Speaker 4: what do you do you We are back at it today.
• 1:53
Speaker 4: It is back to work for some people today, state government,
• 1:56
Speaker 4: city workers. Most of those back well, I'll say summer
• 2:00
Speaker 4: on the job, because you're going to find a lot
• 2:01
Speaker 4: of people still aren't working today because many people took
• 2:04
Speaker 4: off time for the Christmas break or into the even
• 2:09
Speaker 4: into the new year, so you know, just know that, Yeah,
• 2:13
Speaker 4: the government offices, if you have any business to do,
• 2:15
Speaker 4: are open, but they may be a little short staff.
• 2:18
Speaker 4: So a lot of folks are going to be short
• 2:19
Speaker 4: staffed over the next week or so until we get
• 2:22
Speaker 4: back to normal, which I guess whatever normal is is
• 2:24
Speaker 4: probably going to be probably sometime January sixth or so
• 2:27
Speaker 4: on that Monday. On today's show, We're going to be
• 2:30
Speaker 4: joined a little bit later on by Knawa County commission
• 2:31
Speaker 4: President Lance Wheeler. A little review of the year that
• 2:35
Speaker 4: was twenty twenty four in Kanawha County and a preview
• 2:38
Speaker 4: of twenty twenty five. Some exciting things to talk about
• 2:41
Speaker 4: with commission President wheel And as always, whether I have
• 2:44
Speaker 4: commission President Wheeler on Commissioner Selango or Mark Slotnik, who
• 2:49
Speaker 4: is in that role for now until Natalie Tenant officially
• 2:52
Speaker 4: takes over in the new year. Always open for phone calls,
• 2:55
Speaker 4: always hoping for text. So if you got any questions
• 2:57
Speaker 4: or comments for this time, I recommissioned President Wheeler. He's
• 3:01
Speaker 4: always good about taking your phone calls with concerns or
• 3:05
Speaker 4: praise or not so praiseworthy. Whatever you got, Lance will
• 3:09
Speaker 4: take it coming up a little bit later on the show.
• 3:11
Speaker 4: Also on the show, a little bit later on West
• 3:14
Speaker 4: Virginia Broadcasting Legend, Speedy Bevans is going to join us.
• 3:17
Speaker 4: I don't know whether you know this or not. And
• 3:20
Speaker 4: Speedy and I talk pretty much every morning. He pointed
• 3:24
Speaker 4: this out to me that with twenty twenty five coming
• 3:28
Speaker 4: in next week, we are now a quarter of a
• 3:31
Speaker 4: way into the twenty first century. Remember all the hooplah
• 3:35
Speaker 4: and back in two thousand y two K and so
• 3:37
Speaker 4: on and so forth. So we're gonna spend a little
• 3:40
Speaker 4: time talking to Speedy about that. He's got some interesting
• 3:43
Speaker 4: He always has interesting ideas on stuff. Some of them
• 3:46
Speaker 4: are a little crazy from time to time, but that's okay.
• 3:48
Speaker 4: He's my boss for twenty years, so I can say that.
• 3:50
Speaker 4: But he's going to join us a little bit later
• 3:51
Speaker 4: on the show. I do want to say this. I
• 3:53
Speaker 4: originally had meteorologist Brian Hughes schedule for the show today
• 3:58
Speaker 4: to provide a little winter wet their preview. However, as
• 4:02
Speaker 4: they said on the RADI Bunch, something suddenly came up
• 4:05
Speaker 4: and we're gonna have to reschedule him for another time.
• 4:08
Speaker 4: I will say this though about mister Hughes. Long before
• 4:12
Speaker 4: his weather man days, he was a radio guy and
• 4:15
Speaker 4: for a couple of days this week he is going
• 4:19
Speaker 4: to be guest hosting the Eighties Lunch that we do
• 4:22
Speaker 4: on our sister station, V one hundred, So noe Brian
• 4:25
Speaker 4: Hughes on the show today. We will get him on
• 4:27
Speaker 4: in the near future, but again the next couple of
• 4:30
Speaker 4: days you can catch him on V one hundred. Also
• 4:33
Speaker 4: want to say thank you for all of the positive
• 4:35
Speaker 4: feedback that we got on the annual Jewish Christmas Spectacular
• 4:40
Speaker 4: that we did on Christmas Eve. If you missed it
• 4:43
Speaker 4: and you like to catch it again, It's available various
• 4:45
Speaker 4: locations as all of the shows are on the website
• 4:48

• 4:56
Speaker 4: WCCHS network social media pages as well. However, you get
• 5:00
Speaker 4: your podcast, go back and uh and give it to
• 5:02
Speaker 4: a listen if you if you get time, because we
• 5:06
Speaker 4: have a lot of fun with that show. You know.
• 5:08
Speaker 4: I bring in Mike Pushkin, who is an accomplished musician,
• 5:11
Speaker 4: and he brought Elisha in with him, who is a
• 5:14
Speaker 4: fantastic violinist. Just a little Christmas music. We had Tony
• 5:17
Speaker 4: the Taylor on the show Dale Cooper while was producing
• 5:20
Speaker 4: the show that day. He spent some time on the
• 5:22
Speaker 4: air with us as well. Rich Lindsay Judge Rich Lindsay
• 5:26
Speaker 4: actually sponsored the show, so appreciate Rich being on it.
• 5:29
Speaker 4: And Brian Hughes was on the show on Tuesday as well.
• 5:32
Speaker 4: So if you didn't hear it and you'd like to
• 5:33
Speaker 4: go back, and if you're not done with a holiday
• 5:36
Speaker 4: cheer yet, go back and listen to it. It's available
• 5:39
Speaker 4: at all of the places that I mentioned before, but
• 5:42
Speaker 4: Dave Alan showing five Vidiye Live is bright to you

• 5:50
Speaker 4: They took last night off I understand, but that they
• 5:52
Speaker 4: are back up and running through the through New Year's

• 5:57
Speaker 4: get your tickets in advanced. Blightthnight dot com is the
• 6:02
Speaker 4: website to get your tickets Dbatlightthnight dot com. I want
• 6:06
Speaker 4: to throw this out there just briefly before we get
• 6:09
Speaker 4: to Kanan County commissioned President Lance Wheeler. I was listening
• 6:13
Speaker 4: last hour and Tom Payton does a great job. He
• 6:16
Speaker 4: and his dad on asked the lawyer. We do it
• 6:18
Speaker 4: every Thursday morning at each twenty. Dale Cooper hosted today
• 6:22
Speaker 4: and Tom actually touched on this and it was after
• 6:27
Speaker 4: someone called or someone Yeah, it actually was a phone call.
• 6:31
Speaker 4: It wasn't a text. It was a phone calls to
• 6:32
Speaker 4: the show. And we had some texts about this on
• 6:34
Speaker 4: Monday's show today. And it has to do with President
• 6:40
Speaker 4: Byite commuting the death sentences of several people, including Marshall
• 6:46
Speaker 4: University student Samantha Burns. Now you all remember that horrific story.
• 6:51
Speaker 4: And as I read the text on the air on
• 6:55
Speaker 4: Monday's show, not on Tuesday. We didn't do anything serious,
• 6:58
Speaker 4: you know, we just kind of kept a Christmas related
• 6:59
Speaker 4: on TUESDA. But on Monday show I read the text
• 7:01
Speaker 4: on the air and it was pointed out by several
• 7:04
Speaker 4: textures and I read those texts. But maybe we didn't
• 7:08
Speaker 4: do a good enough job of explaining it and what
• 7:12
Speaker 4: is going on here? And maybe I didn't make it
• 7:14
Speaker 4: clear and I didn't set it up properly whatever is.
