- 1:05Speaker 1: The trade deadline has come and gone. The Twins made
- 1:10Speaker 1: one last deal shortly before the deadline for Blue Jay's
- 1:13Speaker 1: reliever Jeff Hoffman. There will be some jokes about that scenario,
- 1:18Speaker 1: for sure, but we are here to break down. Oh,
- 1:21Speaker 1: there he is. I was just about to turn his
- 1:23Speaker 1: camera off, and then he's back. We wanted to hop
- 1:26Speaker 1: on and break it all down. That's the fourth deal
- 1:28Speaker 1: the Twins that made over the last few weeks, all
- 1:30Speaker 1: of them for pitching. They added Tommy Nance, aj Minter,
- 1:35Speaker 1: Dean Kramer. Took me a minute, there got it. And
- 1:38Speaker 1: then today Jeff Hoffman and no major leaguers went out
- 1:41Speaker 1: in any of these deals, which that was my prediction
- 1:44Speaker 1: on Friday, Thank you very much. It got a little
- 1:47Speaker 1: harry there with Trevor Larnick. I was worried he was
- 1:49Speaker 1: going to have a mid Odissey odyssey of his own,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but he stays with the Twins. Ryan Jeffers also stays
- 1:56Speaker 1: with the Twins. We'll cover as much of it as
- 1:58Speaker 1: we can before Dan has to going to talk to
- 2:00Speaker 1: the men and charge Jeremy. So well, if you have questions,
- 2:03Speaker 1: if you're watching on the YouTube live stream right now,
- 2:06Speaker 1: feel free to drop them in there. I see a
- 2:08Speaker 1: lot of comments flowing in. I'll try to keep I'll
- 2:10Speaker 1: kind of try to keep track of all that, but
- 2:13Speaker 1: let's start with the newest thing that just happened in
- 2:16Speaker 1: talk us through the latest trade to bring in Jeff Hoffman.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, the Twins were optimistic as far back as Friday
- 2:23Speaker 3: that they were gonna get a right handed reliever. Everybody
- 2:26Speaker 3: at this point knows that there was the Trevor Larnock
- 2:29Speaker 3: deal that fell through, and according to reports, I was
- 2:33Speaker 3: because Jim Crane nixed it. I knew there was a
- 2:35Speaker 3: deal kind of canceled at the eleventh hour. Didn't know
- 2:38Speaker 3: all the details as to why. But then we had
- 2:41Speaker 3: a couple of days of just silence and it got
- 2:44Speaker 3: down to the last half hour.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I did check with people throughout the.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Day, and you know, even last night, prices were extremely
- 2:52Speaker 3: high for what the Twins were looking for, and.
- 2:55Speaker 4: They were gonna wait, and they were gonna wait.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But around an hour before the deadline, it just seemed
- 2:59Speaker 3: like they had some good momentum in their way. There
- 3:01Speaker 3: were two things I learned at that point. They expected
- 3:03Speaker 3: to make at least one deal, and that Ryan Jeffers
- 3:07Speaker 3: was not going to go anywhere likely to not be traded,
- 3:10Speaker 3: so the Twins were able to do what they did,
- 3:14Speaker 3: adding two bullpen pieces like key pieces in mintor giving
- 3:18Speaker 3: them their top lefty and Jeff Hoffman, who's a really
- 3:21Speaker 3: experienced writy.
- 3:22Speaker 4: He had troubles and you know it could be.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Known forever for Game seven of the World Series, but
- 3:27Speaker 3: Jeff Hoffman has been outstanding largely the last four years
- 3:31Speaker 3: of reliever. I think even with some struggles in the
- 3:33Speaker 3: first part of this season, they got him removed from
- 3:36Speaker 3: the closer job in Toronto. He still has a three
- 3:39Speaker 3: twenty two year over the last four years, but his
- 3:41Speaker 3: strikeouts are through the roof good.
- 3:43Speaker 4: You know, this is the guy the.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Twins actually had in minor league camp or in spring
- 3:48Speaker 3: training in twenty twenty three.
- 3:49Speaker 4: They brought him to camp.
- 3:50Speaker 3: They really liked the slider time and thought it that
- 3:53Speaker 3: there was a good future there, but they didn't put
- 3:55Speaker 3: him on the major league roster towards They were taking
- 3:58Speaker 3: a gamble towards the end of spring training that they
- 4:00Speaker 3: could slide him through and nobody would get him. I
- 4:03Speaker 3: remember he did a tryout on the backfields for any
- 4:06Speaker 3: scouts that were willing to come. The Phillies grabbed him
- 4:08Speaker 3: and you know, four years later, the Twins had to
- 4:10Speaker 3: pay a pretty steep price to get him, but they
- 4:13Speaker 3: got him. And you know, this is a guy that
- 4:15Speaker 3: with the experience he has, with the stuff he has,
- 4:18Speaker 3: really makes Derek Shelton's life a lot easier because we
- 4:22Speaker 3: have to think that at some point Andrew Morris, he's
- 4:25Speaker 3: a rookie, he's gonna hit a wall. Joandros Gomes has
- 4:29Speaker 3: been outstanding. We saw both them take losses this weekend.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I don't think that that was anything indicative of future
- 4:35Speaker 3: struggles per se. But at the same time, we're reaching
- 4:38Speaker 3: that point of season where does the dog days the
- 4:41Speaker 3: legs get tired, and when you're a rookie doing this
- 4:43Speaker 3: for the first time, and you and Gomez's case, you're
- 4:46Speaker 3: a converted starter doing this, you know, much more consistently
- 4:50Speaker 3: for the first.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Time, the legs are gonna get heavy. Duff can talk
- 4:54Speaker 4: about that in a minute.
