- 0:54organization or institution, does not wish to engage in any
- 0:58controversy, either endorses or oppose any causes.
- 1:03Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other Alcoholics
- 1:07are chief sobriety. My mum and my dad and my mum
- 1:10lived in the my dad worked there, but my mum and dad lived
- 1:14in the caravan. But he had beer so I'll go and
- 1:18visit him and but once, once a month just get paid and then I'd
- 1:25head up to Broome and and just wipe myself off for the weekend
- 1:30and don't remember anything like that.
- 1:32But anyway, after I left the main road I started travelling
- 1:37and went to Darwin and trouble followed me wherever I went and
- 1:43I met this young lady. We got on real well and but I
- 1:49didn't know until about 6 months later but her boyfriend was a
- 1:54bikie and he was up in Berrimo jail up in Darwin and he was
- 1:59just about to get released. So I left Darwin and went went
- 2:04to Catherine and I I left there real quick.
- 2:08So anyway, so normal things going on and I, this female
- 2:16major fight was getting sick of me seeing me every Monday
- 2:20morning. So I'll probably spend the
- 2:21weekend in the cells and then go to court for drink, drinking and
- 2:26fighting in the pub. And she said you got 2 choices,
- 2:30you can go up to Barrow my doll, which I didn't want to go do
- 2:34because there was a certain gentleman there was going to
- 2:36kill me. So I said yeah, we'll go to a A.
- 2:39So that was on the Monday. On the Wednesday night was a, a
- 2:42meeting. So we went there and there was
- 2:44six of us in the meeting and I went there was four of us left
- 2:48the meeting and went to the pub. Fuck this AAS for me, this AAS
- 2:53for me. So anyway, went to the pub for
- 2:57the next few weeks and when the coppers got sick of me and so
- 3:02they grabbed me my swag and and dropped me off about 200 KS S
- 3:09just dropped me off Mimi swag. And there's this place called
- 3:14Mataranka and they've got a pub there and we've got hot Hot
- 3:18Springs and I've got a job as a yardman there.
- 3:22But I wasn't getting paid, I was just getting paid in drinks.
- 3:26So I am anyway, they got sick of me there so they took me in the
- 3:32swag out to the road. So anyway, I'm sitting there on
- 3:35the side Rd. this van pulled up this campervan thing and they
- 3:40said where you going? Said oh that way.
- 3:43And so we went that way and ended up in Alice Springs and I
- 3:49was telling this guy I had no money so he'd buy me food and
- 3:52all that and stuff like at the roadhouses and, and we got to
- 3:59Alice Springs and he said to Salvation Army had three days
- 4:04free accommodation. So he dropped me off at the
- 4:06Salvos and took off. So I spent there and when the
- 4:10next morning I got up, went to breakfast and there's this bloke
- 4:14in a Salvation Army uniform, He was the captain of the Salvation
- 4:18Army and I was effing and seeing all the way and, you know,
- 4:22talking about me drinking and all that.
- 4:24And so he'd give me some money. No, he bought me a ticket and
- 4:29put me on a train. Now I didn't know which way the
- 4:31train was going, you know, whether it was going back up to
- 4:34Darwin or come on here. So anyway I got on this train
- 4:38and my band up here and there was this big Scottish bastard
- 4:42waiting for me at the train station and a few people might
- 4:47know him but anyway he mainly in the other fellowship but he said
- 4:54he going lowering his bastards know my name.
- 4:57So anyways he took me and then he gave that three days free
- 5:01accommodation again at Subway. So I went there and I didn't
- 5:07drink, but I used some speed of scored some speed at the pub.
- 5:12And so it was on my third day this happened.
- 5:17And I knew I couldn't get in because it was after 8:00.
- 5:21No, it's after six if you were there.
- 5:23Yeah. So I tried to get in the sober
- 5:25and art unit, and this camera wasn't going to let me in there.
- 5:30So I told the camera exactly what I was going to do to it if
- 5:33they didn't let me in. And the door opened and this big
- 5:37Scottish person, I was going to swear that, but this big
- 5:41Scottish person answered it and I started pointing and telling
- 5:46him exactly what I was going to do to him.
- 5:48So he beat the living shit out. He beat me up anyway.
- 5:52And it's a bit hard. There's not swearing stuff.
- 5:55But anyway, he looked. But anyway, anyway, he put me in
- 6:00the bed. He put me in the bed.
- 6:01Next day they took me to Warren Ella.
- 6:04Now I don't know if it's still there or not Warren Ella, this
- 6:07is 32 years ago. And now they've got this thing
- 6:10called Dasher or something nowadays.
- 6:13But so I went to this Woronel place and I was quite happy
- 6:18there because I was giving me pills to keep me, you know.
- 6:23All right, you know, so and then about yeah, Valium and all that
- 6:28sort of stuff. But anyway, I I stayed there for
- 6:32a week and then this person came down from this hotel up on the
- 6:37hills and and she was talking about this place and she said,
- 6:42would you be interested in going?