• 7:18
Speaker 4: And regardless of how you feel about the commuting of
• 7:23
Speaker 4: several of these cases, and there were a bunch of
• 7:25
Speaker 4: them by President Biden before President Trump takes back over,
• 7:29
Speaker 4: if you will, the Oval Office, it needs to be
• 7:32
Speaker 4: said that President Biden is not pardoning these people and
• 7:38
Speaker 4: in effect setting them free. Far from it. They are
• 7:43
Speaker 4: still going to write in prison. And I say that,
• 7:48
Speaker 4: you know, maybe I should laugh about somebody writing in prison,
• 7:50
Speaker 4: but you know, sometimes I don't really care. But yeah,
• 7:55
Speaker 4: they're still going to write in prison. Okay, They're not
• 7:58
Speaker 4: being released or anything of that nature. And I just
• 8:01
Speaker 4: wanted to throw that out there because I think maybe
• 8:04
Speaker 4: sometimes there was a little confusion over that, and maybe
• 8:06
  Speaker 4: I didn't do a good enough job when I was
• 8:08
Speaker 4: talking about this story. But they are not being released,
• 8:11
Speaker 4: they are not being pardoned. They're just not going to
• 8:13
Speaker 4: be by what the actions of President Biden took. They're
• 8:18
Speaker 4: just not going to be put to death. And and
• 8:23
Speaker 4: you know, you can weigh in and you can argue
• 8:25
Speaker 4: with me, or you can agree with me, whatever you
• 8:27
Speaker 4: choose to do. I don't have a problem with that,
• 8:31
  Speaker 4: And I'll tell you why I don't have a problem
• 8:33
Speaker 4: with it. I don't have a problem with it because
• 8:35
Speaker 4: I think that for some of these more horrific crimes,
• 8:37
Speaker 4: the death penalty if it indeed happens, which the majority
• 8:40
Speaker 4: of the time it doesn't, I think that the death
• 8:43
Speaker 4: penalty may be too good for some of these people.
• 8:47
Speaker 4: I would prefer to see them rot in prison. And
• 8:52
Speaker 4: I kind of liked, and I'm kind of paraphrasing what
• 8:54
Speaker 4: Tom Payton talked about last hour. You know, it gives
• 8:56
Speaker 4: you an opportunity to learn when they're in prison, what
• 8:59
Speaker 4: goes on in their minds, What is it that makes
• 9:03
Speaker 4: people become the animals that some humans do become at times.
• 9:11
Speaker 4: So I wanted to make sure that people realize that.
• 9:13
Speaker 4: And there's been a lot of back and forth, and
• 9:15
Speaker 4: I'm sure in the national media and on social media
• 9:17
Speaker 4: and so on and so forth with people saying, well,
• 9:19
Speaker 4: Biden's letting all these people get No, he's not. And
• 9:22
Speaker 4: I have not always been, you know, I'm not a
• 9:24
Speaker 4: fan of President Joe Biden. Okay, However, in this case,
• 9:28
Speaker 4: I don't have a problem with it. Now we may
• 9:31
Speaker 4: have a bigger issue, as Hobbies talked about, with presidential
• 9:34
Speaker 4: pardons and things in general, and We can have that
• 9:36
Speaker 4: discussion another time, but I have no issue with him
• 9:40
Speaker 4: because I don't think they should be put to death.
• 9:41
Speaker 4: I think they should have to write in prison. That's
• 9:44
Speaker 4: me And in most cases, if you do the research,
• 9:47
Speaker 4: it's a whole lot cheaper to imprison someone for life
• 9:52
Speaker 4: than it is to put them to death, especially when
• 9:55
Speaker 4: you have a lot of appeals and it goes back
• 9:57
Speaker 4: and forth and people spending twenty and thirty years on
• 10:00
Speaker 4: death row, and that money that's used in those cases
• 10:02
Speaker 4: comes from me and you, you know, on behalf of
• 10:05
Speaker 4: the government. So again, as primal as that can be
• 10:11
Speaker 4: at times, and I can be sometimes include myself in that, again,
• 10:16
Speaker 4: I would much rather see them rot in jail as
• 10:20
Speaker 4: opposed to the death penalty, because I think in many
• 10:21
Speaker 4: of these cases the death penalty is quite simply it's
• 10:26
Speaker 4: it's too good for it. But Dave Islands showing five
• 10:29
Speaker 4: eighty Live is brought to you a part by Hustan's Pizza.
• 10:31
Speaker 4: To check out the holiday pack from Huston's. A large
• 10:33
Speaker 4: eighteen inch Huston's Pepperoni pizza, ten breadsticks, twelve hot wings
• 10:36
Speaker 4: and a two liters of PEPSI only thirty three ninety nine.
• 10:39
Speaker 4: My juniores Hustans for delivery, pick up or dine it
• 10:41
Speaker 4: at Huston's Pizza dot Com. Tex says yesterday, they're going
• 10:46
Speaker 4: to rot in prison and joke you taxpayer are going
• 10:49
Speaker 4: to pay to keep them there for the rest of
• 10:51
Speaker 4: their life. I yeah, that's what I said. But go
• 10:54
Speaker 4: back and do the research on how much money it
• 10:56
Speaker 4: cost to keep them on death row in many cases,
• 10:59
Speaker 4: if there are is a p after appeal after appeal,
• 11:02
Speaker 4: that's just kind of where we are. Tex says. The
• 11:05
Speaker 4: families of those victims must be devastated this Christmas. Yeah
• 11:07
Speaker 4: I could. I can. I can see where where they
• 11:12
Speaker 4: would be before we go to break. I do want
• 11:15
Speaker 4: to throw this out there. This is the time, as
• 11:18
Speaker 4: I mentioned earlier, that a lot of people are taking
• 11:20
Speaker 4: off for holiday breaks and so on and so forth,
• 11:23
Speaker 4: including uh in our building as well. So I'm taking
• 11:27
Speaker 4: so much needed time off now. I'm going to be
• 11:30
Speaker 4: in addition to doing this show today, when I leave here,
• 11:33
Speaker 4: I'm going to be doing some time over on Superstar
• 11:36
Speaker 4: Country ninety six to one KWS. Just after eleven this morning,
• 11:39
Speaker 4: I'll be broadcasting live at downtown Ford on Patrick's Street.
• 11:43
Speaker 4: The big end of the year sales event going on.
• 11:44
Speaker 4: I'll be there to tell you all about it. Plus
• 11:46
Speaker 4: we got plenty of KWS swag to give away, so
• 11:50
Speaker 4: stop buy and see me today over downtown Ford on
• 11:52
Speaker 4: Patrick Street starting at eleven o'clock from eleven to one
• 11:55
Speaker 4: on our sister station ninety six to one. K w
• 11:58
Speaker 4: S says, Biden abuse our justice system. I understand he
• 12:03
Speaker 4: commuted and didn't pardon those thirty seven fiends, but each
• 12:06
Speaker 4: of those individuals were charged and convicted by jury of
• 12:08
Speaker 4: their peers to death. I would like to see the
• 12:13
Speaker 4: reintroduction of the capital punishment in West Virginia again, and
• 12:18
Speaker 4: we have the support to pass it. There has been
• 12:21
Speaker 4: a lot of people, a lot of people that says
• 12:25
Speaker 4: that that with this legislature that's coming in, that's it's
• 12:31
Speaker 4: certainly going to be talked about. I don't know whether
• 12:33
Speaker 4: it'll get passed or not, but it's certainly going to
• 12:35
Speaker 4: be talked about. Texas, seventy four something million people voted
• 12:38
Speaker 4: for Donald Trump. It's not shocking that there are dumb
• 12:41
Speaker 4: folks who don't know the difference between commuting a sentence
• 12:45
Speaker 4: and a pardon. Tex says riting in prison on our
• 12:49
Speaker 4: dime and more considerate. Okay, wait a minute, rotting in
• 12:53
Speaker 4: prison or our dime and more considerate than they gave
• 12:56
Speaker 4: their more consideration than they gave their victims. Let's have

• 15:53
Speaker 4: Coming up a little bit later on in the show,
• 15:55
Speaker 4: we are going to speak with the Western Indio Broadcasting Legends. SPEEDE.
