- 5:32So, welcome to the podcast JM Halen.
- 5:35Welcome, thank you for having me on.
- 5:38It's awesome to be here, right? And yeah, so I mentioned earlier
- 5:44before you came on with like, my little intro thing that I do.
- 5:49Some people who've been following either the podcast or
- 5:56midgard musings in general, no of you because you've been on
- 6:00the on the channel before like we've done like a you actually
- 6:02been there a couple of times, you know, I interviewed you you
- 6:06kind of you interviewed me like we had this pretty neat.
- 6:10I think. Thing going there for a while so
- 6:13people may be familiar with who you are and all that but if for
- 6:16anyone that's new you know, listening to the show or needs a
- 6:19leader needs a little bit of a reminder.
- 6:21Why don't you if you don't mind sir, just kind of introduce
- 6:25yourself and what your role is in the Pagan Community around or
- 6:30the Heathen community. A lot like you had mentioned in
- 6:35the craft work that she all the tear and also in my practice in
- 6:40Shamanism, both of those who are kind of go hand-in-hand to craft
- 6:44and create for the community and spiritual needs.
- 6:49And whatever else could you do in your ritual?
- 6:52Where's or your general practice?
- 6:58It's great to be able to do what I love doing and give back at
- 7:04the same time. It's a labor of love.
- 7:07That is that cycle. That keeps going.
- 7:09It goes out and comes back and goes out and comes back.
- 7:14I work a lot with my hands and leatherwork try to do everything
- 7:19as traditional as possible. Because we've seen a lot of this
- 7:21stuff on the way the world and the pools and Creations that we
- 7:27come up with Yeah. And actually yeah, I own one of
- 7:33them. Well, I own, you know, some of
- 7:35your I don't I own a couple of pieces of your work but in terms
- 7:38of like, you know, ritual work talking about like the the drums
- 7:43and the rattles and some of the other, I mean your room sets the
- 7:48box is just all kinds of stuff, it's mostly nothing wood and
- 7:51leather work, right? I don't know if you get into any
- 7:54of the other like materials cloth or whatever.
- 7:58Do you do you make like Any like we invested in an anvil or a
- 8:03forge just yet but okay. It's been mr.
- 8:06Have a little bit but yeah that's a lot of people see and
- 8:10it's admirable and but change that you can create through that
- 8:14process but It's one of those, where your eyes are bigger than
- 8:18your stomach, those things take years and years of
- 8:21apprenticeship and practice and know how to crack these things.
- 8:26So it may be something that I'll look into getting some practice
- 8:31in but it would be a long, long, long time before I'm hammering
- 8:35out any kind of usable steel. Yeah.
- 8:38Yeah. But your work is phenomenal.
- 8:41I mean, I our tribe I should I always say like it's, you know,
- 8:46I Of a drum. But the more accurate I guess,
- 8:50description, is that we have a drum, our tribe, you know, me
- 8:54and my people here like it stays with me at my wife's and my
- 8:59house, but it's I way I see it is.
- 9:03It's a tribal drum, right? It's a something that we use
- 9:07together when we get together when we do things and it's
- 9:09definitely gotten. It's, it's working, you know,
- 9:12very recently. So you know for everyone
- 9:15listening and watching Watching and in all that kind of stuff.
- 9:17You guys want to check out the outfits here, the links for the
- 9:22website you've got, you know, Facebook, I know you that's I
- 9:27think is that the only social media?
- 9:28There's a, there's an Instagram I think, as well and Instagram.
- 9:34Yeah, that's social media presence.
- 9:39Yeah. So all that will be like, you
- 9:41know, in the show notes description area.
- 9:43You guys want to see more of what JM does.
- 9:46You'll find it on his, you know, social media, the stuff they
- 9:50post up there and then check out the website and see if there's
- 9:54anything that you want jam to work on.
- 9:56I mean, I'm really happy with the the commissioned piece for
- 10:01our tribe. You know, everything that I was
- 10:03talking with you about Jay and I think this goes into a bit about
- 10:07what you were mentioning earlier with, you know, crafting and
- 10:09working and how its, you know, it's more than just the tactile
- 10:13stuff, you know? It's more than just, you know,
- 10:15carving, Arun, set? Or it's more than just, you
- 10:18know, stretching a skin over a wooden frame to make a drum
- 10:20there. There's like a ritual element to
- 10:22it. And I felt that when like I
- 10:24spoke with you and started to describe what we were looking
- 10:29for, you know, sound-wise, aesthetic wise, you know what we
- 10:35were looking for in our drum and you know, you listen to my ideas
- 10:40which and then, you know, kind of fed that with your own
- 10:44knowledge and understanding of how are Going to accomplish that
- 10:47and, oh, well, so you asked for this, but I think if you want a
- 10:50certain result, you should consider something else.
- 10:52You know. So you're very open to it and I
- 10:54felt like it was, I felt like there was a lot of magic
- 10:56involved with that, you know, the sharing of ideas and
- 11:00creating something that really satisfied us completely, you
- 11:05know. Like it was it looks like we
- 11:07want it to look like it sounds like what we want it to sound
- 11:10like he feels. It just has that whole Essence
- 11:12to it and I don't think you could get that with just you
- 11:15know. Heading over to Amazon or any
- 11:18other sort of, you know, mass-produced, you know,
- 11:21conveyor belt type of thing and then say, yeah, this is what I
- 11:24want you do, you don't get the same results out of it, you
- 11:27know, you've gotta give to it, what you want to get from the
- 11:31soap. If you give it that part in that
- 11:33stolen that Spirit, that's what it's going to give back. yeah,
- 11:39and I mean, I think that just from the The drum that I have
- 11:45that we have. And then there's a, you made a
- 11:48candle, a tea light candle holder for me a while, back that
- 11:52still stays on my altar. Even some.
