- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I know the World Cup is going on, but baseball
- 0:07Speaker 1: is sizzling right now. We've got a ton of things
- 0:09Speaker 1: that are really interesting in play, starting with some very
- 0:14Speaker 1: intriguing series this week. Guardians at White Sox. Who would
- 0:18Speaker 1: have thought this one would be intriguing, but it's for
- 0:20Speaker 1: first place in the Ale Central. The Guardians have one
- 0:24Speaker 1: game lead. The Yankees are in Detroit as the Tigers
- 0:27Speaker 1: try to climb out of their mess. Swept the White
- 0:30Speaker 1: Sox over the weekend, Phillies at Nationals, Nationals up at
- 0:34Speaker 1: a hot club. Phillies of course wrecked the Mets this weekend.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And Braves at Padres as the Padres try to get
- 0:41Speaker 1: something going here. They're finally starting to get some of
- 0:44Speaker 1: their star players in a better place. Offensively okay, But
- 0:48Speaker 1: with all of that, I want to start the show
- 0:51Speaker 1: with what was the biggest story yesterday, and we'll be
- 0:54Speaker 1: a big story. The Raphael Devers finger waving get away
- 0:59Speaker 1: from me. I don't want a pinch runner in Miami
- 1:03Speaker 1: against the Miami Marlins. Here was the situation. In case
- 1:06Speaker 1: you missed it, I'll lay it all out for you
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Giants were trailing two to one. In the ninth inning,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Devers comes back from two to draw a lead off walk.
- 1:15Speaker 1: All good so far, time run is on base. Manager
- 1:20Speaker 1: Tony Vaitello inserts a pinch runner, Jonah Cox. You can
- 1:24Speaker 1: see right there in the photo. Or Rafael Devers was
- 1:27Speaker 1: having none of it. Now, why was there a pinch runner?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Any baseball fan understands why there was a pinch runner
- 1:34Speaker 1: because Jonah Cox is on the team to run and
- 1:37Speaker 1: has a better chance of scoring from first on a
- 1:39Speaker 1: double than Devers. Even if Jonah Cox doesn't steal second,
- 1:43Speaker 1: doesn't matter. You want the best runner in there. Devers
- 1:47Speaker 1: sprint speed bottom twenty two percent of the league. And
- 1:50Speaker 1: yet Ralphaeld Devers shook his finger at the dugout, tried
- 1:54Speaker 1: to wave off. Cox, gets in the dugout, slips away
- 1:59Speaker 1: from my button app from the bench coach Jays Tangler.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Not a good look, to say the least. Now, you
- 2:06Speaker 1: may remember Ralphield Devers looked selfish in Boston when he
- 2:09Speaker 1: refused to play first base. There were mitigating circumstances with
- 2:14Speaker 1: that last season. Remember they had already moved hto DH.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Communication was terrible and they seemingly had turned what had
- 2:22Speaker 1: seemingly been a sweet kid Ralphield Devers into some kind
- 2:25Speaker 1: of latter day Carl Everett. It was not a good
- 2:28Speaker 1: look for Devers. It was also not a good look
- 2:30Speaker 1: for Red Sox, and it resulted in the big trade
- 2:34Speaker 1: that is still generating a lot of talk and a
- 2:38Speaker 1: lot of controversy. All right, In that case, I didn't
- 2:42Speaker 1: necessarily forgive Devors, but I understood where he was coming from.
- 2:46Speaker 1: This one inexcusable. You cannot do what he did yesterday.
- 2:51Speaker 1: It was basically in subordination. And I know fans will say, well,
- 2:57Speaker 1: what about the manager, Why won't the manager bench him?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Why won't Tony Vitello erupt at Devers? Not so easy
- 3:04Speaker 1: to do when the player is owed more than two
- 3:07Speaker 1: hundred million dollars. The major league manager has only so
- 3:11Speaker 1: much power. So here we are in this situation. The Giants,
- 3:15Speaker 1: of course, are in cell mode. Yeah, they'd love the
- 3:19Speaker 1: trade Ralphael Devers. Ha ha ha, good luck with that.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And I was amused by the MLB dot com headline
- 3:26Speaker 1: on this story today in which it said Giants clear
- 3:30Speaker 1: the air after Devers tries to wave off pinch runner.