• 15:58
Speaker 4: Bevins was served as my boss for over twenty years now.
• 16:04
Speaker 4: I honest say's out of the broadcasting business entirely because
• 16:07
Speaker 4: he still makes appearances on the Metro News Basketball State
• 16:11
Speaker 4: Tournament every March he'll be doing that again, I am
• 16:13
Speaker 4: sure this year, but he's into some other things now.
• 16:16
Speaker 4: And he just came out of left field with something
• 16:18
Speaker 4: with me this morning. I said, you know what, let's
• 16:19
Speaker 4: talk about that on the show. I want to get
• 16:21
Speaker 4: into that a little bit later on. Tex says, even
• 16:23
Speaker 4: with the overwhelming evidence that the death sentence costs more
• 16:26
Speaker 4: taxpayer dollars than life in prison sentences, fiscal conservatives will
• 16:30
Speaker 4: do mental gymnastics to justify state sanctioned executions. It's extra
• 16:36
Speaker 4: Connon County Commission President Lance Wheelers here, mister Commission President,
• 16:39
Speaker 4: Good morning, Marry Christmas. Thanks for being here. Good morning Dave.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: Thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. Trust
• 16:44
Speaker 4: you and the family had a good, good Christmas.
• 16:46
  Speaker 5: We did.
• 16:47
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 16:47
Speaker 3: I was talking to Ron Hughes right when I was
• 16:49
  Speaker 3: coming in here.
• 16:49
Speaker 4: Well okay, that's strike one right there, but go ahead,
• 16:51
  Speaker 4: and I.
• 16:52
Speaker 3: Was telling him, you know, we've got my three year
• 16:54
Speaker 3: old daughter, Aubrey, and this is kind of her first
• 16:56
Speaker 3: Christmas that she's really realizing what Christmas is, right, but
• 16:59
Speaker 3: she doesn't know about the presence that Santa Claus is bringing.
• 17:02
Speaker 3: And so for the last twenty five days, this has
• 17:03
Speaker 3: been about the lights, the elf on the shelf, this
• 17:06
Speaker 3: has been about the tree, it's been about family, and
• 17:09
Speaker 3: so I've really been absorbing that in the last twenty
• 17:11
Speaker 3: five days, really, you know, taking this in because I
• 17:13
Speaker 3: know when she gets about five or six, it's going
• 17:15
Speaker 3: to be what Santa Claus bringing me for twenty five
• 17:18
Speaker 3: days straight. But this time is something that I've you know,
• 17:21
Speaker 3: I realized, I want to make sure I absorb this
• 17:23
Speaker 3: and take in every moment. And it's just been it's
• 17:25
Speaker 3: been glorious. I love every moment.
• 17:26
Speaker 4: And we were Jeff did a story on all the
• 17:29
Speaker 4: light displays in the area. Of course we've got you know,
• 17:31
Speaker 4: the slangled all Light the Night that's actually going to
• 17:33
Speaker 4: continue through I think New Year's Night. But what's going
• 17:37
Speaker 4: on at Coonskin and the Festival of Lights in Saint
• 17:40
Speaker 4: Albans And I know then where I live in Putnam County,
• 17:42
Speaker 4: there's been all kinds of things going on there as well.
• 17:44
Speaker 4: If you want to see Christmas lights in Canal Valley
• 17:46
Speaker 4: is the place to be.
• 17:47
Speaker 3: It really is, you know, And we talked about that.
• 17:49
Speaker 3: You know, when I was a kid growing up that
• 17:52
Speaker 3: was kind of coming out of this area and Unfortunately
• 17:54
Speaker 3: for a long time we didn't have those events, and
• 17:56
Speaker 3: so to be able to bring those back and see
• 17:58
Speaker 3: those kids have those men that I remember the very
• 18:01
Speaker 3: end of it back here in Connall County, I think
• 18:04
Speaker 3: it's great and I think we're going to be able
• 18:06
Speaker 3: to continue to do things like that, provide those events
• 18:09
Speaker 3: that people can, you know, bring their kids out and
• 18:11
Speaker 3: get those memories. I think that's important to community and
• 18:13
Speaker 3: I think it's important to what we're doing right now.
• 18:16
Speaker 4: Talking with the Canaha County Commission President Lance Wheeler, I
• 18:19
Speaker 4: want to talk about the year that was twenty twenty
• 18:21
Speaker 4: four for the Canaha County Commission, some of the projects,
• 18:24
Speaker 4: some of the things that were achieved by the Commission
• 18:27
Speaker 4: and the county in general in twenty twenty four.
• 18:30
Speaker 3: Yeah. So, you know, this is the first year that
• 18:31
Speaker 3: I came on as the Kennall County Commission President, and
• 18:34
Speaker 3: I wouldn't say that I'm proud of the things that
• 18:36
Speaker 3: we've done. You know, we, just like everyone else, have
• 18:39
Speaker 3: seen the effects of inflation, you know, the prices of
• 18:41
Speaker 3: everything going up, and that really put a strain on
• 18:44
Speaker 3: our budget. So we were able to go in there
• 18:46
Speaker 3: be very meticulous and look at how can we save
• 18:49
Speaker 3: money taxpayer money while still continuing to do the same services.
• 18:53
Speaker 3: And we were able to do that. You know, we
• 18:54
Speaker 3: were able to pass a flat budget. But not only
• 18:57
Speaker 3: were we able to pass a flat budget, we were
• 18:59
Speaker 3: able to do a multiple of projects. Whether it's water sewer,
• 19:04
Speaker 3: whether it's recreation activity, whether it's our first responders. You know,
• 19:09
Speaker 3: we did a lot of things to be able to
• 19:11
Speaker 3: upgrade the infrastructure that was drastically needed to be upgraded,
• 19:15
Speaker 3: while also being fiscally conservative, passing a balance budget and
• 19:19
Speaker 3: making sure that we're using every dime appropriately of our
• 19:23
Speaker 3: taxpayer money. You know, we did six water projects. That's
• 19:26
Speaker 3: a lot that's over one thousand homes that we'll be
• 19:30
Speaker 3: having water once we get to bid and construction because
• 19:32
Speaker 3: those do take time. We just recently appropriated money for
• 19:35
Speaker 3: a sewer project out in Tornado that's going to go
• 19:38
Speaker 3: over to one hundred and twenty five homes and then
• 19:41
Speaker 3: the second phase is going to go to an additional
• 19:43
Speaker 3: four hundred homes. You know, this is these are things
• 19:46
Speaker 3: that we need to be involved in, that we need
• 19:48
Speaker 3: to do, but they cost money and so for us
• 19:51
Speaker 3: as a count of commission with Commissioner slot and it
• 19:52
Speaker 3: Commissioner slang Goo myself being able to dive deep into
• 19:56
Speaker 3: a budget, find those cost savings that is taxpayer mone
• 20:00
Speaker 3: money again and then be able to use that money
• 20:02
Speaker 3: into services that we felt like a good a need
• 20:06
Speaker 3: here in the Canall Valley. I think that it's something
• 20:08
Speaker 3: important and something that you know, I want to be
• 20:10
Speaker 3: proud of that we were able to do here in
• 20:12
  Speaker 3: twenty twenty four.