- 11:55So something as seemingly simple as that, you know, just People
- 12:00think you're crazy. If you if you tell them that
- 12:02there's you know you get a feeling from holding the certain
- 12:05object, you get feeling from wielding a certain object, you
- 12:09know, because the object is just in and of itself without any
- 12:12sort of Anything done to it is is just an inanimate object, it
- 12:18just is what it is. But with what you've done with
- 12:20them, I feel like it's it makes them function, something much
- 12:24more special and serves a greater purpose for us as he has
- 12:31a bit of an animist touch. When you young Spirit of can
- 12:37embody that spirit You get to work with it as a spirit.
- 12:44Yeah. So I mean I kind of have you and
- 12:47I have been friends for a relatively short period of time
- 12:51last few years, I'd say or give or take, you know, a month or so
- 12:54here and there. But I don't know, like just
- 12:57seeing seeing like where you where you are and I'm sure you
- 13:01seeing me where I was and how we kind of follow each other on our
- 13:05on our respective Journeys. You know, you're in a place now
- 13:08that you weren't years ago or even a year ago and same way
- 13:11with me, you know, It's in. It's amazing that for me to
- 13:15think about how the lives of ourselves and the lives of
- 13:19people around us kind of help for your shape. the the the
- 13:26beings that we become, you know, it's like you got to be a bit
- 13:30fluid and you got to be flexible to adapt to scenarios and adapt
- 13:37to things. And if anything that I've
- 13:39experienced like in the past year or so it's that, you know,
- 13:42you just don't ever know what's going to what kind of curveball
- 13:46you're going to hit or what kind of Bend in the river, you're
- 13:48going to have to lean into and just I don't know if that's AI,
- 13:53don't know if you felt that sort of way to just over the years,
- 13:56especially recently. But it to me, it's been
- 13:58unavoidable. Like, you can't get away from
- 14:00it. Lutely, there's, there's always
- 14:03going to be change. That's why we call it a path, a
- 14:05journey in life. You're always moving.
- 14:07It's changing and you're going to encounter different things.
- 14:12And I think a big part of it is becoming comfortable with
- 14:17yourself. Learning how to be yourself?
- 14:23I get asked all the time. How long have you been
- 14:25practicing? And I threw this.
- 14:29What sounds like a cop-out answer.
- 14:32Lifelong not known. How long have you really been
- 14:35going to say? No.
- 14:36I really believe that. I've been practicing like long,
- 14:39a, the norn decree, the beginning, and the end.
- 14:42And what's in the middle, is our control, but the universe knows.
- 14:45It knows who we are, what we are, what we are to become.
- 14:51But when we were born and we grow up, we have to spend so
- 14:55much time, just learning how to exist, how to crawl, how to
- 14:59walk, how to feed ourselves, how to talk, how to communicate.
- 15:03So we have to learn how to be people for so much.
- 15:06This big chunk of our early lives.
- 15:09Then once we learn how to become people, we can learn how to
- 15:13become our self. We can learn who we are in that
- 15:16people. And I think that point of
- 15:20Discovery AIDS and the rest of the journey because if you can
- 15:23become comfortable with yourself in your path and in your
- 15:28direction, then you're going to take all those curve balls a
- 15:32little bit easier. It's not going to be such a
- 15:34rocky road, your mindset will be a little bit different, your
- 15:38outlook. Roll with the punches, like you
- 15:42were talking about, you just keep on going things, change and
- 15:46things are different. You get hit with something out
- 15:48of nowhere, but when you feel comfortable in yourself and you
- 15:54know, yourself and your trust in yourself, you trust that you're
- 15:58going to keep choking and keep on growing. yeah and I think too
- 16:04that you know with with as much Focus as one can have on
- 16:08themselves and then developing themselves, you know, there's
- 16:11there's a large part of it to me that also Has.
- 16:19There's, there's, there's, there's a, there's important
- 16:20place. And I've talked about this on
- 16:22almost every podcast about tribe and community.
- 16:25And the society that you were interwoven in with how your
- 16:31lives as an individual, as a family getting can inter, you
- 16:35know, they're woven in with other people's lives.
- 16:38And there's this, you know, we can over time develop
- 16:44relationships with with friends and those friends become for can
- 16:47become extensions of our family and how much of that also helps
- 16:53us in shaping our house because let's face it, sometimes we hit
- 16:56points in our lives where we're just like enough already, you
- 17:00know, where we feel like it's just That's it for me.
- 17:04That's all I want to do. I've hit a wall that or you
- 17:07don't really know where to go and then you've got those close
- 17:11friends and family those those kin and kith, you know,
- 17:14individuals in your life that Kind of like bring you back,
- 17:19too. I kind of almost like take you
- 17:23out of that funk bring you back to reality like no man.
- 17:26Like you know, you got this to do, you can do this, you can do
- 17:28that. And I feel that without that you
- 17:30know, without that close sense of tribe, not that close sense
- 17:35of family that that family unit, the extension of the family
- 17:37unit, we're missing out where we're leaving, so much
- 17:42importance out of our Lives, by not having it there.
- 17:45You know, you don't have to face things alone, you know, kind of
- 17:48that whole pack mentality. That ties into it some of what
- 17:53we're going to get into here in just a little bit with intent
- 17:55and purpose that herpes, those people that you surround
- 17:59yourself with give you a sense of purpose and help you to
- 18:03continue to learn and understand and discover purpose throughout
- 18:07your path. And that's a really motivating
- 18:10thing. When you hit those Low Places or
- 18:12states that when you peel purpose again, it can really
- 18:16pick you up out of a funk. And I think that's really
- 18:22important to think of ties. And people, if you surround
- 18:25yourself with other crucial, vital to that, Yeah.
- 18:31No, I'm glad you said that because I know man like for
- 18:33minced like I was a I was talking offline about this and
- 18:37like before you came on just kind of like laying the
- 18:41foundations of things with with the what today's episode was
- 18:44going to be about. And at the time that this airs,
- 18:48right? It's a week and a day passed or
- 18:53since the start of the like the historical Icelandic or the
- 18:57historical, Scandinavian winter nights.