- 4:55Speaker 3: But they absolutely needed a right handed power arm that
- 4:59Speaker 3: got one to throw in the mix. And this bullpen,
- 5:02Speaker 3: especially when you consider Tommy nance edition back on July tenth.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You know, that's the third guy now, and that's as
- 5:09Speaker 3: you think about it, Like everywhere they went at first
- 5:12Speaker 3: if that was the only thing you got, Tommy, nance
- 5:14Speaker 3: was not gonna be enough. We knew that aj Mintor
- 5:16Speaker 3: was a really nice ad. We saw him strike out
- 5:18Speaker 3: Julio Rodriguez this weekend in a key spot. You thought
- 5:23Speaker 3: that was good, but you still needed more. This is
- 5:25Speaker 3: a very good finishing piece. And suddenly this bullpen looks
- 5:29Speaker 3: much deeper than it did. You know in February when
- 5:31Speaker 3: you're wondering about Andrew Chaffin and Liam Hendrix and all
- 5:36Speaker 3: those guys. I mean, this is you can't believe it's
- 5:38Speaker 3: the same season with how much deeper it looks, especially
- 5:41Speaker 3: with the way that Gomez and Morris have really stepped
- 5:44Speaker 3: up and carried the load for the Twins.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Dann. For those of us who may not have known
- 5:49Speaker 1: what you were talking about until you said it, what
- 5:51Speaker 1: happened in Game seven, I forget I honestly I don't
- 5:55Speaker 1: remember what happened soon.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Van Hoffman gave up a ninth any home run to
- 6:04Speaker 3: extend the game, and it sent it to extras.
- 6:07Speaker 4: And we know the rest.
- 6:09Speaker 3: The Dodgers won, and you know, after them and Trek
- 6:12Speaker 3: Skoogle win their third straight World Series, baseball will be
- 6:15Speaker 3: destroyed forever.
- 6:16Speaker 4: So I guess we can come down.
- 6:19Speaker 3: We can pin the downfall of humanity on that one moment, apparently.
- 6:23Speaker 4: But no, I honestly in Jeff Hoffman.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I mean I remember talking to him at the time
- 6:28Speaker 3: in twenty twenty three he was gonna be a good fit.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I also talked to him last year when I went
- 6:32Speaker 3: to Toronto in August just to do kind of a
- 6:36Speaker 3: check in on Louis Varland when the twins were in town,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and Hoffman he's just he's gonna fit in with this
- 6:42Speaker 3: team very well. This is a guy who really developed
- 6:45Speaker 3: later in life. He was twenty nine when he got
- 6:47Speaker 3: good in the bullpen. There were some signs of it
- 6:49Speaker 3: in his earlier stops, but it never really consistently happened.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But I mean, you just look at the strikeout numbers
- 6:55Speaker 3: the last four years, and again he struggled very much
- 6:58Speaker 3: early in the year. I mean he was he was
- 7:00Speaker 3: bad enough they removed him from the closer job. But
- 7:03Speaker 3: since June one, I mean, he's been light time. I
- 7:05Speaker 3: think I have it. He's two and three with a
- 7:07Speaker 3: one to twenty one year, a thirty strikeouts in twenty
- 7:09Speaker 3: two and twenty two, and a thirty innings and six
- 7:13Speaker 3: holds over that time.
- 7:14Speaker 4: So this is a guy that's gonna fit in nicely
- 7:16Speaker 4: because he.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Can save some games on days when Jo Anders go
- 7:19Speaker 3: him as isn't ready or or Andrew.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Morris is down that kind of thing.
- 7:23Speaker 3: So it should be a very interchangeable piece for Derek
- 7:26Speaker 3: Shelton to kind of employ Tyler.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Before I get to your thoughts on the on the deals,
- 7:32Speaker 1: there's a lot of chatter in the comments about your shirt,
- 7:34Speaker 1: a lot of compliments. Somebody wants to know what kind
- 7:37Speaker 1: of shirt is it? What we got? We got a fish,
- 7:40Speaker 1: This is a palm trees.
- 7:41Speaker 4: The full story behind this.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Lavelle Neil oh for this shirt every spring training when
- 7:48Speaker 5: I was with Minnesota and it was one. It was
- 7:49Speaker 5: just so outrageous that I couldn't believe that he owned it.
- 7:53Speaker 5: And then I'm walking through I think it was in
- 7:55Speaker 5: Naples in a store. I spent way more than I'm
- 7:58Speaker 5: even willing to say on this shirt, which good on
- 8:01Speaker 5: Levell for having it, But this was in honor of
- 8:05Speaker 5: Lavell neil rocking of one of one. I found that
- 8:08Speaker 5: the two of two, I don't know what the I
- 8:10Speaker 5: don't even know it's Tory something Tory Richards. But this
- 8:14Speaker 5: has been a I throw it on when I need
- 8:16Speaker 5: a little energy, you know, and get a little boose
- 8:18Speaker 5: when I'm smoking cigars and drinking whiskey sometimes.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So you know, Tyler, you're a pitcher. How are you feeling.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Four arms added to the pen. That's gotta that's gotta
- 8:31Speaker 1: feel good.
- 8:32Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the one Since day one, we've said it
- 8:35Speaker 5: needed to happen. You know, pretty much across the board,
- 8:39Speaker 5: anything you read or saw it was bullpen, bullpen, bullpen.
- 8:43Speaker 5: We just went and got big leaguers that are established.
- 8:47Speaker 5: There's not like guessing on these guys. You know, Hoffman,
- 8:50Speaker 5: Dan just hit on his stats. I think it was
- 8:53Speaker 5: one of those World Series hangover guys, kind of like
- 8:55Speaker 5: Banda was.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It takes a while to catch up again.
- 8:58Speaker 5: You know, your your off season gets sure, where your
- 9:00Speaker 5: spring training comes really quickly. You've got to be ready
- 9:03Speaker 5: for games things like that. You just sometimes you needed
- 9:05Speaker 5: a little extra break that you just weren't allowed to
- 9:07Speaker 5: have because you were in the World Series. So it's
- 9:10Speaker 5: a great problem to have. But at the same time,
- 9:12Speaker 5: that next season comes quickly, and you know, he seems
- 9:15Speaker 5: to have settled in and righted the ship, and it's
- 9:19Speaker 5: it's a lot of good options. It's a lot of
- 9:21Speaker 5: guys that have been in leverage, have been in postseason,
- 9:23Speaker 5: been in World Series for that matter. It's it's all
- 9:26Speaker 5: good things. And you didn't give up. You didn't change
- 9:29Speaker 5: the vibe of that locker room. We talked about that
- 9:30Speaker 5: so many times, how they've got a great group in there,
- 9:33Speaker 5: and plugging in the right pieces or getting of the
- 9:36Speaker 5: wrong piece may affect that.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And it seems that they kind of hit each nail
- 9:41Speaker 2: on the head.
