- 0:59Speaker 1: Here y'are welcome to this week's show. I hope everybody
- 1:03is having a good Holy Thursday. I hope you persevered
- 1:09through lin. I certainly stumbled several times, but well, I
- 1:13hope you're now looking forward to a wonderful and blessed Easter.
- 1:17And remember tomorrow's a day of fastening an absence, and
- 1:22be sure to say the stations of the Cross at
- 1:24the very least at three pm. We'll pick back up
- 1:28on our topic of prayer today, but first let's continue
- 1:33with the questions and answers from radio replies regarding the Eucharist,
- 1:37and the questioner asked the priests or states, I should say, posits,
- 1:43I guess is the correct term. Christ's blood is not
- 1:46shed in the mass, and without the shedding of blood
- 1:48there is no remission. And they answer, Christ offered himself
- 1:52with the shedding of blood on cavalry. Without the shedding
- 1:55of blood, there would be no remission of sin. Yet,
- 1:58since the Mass is but an appation of cavalry with
- 2:01its shedding of blood, there is no real difficulty. There
- 2:04is a difficulty for one who denies the sacrifice of
- 2:07the Mass, for without that there is no fulfillment of
- 2:09Malachi's prophecy, and there will be offered, that there will
- 2:13be offered in every place a clean oblation without the
- 2:16shedding of blood, from the rising to the setting of
- 2:18the sun. The person asked, did not Popeittis of the
- 2:22third and twelve oh eight first teach the dogma that
- 2:25the mass is a sacrifice? They say no. He merely
- 2:28insisted upon the doctrine which had always been held by Christians,
- 2:31that the Mass is a sacrifice in the true sense
- 2:33of the Gospel teaching. If the idea was not Catholic
- 2:36doctrine until twelve eight, why did Saint Irenaeus in the
- 2:39year one eighty, over one thousand years earlier, write that
- 2:43Christ commands his disciples to offer sacrifice to God not
- 2:46because God needed it, but that they might become more
- 2:49pleasing to God. And if he goes on to show
- 2:52that the container that the continued offering of the Eucharistic
- 2:55sacrifice is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Malachi, which
- 3:00manifestly predicted that the Jewish people would cease to offer
- 3:02to God and that a new and pure sacrifice would
- 3:05be offered to Him in every place by the Gentiles.
- 3:09Let me see. I think it's some abbreviation Sara. I'm
- 3:12not quite sure of if Iron, as Bishop of Leon,
- 3:15could write that in could write that in a second century.
- 3:20It is a little use to assert that Catholics did
- 3:22not believe the Mass to be a true sacrifice until
- 3:25the year twelve oh eight. And the person says, Catholics
- 3:28speak of the Mass as if they meant the real
- 3:31death of Christ, and calculate its mathematical value. And the answer, no,
- 3:36no Catholic has ever believed that Christ is really slain
- 3:38in the Mass. They have never gone beyond the words
- 3:41of scripture. As often as you do, as often as
- 3:45you do this, you shall show the death of the
- 3:47Lord until he comes again. Nor did any theologian attempt
- 3:50of mathematical calculation as to the efficacy of the Mass.
- 3:54They knew that mathematics could never express it. The theological
- 3:58value of the maths is perfectly legitimate. Is a perfectly
- 4:02legitimate question for any man to ask who seeks deeper
- 4:05knowledge of the Christian doctrine. The person says, according to
- 4:09Cardinal Vaughan, Catholics think. The Catholics think the Mass is
- 4:12better than Calvary. And the answer that is that sweeping
- 4:15statement is not justified by Cardinal Vaughan's qualified doctrine so
- 4:20far as the practical effects on the sole are concerned.
- 4:22He writes, the Holy Mass has in some senses the
- 4:25advantage over cavalry, and he was right. No Catholic think that.
