Speaker 6: makes you strive for that exact thing, right so when
- 31:04Speaker 6: you hold this seat now, I want them to experience.
- 31:07Speaker 3: That version of Cardinal Nation. We're shooting for that, playing
- 31:12Speaker 3: for this style of fan base, packed house, that excitement,
- 31:16Speaker 3: that energy because it's an exciting group and they're hungry.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Are they going to make mistakes? Absolutely, but these guys
- 31:24Speaker 3: are hunger to leave.
- 31:24Speaker 6: Their mark on this franchise, and I think we're going
- 31:27Speaker 6: to see a decent amount of them do exactly that.
- 31:32Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I'm fired up, and honestly, in six weeks, which will
- 31:35Speaker 2: fly by, maybe not for you since you're waking up
- 31:37Speaker 2: at four in the morning every day, I'm excited to
- 31:40Speaker 2: see what opening day is going to look like. I
- 31:42Speaker 2: you know, opening Day to me, no one doesn't it
- 31:43Speaker 2: better than Saint Louis. And again, I certainly understand where
- 31:48Speaker 2: where some of the fan bases just based on the