- 3:34Speaker 1: There was no clearing of the air. Devers did not
- 3:37Speaker 1: comment after the game, another bad look for him. And
- 3:40Speaker 1: here are the Giants. They are going nowhere, fifteen games
- 3:44Speaker 1: under five hundred, only a game and a half ahead
- 3:47Speaker 1: of the Rockies for the worst team in the National League.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Good luck figuring out how to fix that particular mess. Now,
- 3:56Speaker 1: on the bright side of this equation, we have the Marlins.
- 3:59Speaker 1: The Miami Marlins, who you guys might recall. I don't
- 4:03Speaker 1: say this often because I'm usually wrong, but I like
- 4:05Speaker 1: them going into the season, and now I'm gonna pat
- 4:07Speaker 1: myself on the back just a little bit. The Marlins
- 4:11Speaker 1: are fourteen and four in June, and they're doing this
- 4:13Speaker 1: at a time when it looked like they were going
- 4:16Speaker 1: to claps. They lost three starting pitchers to injuries, Ury Perez,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Jansen Junk and Robbie Snelling. And yet now they're only
- 4:25Speaker 1: a half game out in the wild card race. They're
- 4:27Speaker 1: tied with the Padres. They've got four players that I
- 4:30Speaker 1: wrote about last week who are legitimate All Star candidates.
- 4:34Speaker 1: They won't all make the team, of course, but Oto
- 4:36Speaker 1: Lopez up among the league leaders in the National League
- 4:39Speaker 1: in war Max Meyer having a terrific breakout season for
- 4:43Speaker 1: the Fish. Liam Hicks went on the IL yesterday, so
- 4:46Speaker 1: he probably won't be heading to the All Star Game.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And Xavier Edwards, who's a second basement at a very
- 4:52Speaker 1: difficult position, competitive one in the NL. Okay, they're not
- 4:55Speaker 1: all going to make the All Star team, but good
- 4:57Speaker 1: for the Marlins and it's going to be really interesting
- 4:59Speaker 1: to see if they can keep this up because Kyle Stowers,
- 5:03Speaker 1: who now is coming on, was quoted as saying, Hey,
- 5:06Speaker 1: we're starting to play to our capabilities. Our best baseball
- 5:11Speaker 1: might be ahead of uskrats.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Mintmobile plans still just fifteen bucks a month, and.
- 5:20Speaker 1: You're getting a ton from that fifteen dollars.

- 5:25Speaker 3: It hasn't changed. It's still all there for you. I'm
- 5:28Speaker 3: talking about unlimited talk, text and data, fast reliable coverage
- 5:31Speaker 3: on the nation's largest five G network, oh and an
- 5:34Speaker 3: award winning care team. Mintmobile has it all for fifteen
- 5:38Speaker 3: bucks a month. You can even bring your current phone

- 6:13Speaker 1: Another team that feels its best baseball might be ahead
- 6:16Speaker 1: of them the Baltimore Orioles. Now, the Oriols over the
- 6:20Speaker 1: weekend took two of three at Dodger Stadium. Not easy
- 6:24Speaker 1: to do, and really it should have been a sweep.
- 6:28Speaker 1: They blew the Friday night game with some defensive misplays
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the ninth inning behind Ryan Helsley, and really that
- 6:35Speaker 1: game was one that they should have won. As well.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yesterday twelve to one victory, four home runs in that game.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And suddenly the Orioles are feeling better about themselves. Their manager,
- 6:46Speaker 1: Craig Alban has said, we can show that we can
- 6:49Speaker 1: play with anyone. Okay, maybe the Orioles have yet to
- 6:54Speaker 1: win more than three games in a row this season,
- 6:57Speaker 1: and I wrote with Fritch Gieroli last week about their
- 6:59Speaker 1: fun mental lapses, which we saw again on Friday night.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Even Saturday, they tried to blow that game, and they're
- 7:06Speaker 1: going to need to play a cleaner brand of baseball.
- 7:09Speaker 1: But they're in pretty good shape here, pretty good shape
- 7:12Speaker 1: in the wildcard race. Pretty good shape overall, considering that
- 7:16Speaker 1: they haven't played all that well in the aggregate this season.
- 7:20Speaker 1: So we'll see what the Orioles do now. Keeping it
- 7:23Speaker 1: going here. The Tigers, I mentioned them at the top
- 7:26Speaker 1: of the show. The Tigers swept the White Sox this weekend.