- 9:41Speaker 5: You know, they made enough noise to make it significant
- 9:45Speaker 5: without giving away too much.
- 9:46Speaker 2: You know, I've said this before.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Prospects are prospects, and that's kind of it, you know.
- 9:52Speaker 5: And sometimes I don't work out, sometimes I do. As
- 9:54Speaker 5: soon as that guy goes to the big leagues and doesn't
- 9:56Speaker 5: work out, you can't use them anymore. So if you
- 9:58Speaker 5: use the piece that you might have wanted back down
- 10:01Speaker 5: the road, but you also got a guy who's an
- 10:03Speaker 5: established closer in the major leagues for less than you
- 10:06Speaker 5: probably would have had he had a great season. So
- 10:08Speaker 5: it's I think it's a win across the board. You know,
- 10:12Speaker 5: Larnick seemingly he's staying in town, which I liked. I
- 10:15Speaker 5: love him. He's had such a great year. You know,
- 10:17Speaker 5: he's settled into that leadoff spot there. There's he was
- 10:20Speaker 5: a guy didn't want to see move unfortunately, but you know,
- 10:23Speaker 5: it looks like he's still here. So now it's it's
- 10:26Speaker 5: time to put the pedal to the metal and go.
- 10:28Speaker 5: You know, every seems like White Sox and Indians both
- 10:30Speaker 5: made some moves as well, so everybody's trying.
- 10:34Speaker 1: So sorry it's happened.
- 10:37Speaker 5: So it's fun that, you know, It's it'll make for
- 10:39Speaker 5: some exciting series here the next two months. You know,
- 10:42Speaker 5: if we haven't really even played the White Sox, that
- 10:44Speaker 5: maybe one series that I can remember. So there's gonna
- 10:47Speaker 5: be a lot of games against them. It's gonna be
- 10:48Speaker 5: some dog fights in Chicago. It's it's gonna make for
- 10:52Speaker 5: a fun one.
- 10:53Speaker 6: This is that time of year, aj It is Baseball's
- 10:56Speaker 6: time to shine, and it is Sea geeks time to
- 10:59Speaker 6: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing seating
- 11:04Speaker 6: and games that are even sold out available on sea Geek.
- 11:09Speaker 7: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 11:11Speaker 7: coming up. We have Yankees Cubs coming up. Where's Yankees
- 11:14Speaker 7: red sox that means stuff. Again, there's some big moments
- 11:16Speaker 7: that are coming up here in the as the penachases
- 11:19Speaker 7: really heat up. Go to c can find those green
- 11:22Speaker 7: tickets with the best deals and get yourself out to
- 11:24Speaker 7: an MLB game.
- 11:26Speaker 6: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you. They will actually put
- 11:28Speaker 6: a red dot next to a ticket that they don't
- 11:31Speaker 6: feel is your best. Look. Green dot means very good
- 11:36Speaker 6: code for you. It's Territory ten ten percent off your
- 11:40Speaker 6: next set of MLB tickets at Sea Geek. That's ten
- 11:43Speaker 6: percent off MLB tickets when you use the promo code
- 11:46Speaker 6: Territory one zero. Make sure you click the link in
- 11:48Speaker 6: the description to download the app and have the code
- 11:50Speaker 6: automatically added to your account so you can use it later.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yeah. The prospects on the way out for Hoffman, Jason Hill,
- 11:57Speaker 1: John klin and de Murray pina And and Dason Hill
- 12:00Speaker 1: was the headliner of the entire trade deadline as it
- 12:04Speaker 1: turned out for the Twins number seven I believe on
- 12:07Speaker 1: MLB's rankings of their prospects, but overall, clearly some additions
- 12:13Speaker 1: made across the board and like I was actually very
- 12:18Speaker 1: happy that there was no trade of Larnick or Jeffers,
- 12:22Speaker 1: even though I don't know what the plan is with
- 12:24Speaker 1: Jeffers at this point, but I think, like.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yeah, extend them tomorrow.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, because so like this is what the Twins. We
- 12:32Speaker 1: were talking about this in our text earlier, Like everyone
- 12:36Speaker 1: knows the Twins don't pay, so they I'm guessing, and
- 12:40Speaker 1: you're gonna talk to Jeremy's only a little bit, Daniel.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Maybe it'll come up, but like I'm guessing, the offers
- 12:45Speaker 1: are probably not great for Jeffers because like why why
- 12:49Speaker 1: not just wait until the offseason if you want him
- 12:50Speaker 1: long term? And then with Trevor Larnick, you know, all
- 12:54Speaker 1: of a sudden, hitting is a real question for this
- 12:56Speaker 1: team right now. The last month has not been great
- 12:58Speaker 1: at least in terms of scoring run and he's been
- 13:01Speaker 1: one of the most consistent hitters, and I just think, like,
- 13:04Speaker 1: keep the good if you really, if you're really trying
- 13:06Speaker 1: to build with this team, you wanted to keep that
- 13:08Speaker 1: group intact, and they did.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Look with Jeffers, I don't think it was a
- 13:13Speaker 3: lack of good offers that was out there. I mean,
- 13:16Speaker 3: we saw what the Red Sox did Bradley Rutchman. They
- 13:18Speaker 3: paid to Baltimore for Radley Rutchman. So I think the
- 13:23Speaker 3: Twins were getting some fair offers for Ryan Jeffers. What
- 13:26Speaker 3: I think happened is that they looked at it and
- 13:28Speaker 3: they said, we're going to offer him the qualifying offer.
