- 0:00Speaker 1: How does JT drink his coffee? We're going to tell
- 0:02Speaker 1: you in just a moment, but first, Crockett Coffee. Crockett Coffee,
- 0:06Speaker 1: started by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason,
- 0:09Speaker 1: named after David Crockett. Davey was a hunter, storyteller, patriot,
- 0:14Speaker 1: backwoods legend. Look at the logo here. Surfing on the
- 0:18Speaker 1: backs of crocodiles. That tells you everything you need to
- 0:20Speaker 1: know about the attitude with this coffee. 100% pure Arabica,
- 0:23Speaker 1: high altitude beans, small batch roasted right here in America,
- 0:28Speaker 1: in Tennessee. And right in the heart of the country.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It ships fresh roasted. It's not sitting on a warehouse
- 0:34Speaker 1: shelf for six months. Light, medium, dark, decaf, organic, even
- 0:39Speaker 1: a mushroom blend is available. Whole bean, ground, or K-cups.
- 0:43Speaker 1: However you make it in the morning, it's available to you, Chad.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You can set up a subscription and it shows up
- 0:48Speaker 2: on your schedule, not theirs, your schedule. Change it or
- 0:51Speaker 2: cancel it anytime you want as the free market intended.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Free shipping on orders of $ 59 or more and there's
- 0:56Speaker 2: a discount for veterans today. And Crockett partners with Tunnels
- 0:59Speaker 2: to Towers, building mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen
- 1:02Speaker 2: service members and for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Good coffee, made in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com. That's Crockett, C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, coffee.com. CrockettCoffee.com.
- 1:17Speaker 2: JT's a psychopath.
- 1:18Speaker 3: That's what we.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Learned during the break. During the break, we find out
- 1:23Speaker 1: that JT drinks his coffee out of a very specific cup.
- 1:28Speaker 3: JT, can you show us the cup you drink your
- 1:30Speaker 3: coffee out of?
- 1:32Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's a plastic cup, and every morning it's
- 1:36Speaker 4: this and two. It's Crockett coffee, and it's two pieces
- 1:41Speaker 4: of ice to cool it down because I don't want
- 1:44Speaker 4: my coffee just scalding.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Is that like a form of plastic that can wither?
- 1:49Speaker 2: So you're pouring it in hot and then putting ice
- 1:52Speaker 2: in it.
- 1:52Speaker 4: I mean, there's probably some stuff in it that probably
- 1:55Speaker 4: will kill me early, but, yeah, that's how I like it.
- 1:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Well, this is the strangest thing.
- 2:01Speaker 2: We got it out of the way now, so I'm
- 2:02Speaker 2: not going to make it my primary complaint, but I've
- 2:04Speaker 2: never heard of anyone that needs to drink coffee from
- 2:07Speaker 2: just a plastic cup. like you would drink Kool-Aid out
- 2:09Speaker 2: of when you're nine years old.
- 2:10Speaker 4: I don't go to Cracker Barrel and say, can you
- 2:13Speaker 4: please bring me a cup to put, you know, a
- 2:15Speaker 4: plastic cup to pour my coffee into. But if I'm
- 2:18Speaker 4: at the house, I prefer it. And the only way
- 2:21Speaker 4: you'll ever see me drink it is, so it's not
- 2:23Speaker 4: chocolate milk. It's coffee in a plastic cup.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But are you just against mugs? You don't like the
- 2:29Speaker 1: way you have to hold it or something?
- 2:31Speaker 3: Maybe it's, yeah, I don't know where I'm going to
- 2:33Speaker 3: go here.
- 2:33Speaker 4: But I don't like the feel of that up against
- 2:35Speaker 4: my mouth.
- 2:36Speaker 3: So it's just weird. That's what she said. Do you
- 2:41Speaker 3: get all limp-wristed with a coffee mug? I've got to
- 2:43Speaker 3: get back to work, guys.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I don't know what was happening yesterday when I was
- 2:51Speaker 2: trying to show the mug.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I promise I work out regularly. I don't know why.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I felt like I was lifting a boulder, pushing a
- 2:58Speaker 2: boulder up a hill to lift up a coffee mug yesterday.
- 3:01Speaker 2: My hand and wrist went totally limp as I did it.
- 3:05Speaker 2: That's probably what JT wants to avoid on this show.
- 3:07Speaker 3: So he's like, you know what?
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'm just going to hold a cup of Kool-Aid, of Ovaltine,
- 3:11Speaker 2: is what it looked like in his cup. I'm going
- 3:12Speaker 2: to hold this like a man instead of holding up
- 3:14Speaker 2: a coffee mug. I've never heard of anybody who doesn't
- 3:16Speaker 2: drink coffee or prefers not to drink coffee out of
- 3:19Speaker 2: a mug or out of like a heavy-duty portable to-go
- 3:22Speaker 2: cup like you would get at a nice coffee place,
- 3:26Speaker 2: other than JT.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Chad, look at the money being spit on quarterbacks. Everyone
- 3:32Speaker 1: knows that's huge money in college football right now. But
- 3:35Speaker 1: as far as return on investment, I'm curious what you
- 3:38Speaker 1: would say. I've got my answer, too. You're going to
- 3:40Speaker 1: see this right now. The money and return on investment
- 3:44Speaker 1: on who you think is not going to actually come
- 3:48Speaker 1: through with earning their money.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I've got mine right off the bat.
- 3:58Speaker 2: You've got yours on who's not going to come through
- 4:00Speaker 2: for the money.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Who's not going to meet the, the, the expectation based
- 4:06Speaker 1: on pay for me.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I think so.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It also goes down, you know, we talked about this
- 4:12Speaker 2: with DGG, David Gabriel, Georgia's like, what is the smart investment? Right.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Okay. So there's one that jumps out to me on
- 4:18Speaker 3: this list.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I know as we're looking right now, there's 13 quarterbacks
- 4:22Speaker 2: and Mark J Burns at sport and state did a
- 4:24Speaker 2: good job writing.
- 4:24Speaker 3: This on this. Um, The one that jumps out to
- 4:28Speaker 3: me is Josh Hoover.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Josh Hoover in 2024 at TCU set a single-season passing record.
- 4:35Speaker 2: 2025 was not as good for him. But also, it's
- 4:40Speaker 2: the way I feel about Josh Heupel in run games.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Indiana's going to be good at quarterback. You don't have
- 4:48Speaker 2: to spend $ 4. 5 million. They did, and that's great. And
- 4:51Speaker 2: they're bringing in a guy who started a lot of games.
- 4:53Speaker 2: to their program, but you see where I'm going with this.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Kurt Cignetti's offense and what he's built with his offensive
- 4:59Speaker 2: line and what he's built with the skill positions, I
- 5:02Speaker 2: don't know that you need to invest $ 4. 5 million for
- 5:04Speaker 2: one year into Josh Hoover. Now, they were going to
- 5:07Speaker 2: pay that with someone else too, but I don't know
- 5:09Speaker 2: if that's necessary. I feel the same way about DGG.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I think it's a smart investment, but I would also
- 5:14Speaker 2: say Josh Heupel gets three-star running backs to win SEC
- 5:20Speaker 2: Offensive Player of the Year or rush for 1,000 yards.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Deshaun Bishop's a former walk-on.