- 7:29Speaker 1: The Tiger's right now seven and a half back in
- 7:32Speaker 1: the AL Central five, back in the Wildcard. They've got
- 7:36Speaker 1: the Guardians coming up this I'm sorry that they have
- 7:39Speaker 1: the Yankees coming up this week. And they are finally
- 7:43Speaker 1: starting to play better now. You might recall I wrote
- 7:46Speaker 1: when they were sixteen games under five hundred that they
- 7:48Speaker 1: were going to trade Trek Scooble. Things have changed a
- 7:51Speaker 1: little bit since then. They're now eleven under. The Guardians
- 7:55Speaker 1: are dealing with a number of injuries. Jose Ramirez on
- 7:59Speaker 1: hel Martinez Chase the Laughter and the White Sox are
- 8:02Speaker 1: a team that definitely has competed at extremely high level
- 8:06Speaker 1: this season, but a team that most people believe eventually
- 8:10Speaker 1: will come back to earth somewhat. So no, it's not
- 8:13Speaker 1: over for the Tigers. But the problem they have is
- 8:17Speaker 1: when you're eleven games under five hundred, you cannot afford
- 8:22Speaker 1: another losing spell. And maybe they won't have one Schooble's back.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Maybe they can avoid that, and maybe they can keep
- 8:28Speaker 1: this going okay, And then if that is the case
- 8:32Speaker 1: at the end of July, going into the August third
- 8:34Speaker 1: trade deadline, at that point they'll have a decision. But
- 8:38Speaker 1: the decision might not be can we make the playoffs
- 8:41Speaker 1: with Trek Scooble. It might be Okay, how far can
- 8:44Speaker 1: we go? Because they've got to be realistic about this thing.
- 8:47Speaker 1: If he leaves the free agent, which he's going to do,
- 8:50Speaker 1: they're only going to get a draft pick in return.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So do you bank on that and try to do
- 8:56Speaker 1: it one more time with Trek Scooble that was the
- 8:59Speaker 1: original premise this season for the Tigers, or you cut
- 9:03Speaker 1: bait and say, you know what, let's regroup here, let's
- 9:06Speaker 1: get what we can for a guy who can be
- 9:09Speaker 1: an elite starting pitcher in the postseason, which of course
- 9:12Speaker 1: is the reason you keep Schooble as well. So the
- 9:15Speaker 1: Tigers saga continues to unfold. One more team I want
- 9:19Speaker 1: to mention in this first segment of the show, the
- 9:22Speaker 1: Arizona Diamondbacks. Last week, their GM Mike Hayson goes on
- 9:27Speaker 1: a local radio show in Phoenix and says, we're planning
- 9:30Speaker 1: on buying good intention. The right intention, of course, but
- 9:35Speaker 1: Hazen might have spoken too soon in a four day span.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Listen to what happened to the Diamondbacks. It's awful. Corbyn
- 9:43Speaker 1: Burns and aj Puck both coming back from Tommy John surgeries.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The Diamondbacks were expecting them around the All Star break,
- 9:50Speaker 1: maybe even a little sooner in Puck's case, and they
- 9:52Speaker 1: both suffered new injuries that amounted to setbacks. They're out
- 9:57Speaker 1: until late in the season. Ryan Nelson, one of them
- 10:00Speaker 1: assistant starters, he gets hurt. Michael Soroka, another one of
- 10:03Speaker 1: their consistent starters, gets hurt. Outfielder Jordan Lawler also goes
- 10:08Speaker 1: on the il and Zach Gallon another poor start. He's
- 10:12Speaker 1: having a miserable season, and the Diamondbacks. Yeah, they planned
- 10:16Speaker 1: on buying, and maybe Mike Haysen still plans on buying.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And my goodness, the deadline is still six weeks away.
- 10:22Speaker 1: But they've got a long way to go here, and
- 10:26Speaker 1: a long way to go just to get healthy again.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So this all happened once more in a four day span,
- 10:33Speaker 1: four days, all these injuries, and it just shows how
- 10:38Speaker 1: quickly things can change at this time of year, and
- 10:40Speaker 1: how for anyone to draw sweeping conclusions about anything going
- 10:44Speaker 1: on and to say, Oh, this guy's getting traded, that
- 10:47Speaker 1: guy's getting traded. This team's a seller, this team's a buyer.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Hold on, got a long way to go before the deadline.