- 4:31No Catholics think that the Mass is in itself better
- 4:34than Calvary, for it is cavalry reapplied, depending upon and
- 4:38deriving all its value from Calvary. As often as you
- 4:41come to do this, said Christ, you shall show the
- 4:44death of the Lord until he comes, and that death
- 4:47took place upon Calvary. Yet the Mass has this advantage
- 4:50that while the death of Christ upon the cross occurred
- 4:53in one place only and before only a few people,
- 4:57Calvary reapplied in Mass can occur in many places and
- 5:00before multitudes. The person says, excuse me, Christ offered the
- 5:08Last Supper in the evening. Why do you not have
- 5:10Mass in the evening instead of the morning? And they answered,
- 5:13it is not essential that Mass should be offered in
- 5:15the evening, but simply that the Mass should be offered.
- 5:18Mass in the evening, of course, would be quite valid,
- 5:21and by the church making use of her God given
- 5:23power to regulate all that pertains to disciplinary matters, has
- 5:27decreed that it should be celebrated in the morning. This
- 5:30law is in honor of the fact that Christ rose
- 5:32from the dead in the early morning, thus completing his
- 5:34work of redemption. Person asks why does the Catholic Church
- 5:38give communion under one kind only? And at this point,
- 5:42this was nineteen twenties thirties, it was common just to
- 5:47receive the Eucharus in form the bread, not the wine.
- 5:52There are many reasons for that. Of course, Postvatican Two
- 5:55we now can receive under both forms. But there's another
- 5:59word that I was searching for. Species, I guess, but
- 6:04you know, during COVID and such, once again we only
- 6:07got the body of Christ, not the blood. But remember
- 6:12the blood and body and blood are in both. It's
- 6:16not you get the body and not the blood when
- 6:19you receive the eucharistic wafer, if you want to call
- 6:21it that, that is the body and blood of Christ.
- 6:25The answer for many grave reasons, this custom includes in
- 6:29a practical way that Christ is completely present under either kind.
- 6:34It excludes the heretical doctrine that it is absolutely necessary
- 6:37for communion to partake of the chalice it removes the
- 6:41danger of irreverence to the precious blood by upsetting or
- 6:44spilling it. It spares the recipients to celebrate mass and
- 6:47distribute communion without keeping. It spares the recipients the danger
- 6:53of infection by their drinking from the same chalice. It
- 6:56enables a priest to celebrate mass and distribute communion with
- 7:00out keeping the congregation an undue length of time, a
- 7:03reason which has particular force in the Catholic Church, where
- 7:06hundreds go to communion at early masses. It secures uniformity
- 7:09of practice throughout the church. For whilst flower is easily
- 7:12obtained for the purposes of bread and easily kept, wine
- 7:15cannot be secured in sufficient quantities in many countries, above
- 7:19all and foreign missions. Person says, Jesus gave himself one
- 7:23of the forms of bread and wine. You were not
- 7:25justified in withholding the cup from the lady, and the
- 7:27answer the fact that the Catholic Church does so is
- 7:29sufficient proof that she has justified in doing so. However,
- 7:33let us view this, let us view the theology of
- 7:35the matter. Jesus gave himself under both kinds, yet he
- 7:39was completely present in either kind. He receives either kind
- 7:42receives the whole Christ. In any case, Christ, being risen,
- 7:46dies no more. It is not possible now to separate
- 7:49Christ's body and blood. In actual fact, wherever, wherever, and
- 7:54wholly under the appearances of wine. No, there we go skip, sorry,
- 7:58skip a line. Wherever Christ is as there he is
- 8:02whole and entire. He is wholly under the appearance of bread,
- 8:05and wholly under the appearance of wine. In receiving the
- 8:08blessed sacrament under the form of bread, the communicant receives
- 8:11the blood of Christ. Also, in receiving under the form
- 8:14of wine alone, he would receive the body. Also, there
- 8:17is no possibility of receiving the body of Christ without
- 8:19the blood of Christ. And the person says, whatever the
- 8:23theory may be, I object to the anti Christian practice.
- 8:26And they answered, the practice is not anti Christian. Reception
- 8:29under one kind only is quite sufficient for holy communion.
- 8:33Our Lord said simply, if any man eat of this bread,
- 8:35he should live forever. For the bread that I will
- 8:38give is my flesh for the life of the whole world.