- 5:25Speaker 2: He didn't have a scholarship when he got to Tennessee,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and he's now a clear leader of the team and
- 5:29Speaker 2: had a great season last year and should have a
- 5:31Speaker 2: good season this year too. So do you want to
- 5:33Speaker 2: spend over $ 2 million for a running back? I feel
- 5:36Speaker 2: the same way about some of these guys with their
- 5:37Speaker 2: head coaches. For me, it's Darian Mensah. Six million plus.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I mean, he's making more than Trinidad Chambliss.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Really? He's making more than Dante Moore, who's the front-runner
- 5:51Speaker 3: with the Heisman? Yeah, everybody, apparently. By the way, best
- 5:54Speaker 3: bang for the buck was Oklahoma State. Yes.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And I love seeing Oklahoma State appear on this list
- 6:00Speaker 2: for this reason. I haven't thought about Oklahoma State in
- 6:02Speaker 2: about five years.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I agree, man.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Since Gundy started going south. And that was a program
- 6:06Speaker 2: that was routinely in the top 25 for.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Years under Gundy, right? They were one of those. Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I would look at Oklahoma State like I did Wisconsin.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Like never great, but always good, always steady. You kind
- 6:19Speaker 2: of knew what you were going to get with them, right?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Jim Knowles did a great job when he was defensive
- 6:23Speaker 2: coordinator under Gundy at Oklahoma State. I like seeing that
- 6:27Speaker 2: investment because we know T-Bone Pickens is no longer alive.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah, he's no longer alive. No, he's not. He passed away. Okay,
- 6:33Speaker 3: thank you. I've been known to kill people on air
- 6:36Speaker 3: before they're dead.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Spodman, yeah, he's dead. But they've got money at Oklahoma
- 6:42Speaker 2: State is my point. And I like that they're spending
- 6:45Speaker 2: it there on the quarterback, and they're helping out Eric
- 6:46Speaker 2: Morris in year one. So that was a welcome addition
- 6:49Speaker 2: to this list of high spenders for me, for Oklahoma State,
- 6:52Speaker 2: because I want to see more teams become relevant and
- 6:55Speaker 2: spend money and get good again.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They brought his entire staff with him, right?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yes. Like the quarterback. Okay. That's huge.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I mean, we've seen that work plenty across the country.
- 7:09Speaker 1: If you bring the staff with the quarterback, normally it
- 7:12Speaker 1: jumpstarts everything. And the quarterback's comfortable in control. I realize
- 7:17Speaker 1: everybody else has got to learn the offense, but distribution
- 7:21Speaker 1: is the name of the game here. Call the play
- 7:24Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage. Be able to stay out
- 7:26Speaker 1: of the wrong play is maybe just as important as
- 7:29Speaker 1: making a big play.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Well, here's the other thing, too, Hutton.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You mentioned Mensah, which I think is kind of crazy, too.
- 7:37Speaker 2: The number is over $ 6 million. Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Seems like.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Were you really going to get that somewhere else, or
- 7:41Speaker 2: did you just milk Miami for all you could get?
- 7:44Speaker 1: What did he make previously?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Was it four? He made, I think, three and a
- 7:50Speaker 3: half or four at Duke. Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And they paid a lot. I remember that was a
- 7:55Speaker 2: big deal. It's like, Duke's paying this much money?
- 7:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Or Duke's paying $ 4 million for a quarterback and not
- 8:00Speaker 2: a point guard?
- 8:00Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 8:01Speaker 2: With basketball, that was shocking to everyone for Manny Diaz
- 8:05Speaker 2: and Duke, who got to the.
- 8:06Speaker 3: ACC championship game.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You know, a year ago. And so they had a
- 8:11Speaker 2: good season with Mensa. I just, I look at some
- 8:14Speaker 2: of these dollar figures. Here's the other alarming thing to
- 8:16Speaker 2: me about this. Names that you do not see on
- 8:20Speaker 2: this list.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yes, here we go.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Bryce Underwood, Jared Curtis, Faison Brandon, young guys who probably
- 8:28Speaker 2: signed a multi-year NIL deal with their current schools when
- 8:32Speaker 2: they did it, which is a good bet, right? They're
- 8:33Speaker 2: probably making two and a half, three million, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 2: or something like that for multiple years. But I see
- 8:39Speaker 2: these numbers, Hutton, and I'm thinking, boy, those schools are
- 8:42Speaker 2: going to have to up the ante at some point along.
- 8:44Speaker 3: The way, maybe after year one, maybe after year two.
- 8:47Speaker 2: But I see where these numbers are headed right now,
- 8:50Speaker 2: and I'm thinking, that's going to be a discount if
- 8:53Speaker 2: Jared Curtis is what they think he is, right? Tennessee
- 8:56Speaker 2: is getting Faison Brandon at a discount if he's really
- 8:58Speaker 2: good in year one. Based on what they paid him
- 9:00Speaker 2: out of high school, you're going to have to renegotiate
- 9:03Speaker 2: and pay those guys more at some point, likely.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Look at the numbers, Chad. This is what Nico was
- 9:08Speaker 3: asking for. You know? Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 1: He was asking for four, right? Is that what he
- 9:14Speaker 1: went up to? Or was he going higher than that?
- 9:16Speaker 3: I think he went five. I think he went higher
- 9:19Speaker 3: than that.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Again, it's when are they going to do that? It
- 9:23Speaker 3: wasn't the time. No.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I mean, they just got smacked by Ohio State in
- 9:28Speaker 2: the playoff game, too, where that defense did what they
- 9:31Speaker 2: wanted to them.
- 9:32Speaker 3: It was bad timing. And it was also kind of
- 9:34Speaker 3: a hostage situation.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Like, I'm going to go through spring and then get
- 9:38Speaker 2: close to the orange and white game and then decide
- 9:40Speaker 2: I'm going to leave if I don't get this money.
- 9:42Speaker 2: So Tennessee just felt like, we're not going to be
- 9:45Speaker 2: held hostage by you or anyone, and we've got to
- 9:47Speaker 2: take a stand against this, and we're going to go
- 9:49Speaker 2: a different direction and spend that money elsewhere. And they
- 9:51Speaker 2: spent the money wisely on Joey Aguilar, who happened to
- 9:54Speaker 2: fall in their lap because UCLA spent big money on Nico.
- 9:57Speaker 2: And look, Nico didn't pay off in year one. I
- 10:00Speaker 2: think he was making less than he was at Tennessee
- 10:01Speaker 2: for UCLA.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Oh, he was.
- 10:03Speaker 2: It did not pay off for them in year one, right?
- 10:05Speaker 2: So what's that going to look like in year two
- 10:08Speaker 2: for Nico?
- 10:09Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I just see these ballooning numbers of $ 5 million for
- 10:12Speaker 2: Trinidad Chambliss, $ 5 million for Dante Moore. I'm not saying
- 10:15Speaker 2: those guys are not worth it because they're getting paid it,
- 10:17Speaker 2: so they're worth it. to come back, but also, boy,
- 10:21Speaker 2: that's the cost of doing business if you hit on
- 10:23Speaker 2: a guy that's really good. Dante Moore was a big-time prospect.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Trinidad Chambliss was not when he transferred in, but he
- 10:30Speaker 2: has proven himself. And now he's hit that payday. But,
- 10:34Speaker 2: I mean, there's a cost to it. Like, having Keywon
- 10:38Speaker 2: Lacey and Trinidad Chambliss puts Ole Miss in the preseason
- 10:41Speaker 2: top ten, where I think they belong. But I guarantee
- 10:44Speaker 2: you they're taking a hit somewhere else on the roster. Well–
- 10:47Speaker 2: Because they can't pay someone else as much as they wanted.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Probably a lot of those guys who left for LSU.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Think about that.