• 20:13
Speaker 4: And I know something that you have been a very
• 20:16
Speaker 4: big part of along with the Commission. But this has
• 20:18
Speaker 4: kind of been one of the things you've been on
• 20:20
Speaker 4: the show talking about a lot. That's the Hat Film
• 20:21
Speaker 4: McCoy trail. Yeah, and the expansion.
• 20:23
Speaker 3: You know, I think that's something that we're going to
• 20:25
Speaker 3: really be hearing a lot more. Hatfil McCoy obviously partner
• 20:29
Speaker 3: with the Kannall County Commission in the largest dirt bike
• 20:32
Speaker 3: trail system east of the Mississippi, right here in Kannall
• 20:35
Speaker 3: County in Tornado, And you know, we're going to be
• 20:38
Speaker 3: marketing that we haven't even market it yet, and we're
• 20:39
Speaker 3: getting hundreds and hundreds of people coming in from Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
• 20:43
Speaker 3: New York, South Carolina, North Carolina, the list goes on.
• 20:47
Speaker 3: You know, having these people come here, spend their hard
• 20:49
Speaker 3: earned money right here in Kannall County at small businesses,
• 20:52
Speaker 3: staying in the hotels. I think that's one of the
• 20:55
Speaker 3: multiple facets of when you look at economic development, is
• 20:58
Speaker 3: having those amenities, not just for tourism, Dave, but also
• 21:02
Speaker 3: for the community. You know, we talk about here in
• 21:05
Speaker 3: the state, we need to bring more people here to
• 21:06
Speaker 3: West Virginia. We need we have a beautiful state. They
• 21:09
Speaker 3: just need to see it well. The way to do
• 21:11
Speaker 3: that is having those amenities. If you ever to think
• 21:13
Speaker 3: that I'm going to move my job and take a
• 21:16
Speaker 3: job somewhere else out of the area that I'm familiar with,
• 21:19
Speaker 3: what's the first thing you're going to do, Dave. If
• 21:20
Speaker 3: you have kids, you're going to look at things that
• 21:22
Speaker 3: are doing in that area. So having the Selango Lights,
• 21:25
Speaker 3: having the Coonskin Christmas at Coonskin, having the hat Film
• 21:28
Speaker 3: McCoy trails. You know, when you start looking at that
• 21:31
Speaker 3: and saying, you know what, that's a place I do
• 21:33
Speaker 3: want to live. That's a place that I want to
• 21:35
Speaker 3: grow with my children. Those are the amenities that I
• 21:38
Speaker 3: think is the unseen facet of economic development. So when
• 21:42
Speaker 3: we start bringing in job creators, you know, developers, businesses
• 21:47
Speaker 3: and saying hey, let's market to Kanall County. We want
• 21:50
Speaker 3: your business, the first thing they're going to do is
• 21:52
Speaker 3: they're going to say, how can we get the workforce
• 21:55
Speaker 3: to come in here. So we're not going to be
• 21:57
Speaker 3: able to get a wall from Kennall County and from
• 21:59
Speaker 3: the state of Westvirginia. We're going to have to bring
• 22:01
Speaker 3: some of our leadership in. What will we be able
• 22:04
Speaker 3: to entice them? And I think doing these little amenities though,
• 22:08
Speaker 3: is a small piece of that pie, is important, and
• 22:11
Speaker 3: I think we were able to do that in the
• 22:12
Speaker 3: County Commission. You know, just this year we rebatalize our
• 22:15
Speaker 3: Kenall County CBB Conventions Visitors Bureau. I think that's important
• 22:18
Speaker 3: because we start we need to start looking at how
• 22:20
Speaker 3: can we continue to advertise tourism and bringing people here.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: You know, my neighbors just recently moved in Dave right
• 22:28
Speaker 3: next to me, and we asked him and said, hey,
• 22:30
Speaker 3: where are you from. They said, We're from out of state.
• 22:32
Speaker 3: So what chose Charles so much Virginia? They said, Well,
• 22:35
Speaker 3: we googled it and we loved all the things that
• 22:37
  Speaker 3: were available.
• 22:40
Speaker 4: And I think that's part of it is too, is
• 22:42
Speaker 4: because people talk about the jobs. Of course, the jobs
• 22:44
Speaker 4: is what's going to bring people to any area. But
• 22:47
Speaker 4: people only work so many hours a day, and if
• 22:50
Speaker 4: you're a family, you're going to look into well, even
• 22:54
Speaker 4: if you're not a part of a family, but just
• 22:55
Speaker 4: a single person, you're going to look and say, what
• 22:58
Speaker 4: else is there going on in the area area other
• 23:01
Speaker 4: than just the job. Because I'm only I'm gonna get
• 23:03
Speaker 4: off work at five o'clock. I don't have you know,
• 23:04
Speaker 4: I don't work on weekends or something. I need something
• 23:06
Speaker 4: else to do. That's where a lot of these things
• 23:08
Speaker 4: that's the selling point. And I think that sometime we
• 23:11
Speaker 4: as a state West Virginia, over the years, have sold
• 23:15
Speaker 4: ourselves short by not really pushing those things out. Yeah
• 23:18
Speaker 4: and explain it. Okay, you got the job, Okay, but
• 23:21
Speaker 4: here's what else we got, and you push whether it's
• 23:24
Speaker 4: the arts or whether you know things in this area
• 23:26
Speaker 4: like Capital Market or you mentioned the parks or things
• 23:29
Speaker 4: of that nature, the baseball team, you know, the proposed
• 23:31
Speaker 4: sports complex, these other things that are also selling points.
• 23:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look at what we did at Coonskin
• 23:37
Speaker 3: with our uh Coonskin short course. You know, it's nine
• 23:40
Speaker 3: holes part three. It's a short course obviously, and one
• 23:44
Speaker 3: of the intentions of doing that and going in with
• 23:46
Speaker 3: that investment was because you can have a younger kid
• 23:50
Speaker 3: play and I get phone calls from friends and constituents
• 23:54
Speaker 3: all the time saying thank you for putting this in.
• 23:57
Speaker 3: I'm able to go on a weekend and take mine
• 23:59
Speaker 3: nine year old son, my eight year old daughter out
• 24:02
Speaker 3: golfing with me, and they're enjoying the sport with me,
• 24:05
Speaker 3: and this is something that's very important to me, and
• 24:08
Speaker 3: it's important that I have that relationship with them, and
• 24:10
Speaker 3: so they're able to do this every weekend and just
• 24:12
Speaker 3: have that family time. I think those are the little
• 24:15
Speaker 3: things that we need to make sure we focus on.
• 24:17
Speaker 3: And I think if we look back of what we
• 24:19
Speaker 3: did as a kind of commission is looking at how
• 24:22
Speaker 3: can we best use the taxpayer money fiscally responsible in
• 24:26
Speaker 3: these actoor outdoor recreation that is focused on family. And
• 24:30
Speaker 3: you know, we had Jarrett Tencher, who is the from Elkview.