- 18:59You look at From sources. You look at different things.
- 19:01We, you know, the winter night started on three full moons
- 19:06before you'll. So like, from a historical
- 19:10Reckoning last Wednesday was the start of winter nights which
- 19:16was, you know, observed as a three night, long celebration.
- 19:20And I had intentions of doing a certain thing.
- 19:24So talking about intent and purpose, right?
- 19:26I had intentions, I was intent on doing something.
- 19:30Eric for that, you know, kind of like drumming in under the moon
- 19:33and then having a fire and it's not in the other Well, what
- 19:37ended up happening was none of that.
- 19:39You know I couldn't get out there and do any of that and it
- 19:43was there was a lot of, we talk about lamb life's curveballs.
- 19:47You know, I was looking at my car because of, you know,
- 19:53mechanical issues and and trying to deal with things going on in
- 19:57the family that I won't go into detail with here.
- 20:00But just, you know, family struggles, family Strife, sand
- 20:05and things that have just And leading up to that day over the
- 20:10weeks and months prior and you know but I look at it and I go
- 20:14back and I go out, you know, my intent was to do something and
- 20:17that's not what it was, it was that's not what my time was
- 20:20intended to be your intent but it ended up not being your
- 20:25purpose. Yeah, yeah and when you and I
- 20:28first were talking about this whole thing, this this was a
- 20:31discussion that you and I had had over like a phone call or
- 20:34something weeks ago before you came.
- 20:36Come on here to talk about it more.
- 20:38And I was like, who is intent in?
- 20:40I mean they like the same thing and it just two different words
- 20:42that mean the same thing and you know, your challenge was that
- 20:47you know there's it's not and what to think about.
- 20:50So I'm really I think I feel like now is like a good segue
- 20:53into what we're talking about here with the differences
- 20:59between intent and purpose because intent we talked about
- 21:05like with sacrifice With offerings with things that we
- 21:07do, either with our communities, with our tribes, in a way to
- 21:12connect to and with the gods or the sacred, to the spirits in
- 21:15the land around it with the everybody's like, well it's not
- 21:17just what, it's not what you do. It's the intention behind what
- 21:20you do is the intent behind it and I think that was the door.
- 21:23That's what kind of opened the door for us to discuss intent
- 21:27and purpose and then how that can fit into just, you know,
- 21:30ritual or how it fits into everyday life.
- 21:32So, I know I just blurb the whole bunch of stuff out about
- 21:35it, but Let's let's let's talk about it.
- 21:38You know, let's let's dive into it a bit.
- 21:42It's for me a way that I like to add a little bit of depth to my
- 21:48practice. Mine regular go about and what I
- 21:52do and spiritual sense in my connection with the Spiritual
- 21:58Beings and those places and The difference in my eyes and in my
- 22:06experience comes down to things. Like what?
- 22:10Commitment, conviction, provide the difference between intent
- 22:15and purpose. If you walk into a race and
- 22:24tape, it is my intent to win this race today.
- 22:28That sounds good, and it's positive and it's believable,
- 22:32but then you've got it Guy that walks in or another gal that
- 22:35walks into that race and says it is my purpose to win this race
- 22:39today. Whoa, that's serious, this
- 22:42person really believes it. They're committed to it, they're
- 22:46going to do it. And even if they don't, I know
- 22:51that they've got it set in their mind because they believe if
- 22:54their purpose that they're going to give it all they've got. so
- 22:59that conviction that commitment to what, maybe your intent comes
- 23:06out as purpose, we look at the terms of mocked and Croft, both
- 23:12main power but monster is more like the course of nature, as it
- 23:22takes its They and, and the way of the universe, it those things
- 23:29that are outside like a thunderstorm or waterfall,
- 23:33that's power. That's powerful.
- 23:36And then you've got Croft. It's still power but it is and
- 23:42what we do, and how we change things, we use that as an
- 23:46application of our will through intent to occur purpose.
- 23:53It sounds like right, the more you talk about it.
- 23:56Like it sounds like, I don't know if you're familiar with the
- 23:58term that the, and I'm pretty sure it's an Old English word,
- 24:01but Maine and it's spelled like m AE.
- 24:05Let the hasta AE combination Nae GE N Main.
- 24:09Looks like Megan but it's pronounced Main and it's you
- 24:13know, everything has main. There's there there's power in
- 24:17things all around but but you know the application of it and
- 24:22in the doing of it, how How we can increase our main, how we
- 24:25can increase or expand upon that name and make it something
- 24:31workable with those around us. Not just those who we see, but
- 24:35those things that we don't necessarily physically, see, you
- 24:39know, the seen and the Unseen forces that we I guess, you
- 24:44know, share existence with to me, it means something like
- 24:51that. It's a practice with purpose to
- 24:56act and to do these things, not only with intent, but with
- 25:01purpose to know, to understand, it could be someone's intent to
- 25:08practice. Let's go with ancestral
- 25:11veneration. My intent there is to of course
- 25:16honor my ancestors. So I do things like I'll leave a
- 25:21plate out or for a drink then we'll order some sort of votive
- 25:25or or act or ritual to honor my ancestors and practicing that.
- 25:30That's my intent is to honor but what is the purpose?
- 25:35We don't think about the purpose.
- 25:37We think about the ACT, we think about the intent purpose through
- 25:42that intent, is to gain that relationship or build, or
- 25:47strengthen that relationship that you have with your
- 25:50ancestors. If you're practicing ancestral
- 25:54veneration and surely you believe, one day, you will
- 25:57eventually join them. And what kind of welcoming would
- 26:01you like to have, you know, how would you like to be celebrated
- 26:06after you're gone by those you leave behind, you want them to
- 26:10just active intent or with purpose and understand that
- 26:14relationship. It makes a lot of sense, the
- 26:19more I think about it, you know, it's not what we do so much as
- 26:23why we do it, which I think for a lot of us like, for me, for
- 26:28the longest, like, what the, why is the it like that?