- 13:30Speaker 3: He's not going to accept the qualifying offer. And I'm
- 13:33Speaker 3: fairly positive on that one. He wants to be a
- 13:36Speaker 3: free agent and he wants to get a big contract.
- 13:37Speaker 3: He's got Scott Boris as an agent. He will be
- 13:40Speaker 3: the best catcher on the market. He will get a
- 13:43Speaker 3: nice long term deal in the offseason because teams need
- 13:46Speaker 3: catching help. There were three big teams between the Rays,
- 13:49Speaker 3: the Yankees, and the Red Sox absolutely needed catching help
- 13:52Speaker 3: at this deadline. You know, I feel like he should
- 13:57Speaker 3: be just fine as a free agent.
- 13:58Speaker 4: He's not going to stick around.
- 14:00Speaker 3: The Twins can absorb that twenty million plus they would
- 14:04Speaker 3: have to for a one year deal. I think they
- 14:06Speaker 3: wouldn't hate that at all if Ryan Jeffers stuck for
- 14:09Speaker 3: a one year, because look, that gives them time to
- 14:11Speaker 3: buys them time to get to Von Lackey. Now, obviously
- 14:14Speaker 3: that's gonna be a big number if to take on
- 14:18Speaker 3: if he were to stick around. But again, I just
- 14:20Speaker 3: don't see Ryan Jeffers doing that. He's going to get
- 14:23Speaker 3: a chance to get his long term deal and move on.
- 14:26Speaker 3: So then it became a like, do you want to
- 14:29Speaker 3: break up this group? Like, I'm just going with the
- 14:32Speaker 3: factors here, Wigh, do you want to break up the group?
- 14:36Speaker 3: That was something that was clearly the Twins didn't really
- 14:40Speaker 3: feel strong about that. They wanted to keep Larnick, they
- 14:42Speaker 3: wanted to keep Ryan Jeffers. There's good vibes in that clubhouse.
- 14:45Speaker 3: But also you get two months of Ryan Jeffers now
- 14:49Speaker 3: to help you, which you would have to figure out
- 14:50Speaker 3: a way to make up for that had you traded him.
- 14:53Speaker 3: And when it's a qualifying offer, regardless of what the
- 14:57Speaker 3: new CBA is, there's going to be some kind of compensation,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and you know you.
- 15:02Speaker 4: It seems likely that the.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Rules won't change for that first year no matter what,
- 15:08Speaker 3: because you can't change the rules that are already in place.
- 15:11Speaker 3: So the Twins would get a comp pick after the
- 15:14Speaker 3: first round. So it's a solid player. In fact, one
- 15:18Speaker 3: of the guys that I'm sure teams were asking about
- 15:20Speaker 3: with the Twins that's jumping up in their prospect system
- 15:23Speaker 3: is Riley quick. They got him with a thirty six
- 15:25Speaker 3: pick last year, I believe, and he's a fast mover
- 15:28Speaker 3: in their system.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I believe he's already a double A.
- 15:33Speaker 3: So that could be a very good pick to get
- 15:35Speaker 3: if you let Ryan Jeffers walk again.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I think they look at it as like we're.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Either getting that pick and we get two months of
- 15:41Speaker 3: Ryan Jeffers, or if Ryan Jeffers is forced to say, say,
- 15:45Speaker 3: the lockout screws up the offseason, right, maybe it just
- 15:48Speaker 3: totally messes things up and Ryan Jeffers had to accept
- 15:51Speaker 3: the qualifying offer. They get Ryan Jeffers for one more year.
- 15:54Speaker 3: They're not going to hate that because they don't have
- 15:56Speaker 3: to extend him long term, but they get to keep
- 15:58Speaker 3: him and bridge that gap to von Lackey getting here.
- 16:01Speaker 4: By the way, von Lackey had an amazing.
- 16:03Speaker 3: First weekend down Fort Myers, had a couple of hot stealings.
- 16:08Speaker 3: That arm looks that's a cannon of an arm for
- 16:11Speaker 3: von Lackey, and he had a seven eighty six on
- 16:13Speaker 3: base or ops after the weekend, scored four runs on
- 16:17Speaker 3: Sunday in like a blowout twenty to three game. So
- 16:21Speaker 3: I mean, I look at that and I say I
- 16:24Speaker 3: think that really factored into their equation. The Twins really
- 16:27Speaker 3: like what they have on the offensive side. They have
- 16:30Speaker 3: a group that has stuck together and really committed to
- 16:35Speaker 3: the plan all season long. They like each other, They're
- 16:38Speaker 3: playing for each other, and I mean that's why they're
- 16:40Speaker 3: at the Odyssey right now. I'm sure they're out of.
- 16:43Speaker 1: The it's done now right.
- 16:44Speaker 4: In fact, maybe they're, yeah, I watching it, watching together.
- 16:48Speaker 1: No, maybe maybe crab.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Watching the Odyssey. That is this explanation right here.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Yeah, But I think with with Jeffers, they they felt
- 16:58Speaker 3: good about keeping him.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I'm sure the prices were out there.
- 17:01Speaker 3: We again, we haven't talked to Jeremy Zol yet, but
- 17:04Speaker 3: the Yankees weren't able to do much, and I know
- 17:06Speaker 3: they wanted catching They were on him for a while.
- 17:09Speaker 4: And as far as Larnick, you know, there was one
- 17:12Speaker 4: point in the afternoon.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Where it was right before the Astros acquired Dalton var
- 17:17Speaker 3: Show from the Blue Jays, and there was a lot
- 17:20Speaker 3: of smoke coming from national people. I think John Hayman
- 17:23Speaker 3: and Bob Nightingale both said, Hey, the Twins and Astros
- 17:27Speaker 3: have re engaged on Larnick, and so I reached out
- 17:29Speaker 3: to Twins officials at that point, and by the third
- 17:32Speaker 3: person I reached out to, they were getting angry because,
- 17:35Speaker 3: like what did the other people saying no, not mean enough,
- 17:38Speaker 3: We're not getting rid of him, and I think that
- 17:42Speaker 3: they weren't re engaging.
- 17:44Speaker 4: They did not.