- 10:54Speaker 1: All right, We will be right back after this with
- 10:57Speaker 1: the Inside Dish, and I'm going to talk about the
- 10:59Speaker 1: New York Mets. Time now for the Inside Dish, the
- 11:09Speaker 1: part of the show where I talk about a trend
- 11:11Speaker 1: in the game, something I've written, something I've seen, And
- 11:14Speaker 1: as I warned you at the end of the first segment,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about the New York Mets. Now,
- 11:19Speaker 1: we had the Mets on Fox Saturday night. It was
- 11:22Speaker 1: the game they lost fifteen to three to the Phillies.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But I want to go back to the days before,
- 11:28Speaker 1: as I was prepping for the broadcast, particularly after they
- 11:31Speaker 1: won the first game of the series in Philadelphia on Thursday.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Then they had an off day Friday going into the
- 11:37Speaker 1: Saturday game. So I'm preparing my notes for the broadcast,
- 11:40Speaker 1: getting ready, and I'm starting to picture in my head
- 11:46Speaker 1: the possibility of the Mets bouncing back. I can kind
- 11:50Speaker 1: of see it, putting things together again. They had won
- 11:53Speaker 1: the first game of the series. They were twenty four
- 11:55Speaker 1: and twenty at that moment since May first. Also since
- 11:59Speaker 1: May first, they were twelve in the majors and runs
- 12:01Speaker 1: per game. They finally were performing at a higher level Offensively,
- 12:06Speaker 1: they had Francisco Lindoor coming back. That will happen this week.
- 12:09Speaker 1: They had Tyrone Taylor close to coming back, Ronnie Maurisio,
- 12:13Speaker 1: all these guys making progress, and you're thinking, Okay, maybe
- 12:17Speaker 1: there's a chance here, maybe there is a ray of light.
- 12:21Speaker 1: But the problem, as I said on the broadcast early
- 12:24Speaker 1: in the broadcast, after Freddy Peralta started getting lit up,
- 12:27Speaker 1: is that they entered the game Saturday still seven games
- 12:31Speaker 1: under five hundred, and now of course it's nine. After
- 12:34Speaker 1: they get shellacked the last two games in Philadelphia, So
- 12:38Speaker 1: to get to eighty five wins, and that's probably the
- 12:40Speaker 1: bottom range for a wild card. The Reds got in
- 12:42Speaker 1: with eighty three last year, but let's look at eighty
- 12:45Speaker 1: five as a potential target. To get to eighty five,
- 12:48Speaker 1: they're going to need to go fifty one and thirty
- 12:51Speaker 1: four the rest of the way. Fifty one and thirty four. Now,
- 12:55Speaker 1: how do you do that? The way to get back
- 12:57Speaker 1: to five hundred. The first obstacle for the Mets is
- 13:00Speaker 1: to get strong starting pitching, and you have to kind
- 13:04Speaker 1: of do that night after night. That's how the Phillies
- 13:07Speaker 1: got back into contention under Don Maddingly, Wheeler came back,
- 13:12Speaker 1: they had Sanchez, Lozardo's been good. They put some things
- 13:15Speaker 1: together with their rotation, even with Nola inconsistent and Painter
- 13:19Speaker 1: not good, they were able to mount this surge. The Mets.
- 13:25Speaker 1: It's difficult to see how they're going to do that.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Peralta was acquired to be, if not the ace, a
- 13:31Speaker 1: top of the rotation starter. Awful and his season by
- 13:35Speaker 1: and large has been disappointing. He was awful Saturday night,
- 13:39Speaker 1: disappointing overall. Sean and Iyah, he came on of late
- 13:44Speaker 1: and has had two good starts in a row, but
- 13:46Speaker 1: still a question. The guy who is the presumptive ace now,
- 13:49Speaker 1: Nola McLain had a little bit of a rocky period,
- 13:51Speaker 1: understandable in his second season, but he's coming off a
- 13:55Speaker 1: strong start in Cincinnati, so you could see okay going
- 13:58Speaker 1: into the Peralta game. Paralta McLean. Maniah, that's not bad,
- 14:04Speaker 1: but again Paralta hugely disappointing on Saturday, overall disappointing as well.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Maniah Okay, perhaps he'll be okay, but again there's just
- 14:14Speaker 1: not enough there. David Peterson, a guy who was an
- 14:17Speaker 1: All Star last year, has lost it. He's been bad
- 14:20Speaker 1: all season, bad again Sunday night. Who knows what they'll
- 14:24Speaker 1: get from Senga. He's still in the rotation. Christian Scott
- 14:27Speaker 1: coming back from the injured list relatively soon. That should help.