• 24:35
Speaker 3: He's a national champion in dirt bike racing eight years
• 24:39
Speaker 3: old and he is going to the Hatful McCoy trails,
• 24:43
Speaker 3: and when he came to our river cutting, he told me,
• 24:45
Speaker 3: he said, this is amazing. I have this is mine.
• 24:48
Speaker 3: Now I can go to Nevada and my championship race
• 24:51
Speaker 3: and tell my friends and you know, the other racers.
• 24:54
Speaker 3: I have this in my backyard, backyard, and I think
• 24:57
Speaker 3: that that's important for those memory and also in you know,
• 25:01
Speaker 3: bringing people here to West Virginia and more importantly bringing
• 25:04
Speaker 3: them here to Kennack County.
• 25:05
Speaker 4: Talking with Kenaw County Commission President of Lance Wheeler, do
• 25:07
Speaker 4: they valance showing five any live is brought to part
• 25:09
Speaker 4: by Pinnacle Consultants. Their lead paint Inspection and Risk Assessment
• 25:13
Speaker 4: services are designed to identify and to assess the presence
• 25:15
Speaker 4: of lead based paints and buildings and other structures using
• 25:18
Speaker 4: a three phase approach of inspection, sampling, the lab analysis,
• 25:21
Speaker 4: and an assessment report. Visit Pinnacle court dot net. Because
• 25:24
Speaker 4: what you don't know can hurt you, Tex says, why
• 25:27
Speaker 4: does the county commission only have three members? Seams should
• 25:30
Speaker 4: be five or seven with the population here, smallest county
• 25:33
Speaker 4: commission than any place I've ever lived before.
• 25:36
Speaker 3: Well, the state has said that there are three county
• 25:38
Speaker 3: commissioners about twenty years ago. I want to say my time.
• 25:42
Speaker 3: It might be wrong. The state legislator said that they
• 25:44
Speaker 3: county can move to five, and I think we have
• 25:46
Speaker 3: two counties currently that five county commissions.
• 25:49
Speaker 4: I was thinking that Wood County had five. I might
• 25:50
Speaker 4: be wrong about that.
• 25:51
  Speaker 3: It's I believe it's monic. No, it's not money. Go
• 25:54
Speaker 3: Berkeley County is one and might be Jefferson's the second line. Okay,
• 25:59
Speaker 3: but you know we have three. Uh, you know there's
• 26:02
Speaker 3: always something we can look into. I don't know how
• 26:04
Speaker 3: many more politicians we want. I think that's the question
• 26:08
Speaker 3: I would ask, as a politician, how many more elected
• 26:11
Speaker 3: officials do we need? How many more races do we need?
• 26:14
Speaker 4: But I'm glad to hear you say politician because I
• 26:16
Speaker 4: have so many lance I have so many political figures
• 26:18
Speaker 4: on the show that they'll say I'm not a politician,
• 26:21
Speaker 4: Like the minute you sign your name on the dotted line,
• 26:23
  Speaker 4: you're a politician.
• 26:24
  Speaker 3: Look, I recognize that I'm a politician. I hope to
• 26:28
Speaker 3: be a different type of politician than you know, one
• 26:31
  Speaker 3: that's perceived. I want to be one that's transparent. I
• 26:33
Speaker 3: want to be one that's always has an open door.
• 26:35
Speaker 3: Policy and answering questions. Honestly, just like we got from
• 26:38
Speaker 3: that that Texter. Uh, you know, we'd something that if
• 26:41
Speaker 3: the public would be interested in having five county commissioners,
• 26:44
Speaker 3: we would obviously be you know, interested in seeing what
• 26:47
Speaker 3: that would look like. But you know, having threes a
• 26:49
Speaker 3: lot already. H And I'm proud to have the three
• 26:52
Speaker 3: that I've been able to serve with with Commissioner Slotnik
• 26:55
  Speaker 3: and Commissioner Slango.
• 26:57
  Speaker 6: Uh.
• 26:57
Speaker 3: You know, we we tend to get along, not all
• 26:59
Speaker 3: the time. You know, everybody has differences, but that doesn't
• 27:02
Speaker 3: mean that you're not friends. So you know, I'm proud
• 27:04
  Speaker 3: to be.
• 27:05
  Speaker 4: A Differences aren't always bad.
• 27:06
Speaker 3: You know, you're supposed to have difference. I mean, why
• 27:08
  Speaker 3: there's three.
• 27:09
Speaker 4: And you're going to be adding I want to get
• 27:10
Speaker 4: into this. You're going to be adding a new county
• 27:12
Speaker 4: commission Natalie Tenant was sworn in and will join you
• 27:15
Speaker 4: and Commissioner Silango, the first ever female commission commissioner in
• 27:20
Speaker 4: in Kanawa County. I'm sure you're welcoming her aboard as well.
• 27:22
  Speaker 9: Oh.
• 27:22
Speaker 3: Absolutely, you know, we had staff has been working with her.
• 27:25
Speaker 3: She's really starting to understand exactly everything with the County Commission.
• 27:29
Speaker 3: You know, she has a lot of experience with Secretary
• 27:30
Speaker 3: of State, yeah, being there for as long as she was,
• 27:33
Speaker 3: but county Commission, especially the largest county commission of the
• 27:36
Speaker 3: state of West Virginia, it's like drinking water from a
• 27:38
Speaker 3: fire hydrant. It's a lot of information at once, and
• 27:41
Speaker 3: so she's really taken it on.
• 27:42
Speaker 4: And I wanted to say a word about Commissioner Slotnik.
• 27:45
Speaker 4: You know, when Can't Carper resigned, Mark was named to
• 27:48
Speaker 4: the Commission and agreed to finish out the Carper term.
• 27:51
Speaker 4: Did not you know, did not run for the for
• 27:53
Speaker 4: the position. He made it clear I think pretty much
• 27:55
Speaker 4: from day one that he he was going to serve
• 27:57
Speaker 4: out the term and that was going to be it.
• 27:59
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 27:59
Speaker 4: But I think he should be applauded for his service
• 28:02
Speaker 4: for what he did there.
• 28:03
Speaker 3: You know, Mark Slotnik, Commissioner Slotnik, you know, was interested
• 28:08
Speaker 3: in serving in that position. I think it was something
• 28:12
Speaker 3: that Commissioner Slango and I knew immediately that that was
• 28:14
Speaker 3: the person to do it. You know, he had the
• 28:16
Speaker 3: experience of being there for i want to say, thirty
• 28:19
Speaker 3: eight years at the County Commission, all the way from
• 28:21
Speaker 3: being a polief started as an intern. You know, he
• 28:24
Speaker 3: has all of the information of how things are ran.
• 28:27
Speaker 3: You know, he's our county attorney before that. He knows
• 28:31
Speaker 3: the decisions and the advice and we respected him for that.
• 28:35
Speaker 3: So having him come in and be able to be there,
• 28:37
Speaker 3: especially for the election. You know, there is nobody that
• 28:40
Speaker 3: knows more about election law than Commissioner Slotnik. And so
• 28:44
Speaker 3: when we had him there during the general and we
• 28:46
Speaker 3: had our little snafu with the data stick, having him
• 28:50
Speaker 3: next to me working with me to get us through
• 28:53
Speaker 3: that was very beneficial and I was proud to have
• 28:57
Speaker 3: him there and we'll keep him on. I think he
• 28:59
Speaker 3: wants to continue to to be the county attorney and
• 29:03
Speaker 3: we would love to have.