- 8:40John six fifty two. In the early Church, communion was
- 8:45at times given to little children by giving them a
- 8:47few drops of the consecrated wine only. The martyrs would
- 8:50often only take into the arena within the blessed sacrament
- 8:53of the form of bread only wrapped in lebanon, to
- 8:56give themselves communion before death. The practice is quite in
- 9:00accordance with the doctor Saint Paul. Whosoever shall eat or
- 9:04drink unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood
- 9:07of the Lord First Corinthians eleven twenty seven. Oh, and
- 9:11I guess there's one more question here. The person says,
- 9:15eat or drink is not in my Protestant Bible, and
- 9:18they answer, it is not in the Authorized Bible. You
- 9:21will find it in the revised version. Protestant scholars admit
- 9:24that the substitution and for of No Protestants admit. Protestant
- 9:31scholars admit that the substitution of and for or in
- 9:35the Authorized version was an inexcusable mistranslation of the Greek
- 9:39for polemical purposes. There we go, so, as always, Protestant
- 9:44Bibles are faults and counterfeit, and you need a Catholic Bible,
- 9:49because yes, they did purposely change the words of Christ
- 9:52and the apostles to fit heretical doctrines. So the King
- 9:56James version has no place in a Catholic home. Whatever
- 10:00the Good Word Bible, whatever the Gideon Bible, the fad
- 10:04Bible of the day no place in a Catholic home,
- 10:07and really are false, counterfeit and heretical and should not
- 10:14really not be allowed to be printed. I mean the
- 10:17Catholic Church used to forbid the printing of false, heretical,
- 10:20fake counterfeit Bibles. Since the so called Protestant Reformation, the
- 10:26world has been flooded with false translations meant to I
- 10:32should say, counterfeit translations meant to fit false doctrines invented
- 10:37by Luther and Calvin. And who knows how many sents
- 10:41those are not real Bibles. You can be absolutely confident
- 10:45in saying to your Baptist friends, who says the only
- 10:48believes in the King James version, Who can say the
- 10:50words of Jesus were changed in that Bible? Your Bible
- 10:54is false and your church based on that Bible is false.
- 10:59You have no authority. The Catholic Church, with its real Bible,
- 11:03is the only church and the only real Bible. So anyway,
- 11:07let's get on to ah prayer. More pleasant subject. The
- 11:12angelists Father Sparrago says, if the Mohammedan Mohammedan that's a Muslim,
- 11:17three times a day, turns his face toward Mecca and
- 11:20calls upon God and his prophet Mohammed, how much more
- 11:24ought the Christian frequently to look up to Heaven during
- 11:26the day and invoke the Divine Redeemer and his plessed Mother.
- 11:31The Angelus is the prayer which is to be recited morning,
- 11:34noon and night when the bell rings in honor of
- 11:36the Mother of God and an adoration of the mystery
- 11:38of the incarnation. And actually in more recent years, remember
- 11:43this book was written in the eighteen nineties, when people
- 11:48was probably written in the eighteen seventies and eighties, but
- 11:50published in the eighteen nineties. Regardless, people live closer to the churches,
- 11:54and they set their lives by the sound of the
- 11:58bell ringing at their local Catholic church. Most of us
- 12:01don't have that anymore, nothing like it. But recently Father
- 12:08Ripperser and I think a few other of the Catholic
- 12:12exorcist official exorcists have issued statements saying that praying the
- 12:17Angelus at six am, noon, at six pm totally rids
- 12:22one of all demonic influence drives demonic influence from your home,
- 12:26your family or whatever. Very very good practice. So to
- 12:31do that's one of the things I would I need
- 12:33to start doing in this next year. I'm lucky if
- 12:36I remember say it once a day. And I don't
- 12:38wear a watch. And I hate watches, Okay, I hate clocks.
- 12:42I had never looked at the clock, well, rarely look
- 12:44at a clock. I look to see, you know, when's
- 12:48the game coming on. That's about the order I looked at,
- 12:50you know, the clock to see, you know, I got
- 12:52to get ready, to get ready for mass or something
- 12:53like that. But being self employed, I do not live
- 12:56by a clock. I don't have a set an alarm.