- 26:30That's the intent. But it's not.
- 26:32The why is, is purpose what you do?
- 26:34Your intent behind it. Like, if that's the, you know,
- 26:37like you say, you're you expect to achieve a certain result but
- 26:40why, why do you do it in that way?
- 26:42Why do you say the things you say, why do you do the things
- 26:45you do? It's the The exactly the purpose
- 26:48behind it, if you can get out without purpose or discover the
- 26:51purpose, then you can start practicing with purpose on
- 26:55purpose. I feel that makes a, that that
- 27:00makes a pretty strong statement. Following one of the last
- 27:03podcast might have been last week because some of the things
- 27:07that came up was that whatever you are and it could be, you
- 27:15know, your Heathen, your Pagan, you're Christian, or Buddhist,
- 27:19or Hindu or whatever, you know, be it and live it.
- 27:24And a lot of people get You know, they they think that
- 27:28low-level paganism is the only real living religion, or Heathen
- 27:32re is a living religion, and I challenge people say, you know,
- 27:35what does it matter what you are?
- 27:37Doesn't matter what your religion is, what your beliefs
- 27:39are, if that's what you're if, that's what kind of motivates
- 27:44you to be something right? For whatever purpose it is and
- 27:48you should be it. You should live as such and live
- 27:52accordingly, and carry yourself with the same conviction.
- 27:57And purpose that is a reflection on on what your values and what
- 28:02you believe in. So again, back to what I was
- 28:05talking about earlier that turning point, we have to learn
- 28:08how to be people. And so we look for things like
- 28:11faiths, and religions, and ways to be people, but then you hit
- 28:17that point where it's time to start learning how to be
- 28:20yourself and be your true self. True to yourself.
- 28:26That's where the real faith is. It's in your genuineness and
- 28:31your honesty and in your purpose.
- 28:36Yeah, because what purpose would you serve how good of a person
- 28:40and that probably goes into some other things too?
- 28:42You know, you can you can serve a good purpose or you can serve
- 28:45an ill purpose, depending on what you put yourself through,
- 28:48how you apply yourself, right? And you're our purpose, and the
- 28:53value that we have to the people around us, right?
- 28:58Is placed on us by those people. So if we are worth less or
- 29:05worth, All you know, it's because of the things that we've
- 29:09done and how much of ourselves have we neglected in that
- 29:12process when we're trying to either impress somebody or press
- 29:17some people or oh look it I look at how well I can recite this
- 29:20bade or look at how well I can you know, say this prayer in Old
- 29:24Norse and look at my pronunciation and look at this
- 29:26and look at that. And will will will like all this
- 29:28superficial stuff that purpose that you're doing it for is is
- 29:32not of real value of real worth. I feel that goes into some
- 29:38really strong things, you know, it's I'm talking about one day
- 29:41becoming an ancestor and what we do our Deeds, you know, our feet
- 29:44into that well and talk about or log and the layers of luck that
- 29:52have been laid down before us, you know, by the things that
- 29:54people before us did the purpose that They carried out, it's,
- 30:00it's more than just us in this moment, you know, it becomes
- 30:04something. Or could become something of
- 30:07greatness later on Oroville later on?
- 30:10I mean, it just is just becomes, you know?
- 30:12I mean, or log doesn't measure. It's not measured by what's good
- 30:17or right or bad or whatever time it just is it just it's there.
- 30:20So be careful of you know, how much be careful what we do.
- 30:25What we add, what our purpose is driving us to do the things that
- 30:29we did. Our final purpose is to leave
- 30:34behind the wife that we Lived for others.
- 30:38There's such great purpose in that passing and how you
- 30:41remembered and lesson people learn from you that you passed
- 30:46on to your children or even years after you're gone,
- 30:49grandkids will say. Hey remember Granddad used to do
- 30:52this to Grandma used to do this and that was a really smart way
- 30:56and that's helping me. Now, your purpose is the wife
- 31:00that you lived, when it all comes back to the cross, in that
- 31:04cycle Point again. Leaving this life and Earth but
- 31:09if you were mentioning good purpose or bad purpose and this
- 31:13is such an awesome thing that's making a comeback.
- 31:16The lawn maintenance shaming. I'm such a fan of it yard alone.
- 31:23It's okay. You don't have to have the leaf
- 31:27blower out. The weed eater out from our out.
- 31:30Three, four, five days a week, it'll be okay, I get some people
- 31:34with an HOA s where you get penalized.
- 31:38If your grass is a sixteenth of an inch too long, but your
- 31:43intent is to have a nice-looking long, but what's the purpose?
- 31:48Yeah. What What's the purpose?
- 31:51Oh, does it mean? Yeah, what are you doing?
- 31:53If you don't have to do it, why are you doing?
- 31:58Why do you want it to look good? What's the purpose?
- 32:00Yeah. What do you want?
- 32:05What do you really want? You know, you ever seen that
- 32:07movie? Look at the notebook, right?
- 32:09He's Rome wants to be. Yeah, grass wants to give it
- 32:17just wants to grow. That's the Earth.
- 32:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:21I'm like, what do you want? Why are you doing this?
- 32:23What do you really want? You want to look good for that
- 32:26moment? You want to just be happy in
- 32:28that moment? Or do you want something that's,
- 32:31you know, and that's what's I guess.
- 32:33I don't know if it's because of just age.
- 32:35You know, the older. I get, the more mileage that
- 32:38gets put under these tires so to speak, you know.
- 32:41I don't feel so much about what I'm doing in the moment.
- 32:47As me as meaning, anything more than just that I looked at what
- 32:50I do and see, well, what kind of Ripple is this going to leave?
- 32:53What kind of echo is this going to be like?
- 32:56What's going to resonate later on?