• 29:04
Speaker 4: Them tex says Dave Big. Thanks to Kanah County and
• 29:06
Speaker 4: specifically Parks and Golf Director Jeff Hutchinson for hosting the
• 29:09
Speaker 4: PGA Hope Program, a free golf therapy clinic for veterans
• 29:13
Speaker 4: at Coon Scan a big bed hope. The program grows
• 29:15
Speaker 4: and even more veterans participate in the spring.
• 29:17
Speaker 3: It's about community, It's about doing things that's going to
• 29:20
Speaker 3: give back. You know, I say I'm a politician, Well,
• 29:24
Speaker 3: what is the politician politician supposed to be somebody that
• 29:26
Speaker 3: represents the constituents they serve and being able to give
• 29:29
Speaker 3: back to them, especially those who served our country and
• 29:34
Speaker 3: protected us. They deserve everything we can give back to them,
• 29:38
Speaker 3: and being able to do things like that. That's just
• 29:40
Speaker 3: one of those little things that you don't get to
• 29:41
Speaker 3: say on a newspaper, you know, you don't get to
• 29:44
Speaker 3: say that with an interview. But the fact that the
• 29:46
Speaker 3: text were brought that up is weld appreciate that.
• 29:48
Speaker 4: Let's talk about the year of twenty twenty five. What's
• 29:50
Speaker 4: on their arrives for the Canawh County Commission.
• 29:53
Speaker 3: Well, you know, politicians want to come in from a
• 29:55
Speaker 3: microphone and say that we've got great things and we're
• 29:58
Speaker 3: going to do everything different. Look, you know, I'm proud
• 30:01
Speaker 3: of what this kind of commission's done, you know, and
• 30:03
Speaker 3: we're going to continue to be efficient and have good government.
• 30:06
Speaker 3: We're going to continue to look at how we can
• 30:07
Speaker 3: save taxpayer money so we can shift that money into
• 30:11
Speaker 3: other services that we're able to provide. But you know,
• 30:14
Speaker 3: it's about infrastructure, it's about continuing what we've already started,
• 30:18
Speaker 3: what we started in the year twenty twenty four, isn't over.
• 30:21
Speaker 3: It's not done. We have a lot more work to do.
• 30:25
Speaker 3: There's a lot more infrastructure, including sewers I mentioned previously
• 30:28
Speaker 3: when your show, But we need to look at economic development.
• 30:31
Speaker 3: You know, we've done a lot for the recreational but
• 30:34
Speaker 3: now it's time to work with the state. I'm excited
• 30:37
Speaker 3: to work with Governor elect Patrick Morsey. You know, if
• 30:40
Speaker 3: there's one thing I know about Patrick Morrissey, he's a winner,
• 30:43
Speaker 3: and he's going to find a way to really bring
• 30:45
Speaker 3: in businesses and jobs, not just here to state of
• 30:48
Speaker 3: West Virginia, but here in Karnall County. And we need
• 30:50
Speaker 3: to make sure that what we've already built with our
• 30:52
Speaker 3: amenities and our golf courses and our dirt bike trails
• 30:56
Speaker 3: enticing those individuals to move here, we now need to
• 30:59
Speaker 3: do that on the bi inside of it. So I'm
• 31:01
Speaker 3: looking forward to working with him and his administration. I'm
• 31:04
Speaker 3: looking forward to doing great things here in Kannall County,
• 31:06
Speaker 3: saving more taxpayer money and looking at what services we
• 31:10
Speaker 3: can continue to be more efficient and actually be better at.
• 31:13
Speaker 3: You know, when I started in twenty twenty, the first
• 31:15
Speaker 3: thing I realized was our demolition of dilapidated structures program
• 31:18
Speaker 3: was abysmal. We were barely doing anything at the time,
• 31:21
Speaker 3: and so we got the ARP money that came in,
• 31:24
Speaker 3: found out it was eligible for demolition of dilapidated structures,
• 31:27
Speaker 3: put a million dollars to it, and we have been
• 31:30
Speaker 3: moving so quickly. The state has actually recognized that we
• 31:34
Speaker 3: may be doing more than any other county. We're kind
• 31:37
Speaker 3: of the pilot program from them, and we've been successful.
• 31:40
Speaker 3: Just this year here in twenty twenty four, we've been
• 31:43
Speaker 3: able to demolish over one hundred and fifty dilapidated structures
• 31:48
Speaker 3: and that's a lot. And so what I wanted to
• 31:50
Speaker 3: know though, was as a politician, is how is that
• 31:53
  Speaker 3: affecting us?
• 31:54
  Speaker 4: Right?
• 31:54
Speaker 3: Well, one of the things that I always used to
• 31:56
Speaker 3: see was vacant fire structures. How many of these vacant
• 32:01
Speaker 3: buildings were catching on fire and we were using resources
• 32:04
Speaker 3: with our fire department and Metro nam on one and
• 32:06
Speaker 3: all of our first responders just to take out a
• 32:09
Speaker 3: vacant fire of a dilapidated structure. Well, we looked back
• 32:12
Speaker 3: to the numbers and we see that this year, compared
• 32:15
Speaker 3: to when we first started this program, vacant fires are
• 32:18
Speaker 3: down thirty percent that's significant. It is that's less resources,
• 32:23
Speaker 3: that's less times that we're putting the lives of our
• 32:25
Speaker 3: first responders at risk because they're going out to take
• 32:28
Speaker 3: care of a vacant fire that they may get caught
• 32:30
Speaker 3: up on, or a neighbor's house might catch on fire
• 32:33
Speaker 3: or damage it. And so being able to do those
• 32:36
Speaker 3: things and then seeing the results of them, it really
• 32:39
Speaker 3: means a lot. And that just gives me the accomplishment
• 32:42
Speaker 3: and the exciting factor to be able to move forward
• 32:45
Speaker 3: here in twenty twenty five. Continue to do what we're doing,
• 32:48
Speaker 3: look at how we can do more things. You know,
• 32:51
Speaker 3: I've got one idea. Let's start cleaning up the county.
• 32:54
Speaker 3: I found a vacuum cleaner that you can pull with
• 32:56
Speaker 3: the trailer and it's got a big old hose on
• 32:59
Speaker 3: it that you can just drive through the streets and
• 33:02
Speaker 3: pick up trash. It's it's affordable, it's easy to do,
• 33:06
Speaker 3: and it's something that the people can see and it's
• 33:08
Speaker 3: something that we can continue to work. Now. It's not
• 33:11
Speaker 3: going to be done in day one. Sure, yeah, you know,
• 33:13
Speaker 3: it's going to take time. But if we're able to
• 33:15
Speaker 3: do that, especially in the eastern part of the County
• 33:16
Speaker 3: where I think this is needed the most. I think
• 33:19
Speaker 3: that's doing good gestures like that, whether it's from the public,
• 33:22
Speaker 3: the private, or the you know, the government. It just
• 33:26
Speaker 3: it's contagious. And so when you start seeing that the
• 33:29
Speaker 3: street that you live on is a little cleaner because
• 33:31
Speaker 3: that dilapidated building isn't there anymore, you have this tendency.
• 33:35
Speaker 3: You know what I think. I want to. I want
• 33:37
Speaker 3: to I want to fix up my house. It's that
• 33:39
Speaker 3: my neighbor's mown is grassed, so now I need to
• 33:41
Speaker 3: move mine, and I.