- 10:53Speaker 1: For Trinidad Chandler to get the news that he's going
- 10:55Speaker 1: to be able to play another year, and it ends up,
- 10:59Speaker 1: it earns him $ 5 million.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Or whatever, $ 4. 5 million, whatever it was. Crazy. Insane. What's
- 11:05Speaker 3: all those decisions?
- 11:07Speaker 2: And a guy who's not a big pro prospect.
- 11:09Speaker 3: No, no. So, I mean, this is it. You need
- 11:13Speaker 3: to figure out a way now.
- 11:14Speaker 2: You're going to make all this money, have another successful year.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And if your future is not in playing football, figure
- 11:20Speaker 2: out what you're doing next. But you've got such a
- 11:21Speaker 2: big nest egg to start with the money you've already
- 11:24Speaker 2: made in college.
- 11:25Speaker 3: It's a great jump start in your.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Life for these guys, too.
- 11:28Speaker 1: He's going from making those millions to, I don't know
- 11:33Speaker 1: where he would be drafted, but it's not going to
- 11:35Speaker 1: be a first-round, like, I don't think so, first-round guaranteed
- 11:39Speaker 1: check where you're getting the $ 40 million. It's slotted in
- 11:44Speaker 1: the second, third round where you make more through the
- 11:47Speaker 1: college route.
- 11:48Speaker 3: But the return on investment, man, I don't know.
- 11:51Speaker 1: How do these guys that are paying these, that are
- 11:54Speaker 1: donating this money— Is it just– it's not like they–
- 11:57Speaker 1: I don't see a bunch of names out there.
- 11:59Speaker 3: I see Spire.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I always go to Tennessee as an example because we
- 12:02Speaker 1: know those guys. But I don't see, like, individual names
- 12:06Speaker 1: getting the pat on the back for buying this player.
- 12:10Speaker 1: If it was about that, I feel like it would
- 12:12Speaker 1: be about the notoriety of it all, right?
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I don't see that very much.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I don't understand why you do it if you're not
- 12:22Speaker 1: doing it for the– you know, the accolade or the ownership,
- 12:28Speaker 1: so to speak.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yeah, look, it's a great point.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I mean, I know donating, you know, donating as a
- 12:35Speaker 1: fan is one thing. I'm talking about the millionaires that
- 12:37Speaker 1: are doing this.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Well, let's go back to the Faison Brandon example because
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm probably as well-versed at that as anyone out there.
- 12:43Speaker 2: And I follow Faison Brandon on Instagram. Faison Brandon did
- 12:46Speaker 2: a promo shoot with Sling TV. Sling TV, I think,
- 12:50Speaker 2: someone can correct me if I'm wrong, is owned by Dish.
- 12:53Speaker 2: which is a Tennessee-based company, I think founded by a
- 12:57Speaker 2: University of Tennessee graduate.
- 12:58Speaker 3: So that's a big donor for Tennessee. So that makes sense.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But I noticed the bottom of the screen the whole time,
- 13:04Speaker 2: for advertising inquiries, it's like Faison at Spiresports.com. He actually
- 13:12Speaker 2: has a Spiresports email address for all advertising inquiries to
- 13:17Speaker 2: Faison Brandon. So He is on a multi-year deal with
- 13:21Speaker 2: Spire Sports. Trey Wynn in the YouTube chat says, are
- 13:25Speaker 2: these guys all on one-year deals? The answer to that
- 13:28Speaker 2: is if you're the veteran guy transferring from one place
- 13:31Speaker 2: to finish your career out, yes. Or like Trinidad Chambliss,
- 13:34Speaker 2: the end of his career, yes, that's a one-year deal
- 13:36Speaker 2: because he's got no years after this. Josh Hoover, one-year deal,
- 13:39Speaker 2: for sure. I bring up Jared Curtis at Vandy. Underwood
- 13:44Speaker 2: at Michigan who's entering year two, Faison Brand at Tennessee.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Those are multi-year deals. But now what do we know
- 13:50Speaker 2: about multi-year deals in college football? They don't mean anything.
- 13:56Speaker 2: I'm like Joey Tribbiani and friends. I think I'm doing
- 13:58Speaker 2: the air quotes wrong when I say they don't mean anything.
- 14:02Speaker 2: They really don't mean anything because if you want to
- 14:04Speaker 2: break that two-year deal and go re-up like Nico and go–
- 14:09Speaker 2: negotiate with somebody else to get more money and then
- 14:12Speaker 2: go back to your school. There's nothing stopping you from
- 14:14Speaker 2: doing that. Other than we have seen some instances where
- 14:18Speaker 2: collectives will sue the player. or the school and what
- 14:22Speaker 2: they do is they settle on okay then we'll pay
- 14:24Speaker 2: this money back yeah you know he didn't fulfill this
- 14:26Speaker 2: so like here's a handshake agreement it never gets the
- 14:29Speaker 2: courts because they just buy them out you're basically buying
- 14:31Speaker 2: someone out of a contract.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And that's normally the homesick guys or whatever that doesn't
- 14:34Speaker 1: help you if you lose your quarterback though no like
- 14:37Speaker 1: great i got an extra.
- 14:39Speaker 2: 500k but i lost the guy i invested all this
- 14:42Speaker 2: time and energy to that knows the team and knows
- 14:44Speaker 2: the offense and that we were hoping was going to
- 14:46Speaker 2: be a long-term situation right That's what was lost with
- 14:50Speaker 2: Tennessee and Nico. That's the fear to me if you
- 14:55Speaker 2: are a Vandy fan, hell, an Alabama fan with Keelan Russell.
- 14:59Speaker 2: A Tennessee fan is, boy, this looks great right now,
- 15:04Speaker 2: and you're going to live through the learning curve and
- 15:06Speaker 2: all that with a young quarterback. But if they hit
- 15:09Speaker 2: big and it starts to show this guy's going to
- 15:10Speaker 2: be really good, you know in the back of your
- 15:13Speaker 2: mind you're fearful that what does this mean? Because now
- 15:16Speaker 2: they're going to demand more money and can my team
- 15:18Speaker 2: keep them?
- 15:20Speaker 3: That's the scary part of all this.
- 15:21Speaker 1: But no matter who the quarterback is, they're going to
- 15:24Speaker 1: demand the money now at that level. I would say,
- 15:27Speaker 1: what does it mean if you go with the younger quarterback?
- 15:30Speaker 1: It gives you a chance to build consistency, to sustain
- 15:35Speaker 1: an actual player, right? To build a program around the position. Otherwise,
- 15:41Speaker 1: it's a year-to-year deal every single year.
- 15:44Speaker 3: You know, like... it's tough to pull off what Georgia's
- 15:47Speaker 3: pulling off, you know?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Well, and that's what, like, you're looking, this is the
- 15:54Speaker 2: unfortunate part about it. I just don't think this exists
- 15:56Speaker 2: as much anymore in the college game. You know, like,
- 15:59Speaker 2: Al Wilson, when he was at Tennessee, wasn't looking around
- 16:02Speaker 2: the transfer portal.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Right. You know, he's from Jackson. He's like, I'm staying here.
- 16:07Speaker 3: We're winning. Like, by the time I get to be
- 16:08Speaker 3: a senior, he won a national title.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:10Speaker 3: You know, when he's there. But you feel like you're
- 16:13Speaker 3: partners in it.