- 17:45Speaker 3: They said all the reports with the Astros were negative,
- 17:50Speaker 3: so I.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Think, you know, who knows what came into it.
- 17:53Speaker 3: But the way Trevor Larnick responded this weekend to that
- 17:58Speaker 3: initial report was pretty damn good. And he got on
- 18:01Speaker 3: base four times and nine plate appearances. He homered twice.
- 18:05Speaker 3: He jump started the rally in Sunday's game with the
- 18:08Speaker 3: two run homer. He showed them a lot. He showed
- 18:11Speaker 3: them a lot all season the way he's played, and
- 18:14Speaker 3: I think they felt good about continuing forward with that
- 18:17Speaker 3: platoon even if it you know, they would have brought
- 18:19Speaker 3: up Walker Jenkins probably, you know, that's that's just my
- 18:22Speaker 3: guess is that had they traded him, they would have
- 18:24Speaker 3: brought up Walker Jenkins. And I was gonna ask you, Yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 3: that just seemed logical. I don't know that that's definitely
- 18:30Speaker 3: the case, but that seemed logical that they would do
- 18:33Speaker 3: that give Roaden some more playing time and bring up
- 18:36Speaker 3: Walker Jenkins, especially with Buckston on the al. But again,
- 18:39Speaker 3: now you can kind of take your time and not
- 18:41Speaker 3: break up the clubhouse. That group is definitely tight and
- 18:45Speaker 3: really liked each other, really likes each other, and I
- 18:49Speaker 3: know internally there was a lot of desire to stick
- 18:52Speaker 3: together with those guys, and you know, now they shored
- 18:57Speaker 3: up a lot of their weaknesses and still kept that
- 19:00Speaker 3: offense together. So I think they're probably feeling pretty good
- 19:03Speaker 3: about what they accomplished. And by the way, the Twins
- 19:05Speaker 3: added about eight and a half million in payroll on
- 19:08Speaker 3: this They took on the rest of Jeff hoffin the
- 19:12Speaker 3: book salary this year, which is three and a half million,
- 19:15Speaker 3: and it's you know, last year, the Twins may probably
- 19:18Speaker 3: traded more guys than any team in the history of
- 19:21Speaker 3: baseball over the course of the deadline at ten.
- 19:24Speaker 4: This year, they.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Did another first and they probably added more payroll than
- 19:28Speaker 3: they ever have at the deadline with about eight and
- 19:31Speaker 3: a half million absorbed between a j mentor between Dean
- 19:34Speaker 3: Kramer and Jeff Hoffman. And I think that probably helped
- 19:37Speaker 3: them as far as what prospects they had to give up,
- 19:40Speaker 3: because in that you know, Mentor deal. They didn't give
- 19:45Speaker 3: up a ton. I think they didn't give up anybody
- 19:47Speaker 3: in their top twenty. And the jury will be out
- 19:51Speaker 3: on what they gave up in this one. But one
- 19:55Speaker 3: thing to be cautioned. John Klein, who is in this
- 19:58Speaker 3: deal is from Brooklyn.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Port one of us.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's twenty four. Yeah, he's twenty four, and
- 20:05Speaker 3: he's got a fastball cutter combo and I don't know
- 20:09Speaker 3: if I can remember in history when the Twins traded
- 20:12Speaker 3: the Blue Jays of one of us who had a
- 20:14Speaker 3: fastball cutter.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I'm going to cut your mic. I'm going to cut
- 20:17Speaker 1: your mic, lou.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I mean John Klin even put the hat on, had
- 20:24Speaker 4: a smile like Louis, Like I'm not kidding.
- 20:27Speaker 3: In spring training he sort of had a similar face structure.
- 20:31Speaker 4: To Louis, and I was like, is that Louis?
- 20:33Speaker 3: So man? I mean they traded Louis Varland's little brother
- 20:37Speaker 3: to the to the Blue Jays.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So was the the initial warnick astro stuff you're hearing
- 20:42Speaker 1: that had some actual stone?
- 20:44Speaker 4: I heard that was? Yeah, that was that had actual Yes, just.
- 20:49Speaker 1: A follow up to the Jim Yeah, Houston's uncle Jim
- 20:52Speaker 1: says absolutely not so like apparently it just it just
- 20:56Speaker 1: would have been such a gamble if the goal is
- 20:59Speaker 1: to make a push for this team, Like I want
- 21:01Speaker 1: to see Walker Jenkins as much as anybody, but yeah,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but I don't want to rush him and put that
- 21:06Speaker 1: pressure on him. Right, you have to hit two eighty six, yep,
- 21:09Speaker 1: right away. You have to give us what Trevor Larnick
- 21:11Speaker 1: was giving us, or else it's a problem. And I
- 21:14Speaker 1: think it was the right call to not to not
- 21:17Speaker 1: make that move again. I don't know what the offers
- 21:19Speaker 1: were on the table or whatever, but but like Tyler I,
- 21:25Speaker 1: we talked and talked and talked about this deadline, and
- 21:29Speaker 1: we said, like, the Twins put themselves in a very
- 21:32Speaker 1: interesting spot. They came out publicly Tom Pollad and Jeremy's
- 21:35Speaker 1: old and said like, we want to invest in this team, right,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and then the team is pretty flawed and you don't
- 21:42Speaker 1: know what to exactly what to make of it. And
- 21:46Speaker 1: we kind of thought they'd try to thread this needle
- 21:48Speaker 1: of we're gonna make them better without giving up too much,
- 21:51Speaker 1: and it seems like they did. But now we have
- 21:53Speaker 1: forty some games to find out how much it's really
- 21:56Speaker 1: gonna matter.
- 21:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think what we're kind of just joking about,
- 22:01Speaker 5: but it it really does give them an opportunity to
- 22:04Speaker 5: slowly temper these guys, these prospects. You know, your your
- 22:08Speaker 5: number one picks, you know, Jenkins and Company and Saint Paul,
- 22:12Speaker 5: whoever you think might be.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Of aid to you.
- 22:16Speaker 5: You bring them up for a little bit, let them
- 22:19Speaker 5: get their feet wet, you know, bring them up for
- 22:21Speaker 5: maybe a big series to really feel what that's like.
