- 0:00So my name said, I'm part of Darkwater. It's me and Jack Syren.
- 0:07We are announcing that we're supporting Reilly Bolow on his tour in Australia in
- 0:14about two weeks time, which is very exciting. It is indeed, mate,
- 0:18thanks for joining us today. That's all right, thank you. Now,
- 0:22as you just said, my Darkwater has just been announced to support Billy
- 0:26Varlow on his upcoming tour, kicks off in Auckland on March twenty third,
- 0:29before hitting in Melbourne and Sydney and finishing in Brisbane on March is sevent eighth.
- 0:34I know it's just been announced to the world, but you've probably known
- 0:37for a little bit longer. But is it actually something? Yeah, like,
- 0:39is it real or are you still sort of going like what that?
- 0:45I? Yeah, look, it definitely does not feel real. I feel
- 0:49like it probably won't feel real until we've left Melbourne because I never actually played
- 0:54outside of Melbourne. That's also just like a huge it's it's just a really
- 1:00a massive deal. Yeah. No, we're stoked. It's it feels like
- 1:06they just kind of come out of the blue and very happy about it.
- 1:11Great. Well, and are you actually bona fide fans of his musical.
- 1:15It's just cooled. I have good support. I was a fan of him,
- 1:21and I did not know that he started a solo project, so that
- 1:26was like, that was the first news to me, and that was bloody
- 1:29sick. So that was a exciting piece of information to get. And then
- 1:34yeah, so I'm keen. You're just you're just not sure whether you should
- 1:41just let it all out there and get excited all or try instead of keep
- 1:44it in it's great. Yeah, no, look, interviews not the strong
- 1:49suit. Jack's. Jack doesn't even come to the interview because he he was
- 1:53just like, you know, one time I said music is my life on
- 1:55an interview and I can never do another one again. So it's just me.
- 2:00Yeah. Well, the people listen can't see your face made, but
- 2:04I can attest it in fact that you're happy as shit now. Dark Order
- 2:12is still a relatively new outfit. Mate, So what does someone like this
- 2:15actually mean to you as a band. You know, I think it's the
- 2:20biggest thing I could think of is that we formed in twenty eighteen and we
- 2:25did get quite a bit of momentum behind us, and we you know,
- 2:30we played Melbourne Music Week, with daff in the end of twenty nineteen,
- 2:36and just as we were doing that, we'd kind of we had some offers
- 2:39of going on tour to the UK and to Europe, and it was like
- 2:45kind of building up really big, and then of course pandemic hit and our
- 2:47whole thing just crashed. All the momentum crash. So this is just like
- 2:54really exciting. I think both of us, both Jack and I kind of
- 2:58are like, oh, you know, maybe it's gonna end. We're kind
- 3:02of like missed the boat a bit, just not the right time and uh,
- 3:08but yeah, it's like it's it's a huge deal to be supporting such
- 3:12a massive act. It's gonna, I guess, just like have a really
- 3:15big impact on how much we can get our music out there. And we
- 3:20have a new album coming out as well, so it's like very good timing.
- 3:23Yeah, and what I Gallaman really personally selected you for the support as
- 3:30well, Like, that's got a that's got a I don't even know what
- 3:34it's got to be. That's how good is it? Man? It's kind
- 3:38of yeah, that's a little bit unbelievable. I didn't know that piece of
- 3:42information. So that's yeah, I read the press. Yeah that's pretty good.
- 3:47I haven't read that yet. Damn no, I yeah, that's a
- 3:53huge compliment. Yeah, there's so many amazing musicians here as well. So
- 4:00I'm wondering if someone likes send your music to him and said, check these
- 4:02guys out, or if you just stumbled across you, or how I could
- 4:06be interested to know how it happened. Yeah, I would also if you
- 4:10find out let me know, But you'll be sharing a stage. Didn't just
- 4:14ask you? That's true. He's a lovely guy too. I've interviewed him
- 4:16a few times, mate, like he's an absolute gentleman. You've got to
- 4:20be fine. Yeah, no, sweet, Yeah, yeah, I'll definitely
- 4:25ask him. So there's going to be people out there that don't know much
- 4:30about dark Water yet, so not just a bit about the band. So
- 4:35what do you want to know? Let me try and think of hout that
- 4:38I was starting in twenty eighties. So what sort of what music do you
- 4:43play? What are you? What are your influences? What are you?
- 4:44What are your goals? Well, so yeah it started me and Jack Will
- 4:48living together and both having a really shit time in twenty eighteen. So he's
- 4:55been playing music for about twenty years. He's an amazing musician and then had
- 5:00started producing on Ableton. So I guess like initially the influencers were probably not
- 5:08the kind of thing that you'd expect for where we ended up, but you
- 5:12know, Patti Smith and Peter Harvey and like that, and then like some
- 5:17like seventies rock and eighties obviously we love the eighties goth sort of cynthie delightful
- 5:28music there. So that's like the big influencers, but it's a tricky it's
- 5:32a tricky question to answer for us. So yeah, so it's me and
- 5:38Jack, who is the singer, does the production and plays guitar. He's
- 5:44actually kind of like the genius. And basically it was like I want to
- 5:47start a band because his old band had wrapped up, and I learnt bass
- 5:53to join the band, and here we are. Nice. We had our
- 5:57friend be play as the drummer for a few years, but Bees moved overseas
- 6:02now, so so back to the two of us, which is how he
- 6:06initially started, which is you know, if you both do what you're supposed
- 6:12to do, that's all you need. Yeah, drummers. Drummers are just
- 6:15surplus package anyway, they're painting excellent. Technically, we're synth wave dark wave.