- 16:15Speaker 2: If you're Al Wilson and the leadership on that team,
- 16:17Speaker 2: Peyton Manning was a partner to the University of Tennessee
- 16:20Speaker 2: or to the school. They weren't an employee. They were
- 16:24Speaker 2: partners on the whole thing. If I'm going to pay
- 16:27Speaker 2: Jonathan Hutton, I'm going to use you as an example again.
- 16:29Speaker 2: You're a stud quarterback coming out of Warren County High School,
- 16:32Speaker 2: and I'm at Vanderbilt, and I'm like, I am paying
- 16:34Speaker 2: Jonathan Hutton to partner with me. I'm paying Jonathan Hutton,
- 16:37Speaker 2: the Warren County pioneer, to partner with Vanderbilt football for
- 16:41Speaker 2: the next three years. Here is a three-year deal worth
- 16:43Speaker 2: $ 9 million, let's say, or whatever it is.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Boom. Hands are shaken. You sign the contract.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I am putting you over here as a part of
- 16:52Speaker 2: this thing. I'm not thinking about re-upping with you. I'm
- 16:55Speaker 2: not thinking about you coming back to renegotiate. I'm not
- 16:58Speaker 2: thinking about you bringing your wide receiver buddy somewhere else.
- 17:01Speaker 2: We're in this together now. And that's how coaches should
- 17:04Speaker 2: feel about it. I don't think the players feel that way.
- 17:06Speaker 2: And certainly those players' agents don't feel that way about
- 17:09Speaker 2: it because they're going to be looking for the next
- 17:11Speaker 2: thing to renegotiate. That's the unfortunate part of all this.
- 17:15Speaker 1: No one feels that way anymore at any tier of
- 17:18Speaker 1: the business of football. The coaches, the players, there's just no–
- 17:25Speaker 1: you're not threaded into the program.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But if you are going to– if it's about being
- 17:30Speaker 2: a pro and getting ready for the NFL, that's the
- 17:33Speaker 2: way NFL quarterbacks are when they sign a long-term deal.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 17:36Speaker 2: They become partners in the organization. Like now I'm at the,
- 17:39Speaker 2: I got a seat at the table. Not that they're
- 17:41Speaker 2: making the calls on personnel and all that, but you
- 17:43Speaker 2: know what I mean? Like, hey, Patrick Mahomes is a
- 17:46Speaker 2: partner with the.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Kansas City Chiefs. He ain't going anywhere anytime soon.
- 17:49Speaker 2: You know, when you sign for that money, Josh Allen
- 17:51Speaker 2: and the Bills, like we're in this thing together. We
- 17:54Speaker 2: need to be pulling the same direction. I want to
- 17:57Speaker 2: see more of that in college. That's why I don't
- 17:58Speaker 2: mind the three-year plan for a young stud quarterback the
- 18:02Speaker 2: way it was in the old days. You sign a
- 18:04Speaker 2: blue chip prospect, You think you're going to get two, three,
- 18:06Speaker 2: four years with them as the starter. That's great in theory.
- 18:10Speaker 2: But nowadays, they're all going to have their own agents
- 18:13Speaker 2: going to say, no, no, no, no, no. Look at
- 18:15Speaker 2: your stats this past year compared to these other freshmen.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You need to re-up. By the way, I got Michigan
- 18:20Speaker 2: on the line or Ohio State, and they're thinking about
- 18:23Speaker 2: adding you for one year. That's what pisses fans off.
- 18:27Speaker 2: And I get it. I get pissed off about that too.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Like if you're going to make that level of a
- 18:31Speaker 2: financial commitment to, by the way, kids from high school
- 18:35Speaker 2: that have never proven anything in college, my return on
- 18:38Speaker 2: that investment would be to that player. Again, I'm the
- 18:40Speaker 2: coach and Jonathan Hutton's the player. Is Jonathan, you're in
- 18:43Speaker 2: this with me now. Like we're going to build this
- 18:45Speaker 2: together and we're going to have success together. I don't
- 18:48Speaker 2: need you coming to my office after six months trying
- 18:50Speaker 2: to renegotiate this three-year deal. Yeah.
- 18:53Speaker 3: But it's going to be renegotiated. That's the problem with
- 18:56Speaker 3: the sport.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And I wish there was a way that the player
- 18:59Speaker 1: could say, Coach, I'm invested in you. Don't leave me
- 19:02Speaker 1: high and dry after a year. Don't bounce for the
- 19:07Speaker 1: extra million. But everybody's bouncing around.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I wish it was like it was.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Catfish Jake in the YouTube chat, Hutton, to your point
- 19:16Speaker 2: and our point on this, says if Keylon Russell or
- 19:18Speaker 2: Faison Brandon goes off this year and gets their.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Team to the playoffs, which.
- 19:22Speaker 2: We both said I think Tennessee and Alabama are fringe,
- 19:25Speaker 2: end-of-the-playoff-type teams or.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Out, I think. They're going to make a ton next season.
- 19:31Speaker 3: They're already making a ton. This is my point. He's right.
- 19:34Speaker 2: They could then renegotiate and say they could hold their
- 19:37Speaker 2: team hostage and be like, do you want another playoff
- 19:39Speaker 2: trip similar to Nico? But I hate how that's how
- 19:41Speaker 2: it operates. I want contracts to matter. There's my thesis
- 19:45Speaker 2: statement on college sports. If we're going to get to
- 19:48Speaker 2: a place where we're all okay with it, I'm fine
- 19:50Speaker 2: with the players making money. I'm fine with them making
- 19:52Speaker 2: a lot of money if everybody's making money and everybody
- 19:55Speaker 2: can pull it off at the highest level. I'm good
- 19:57Speaker 2: with that. Let's make contracts matter again. Instead of MAGA,
- 20:04Speaker 2: let's MCGA. Let's make contracts great again. And let's start
- 20:09Speaker 2: with college sports and players.
- 20:10Speaker 1: This is Huntley Withrow. We are presented by Hard Rock Bets.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Coming up, we discuss coaches on the hot seat.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Straight ahead.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Huntley Withrow here, presented by Hard Rock Bet. And we
- 20:21Speaker 1: are on Sport and State, founded by Clay Travis. Jennifer
- 20:25Speaker 1: Say founded XXXY Athletics. She's a former national champion gymnast,
- 20:30Speaker 1: former Levi's brand president. She walked away from a corporate job.
- 20:34Speaker 1: instead of saying something that she didn't believe. And she
- 20:36Speaker 1: started XXXY Athletics instead. The mission, in their words, is
- 20:39Speaker 1: to empower female athletes, take a stand for fair competition.
- 20:43Speaker 1: They call it the T that launched a movement. This
- 20:45Speaker 1: is real athletic apparel, Chad. It's not just a slogan
- 20:49Speaker 1: on a shirt. And this is where you get Clay's official,
- 20:52Speaker 1: authentic Nashville Balls gear.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Where are you, WNBA?
- 20:56Speaker 2: You're releasing statements now, all of a sudden. We need
- 20:58Speaker 2: a statement on the possibility of the Nashville Balls. We
- 21:01Speaker 2: need you to rule on this one way or the other.
- 21:03Speaker 3: That's right.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Official Nashville Balls merch, courtesy of XXXY, the official provider.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Tees, trucker hats, out now. If you want the shirt,
- 21:11Speaker 3: that's where you go to get it.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Plus, new customers get 20% off your first order when
- 21:14Speaker 2: you sign up and free shipping over $ 100.
- 21:17Speaker 3: XXXYathletics.com. That's XX-XYathletics.com. Chet, I mean, when I think of
- 21:27Speaker 3: coaches on the hot seat right now, I... I'm looking
- 21:32Speaker 3: a lot.