- 22:24Speaker 5: You know, even if they just get some AB's off
- 22:26Speaker 5: the bench, play late defense, whatever, but get them into
- 22:29Speaker 5: games before you need them to.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Rely on them. You know you can't.
- 22:34Speaker 5: It's it's you know, you want your guys to be
- 22:37Speaker 5: able to show up and just hit the ground running.
- 22:38Speaker 5: But that that league, when those lights get bright and
- 22:41Speaker 5: that deck is now three decks instead of two up
- 22:44Speaker 5: above you, and there's music going and it's just a
- 22:47Speaker 5: little different environment. And you know, especially when postseason comes around,
- 22:51Speaker 5: you know, having those reps prior to those situations is
- 22:55Speaker 5: so valuable and it now provides them The clubhouse is intact.
- 23:00Speaker 2: You know who your guys are.
- 23:01Speaker 5: You know, you've got your your catching core, You've got
- 23:03Speaker 5: your guys who've been rotating in the outfield, all those
- 23:05Speaker 5: great things. It's now there's no more thinking of who's
- 23:09Speaker 5: going to be there, there's no worrying looking over your shoulder,
- 23:12Speaker 5: what's going to happen tomorrow, whatever it is.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Everybody can take that breath.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Today, you know, enjoy some barbecue tonight in k C
- 23:19Speaker 5: and and show ready to play tomorrow. And and that's
- 23:22Speaker 5: the beauty of this situation. It's it's not last year
- 23:26Speaker 5: where you turn around and it's like who is who's
- 23:28Speaker 5: on the Twins today? You know, and it's it is
- 23:31Speaker 5: such a weird environment to be and when you show
- 23:34Speaker 5: up during the week and it's like new faces daily,
- 23:36Speaker 5: you know, between all the teams, it's just, uh, it's
- 23:40Speaker 5: a settling again.
- 23:41Speaker 2: It's it's a good feeling to have because it's your guys.
- 23:44Speaker 5: Nothing that you don't have to change, You don't have
- 23:46Speaker 5: to adapt for anybody specifically.
- 23:48Speaker 2: You know, Cramer's going to slide into the rotation. Starters
- 23:50Speaker 2: are kind of in their own world anyways. They're on
- 23:52Speaker 2: their own schedules.
- 23:54Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:54Speaker 5: It's it's now it's the same group that's been vibing
- 23:58Speaker 5: can continue to do what they're doing and just keep
- 24:01Speaker 5: building this momentum. You know, it's they're going to show
- 24:03Speaker 5: up tomorrow excited, you know, knowing that everyone's there. You
- 24:06Speaker 5: know they're not the rotation is not going to have
- 24:09Speaker 5: to adapt to a new guy behind the dish or
- 24:11Speaker 5: a new whoever it is, big personality. I've kind of
- 24:15Speaker 5: said that all along. It's the vibes or the vibes
- 24:17Speaker 5: or they're great, they're great. You know, everything's so perfect, seemingly,
- 24:22Speaker 5: and they kept it intact. They added they're paying some
- 24:24Speaker 5: guys some money. They i mean, everyone kind of helped
- 24:28Speaker 5: exactly true to what they said they were going to do.
- 24:29Speaker 5: And then that's all you can ask for.

- 25:33Speaker 1: In light of last year, this is wild, I mean
- 25:36Speaker 1: fire sale. Yeah, everyone got here. They are buying and
- 25:43Speaker 1: by doing so are saying. The barometer for this season
- 25:47Speaker 1: now is the playoffs, right, Like, you don't you don't
- 25:50Speaker 1: do this if you're not hoping that that's how it ends.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And I was like, I was thinking about the playoff
- 25:56Speaker 1: format earlier today and just the way it works out,
- 25:59Speaker 1: like the AL Central and AL West are competing to
- 26:02Speaker 1: be the number two and number three seed. The winners
- 26:05Speaker 1: of those divisions all the rest of the teams in
- 26:09Speaker 1: that sort of like around five hundred crap shoot are
- 26:11Speaker 1: basically playing to be the number six. See because it
- 26:13Speaker 1: sure looks like Boston, New York and Tampa are going
- 26:15Speaker 1: to be the one of them will win the East
- 26:18Speaker 1: and the other two will be the top two wildcard teams.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And because of the way the format is set up,
- 26:23Speaker 1: like the two top wildcard teams will play each other
- 26:25Speaker 1: and then the winner will play Tampa on the other
- 26:27Speaker 1: side of the bracket, you're going to have the al
- 26:29Speaker 1: Central and West winners fighting it out with the worst wildcard,
- 26:33Speaker 1: which is the one all these teams are in there
- 26:36Speaker 1: running for one of these teams is going to be
- 26:39Speaker 1: in the ALCS.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Like, so.
- 26:43Speaker 1: If that little push makes it that much more likely
- 26:46Speaker 1: that the Twins could be in that position, I mean,
- 26:49Speaker 1: if they can catch the White Sox and get the
- 26:51Speaker 1: number two seed in the Ale they're sitting there waiting
- 26:54Speaker 1: for a wildcard winner in the ALDS, Like, it's not
- 26:56Speaker 1: crazy to think they could be there, and obviously would
- 27:00Speaker 1: be an unbridled success if they got that far, even
- 27:02Speaker 1: if they got swept by Tampa or whoever. But Dan, like, overall,
- 27:07Speaker 1: I none of these moves are gonna you know, like
- 27:12Speaker 1: make people buy twenty thousand season tickets to Target Field tomorrow.
- 27:15Speaker 1: But they made the team better and it might be enough.
- 27:19Speaker 1: They need to make up four games and be four
- 27:21Speaker 1: games better than Chicago and Houston the rest of the way.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Can they do that? It's destiny's in their hands, I think.
- 27:29Speaker 4: I mean, it's conceivable they could do. They play the
- 27:31Speaker 4: White Sox a bunch, They have.