- 6:23That's what I say to the taxi drivers will be helping the car and
- 6:26the overall like your music mixes like mournful synthetic pop with cothic undertones, So
- 6:34I'm guessing atmosphere also plays a big part in your sound. Mm hmmm,
- 6:40yeah, No, that's a huge That's something that I think. It's the
- 6:45combination of the synth and the backing and then with Jack's vocals because he's just
- 6:49got the most beautiful kind of voice. It just I don't know like where
- 6:57it sits in the mix. It just makes this great eight dynamic atmosphere and
- 7:03yeah, yeah that How does that carry over into your live show? Like
- 7:10in this studio, I can imagine to be easy to get those atmospheres and
- 7:13those sounds, but when you take it live, is it is it difficult
- 7:15to represent? No? Actually, like to be honest, we've already done.
- 7:19So. We've recorded this latest album and we didn't eat either. It
- 7:24recorded in like a shed, but we've mostly played live and that's where most
- 7:30of our lack, you know, momentum has come from. Live. We
- 7:39play with a backing of a lot of the synth production that Jack has done,
- 7:45so it's not live synth that would be I mean, really impressive and
- 7:49maybe one day we'll do that, but you know, not right now,
- 7:54not right now. So the live parts of the bass and guitar and vocals,
- 7:59O little keyboard in there, but but yeah, we play with the
- 8:05backing of sense production. I'm gonna have to be careful. I answered this
- 8:09one, mate, because I could be setting me up because it's it's a
- 8:13loaded question, so great, what's your mindset going to be when you hit
- 8:18the stage, Like are you gonna be doing your best to try an upstage
- 8:22really? Or are you going out there to warm up the crowd for him?
- 8:26Not the question I was expecting. Look, I don't think we're going
- 8:31to upstage anyone, I so, so I don't think it's that to worry
- 8:35about. I reckon. You know, sometimes people don't get to the gig
- 8:41early to check out the support. So I'm hoping that people do come and
- 8:45then the people who've come to that, you know, just get like I
- 8:48guess put in the mood for like really just powerful emotion kind of music that's
- 8:54like very dynamic and very complex and like create the atmosphere that it creates performance,
- 9:01So I guess like engaging and I mean, you know, halfway through
- 9:07I usually, like the first song, I'm always like so nervous still because
- 9:11I'm not you know, you can tell by my interviewing skills, so like
- 9:13and I'm not necessarily next to it. But I by the time that we're
- 9:18into like the second or third song, I'm kind of like lost in the
- 9:22atmosphere of a like so, which is great, Like I kind of lucked
- 9:28out being able to be in dark water, I think. So it sounds
- 9:33like it's seats you down the ground man. Yeah, right, that's good.
- 9:37Now. I did a bit of Google search and I only found three
- 9:39songs. There's Boys and Shane of Hearts and sorrow Song. Is that all
- 9:43you've got at the moment. No, We're on so Spotify. We have
- 9:48our EP that we released in tween nineteen that was like a self titled It's
- 9:52got five tracks on there, and then on YouTube there was a couple of
- 9:58live record of our newest stuff. But we have a So in tween nineteen
- 10:05we got commissioned by City of Melbourne to write an album on the Grand Organ
- 10:09the town Hall. So we Covid kind of messed with that a bit.
- 10:16We were performed it in a November between nineteen. But that is in its
- 10:20final stages of mixing and it's going to be released this year. It's in
- 10:24its final mastering actually, so it's going to be released soon through Heavy Machinery
- 10:31in Melbourne, which would be great, and then that will be our first
- 10:35full length album that's out. I just say someone's gone along to see Billy
- 10:41Vaalow and they find out that you're playing, and they know nothing about you
- 10:43at all, and they want to listen. Give us three of your songs
- 10:48that they can listen to before they come to the show, so they get
- 10:50a good, good idea of what to expect. Yeap, all right,
- 10:54I'd say Poison if you go look that up on Spotify or YouTube, Poison
- 11:00and Siren Song I think is a good one for that. And then maybe
- 11:05maybe if they're on YouTube they can go find dark Web, which I think
- 11:09would be a good one. Otherwise, if throre on Spotify, I reckon
- 11:11the three you said, like Siren Song, Chain of Hearts and Poison of
- 11:15Three, or maybe they could also listen to Wasteland which is also the Boys
- 11:22and I think is always like the number one crowd pleaser that one. Actually
- 11:26I didn't even know we were on Triple Down Earth, but I just found
- 11:30out pretty recently. And I think it happened because Stelma Plum had played us
- 11:35in our top ten songs between nineteen and put Poison on there and that was
- 11:39a real hit for us when we got on the radio. Indeed. Yeah,
- 11:45all right, several thanks to you, Tom, and thanks again through
- 11:46that with me. The tour with Reilly Valo it's off Where's My Note kicks
- 11:52off March at thirty and you going to New Zealand as well. No,
- 11:56we're doing Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane. I'll be at the Brisbane show,
- 12:01so I'll make sure I come in early and say hello and find get rid
- 12:03of those nerves for you. Yes,