- 21:33Speaker 1: There's a course in the SEC. We saw a major
- 21:35Speaker 1: turnover this year. But as far as guys who have
- 21:40Speaker 1: to win, I'm immediately thinking South Carolina.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Am I stupid for thinking that?
- 21:46Speaker 1: That immediately comes to mind for me.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I think there are only two. This is very rare
- 21:52Speaker 2: for the SEC. Right now, as we start the season,
- 21:56Speaker 2: like last year, everyone knew that Billy Napier could get
- 22:00Speaker 2: fired quickly at Florida, right?
- 22:01Speaker 3: Going into it. Not just at the end of the year.
- 22:03Speaker 3: For the last two years, we were counting.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah, like this thing could go south, and it went
- 22:06Speaker 2: south in a hurry, and he got fired in a
- 22:08Speaker 2: hurry a year ago. I think there are two guys
- 22:11Speaker 2: this year in the SEC going into the season. Now,
- 22:13Speaker 2: we know Brian Kelly wasn't on the hot seat last
- 22:16Speaker 2: year going into it, right?
- 22:17Speaker 3: He was, but he wasn't. But things can change quickly.
- 22:20Speaker 3: James Franklin is a good example. Exactly.
- 22:22Speaker 2: No one had James Franklin on the hot seat. I
- 22:24Speaker 2: think there are two guys that in the SEC, and
- 22:26Speaker 2: that's it, in the SEC, I could conceivably see getting
- 22:29Speaker 2: fired either midseason or postseason this year in the SEC.
- 22:33Speaker 2: It's Shane Beamer at South Carolina. It's Jeff Levy at
- 22:37Speaker 2: Mississippi State. I don't really see anyone else on any
- 22:41Speaker 2: hot seat at all, right? Unless I'm missing something.
- 22:44Speaker 3: I don't either. There's a lot of new coaches to start.
- 22:47Speaker 3: And yeah, I just, I don't really see it.
- 22:49Speaker 2: But, Hutton, there are two guys that play this weekend,
- 22:51Speaker 2: week zero as we're calling it, this weekend that are
- 22:54Speaker 2: firmly on the hot seat. Bill Belichick in North Carolina,
- 22:57Speaker 2: who I've got to parlay for you to play at
- 22:59Speaker 2: some point too, who is a nine-and-a-half point underdog against TCU,
- 23:04Speaker 2: and I think that they're going to get blown out
- 23:06Speaker 2: in that game.
- 23:07Speaker 3: He's on the hot seat firmly.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And Mike Norvell is absolutely on the hot seat. Mike
- 23:13Speaker 2: Norvell was surprised that he came back this year. But
- 23:15Speaker 2: they play New Mexico State this weekend also. Mike Norvell
- 23:19Speaker 2: at Florida State, who had that one great year, is
- 23:23Speaker 2: 38-34 over six years. He's gotten six years at Florida State.
- 23:28Speaker 2: That's 38-34 in what has been a pretty down ACC
- 23:31Speaker 2: during his time there.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Absolutely has been. That is not going to cut it.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I'm not trying to speak this into existence, but I
- 23:41Speaker 1: can totally see Tennessee not living up to the expectation
- 23:45Speaker 1: that we're putting on them where they're a fringe playoff team.
- 23:49Speaker 1: and the fans are saying it's not Josh Heupel. I'm
- 23:54Speaker 1: not saying it's this year, but I think the talk
- 23:56Speaker 1: could happen if things go south in a hurry.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Yeah. It's going to build. It's going to build.
- 24:06Speaker 2: If someone asks, is Josh Heupel on the hot seat,
- 24:08Speaker 2: I'd say absolutely not right now. Is he always one
- 24:11Speaker 2: possible season or a half season away from the hot seat?
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yes. I mean, yes.
- 24:17Speaker 2: If Tennessee was five and seven, at the end of
- 24:19Speaker 2: this year, then he's on the hot seat next year.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Because in doing that, you didn't beat anybody, basically, is
- 24:26Speaker 2: what you're saying at the end of the year. You
- 24:27Speaker 2: didn't get one marquee win. So then he would definitely
- 24:30Speaker 2: be on the hot seat going into the following year.
- 24:32Speaker 2: But I don't have anywhere near it right now. The
- 24:35Speaker 2: other guy who was a big surprise that he got
- 24:36Speaker 2: another year is Luke Fickle, who is 17-21 at Wisconsin.
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm going through the list of possibilities hunting in Big
- 24:43Speaker 2: Ten and SEC.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I forget. I'm amazed some guys are still at their school.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Luke Fickle being one of them. You almost forget about it.
- 24:51Speaker 2: He was so bad.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Wisconsin didn't have a chance to get any... They weren't
- 24:56Speaker 1: getting any action on the coaches because there were so
- 24:58Speaker 1: many openings in the SEC.
- 24:59Speaker 3: That's how I viewed it.
- 25:01Speaker 1: His buyout's like $ 25 million, something like that, probably.
- 25:04Speaker 2: It's kind of similar to what Nebraska did with Scott Frost.
- 25:09Speaker 3: He should have been fired the year before, but they didn't.
- 25:12Speaker 2: They just restructured his contract and He kind of gave
- 25:14Speaker 2: them a hometown out in all of that because of
- 25:18Speaker 2: how he did it.
- 25:18Speaker 1: The buyouts were insane.
- 25:22Speaker 2: It's crazy to me because it's not just the record, too.
- 25:25Speaker 2: There's a lot of negative press around that program.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Of guys complaining about the culture and a lot of
- 25:32Speaker 2: different things.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And then you've got Lincoln Riley. Of how he's treated people.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Lincoln Riley's buyout is like $ 60, $ 70 million. Yes, absolutely.
- 25:42Speaker 3: crazy um hey by.
- 25:43Speaker 2: The way was speaking of wisconsin hutton though before that
- 25:47Speaker 2: and i'll get to my parlay too um wisconsin opens
- 25:51Speaker 2: the season against notre dame keep that in mind that's
- 25:53Speaker 2: on sunday of labor day weekend uh they're going to
- 25:56Speaker 2: play notre dame out of the gate so that's that's
- 25:58Speaker 2: one to watch i think that game's at lambeau field are.
- 26:01Speaker 3: You dialing it up are you saying what 100 asked
- 26:03Speaker 3: on that I would be surprised if.
- 26:07Speaker 2: That was a really good game, yes. I think Notre
- 26:09Speaker 2: Dame's going to handle that one with ease. I also
- 26:11Speaker 2: think that TCU is going to handle North Carolina with ease.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Here's my week zero parlay with hard rock bet. I've
- 26:18Speaker 3: got the pencil. I'm writing it down right now.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Give me TCU minus 9.5. There are teaser options at
- 26:24Speaker 2: hard rock bet. If you'd like to tease that down
- 26:26Speaker 2: a little bit, I would say take that juice, take
- 26:29Speaker 2: that action, go down a little bit on it. But
- 26:30Speaker 2: TCU minus 9.5, I think they beat North Carolina by
- 26:33Speaker 2: double digits. I like UNLV. I like their two quarterback options.
- 26:37Speaker 2: I like Dan Mullen. I don't love Memphis breaking in
- 26:40Speaker 2: a new coach. Dan Mullen now in year two at UNLV.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Give me the running Rebs, minus three and a half
- 26:46Speaker 2: at home against Memphis.