• 33:42
Speaker 4: Kind of commissioned President Lance Wheeler. I hope you and

• 38:10
Speaker 4: as we prepare ahead into the new year. Believe it
• 38:12
Speaker 4: or not, the twenty first century is now a quarter
• 38:15
Speaker 4: of the way done. And remember all the hooplah about
• 38:18
Speaker 4: Y two K that everyone panics about and turned out
• 38:20
Speaker 4: to be pretty much nothing. I remember it well. So
• 38:23
Speaker 4: this begs the question as old guys like me look
• 38:26
Speaker 4: back and think how things used to be and how
• 38:29
Speaker 4: much better things were back in my day. And by
• 38:31
Speaker 4: the way, to anyone listening who's under thirty, trust me,
• 38:34
Speaker 4: you will one day, like all of us, say things
• 38:38
Speaker 4: were so much better back then. You will may not
• 38:39
Speaker 4: be true, but you'll say it. Think you won't, but
• 38:42
Speaker 4: you will. So back to where we are now and
• 38:46
Speaker 4: where you were, think about how much the world has
• 38:49
Speaker 4: changed since the year two thousand as opposed to today.

• 39:09
Speaker 9: The show you get Dave, thank you for having me on.
• 39:11
Speaker 9: Good morning to you. You know, as I was thinking
• 39:13
Speaker 9: about that, it just downed on me. When Dick Clark
• 39:16
Speaker 9: was my age, how many stay up till midnight on
• 39:20
  Speaker 9: New Year's Eve?
• 39:21
Speaker 4: I was just having a talk on his way out
• 39:23
Speaker 4: door with Lance wheel Or. He said, you got any
• 39:25
Speaker 4: plans for New Year's Eve? I said, yeah. My plan
• 39:27
Speaker 4: is to fall asleep on the couch about nine thirty
• 39:29
Speaker 4: or ten, and at about eleven fifty five look over
• 39:32
Speaker 4: to my wife Elbor and say, wake up, the ball's dropping.
• 39:36
Speaker 4: And that's pretty much what New Year's e will be
• 39:38
  Speaker 4: in my house.
• 39:40
Speaker 9: That's the way it's been with me for a number
• 39:43
Speaker 9: of years. So you know, when Matt, your producer, called
• 39:46
Speaker 9: me uh to set up the phone call, I was wondering,
• 39:50
Speaker 9: does Matt know what why to Kate is? And the
• 39:55
Speaker 9: potential panic that why t K spread throughout the world.
• 40:01
  Speaker 4: I don't know, Murphy.
• 40:02
Speaker 5: I'm a little older than I sound, so not only
• 40:05
Speaker 5: do I remember, but I lived it all right.
• 40:08
Speaker 4: Well, it's kind of funny because I share an office
• 40:11
Speaker 4: with two people upstairs, and one of them Leah. I said,
• 40:13
Speaker 4: So Leah, humor me how old were you in two thousand?
• 40:16
Speaker 4: She said, I was one. I said, well, that's good,
• 40:18
  Speaker 4: that's that's awesome. I'm going to go now, I'm going
• 40:20
Speaker 4: to go eat shards of glass. But so seedy. You
• 40:23
Speaker 4: and I talked earlier today, and I guess I really
• 40:26
Speaker 4: hadn't thought about it till you brought it up. But
• 40:27
Speaker 4: with twenty twenty five coming then, we are now at
• 40:30
Speaker 4: the quarter century mark of the twenty first century, and
• 40:34
Speaker 4: you posed this question to me, what were you doing
• 40:38
Speaker 4: back in two thousand that you aren't doing so much
• 40:41
Speaker 4: these days? And how much has the world changed since then?
• 40:45
Speaker 4: I was talking to another person in the office of there,
• 40:47
Speaker 4: Ron Hughes. You know, social media, at least as we
• 40:50
Speaker 4: know it now, It was around a little back then,
• 40:53
Speaker 4: but it certainly was nothing like what we have now.
• 40:55
Speaker 4: People were still watching DVDs at the time. You have
• 41:00
Speaker 4: the idea, I'll let you kind of take it from there.
• 41:03
Speaker 9: Okay, My email address was compu serve, right, yes see,
• 41:08
Speaker 9: that was at coffee Serve dot com. Right right, right,
• 41:12
Speaker 9: all right, let's throw this question out. Maybe producer Matt
• 41:16
  Speaker 9: to the weigh.
• 41:17
  Speaker 2: In on this.
• 41:18
Speaker 9: Uh, those who still have the Aol email address like
• 41:21
Speaker 9: Dave Allen DoD AOL dot com. What does the AOL
• 41:25
  Speaker 9: stand for?
• 41:26
  Speaker 4: I know it's America Online. Okay, yeah, but I don't
• 41:30
Speaker 4: know how but people, some people still have AOL addresses though,
• 41:33
Speaker 4: I mean I still see them from time to time.
• 41:36
Speaker 9: Yes, yes, people still have the AOL address. I think
• 41:39
Speaker 9: coffee serve was gobbled up by AOL at some point.
• 41:44
Speaker 9: But but yeah, how many people for Christmas got a
• 41:49
  Speaker 9: desktop computer?
• 41:52
Speaker 4: Do they even make desktop computers anymore? I mean, I
• 41:54
Speaker 4: know they obviously have them for offices, I mean to
• 41:57
Speaker 4: a certain extent, but even less and less of those.
• 41:59
Speaker 4: I mean, you see a lot of people. I mean
• 42:01
Speaker 4: I carry a laptop every day. Also I do have
• 42:03
Speaker 4: a desktop computer. But how many? But that's for work?
• 42:06
Speaker 4: How many people have desktop computers at home?
• 42:08
  Speaker 2: Now?
• 42:09
Speaker 4: Like you said, not a whole lot.
• 42:11
Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't know if anyone a best Buy or
• 42:17
Speaker 9: a Circuit City, Circuit City and advertiser, can.
• 42:20
Speaker 4: I mention them they actually are going to sponsor I
• 42:22
Speaker 4: think something on the show next year sort a circuit City.
• 42:24
Speaker 9: Oh, very very good, very good. But you go into
• 42:28
Speaker 9: a best Buy, you don't see desktop computers?
• 42:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you're absolutely right about and most people, or
• 42:35
Speaker 4: at least a lot of people I know, their computer
• 42:38
Speaker 4: is on that little thing that they keep in their pocket.
• 42:41
Speaker 4: It's you see more and more people that don't, that
• 42:43
  Speaker 4: don't even have a computer anymore. They don't they don't
• 42:46
Speaker 4: need one. You know, they use their phone for every
• 42:48
Speaker 4: I know a lot of people that use the phone
• 42:50
  Speaker 4: for everything.
• 42:52
Speaker 9: So things we were doing when we were partying, like
• 42:55
Speaker 9: it's nineteen ninety nine. I'll give you an example, like
• 42:59
Speaker 9: every more I saw by there's a parmar near me,
• 43:04
Speaker 9: saw by parmer, I grab an AHD Media publication. I
• 43:08
Speaker 9: will go to Starbucks a cup of coffee and read
• 43:12
Speaker 9: the Gazette or the Herald Dispatch. Last week a gentleman
• 43:15
Speaker 9: came in with his tablet, put his tablet down, got
• 43:19
Speaker 9: his coffee, and he looked at me and he said,
• 43:21
Speaker 9: I can't tell you the last time I followed somebody
• 43:24
Speaker 9: in here reading the newspaper.
• 43:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, I have my Charleston Gazette mail newspaper hard copy
• 43:31
Speaker 4: write to my right as we speak right now, and
• 43:35
Speaker 4: as long as scaff and the folks at HD Media
• 43:39
Speaker 4: are putting out a paper. This is not an endorsement
• 43:41
Speaker 4: for HD Media. By the way, it's an endorsement the
• 43:43
Speaker 4: fact that I love newspapers. I will still get a
• 43:45
Speaker 4: hard copy of the newspaper. But that's just who I am.