- 12:59I wake up when I wake up, I go to
- 13:00sleep when I go to sleep. As long as I
- 13:02get my work done, you know, that's sufficient. But I
- 13:06need to figure out some way to begin to pray
- 13:10the angelists morning, noon and night. Some way I may
- 13:15have to figure that out, and I hope it does
- 13:18not require living by a clock or a watch, because
- 13:21that's something I absolutely detest. Well, anyway, the let's see
- 13:29the words are as follows the Angel of the Lord,
- 13:32that's the archangel Gabriel announced him to marry the birth
- 13:35of the Savior, and she conceived the Holy ghosts through
- 13:37the operation of the Holy Ghost, she became mother of God. Okay,
- 13:41he's explaining as it goes. So the Angel of the
- 13:44Lord declared to marry, and she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Okay,
- 13:48so he explains. The Angel of the Lord, the archangel
- 13:50Gabriel announced him to marry the birth of the Savior,
- 13:53and she conceived the Holy ghost or the operation of
- 13:56the Holy Ghost, she became mother of God. Number two,
- 13:59behold the handmaid the Lord. Be it done unto me
- 14:01according to thy word. And he explains by these words,
- 14:05Mary drew down from above the Son of God. And
- 14:08the third and the Word was made flesh and dwelt
- 14:12among us. And he explains the word the Son of
- 14:15God was main flesh and dwelt among us. For thirty
- 14:17three years he lived on earth. The custom of ringing
- 14:20the Angelus bell three times a day results from the
- 14:24period of the Crusades round ten ninety five. The first
- 14:28bell was only rung twice a day, half an hour
- 14:32before sunrise and half an hour before sunset, to call
- 14:35upon the faithful to pray God for the success of
- 14:37the successor of the crusader's arms, that the crusaders would
- 14:41be successful. In other words, the midday bell was added
- 14:44about three centuries and a half later the first. At first,
- 14:48the prayer was considered only of a pattern Nostra and
- 14:52Our Father. Afterwards Sava Maria was added. The manner of
- 14:55ringing three separate times at the interval of about a minute,
- 15:01and Ave Maria being said each time was introduced by
- 15:04the order of the Holy See, the object of the
- 15:06prayer being to entreat to the Mother of God to
- 15:08exterminate the heresies that had origin. The Angelus, as it
- 15:12is now said, is of a more recent date. In
- 15:15some places, after the evening Angelis's bell sounds again to
- 15:18it monish. In some places, after the evening Angelus, the
- 15:22bell sounds again to admonish the faithful to pray for
- 15:25the soul's in purgatory. Pope Clement the twelfth granted an
- 15:29indulgent of one hundred days to all who, hearing the bell,
- 15:32should recite kneeling one Our Father and the Hell Mary
- 15:36with the versical eternal rest. Give to them, o Lord,
- 15:38and let perpetual light shine upon them. Now the rosary
- 15:42the suppliant who prays fervently is wont to repeat over
- 15:46and over again the words which come from the depth
- 15:49of the heart. Our Lord did this on the Mount
- 15:51of Olive, On Mount olivet there we go, David in
- 15:55the psalm. I don't know what that number is, see
- 15:59x x x V. I don't remember what that is.
- 16:01What one hundred and thirty five? I think that's right,
- 16:04exclaims no less than twenty seven times his mercy in
- 16:08durreath forever. And Saint Francis of ASSISI spent whole nights
- 16:12repeating my God and my all. The devout servants of
- 16:16Mary used to address her frequently, and the words of
- 16:19the archangel adding one ave maria to another as one
- 16:23places rose in a wreath. The Rosary is a prayer
- 16:27in which the Our Father, followed by ten hell Marys,
- 16:29is repeated five or fifteen times, accompanied by meditation on
- 16:33the life, the Passion, and the exultation of the Redeemer.
- 16:36We begin the Rosary with the Creed and three hell
- 16:39Marys for the increase within us of the three theological virtues.
- 16:43While reciting the Rosary, everyone must hold his own rosary
- 16:47in his hand and touches the bead as he says
- 16:50his prayers. But as several persons join in, it's only
- 16:53necessary for one to hold the rosary in order thereby
- 16:56to regulate the number of the prayers. The Rosary is
- 16:58divided into the joyful, the sorrowful, and the glorious mysteries.