- 26:48Speaker 3: And the Wahoos, baby.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Virginia is minus three and a half at hard rock
- 26:52Speaker 2: bet against NC State. I'm never much of a believer
- 26:55Speaker 2: in Dave Dorn and NC State.
- 26:57Speaker 3: I'm not this year. Virginia coming off a great year.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Give me Tony Elliott in Virginia, minus three and a
- 27:03Speaker 2: half at home That's the 2.30 ESPN game tomorrow afternoon.
- 27:10Speaker 2: TCU minus 9.5, UNLV minus 3.5, UVA minus 3.5. I
- 27:15Speaker 2: went with two home favorites there, Hutton, and we're going
- 27:18Speaker 2: TCU on the neutral site in Dublin, Ireland.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Let's show the injury report for this game. There are
- 27:24Speaker 1: officially 15 players ruled out for Virginia. I mean, look
- 27:29Speaker 1: at this. Look at this list. The initial report earlier
- 27:34Speaker 1: in the week looked like this. There's a handful of
- 27:39Speaker 1: names that are not present on Virginia's list right now,
- 27:43Speaker 1: but there are 15 players already ruled out. I don't
- 27:45Speaker 1: know what is going on in their camp, but at
- 27:48Speaker 1: some point you just break camp and you say, hey,
- 27:50Speaker 1: let's just wait until the season if you have this
- 27:52Speaker 1: many injuries.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I mean, there's so many of them, it looks like
- 27:54Speaker 2: they just employ people on the back end of the
- 27:57Speaker 2: 105 roster. to be coaches, and they just list them
- 28:00Speaker 2: as out even though they're not physically able to play football.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Those are actually just offensive and defensive analysts that are
- 28:05Speaker 2: listed as out for Virginia. I don't know how you
- 28:08Speaker 2: could have that many injuries already and then be on
- 28:12Speaker 2: the roster still. I feel like these are all guys
- 28:15Speaker 2: who have just graduated onto coaching at this point at Virginia.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Yeah, they're the graduate assistant. Imagine being in college right now, dude,
- 28:24Speaker 1: and you're already graduated. You have no class. and you
- 28:28Speaker 1: just get to go play a football season, and then
- 28:30Speaker 1: you're graduating. How awesome would that be? Zero to do.
- 28:34Speaker 1: You've already graduated. Now you just get to play your
- 28:37Speaker 1: final season.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Again, I don't know what the workload's like for guys
- 28:42Speaker 2: even before they graduate. They also graduate so quickly. I
- 28:48Speaker 2: was at my daughter's school board meeting the other night.
- 28:49Speaker 2: The headmaster of the school was going through different statistics,
- 28:53Speaker 2: and the average at this school that my daughter goes to,
- 28:56Speaker 2: Donaldson Christian Academy, their seniors go to college with at
- 29:00Speaker 2: least 15 hours of college credit based on AP courses
- 29:03Speaker 2: they take at the school that my daughter goes to.
- 29:06Speaker 2: And I'm thinking, that's a semester in. So you're a
- 29:09Speaker 2: semester in when you start. If you go off to
- 29:11Speaker 2: summer school to start college, you're done with a year,
- 29:15Speaker 2: year and a half of school already.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I mean, everybody's graduating in three years now. If you're
- 29:19Speaker 1: an athlete, you're done in three years. I realize that
- 29:22Speaker 1: there's a cost deal here. Like you want to speed
- 29:25Speaker 1: things up for the cost of college.
- 29:27Speaker 3: I get it.
- 29:27Speaker 1: But man, if I'm the student, if I'm the kid,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I do not want to speed up my college experience at.
- 29:34Speaker 2: All.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Yes, you're right. Yes. But I mean, imagine reducing your
- 29:37Speaker 3: college years.
- 29:40Speaker 2: At school right now, but I don't want her to
- 29:41Speaker 2: hear that because that would absolutely be my advice to
- 29:44Speaker 2: anyone else is savor the college experience.
- 29:46Speaker 3: You don't have to be in a rush.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I had a buddy who went off to summer school
- 29:49Speaker 2: because he just wanted to get done with college so quick.
- 29:52Speaker 3: And he was done in like.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Two and a half or three years, you know, staying
- 29:55Speaker 2: for summers the whole time. And I'm thinking I'd That
- 29:57Speaker 2: is not the college experience that I would want. But
- 30:01Speaker 2: kids these days, man, there's a lot of, like, I
- 30:04Speaker 2: saw a buddy sent me a text of a highlight package,
- 30:07Speaker 2: because we're doing high school football now, of his kid
- 30:10Speaker 2: in high school playing, I think, at NBA. He has
- 30:12Speaker 2: a 5.5 GPA. And I'm thinking, how is that possible?
- 30:16Speaker 2: So everything he takes is AP, so it goes up to, like,
- 30:18Speaker 2: a possible 6.0 scale. Like, there's a competitive aspect to
- 30:24Speaker 2: the grade point average.
- 30:25Speaker 3: I get all that. Like, whatever. I remember being in college.
- 30:29Speaker 3: There was like a 12-year-old who was like a college.
- 30:32Speaker 3: He was like, you know. You went to school with
- 30:34Speaker 3: Doogie Howser? I didn't know Doogie Howser was from McMinnville.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I remember thinking like, that kid's going to be miserable, man.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Like he's graduating at 14. He's just going to be
- 30:44Speaker 1: a college grad.
- 30:45Speaker 3: And then what? You know, like.
- 30:48Speaker 2: And also, you were doing harm to your child, like
- 30:51Speaker 2: making them have to socialize. when they're 12 or 13
- 30:54Speaker 2: in high school, if they're like bumping them up so much.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I mean, that's, that's not right for the kid.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But I'm thinking like, he's on college campus taking college
- 31:01Speaker 1: courses at 12 years old. I'm thinking, I mean, I, okay.
- 31:04Speaker 1: He wants to be, no one can challenge him, I guess,
- 31:06Speaker 1: but I'm thinking, what does he do when he graduates
- 31:09Speaker 1: at 14?
- 31:10Speaker 3: Nothing. You know, like, does he go to medical school?
- 31:14Speaker 2: He goes to the all skate bowling alley. I mean,
- 31:17Speaker 2: he's going to, he's going to grad school. He's going
- 31:18Speaker 2: to get that PhD by the time he's 18, by
- 31:20Speaker 2: the time.
- 31:21Speaker 3: He's an adult. By the time he can vote, he's
- 31:23Speaker 3: going to have his PhD. He's a 19-year-old dentist by
- 31:26Speaker 3: the end of it? Yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 2: School is very– we say all this stuff. We know
- 31:30Speaker 2: that school is very different. College is very different now.
- 31:33Speaker 2: But these college football players, like I just don't– you
- 31:36Speaker 2: don't get like the college game day feature on a
- 31:39Speaker 2: guy who's got a difficult major who like has to
- 31:43Speaker 2: run from the lab.
- 31:44Speaker 3: To get to practice on time anymore like you did
- 31:47Speaker 3: back in the day. I'm with you. They all feel
- 31:48Speaker 3: the same.
- 31:49Speaker 2: And I'm not saying they're not smart. I'm not saying
- 31:51Speaker 2: they're not taking classes online or any of that. I'm
- 31:53Speaker 2: just saying it's not as big of a deal as
- 31:57Speaker 2: it was before.
- 31:59Speaker 1: That brings up a good point. Vanderbilt, when we were
- 32:01Speaker 1: interviewing some of the players and they were telling us
- 32:03Speaker 1: their major, it was refreshing to actually hear a major,
- 32:06Speaker 1: you know, like a difficult major.