- 32:58You know, is what I do now going to be something that is worth
- 33:02anything later. And I guess for me, that that's
- 33:06that's without really thinking about it, but hearing, you know,
- 33:09as talk about it now like that's realizing purpose and applying
- 33:13it, you know, me, at that moment last week setting up a fire
- 33:20because I wanted to or gettin my drum out and drumming because I
- 33:24wanted to and that to me was like, well, it's winter nights,
- 33:26right? I have to, it's winter nights.
- 33:28I got to do it. This is this is, you know, it's
- 33:31a thing, right? I got to do this.
- 33:33Well. There would have been no purpose
- 33:38of a really, there would have been no real good purpose for me
- 33:41to do it at that moment because of all the other things that I
- 33:44had to address and take care of, you know, things of more
- 33:47meaningful value things that had I ignored it.
- 33:50Had I not a dress, you know, could have had that ill effect
- 33:55where I was talking about just the bad things like that end up
- 33:58in the well anyway that's going to be there.
- 34:01But without feeding it it's really just a layer that you Got
- 34:05to get through at some point, it's really interesting it.
- 34:08Now, the cosmos and the universe help guide in that purpose and
- 34:14how to experience that change, you had intended to go out and
- 34:19play the drum. But other things happened, that
- 34:21took your attention that you found were more important.
- 34:24You would have missed, had those mock come off, and it's even
- 34:28little things that people will pick up on and catch a notice
- 34:31later on in their adult life. That they'll remember, Being a
- 34:36little kid and how much they love to play in the dirt, but
- 34:39then didn't do it for years. And now, one of their favorite
- 34:42things is to go out in the morning and work in the garden
- 34:46and get their hands in the dirt. Again, like the universe knows
- 34:50who you are, who you're going to be, but we've got to go through
- 34:53that process and because little hints and reminders and pulls
- 34:57and our ancestors are great for that to kind of keep us on track
- 35:01or steer Ostrom. Too much Peril if it's not our
- 35:07own doing if yeah. Bhai.
- 35:11Hey, dude, get so much back that has been taken away as far as
- 35:16the place that I live and the way that the land had been
- 35:20maintained before I got here, I intend to give so much of that
- 35:25back and I have been and the purpose in that is to just do
- 35:29the right thing. It doesn't belong to me.
- 35:31I live here. I'm only going to be here too.
- 35:34Tiny, tiny little bit of time, but the trees that are growing
- 35:37here are going to count with me for my hundreds of years and all
- 35:40the lives that they're going to support the wildflowers have
- 35:44come back, there are more deer than more birds, it's going back
- 35:48to its natural balanced State. My intent aided in, and that
- 35:54ultimate purpose. Kind of bringing it.
- 36:02Yeah, go bring it back to the way it should, you know,
- 36:06originally was or closer to that, you know, Primal hurting
- 36:11other people. And this happens with the same
- 36:15analogy of reference with the lawn Z1 neighbor will know.
- 36:19And then the next day, the other neighbor feels like, they have
- 36:22to know because the other neighborhood and yeah, and I
- 36:27suggest doing this a lot in practice.
- 36:32Even seasoned people that have been practicing for years, will
- 36:36see somebody do something and they'll they'll imitated or
- 36:40incorporated into their practice with the intent of doing the
- 36:44same thing, because it's a form of practice, and they want to
- 36:46practice, but they don't know the purpose.
- 36:49Yeah, parody parody without understanding.
- 36:52And so, we lose value, in practice.
- 36:56When we do that, we lose the meaningfulness that is supposed
- 37:01to. There because we're not taking
- 37:03the time to understand its purpose.
- 37:06We're only seeing or thinking of our intentions and it's the
- 37:10practice that it can come Innocent.
- 37:12It's not that we're just copying to do it to look, cool.
- 37:16It's a lot of young folks are really eager to practice and
- 37:19they haven't found the resources to really get into it so they
- 37:23see things and they repeat those things to get into it with you
- 37:29really, really got to get to a point.
- 37:31Where you start understanding why it is?
- 37:34You're doing what you're doing? Otherwise, you just droning.
- 37:37There's no meaning to it. Yeah, no.
- 37:41That's that's I mean, that's it's really interesting because
- 37:44like, the I was talking to a fellow earlier this week a few
- 37:49days ago now and You know, he had been out doing some drumming
- 37:54and stuff. And I don't know again, if it
- 37:57was, you know, Like you were saying, you know, seeing other
- 38:01people talking about doing it for winter nights and he's like,
- 38:03yeah, I want to do that. I think it's more than that, I
- 38:07think it goes way more than that actually, but suffice it to say.
- 38:09A lot of us are, or were thinking along the same lines of
- 38:13doing it for, you know, or whatever, our own reasons or
- 38:17purpose, but to do the same thing or something similar and
- 38:21he's, you know, sharing with me, you know, kind of how he got
- 38:25himself into that mindset, you know, he's, he painted, His
- 38:29face, he dressed a certain way, he very corporated that ritual
- 38:34theater element. That I feel really helps us
- 38:40approach ritual more wholesomely, right?
- 38:43Because like otherwise like, get not that you can't do ritual
- 38:46without doing all that stuff. But really like, when you put on
- 38:49the guard when you put on that Mantle, when you paint yourself
- 38:52in that way, it really helps put you in that mindset.
- 38:55And I was asking I'm like, so why did you do this?
- 38:57Why did you do that? Just to see what he said, and he
- 38:59was given Me these like really, you know, insightful answers and
- 39:02he's and he was a bit reserved. He's like, I don't know, really
- 39:04know if that makes sense or whatever.
- 39:06I said, do to makes total sense for you and you sharing it with
- 39:10me. Makes enough sense for me to
- 39:11know that you're on there, like you're doing it for the right
- 39:14reasons, your purpose is correct, you know, doesn't
- 39:19matter what I think about, what your Rune on your face, means or
- 39:21whatever you had a reason for you.
