- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwald to take us out of our misery and
- 0:02Speaker 1: tell us about the Broncos. Jeff Legwald is brought to
- 0:06Speaker 1: you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers i b
- 0:10Speaker 1: e W Local sixty eight. Start with a job and
- 0:13Speaker 1: with the career, Jeff, we'd be remiss if we just
- 0:17Speaker 1: didn't bring up the the interaction you had with Sean
- 0:20Speaker 1: Payne at the end of the game about the injury stuff.
- 0:24Speaker 1: What is there a backstory there that was that felt
- 0:27Speaker 1: kind of weird? Just talked to bottom.
- 0:31Speaker 2: No, I, Uh, you do this long enough, you're gonna
- 0:34Speaker 2: have an exchange with the head coach or two. So
- 0:37Speaker 2: that's just the way it goes sometimes.
- 0:39Speaker 1: All right, Uh, well, I don't think you were asking
- 0:43Speaker 1: anything that crazy. You were asking if Tyler an opportunity.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He didn't say that that.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Opportunity us opportunity.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Jeff.
- 0:54Speaker 1: That was pretty fun.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That's right, I got an opportunity.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Why why do you think he was so because we
- 1:03Speaker 4: talked about yesterday. It felt like he was grumpy. He
- 1:05Speaker 4: just got a monstro win. I don't I don't care
- 1:07Speaker 4: what the score was, and that going into New York
- 1:10Speaker 4: and winning that game against the Jets, a team that
- 1:12Speaker 4: a lot of people predicted in the postseason, that's still
- 1:15Speaker 4: a big win. Why why why do you think he's
- 1:17Speaker 4: so grumpy?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well, in a couple of things, Scott Irion, Uh, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: the part of the whole operation he has the most
- 1:27Speaker 2: stake in, which is his rookie quarterback in the offense
- 1:30Speaker 2: is uh. You know, the young guy is playing like
- 1:36Speaker 2: a rookie. You know, he's he's near the bottom of
- 1:39Speaker 2: almost every metric of starting quarterbacks in the league. And that's,
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know, frankly to be expected. Taylor Williams is right
- 1:45Speaker 2: there with him on most of it. So, Uh, I
- 1:49Speaker 2: think there's some of that. I just think that they
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, they have one touchdown pass in four games. Uh,
- 1:56Speaker 2: They've tried a lot of things in the passing game,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and none of them seem to be particularly working. I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 2: you know, minus seven yards passing in the in the
- 2:06Speaker 2: half of an NFL game is for somebody with multiple completions.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I don't think it's happened since the sixties. So we're
- 2:16Speaker 2: talking about a lot of frustration for him, and I
- 2:18Speaker 2: think it and he and he really doesn't want to
- 2:21Speaker 2: talk about injuries, and he gets frustrated that he keeps
- 2:23Speaker 2: being asked, despite saying he doesn't like talking about them,
- 2:27Speaker 2: but it's all just part of it, and you know
- 2:31Speaker 2: that's but I think that's the genesis of his mood.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And it might have been that it had rained for
- 2:37Speaker 2: six straight days and two states, So I don't think
- 2:41Speaker 2: anybody was in that great a mood by the time
- 2:44Speaker 2: it was time to leave MetLife Stadium.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Did you get an opportunity to go out to dinner
- 2:48Speaker 3: with bo Nicks and assess his confidence yet, because you know,
- 2:53Speaker 3: Sean did offer to send him out to dinner with
- 2:55Speaker 3: all of you guys.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I haven't seen the sign up sheet yet, but just
- 2:59Speaker 2: come around. I'll be ready.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Hey, Jeff, I do want to ask you, though, Miami
- 3:04Speaker 3: is in a pickle here. They got to make a decision.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Are they going to fold on the season or are
- 3:09Speaker 3: they going to try to salvage this thing? A lot
- 3:12Speaker 3: of speculation about them making a trade for a quarterback.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Obviously we got a guy right here in Zach Wilson
- 3:17Speaker 3: that is a tradable commodity. Have you heard anything about
- 3:20Speaker 3: conversations between the Broncos and the Dolphins and a potential trade?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Now I have not, Tyler. I mean I've I traditionally
- 3:28Speaker 2: poke around at the beginning of every week with some
- 3:31Speaker 2: GMS to see what the scuttle butt is around the league,
- 3:35Speaker 2: and I have not heard much in the way of
- 3:38Speaker 2: the Dolphins. I mean, right now, a lot of the
- 3:40Speaker 2: chatter is about where DeVante Adams will end up and
- 3:43Speaker 2: how much that would cost. But you know, Miami is
- 3:46Speaker 2: like a lot of teams that, you know, your available
- 3:49Speaker 2: cap space is really limited for especially the teams that
- 3:53Speaker 2: think they're competitive, because they're taking it right to the
- 3:57Speaker 2: edge to put the roster together. So aren't a lot
- 4:00Speaker 2: of teams with a lot of flexibility to do a
- 4:03Speaker 2: lot of things right now? But you know it, it
- 4:07Speaker 2: is intriguing, you know, just when you start maybe you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: over emphasizing strategy and and scheme and all of these things.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We often discover each and every week in the NFL,
- 4:21Speaker 2: the players are the majority of the ah of the
- 4:25Speaker 2: go of the go go juice in an offense. And
- 4:30Speaker 2: you know, Miami's proof of that. I mean last year
- 4:32Speaker 2: at this time, we were talking about how Mike McDaniel
- 4:35Speaker 2: is going to have the Dolphins break the scoring record.