- 17:01Of course, now we have the luminous mysteries as well.
- 17:04In the first we honor God, the Father who sent
- 17:06us the Savior, and the second God, the Son who
- 17:08redeemed Misson. In the third, God the holy Ghost, who
- 17:10sanctifizes us. The rosary owes its origin to Saint Dominic.
- 17:15I'm gonna sip of water here the hermits, the hermits
- 17:23of the first centuries, who could not read the psalter,
- 17:25used suicite one our Father and one hell Mary in
- 17:28the place of every psalm, and in order to note
- 17:30the number they had said, they made use of small
- 17:33stones or of seeds throng in a court. Saint Dominic
- 17:37was the first who made the customer general of substituting
- 17:40one hundred and fifty hill marys for one hundred and
- 17:42fifty psalms. Hence the rosary used to be called the
- 17:45psalter of Mary. When about the year twelve hundred, the
- 17:49heresies of the Albergensians we'll just go that wrought great
- 17:55mischief in the south of France and north of Italy.
- 17:57Saint Dominic was commissioned by the Pope to reach and
- 18:00refutation of the erroneous tenets. His efforts availed little, and
- 18:04he besought the aid of the Mother of God. She
- 18:05appeared to him and bade him make use of the
- 18:08Rosary as a weapon against her enemies. He accordingly introduced
- 18:11it everywhere, and before long it had affected the conversion
- 18:15of more than one hundred thousand heretics. The use of
- 18:19the Rosary soon spread throughout Christendom and became a most
- 18:22popular devotion. It is a method of prayer at once
- 18:25simple and sublime. The prayers are so easy that a
- 18:28child can repeat them, and the mysteries are so profound
- 18:30that they supply a subject from meditation to the most
- 18:33learned theologians. It is a prayer of contemplation as well
- 18:37as a prayer of supplication, for it places before the
- 18:40mind the principal truths of the faith. The Rosary is
- 18:43a compendium of the Gospels, a complete and practical manual
- 18:46of instruction, wherein the chief points of Christian doctrine are
- 18:50presented under the guise of prayer. By meditation on the
- 18:53events of our Lord's life. Faith and charity are increase
- 18:58from the example of our divine redem where we learn
- 19:00to be humble, gentle, obedient. We are incited to imitate
- 19:04the virtues which the mysteries teach describe after what they
- 19:07promise us. Moreover, the union of vocal and mental prayer
- 19:10makes the rosary easy, pleasant, and profitable. As a method
- 19:14of prayer. It is unrival The longer and more devoutly
- 19:17is practiced, the more one appreciates its excellence and becomes
- 19:20convinced of its supernatural origin. The rosary is well pleasing
- 19:25to God because of its humility, and because of it
- 19:27it is an imitation of the unceasing song of praise
- 19:31sung by the angels. The rosary is the prayer of
- 19:34the humble, for in it well known truths are simply
- 19:37stated and constantly repeated. The proud despise it. But God
- 19:40who looks down on low things Psalms c XII, what
- 19:46is that? Twelve? I think that's right. I'm good with
- 19:51the eyes, the v's and the exes. When we start
- 19:54getting to the seas, I started getting confused. Okay, the
- 19:59God who looks down low things approves it. It is
- 20:02an imitation of the angel song. We read in the
- 20:04Holy Scripture that the angelic criers cried around another, Holy, Holy,
- 20:08Holy Lord, God of Host. All the earth is full
- 20:11of his glory Isaiah sixth three. And when we recite
- 20:14the rosary, we praise the Mother of God in a
- 20:16similar matter manner. It is beyond doubt that this form
- 20:20of prayer is most acceptable to the Mother of God,
- 20:23for when she appeared at Lord's she had a rosary
- 20:26in her hand. Pope Pious the Ninth unhesitatingly a search
- 20:29that is her gift of men, and that she loves
- 20:31no other prayer as well. The rosary is a most
- 20:35useful devotion, for by it we obtain great graces and
- 20:39sure help in time of trouble. Many indulgences are besides
- 20:43attached to it. The rosary is a very treasury of graces.