- 39:23Have a purpose for it and you lived it out, you expressed it
- 39:27and like That to me was like, that's great you know to see
- 39:33that something that maybe in was that he was inspired by was
- 39:37lived out with true purpose behind it, you know not just for
- 39:41the sake of doing it because it was the full moon and everybody
- 39:43else may be doing it. I share a lot of my practice and
- 39:49ritual and I do it in a way to help motivate and Inspire
- 39:54others. To feel yourself and get into
- 40:00that spirit, and be your true self.
- 40:03And we've come a long way from having to hide the ridicule and
- 40:09persecution like the times have changed the last 15-20 years,
- 40:17the Bible thumping and things like that.
- 40:18It's it's lost. Its deafening tone, I think.
- 40:23And so we have this opportunity to Be who we should be and
- 40:29return to tradition and roots and things like that.
- 40:33So I don't mind to share a lot of what I do in practice in
- 40:36ritual, and I get a lot of comments that your outfit looks
- 40:40awesome. I love your ritual where I want
- 40:43to make something like that. I'm going to make something like
- 40:46that. Where did you get this piece?
- 40:47And I make 99% of my ritual around my ritual work.
- 40:54But the biggest point that I want people to understand when
- 40:58they see me where Nina is each element, I have on serves a
- 41:04purpose. Every single thing that I
- 41:09incorporate empty, that is serving a purpose, it's on
- 41:12purpose. Yeah, and so you know, for other
- 41:18people out here, listen and watch and write find your
- 41:21purpose. Yeah.
- 41:27For it to look good to be well dressed to honor those spirits
- 41:32and show that you've made an effort.
- 41:34You gave a damn about how you're presenting yourself when you're
- 41:38reaching out to them to communicate with them.
- 41:41I'm not going to show up in some hole in boxers or underwear.
- 41:46I'm going to I'm going to make an effort.
- 41:48It's like you know you're communicating with someone that
- 41:53more than deserves more respect. Act in effort.
- 41:58And so our intent is to look good for that, but then our
- 42:01purpose in what we wear. Was into a lot of different
- 42:07things. Some of the things you see, like
- 42:11the mjolnir has been known for the longest time to be worn as a
- 42:16symbol of being a Thor's manure for that protection of Milner,
- 42:20the protector of midgard and Mankind.
- 42:25It's a lot of things like that, but on a larger scale, whether
- 42:28it be painting or head draws to wear other magical symbols, or
- 42:37Drum rattle horns. Yeah.
- 42:44Yeah. I was I can't remember where It
- 42:47might have just been like a on a social media post that I made
- 42:52on. I don't remember which platform
- 42:54where it was but it was something to do with the drum
- 42:58and drumming and I think I may have even had the drum on
- 43:03display or it was in a video or something.
- 43:05And somebody was asking you know like oh, you know, Or making a
- 43:09comment, you know, if I had a drum I would do the same thing
- 43:14or whatever and and I thought about it and I responded I says
- 43:17well, I didn't always have a drum and so when I was, you
- 43:20know, getting into that ritual State, whatever I would Stomp
- 43:25the earth, I would, I would get to the ground and I would beat
- 43:28the Earth with my hands or my Palms are my feet and I would
- 43:32drum rhythm even though it wasn't like on a framed.
- 43:35You know that animal skin drum. I was still Capturing the
- 43:39essence of the Rhythm, the heartbeat, the whole purpose
- 43:43behind it. Again, this word keep, you know,
- 43:45the meaning of it, the sole purpose, the purpose behind it,
- 43:48and why do we do it? It's too, you know, for so many,
- 43:51I guess, different reasons or purposes.
- 43:53Why? But the ultimate purpose to me,
- 43:55was like, the connect and feel that Rhythm and feel that
- 43:58heartbeat and to me, when I didn't have a drum, it was, you
- 44:00know, kind of stomp dance, you know, on the ground, you know.
- 44:08Stop drop and roll. But you know, just just feel it
- 44:11that way. And then it was like they they
- 44:13reacted it to that comment such a way like huh?
- 44:17Never really thought of it that way there's a natural feel, it's
- 44:21a natural Pole to it for rhythm. There's a rhythm to the Earth
- 44:26and everything from an actual drum that you've beat with a
- 44:30stick or your hand to clapping or you see people hitting who
- 44:35sticks together Maria friends from hilum, If his things we
- 44:39looked having those two bones, just that simple sound.
- 44:43I've seen people get employed drum circle without a drum and
- 44:46had their chests and even deeper than that.
- 44:50You still hold a drum because your heart the don't don't,
- 44:54don't is constantly drawing so long as you're alive.
- 44:58Yeah. Yeah, today and that rhythm.
- 45:07Yeah, it's like a constant and what the rattle that we use for
- 45:11to connect in that frequency of the Earth.
- 45:16Rhythms and beats and frequencies.
- 45:20There's an amazing science behind it all.
- 45:22Now, that's starting to come out.
- 45:24A lot of people are getting on board with it.
- 45:28Those frequencies and Hertz, and the vibration of the Earth
- 45:32itself. Its We really yeah.
- 45:37Yeah, no, yeah. Like along that way, I saw
- 45:41something last week and actually mentioned it on the podcast last
- 45:45week but not like so there's like there's a certain level of
- 45:50hurts that are that are physical ears.
- 45:53Can capture, you know, the frequencies like and even like
- 45:56things that are visible to us. There's there's a certain
- 45:58frequency of wavelength that we can see and that's it and
- 46:02there's a certain wavelength or frequency that we can.
- 46:05And that's it. And it's very small in
- 46:07comparison to what's out there or its large, whatever the
- 46:09whatever the scale. However, it goes large small,
- 46:13which scientifically proves that there's more going on around us
- 46:17than we can really even see in here that we can tangibly absorb
- 46:22and pick up on. And you know, you look at
- 46:26animals, you know, the things that animals can hear and see
- 46:29that that he'd the human mind or the human senses, can't capture
- 46:34and all that stuff. So, It's like, you know, you
- 46:35can't even argue the the science behind it.