- 6:44I said, yeah. So I was under the impression it
- 6:47was a farm I was going to though.
- 6:50I spent another few days there and she came and picked me up,
- 6:53took me up there. Now I got up there, there's no
- 6:56sheep and no tractors, just a bunch of druggies and alkies
- 7:01doing what they do. So I said, oh, no, this isn't
- 7:04for me. But there's one buckle.
- 7:07It's different now. There's more buses, but there's
- 7:10one bus a week and it wasn't on that day, so I had to stay there
- 7:14for four days. So anyway, so I was quite happy
- 7:18after that because I was getting fed, I was sleeping well and,
- 7:22and no one was bothering me and I had to listen to all this a a
- 7:27crap and all that, you know, but I'm going, yeah, right.
- 7:31So anyway, I fell in love and I fell in love.
- 7:35Well I thought we both fell in love but I, I think, I think it
- 7:39was all on my side Anyway so we got asked to leave.
- 7:43So we're left. So they took us down to Meadows.
- 7:48We were taking a bus to the city but when we got there there was
- 7:51this bloke waiting for us. Now I didn't know but that was
- 7:55her boyfriend. So we went back to his place.
- 7:59So me and can't remember a name but me and her.
- 8:03Oh, my dude, 32 years ago, you know, and I've had a brain
- 8:07injury since then, but same way I we're still doing the business
- 8:13and and I think she was doing with them, but I don't know.
- 8:18But anyway, they started using drugs again.
- 8:21So I left and I went back to this bar, another place, went
- 8:24back up to the hotel up in the hills and done the program left
- 8:29there. Now it's different.
- 8:32These are they got halfway houses and all that, that you
- 8:35can go. But then once you left there,
- 8:38that was it. He got on the bus and that was
- 8:40it. So I went back to the subways
- 8:44and this big Scottish person, he ended up being my sponsor, but
- 8:49nevermind. But sort of sponsor is my
- 8:54sponsor for about 3 weeks. I but anyway, so he said we got
- 8:58this thing called the bridge program.
- 9:00I said right, I don't have to do meetings.
- 9:03He said no, but you got to go to church on Sunday.
- 9:06Yeah, Ronan, just for bed, you know, I said yeah, righto.
- 9:11So just go to church on a Sunday.
- 9:13Now, the Selvo churches are funny, but down there they got
- 9:17this thing called the Mercy Seat and stuff like that.
- 9:20But all those who were in the rehab, the bridge program used
- 9:26to sit right up the back and giggle at all these people.
- 9:30But yeah, but like we went to the subway to call their son
- 9:36Farm up near Mount Barker. So I went up there and I just, I
- 9:41just said to this guy, yeah, this Jesus fella, you know, you
- 9:45were talking about. So we spoke about him.
- 9:47Anyway, I give myself to I became the Christian.
- 9:51So I left there and and then days there was 3 lots of units
- 9:57in Elizabeth. There's only two left but and
- 10:02sort of woke up units, you know, and so I applied for the the
- 10:08Housing Trust to get on. So I think, well, I've got a lot
- 10:11of saying I've been accepted. But so I went up there.
- 10:14Now the Salways, I've got this big warehouse full of furniture
- 10:18and so I've got a real nice couch, couple of nice beds, TV,
- 10:24big TV and I was quite happy. So about 3 weeks later was a
- 10:29knock on my door and it was just big Scottish bastard again.
- 10:33And he said I was, it's a meeting and salt for you on
- 10:37Wednesday. Yeah, it's a Wednesday.
- 10:39The meeting, the last time I saw to me, I said yeah.
- 10:43He said come, we'll go. I said, yeah, Rodder.
- 10:46So we went and walked in. This bloke saw saw me and said,
- 10:51how you going, Larry? I said these, these people know
- 10:54my name. And I thought, yeah, all right,
- 10:57how you going? He said Snowy.
- 11:00I said, Oh yeah, Rodder, But he'd come up to the hotel up on
- 11:05the hills and and done a spiel. So he remembered me.
- 11:12So anyway, so I was sharing at that meeting and he said to me,
- 11:18right, I'll be your sponsor. Now.
- 11:21I never asked him to be my sponsor.
- 11:23Now, I thought sponsors could have asked you, but that's not
- 11:26what happened. Snowy said to me, I'll be your
- 11:29sponsor now. Here's my sponsor for over 25
- 11:33years. And in that time, he never, ever
- 11:36asked me to do anything. He would do a lot of suggesting,
- 11:40but quite forcefully. I'm like that.
- 11:42But yeah, yeah, I'll be at home, you know, and I'll be upsetting
- 11:48my wife or doing something anyway.
- 11:50And my wife would give me the phone.
- 11:53It'd be snowy. Go.
- 11:54Hi. Hello.
- 11:55I think you're supposed to come and see him.
- 11:57I said, yeah, righto. So I'll go and see him.