- 27:32Speaker 3: A series there in a series at home, still remaining
- 27:35Speaker 3: with the White Sox. They have Cleveland at home later
- 27:38Speaker 3: this season, so it's definitely conceivable. They got to take
- 27:42Speaker 3: care of business against Kansas City, who try to a
- 27:44Speaker 3: bunch of people this week.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Yeah, right, but not Neck or Noah Cameron unfortunately, so they're.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Screwed the next two nights.
- 27:54Speaker 3: But no, I mean, look, I think that when you
- 27:58Speaker 3: look at it, the real goal was to make fans
- 28:02Speaker 3: interested again, like that's that's step one. Yeah, and make
- 28:06Speaker 3: the players believe in the clubhouse, and that's they accomplished that. Look,
- 28:11Speaker 3: did they make a massive Serik School Baal game? No,
- 28:15Speaker 3: but only few teams did. But did they go out
- 28:19Speaker 3: and do what they said they were gonna do? Absolutely,
- 28:22Speaker 3: and they spent money to do it. They said resources
- 28:24Speaker 3: wouldn't be an issue. They proved that they didn't do
- 28:27Speaker 3: any kind of wins finagling of the past, where they'd
- 28:30Speaker 3: give you a better prospects so you'd pay down the salary.
- 28:33Speaker 4: They said, all right, well we'll take.
- 28:34Speaker 3: On some cash from you, you know, eight point five
- 28:37Speaker 3: million in total. They were willing to surrender good prospects.
- 28:41Speaker 3: But they were willing to do that and know that
- 28:44Speaker 3: this year is more important than four years from now.
- 28:47Speaker 3: And I think that that was the first real chance
- 28:50Speaker 3: to show they had to play catch up. They didn't
- 28:53Speaker 3: do enough in the offseason last year after a very
- 28:55Speaker 3: disappointing end. This is the first step forward that Tom
- 28:59Speaker 3: pull had talked about making a strike, and I think
- 29:01Speaker 3: he did a good job. I don't think it was
- 29:03Speaker 3: like Gangbusters, Oh my god, this is amazing, But I
- 29:06Speaker 3: think they did plenty here to make this team better
- 29:09Speaker 3: and give them a real fighting chance to make the
- 29:11Speaker 3: playoffs and play competitively down the stretch. And that was
- 29:15Speaker 3: always the goal. But I mean, yeah, it's in the cards.
- 29:18Speaker 3: The al Central. I mean, you can definitely see the
- 29:22Speaker 3: other teams got better and Cleveland went out And although
- 29:25Speaker 3: I'm not sure that I like the Joe adell move
- 29:27Speaker 3: too much. But Cleveland got a good start from the Nationals.
- 29:31Speaker 3: They washed the White Sox, got Luis Castillo, and they
- 29:35Speaker 3: strengthened their bullpen Wasscer Braza band. So other teams did
- 29:39Speaker 3: good stuff, but look, the Twins just needed to show
- 29:43Speaker 3: this commitment to fans. This is what they have to
- 29:45Speaker 3: keep doing. This isn't going to be enough on its own.
- 29:48Speaker 3: They're gonna have to do this again in the offseason.
- 29:50Speaker 3: They'll do it again next trade deadline. Then they'll have
- 29:53Speaker 3: to do it again the next offseason. But this was
- 29:56Speaker 3: a good first step and it was a necessary first step,
- 29:59Speaker 3: and I think that that that's really what they needed
- 30:01Speaker 3: to accomplish. And guys, housekeeping is going to kick me
- 30:04Speaker 3: out of this hotel room in exactly one minute, so
- 30:07Speaker 3: I got to bounce.
- 30:08Speaker 4: But no good show. And you guys keep going.
- 30:11Speaker 1: And Joela, we'll talk to Tyler if I can get
- 30:15Speaker 1: him on the camera. There he is, Tyler basically the
- 30:20Speaker 1: same question you like, like see it in. I think
- 30:26Speaker 1: Dan's spot on there, like this was a great first step.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Even if they don't maybe this just doesn't work if
- 30:30Speaker 1: they don't make the playoffs, right, they tried and that
- 30:33Speaker 1: that's got a matter in the clubhouse. I would think, right, oh,
- 30:36Speaker 1: without a doubt.
- 30:36Speaker 5: And so he said, all lot, it's doing nothing is whatever.
- 30:41Speaker 5: You know, you know, you're kind of middling whatever. But
- 30:43Speaker 5: we've kept we've talked on about it so much that
- 30:46Speaker 5: the Central and the whole American League is so wide
- 30:48Speaker 5: open that doing anything was significant because it's just a
- 30:52Speaker 5: little bit of an edge here or there. You know,
- 30:54Speaker 5: it's all the one run games that now are more
- 30:58Speaker 5: winnable because of these additions, and that's the biggest thing.
- 31:02Speaker 5: They've been to come from behind team all year. Now
- 31:05Speaker 5: you have guys that theoretically you could bridge most of
- 31:08Speaker 5: a game if you really needed to. You know, you're
- 31:11Speaker 5: obviously not going to try and do that every day,
- 31:13Speaker 5: but you know, if there's a game, a game where
- 31:15Speaker 5: you know, Joe has a rough four innings but keeps
- 31:17Speaker 5: it close and then you got to keep it close
- 31:19Speaker 5: till the ninth, well, now that's conceivable with each guy
- 31:23Speaker 5: only throwing one inning without having the torch guys in
- 31:25Speaker 5: the bullpen, you know, and having them to be down
- 31:28Speaker 5: for two days.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Things like that.
- 31:29Speaker 5: This stuff matters, and over the next two months of baseball,
- 31:34Speaker 5: you know, as we're talking about the dog days this
- 31:36Speaker 5: summer are here. You know, these young guys who are
- 31:39Speaker 5: settling into bullpen rolls are going to learn what it's
- 31:41Speaker 5: like to pitch when you're not one hundred percent. The
- 31:43Speaker 5: guys they just added have been there and done that,
- 31:46Speaker 5: on top of the guys that have already been there
- 31:48Speaker 5: in LaTroy. Out there, it's it's a great group. They're
- 31:51Speaker 5: going to be able to learn from each other and
- 31:53Speaker 5: feed off of each other. You know, there's and there's
- 31:55Speaker 5: so many questions still between pre Lip what the gorin
- 31:58Speaker 5: end up doing with him. He's a guy that could
- 32:00Speaker 5: end up sliding out there, depending what happens with the rotations.