- 46:39And it's I look at, you know, like you're talking like drum
- 46:42circles and up about the indigenous American indigenous
- 46:50peoples, you know, and the way that they express through song
- 46:54and through dance and Rhythm and everything, you know it's
- 46:57literally stomping ground dancing on the ground and what
- 47:01the purpose behind that is and how to connect to The spirit or
- 47:07spirits around them so animals. What are those other amazing
- 47:14things you're talking about? What we can here versus what
- 47:18they can in that spectrum that that sound Spectrum, elephants
- 47:23and whales can communicate and tones that we don't even hear
- 47:28that our ears can't pick up but to them travel Miles and Miles,
- 47:33they can communicate from miles apart.
- 47:35So not being able to experience that it almost seems like a form
- 47:41of telepathy that they're communicating where we don't
- 47:46hear it. So R is it really so strange to
- 47:48think that there are other Communications in that way or in
- 47:52that form? It's just because it's not what
- 47:55we're used to. Were not what is typical for us
- 47:58or comfortable for us to think about and would rather consider
- 48:02that it doesn't exist. If I can't see it, if I can't
- 48:05hear it, if I can't touch it or taste it.
- 48:08It doesn't, does we just have to think a little bit bigger than
- 48:12ourselves? Yeah, I think I think that we've
- 48:17become as a species, so dependent on what's tangible and
- 48:23modern times have not really helped us in that aspect because
- 48:28we live in a time in a, in a time frame or in a timeline.
- 48:33Right, where everything is right then.
- 48:34And now it's got to happen right away.
- 48:37You know, where's my package? Let me track it.
- 48:39Where's my order? Let me track it on, you know,
- 48:43the app that I've got or where's my You know, where's my likes?
- 48:47Reacts comments, all this kind of stuff, we live in a very like
- 48:51instant gratification sort of thing and you know, in in, in
- 48:58that way, we're missing out on a lot of things that we Could be
- 49:05in tune with, you know, where I live.
- 49:08You know, is outside of the city, but close enough, where
- 49:10the light pollutes the air to the point where you can't see
- 49:13the night sky as clearly as you would if you were further
- 49:17isolated away from it all, you know, and you you miss the
- 49:20certain sounds of nature, you know, because of cars and
- 49:25traffic in this and that, and it, it does.
- 49:27You know, I think it definitely impacts us and affects us in
- 49:30ways that we become. Just so ingrained in you, To
- 49:33this is life. I can't see it.
- 49:35I can't hear it. I can't experience a tangibly
- 49:38somehow then it must not be there.
- 49:41And how do we get back to reconnecting to those things
- 49:47around us that you may not just see right away or here right
- 49:52away but they're there. And if we slow down quiet
- 49:55ourselves listening and look that they are in a way. just as
- 50:01just as absorbable, just as visible just as Audible It just
- 50:06takes a little bit extra work. Like you're saying this before
- 50:10and it's some of the bulk of my work in Shamanism is in helping
- 50:16people to establish that connection again or make that
- 50:21reconnect. And as the society, we've really
- 50:26done it to ourselves through this polish and drive toward
- 50:31convenience. Like you're drinking that water
- 50:35right now, I can go into the kitchen and I can turn the tap
- 50:41and water is going to come on, we don't appreciate water like
- 50:44people did even 100 years ago. 500 years ago, when you had to,
- 50:49to walk, to a well, or to a spring to get water to drink,
- 50:54there was a different appreciation.
- 50:56There was a deeper connection there and we've lost that in our
- 51:00pursuit of convenience and instant gratification.
- 51:04As a culture as a society. We want to go push that button
- 51:08and it happened, turn that spigot and what we want comes
- 51:11out. So we don't have that same
- 51:14connection because the appreciation isn't there.
- 51:20Things like food. If you have to grow all of your
- 51:23own food or hunt or forage for your sustenance, you're going to
- 51:28appreciate that a little bit more, instead of throwing half
- 51:31of it in the trash. Like, this doesn't taste the
- 51:33best, so I'll eat something different later on, right?
- 51:39Yeah, we're or how much? Yeah, waist and just waste in
- 51:43general because we're not appreciating things the same way
- 51:47anymore. Yeah, I think about, you know,
- 51:54the the environment that I grew up around and grew up in and was
- 51:59raised in and it was well, we did have, you know, it's not
- 52:04like I grew up without electricity without running
- 52:06water. But a lot of the things that I
- 52:10did, you know, working on a farm, like it was, oh, you want
- 52:13some, you want to get a drink of water.
- 52:14It's, you know, you, you didn't bring a bucket with you or cat
- 52:19or bottles with you. You went back to the farmhouse.
- 52:22You picked up the, the Tin Cup that was hanging around the well
- 52:26pump and you stood there and pumped until the water came out
- 52:30was clean and fit to be drunk, you know?
- 52:32Because there was sediment and there's things that, you know,
- 52:34you just got to get those those the sediment and stuff out of
- 52:38there. But, you know, you work for
- 52:39that. And it may see something
- 52:41trivial, but I remember we, you know, watering our cattle, same
- 52:45way, it wasn't turned on the hose.
- 52:47It was carry buckets of water out to their trough from pumping
- 52:50it from the well, you know, Same sort of thing, you know, those
- 52:56those cattle where are, you know, source of meat, you know?
- 53:00So You raised them, you took care of them.
- 53:05You you tended to them. You husband them husband.
- 53:08You know, I mean like you took care of them and then slaughter
- 53:11them and process them and provided them and they provided,
- 53:15you know, they're they're meeting and all that for the for
- 53:17the community. And even then the gardens and
- 53:19all that and a lot of it, I miss, you know, I mean, it was
- 53:23to make sure that they didn't go without water, and the purpose
- 53:27was to keep these things alive because, yeah, they in turn are
- 53:30keeping you alive. In the M10 man.