- 4:39Speaker 4: You know, speaking on that and you talk about that,
- 4:41Speaker 4: so I kept a while ago, and you look at
- 4:43Speaker 4: what they're paying Zach Wilson for this year, does that
- 4:45Speaker 4: make him a little shinier for people that might be
- 4:49Speaker 4: in the situation like in Miami.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's gotta again. It's it's even you know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: we're not talking about just limited space. I mean teams
- 5:00Speaker 2: has to be ready for you know, guys on IR
- 5:03Speaker 2: count against the salary caps. So if one of your
- 5:07Speaker 2: top ten paid guys is suffer as the season ending
- 5:10Speaker 2: injury or even a four weeker, you've got to have
- 5:13Speaker 2: room to put him on IR and you know, sign
- 5:18Speaker 2: a replacement. And I think that's the limitation. I don't
- 5:22Speaker 2: know how many teams have sort of kicked the tires
- 5:25Speaker 2: on the on the to gauge the Broncos interests. I don't.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I don't think there's been any to a legitimate extent
- 5:33Speaker 2: so far. But we you know, it is only week
- 5:37Speaker 2: five and and they do have a surplus of what
- 5:41Speaker 2: most teams do not have a surplus of.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Sean Payton snickered at Parker Gabriel's article about the two
- 5:47Speaker 1: million dollars Bruce Springsteen tour. There were just we're just
- 5:50Speaker 1: put two trips together that's what he said. He also
- 5:53Speaker 1: said it was one of maybe thirty factors that went
- 5:56Speaker 1: into winning the game against the Jets. So I'll throw
- 5:59Speaker 1: it out to you as you were in the middle
- 6:01Speaker 1: of the rain, Jeff, how big of a deal was it?
- 6:04Speaker 1: If there's thirty, you know, reasons that went into that game,
- 6:07Speaker 1: how much did it matter that they did what they
- 6:10Speaker 1: did and what did that do for the team in
- 6:12Speaker 1: your opinion?
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not sure. The the players, or at least
- 6:17Speaker 2: the ones I've spoken through a little bit, got the
- 6:21Speaker 2: remember the Titans Kumbayel moment, uh, you know, or anything
- 6:26Speaker 2: like that. You know, the fact they got two wins.
- 6:28Speaker 2: You know, we all know that always matters in the NFL.
- 6:31Speaker 2: If you did something and you won, that's you stay
- 6:34Speaker 2: in that hotel again, or you take the flight at
- 6:37Speaker 2: the same time. I mean, that's a that's a common thing.
- 6:40Speaker 2: But I think there were a lot more than thirty
- 6:43Speaker 2: things that went into winning the game. Then I don't
- 6:47Speaker 2: I guess I'll say it this way. When they have
- 6:49Speaker 2: a choice, I doubt very highly he will practice on
- 6:52Speaker 2: tennis courts this Friday.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Yeah, well, or maybe they do because you started some Hey,
- 6:58Speaker 4: I got to ask you this and you won the
- 7:00Speaker 4: is you got to win this game. You got to
- 7:01Speaker 4: look at what Dvance, Joseph and the defensive has done.
- 7:04Speaker 4: And I point out yesterday just just look what the
- 7:07Speaker 4: Jets offense did the week before they played Denver, and
- 7:10Speaker 4: look what Tampa Bay's offense did the week after they
- 7:12Speaker 4: played Denver. To me, that's a sign. And you can
- 7:15Speaker 4: talk about weather or whatever. Pass Joseph has. These guys
- 7:19Speaker 4: kind of clicking right now and bothering other teams offenses,
- 7:23Speaker 4: aren't they.
- 7:25Speaker 2: They are Scotty a lot of different looks. I see
- 7:28Speaker 2: a lot of Wade Phillips's influence and what DJ's doing now.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And you know, we know Vance has still touched a
- 7:36Speaker 2: way a great deal and considers him a mentor. And
- 7:41Speaker 2: they you know, Jim Leonards had a little bit of
- 7:45Speaker 2: an influence with his addition and some of the coverage looks.