- 14:31Speaker 1: But you're piecing this together and you're seeing the Mets
- 14:34Speaker 1: and you're recalling that the Clayholmes injury, the fracture of tibula,
- 14:39Speaker 1: that was absolutely crushing for them because if they had
- 14:42Speaker 1: a chance to really mount something here, it was going
- 14:45Speaker 1: to be with their pitching healthy and Clay Holmes had
- 14:48Speaker 1: to be healthy. He was arguably their top starter, accepting MacLean,
- 14:53Speaker 1: who is in his second year. So I don't see
- 14:56Speaker 1: it with this rotation. So then you ask the question, Okay, then,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and what's next? Lindor is back this week, but the
- 15:03Speaker 1: Mets need to get hot in a hurry to avoid
- 15:06Speaker 1: becoming a seller. And yes, they are trending toward becoming
- 15:10Speaker 1: a seller. And yet you ask, what is there to sell?
- 15:14Speaker 1: Peralta not only is hurting the team, he's hurting his
- 15:17Speaker 1: trade value. You've got Peterson, another potential free agent. Perhaps
- 15:21Speaker 1: a team will take a shot on him, but they're
- 15:23Speaker 1: not going to give you much in return. You've got
- 15:26Speaker 1: some bullpen pieces, some lefties AJ Minter and Brooks rally
- 15:29Speaker 1: potential free agents. They'll bring B level prospects, probably back
- 15:34Speaker 1: to you. And you've got Clay Holmes, who if a
- 15:36Speaker 1: team is willing to take a chance the way that
- 15:39Speaker 1: Blue Jays did with Shane Bieber last season and trade
- 15:41Speaker 1: for a guy in the injured list, they may think, Okay,
- 15:44Speaker 1: in the final six weeks or so, we can get
- 15:46Speaker 1: something out of Clay Holmes. But again, none of these
- 15:49Speaker 1: deals is going to be a blockbuster. For the Mets.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Maybe a trade, Luke Weaver. I don't know you can
- 15:56Speaker 1: do that. The one strength they've had this season has
- 16:00Speaker 1: been bullpen management and their bullpen overall. And when I
- 16:03Speaker 1: say bullpen management, I had this stat ready to go
- 16:06Speaker 1: Saturday night. We never got to it because the Mets
- 16:08Speaker 1: got crushed. Carlos Mendoza, for all his difficulties this year,
- 16:13Speaker 1: for whatever concerns the Mets might have about him, or
- 16:16Speaker 1: the Mets fans I should say might have about him,
- 16:18Speaker 1: they've obviously stuck with him. They have the fewest back
- 16:22Speaker 1: to backs this year. What I mean by that is
- 16:24Speaker 1: the fewest times a reliever has pitched on consecutive days
- 16:27Speaker 1: this season. That shows you that Mendoza has run the
- 16:31Speaker 1: bullpen pretty well because they've had, of course, all of
- 16:34Speaker 1: these short starts, and he has still managed to run
- 16:38Speaker 1: the bullpen in a way where he hasn't crushed any reliever.
- 16:40Speaker 1: So okay, good on that end, but a good bullpen
- 16:45Speaker 1: doesn't do you much good when you've got a team
- 16:47Speaker 1: that is falling behind all the time, and that is
- 16:50Speaker 1: a frequent occurrence with the Mets. Now. Stearns is going
- 16:54Speaker 1: to be the question here, and that's The biggest issue
- 16:57Speaker 1: with the Mets. The question that's going to be going forward,
- 17:00Speaker 1: what do you do with David Stearns if your owner
- 17:03Speaker 1: Steve Cohen. Now, a lot of fans want Stearns gone,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and understandably so. This season has been a mess coming
- 17:10Speaker 1: off last season, which for the final four months was
- 17:13Speaker 1: a mess. What Sterens did was he reacted to that disappointment,
- 17:18Speaker 1: the disappointment of twenty twenty five, by orchestrating a dramatic makeover,
- 17:23Speaker 1: and the makeover in the eyes of many fans, and
- 17:28Speaker 1: a lot of people seem to have forgotten they thought this.