- 32:10Speaker 2: It was refreshing to hear the Vandy players say they
- 32:13Speaker 2: have to go to physical classrooms.
- 32:15Speaker 3: They don't do as many online courses.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Great.
- 32:17Speaker 3: That's awesome. You get to experience college. Congrats. The way
- 32:20Speaker 3: the rest of us did. As it should be. Coming up.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Titans and Bears preseason game. We'll briefly discuss Cam Ward
- 32:29Speaker 1: and expectations and what we haven't seen. We'll let you
- 32:33Speaker 1: know what both of us and Clay, what we binge
- 32:37Speaker 1: watched on the drive back from Birmingham and how awesome
- 32:40Speaker 1: it was.
- 32:42Speaker 3: And high school football. Friday Night Lights. Chad with a
- 32:45Speaker 3: challenge for those viewing this morning. Sutton and Withrow.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Chad, the NFL preseason nearly over as we all know.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Say hallelujah. If you're watching preseason tonight, don't.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Don't. Go to a high school football game, says Chad Withrow.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Go to a high school football game.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I'm actually texting with a high school football coach right now.
- 33:10Speaker 2: And this is terrific. He's sending me some info on
- 33:13Speaker 2: the game. Josh Crouch at Green Hill High School. Thank
- 33:16Speaker 2: you for that. Much appreciated for the two deep that
- 33:19Speaker 2: he's texting me as we speak. We got a call
- 33:22Speaker 2: of Green Hill at Page tonight. We're excited about that
- 33:24Speaker 2: in the mid-state. Here's my challenge to everyone watching this
- 33:27Speaker 2: right now, because not enough people do this anymore. Go
- 33:29Speaker 2: to a high school football game. I had this conversation
- 33:32Speaker 2: with some people last night at the event with Next
- 33:33Speaker 2: Round Live that we grew up with high school sporting
- 33:37Speaker 2: events where there was always like three or four older couples.
- 33:41Speaker 2: that had season tickets, that went to every town sporting
- 33:44Speaker 2: event just because it was what they wanted to do on.
- 33:46Speaker 3: A Friday night. It was their pro sports.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And you would go and greet them after the game
- 33:50Speaker 2: if you were a player, and it was awesome. And
- 33:52Speaker 2: I look back at that now, and I'm like, you
- 33:53Speaker 2: don't see as much of that going on. We were
- 33:55Speaker 2: at Smyrna last week. I was in Smyrna High School
- 33:57Speaker 2: here in the Mid-State, and they had a PA announcer
- 34:00Speaker 2: who's been doing the game since 1992. He remembered calling
- 34:04Speaker 2: me in high school playing basketball against Smyrna when he was.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Five, six years into the job.
- 34:09Speaker 2: As the high school PA announcer, you don't get that
- 34:13Speaker 2: level of commitment as much anymore. Start that trend back.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Let's be big about our community. Wherever you live, go
- 34:19Speaker 2: to the local high school. It could be the local
- 34:20Speaker 2: private school. It could be the local public school.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Don't care.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Spend your Friday night going to a high school football game.
- 34:27Speaker 2: You're going to feel good about it. It's you giving
- 34:29Speaker 2: back when you spend that money to go into the gate.
- 34:31Speaker 2: That's helping the programs, helping the schools. Also, it gets
- 34:35Speaker 2: it wets the appetite for football starting tomorrow with college
- 34:38Speaker 2: football games. You can watch big college football weekend next
- 34:41Speaker 2: week weekend kicking off the season. This is a good
- 34:43Speaker 2: way to get into it right off the bat. Go
- 34:46Speaker 2: to a high school football game tonight.
- 34:47Speaker 3: I beg you.
- 34:48Speaker 2: That is my challenge to everyone. Hit us up in
- 34:50Speaker 2: the YouTube chat. Let me know what game you're going to.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I know our YouTube chat and they're going to at
- 34:55Speaker 2: least try to go to a game. So let us
- 34:57Speaker 2: know what game you're going to tonight.
- 34:58Speaker 3: And tag along with us.
- 35:00Speaker 1: We're going to be on at UCR Midstate is the
- 35:04Speaker 1: YouTube channel, Chad. I've got that right this week. I
- 35:09Speaker 1: say that because tonight I am going to throw in
- 35:13Speaker 1: a going for the bundle. You better believe it. I
- 35:15Speaker 1: didn't work it in last week. We're going for the
- 35:17Speaker 1: bundle tonight on the broadcast in honor of Mark Howard.
- 35:22Speaker 1: You hit it last week one time, Hutton. My wife
- 35:26Speaker 1: actually tuned in the last five minutes of our game.
- 35:28Speaker 1: And she said, I tuned in just in time to
- 35:30Speaker 1: hear Hutton say, going for the bundle.
- 35:31Speaker 3: I don't even remember saying it. At one point. I'm
- 35:33Speaker 3: glad I did. It was such a great play. I
- 35:35Speaker 3: think we blacked out in the moment. Didn't even know
- 35:37Speaker 3: you were doing it. But you did say, yes, going
- 35:40Speaker 3: for the bundle. Yeah.
- 35:42Speaker 1: We're also, did you see, we're going to be sitting
- 35:44Speaker 1: outside the press box tonight. We are going to be
- 35:47Speaker 1: with the public. We are in the visitor bleachers tonight.
- 35:50Speaker 1: We are going to annoy the fans.
- 35:53Speaker 3: Never done that before. Should we whisper like we're at
- 35:56Speaker 3: a golf tournament? You know me. It's hard for me
- 35:59Speaker 3: to do that. It's hard for me, too. Neither one
- 36:01Speaker 3: of us have been accused of being quiet. with our voices.
- 36:04Speaker 3: So that's going to be tough. I'm also anticipating your
- 36:08Speaker 3: parents turning around, looking at it strange because you mispronounced
- 36:11Speaker 3: a name. Or a pronunciation. Or say something like, hey,
- 36:13Speaker 3: he's a junior, actually. He's a junior. There's going to
- 36:15Speaker 3: be people saying that. We're like, oh, okay. You completed
- 36:18Speaker 3: eight passes last week, not seven.
- 36:20Speaker 2: This is going to be Ella, who does our sideline reporting,
- 36:24Speaker 2: our producer there.
- 36:25Speaker 3: This is going to be a good lesson with them.
- 36:27Speaker 3: of keep these people off of us. Yes. They've got
- 36:30Speaker 3: to serve as the buffer.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Also, feel free to tell them we're on air if
- 36:34Speaker 2: they're going to come up and try to talk to
- 36:36Speaker 2: us while we're doing the game with a headset on.
- 36:38Speaker 2: So feel free to do whatever you need during this game.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Hey, it's fun. In all seriousness, it was great being
- 36:44Speaker 3: around the atmosphere of high school football last Friday. It
- 36:46Speaker 3: was great last week.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree.
- 36:47Speaker 3: We're excited to call the game tonight with UCR.
- 36:50Speaker 2: But again, I just implore everybody watching, anybody listening to
- 36:54Speaker 2: the podcast right now, maybe you're listening– and it's late
- 36:56Speaker 2: afternoon on a Friday and you don't have any plans tonight,
- 37:00Speaker 2: get your ass to a high school football game. That's
- 37:03Speaker 2: what I'm telling you to do.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Do it.
- 37:04Speaker 2: You're not going to feel bad about it. You're going
- 37:06Speaker 2: to leave feeling great. It's a little slice of Americana.
- 37:09Speaker 2: You're helping out your local school, helping out your alma mater.