- 7:48Speaker 2: But you know, the big thing is is John Franklin
- 7:51Speaker 2: Myers was a really good addition because you can play
- 7:54Speaker 2: everybody else in the defensive front where they belong now
- 7:59Speaker 2: instead of forcing people into jobs they you know, because
- 8:03Speaker 2: you're trying to cover for injuries or whatever. And you know,
- 8:07Speaker 2: Passer Tan's pretty damn good that that helps. And Riley
- 8:12Speaker 2: Moss has been up to the challenge to be the
- 8:14Speaker 2: other guy, you know, at corner, and they're getting enough
- 8:19Speaker 2: pass rush from enough people that you know that the
- 8:23Speaker 2: test will be can they keep doing it with this
- 8:25Speaker 2: bigger variety in the rush, you know, without sort of
- 8:28Speaker 2: that alpha edge guy, and you know that's really the
- 8:32Speaker 2: only thing they're they're missing overall. But collectively, there aren't
- 8:38Speaker 2: many defenses playing very you know much better right now?
- 8:41Speaker 2: You know, at what are they at? Thirteen zero point
- 8:43Speaker 2: eight points allowed per game? That should be better than
- 8:47Speaker 2: two and two, but they're not.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Jeff, it looked like there was a change in the
- 8:52Speaker 3: rotation at the running back before Tyler Boday got hurt.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I'm not sure what exactly that was all gonna unfold
- 8:58Speaker 3: and look like, but it was all said and done.
- 9:00Speaker 3: But Tyler did get hurt. Javonte goes back in there,
- 9:03Speaker 3: and he looked great. He looked young, he looked fresh,
- 9:06Speaker 3: He looked like he was a man on a mission.
- 9:08Speaker 3: To me, do you think what Javante was able to
- 9:11Speaker 3: do in that game was enough to renew the faith
- 9:14Speaker 3: of the coaches in him as a full time starting
- 9:16Speaker 3: running back.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think they you know, I think they
- 9:21Speaker 2: were definitely looking at getting today more snaps somehow. And
- 9:26Speaker 2: he has complimented sort of Julia McLoughlin more than he
- 9:31Speaker 2: has Javonte in the early going here. But you know,
- 9:34Speaker 2: I think they were just a little bit smarter about
- 9:37Speaker 2: the run game, you know, in the in the in
- 9:40Speaker 2: the second half especially, I thought they, you know, after
- 9:44Speaker 2: our first half of more dropbacks again for bow Nicks
- 9:47Speaker 2: in the rain, the second half, I thought they were
- 9:49Speaker 2: a lot more concerted effort, you know for some of
- 9:53Speaker 2: the old school you know, some duo run scheme. There's
- 9:56Speaker 2: some straight ahead gap scheme in there, you know, zone
- 10:00Speaker 2: play tossed in. I just thought they were more, uh,
- 10:04Speaker 2: just more variety and and more things that they're good
- 10:08Speaker 2: at that had the running back go to quick hit
- 10:11Speaker 2: to the hole instead of you know, so much of
- 10:15Speaker 2: the the pitter patter in the backfield. But uh and
- 10:20Speaker 2: and you know, minors had a good second half, I
- 10:23Speaker 2: thought up front and and they they found a little
- 10:26Speaker 2: room behind him. And now you know, the test will
- 10:28Speaker 2: be will he commit to the run as much when
- 10:32Speaker 2: it's sunny or you know, you know, where's this patience
- 10:37Speaker 2: level going to be with the run game because we
- 10:39Speaker 2: still see it. You know, they'll they'll live with ten
- 10:42Speaker 2: incompletions in a row, but one bad run they they
- 10:45Speaker 2: sort of check out of it for a while.
- 10:47Speaker 1: All right, Jeff, we appreciate brother. We'll see you later.
- 10:49Speaker 1: It's Raiders week, and uh, what's gott You want to
- 10:53Speaker 1: throw something?
- 10:53Speaker 4: No, I'm just gonna say I thought Barton and Welch
- 10:58Speaker 4: were fantastic in New York.
- 11:01Speaker 2: No, they're getting they're getting quality reps from you know.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And I just like the stern Id story just on
- 11:08Speaker 2: a human level. The guy waited three years. I played
- 11:11Speaker 2: a defensive snap in three years, you get you sack
- 11:14Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers on your first line. I thought that was cool.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Thank you, Jeff, we'll talk to you soon. It's ESPN's
- 11:22Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald who makes great friends with Sean Payton.
- 11:25Speaker 3: They go to dinner.
- 11:26Speaker 1: He gives them the opportunity