- 12:00So in the end, I said to, I said to him, I said, now you're
- 12:04supposed to be telling me what to do.
- 12:07He said, no, no, I'm supposed to tell you when you're doing it
- 12:12wrong. And from what I can gather,
- 12:14you're doing it real wrong. So anyway, that was it.
- 12:18So anyway, now a bit friendly. I was looking in the paper.
- 12:22I said I had to have a job. I was looking in the paper and I
- 12:26saw this advertisement for Bible College of SA.
- 12:31It's just down right actually. But so I thought, Oh yeah.
- 12:35So I spoke to my minister. I flew the snowy and Mensa.
- 12:39So he said well, you can try. So we tried and I got accepted.
- 12:44So I went to Bible college. Now I lived there because I
- 12:49couldn't afford to pay my rent at the flat and pay the Bible
- 12:54college fees and all that. Mind you, the church paid most
- 12:57of the fees anyway. But anyway, and in the at that
- 13:01same time I was seeing this young lady, that's another thing
- 13:06I've got a resentment about with Snowy.
- 13:09Snowy introduced me to my wife. Now we've come out for 29 years,
- 13:14so something's right there. Anyway, so anyway, so I said she
- 13:18can live in the flat by the while I go to Yeah, don't wait.
- 13:22So I went to college and I was going to church every Sunday.
- 13:27Yeah, or church most of the days.
- 13:29But going back to Elizabeth on a Sunday, going to church, saying
- 13:34hello to my now wife, but she wasn't then.
- 13:37But and so, but anyway, so I decided to, I got out of there
- 13:44with a degree of church history. So I can tell you about church.
- 13:49Well, I used to, but before I had this brain accident.
- 13:53Yeah. But anyway, somewhere I left
- 13:56there, we got married, me and my wife, and moved to Smithfield.
- 14:02And then I had a bad car accident in 2012 and, and I died
- 14:10and the car that was right behind me was a paramedic from
- 14:14the Raffles. So he done his CPR thing on me
- 14:18and then the ambulance took me into hospital.
- 14:21I woke up in hospital. I said, Oh yeah, where am I?
- 14:24I said, well, Adelaide, Royal Adelaide Hospital, I said how
- 14:28long I've been here? Three months.
- 14:30I said, oh, and so all right, about 6 on my flight, I got out
- 14:36of the hospital, I went into this place called Hampstead for
- 14:39people who have brain injury because I were dead for so long
- 14:42that Oh my God, I had a brain injury before I had the actually
- 14:45anyway, thought they'd tell me what are you laughing at?
- 14:49But anyway, but my wife was getting sick of me and she saw
- 14:55Snowy and they've seen sitting down having a cup of coffee and
- 15:00Mara Para shopping Centre and said it's Snowy or F sake take
- 15:05him to a meeting before killing. That was in 2012, near the end
- 15:10of 2012. And I've been doing meetings
- 15:15from both fellowships 5-6 days a week since then.
- 15:19And I love the fellowship done wrong.
- 15:22I don't necessarily get on with everybody and not everyone gets
- 15:26on with me. That's all right, that's it and
- 15:28shit. But I, I do.
- 15:31I love the fellowship and I love especially love coming here.
- 15:35And so we go out for a really good meal before we come here
- 15:40and, and it's good. But apart from that, I do IA.
- 15:47People say IA saved their lives, and for me it was a case of IA
- 15:54saved all other people's lives because I was a very, very bad
- 15:58drunk driver and I was very aggressive drunk.
- 16:04I came to my first meeting. I came to after I got out of
- 16:08hospital and Snowy took me to Brooklyn Beginners.
- 16:12And I met Eddie and Arthur and a few other people, you know, And
- 16:17I now he said to me, listen to these guys.
- 16:22And I do. I listen to them.
- 16:23I don't necessarily agree with everything they say, but that's
- 16:27me. Yeah.
- 16:28But I do. I listen and I do I, I speak to
- 16:33Snowy once a month because I go up to Hampstead Brain True Place
- 16:40on Hampstead Road and on the way back I call into the cemetery.
- 16:45I'll sit there and have me chat to Snowy and then I rant and
- 16:48rave this and stuff like who's giving me a hard time or not?
- 16:54Who's giving me who I think's giving me a hard time.
- 16:56And I thought this group, I don't like that.
- 17:00And and these little old lady is wandering around.
- 17:03I think I'm a nut, but I'm yelling at this fucking plaque,
- 17:07you know? But anyway.
- 17:08But when I get out, I I feel a lot better.
- 17:11It's the same as the meeting. I always feel better after a
- 17:14meeting. And the same when I used to see
- 17:16Snowy. Always felt better once I left
- 17:19his face. Yeah.
- 17:21Like. And congratulations to you,
- 17:24Eddie. I know it's your birthday.
- 17:26Yes, I Well done, mate. I'll leave it there.
- 17:28Thank you. Good on.