- 53:37That's, that's, that's that that I don't think you can get any
- 53:39more real than that, you know, the purpose behind what we're
- 53:42doing. We're not just feeding these
- 53:44animals and watering these animals because they're hungry,
- 53:47even though they are. But the purpose is to take care
- 53:50of them because they serve a purpose, and their purpose is to
- 53:54Feed us later on, it's a vicious cycle of life as it work.
- 53:57But man, that's that's like the exact What better example could
- 54:04we possibly come up with really you know applicable sense of
- 54:08purpose and that was man makes you makes you really sit back
- 54:15and think about just the convenience is that we have you
- 54:18know I want something I can either call it in go drive and
- 54:20get it. You know become soft a bit.
- 54:26It's going to say it you know the world's become soft and lazy
- 54:32and then you know when when when the crap hits the fan and you
- 54:36know Making the, you don't get that instant fix that instant
- 54:42solution. You know, people are lost there,
- 54:44like, losing my mind, you know, what's my purpose for God?
- 54:52To go into the old ways, and there's such an appreciation for
- 55:00that hard work that farm work. Like you're talking about You
- 55:05appreciate everything more when you have to work for it.
- 55:08And I see a lot of people talk about returning to a life lived
- 55:12that way. Yeah, home setting and more
- 55:16honest, and that's great, and each their own, but a lot of
- 55:22people will make the argument that You know, we have gotten
- 55:28soft. How do our ancestors?
- 55:31Look at us, do they do, they respect us for this?
- 55:34And I would have to say, hell yeah, our ancestors that broke
- 55:39their back in 12 hours out in a field with a side, every day in
- 55:45the beaten hot sun, are going to see that we've come far enough
- 55:49in art, thinking in our Innovation and our technology,
- 55:53to better Our Lives. Do these things without kill
- 55:57ourselves at the age of 35, they're going to like, sweet
- 56:01right on. Yeah, if I had that in my day,
- 56:05right? They don't, they're not upset
- 56:08with us for taking advantage of the tools in our brain, our
- 56:13thinking, and our ability, but I think where they might be
- 56:17saddened is in losing the appreciation for the purpose.
- 56:24Why are we cutting this field? Whether it's with a side or a
- 56:28Reaper on it or a combine whatever we lost the
- 56:34appreciation for why we lost the appreciation?
- 56:38In the purpose, I don't think that the ancestors are knocking
- 56:43us or any of our modern conveniences, but maybe a little
- 56:48disappointed in What it's done. Yesterday reality in our
- 56:54appreciation of being good people.
- 56:57Yeah. Right.
- 56:58Right name because so much of the spirituality or the religion
- 57:01behind things. Now, like it was, it wasn't even
- 57:04really looked at it the same way I don't think back then like it
- 57:07was just life, you know, it was just low lifestyle, you know,
- 57:11wheat? They did what they did.
- 57:12And they honored respected venerated.
- 57:16The, the spirits or the gods as they were represented in their
- 57:18daily lives. The way they Of the way they
- 57:21function the way they provided. It was, it was the world that
- 57:25they lived in and it didn't have a special name or didn't have a
- 57:28special, you know? Label to it just was and that
- 57:35need played such a huge part just in life and there's that
- 57:42joke about paganism like the old Apple commercial.
- 57:46We have an app for that we had gone, or we have a deity for
- 57:50that, whether it be the c, or the field, or the whole restore,
- 57:56whatever, but news matter, they were important If you can't
- 58:01bring in a catch, you go hungry, your kids go hungry.
- 58:06If you can't bring the crop in, if you don't have a good
- 58:09harvest, you're not going to make it the winter.
- 58:12You're going to have to watch your children hurt from pain of
- 58:17hunger. So we prayed to frere and
- 58:23tenured and whatever we could do That's how important it was.
- 58:30That's how much they appreciated just being able to live.
- 58:36And we lost the old gods because we started taking life itself
- 58:40for granted, it became easy, we didn't need it anymore.
- 58:43We didn't need to pray for a good harvest.
- 58:45We didn't need to pray for a successful hunt.
- 58:48We didn't need to to get spirits up and get motivated to go out
- 58:54into the woods and bring home some food.
- 58:57We lost it and we lost them in the cardboard.
- 59:01Yeah, the purpose changed. So we're slowly getting them
- 59:06back because it's Our intention. But what is our purpose and
- 59:11getting them back? Reconnecting with those old gods
- 59:17perform in these old rituals and behaving in these, these ways
- 59:22and our practice. What is our purpose would be
- 59:29something fun for folks to think about for a little bit?
- 59:32Yeah, now I think the I think this is a lot of stuff.
- 59:36This is a lot of You know, things to digest mentally and
- 59:42process it. So I think that this this is a
- 59:45good spot for us to call it an episode.
- 59:47Not going to drop you get you just hang on a bit.
- 59:51But, you know, I think this is this puts us at a great stopping
- 59:55point. I so much that we've talked
- 59:56about so much that we brought up for people to consider right is
- 1:00:02Your intention to do something. But why what is the purpose?
- 1:00:05And then, and I think everything that we've talked about thus far
- 1:00:08provides a lot of examples in the practical sense and in the
- 1:00:14metaphysical sense, you know, and then in our religious
- 1:00:18approach to things, we can apply it in so many different ways.
- 1:00:23I know it's definitely going to be something that that sticks in
- 1:00:25my mind for a long time and then maybe some more topics of
- 1:00:28discussion that come up around it.
- 1:00:30Because I know this says, This is definitely struck a nerve for
- 1:00:33me son. I hope it has four for others as
- 1:00:36well. So really eye-opening to
- 1:00:40experience the change. When you start practicing with
- 1:00:44purpose, the genuine feeling that comes over between acting
- 1:00:51or practicing with intent, and then practicing the purpose.
- 1:00:58It really gets deep for you and it's it's rewarding spiritually.
- 1:01:04That's good stuff man I appreciate that.