- 17:31Speaker 1: A lot of people wanted Pete a Lonzo gone and
- 17:33Speaker 1: Brandon nimogone and Jeff McNeil gone, and the idea of
- 17:36Speaker 1: starting over understandable. They had not one with that group.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And if you want to start over, okay, the problem
- 17:43Speaker 1: with that is you've got to have good answers. And
- 17:47Speaker 1: I questioned in January whether they had chosen the right players,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and it turns out in many cases they have not.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And the problem I had I mentioned this on the
- 17:56Speaker 1: broadcast as well, was that you brought in a series
- 17:59Speaker 1: of guys who have lent the injury histories and also
- 18:03Speaker 1: a guy Marcus Simeon in decline, Robert Junior injury history,
- 18:07Speaker 1: Polanco injury history, Bobaschet for that matter. He's been healthy,
- 18:11Speaker 1: He's had leg problems in the past too. They've been
- 18:13Speaker 1: lucky with him. So you did all that. It hasn't worked.
- 18:18Speaker 1: At least it hasn't worked to this point. You can say, well,
- 18:20Speaker 1: the injury to Holmes was crushing. No no, no, no no.
- 18:23Speaker 1: When you've got the game's second highest payroll, the loss
- 18:26Speaker 1: of one picture shouldn't hit you so or hurt you
- 18:29Speaker 1: that much. So people are going to want David Stearns gone,
- 18:34Speaker 1: and people are gonna think, well, Carlos Mendoza has to go. Maybe,
- 18:37Speaker 1: so you have to change your manager in this circumstance.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I get it, But David Stearns, be careful what you
- 18:43Speaker 1: wish for, because the Mets have had a lot of
- 18:46Speaker 1: turnover in that position. The head of baseball operations under
- 18:49Speaker 1: Cohen and Stearns has done some good things. Rebuilt the
- 18:54Speaker 1: processes in the farm system, created an environment where aj
- 18:58Speaker 1: Ewing and Carson benj in particular could come up. There
- 19:01Speaker 1: were spots available to them. Ewing's case because of Robert's injury,
- 19:05Speaker 1: but they created an opportunity for benj and they're doing
- 19:08Speaker 1: that for other young players as well. Now has it
- 19:12Speaker 1: all worked out? No, it has not all worked out.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But you change your head at baseball operations and you're
- 19:17Speaker 1: kind of starting all over again. Maybe that's the appropriate
- 19:21Speaker 1: decision here, but I'm not sure it is. I'm not
- 19:24Speaker 1: sure that's the way to go when again, you've had
- 19:28Speaker 1: all that turnover, you've had some good things happen under
- 19:31Speaker 1: Stearn's he just needs to make better decisions now. If
- 19:35Speaker 1: he proves incapable of that, if for instance, they have
- 19:38Speaker 1: another bad offseason and they don't improve next year, then
- 19:42Speaker 1: I think you're talking about something else. But Steve Cohen
- 19:45Speaker 1: has invested a lot in David Sterns, signed him to
- 19:48Speaker 1: a huge contract. That was the guy they wanted all along.
- 19:52Speaker 1: So we'll see how this all plays out going forward.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Sterns clearly is going to have to make better decis
- 20:00Speaker 1: choose better players for lack of a better term, And
- 20:03Speaker 1: then the question becomes how much confidence does Steve Cohen
- 20:07Speaker 1: still have in him to do that? All Right, we'll
- 20:10Speaker 1: be back with grilling Ken right after this. When my
- 20:16Speaker 1: puppy Bella has something wrong. I'm not going to go
- 20:19Speaker 1: around googling what to do.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Yeah, Kratz, let's have a better plan. Today's episode is

- 21:13Speaker 3: in the business of insurance.
- 21:21Speaker 1: All right, here we go with grilling Ken. Time for
- 21:23Speaker 1: your questions. Let's get to them. First. One comes from
- 21:27Speaker 1: John C Underscore ninety, who asks, the Dodgers are flushing
- 21:31Speaker 1: way too many games right now, but is that the
- 21:33Speaker 1: October plan? Again, John, I would suggest the answer to
- 21:36Speaker 1: that question is yes. And the Dodgers are a funny
- 21:41Speaker 1: team to follow during the regular season because we all
- 21:44Speaker 1: know they're going to get to October and they are
- 21:48Speaker 1: playing essentially for October. No Snell right now, no Glass now.