- 20:47Many sinners owe their conversion to it. It possesses marvelous
- 20:50power to banish sin and to restore, to the restore
- 20:53the transgressor to a state of grace. By it the
- 20:57just growing virtue. All the saints who have lived subsequently
- 21:00to the institution of the Rosary have been assiduous in
- 21:03its use, and this may have contributed largely to their sanctification.
- 21:08Several holy bishops and servants of God are known to
- 21:11have pledged themselves by vow to recite it daily. Saint
- 21:14Charles Borromeo, despite the numerous and pressing duties of his position,
- 21:18recited it every day with the seminarians. He says different
- 21:25seminarists and members of his household. Blessed Clement Hofbauer was
- 21:30accustomed to say the Rosary while passing through the streets
- 21:32of Vienna, and rarely did he recited in vain for
- 21:35the conversion of a sinner. It is recorded of several
- 21:38distinguished officers and victorious commanders that they never engaged in
- 21:42battle without first saying the Rosary, and to this they
- 21:45attributed their military successes. The Rosary has been called the
- 21:49thermometer of Christianity for the reason that where it is
- 21:52diligently recited, faith is ardent and good works are manifest,
- 21:56and whereas neglected religion is at a low ebb. In
- 22:00seasons of general calamity, miraculous aid has been granted to
- 22:03Christendom by means of the Rosary. This was especially the
- 22:06case and the wars with Turkey. The victory of Laponto
- 22:10fifteen seventy one, the deliverance of Vienna in sixteen eighty three,
- 22:15the victory of Belgrade were all owing to the power
- 22:18of the Rosary. It is said that the beads of
- 22:21the Chaplain did more execution than the bullets of the soldiers.
- 22:25It was in thanksgiving for these victories on the first
- 22:29Sunday of October. It was in thanksgiving for these victories
- 22:32that the Holy See instituted the feasts of the Rosary.
- 22:35On the first Sunday of October. Pope six to fourth
- 22:38declared that many dangers which threatened the world are averted
- 22:42and the wrath of God is appeased by the prayers
- 22:44of the Rosary. Our Holy Father Leo the thirteenth says
- 22:48that in Saint Dominic's time the Rosary proved a sure
- 22:52remedy for the evils of the age, so it may
- 22:55now affect much toward the amelioration of the eels. At
- 22:57Aflick society, everyone who is the Rosary must feel its
- 23:01supernatural power there is no prayer which affords more consolation
- 23:05and affliction, more tranquility to the troubled breast. It sues
- 23:09in sorrow. It imparts the peace spoken of in the Gospel.
- 23:12Another proof of its excellence is the hatred contempt, wherewith
- 23:16unbelievers regarded, the devil incites them to cry. What is
- 23:21a fruitful source of grace to the Christian and by
- 23:24which souls are wrested from his grasp? The Rosary has
- 23:27been richly indulgenced by the Holy See, and the recital
- 23:30of it strongly urged upon the faithful. An indulgence of
- 23:33one hundred days may be gained for every potter and
- 23:36ave if five consecutive decades be set on a properly
- 23:40indulgence Rosary. Our Holy Father Lee of the thirteenth has
- 23:43decreed that every day during the month of October, the Rosary,
- 23:47together with litany of Loretto, be set in church, either
- 23:50during the parish Mass or in the afternoon, with the
- 23:53blessed Sacrament exposed. For every time of assisting at this devotion,
- 23:57seven years and seven quarantines are granted. Pious of ninth
- 24:02bequeathed bequeathed as a legacy to the faithful. This is
- 24:05my admonition. Let the Rosary, this simple, beautiful method of prayer,
- 24:10enrich with so many indulgences, be habitually recited of an
- 24:13evening in every household. These are my last words to you,
- 24:17the memorial I leave behind me again, he said, in
- 24:20the whole of the Vatican, there is no greater treasury
- 24:22than the Rosary. All right, I'm gonna wrap it up there.
- 24:28I do wish everyone a wonderful Easter, and I'll talk
- 24:33to you next week.