• 43:49
Speaker 9: Yeah, Hey, Dave's come back to nineteen ninety nine. I've
• 43:51
Speaker 9: got a great idea. Why don't we get plastic bottles?
• 43:56
Speaker 9: Uh huh, filled them with tapwater and sell them are
• 44:00
Speaker 9: two bucks a pop?
• 44:01
Speaker 2: What do you know?
• 44:04
Speaker 4: Last week, two weeks ago, my wife and I were
• 44:07
Speaker 4: in a local Kroger store and she was buying some
• 44:12
Speaker 4: bottled water, and an older gentleman came up to her,
• 44:16
Speaker 4: older like us, came up to her and said, can
• 44:19
Speaker 4: you believe if anybody would have told you that, I
• 44:23
Speaker 4: think he said like forty years ago, thirty or forty
• 44:25
Speaker 4: years ago, that we would have been buying water in
• 44:28
Speaker 4: a store, you would have thought they were crazy.
• 44:32
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 44:32
Speaker 4: And now, how many different aisle if you go to
• 44:35
Speaker 4: your local Kroger or big Le Pigley Wigglely, how many
• 44:38
Speaker 4: different aisles? I mean, how much aisle space does bottled
• 44:40
  Speaker 4: water take up?
• 44:41
  Speaker 2: Now?
• 44:42
Speaker 9: Yeah, it takes up more than typically your your cokes,
• 44:46
Speaker 9: your pepsi's, although doctor pepper is still very much in demand,
• 44:51
Speaker 9: it does take up a lot of space. Think about
• 44:54
Speaker 9: the car that you're driving today. It's a safety feature
• 44:59
Speaker 9: on that car you are driving today. Twenty five years ago,
• 45:04
Speaker 9: your car had two safety features for horn and your
• 45:07
  Speaker 9: middle figure.
• 45:09
Speaker 4: That's and both still work well.
• 45:12
Speaker 3: Dave Allen still has those two features.
• 45:14
Speaker 4: I still have those two features, and I use one
• 45:16
Speaker 4: of them more than the other. Hey, speedy, I gotta
• 45:18
Speaker 4: take a break. Can you hang on through the break?
• 45:21
Speaker 9: Wait? Can hang on?
• 45:22
  Speaker 3: All right?
• 45:22
Speaker 4: All right? I got to take care of this. First

• 47:58
Speaker 4: All right, tex I still had a bag phone in
• 48:02
Speaker 4: two thousand, best phone ever. And I think we still
• 48:05
Speaker 4: had an answering machine in the year that was two thousand.
• 48:11
Speaker 9: You know, it's interesting on the phones in two thousand
• 48:15
Speaker 9: you couldn't text, right, and so just think of what
• 48:20
Speaker 9: did we have on Billboard that now say don't text
• 48:24
Speaker 9: and drive? Yeah, I mean what did we have on.
• 48:26
Speaker 4: Don't drink and drive, which you still shouldn't do, by
• 48:28
Speaker 4: the way, All right now, somebody's going to get us
• 48:31
Speaker 4: on semantics here, Texas. Two thousand is the end of
• 48:34
Speaker 4: the twentieth century. Two thousand and one was the new century,
• 48:38
Speaker 4: and Millennium twenty twenty six is the first twenty five
• 48:42
Speaker 4: years of the century.
• 48:46
Speaker 9: Who am I to argue with that?
• 48:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, you can't argue with that, Texas. My son bought
• 48:50
Speaker 4: a desktop, but seems that they are largely for gaming
• 48:53
Speaker 4: and video editing these days. For personal use, I can
• 48:58
Speaker 4: see that absolutely, tex says November nineteen ninety nine, met
• 49:03
Speaker 4: a girl in a Yahoo chat room. May of two
• 49:06
Speaker 4: thousand and one, married or still have her and her kids,
• 49:09
Speaker 4: but no more Yahoo chat rooms. Well you got Yahoo's
• 49:11
Speaker 4: of a different kind. Now you got kids, You got
• 49:13
Speaker 4: different kinds of yahoos.
• 49:16
Speaker 9: We have opened up a cattle worms of yeah.
• 49:19
Speaker 4: And here's the thing about it is is people don't
• 49:21
Speaker 4: and I have. You know, I've had a discussion not
• 49:23
Speaker 4: long ago about music with one of my neighbors and
• 49:29
Speaker 4: he listens to the show every morning. But he said
• 49:31
Speaker 4: to me, he said, you know, why don't why don't
• 49:33
Speaker 4: radio stations play music from the fifties or sixties anymore?
• 49:37
Speaker 4: And I had to explain to him. I said, there
• 49:40
  Speaker 4: is a time that I don't want to say you're
• 49:43
Speaker 4: not relevant because I'm getting to that age now. I'm
• 49:46
Speaker 4: not saying that at all. I'm just saying that true
• 49:50
Speaker 4: retro right now is two thousand and four. That's what
• 49:54
Speaker 4: true because it goes twenty years back. So if I
• 49:58
Speaker 4: wanted to say we are going to turn this station
• 50:00
Speaker 4: into a retro station, guess what I'd be playing Speedy,
• 50:04
Speaker 4: I would be playing nickelback, and I would be playing
• 50:07
Speaker 4: whomever else was a hit maker in two thousand and four.
• 50:11
Speaker 4: That's what retro is now, my friend.
• 50:14
Speaker 9: You know, I know we're running short on time, But
• 50:18
Speaker 9: twenty five years ago, the iPod was not invented yet.
• 50:21
Speaker 9: And if you ask a ten year old today was
• 50:23
Speaker 9: an iPod, They look at you. But when steam Jobs
• 50:27
Speaker 9: developed the iPod, he was able to get the music
• 50:31
Speaker 9: companies to come on board. A download was ninety nine cents.
• 50:35
Speaker 9: Steam Job said, I get seventy five cents. You get
• 50:38
Speaker 9: twenty four cents. And they jumped all over it because
• 50:41
Speaker 9: these pirate did websites Kaza and LimeWire that you were
• 50:47
Speaker 9: downloading the illegal music to burn your cvs. They were
• 50:51
Speaker 9: eating the record companies alive.
• 50:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And now when you look at the
• 50:57
Speaker 4: at the end of the year, when all the lists
• 50:58
Speaker 4: of the top movies, top television shows, whatever comes out,
• 51:02
Speaker 4: what is it now? It's not based on you going
• 51:04
Speaker 4: down to your local record store and buying in my gym.
• 51:07
Speaker 4: I'm an eighties kid, so what is it based on
• 51:09
Speaker 4: me going down to buy buying a cassette or CD.
• 51:11
Speaker 4: It's based on downloads. And I'll tell you I am
• 51:15
Speaker 4: so old to this day, speedy that I still pay
• 51:17
Speaker 4: for cat I still pay for ninety nine percent of
• 51:19
Speaker 4: what I purchase in cash? Who does that except for
• 51:22
Speaker 4: me and old people?
• 51:23
Speaker 9: Yeah? When you go to Blockbuster to rest your video,
• 51:27
Speaker 9: do you pay with cash? I do?
• 51:30
Speaker 4: I actually do. They don't take crypto at the Blockbuster.
• 51:34
Speaker 4: I'm at hey, Speedy. It's been fun having you on
• 51:36
Speaker 4: the show today. It's always always fun to reminisce about
• 51:40
Speaker 4: the good old days of two thousand. I appreciate you
• 51:44