- 21:52Speaker 1: They're on the injured list. They have River Ryan stashed
- 21:55Speaker 1: a triple A, another starting pitcher. They like him. He
- 21:58Speaker 1: can come up and can tribute, and Taoscar Hernandez is
- 22:02Speaker 1: on the il. They've got all these things going on,
- 22:05Speaker 1: none of them terribly awful, but they at various points
- 22:11Speaker 1: in the regular season. This has happened over the last
- 22:13Speaker 1: couple of years. Look like the motivation isn't totally there.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It's not that they're not trying, it's just that they
- 22:19Speaker 1: don't play with the same urgency that they will play
- 22:22Speaker 1: with in October. So yeah, I would say they're flushing
- 22:25Speaker 1: too many games right now. At the same time, I
- 22:27Speaker 1: would say it's just not that great a concern. They
- 22:30Speaker 1: don't have their whole team for one thing, and they
- 22:34Speaker 1: don't have that carrot in front of them, and they're
- 22:37Speaker 1: human beings. They need that carrot. It's one hundred and
- 22:39Speaker 1: sixty two games. They're not going to play with an
- 22:41Speaker 1: urgency the entire year when they know the whole thing
- 22:45Speaker 1: comes down to what they do in the postseason. All right,
- 22:49Speaker 1: Next question, This one comes from Tyler Max Smith, who
- 22:51Speaker 1: says nearly every player that signed late Gallan Giolito, Littel, etc.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Or Misspring Training Haisan Kim are having terrible seasons. Do
- 23:02Speaker 1: you think that trend will impact when players sign going forward?
- 23:06Speaker 1: Got Kim's name wrong, it's hash On Kim. That's a
- 23:09Speaker 1: great question, And we've seen this year after year where
- 23:12Speaker 1: the guys who sign late often have trouble getting into
- 23:15Speaker 1: a rhythm. Now lettell Us pitch better of late Giolito
- 23:19Speaker 1: is still rounding into form. Gown. I don't know what's
- 23:21Speaker 1: wrong there. This is a guy who was top three
- 23:24Speaker 1: cy Young voting only a couple of years ago, and
- 23:26Speaker 1: he seems to have just declined. But you're right, the
- 23:31Speaker 1: guys who sign late, generally speaking, have a harder time succeeding.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And sure those players ones who get caught like that
- 23:39Speaker 1: are going to want to sign earlier in the future.
- 23:42Speaker 1: The problem is they're not getting offers they like and
- 23:45Speaker 1: they're sitting out there. Maybe they need to settle. That's
- 23:48Speaker 1: fair point, and we'll see that, I'm sure play out
- 23:51Speaker 1: this offseason as well. All right, let's go to one
- 23:54Speaker 1: more question video Game Nation twenty six, who asks, what
- 23:58Speaker 1: have you heard about Wilson Contreras t trade market? What
- 24:00Speaker 1: could the Red Sox get in return? Here's my question,
- 24:04Speaker 1: Why would the Red Sox want to trade Wilson Contreras.
- 24:07Speaker 1: He's the one guy in the lineup who from the
- 24:09Speaker 1: right side gives them power. Now he's signed for I
- 24:14Speaker 1: believe at least one more year after this. I don't
- 24:17Speaker 1: know exactly what his contract is. I don't think they
- 24:19Speaker 1: should be trading him if they want to compete next year.
- 24:22Speaker 1: If they don't, fine, But the Red Sox never take
- 24:25Speaker 1: a full step back. They're not going to North should they.
- 24:27Speaker 1: So you need Wilson Contreras on your team, you don't
- 24:31Speaker 1: need to be trading him now. There are other things
- 24:33Speaker 1: they can do. Sonny Gray, a oldest Chapman one of
- 24:36Speaker 1: the outfielders. All of that for sure, and probably more,
- 24:40Speaker 1: but I wouldn't be trading Wilson Contreras. All right with that,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I want to thank everyone for watching, for listening. Foul
- 24:47Speaker 1: Territory is coming up at one o'clock Eastern. Bucco Territories.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Josh Harrison, Eric Kratz, and Scott Broun, Host, Bob Nightingale
- 24:55Speaker 1: and Brandon Marsh will join. We're back Thursday at twelve
- 24:58Speaker 1: thirty Eastern. Have a great way, everyone, I should say. Also,
- 25:01Speaker 1: I hope everyone had a great Father's Day. We'll talk
- 25:03Speaker 1: to you on Thursday.