- 32:04Speaker 2: It's a great spot to be.
- 32:06Speaker 5: I think they have now I won't say a surplus,
- 32:08Speaker 5: but they have a very serviceable bullpen that's out there
- 32:12Speaker 5: and left center, and it's.
- 32:15Speaker 2: What we've really needed all along. You know.
- 32:17Speaker 5: It's and then Kramer kind of bolsters up the starting
- 32:20Speaker 5: rotation to eat up some more of those innings. There's
- 32:23Speaker 5: just a lot of good, lots of positives for the
- 32:27Speaker 5: players in that locker room. You know that the one
- 32:29Speaker 5: I saw some of the day is like Josh Bell
- 32:31Speaker 5: has been traded like the last three deadlines, I think,
- 32:33Speaker 5: and even for a guy like him, he's like, I'm home, Like,
- 32:36Speaker 5: I'm not going anywhere the rest of the year.
- 32:38Speaker 2: My job is my job.
- 32:39Speaker 5: And there's something to be said for that comfortable you know,
- 32:43Speaker 5: that comfortability that you have shown up to the yard
- 32:45Speaker 5: every day knowing that just I'm here, I'm not going anywhere.
- 32:49Speaker 5: And for these guys that got traded, you know, Hoffman's
- 32:51Speaker 5: probably been hearing it from his own fans all season
- 32:54Speaker 5: out there in Toronto, and now they have a place
- 32:56Speaker 5: that welcomes in with open arms. I'm hoping, you know,
- 33:00Speaker 5: hopefully it goes smoothly because we all know what's going
- 33:03Speaker 5: to be said. If not, you know, but it's just
- 33:06Speaker 5: it's a great it's it's inspiring for a clubhouse. You know,
- 33:09Speaker 5: it's a great thing to have happened, you know, because
- 33:11Speaker 5: I was a part of trade deadlines where we got
- 33:14Speaker 5: rid of guys and kind of added but didn't really.
- 33:17Speaker 5: It was just like a weird it was. It was
- 33:19Speaker 5: always like, are we getting better? Are we just getting
- 33:21Speaker 5: really salaries? Yeah, this was strictly adding, and we didn't
- 33:25Speaker 5: care that we're going to spend a little bit more money,
- 33:27Speaker 5: and that's great for everybody.
- 33:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 33:29Speaker 5: It's like you said, making the postseasons great. Win a
- 33:32Speaker 5: game or two there is great.
- 33:34Speaker 3: You know.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Can we say we're gonna win the World Series?
- 33:36Speaker 5: You never know, but for next year even that's something
- 33:39Speaker 5: that fans can hold on to, and i mean we're
- 33:41Speaker 5: watching every game. It's something to hold on to, like, Okay,
- 33:44Speaker 5: we're we're gonna go for this thing, and we're actually
- 33:46Speaker 5: gonna try not just talk about it.
- 33:49Speaker 1: It signals people to pay attention and show up. We'll
- 33:52Speaker 1: see how they actually.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Shower field when the ninth rolls around.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Don't yeah, gosh, do not do that. Do not take
- 33:59Speaker 1: a shower in the night by them in the ninth inning,
- 34:01Speaker 1: especially against the Royals, who segue are the Twins next opponent.
- 34:05Speaker 1: They are off today of course watching the Odyssey. Hope
- 34:07Speaker 1: they had fun Tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday in Kansas City
- 34:10Speaker 1: all night games, Joe Ryan against Randy Dobnik. I'm assuming
- 34:15Speaker 1: them these players have been traded from Kansas City.
- 34:17Speaker 5: So apology, well, there's always that weird dead period where
- 34:20Speaker 5: it's like, you know, they're walking the papers down the hall,
- 34:23Speaker 5: right trade happens, it's like, hold on a second, he's
- 34:26Speaker 5: sending more the cross.
- 34:28Speaker 1: When did that facts come through? Exactly? Let me h.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Dean Kramer's debut, which we talked about on this morning
- 34:35Speaker 1: show is is on Wednesday, and it's Noah, Cameron, Bailey,
- 34:38Speaker 1: Ober and Michael Waka on Thursday close it off and
- 34:41Speaker 1: it gets real tough after that. Milwaukee, Baltimore, although Baltimore
- 34:45Speaker 1: was in cell mode, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. The next four
- 34:48Speaker 1: series for the Twins something telling, telling stretch for sure.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Hopefully Luisa Arrives is the least of the worries unfortunately
- 34:57Speaker 5: in Luis Arrives.
- 34:59Speaker 1: And we also we haven't even talked about that they're
- 35:01Speaker 1: playing at the Field of Dreams, which is cool, but that.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's when is that that this weekend?
- 35:06Speaker 1: That's next next Thursday, a week from Thursday. So we
- 35:09Speaker 1: still have like seventeen shows before then to oh you're
- 35:12Speaker 1: not Dan Hayes, let's put that.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Back seventeen wins.
- 35:16Speaker 3: We are.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Uh, We're gonna put this show, this live hit out
- 35:20Speaker 1: as a podcast Tuesday morning, so that'll be our second
- 35:23Speaker 1: show for the week. We're gonna not do Wednesday because
- 35:26Speaker 1: it's just one game. We'll see you Friday after the
- 35:28Speaker 1: Kansas City series and set up a pretty important weekend
- 35:32Speaker 1: series in Milwaukee. Would sure be nice to show up
- 35:34Speaker 1: well for that. Thank you as always for listening. I
- 35:37Speaker 1: hope you liked our little live experiment here. We thought
- 35:39Speaker 1: we'd try it out for the first time, and we
- 35:42Speaker 1: will catch you next time on Twin City's territory. Thanks everybody,
- 35:45Speaker 1: Bye bye,