- 37:12Speaker 2: If you live close to your alma mater, just go
- 37:14Speaker 2: do it.
- 37:16Speaker 1: And another thing you should do is binge tires like
- 37:19Speaker 1: we did last night on the drive back from Birmingham.
- 37:23Speaker 1: How many episodes did we get in? So we were
- 37:26Speaker 1: all a little bit tired, a little bit grumpy. We
- 37:29Speaker 1: had a quick trip down. We were there for about
- 37:31Speaker 1: 90 minutes, two hours at the event. Got back in
- 37:34Speaker 1: our car, riding back. Had a nice big TV in
- 37:36Speaker 1: front of us. And I said, Braves just won. Feeling
- 37:39Speaker 1: good about that. You know what I'm going to do?
- 37:40Speaker 2: I'm going to fire up season three of Tires because
- 37:42Speaker 2: I talked about it on the show, how it's the
- 37:44Speaker 2: funniest thing on.
- 37:45Speaker 3: TV right now. It was great, man.
- 37:46Speaker 2: And sure enough, you and Clay both had not seen
- 37:49Speaker 2: that season. Clay had never seen a second of the show.
- 37:52Speaker 2: But it's hard to get Clay locked in. on anything
- 37:55Speaker 2: and away from his phone for a while because he's
- 37:57Speaker 2: very busy on that phone. But he did, he put
- 38:00Speaker 2: the phone down and he watched and he was cracking
- 38:02Speaker 2: up the whole time. Tire season three delivers catfish shakes
- 38:06Speaker 2: in the YouTube chat. I know he's a big fan also,
- 38:08Speaker 2: but we got into episode seven of a 12 episode season.
- 38:12Speaker 3: So that's how quickly that thing rolls.
- 38:15Speaker 1: It's like Veep, right? Like it's a 30 minute show.
- 38:17Speaker 1: It's perfect time. Uh, I like it because it feels
- 38:21Speaker 1: a lot like eastbound and down and, uh, Righteous Gemstones
- 38:27Speaker 1: a bit. You can tell the writers are really good friends.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I don't know how much of the show is ad-lib,
- 38:34Speaker 1: but it does feel like a little bit is. I
- 38:37Speaker 1: don't know how those dudes get through an episode without
- 38:40Speaker 1: just cracking up and actually delivering the lines.
- 38:43Speaker 3: I don't know. I would have a really difficult time
- 38:45Speaker 3: doing it.
- 38:46Speaker 2: They're very good. I just like when someone's allowed to
- 38:50Speaker 2: create their own world. And it's so clear that Netflix
- 38:53Speaker 2: is just giving them the freedom. But, hey, this is
- 38:54Speaker 2: like a sketch you guys wrote back in college or
- 38:57Speaker 2: right out of college. Like, just go ahead and do
- 38:58Speaker 2: that show. And there has to be a lot more
- 39:00Speaker 2: structure with it. And it's well produced. Like, it's not
- 39:04Speaker 2: some knockoff. You know, they have different set pieces. We
- 39:07Speaker 2: watched the women's business event, which I love the episode,
- 39:10Speaker 2: where they get out of the tire place and they
- 39:12Speaker 2: go to a women in business dinner.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Which is fantastic. It's really well done.
- 39:20Speaker 2: I think anytime funny people are around other funny people
- 39:24Speaker 2: and they know each other and they know the backhand
- 39:26Speaker 2: and the shorthand of everything they're doing comedically. and you
- 39:30Speaker 2: allow them to create, you get some really good stuff.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I feel that way about Tim Robinson and the sketch
- 39:36Speaker 2: show and now the chair company. It feels so worn
- 39:41Speaker 2: out and lived in. I feel like I'm in Valley
- 39:44Speaker 2: Forge Automotive now.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Tire shop.
- 39:46Speaker 2: It doesn't feel like actors being in Valley. These feel
- 39:49Speaker 2: like actual people at Valley Forge automotive that you would encounter.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Uh, by the way, Chad, this entire show, my chair
- 39:56Speaker 1: slowly goes down during this segment.
- 40:00Speaker 3: I can't, I can't keep it.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Uh, do you remember our old gig in the studio
- 40:04Speaker 2: where like my mic would slowly just drop?
- 40:07Speaker 3: I'm not touching it. And they're like, you've done something
- 40:10Speaker 3: to it.
- 40:10Speaker 2: And I'm like, it was like, uh, I'm watching Lioness,
- 40:13Speaker 2: and she's getting Chinese water torture done to her, slowly,
- 40:17Speaker 2: over and over, and I'm actually watching it on screen.
- 40:19Speaker 2: That's what I felt like with my mic. It was
- 40:21Speaker 2: a psychological experiment. I'm like, this mic is two centimeters
- 40:26Speaker 2: lower than it was 30 minutes ago, and I have
- 40:28Speaker 2: not touched a thing.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I don't know what's up with this. It slowly just drops.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Final thought real quick. Titans-Bears in the preseason. I feel
- 40:38Speaker 1: like Cam Ward's feeling a little bit of the heat
- 40:40Speaker 1: right now, a little pressure. And he's 0-2 in terms
- 40:46Speaker 1: of wowing anything, wowing anyone in preseason games. It's time
- 40:51Speaker 1: for him to.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Put up some drives.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I'm not talking about a field goal drive. Oh, we
- 40:58Speaker 1: went down and got points. No, no, no, no, no.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I want to see him push the ball down the field.
- 41:06Speaker 1: The run game can do whatever. I want to see
- 41:09Speaker 1: him and Dable play. being locked up going into the
- 41:12Speaker 1: regular season. We have not seen that yet. He needs
- 41:14Speaker 1: to show it.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Well, and I heard him answering questions from Jared Stillman
- 41:19Speaker 2: at the press conference yesterday.
- 41:21Speaker 3: And he's kind.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Of making it like, well, I look better in practice
- 41:24Speaker 2: because we're doing more in practice. So we're putting more
- 41:27Speaker 2: plan into it and practices. So that's better than the games.
- 41:30Speaker 2: And I'm thinking that that's, it's a load of crap
- 41:33Speaker 2: when you're talking about playing against backups. Like you're out
- 41:36Speaker 2: there to play, even if you're playing the most generic
- 41:38Speaker 2: play as possible in a game, like, We were watching
- 41:41Speaker 2: NFL Live on the drive up yesterday, and Chase Daniel
- 41:44Speaker 2: was showing how he's just not seeing things from a
- 41:47Speaker 2: vision standpoint. Here's a play where a guy's wide open
- 41:50Speaker 2: to start the 49ers game, and he's sensing pressure that
- 41:53Speaker 2: wasn't really there. He's stepping up in the pocket for
- 41:55Speaker 2: no reason, and then he's missing the guy who's wide open.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I don't want to hear the excuses from Cam Ward.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Go out and play better.
- 42:03Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 42:05Speaker 2: He needs to feel that pressure, honestly. I want to
- 42:07Speaker 2: see a driven... pressure-filled Cam Ward go out and do
- 42:11Speaker 2: something better, even if it's just a preseason game.
- 42:15Speaker 1: It's time to see Cardinal Tate, the defensive line. There
- 42:17Speaker 1: are a lot of things that the Titans need to
- 42:19Speaker 1: show before they go into a must-win game against the
- 42:22Speaker 1: New York Jets. Hey, fun week here at Sporting State
- 42:25Speaker 1: for Hudney Withrow. Stay tuned because next round live coming
- 42:29Speaker 1: your way right now here at Sporting State.
